100 Days of Productivity [16-17/100]
12.2.23 | December is here! I've got a big group presentation this Thursday, and then another next Wednesday, so I've been picking away at those when I feel well enough. I plan to finish a large portion of this week's project today, including the 2-page paper I have to submit with it.
I started reading "Atonement of the Spine Cleaver" by F.E. Bryce, and I'm enjoying it so far.

How To Survive Nursing BLOG #7
How do we actually survive this course? Nursing school is no joke—it’s a fast-paced, intense, and emotionally demanding journey. You will be juggling lectures, clinicals, exams, and maybe even a part-time job. In Nursing, you’re not just learning facts, you’re learning to save lives, think critically, and care with compassion. Thus, expect long hours, lots of coffee, and moments where you’ll question your sanity. But, also expect to grow stronger, smarter, and more confident.
📚 Tip # 1 Be Organized— Create a planner or digital calendar to track assignments, exams, and clinical schedules.
📚 Tip # 2 Handwritten notes— Handwriting your notes enhances memory retention more effectively than typing. Write your notes to actively recall and reinforce topics.
📚 Tip # 3 Do Not Be Afraid— Facing hardships head-on prepares you for the real world of nursing, where resilience and skills go hand in hand. Do not be afraid to try.
📚 Tip # 4 Find the Right Circle— The right circle of friends will be with you through the good and the bad. Remember to always surround yourself with positivity.
📚 Tip # 5 Family Time— A strong support system reminds you why you started and, why you will keep on moving forward. Spend more time with your family.
📚 Tip # 6 Me Time— Taking rests and focusing on yourself prioritizes the mental health.
📚 Tip # 7 Eat Good— Reward yourself by eating a lot of good food after a tiring day.
📚 Tip # 8 Exercise— Make time to exercise
📚 Tip # 9 Sleep & Rest— Sleep and rest are essential in nursing school because they help improve memory, focus, making it easier to retain complex information.
📚 Tip # 10 No to Cramming— Cramming overwhelms your brain with too much information at once, making it harder to retain and recall important concept. Do it one by one.

Here are some important objective-type questions related to Anatomy and Physiology that are commonly encountered in the HESI A2 exam.
Which organ produces bile?
A. Pancreas B. Liver C. Gallbladder D. Stomach
Answer is option B.
The liver produces bile, a digestive fluid that helps break down fats in the small intestine. Bile is then stored in the gallbladder and released into the small intestine when needed.
What is the primary function of the large intestine?
A. Digestion of fats B. Absorption of nutrients C. Absorption of water D. Breakdown of proteins
Answer is option C.
The primary function of the large intestine is the absorption of water and electrolytes from indigestible food matter. This process helps form solid waste feces for elimination. The large intestine also houses beneficial gut bacteria that aid in fermentation of undigested carbohydrates.

if you are 1) currently in a university where your student healthcare covers hormone therapy, and 2) in a good financial, emotional, and social position to start hormone therapy, i would recommend pursuing it. because in my experience, it's a huge pain in the ass to get an endocrinologist once you're on your own
#unless you live near a planned parenthood or another equivalent to that#but in general you might as well take advantage of the mandatory student health insurance while you have it#it's also cheaper than you might expect. my vials cost $40 CAD for 4 months and then the injection materials are like a couple dollars each#for me i got a therapist with the university and asked them to recommend me to one of the uni's doctors#so i got to skip some of the waitlisting process yay#and then even after getting access to hormones i went to the clinic maybe 5 or 6 times because i needed a nurse to help me with injections#all of which was 'free' because it was with the university#now that i'm graduated though i need to find a new endocrinologist and it turns out the process is WAY more complicated on your own 🤡#of course your mileage may vary depending on how based your school is but it's definitely worth checking imo 🤷#beepbeep.txt#wanted to say this because i basically didn't use the uni health services until my last year and i was like 'wow#'i'm actually getting so much shit for free right now'#like i was seeing a therapist and a dietician and the endocrinologist and a nurse simultaneously at one point#and i might've missed out on all that if i didn't have someone tell me how easy it was to get help if you ask the right questions#so there's my word of wisdom for anyone who might benefit from it.......#also going to post tips about injections later because i think that would also help people out 👍

