Dean cocked his head to the right and stared at the shop owner. “Aliens?”

Y/N blinked a few times to make sure she was awake. “Aliens.”

The elder shopkeeper nodded. “Yes. Aliens! It has to be.”

Dean closed his eyes for a moment to stop them from rolling and Y/N took her queue.

“Uh… Mr. Weisman,” she said gently, laying a hand on the glass countertop. “Why exactly do you think- I mean, that is to say, how do you- uh… well, what?”

Mr. Weisman smiled sweetly. “I know you must think I’m crazy, what being from the big city and all that, but you’re from the government. Ya gotta know about the alien invasion of 1974.”

Dean choked a tiny bit, hiding it behind a cough. “The invasion of-”

“Of 1974,” Mr. Weisman finished for him. “Yes. The United States was invaded by super beings from outer space and they landed, and still live, right here in Wazoo Township.”

The seriousness in the man’s voice sent an extremely exhausted Dean Winchester right off the deep end and he excused himself, turning away from the counter to hide his laugh.

Y/N moved into his space, turning up the charm so that Mr. Weisman wouldn’t be offended by Dean’s unprofessional display.

She clicked her pen and turned over a clean page in her notebook. “Can you tell me more about these beings?”

“Aliens.” Dean shook his head and wiped a hand down his tired face. “Aliens.” He scratched at the stubble on his jaw and paced the motel floor. “Aliens.”

Y/N rolled her eyes from the table. “You saying it on repeat isn’t going to change it.”

“I know! But… Aliens. The guy thinks aliens are real.”

“Maybe they are.”

Dean laughed. “Honey, the only times I’ve encountered aliens, they turned out to be a Trickster and a bunch of asshole fairies. Aliens do not exist.”

Y/N clicked her tongue. “You can’t know that for sure. The first time you saw an angel, you were sure they didn’t exist.”

“Look, beings from this world, sure. Hell? Yeah. Heaven? Why not. Purgatory? Go for it. But things from outer space that have come here to conquer the earth? No. Not real.”

“Still, you can’t know for sure, Dean. Crazier things have happened. And that guy believes it; there has to be some truth to things.”

“But aliens?”

She sighed. “Or… a thing pretending to be an alien. We just don’t know.”

Dean quit pacing and sat in the chair opposite Y/N, snatching up her notebook. “Did he say what they look like or how to kill ‘em?”

Y/N nodded. “Sure did. They are, quote, giant purple squid-like beings with a thousand tentacles and big suckers on the ends. They can fry your brain with just one touch and you can kill them with a harpoon. So… that’s fun.”

“A harpoon, huh?”

“You’re not saying you suddenly believe, are you?”

Dean chuckled and tossed the notebook back onto the table. “Not for a bit. But… wouldn’t hurt to be prepared.” Springing up, he grabbed his keys from the nightstand. “Don’t wait up…”

“Where the heck are you going?” Y/N asked, snapping around to watch him wrench open the creaky door.

“To the docks. To steal us some alien killing gear.”

With a wink, he was gone.

Y/N lay back in bed, the thin sheet covering her naked legs from any prying eyes. She stretched out and let herself relax, enjoying the quietness that had settled around her since Dean had left for the docks.

Sure, she loved having him around, but sometimes, she craved space. Being alone recharged her, made her more alert, focused.

A thump against the door made her body tense and Y/N sat up, immediately reaching for her gun.

She listened carefully, but all was clear.

She peeked through the curtain, looking out onto the parking lot, but there was not a soul to be seen.

“Don’t freak yourself out, Y/N/N,” she whispered, laughing at herself as she set her pistol down on the table and hopped back into bed. “Just the wind.”

The wind thudded against the door once more but Y/N was wise to it, ignoring the noise. It hit the window too, but again, she let it go.

The wind wrapped around the building until it rapped against the bathroom window, prying it open slowly.

Y/N lay on the bed, half asleep, breathing deep and peacefully.

Her eyes fell closed as the bathroom door gently slipped open.

She barely stirred, eyelids heavy, body still.

The wind slithered across the carpet and crept up the foot of the bed.

Y/N let out a gentle snore.

Under the blankets, the wind swam until it hit her bare feet. It curled, long and eel-like around each ankle, and Y/N woke with a start.

“What the fuck!” She sat up, kicking the blanket away. “Oh my god! Dean!”

The wind was real. Sluglike tentacles wound around her calves, squeezing and massaging with a strange, numbing warmth as they traveled higher.

Y/N swatted at them, twisted her body around, but the tighter they curled, the less she could feel her legs. Her bottom half tingled with a prickly heat that relaxed her muscles and made it impossible for her to move.

“Goddamnit! Dean!”

She clawed at the strange snakes as they crept up her inner thighs, desperate to rip them off. One nail went through the thick, reptilian skin and a sound shot through the room: high pitched and pained, unearthly.

“Fuck. Fuck, fuck!”

A second set of arms appeared from each side of the bed, capturing her wrists and pinning Y/N down onto the bed. Another, thicker, wrapped itself around her waist, a sixth teased the delicate flesh of her neck until it circled her throat, gentle but firmly set.

Y/N gasped as the tingling heat sank into her entire body, calming yet terrifying her.

The tentacles dragged across every inch of her now, slimy but intriguing, they dipped between her thighs, caged her breasts, massaged her arms and neck, lulling her into a definite calmness.

“Oh god… please don’t…”

Her voice was barely a whisper as the arms moved, sliding and slinking between her legs, sneaking beneath her tank top to coast over her nipples.

Y/N’s eyes rolled back as her body surrendered, legs opening at the behest of the tentacles, nipples growing hard and sensitive. She squirmed as the tiny suckered openings at each end of the arms suckled onto her tits, her pulse, her thighs, teasing and exciting her.

Distracted by the pulse of a sucker at her pussy, she didn’t notice the slither by her mouth, didn’t care when the alien arm slipped into the corner and caressed her tongue. Her jaw slacked and the arm slithered inside, slowly, gently, fucking her mouth.

The suckers tugged on her nipples and Y/N moaned gratefully as her body tingled with pleasure. Three arms tore her panties away and she arched her back as her ankles were pulled farther apart.

Shocked, he took aim at the alien and shot, but the target slunk to the left and he did little but graze it.

“Goddamn it, Y/N! Wake up!”

She was lost, moaning on the bed as the alien’s tentacles invaded every inch of her.

Trying to reset, Dean struggled intensely with the harpoon, too engrossed to see the slithering arms as they rushed across the carpet and caught him by the ankles.

“Son of a bitch!”

The touch was cool and instantly numbing. Dean gave it another try, shooting the alien in what he assumed was his chest, but the being seemed to shake it off, the metal arrow falling to the floor.

“OK…” Dean held up his hands in surrender, trying a different approach. “I can see you’re busy here. Maybe I can just come back-”

The eels around his legs tightened as they slid up beneath his jeans and into his boxers. His body tingled with unexpected excitement.

“Fuck. OK. I- wow.”

