I was about to DM you but then I saw that anon and THOUGHT fuck them. I HOPE they see this and eat shit. I want to say this because I want to get it off my chest. As someone who has been in non poc and non-black spaces before. I can say that your blog is one of my safe spaces for me. It's so refreshing to be in a space that isn't dominated by white people.

I used to read a LOT of Fall Put Boy fanfics when I was in middle school and felt sad when I would see what the MC looked like. Because she was either a blonde, brunette, or a red head that had pale skin and blue eyes. Then it got to a point where it was everything that I read, so I just "ignored" it or would pretend that this was me, and honestly looking back on it, I'm ashamed of it. Especially as a writer myself. It is SAD that I had to pretend as a BLACK WOMAN that I was this white girl who was named Riley or Clare to fantasize about a biracial white passing man.

Then, when I got into KPOP, I found AMBW fanfics, and it was nice, but I felt weird about reading it because it wasn't seen as the normal fanfics I was consuming for the past 3 years. Then I realized that I have black OCs from childhood, and I've imagined myself in stories before. Why am I uncomfortable now? Do I not love being black? I went down a whole spiral and was like well why don't I not describe race in my writing? It'll be easier for me and other readers. That way, it can be for everyone. After I found this on book that I LOVED on wattpad, I realized that I wanted to write this too. I want to write about being a black woman falling in love with an idol and them loving me back.

It wasn't until I was 18 and joined into an all white space that I realized I would and could never belong. No matter what, Fandom, no matter what I wrote or who I wrote for, I wouldn't have anything in common with them. Even when I showed them my AMBW fanfics, they felt like it was a good idea, but they felt uncomfortable because they couldn't center themselves in it.

The moral of the story is that it is HARD for black people and other poc to center themselves in stories that are not for them. The world makes it hard for them to. I want to write more fanfics about kpop idols falling in love with black woman. Or just living life and falling in love. I want to write anime fanfics with a black OC getting into MESS. Every time I get on this app and I see (idol) x blk reader (mostly Johnny) I get so happy or when I I see head canons of (kpop group) washing their black s/o hair it make me happy. It inspires me as a writer.

I’m happy that my fics and works provide people with comfort and happiness because that is exactly what I made them for.

I grew up on wattpad. Reading a lot of 1D and 5SOS fan fictions with white FMC all the time.

Every time they mentioned her long straight hair I always said that she was just wearing a 360 lace buss down😂

I didn’t realize until years after how fuxked up it was for me to only have access to books with little to representation of poc especially black women.

The romances that had black women were always rooted in trauma.

No soft loving

No calmness.

just pure chaos

And it made me realize that a lot of people think that black women cannot have love fictionally or realistically w/o it being toxic and chaotic.

I also realized how a lot of people and myself (unfortunately) thought that darker skinned, fat/chubby black women and other poc would always be the last choice for love or as a romantic interest.

I’m glad I grew up and understood that I was beautiful and fucking amazing but with that also came the reality that not everyone felt that way.

Unfortunately there were women out there who hated their body, skin, personality etc. Everything that made them unique.

And so I decided that no matter where I existed I would always make sure to highlight and uplift all my pretty bitches😂🫶🏿

Especially when they think they aren’t.

okay, this is really hard to explain itd be easier to show but I have ZERO (0) pages done so ur gonna have to stick with me okay pleas and thank u.

Hicktown takes place in a small town in the 80s and focuses (I'm gonna switch POVs a couple thousand times so sorry in advance) on Jacob, who has just moved into said small town to live with his stepbrother Joe and him being the amazing family man he continues his fathers legacy by leaving a child by their lonesome to go party with his friends and now Jacob's on his own so he just explores this big ass house, did I mention Joe's family is rich? Remember that.

Switch POVs we're with Joe at this random party hanging out with his girlfriend (Angie) and his BFF (Eddie) on a patio (very important detail/s). Angie fucks off to who knows where and so The Boys are alone and Eddie breaks the silence with:

"Hey, I love you man but your girlfriend is kind of a freak."

Very tactful but not tactful enough so Joe displaying a very Rare W is like "Hey man that's totally not cool what you said about someone I really care about please take that back and apologise to Angie or we won't be friends anymore." (HE DOESN'T ACTUALLY SAY THIS IT INVOLVES A LOT LESS CRITICAL THINKING) so they have a big fight Joe probably calls Eddie faggot (did I mention that Eddie's gay and has internalised homophobia running through his veins and Joe knows this and also uses this against him. Wow [I PROMISE IT GETS BETTER]) so Eddie leaves and Angie comes back.

Angie can see that he's upset so she Invites Joe to go out into the woods with her to take a breather and he Accepts.