Pulmonary Edema
Tumblr media
Introduction
Pulmonary edema is a condition that results from the abnormal accumulation of fluid in the lungs, leading to impaired gas exchange and respiratory distress. This comprehensive discourse aims to provide an in-depth analysis of pulmonary edema, covering its pathophysiology, etiology, clinical manifestations, diagnostic modalities, treatment strategies, prevention strategies, and associated complications.
Pathophysiology of Pulmonary Edema
Tumblr media
Pulmonary edema develops when there is an imbalance between the hydrostatic and oncotic pressures within the pulmonary vasculature. This imbalance leads to an increase in capillary permeability and the extravasation of fluid into the interstitial space and alveoli of the lungs. Several mechanisms contribute to this process, including increased capillary hydrostatic pressure due to heart failure, increased vascular permeability due to inflammation or injury, and decreased oncotic pressure due to hypoalbuminemia or capillary leak syndrome.
Etiology of Pulmonary Edema
The etiology of pulmonary edema can be categorized into cardiogenic and noncardiogenic causes. Cardiogenic pulmonary edema occurs secondary to heart failure or other cardiac conditions that result in elevated left atrial pressure and pulmonary venous congestion. Noncardiogenic pulmonary edema, on the other hand, is caused by factors unrelated to heart dysfunction, such as acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), aspiration, sepsis, or neurogenic pulmonary edema.
Clinical Manifestations of Pulmonary Edema
Tumblr media
The clinical presentation of pulmonary edema varies depending on the underlying cause and severity of the condition. Common symptoms include dyspnea, orthopnea, paroxysmal nocturnal dyspnea, cough, frothy sputum, cyanosis, and crackles on auscultation. Severe cases may progress to respiratory failure, hypoxemia, and hemodynamic instability.
Diagnostic Modalities for Pulmonary Edema
Tumblr media
Diagnosing pulmonary edema requires a thorough clinical evaluation, including a detailed medical history, physical examination, and various diagnostic tests. Imaging studies such as chest X-ray, computed tomography (CT) scan, and lung ultrasound can provide valuable information about lung parenchymal changes and the presence of pulmonary congestion. Laboratory tests, including arterial blood gas analysis, brain natriuretic peptide levels, and electrolyte measurements, may also aid in the diagnosis and assessment of disease severity.
Treatment Strategies for Pulmonary Edema
The management of pulmonary edema involves addressing the underlying cause, relieving symptoms, and preventing complications. Initial treatment often includes supplemental oxygen therapy to improve oxygenation and reduce respiratory distress. Diuretics, such as furosemide or bumetanide, are commonly used to reduce fluid overload and alleviate pulmonary congestion. In cases of cardiogenic pulmonary edema, vasodilators, inotropes, or mechanical ventilation may be necessary to improve cardiac function and gas exchange.
Prevention Strategies for Pulmonary Edema
Preventing pulmonary edema requires a broad approach aimed at managing underlying risk factors and promoting healthy lifestyle habits. Patients with known cardiac conditions should adhere to prescribed medications, maintain a low-sodium diet, and monitor fluid intake to prevent fluid retention and exacerbation of heart failure. Individuals at risk of noncardiogenic pulmonary edema should avoid exposure to toxins, practice proper respiratory hygiene, and seek prompt medical attention for respiratory infections or injuries.
Complications of Pulmonary Edema
Tumblr media
Untreated or inadequately managed pulmonary edema can lead to several complications, including acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), cardiogenic shock, acute kidney injury, pulmonary hypertension, and death. Prompt recognition and intervention are essential to prevent progression to these life-threatening complications and improve patient outcomes.
Conclusion
Pulmonary edema is a complex and potentially life-threatening condition that requires prompt recognition, accurate diagnosis, and appropriate management. By understanding the underlying pathophysiology, etiology, clinical manifestations, diagnostic modalities, treatment strategies, prevention strategies, and associated complications of pulmonary edema, healthcare providers can optimize patient care and outcomes. Continued research efforts aimed at elucidating the mechanisms underlying pulmonary edema and identifying novel therapeutic targets are essential to further improve patient outcomes and reduce the global burden of this condition.