They slid up higher, caressing his balls and the base of his shaft. His cock twitched.

“I do believe in aliens. I do. Can you just- Fuck.”

Still only half back to reality, Y/N shook herself and stared at him in disbelief. “Dreaming?” She could feel the wetness drip down her thighs. “That was a dream? Holy hell.”

Dean laughed and tossed the harpoon onto the bed. “Yeah. I just got back and you were moaning in your sleep. Good dream, huh?”

She swallowed hard, amazed that there was nothing pulsing down her throat. “I guess. Yeah. Wow.”

He bit his lip and wiggled his brows. “Can I ask what it was got you so worked up?”

Y/N rolled her eyes at him and sighed. “Tentacles, OK? Alien tentacles.”

Dean’s face lit up like Christmas and he laughed. “Oh ho! Look at that!”

“This is your fault,” she said, wagging a finger at him.

“Mine? How is that my fault?”

“You making me watch all that anime porn with you. Got up in my head.”

He smirked. “Looks like it got up in more than just your head.”

Y/N growled. “You can shut the hell up, sir. Besides, it got you too.”

Dean blushed a deep red. “Me?”

“Oh yeah. Right up the ass.”

His jaw dropped and a shiver crept down his spine. “Shit.”

“Yeah,” she laughed. “Now. Let’s go kill this thing before you try to make out with it.”

Dean shuddered. “I still don’t think it’s aliens but-”

“Hey, whatever it is,” Y/N said, grabbing up the harpoon and testing out the sight, “it better keep its hands to itself.”

Omg Ceejay I am so glad you asked 💀 the first time I talked about this, it took me 2.5k words and 7 discord messages so I will take pity on you and give you the abridged version:

"Dean is hunting things" is a nickname. The full name of the theory is "sam is saving people, dean is hunting things, and cas is the family business". The basic premise is that when you look at the character arcs and internal struggles across Supernatural, said arcs/struggles each of the three main guys revolve around a different phrase in the motto "saving people, hunting things, the family business".

Sam is "saving people" because although there's a ton of stress placed on "normal life vs hunting life", with seasons like S8 giving us arcs where Sam tries to go back to having a normal life with Amelia, Sam doesnt really like hunting, he likes saving people. That comes out a lot in episodes that discuss how Sam is willing to let monsters go (like Amy Pond the kitsune in S7) while Dean isn't, and it especially comes out during the demon blood in S4, where "I can save more people like this" is how Sam justifies drinking demon blood. Although Sam wants to have a normal life, being a freak is the price he chooses to pay in order to save people, especially in the earlier seasons.

Dean is "hunting things" because although he is a very protective character who saves people, there is a lot of violence and anger in him that gets explored. Obvious examples include Dean fighting against the violent urges of the Mark of Cain, but even without the Mark corrupting him, it's made clear throughout the show that when it comes to hunting, the act of hunting monsters itself is appealing to Dean. Unlike Sam, Dean doesn't let monsters go free (most times) including when he goes back to kill Amy Pond in S7 after Sam agrees to let her live. After Cas and Dean get sent to Purgatory at the very end of S7, it's made clear that there was part of Dean that enjoyed being in Purgatory, where all he had to do was hunt monsters, and he's ashamed of that part of himself.

Importantly, I think it would be wrong to call Dean "the family business" because although protecting his family is a core part of Dean's motivations, it's also never a *choice* to him. He will always save Sam, no matter what, so its not really an arc or internal struggle.

Finally, Cas is "the family business". The meaning of this phrase in context is basically that Dean is telling Sam that because they are Winchesters, they have a duty to be save people and hunt things. Similarly, Cas is a character with a strong sense of duty because he is an angel. In seasons 7-9 we get this really dramatic cycle of Castiel trying and failing to fix Heaven, and when he breaks Heaven, he feels a sense of duty to try and fix it, but trying to fix it leads to making everything worse (like when he works with Metatron at the end of S8). He does a similar thing with Jack in seasons 12+, where once he latches onto protecting Jack as his duty, there is nothing he wouldnt do, including sacrificing himself and his happiness. One quote that springs to mind is Cas's "I'm always happy to bleed for the Winchesters" in,,,,,,s7? Im like 90% sure I was watching season 7 while I came up with this bc of the amount of evidence I pull from that era 💀

I’m sure someone’s done this before me and done it better, but I’m compiling a huge Destiel evidence docket for no reason. Anyone got any quotes to add?

Before taking on the role of God, Cas seemed very concerned with Dean’s forgiveness/acceptance/love. It is interesting that, as God, that was the first thing he asked for, turning from Sam (who had just stabbed him) to Dean to ask for love.

“Sam, and everyone you know, everyone you love, they could be long dead. Everyone except me.” (10x22)

“I love you. I love all of you.” (Arguably to the group, but the first “I love you” can be seen as Dean-specific, especially since it cuts to Dean after being said.) (12x12)

“You mean too much to me. To everything.” (12x9) (To Mary, Sam, and Dean. However, the camera immediately cuts to Dean specifically, even though he is in the back of the group).

“I’m your Huckleberry.” (13x06)

This is said as Castiel is breaking away from Naomi’s mind control—mind control she fostered specifically by having Cas kill a thousand versions of Dean. This implies she knows that Cas’s strongest loyalty is to Dean, not Sam, or humans in general.

“The point is that they [Dean & Sam] were here at all and you got to know them, you -- When they're gone, it will hurt, but that hurt will remind you of how much you loved them.” (14x14)

“You know, Dean, he... he feels things more acutely than any human I've ever known.” (15x13)

Other Comments

Reaper: “How do I start looking for this... Castiel?” Bartholomew: “I got one word for you. Winchester.”

Rowena: “An Angel of the Lord, shattered at the altar of Winchester.”

Use of We vs. I

In the crypt scene in Season 8, Dean tells Cas, “We need you.” This is not enough to stop Cas’s actions. When the language switches to “I need you,” Cas drops the angel blade.

We can clearly see that Dean tries to put up barriers about how he really feels about Cas in his use of “We.” For example, after showing the audience many scenes of Dean, not Sam, frantically trying to call Cas, we get the following lines:

“So not only were you ditching us, but you were also ignoring us?”

“With everything that's going on, you can't just go dark like that. We didn't know what happened to you. We were worried. That's not okay.”

It’s clear that these “we’s” are really “I’s”

In the alternate future presented in 15x9, Sam asks Dean, “What’s happened to you Dean… ever since…?” to which Dean responds, “Ever since what? We lost pretty much everyone we’ve ever cared about? Ever since the Mark made Cas go crazy and I had to bury him in a Malak box… ever since then?” While he acknowledges Sam’s losses as well, his switch to “I” in reference to Cas implies that Cas’s loss belongs especially to him.

(Mostly) Verbal Parallels to Other Couples

In 1x01 (start at 2:27), Dean pulls Sam away from a dead Jess in a direct parallel to how Sam pulls Dean away from Cas in 12x23

Following Jessica’s death, Sam keeps seeing glimpses of her as he and Dean travel around in the Impala. Dean does the same in Season 8 following his return from Purgatory without Cas.