So they go out into the woods together and they talk about anything that they can think of until Angie stops Joe. They're deep into the woods now and the only thing allowing them to see is the moonlight. It's a quiet night sans the music but even then it's been drowned out from the distance. Even the quiet chittering of wildlife is gone.

A twig snapping is what breaks Joe out of his trance.

It all happens so quickly. There's a bat cracking his skull open and white hot pain is eating him alive.

Okay, I'm gonna stop here or I'm gonna spill the entire story LOL. Sorry abt how messy and jumbled this is I'm sillay. but I gotta explain their character archetypes bc it's very important!!!

Joe's character is a spin-off of the pretty boy character he's that but awful. He's built off of being pretty, rich, privileged and WHITE (sounds silly but it fr adds to his character + I get to laugh at him)

(spoilers, obviously)

- opened with Klaus and Ben, my kings. Klaus’s hair looks so weird straightened while short 

- AWESOME opening soundtrack 

- seeing all their powers so controlled makes me wonder how they leveled up to that skill in the alternate timeline. like the only time we saw Klaus use the powers of other ghosts in the correct timeline was when two of them caught him falling out of the sky. however Diego did end up controlling bullets and Allison used her voice to technically kill one of the Swedes

- the homeless man screaming Allison’s name alongside Luther... funny shit

- big teddy bear Hazel

- Elliot was fucking awesome i think he was a great addition as a side character. rip tho :(

- honestly i don’t understand why Diego would WANT to save JFK. like it’s not that big of a deal. does he not understand what messing with the timeline can do??

- honestly i was scared that Klaus was gonna be overly attracted to him or whatever, which would be weird cause he’s years younger than Klaus, but honestly, at the core he just wanted to save Dave’s life. even if it means never meeting him in a different timeline. he truly loved Dave. and that ptsd flashback was done so well

- i knew Lila wasn’t trustworthy but i didn’t REALLY expect that! 

- Vanya and Luther talking with each other, Luther admitting the apocalypse wasn’t all her fault. beautiful

- the Majestic 12 reminds me of the conspiracy theory that only a few families control basically everything in the world. the Majestic 12 may be based off of that, idk

- idk about everyone else but Klaus’s scorpion and the frog story made total sense to me! frogs ARE bitches

- the diner scene.... ugh. it really shows that the two of them did fall in love and they did stupid in love things, like talking about their family, about why Dave wanted to join, favorite colors, favorite foods, etc. however that’s seen later on when Dave visits the compound

- yes it’s very disheartening when Klaus is attacked, but honestly i think it had to happen, just like the riot had to happen. the 60s weren’t a fun time for lgbt people and poc. it was only going to be a matter of time before the show HAD to acknowledge the consequences of Klaus’s ‘flamboyancy’ in 1963 Texas. it doesn’t make it right or easy to see, but it’s realistic. 

- it also makes sense that Klaus fell off the wagon after experiencing something like that. yes we all would’ve liked him to stay sober, but sobriety and recovery aren’t linear. 

- Allison is so happy with Ray can we please drop this pseudo-incest plotline let’s MOVE ON 

- Texas Grace ! who is not actually Grace rip (i think? i was a bit confused lol)

- the scene with Harlan running off was really upsetting but we got to see those weird light particles that we saw in the first season

- Pogo Pogo Pogo Pogo

- Klaus being a dick to Ben again, as brothers do. i do feel bad for Ben though it must be sooo frustrating. that scene with him and Allison was really sweet and funny tho

- i just have to say that Luther and Diego are so fucking funny this season it’s awesome. like there are a LOT of good lines overall by everyone but they’re hilarious. “At least he didn’t shank my ass” “no bro, he shanked your heart”“Dads part of a sinister CABAL that’s plotting on killing the president.” “a caBAL?”“You two still a thing? *leans in* do we need to talk?” “No, she’s married.” “Woah dude... that’s rough.” and countless others

- the sibling reunion!!

- sisters and Klaus!! that was so awesome to see. and Klaus’s hairpins, Vanya saying she’s gonna tell Sissy she loves her, their dance sequence, Klaus calling Allison out on that incest. beautiful

- the fucking Swedish cover of Hello was PERFECT i mean i was sad for the Swedes but it was hilarious. there were a couple beautiful shots of the boat on fire though

- god it must’ve been so traumatizing for Allison to be thrust into such a hostile place with no voice and no way to contact her family

-  idk about you guys but long live Team Zero

- calling Ben that he was becoming their father was a bit uncalled for 

- the fact that Klaus didn’t help Dave’s chances, and in fact escalated Dave’s own timeline.. his trembling hands... robert sheehan is an amazing actor

- the Black president bit lmaoo loved it

- the way Reginald spoke to Diego.. i’m gonna throw hands with an old man

- Klaus LITERALLY looked like he was having a seizure and they all just... played it off?? 