challenge day 13 of 70 deposits 📂
fitness: yoga pilates workout
academics: took my midterm. i had a busy day once more but i can say i did my best to work with my capacity and availability.
spiritual growth: meditated a bit on the ego 🗞️ insights below <3
it’s the ego’s nature to form identities and compartmentalized worldviews. the ego will be there for as long as our human lifetime.
in essence, we will always be pure consciousness. but we can be divine and flesh at the same time!
at the end of the day, we want to live a beautiful, happy human life, and spirituality can be harnessed for that. it’s there to guide us if and when the ego must be thinned in favor of the highest good, exactly when it’s needed.
spirituality is not just for awakening; we will always be divine and there is no changing that. spirituality can be used to facilitate earthly healing, growth, and fulfillment.
bonus deposit: i had a work meeting that went beautifully. so excited to challenge myself, learn, and play to my strengths in a way that serves my community.

100 Days of Productivity [3/100]
11.15.23 | STUDY TIP
I’ve made the goal of adopting a study technique I’ve heard called reverse-studying or pre-studying. For my more difficult classes, I review the lecture materials and read the chapters before class, and then supplement my notes with whatever the professor emphasizes during lecture. I only managed to get through 1/3 chapters for today’s lecture because my professor didn’t open up the week’s content until last night, but it still gives me a head start.

If possible get to know a few upperclassman from your major. They can tell you which professors as well as which ones actually use the textbooks listed as required. Some of them might even still have their old textbooks and let you borrow them. I bought all my textbooks freshmen and sophomore year but by junior year I only bought the ones I knew for sure I would need. Senior year my housemates and I shared all our textbooks so I think we both ended up buying only like 1 each for all the classes we were taking.
Electives should be fun and interesting! That’s why they’re electives. I took jazz dance, acting (got my worse grade for my entire college career lol), alternative therapies (I was a nursing major), and 18th century British literature because I’m a nerd. As well as others that I’m forgetting. And also keep in mind how difficult your total amount of classes will be. Intersperse easy classes with hard classes each semester. You don’t want to take 5 hard classes one semester and 5 easy classes the next.
Communicate with your professors! And do it in the way they prefer. I was an adjunct instructor for years and I always told my students I would accept reasonably late assignments if they had a good reason and communicated it with me. I also told them if they needed a response within 24hrs they had to text me because I had a full time job outside of teaching and was not checking my email every day. I had a student email instead of texting me asking for an extension because she had a migraine and couldn’t stop vomiting. Well guess what I didn’t see the email until after the due date (she submitted in time) and I would have 100% given her that extension if she had just texted me! Not every professor wants to be texted though so pay attention.
And yes read the syllabus! The amount of times I was asked questions that were clearly written in my syllabus was so annoying. I even bolded the most important parts because I got so annoyed by it. And people still didn’t read even the bolded parts! And yes I remembered and judged the ones who asked me questions that were clearly written out.
Actual good first-time college student advice:
Wear jeans/pants that “breathe” and bring a sweater, even if it’s scorching hot out, until you know which building blasts the AC to 60 degrees F and which feels like a sauna
Backpacks with thick straps are your friend!  Messenger bags are cool and all but if you’re commuting with a lot of stuff, symmetrically styled backpacks are better for your back
You are your own person and you can walk out whenever you need to or want to, so long as you’re not disrupting the class.  Meaning you can go to the bathroom without permission, take a breather if you’re anxious, answer an important phone call, etc.
If you don’t like the class on the first day, if you can- DROP THAT CLASS AND TAKE ANOTHER ONE!  It’ll only get worse from there!
If you can, take a class outside your major; it’s a good break from your expected studies.
You are in charge of your schedule.  Your adviser and guidance counselor is there to ‘advise and guide’ but if you don’t like certain classes and you can substitute for others, that’s your choice.
Consequently, if you are changing anything drastic in your plan, talk with your adviser and instructors.
Pay attention to your credit hours and grades.  Never leave this to the last week of school, you will be sorry and stressed beyond belief!
Unless it’s a lab book or otherwise specified, go to the class for a week or so before buying an expensive textbook.  Some classes, while having it on their required list, do not actually use the textbook a whole lot and you might find some of it scanned online.  Rent if you can or buy used online (schools actually don’t give discounts).  Use your best judgement on what you think you need.
Tell the people who go up to you selling or advertising things you are not interested in that you are in a rush to class and don’t have time to listen to them.  It’s less rude and they’ll leave you alone.
The smaller the class, the better it is to have some sort of acquaintanceship with a couple classmates.  They might save your ass if you are absent one day or need to study.  And talking with them makes the time go by faster without it being so insufferable.
You don’t need to join a club or sport, but internships are cool and useful!
If you can afford it, take a day off once or twice each semester if you’re too exhausted.  Just be aware of what you missed and if it was worth missing!
Your health is the most important, this goes for mental health too!!  Note: College-age/upper teens is when mental disorders like depression and anxiety are most commonly diagnosed.  Most schools have therapy services, especially during exam time.  Look into it if you need to!
Communicate with your professor if you are having trouble with something.  Anything.
Eat and stay hydrated.  Bring a water bottle and snack to class.
All-nighters will happen but never go over 36 hours without sleep.
It’s going to be hard and there will be times you might think about giving up.  This WILL happen.  You just have to make sure what you’re doing isn’t making you absolutely miserable and/or there is something rewarding and positive to look forward to at the end!