David from “Bloodlines” (9x20) tells his love interest, “I was there. Where were you?” which is the same thing Dean says to Cas in “The Man Who Would Be King” (6x20)

When asking Dean whether he’s in love with Cassie, Dean gives a similar response to what he will say in 10x5 when asked about Destiel.

Destiel is paralleled with their counterparts from the Supernatural play who are “a couple in real life” (10x5)

Cain compares himself to Dean in Season 10. He describes the significant kills of his life (The Knights of Hell, his wife Collette, and his brother Abel) and tells Dean that he will follow his same pattern by killing the King of Hell Crowley, Castiel, then Sam. It is also mentioned that all Collette asked of Cain was “to stop,” which is the same language Cas uses with Dean in 10x22.

Dean explains how his parents fell in love to prove his identity to Mary in 12x1, “He was cute and he knew the words to every Zeppelin song, so when he asked you for your number, you gave it to him, even though you knew your dad would be pissed.” Later in this same season (12x19), Dean gives Cas a homemade mixtape of his favorite Zeppelin songs.

Ishim fell in love with a human named Lily Sunder who ultimately left him for someone else. When trying to recruit Castiel, he compares Dean to her.

Dean questions how much of their life has been controlled by God. Cas states, “You asked, ‘What about all of this is real?’ We are.” (15x02) Later, they find out that God has been using Eileen to spy on the Winchesters. She says, “After what happened, I don’t know what’s real anymore.” Sam kisses her, stating “I know that was real.” (15x09)

Vol. CXXIII

It was a love story from the very beginning

Missing Each Other

(15x06/15x07/15x08)

Hello my friends! We are still walking over the last Destiel breakup. I'm gonna talk in this meta about how they miss each other even when they're mad at each other. Because they're two dumbasses in love.

Come Back Home

Previous episode we saw a visual reference that linked Dean with a fish. Now in episode 15x06 we have Castiel trying to catch a (hard) fish and walking around a fishing ship, mentioning Dean to let us know, the symbolism about that sneaking fish. Castiel misses him.

Another important visual element in this episode was the lady reading a book that pictures the Destiel breakup we are witnessing and writers are making it one of the centric topics.

I'm talking about the Destiel color coded lady, with a hint of pink (happiness)...

...reading a novel titled: "Lovers Quarrel".

An now, let's talk about the awkward Destiel phonecall.

Let me tell you that Dean didn't have to ask to talk with Castiel when he was speaking with the sheriff, but he did it anyway. Why? Because he missed Castiel.

Even so, he won't recognize it. Because he is still mad, and Castiel is still mad, then why is Dean asking for him?

Because he needed to scold him about not answering Sam's messages. Because Sam is messaging him, but Dean is not.

And then...

Look at this:

DEAN: Would you put my agent on the phone, please?

He can't lose the opportunity to talk with Cas.

SHERIFF ROY [handing the phone to Cas]: He wants to talk to you.

CASTIEL: Hello?

He wasn't happy about it, at all. As a parallel with that phonecall in season 14, in which Castiel said it was good to hear Dean's voice, this time it isn't.

DEAN: Cas. Sam's been trying to call you.

CASTIEL: I know.

DEAN: Did you check his messages?

CASTIEL: Nope.

Dean is behaving very childish here, and Castiel isn't checking the Winchester's messages, because he really wanted to move on from them, from Dean.

DEAN: Right. Smart. Why would you? Look, I don't know if you care or not, but, uh... God... Chuck... is back on the board, so watch yourself. And check your damn messages.

After this, Dean suddenly cut the call, and Castiel looks very upset about that. But thing about these words Dean told him has a hidden message:

And then... "Chuck is back in the game." Is the same as if Dean wanted to say HEY CAS YOU LEFT BECAUSE CHUCK WAS GONE, WELL, HE IS BACK, SO... YOU HAVE TO COME BACK BECAUSE CHUCK IS BACK. NOT BECAUSE I'M MISSING YOU SO MUCH AND I'M SO DEPRESSED SINCE YOU LEFT, BUT BECAUSE CHUCK IS BACK.

That's so Dean, right?

A miscellaneous point I repeated so many times in all my metas from this season was, Castieo was related to people dressing green and pink and Dean with people dressing blue and pink: THIS IS BECAUSE THEY'RE EACH OTHER'S HAPPINESS.

Another symbolic reference, this time related to Dean's behavior, it's the following piece of dialogue between Dean and Sam at the beginning of the scene:

DEAN: You know they still put, um, jokes on the backs of these things. Listen to this one... What's round and bad-tempered? "A vicious circle." (...)

This is self referencing over here, my friends, because is talking about how Dean is stuck in his toxicity, and his way to "solve" his problems and repress his feelings m is a vicious circle that never ends, and he's playing in the same line, and lying to himself. The bad temper, is a reflection of Toxic Dean, and he's trapped in this vicious circle, and he needs to MOVE ON to make things changing.

And because we had people moving in this episode, it's another symbolic analogy to what Dean must do to grow up.

Bi!Dean episode and Dean's attempt to fix things with Castiel

Episode 15x07 was full of Bi!Dean subtext.

Dean is praised by a male sheriff, and we had a waitress flirting with him. And Dean rejecting her all the time. Why? Because he behaves as a married guy, married with Castiel, if you know what I mean.

We had the whole bi flag lighting when Dean was singing on the stage, and this whole sexual tension with his old friend, Castiel's mirror.

Jumping from Bi!Dean to the Destiel breakup, we had this symbolic dialogue:

When Dean found the girl at the bar, he interrogates her, but Lee, his friend, called him, and the words he says: "She went without saying goodbye?" "Well, maybe she deserved it."

This was related to episode 15x03 when Castiel walked away from Dean. It felt as if he didn't say goodbye to Dean, 'but maybe Dean deserved it.'

Keeping the drama here, we had Castiel calling Dean the whole episode and Dean not answering the phone.

Castiel came back to the bunker because he had a plan, but when things doesn't work well, he calls Dean... A lot of times. But Dean didn't answer... Just like a cheating husband. Cas lost his temper and he even shouts WHERE ARE YOU!? At the phone.

Avoiding the whole Swayze's Bar and Rocky's Bar parallels you can find in my meta link on the top of this analysis, let's just go to the 'Lovers Quarrel scene and enjoy the failed attempt from Dean to fix things with Cas... à la Dean.

When Dean appeared at the bunker, Castiel's face is about surprise, relief, and a hint of heart eyes, Dean is acting as if nothing had happened between them, just like I expected to occur, because is his way to avoid things. But this time it won't work, because CAS recalls immediately Dean's hard words and the last call, and he recalls that THEY DIDN'T PART FRIENDS (this quote from episode 7x17 when they came back to see each other after the break up in season 6).

That's why I said Dean is trying to fix things à la Dean here, just acting as if nothing happened. It's the coward way to try to approach the love of your life.