- poor, poor Carl. nah fuck him lol

- that bloody opening scene was awesome! and thank god Five got to say fuck. the fact that it was about a candy bar makes too much sense

- Robert Sheehan acting as Ben: amazing showstopping spectacular he’s so talented

- the whole multiple Fives and Luther bit was honestly really funny, and i immensely respect smaller Five over bigger Five. 

- yes Klaus, you survived a family of seven. you got this

- not sad about Carl dying one bit!

- Ben... that was such a beautiful scene. not just the content of the scene, but the cinematography. Ben fading away... Vanya hugging him... ugh. the main takeaway i had from that scene is that at the core of it all, Ben and Klaus love each other immensely. they have a weird, dysfunctional, fucked up relationship, where Klaus is an asshole and Ben definitely shouldn’t of possessed him without his consent, but they’re still brothers, and Ben forgives him. 

- oof Ben’s funeral was hard. also was it just me or did Klaus’s kid actor sound weird? like it sounded like Robert was dubbing his lines 

- all the siblings back together again!!!! Klaus going with Vanya to save Harlan!! Vanya telling him Ben forgives him and that it wasn’t Klaus’s fault Ben got stuck with him!! everyone in the car!!! be still my beating heart

- yeah didn’t see Lila having powers coming tbh. i really feel bad for her she’s had such a rough and traumatic life, especially with the Handler as her only parental figure

- the Swede brother and Five putting down their weapons: “enough.” the Swede wanted revenge for his brothers - an eye for an eye, but there was a mutual understanding between the two of them: they would do anything for their family. if the Swede hurts one of the Hargreeves, Five would never stop coming after him. i thought it was very beautiful 

- mmm Reggie’s foreshadowing coming into play. proud of u Five

- the ending was so beautiful. everyone got closure in some type of way. except now Klaus is alone with nothing but his dog tags :(

- EMO BEN HAHAHA WTFFF?? is Lila in the sparrow academy? why was Ben’s portrait over the mantle piece? did Five disappear?? is the sparrow academy just older versions of the siblings who stuck around?? so many questions

FINAL THOUGHTS

- Ellen Page’s acting consistently blows me away. she is amazing 

- beautiful cinematography, funny writing, pretty good acting. i didn’t like the soundtrack as much as i did the first season’s, but some of it wasn’t bad.

- i’m glad ben got peace, but i’m also glad justin min isn’t gone for good. his social media presence is too vital for us

- i swear to god if they keep treating klaus as a joke and don’t let him get any actual development like everyone else had (he barely got closure with Dave, he reconciled with Ben through a second party) next season, i’m gonna riot. PLEASE i want to learn more about his powers now that Ben is gone. what happened to seeing tons of ghosts when he’s sober??

- Luther and Diego were probably my favorite duo of the season, I’m so happy that they’ve reconciled and are bonding more. 

- just seeing Vanya grow and be happy was amazing 

all in all, really wonderful season. i probably liked it better than the first one. now it’s time to consume fanfiction and maybe finish my own (check out “god doesn’t want him and neither does the devil” on ao3!)

why did no one ever tell me about Into The Badlands???? ITS SO SO GOOD

ya'll this show has EVERYTHING (im only halfway through season 2) but here's the basics:

1. COSTUMES-seriously the costuming is amazing and im obsessed, every scene i have to stop for a second to take in the beautiful costumes and thats why its first bc holy shit they're amazing

2. the WORLDBUILDING-its post apocalyptic and the Badlands is ruled by different 'Barons' who have to FIGHT to be on top. Its none of this royal family nonsense where the kids automatically become the next baron bc 'the gods command it' NOPE if you want to be a Baron you have to be one Badass motherfucker and the PLOT IS INTRIGUING-its multiple storylines with all the characters intersecting and some plots are a bit boring (im looking at you MK and whatever the fuck Veil is doing in s2) but overall its compelling and i always want to know whats gonna happen next

(i only sat down to watch one episode bc my brother forced me too after thanksgiving dinner, next thing i know it was 1am and we were on season 2)

3. CASUAL DIVERSITY- the main character Sunny is a Chinese American man who's in love with a Black woman!!! POC characters are not just throwaway background characters , they are LEADERS!! THE WOMEN ARE BADASS MOTHERFUCKERS!!!! season 2 has started to introduce queer characters (one of the main ladies no less)!!!! the diversity isn't treated as special or as pandering its just who they Are

4. THE FIGHT SCENES-holy shit the fight scenes are impeccable!!! if gratuitous violence is your thing this is the show for you!!!!!! people die very graphically pretty much multiple times every episode so if graphic violence and seeing bones pop out and break grosses you out...yea dont watch this show theres zero ways to avoid seeing it

5. rapists and pedophiles are NOT sympathetic characters and more often than not are very brutally killed which i am a massive fan of ngl