Here are some important objective-type questions about Anatomy & Physiology that has been encountered on the HESI test, which is often used for nursing school admissions or assessments.
Today we will discuss about Digestive System:
Which part of the digestive system is responsible for water absorption?
a) Stomach b) Large intestine c) Small intestine d) Mouth
The correct answer is: b) Large intestine
Explanation: The large intestine is primarily responsible for absorbing water and electrolytes from digested food, forming solid waste (feces) before excretion.
What type of digestion occurs in the stomach?
a) Chemical digestion of fats b) Physical digestion of carbohydrates c) Chemical digestion of proteins d) Absorption of vitamins
The correct answer is: c) Chemical digestion of proteins
Explanation: In the stomach, chemical digestion of proteins occurs through the action of pepsin, an enzyme that breaks down proteins into smaller peptides. The acidic environment helps activate pepsin and aids in protein digestion.

Why aren't we talking about the real reason male college enrollment is dropping? (Celeste Davis, Oct 6 2024)
"White flight is a term that describes how white people move out of neighborhoods when more people of color move in.
White flight is especially common when minority populations become the majority. That neighborhood then declines in value.
Male flight describes a similar phenomenon when large numbers of females enter a profession, group, hobby or industry—the men leave. That industry is then devalued.
Take veterinary school for example:
In 1969 almost all veterinary students were male at 89%.
By 1987, male enrollment was equal to female at 50%.
By 2009, male enrollment in veterinary schools had plummeted to 22.4%
A sociologist studying gender in veterinary schools, Dr. Anne Lincoln says that in an attempt to describe this drastic drop in male enrollment, many keep pointing to financial reasons like the debt-to-income ratio or the high cost of schooling.
But Lincoln’s research found that “men and women are equally affected by tuition and salaries.”
Her research shows that the reason fewer men are enrolling in veterinary school boils down to one factor: the number of women in the classroom.
For every 1% increase in the proportion of women in the student body, 1.7 fewer men applied.
One more woman applying was a greater deterrent than $1000 in extra tuition! (…)
Since males had dominated these professions for centuries, you would think they would leave slowly, hesitantly or maybe linger at 40%, 35%, 30%, but that’s not what happens.
Once the tipping point reaches majority female- the men flee. And boy do they flee!
It’s a slippery slope. When the number of women hits 60% the men who are there make a swift exit and other men stop joining.
Morty Schapiro, economist and former president of Northwestern University has noticed this trend when studying college enrollment numbers across universities:
“There’s a cliff you fall off once you become 60/40 female/male. It then becomes exponentially more difficult to recruit men.”
Now we’ve reached that 60% point of no return for colleges.
As we’ve seen with teachers, nurses and interior design, once an institution is majority female, the public perception of its value plummets.
Scanning through Reddit and Quora threads, many men seem to be in agreement - college is stupid and unnecessary.
A waste of time and money. You’re much better off going into the trades, a tech boot camp or becoming an entrepreneur. No need for college. (…)
When mostly men went to college? Prestigious. Aspirational. Important.
Now that mostly women go to college? Unnecessary. De-valued. A bad choice. (…)
School is now feminine. College is feminine. And rule #1 if you want to safely navigate this world as a man? Avoid the feminine.
But we don’t seem to want to talk about that."