Awkward, horrible and wonderful, Awkward silence. The romantic tension here! Even my dog saw it. This was deliberately written and performing to show what it is: ROMANTIC TENSION.

This was gold... because Dean's face is yelling: Uh, oh, wait, don't go, we still can chat a little... oh wait, right. Things are still bad... got it.

So, Cas changed his face, and he just threw a few words, and leaves, quickly. Dean senses this, and he just grimaced, okay... What did you expect, Dean? Things are not good. You need to use your words!

Imagine their hearts running fast, dry mouth, knowing they love each other so much and they missed each other so much. They're finally in the same room, but things are not good. Castiel is very hurt and Dean can't spell the magic words.

And now, it his wasn't enough Destiel pining for you... we had this last scene:

Dean stares at Castiel, and Castiel feels that look, but he didn't look back at Dean. This is because Castiel is trying to show Dean how much he hurted him. The Destiel eye-fuck/eye-love making has been always their way of intimate communication. Well. Castiel cut it off here. Just like Dean did with that phonecall.

Time to Fix things. Time for Purgatory 2.0

The whole episode 15x08 showed how broken were Destiel. Dean and Castiel were shown in divided, separated, in all the frames.

Castiel didn't touch Dean to heal him FOR THE FIRST TIME. This scene was very meaningful to show things are not good.

We also had the scene with Rowena, in which they were sitting far away from each other, another empty seat in the middle, and Rowena noticing this, and obviously, giving that married couple a good speech. Almost yelling at them to fix their mess.

So, if Dean and Castiel had to fix their relationship, what better than go to Purgatory again. The place where Dean realized he was in love with Castiel. Because it was pure, and his feelings and thoughts alined into one spot: THE LOVE HE FEELS FOR THAT ANGEL.

After this scene, Dean and Castiel spoke with Michael, and did you know what Michael says in one of his lines?:

ADAM: What about 'I'm sorry'?

LEGENDARY MY FRIENDS! The whole Universe was yelling at Dean to use his words and ask for forgiveness to his angel, to fix things with him. That's why karma sent them back to Purgatory.

Miscellaneous: two things I want to point about Saileen: they were mirroring Destiel the whole time, even the goodbye scene and even Dean calling Eileen as the hot woman perfect for Sam, that understands him, it was a reference to Castiel, the perfect man for Dean, that understands him and is pretty hot.

Second is the fact that Castiel cockblocked Sam and Eileen. Again, karma. 🤣

To Conclude:

The 'Lovers Quarrel' was shown in the show as one of the centric topics. GA could see and be aware of the ROMANTIC TENSION between these two.

But don't worry, the breakup is coming to it's end in the next episode. One of the most beautiful Destiel scenes, and is happening in Purgatory of love 2.0.

Fics That Changed Me Fundamentally

The reason SAS Captain Arthur Pendragon can’t keep a communications specialist in Team Excalibur because none of them are good enough. And then Lieutenant Merlin Emrys gets assigned to his squad, and Arthur does everything he can to prove that Merlin isn’t good enough, either. Except he is.

You can read all about my thoughts on Loaded March here, here, and here. Basically this fic series is beautifully written, has absolutely delicious UST, has found family, magic, and high stakes. It’s been part of my life for almost a decade now, I made friends through LM that I still have to this day, and it genuinely changed me as a person. Plus there are 78k of Extras to itch that I Finished Now What scratch. Parts 1-5 have been podficced and you can find them in works inspired by this one in each part.

The world’s already over and they’re already dead. All they’re doing now is marking time until the end.

S7!Dean is transported back to the aftermath of where 5x04 The End left off. Much like LM, DtA was one that I avoided for a while. I didn’t think it would be my thing. I’m not usually into End!verse, it sounded so bleak from the summary, and it sounded so long for something I wasn’t sure about. If you’re reading this and nodding along? You are as much a fool as I was. Yes, it’s the end of the world. But it’s not over yet. This is a beautiful journey in what it means to be yourself, how to survive the end of the world, a How-To for Coups, and a study in food as a love language. I only read this fic this year, but like LM, it has genuinely changed me. Map of the World has been podficced.

Supernatural

Let’s start with the current hyperfixation. All of these are at least passively Dean/Cas unless otherwise stated. I've split into ones from my first time around in the SPN fandom and more recent ones because the vibes are actually really different and it took me some time to adjust (Not in a bad way! In a time has passed they have grown as characters way)

Castiel swore he was done with spur of the moment decisions that permanently changed Dean Winchester's life. A year after the angel's most disastrous, his newest may present the largest challenge of dean's life: Fatherhood.

Did someone say kid!fic in canonverse? This is perfect. Canon divergence from the end of S6. Cas saves a baby from a neglectful mother and gives him to Dean to raise. They all move in with Bobby. Great OCs. Bobby considers Cas his son. Listen everything I say here will not be able to begin to encompass how much I love this fic. Just trust me on this one.

Jesus Christ is dead. Somehow, that isn't the worst part of Dean's week.

With a summary like that, need I say more? No but I'm gonna. This is one of the funniest fics I've ever read, but it doesn't take any emotion from the serious moments, if anything it heightens them. There are so many quotes from this I think about all the time. It was written in 2010 and so there's a bit of misogyny/character assassination of Anna in places.

Second Childhood by CloudyJenn (read by exmanhater) G | 16k (1h30) | 10k hits

"Dude, I can't do this whole thing by myself," Dean said with far more desperation leaking into his tone than he liked. It would just be too much to make it through hell and death and Lucifer only to have Castiel bail on him because of a frigging baby.

They beat the Apocalypse (OG-S5) and then Sam gets de-aged by a spell. I've listened to this so many times I know it by heart, it's an ultimate comfort fic to me.

Defy Any and All Expectation* by Tenoko1 (read by Tenoko1) M | 138k (14hrs) | 37k hits

Chuck's newly released books tell of another war between Heaven and Hell. Team Free Will sets out to try to defy prophecy, only to realize there is a lot more at stake and amiss than the not-quite-accurate words of one Prophet of the Lord. Along the way, Dean and Cas' relationship continues to evolve into something neither expected or were prepared for, all of their lives transforming in ways no one could have expected. But with no shortage of cases, monsters, and mayhem, it's going to require the help of new friends and old enemies if they're to have a hope of saving the world one more time. Alternate Season Six.

So this is a re-written version of Tenoko1's The Path We Choose which I don't think is around anymore. By the time I was reading the re-write as each chapter came out, I knew every single line of TPWC and it wasn't all that much shorter. It's such a perfect canon divergence because they are all 100% in-character. If you're into podfic, you already know what an absolute gift 14 hours is, but if you have never tried podfic before, Tenoko1 is a fantastic place to start. Her voice is soothing and energetic and her Cas sometimes comes to mind when I'm reading fic in Misha's place (sorry Misha)

His Fucking Kids 'Verse by 8sword M | 96k(Series)/ 3k (first part) | 26k hits (first part)

Jesus, the school should just have a parking spot labeled, “Reserved for the Novak-Winchesters,” because Dean’s getting sick of having to cruise around the parking lot looking for a spot every time he gets a call from the principal about Emma.