6. also in s2 nick frost appears and, while he is very much comic relief (its nick frost) he's also one badass motherfucker???? like I genuinely wasnt expecting the fat character to be both funny and badass but HERE WE ARE AND I AM P U M P E D

7. Everything about The Widow. i adore her.

8. the ONLY con i have so far is that i dont care for the ladies fighting like this in heels, i always feel bad for the actresses bc as someone who grew up in martial arts i have TRIED to fight in heels, and it's possible but it fucking sucks and its so easy to snap your ankle

i don’t think they’re harmful for everyone, but they can be if you try to force yourself into them. i identified as butch for a while, but i found it didn’t really fit me after a while. and that’s okay ! i’m personally not comfortable with either label being applied to me, but i know some people find a lot of comfort in them. one of my best friend identifies as butch and i know she really loves the label. and that’s also okay !

autoboyagraphy by christina lauren: so this was the first book i read in quarantine and oh my GOD was it beautiful. i already wanna read it again tbh. it deals with internalized and some externalized homophobia in such a real way and man, i just wanna hug these two guys :((( and also scream at them a little because i just wish they could get out of their own heads for a second but also i totally understand why they did the things they did too

radio silence by alice oseman: i’m pretty sure i’ve talked about this book here before but omg if you haven’t read it what are you doing with your life?? alice is one of my favorite authors now and the way she writes about that feeling of finishing school and not knowing what to do with your life is so so real and tbh, really helped me feel better after i dropped out of my old college. also like every major character is queer which is such a lovely bonus 💕💕 (and you may recognize a certain someone who makes a cameo about halfway through!)

yes no maybe so by becky albertalli and aisha saeed: this is by far the most IMPORTANT book i’ve read in quarantine. it deals with elections and campaigning and racism sooooo well and the romance is freaking adorable. it also shows you just how important local elections can be which is AMAZING and literally perfect for this year. i feel like it should be required reading for any young person voting this year tbh

tell me again how a crush should feel by sara farizan: omg so the narrator of this book? is the actual BEST like her voice actually had me dying at points. also it’s a lesbian POC romance which!!! you literally NEVER see and it makes my representation loving heart so happy 💓💓💓 (there is some emotional manipulation done by one of the characters tho so just a tiny warning there!)

moving on to stuff i read a couple years ago, i highly recommend the hate u give by angie thomas, we are okay by nina lacour, and i’ll give you the sun by jandy nelson, which are all soooo well written and deal with some really great issues. the hate u give is literally perfect for right now and sooooo so powerful and makes you think a lot about how fucked up the world is. we are okay and i’ll give you the sun are both soooo beautifully written too and helped me a lot when i was so depressed in 2018/2019. all three of these are books i really really wanna read again now actually but i should probably try to finish the 6 ebooks i’ve borrowed from my library first sjskjdkdnd

oh yeah, if i haven’t mentioned already, most of these are queer romances (which is my preference now in YA since i find straight romances boring unless the characters are dealing with something really important shksnsks) or have queer characters although if you like straight romances, sarah dessen is the absolute QUEEN! i read almost all her books when i was in high school and i’m now catching up on her more recent ones and shit, they’re all sooooo good and deal with some huge issues too! i just finished once and for all and i’m almost done with the rest of the story and fell in love with all the characters and the setting and everything really.... they’re both just so GOOD!!!

finally, a couple random finds that i ended up really loving last year are the fragile ordinary by samantha young and amelia westlake was never here (which is the american title, everywhere else it’s just amelia westlake) by erin gough. they both deal with some really important topics (hmmm i’m sensing a pattern here lmao) and the latter is a wlw romance which is really just the cherry on top!

The duo loved their father, that was undeniable, but they both hated how he ruled. They knew something had to be done about it. Ansel and Arabella started harbouring 'Undesireables' on their private island of Theo first and soon after began helping them out by finding jobs and homes for them on the mainland. The young royals have continued to help the 'Undesireables' in their land and now Tearmunn is even more rich than it was before, although the king still wants them gone. Lately, more and more 'Undesireables' have been coming up dead or missing. The very beings Ansel and Arabella invited, promising safety, were now dying off. What are they to do? To me, what really pisses me off is how Shamier was treated this season. Like you said he may have had other projects but you can work around it and not just have him appearing just to be in episodes but you can actually give him a storyline. And the thing is, they need him so fucking much, he saves the day almost every single time. Then he just disappears because he doesn't get any recognition for all that he does for everyone. What I really hate about this whole situation is how hardly anyone is calling them out on their shit. Like shit how do people expect us to feel watching this show as POC's when the POC's on this show are treated like shit. Idc if they add another cast member and they're POC, it won't take away from the fact that one of them is a lead and constantly sidelined, one is now a villain and was treated like shit and one is only there for comedic timing and to give googley eyes at doc.

What hurts even more is how all three POC characters have been used to prop up the white male character. Dolls has just been sidelined the whole season and am I supposed to believe that wynonna didn't give two shits about him in the finale when this is the same woman who fought so hard to save him in 2x01. Rosita was treated like shit from doc. And then Jeremy treats him like he can fucking walk on water. I didn't mind him but this and his fans have made me hate doc with a passion now.

I know you don't hate doc but what makes me even more mad about him, is that he constantly makes mistakes and treated people like shit. Like how tf does he get away with this constantly??? i think doc has truly grown from who he was back before the well happened, but he still is an asshole and can be a shitty person (esp re: rosita lmao). i think he’s a flawed man and that’s... acceptable, but what i don’t find acceptable is that, like u said, he’s never called out on it. in order to deserve all the praise he got from every character this season, he really should have apologized to ppl abt things he’s said and done.

I just wanna say thanks, it feels good to be able to rant like this, so many people treat this show likes it's perfect when it's extremely problematic at times. Coming from a hardcore wyndolls shipper this shit has really hit me hard. Trust me I know they're a fictional character and it's just a show but I've been through so many times of my fav characters (who happen to be POC) either getting sidelined or killed off and I'm not sure if I can deal with it anymore. And the person who I'm really upset for is shamier. Because shit man he deserves so much better. This has actually made me lose so much trust in the writers and I have no hope left for S3.

I was just reading all your asks on the finale and I remembered wynonna telling doc that she never would've kissed dolls if she knew doc was back and I'm just like... what! That whole sentence just contradicts one of the main themes and relationships of S1. Listen I loved the moments that we got of wyndolls in S2 but this forced wynd*c relationship has me feeling so disappointed in the show. when S3 is back on I'm just gonna wait to see how dolls/wyndolls is treated before watching. no really that so came out of left field bc like???? wynonna + dolls were being built up the entire first season, it was all leading to dolls admitting his feelings and them kissing. (remember when wyn dared dolls to admit that he cares for her?? and he couldn’t? so she called him a pussy and walked away???? then he finally did admit that he needs her in the finale? im crying) wynonna + doc was just them learning to trust each other and fucking in the forest that one time, there was nothing OVERTLY romantic abt their relationship compared to wyndolls. 

I just don't get how they expect me to believe that forced ass relationship. She literally looks at dolls like he's her whole world, and when he came back she looked so relieved and happy again. I hate love triangles in shows and this season especially has made me intensely dislike doc, especially after 2x03 with that whole "I ain't doing it for him" comment. And his treatment of Rosita and his actions during 2x06. I cannot deal with this shit and I really don't trust them anymore, not at all

CLEXACON 2k17

As many of you know I was lucky enough to attend the first ever ClexaCon in Las Vegas this weekend and I just want to take a moment to reflect on the truly incredible time I had and the importance of representation in the media.

ClexaCon has really accentuated the power writers and content creators hold and the disappointment audiences feel when that power is abused. Writers have a responsibility to reflect the society that we live in and yet diverse content is still so scarce. Look to the shows you're watching, are they diverse? If not, why? Can anything be done about it? These kinds of conversations need to start happening if anything is going to change. It's not good enough anymore to simply cast one token diverse character per network TV show if the representation isn't good. It's 2017; the fight for *good* representation can begin. It's time that POC/LGBT+/female characters stop being used to further the storyline of the straight white male lead. If you're reading this and you're a content creator or dream of being one, start rethinking your representation. Stop thinking that putting in an asian character as the sidekick or having a character experiment with their sexuality for a 3 episode arc is good enough and you're free from having to write any further diverse stories.

It's been an entire year but I still remember (and I'm sure my friends remember too) the feeling and heartbreak I felt after my favourite character died on my favourite show. I was never really a TV nerd and before this I never really cared when characters died because shows should always evolve and change. If they don't grow, they stop being interesting.

However, the 100 was different. Jason Rothenberg seemed to tick every box when it came to diverse storytelling and writing. He had young female leaders that were leaders in their own right and no one challenged their ability to lead based off their identities. He had POC in a variety of different roles: leaders, followers, friends, enemies. And he created a world where labels didn't exist and people weren't defined by their sexuality. He created a beautiful love story between 2 beautifully flawed female characters and used this aspect of the show to interact with fans in quite a cruel way. LGBT audiences had become familiar with the bury your gays (BYG) trope by now (Buffy, The OC, Skins, etc) and so naturally there was a hesitance to give full trust into this show due to heartbreak felt in the past. Jason reached out to fans on twitter, heard stories from fans and seemed to have an understanding of his audience like no showrunner had before. Other writers on the show even went as far as to assure fans that the character of Lexa was not going to die and Jason himself invited fans onto the set of the show and encouraged them to take pictures as the finale was being shot. We had hope that the storyline of Lexa would not follow a tired trope.