Emma survives and Dean and Cas are raising her and Claire. This fic series will make you laugh, make you cry, and (nowadays) make you wish Emma had survived to be a part of Wayward Sisters.

One Species Too Many by wallmakerrelict E | 22k | 37k hits

While Dean is laid up for a month after breaking his leg on a hunt, Cas decides that it's a perfect time to adopt a litter of kittens. But even though he's gotten better since Purgatory, Cas still isn't quite the same as he was before fixing Sam's head, and being trapped in a cabin with him for weeks on end is making that all the more obvious to Dean. When Sam takes off on a hunt, Dean has to figure out on his own how to navigate his new relationship with Cas while also helping to raise a bunch of fuzzballs that aren't even cute. Not even a little bit. (Well, maybe a little bit.)

Dean breaks his legs, and honey!Cas brings home some kittens to foster. It's achingly sweet and also painful because you know Dean wants to fix Cas but there's nothing to fix. It is tagged for ableism for this.

Tripping* by Hatteress E | 49k | 78k hits

That time the universe decided Dean belonged with Cas and wasn't afraid to pull out the big guns to make it so. Big guns in this case being obsessive fangirls, archangels turned tricksters and overly enthusiastic cupids. Welcome to Dean's life.

Alt!S5 and it is beautiful. Also any fic with Missouri is an automatic win.

Broadway Musical by Grifitings M | 12k | 79k hits

This is the day that marked the Holy and Blessed Union of Dean Winchester and Jo Harvelle. The merging of prominent bloodlines is always a grand occurrence, but breeding pedigree hunter families like Winchester and Harvelle is something to be rejoiced. It is also something to be meticulously planned, which thankfully the Host is very good at. Or, the romantic comedy where Dean Winchester and Jo Harvelle are destined to get married, Castiel is given the task of playing matchmaker and fails terribly, the entire Heavenly Host becomes a sitcom audience, God warns against male pregnancy, and Jimmy Novak is incredibly unimpressed with angels in general.

Jimmy deserves a sainthood and frankly I don't even want to hear about crack if it's not on the level of the Host yelling at Cas not to touch the butt.

Classic AUs (AKA AUs from my first time around)

Try Something Tuesday by almaasi E | 48k | 144k hits

Dean Winchester teaches a third-grade class. He's new to this whole ‘bisexual’ thing - but by pure happenstance, he meets Castiel: a particularly dapper male librarian who moonlights as a substitute teacher. Dean's curious and Castiel is willing, so why the hell not? Except, fate never intended it to be one-time-only...

This was one of the first spn fics to really really stay with me and it never really left.

Rock 'n' Roll Queer Bar by ChasingRabbits E | 127k(Series)/ 8k (Part1) | 29k hits (Part1)

Ellen and Jo Harvelle run Harvelle's Roadhouse, a bar that unintentionally becomes a beacon for wayward queer souls. Her employees: Dean, the smartass runaway with a big heart and bigger mouth; Castiel, the college drop-out turned hippie; his (surprisingly heterosexual) trouble-making brother Gabriel; and Charlie, who has been told several times that the back room is not to be used for after-hours Dungeons & Dragons games. But there's a lot of love in this place, and a new family for anyone who may otherwise be without.

This series. If you've ever felt unsure or out of place or anxious or just really felt like no-one understood you, this fic is for you. I first found this series when I was coming to terms with my queerness and I genuinely think it was invaluable. Also I am a sucker for the go for a dinner at Cas's family and end up storming out trope.

Play It All Night Long by janie_tangerine (read by Tenoko1) NC17 | 43k (4hrs)

The rom-com-ish one where Dean hosts a late night radio show, Castiel is a regular listener of his who starts calling one day and ends up calling more often than not and Dean finds himself liking it. This, until one day Castiel calls for not exactly petty reasons (just before Dean's brother Sam is visiting with his girlfriend for spring break) and things get very, very crowdy at his place. He also doesn't know it's just the beginning of it. Also features Gabriel, Chuck, Andy, the Roadhouse crew and a huge amount of music quoted. Especially Bob Dylan.

Again, this podfic has got me through many a night of insomnia. Cas calls in after a particularly shitty day and it all goes from there.

New-School SPN (AKA post-2014)

“I think we should have a garden,” Cas says. Dean looks up from his beer. He hasn’t had that much to drink, but Cas still has a vague look of unreality about him, a splash of living color that doesn’t fit in the bunker’s echoing stillness. Dean didn’t hear him coming. A lot of the time, Cas is so unobtrusive it feels like Dean has the bunker to himself, with Sam away. Dean shakes his head to clear it. “A — garden?” he repeats.

There is a reason you will see this recced time and time again. It healed parts of me I didn't know needed healing.

So Says the Sword* by komodobits E | 85k | 73k hits

The briefing was simple: ‘Stand guard over the Michael Sword until the battle is ready to commence. Await further instructions.’ Castiel doesn’t mind working security duty; he was briefed shortly after the initial salvation of the Sword from the pit, and again before taking up his position. He knows what to do. However, it’s easy to forget that the green room isn’t real. Time moves differently there, the space ever-changing to make a prison of mountains, cathedrals, salt flats, orchards, and whatever Castiel was led to believe about Heaven’s greatest weapon—Dean Winchester is something entirely unexpected

I saw ssts mentioned in like every single If you're getting back into the fandom READ THIS rec list. For good reason. It's described as "canon-adjacent in that seasons one to three happened exactly the same, but when Dean goes to Hell, he is not raised by Castiel". It's one of the most interesting concepts I've read and it's one of those fics where the writing style will stick with you. Castiel POV in a way you've never read before.

Aching in the Absence of You* by sobsicles E | 95k | 9k hits (in 5 days)

Brittle and battle-worn, Cas looks at him over coffee one morning and says, "I need to go," and Dean instantly knows that he's not coming back. He's not really sure how he knows it, but he does. It settles into the pit of his stomach, curling hot and tight like something he instinctively wants to tear out with his bare hands. He takes a breath, and it gets stuck in his throat, hitching there. It hurts, hurts, hurts when he finally exhales. "Yeah," Dean says, "of course you do," and he nods jerkily as he looks down at his phone. He doesn't say goodbye. He doesn't look up from the screen when Cas gets up and leaves the room. He doesn't finish his coffee, or move for a long time. By nightfall, Cas is gone.

If you don't already know sobsicles, I am delighted to introduce you to the person who will smash you to pieces with a hammer to put you back together Kintsugi-style. This one is post-finale but without 15x18 (it'll make sense as it goes). Cas says he's going to leave again and again Dean doesn't ask him to stay. Full of lines so beautiful they'd make Shakespeare weep, Sobsicles has this way of writing that is so evocative and paints such a clear picture. Fair warning, if you're Dean-coded, this might be A Lot.