This was quickly taken away as he tweeted 'if u can only watch 1 episode live this season, this is it' and 'please don't spoil the ending. This one needs to be watched LIVE.' Spoiler: Lexa dies. He engaged his vulnerable audience and got us excited about an episode that he knew would devastate the community. Lexa dies from a bullet not meant for her, after experiencing one true moment of joy (and if you know her character that does not happen often) and after finally realising that 'life is about more than just surviving.' She realised that on her death bed so yea, it was all quite cruel really. 2 episodes later they killed beloved character Lincoln, a kind and compassionate black man who was in love with a girl in an opposing clan. They had him chained, with his hands behind his back, on his knees and shot in the head. No points for the 100 there. I honestly have no idea how they didn't see this as problematic. They stripped him of all of his power whilst the people he loved were forced to watch. Again, very very cruel.

The week after Lexa died the BYG trope started to become more and more noticeable. In one week we lost characters from the Vampire Diaries, The Walking Dead and Empire. An extensive list can be seen here https://www.autostraddle.com/all-65-dead-lesbian-and-bisex…/

Anyway! You guys knew all of that so back to ClexaCon, the positive part of this post. I was very fortunate to be able to attend the con with a bunch of amazing people, Liv (mom number one), Rin (Australian mom number 2), Elke (The Netherlands) and Sofia (Canada). The last 3 all make Youtube vides and spoke on a few panels - 'How To Use Youtube as a Platform', 'Lexa's Legacy'. Being given the opportunity to see the people I care about get the appreciation they deserve and so much praise and love was an experience that I can't even put into words. As Sofia said in her own post: 'the people I met this weekend reflected what the Clexa fandom is all about. Full of love, understanding, acceptance, and importance' and I whole heartedly agree.

ClexaCon gave me hope and a sense of purpose that I've been missing for quite some time. And I am so lucky that I did not have one negative experience whilst there. The guests were amazing, the fans were amazing and the volunteers worked so hard to make everything flow effortlessly. They can never get enough thanks from me for doing that (especially the one volunteer who let me meet some of the guests for free, that was great!).

Travelling to Vegas alone was inherently terrifying to me and rooming with people that I had formed a connection with online but had never met in real life was even more terrifying. But it was the kind of fear where once you feel it, you know you're moving in the right direction. That kind of excitement is what should push you through life and is what forces you to grow. If I had let fear take over I never would have met Sarah Shahi in the loo so, follow your fear friends.

so I saw Frozen 2 for the fourth time

i have so many questions.

there’s a relatively negative (and very long) review beneath the cut so pls read at your own risk. and, of course, spoilers.

I’ve seen Frozen 2 four times now and yikes. I’d kinda hoped it would get better with each viewing, but it’s somehow worse??? I really loved the first movie; it literally changed my life in an incredibly drastic way (don’t ask) but it had been very important to me over the past six years, and...I’m so disappointed.

My initial reaction was disappointment, and I should’ve stuck with it. Like, wtf was that? But some parts were also really well done? It left me so conflicted lol

PROS

Vuelie was a good way to open the film; I quite liked the nostalgia :’)

The intro scene in general was good; I liked seeing more of their parents, although idk what their father was thinking telling them such a tale before bed lmao seems like some shit my mother would do

All is Found is my favourite non-depressing song in the movie, and it opens it beautifully. ERW has a wonderful voice.

The animation really is beautiful; it looks so realistic. Specifically the clouds and the one scene of the waves crashing over the pine trees. It looked amazing!

The music is good but not great. FTFTIF is my favourite; it’s so catchy and cheery. I really liked TNRT, and SY is perfect, but these songs just weren’t as catchy as the ones in Frozen?? I’m thankful for AURORA tho, that was a lovely gift.

Bruni was absolutely adorable (even tho he was an obvious cash-grab for merch lol), 10/10 love Bruni. Bruni + Elsa = even better.

Anna looked absolutely breathtaking throughout the entire movie; the redesign they did animation-wise really works in her favour, and now she’s rocking those Emilia Clarke eyebrows which is a hell yes from me. Her final look gave me all the feels; I can’t say I’m a huge fan of the dress and hairstyle?? it seemed a bit too not Anna, but at the same time, it showed her growth and maturity and I’m very happy with that.

As dark as it was, the shipwreck scene was beautiful. It was handled beautifully; their reactions were devastating. There is a huge con here, but I’ll save that for later.

The ocean battle was really neat. The water looked so good, and Elsa looks good wet???

The whole scene in Ahtohallan was well done; I liked the memories. I wish Anna had been there; she deserved to see her history, too, and it wasn’t fair that Elsa got that spotlight once again.

Everything after Elsa freezing was absolutely breathtaking as well. Anna’s reactions, the song, the scenery-- it was tragically beautiful.

Kristoff had the two best lines in the ENTIRE movie: “I’m here. What do you need?” and “It’s okay. My love is not fragile.” It’s so rare to see a good, supportive relationship in tv/movies, be it heterosexual or homosexual, it doesn’t happen. It’s so rare. So this was a beautiful break from that; the faith he had in her was amazing. Thank u. the real mvp.

The scene with Anna as she accepts the fate of her future; as she takes in a breath and realises/accepts that her home is gone, and her blood family is gone. Everything about it was perfect. You could feel her emptiness. Poor baby needed a hug :(

I liked that Kristoff also hugged Elsa when she returned; it showed that they were friends, which is really important for Anna tbh

I think that’s it for pros??? Now for the cons.

CONS:

Gonna start this off simple: the plot was weak. This is unfortunately not an unpopular opinion; it made no sense. It was too convoluted to the point where nothing was explained.

The pacing was off, and it was ridiculously anti-climactic. The layout in general seemed a bit weird tbh I could definitely sit here and justify all of it, but I shouldn’t have to.

They gave us no reason to gaf about this voice that Elsa was hearing. How long had she been hearing it for? Why was she so drawn to it? Why didn’t she think she was just hearing things? Or maybe she did at one point and then realised she wasn’t crazy? 

There was almost no character development. Elsa was the same as she was in Frozen, but this time, it was just annoying. She never learned or grew. Anna was demoted to a clingy side-character even though she’s the protagonist; I have no words for how frustrating this was to watch. I miss the Kristanna bickering. I liked their dynamic overall; I understand their insecurities and lack of ability to communicate because of it, and I liked how non-toxic they were. Overall, they did love and trust each other; they believed in and supported each other, even though they had a falling out (again and again) and were separated for most of the film (again, wtf?) EA had no development together, and honestly, they were annoying asf as a duo. There was no communication and no understanding. I will say that Anna’s fear and frustration throughout the entire movie was absolutely 100% understandable and sensible; she’d already lost too much before, and wasn’t prepared to lose anything else. I just wish she’d been portrayed a bit differently??? And it would’ve been nice if Elsa had stopped for, like, two minutes to be like, “hey, are you okay, you seem clingy and worried” but instead she just kept running and didn’t gaf.

It was over dramatic for the sake of plot, when it didn’t have to be. Elsa didn’t have to continuously try and push Anna away “for her protection.” They absolutely could’ve done the vast majority of things together. Fuck, they could’ve gone to the dark sea together. Anna could’ve stayed on the beach while Elsa tackled the Nokk. Then when Anna saw that Elsa was perfectly capable of protecting herself, they could’ve parted ways then and done whatever it was they needed to do. Or, Elsa could’ve taken Anna to Ahtohallan?? They may have discovered there that Anna couldn’t enter, but then they’d be given the opportunity to communicate, and Anna would’ve at least been included, since this was her history, too.

If this is a movie about two sisters, why the ever loving fuck is it all about Elsa and her origins? What about Anna’s origins? They were her parents, too. Sure, we ask “why does Elsa have magic,” but why doesn’t Anna have magic? Why was Elsa the “gift”? Why is Anna’s superpower “love”?? And why is that “superpower” only valid when it’s in regards to Elsa? Why is Anna so strong, physically? Emotionally? Personally? Is it just her? Why isn’t she an element, too? What’s with this bridge bullshit? Why the fuckkkk is Elsa the “fifth spirit” when she’s ice and ice is literally just water? I have so many questions.

How the heck was Iduna Northuldra? Did she become “whiter” because she remained inside a castle for twenty years? Or was she always “white passing”? Or was she adopted into the forest? Who are her parents? Did anybody miss her when she ran off to the kingdom? Her scarf was from “one of [their] oldest families” and yet nobody seemed to know who she was? And what do you mean “oldest families”? Are there no remaining members of that family? Nobody who was missing her? Nobody who would’ve recognised her daughters who are literally carbon-copies of her????

The shipwreck scene and the following scene pissed me off soooo much in the theatre lol First, it really was beautiful how they did it, but the interactions felt out of character. Elsa brought up the memories of their parents’ demise without consoling Anna at all. Not only did she just do it without at least a warning, she then proceeded to leave her behind in her own fit. Which, okay, yes, to an extent that makes sense; she was over-ridden by guilt. But those were Anna’s parents too. Elsa was all she had, and Elsa left her behind. I just- AND THEN in this moment of severe grief and horror, as these terrible things were revealed, Anna was pushed away again to be left on her own to deal with things alone. She’d JUST sacrificed her own feelings for Elsa, and Elsa’s response was to shove her away. WHY. I just??? hello??? Like, Elsa does care about Anna, right? That’s canon? So why tf would they write her like this?? jfc

Every single new character was wasted potential. Mattias above all else was very interesting, and should’ve had at least ten minutes more screentime??? I liked the scene of him and Anna discussing whatever, but there should’ve been more. They both cared more about Arendelle than anyone; they were both sworn to protect. There could’ve been more of an on-screen relationship there. (and don’t fucking come at me with your gross-ass ships please, tyvm). Honeymaren and Ryder were there for ??? merchandise? A reason for Elsa to stay behind? Queer-baiting??? I don’t get it. They did,,, nothing. Yelena? Did nothing. Why do these name-characters do nothing?? What’s the point???