Yes, two sobsicles recs back to back. This one I read first and it still holds such a special place in my heart. A sign of a good fic is being able to picture it perfectly. The sign of an amazing fic is that when reading this I was so in Dean's shoes I could feel a pool cue between my hands and Baby behind my back. And I sobbed like a baby in this. It has probably my favourite ending ever. It's genuinely beautiful. If you don't read another on this list, read this one.

In a world where the supernatural live more or less in peace with the rest of humanity, it’s a little impolite to ask Cas just what he really is - or what his dark past entails.

A fantastic magical realism fic - magical creatures live and work with humans. Gabe and Cas run a coffee shop, Dean is a fireman, and the burn is slow and delicious and the intrigue kept me reading for like a week every single spare minute.

Dean's a broken man, with a lot of scars and secrets, shoulders weighed down by his demons and self loathing. Cas sees a second chance with the man he's never stopped loving, but Dean's moved on, and is about to get married. Sam launches a "brilliant" plan to reunite his brother and his best friend, but Cas is worried it will all blow up in their faces, and he'll go through the agony of losing Dean a second time.

The first part of this I actually saved back when I was first in the fandom but I never got around to reading it (I had a To Read folder of 100+ fics that I absolutely dove into when I got back into spn) and the rest of the series finished in 2016 so I'm counting it in this section not the other. On the one hand, I wish I'd read this when it first came out. It's beautiful and heartbreaking, and so visual. On the other hand, I think I appreciated it a lot more now than I would have seven years ago. The parallel of me coming back to the old fandom that I loved dearly with Cas coming back to see someone and places he loved so much really hit. (Although coming back to the spn fandom was much easier and much less heartbreak!)

Therapy through getting tattoos and telling your life story to someone who obviously doesn't think it's real. Outsider!POV not just done well, but done literally the best.

Thank god the hypochondriac's there to keep an (slightly too) attentive eye on their stress levels. The revolutionary thinks the graffiti artist's work is a waste of space. The artist thinks the revolutionary's campaigns are a waste of time. And all the while, the poet and the flirt drool over each other in the background...

This is perfect and it's funny and it's beautiful and it rips my heart out multiple times.

It's nothing I would have usually read (canon era, not e/R, MCD) but I am so glad I gave it a go. It's a study on what if Combeferre had survived the barricades too and the guilt. This stayed with me for days afterwards until I eventually messaged kjack89 to get permission to podfic it.

Hi, Rae! I, always being late to the party, have just stumbled out of studying fir my degree into your amazing stuff. I know NOTHING about spn and I understand that it is a very long series. Is there some way I can get a rudimentary grasp of the storyline without having to binge like a pate de fois gras goose? I am in love with your writing but I know I’m missing a lot. Thanks!

Hoo boy, buckle in! Supernatural is a truly bonkers (affectionate) show with plenty of skippable episodes, so sitting down and watching all 327 episodes is NOT recommended for your health.

Honestly, what kept me going in Supernatural (I started watching 2013-ish) was the fandom. There are such great fanworks out there, so I'll give a rundown of my top eps for understanding the bulk of fanfic and Destiel.

I picked 20ish, squeezing 15 seasons into the span of 1 season. I've watched all of these at least three or four times for fun or fic references.

Before starting a new season, I recommend skimming through the supernatural wiki season-specific pages, (here's s4) for a general overview of the plot. Hopefully this helps!

4.01 Lazarus Rising Why it's Important (WIP): Castiel's first episode! As for background, last season, Dean made a deal with a demon to bring Sam back to life after he was stabbed. Before the episode starts, Castiel rescues Dean from Hell and this ep culminates in their first meeting.

4.16 On the Head of Pin WIP: Cas takes his first steps towards free will in this ep by doubting Heaven. The angel Anna, who fell from Heaven by choice (and slept with Dean in 4.10 Heaven and Hell before regaining her powers [grace]) is in this one as well. We also get a look at how deep Dean's guilt and self-loathing runs for what he did in Hell. There's a reason Dean Winchester's Self-Worth Issues is one of my favorite tags.

4.17 It's a Terrible Life WIP: The ep that spawned a dozen Office!AUs, plus gave us gifs of Dean in red suspenders. If you ever find a fic where Dean's on a cleanse or is overly concerned about market share, it comes from this ep.

5.4 The End WIP: Another AU-influencer, maybe the biggest of the series. For the background, the angels want Sam and Dean to let themselves be vessels for the archangels Lucifer and Michael, respectively, to carry out the apocalypse. So far, Sam and Dean have both said no. One of the angels' tactics is to hurl Dean 5 years into the future, smack in the middle of the apocalypse that happened anyway. If you see fics tagged Endverse!Cas, this is what it is referring to. Ditto with most fics featuring drug user!Cas or hedonist!Cas

5.8 Changing Channels WIP: Most influential ep featuring the Trickster. Also hilarious.

5.17 99 Problems WIP: So many great Cas quotes in this ep because he's drunk off his ass after losing faith in God. "You breed with the mouth of a goat" "Don't ask stupid questions" "It is not of import"

6.20 The Man Who Would be King WIP: After the apocalypse failed last season, there was a civil war in Heaven for control - Raphael (pro-apocalypse) on one side against Castiel (anti-apocalypse). Castiel teams up with Crowley, the King of Hell, for enough power to take on Raphael, which he keeps a secret since he knows the Winchesters don't trust demons. Obviously, when they find out, they take it as a betrayal. Perhaps thee best Cas-centric ep of the show.

7.20 The Girl with the Dungeons and Dragons Tattoo WIP: The first episode with Charlie Bradbury! Geek, lesbian, and hacker, she works for the main antagonists of the season, the Leviathans, until she finds out what they are. She frequently pops up as Sam and Dean's best friend in a crap ton of fic. FYI, the Leviathans were unleashed into the world from Purgatory as an unintended result of Cas's work with Crowley.

7.21 Reading is Fundamental WIP: The first episode with Kevin! For background, after Cas made that deal with Crowley, he "died", he came back with amnesia, he remembered, and then he went insane (to make a long story short, back at the end of s6, Sam's soul got majorly fucked up, and in 7.17 Cas couldn't heal him, so he transferred the soul-injuries to himself). In this ep, we get "follow the bees" Crazy Cas and, of course, Kevin's introduction as a Prophet of the Lord.

8.5 Blood Brother WIP: At the end of s7, Dean got chucked into Purgatory along with Cas when they got rid of the Leviathans. Benny, a vampire from Purgatory, showed them the way out and made a deal that he would hitch a ride, as only humans can leave. To a lesser degree than Charlie, Benny also is fandom favorite best friend for Dean. This ep, where they track down Benny's old vamp crew, is probably the best dive into their canon relationship. Plus vampirates!

8.12 As Time Goes By WIP: At the end of this ep, we get the introduction to the Bunker, which is Sam and Dean's home base for the rest of the series. The plot touches on a bunch of Winchester Family Issues (TM) that have been a theme throughout the series. You can read the John Winchester's A+ Parenting tag between the lines of this one.

9.6 Heaven Can't Wait WIP: The second (and better) human!Cas episode. Cas got his grace stolen for a spell to close Heaven at the end of last season, so he's mostly human now. Dean kicked him out of the bunker because the angel possessing Sam told him to (the angel is healing Sam at a sub-atomic level, so for the time being, his word is law). Oh, and all the angels that fell to Earth hate Cas because they think he closed Heaven on purpose. Many fans read this ep with their "mutual pining" glasses on.

9.11 First Born WIP: This is one of two eps in the whole series to focus on besties, Sam and Cas. It's delightful and pure chaos. (See 14.15 Peace of Mind for more Sastiel [kidding] shenanigans). If you ever see Cas obsessing over PB&Js or guinea pigs (not kidding), it comes from this ep.

10.1 Black WIP: For plot reasons, Dean's a demon now. His favorite activities are karaoke and caving people's skulls in. A bunch of fics actually featured Dean as a demon way earlier, really ever since we found out that if a soul spends too much time in Hell, it will become a demon (3.9 Malleus Maleficarum), so there's a split between author-envisioned Demon!Dean and the canonical Deanmon that came 7 years later.

10.9 The Things We Left Behind WIP: The first Claire-centric ep! She's the daughter of Cas's vessel, Jimmy Novak. She's sassy, from a broken home, and likes to hit things. Basically Dean if he was blonde and a teenager. I love her. By this point, Dean's human again, but he still has demonic impulses that he has to control.

11.4 Baby WIP: A great monster of the week ep from the POV of Sam and Dean's car. It really demonstrates what Dean and Sam are like day-to-day on a standard hunt.

11.11 Into the Mystic WIP: First episode with Eileen, who's the most popular love interest for Sam post-4.01 Lazarus (previous [dead] ladies include Ruby [s3], Madison [2.17 Heart], Sarah Blake [1.19 Provenance] and Jess [1.1 Pilot]). Eileen dies in the next season, but she gets better (15.5 Golden Time)! Note, non-canonically, a lot of people ship Sam/Gabriel, but that's not really my thing, so I don't have any ep references.

12.11 Regarding Dean WIP: I know Rowena's been around for a few seasons by now (she has a B-plot in 10.9 on this list) but this ep represents best how she's portrayed in fic. FYI, she's the most powerful witch in the world, mother of the King of Hell (really), and sometimes a villain. Most fics don't show her at worst - she's normally a reluctant ally, like in this ep, with her own agenda that may or may not fuck up the Winchesters later down the line.

13.1 Lost and Found WIP: The beginning of Dean's widower arc! In the season finale last season, Cas gets stabbed and dies. In this ep, Dean punches a door. It's very emotional. This is also Jack's first episode, aka the Winchesters' Accidental Baby Acquisition. He's not actually a baby, though. He is the son of Lucifer and a human woman, making him a nephilim and super powerful.

13.6 Tombstone WIP: Dean's obsession with the wild west is well documented (see all the way back to 6.18 Frontier Land), but this time he gets to do a cowboy-themed hunt with Cas! With hats!

15.3 The Rupture WIP: I honestly wasn't sure if I should include 15.1, 15.2, or 15.3 or all three. These eps are all tied together; basically God was tired of the Winchesters getting angry at him for controlling them. God told them to kill Jack because Jack was a danger to him; they refused; and he killed Jack anyway and also opened a fissure to Hell just because. In this ep, the Winchesters plus Rowena, and a demon possessing Jack's corpse, are all trying to close the fissure. This ep sets up Dean and Cas's last relationship arc.

15.9 The Trap WIP: The last important shift in Dean and Cas's relationship before - well, you'll find out.

15.18 Despair WIP: For background, Jack died last season too (14.8 Byzantium) and Cas went up to Heaven to make a deal - Jack's life for his. But the deal wound up being, Cas would die once he experienced a true moment of happiness. Can you guess what happens in this ep? Can you??? This ep aired on Nov 5th and single-handedly caused the biggest surge in Destiel activity in decades. Are we still in the fallout of this ep a year later? You betcha. Like Chernobyl.

dean is all “you can't ask me to do this, cas. not this.” (about torturing alastair) and uriel is all “who said anything about asking”, but cas is all: “this is too much to ask, i know. but we have to ask it” and that is the moment that dean realizes that cas cares about him and his feelings/well-being and that’s when he demands to speak to cas alone

and it’s only after cas tells dean he really doesn’t want dean being forced to do the torturing that Dean gives in (”i would give anything not to have you do this”)

like, it’s so obvious already how much cas cares about dean already and we’re only in s4

cas is even starting to go down the path of disobedience (with a little help from anna admittedly, but still. he’s starting to consider it)

they’re so?? comfortable?? with each other. when cas visits dean at the hospital in the end

4x22 - Lucifer Rising

dean literally makes an angel fall in this ep, i mean come on... (the way cas shows up behind him all “you asked to see me” after dean smashes the angel statue cracks me up every single time gsdlka)

dean desperately trying to get cas to help him (bc he knows that IF there’s an angel that would help him it’s cas)

cas is too afraid though and dean gets pissed and literally breaks up with him (D: "you spineless, soulless son of a bitch. what do you care about dying? you're already dead. we're done." C: "dean-" D: "we're done!")

this is the episode in which cas makes his decision and chooses dean over heaven

5x03 - Free to Be You and Me

in the previous episode sam and dean had a fight and split up. this episode starts out with dean being pissed and annoyed and just in a bad mood in general

when cas shows up and asks for help dean is very grumpy and doesn’t want to help at first but then reluctantly agrees

throughout the episode, the more time dean spends with cas the better his mood gets (honestly this point is worthy of its own separate post, i have enough screenshots lmao)

like he’s even smiling at the end of the ep when he’s talking to cas in the car!! (except then he looks over and realizes cas has left mid-conversation again and that smile is wiped right off his face and i’m sad :( )

when they’re in that brothel dean mostly has eyes for cas, even when chastity the hooker is standing right next to him

when raphael is trapped in the holy oil and threatens cas all “castiel, I'm warning you. do not leave me here. i will find you.” and cas goes “maybe one day. but today, you're my little bitch.” and walks away and dean tells raphael “what he said” like the impressed and proud boyfriend that he is

i mean... this one is obvious isn’t it

this ep is literally all about how cas is doing everything for the winchesters aka dean

the way sam and bobby cautiously voice their suspicions of cas to dean has the same energy as carefully breaking it to a family member that you think their partner is cheating on them

and when they trap cas in the holy oil and confront him dean also acts like a betrayed wife(gn)

which is such a stark contrast to how sam and bobby react to the betrayal (they’re mostly just like “eh this sucks” while dean is emotionally affected)

and even in the following episodes dean is way more affected by cas’s betrayal than sam and bobby are and dean is the one who argues the most with cas (honestly, this entire arc is literally that post that’s all “how do i know dean is in love with cas? bc sam isn’t”)

ok but the holy oil scene is truly like a soap opera (i mean... “where were you when i needed to hear it?” “i was there. where were you?” and dean looking back at cas one last time before running away)

this is their first big break-up and it takes them until the s7 finale to make up

also dean has no chill during that phone call lmao (he’s irritated when he finds out meg didn’t call them right then and there as soon as cas woke up and he’s immediately concerned when meg says cas is different, while sam’s just standing there holding his phone out to dean, being all ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ lmao)

dean: *pissed af at cas* also dean: *almost breaks his own neck at the speed with which he whips his head around at the mention of cas’s name and is desperate to know his location when cas calls meg after dean blasted him away with some other angels at the hospital*