This was advertised as a “big adventure” but had hardly any adventure. Frohana was apart for most of the damn movie, the action scenes had little consequences, the “climax” was ??? what, Elsa freezing? Who cares?? It’s obvious she’s going to come back. The wave heading for Arendelle??? Yeah, that would’ve been a good climax if it actually did any damage. But no, I guess Elsa can teleport now? aight. and now she gets to play hero again even though she didn’t do shit

The plot(?) was very predictable, and didnt really have a twist. Old white guy kills innocent POC. Okay. That’s real life, yeah? It’s shit; it happens, but why was this whole movie based around that? Was it a political statement? We don’t really need more political movies these days??? People are aware, and things are shit as is; idk it just felt forced. But this is a v controversial subject so imma shut up lol

THERE ARE NO CONSEQUENCES. Unless you’re Anna. Then you suffer severely cuz,,, fuck her, right? The entire cave thing (as beautiful and needed as it was) could’ve been prevented entirely if Elsa had just fucking communicated. But instead, Anna had to suffer again in such a severe way. Her feelings DID have consequences; they effected her severely and even influenced wreckless behaviour. But then?? it’s all over. And suddenly, it doesn’t matter. Suddenly, who cares? Elsa returns and is (for some unforeseen reason) magically forgiven. This ISN’T HOW SISTERS ARE. If my sister pulled half the shit Elsa did, the first thing she’d be greeted with is a slap across the face and a very loud “fuck you.” THEN she’d get a hug and some tears. You don’t fuck with people’s emotions like that. And the fact that there were no serious consequences is infuriating.

Anna becomes Queen without context. Did she want to be queen? Did she suggest it? Did Elsa decided “eh fuck it i’m bored, your turn” and just dump it on her? Anna is a free-spirit. Yes, she was absolutely devoted to her kingdom; her people always came first; she was an incredibly loving and selfless princess, but was she truly prepared to give up that freedom to be Queen? I think she fits the role beautifully; she was absolutely born to rule. But is she happy? Or is she yet again cleaning up Elsa’s mess, since that seems to be all she does?

Why did Elsa stay in the forest? Is it because she felt like she belonged with the spirits? With the people? Away from civilisation? All of the above? None of the above? And how did that conversation go with Anna? How did she explain; “hey, I know I died and fucked you up and promised that we’d always stay together, but I’ve decided I’m gonna leave you behind again and stay here with these people I barely know.” Did Anna object, or did she see the positives of being away from someone so toxic???? It makes no senseeeee, they were so good together in the first movie; it all feels so out of character. Both of them feel out of character.

Anna laughing at Elsa’s braid-stache.

Elsa making toys for children.

The pleasant Kristanna scenes at the beginning.

Anna’s anger scenes.

Even Elsa’s personal drama???

but that’s it? I’ve seen it four times in theatre, and a few times online (though mostly in pieces) so I don’t think I missed anything. Perhaps I’m blinded by the frustration that this film caused. Overall:

The plot was weak.

The animation was beautiful.

Kristanna wasn’t the Kristanna we truly know?

Elsa was dramatic and annoying because she had no development.

Anna was demoted to a clingy side-character and was given a half-assed purpose.

The music was meh.

There was too much and yet somehow not enough.

It was a mess.

Six years. SIX. I-

final note: PLEASE ANSWER MY QUESTIONS IF I MISSED SOMETHING. I think it’s also important to note that if you went to the theatre for 2 hours of entertainment, that’s great, but not the same as those of us that have dedicated six years of our lives to these characters? So please don’t come @ me if you were just a movie-goer. I also wanna say that there were a lot of parts of this movie that I loved and will hold onto, but overall, the movie as a whole was meh. I LOVED Anna & Elsa in Frozen; they had good development and had reasons for being how they were. They had a good dynamtic and worked well together. I hated their relationship in F2; it was toxic and forced in many ways; they didn’t interact nearly enough, and when they did, they were bitching for the sake of plot, which was very frustrating.

This isn’t a hate post so please don’t come at me lol my opinion is entirely irrelevent in the grand scheme of things, but hey, we’re here to chat and share, right?