8x07 - A Little Slice of Kevin

dean seeing cas everywhere

when you see your best dudebro outside the window in the middle of a storm but when you get up he’s gone and you feel like crap because you could’ve made it out of the war zone together and you just cannot fathom why he didn’t try harder and you just don’t understand why you’re feeling what you’re feeling (and judging by dean’s reaction to sam’s suggestion, clearly it’s not survivor’s guilt)

dean’s FACE when cas suddenly appears behind him in the bathroom

jacting joices: the infamous boner scene (yet another example of “how do I know dean is in love with cas? bc sam isn’t”)

jacting joices pt 2: sam and dean are talking case and then cas walks over to join the conversation and there is literally no reason for dean to check cas out (see here)

i was gonna put this as a special shoutout but then it turned out that i had more to say about this ep than i initially thought

it’s the way dean and cas keep gravitating towards each other in the first half of the episode. no seriously, they somehow keep ending up beside each other and you start wondering “what’s personal space” (friendly reminder that this is the ep right after they’re finally back together again after purgatory)

the married energy and the bickering

the “talk to me” scene where cas finally opens up to dean (but then interrupting moose strikes)

at the retirement home dean to sam and cas: “no flirting you two” then CUT to: dean and cas sitting at a table with an elderly lady who is staring at cas with heart eyes and... lady: “you are so pretty, charles” dean: *must look at young nurse’s butt immediately to distract myself from gay thoughts*

i’m sorry but the way he smiles so widely at cas at one point when they’re talking to that lady, like, she’s just called cas a bounder and dean’s amused about that but his amusement is not in any way malicious and his face is just so full of love when he looks at Cas, it’s embarrassing really (see here)

9x06 - Heaven Can't Wait

ok so i haven’t watched this ep in like 5 years so my memories on this aren’t as fresh as with the previous eps but! it’s the way that cas and dean act exactly like exes (who are still in love with each other) in this ep

2x13: Houses of the Holy

Providence, Rhode Island

A woman sits in the dark, smoking cigarettes, and watching TV.

The lights start to flicker and the television flickers back to an evangelical preaching. Her house starts shaking and her angel statues start falling. There’s suddenly a bright light and the woman watches it in awe.

Sam Winchester, decked out in white scrubs, greets his patient, Gloria. Sam wants to talk to her about what she saw that night. Gloria tells him that she stabbed a man in the heart “because it was God’s will.” Sam wants to know if God talked to her (too busy fucking with your life, Sam) but she says no and that an angel came to her. The angel told her that the man she stabbed was guilty. She needed no other proof to do it.

Sam later finds Dean enjoying some music and magic fingers.

Dean’s on lockdown because he robbed a bank in Milwaukee. They discuss the case. It really seems that Gloria is just a religious nutjob. And Sam would agree if she wasn’t the second person in town to have murdered someone because an angel told them to. “Supernatural maybe. But angels? I don't think so,” Dean insists. BLESS.

They then have a very fun conversation about how unicorns don’t exist (And Truly, BLESS Andrew Dabb. This dude took this one off joke and made it reality.) In any event, Dean firmly doesn’t believe in angels. (In a far off voice I hear: This is your problem, Dean. You have no faith.)

Once they stop arguing about angels, they decide to check out the victim, Carl’s place. They head to the basement to see what secrets he had hidden.

Sam finds scratch marks on the wall. On a closer inspection, he also finds a fingernail. They start digging up the dirt floor and find a skeleton.

In a lonely apartment, a man lays on his bed, drinking himself to oblivion. His lights start flickering and the room starts shaking. Suddenly there’s a bright light.

Cut to the man, Zach, walking to another house and stabbing a dude right in the gut.

Dean’s listening to the police scanner when Sam walks back to the motel room with food. He also has news that three people disappeared from the library where Carl worked. Dean has other news --the not-angel struck again.

They head out to the victim’s house and sneak inside. Sam hacks into the dude’s computer and Dean browses his catalog collection. Sam finds locked emails that turn out to be to an underage girl.

Dean is baffled by this spirit or demon they’re dealing with. Sam points out it’s like an avenging angel. Oh, Sam, if you only knew angels are dicks. Dean connects the two victims --they both go to the same church.

They meet with the priest posing as new parishioners. They discuss this whole angel crap but the priest is a believer (obv.) and talks openly with Sam about what angels are thought to be like. They look at a painting of Michael, the archangel, while the priest describes his belief that they’re “more loving, than wrathful.”

As they’re leaving, Dean notices a memorial on the steps of the church. It’s for Father Gregory, who was shot there two months prior in a carjacking. Dean thinks they’re dealing with a vengeful spirit, but Sam still humors the angel aspect of it all. Dean knows that Sam prays everyday (and I sit weeping in the corner, thinking of Purgatory.)

An angel statue begins to quake. Sam looks at it with curiosity, only to be overtaken by awe as bright light suffuses the room. He passes out.

“I saw an angel,” Sam gasps to his brother later. He reports that the angel spoke to him and told him to kill a man. The kicker is, the doomed guy on Sam’s hit list hasn’t actually committed any crime...yet. Dean’s unimpressed by Sam “Minority Report” Winchester’s insistence that he’s been chosen by the angels and God for this mission. I give Dean a high five, then methodically throw rocks through every single one of my windows as I think about the next thirteen seasons.

Their mom used to tell them every night that angels were watching over them. “She was wrong,” Dean says bitterly, “There’s no higher power. There’s no God. There’s just chaos. Violence. Random unpredictable evil that comes outta nowhere. Rips you to shreds. You want me to believe in this stuff? I’m gonna need to see some hard proof.” (I gallantly resist making a dirty joke about Castiel’s “hard proof.”)

Ahem. Anyway, Dean’s solid on the ghost theory. At the priest’s crypt they find wormwood growing - it’s a sign of a restless spirit. LOLLLL early seasons. Sam agrees to hold a seance.

They head out of a corner grocery a little while later, stocked with SpongeBob mats and candles for the seance, when Sam sees THE SIGN. Light glows around his mark - the guy he’s supposed to kill. While Ace of Base plays in my head, Sam makes a move to kill - er, stop - the ghost-tagged perp. Looking to forestall Sam’s murder-to-be, Dean tells Sam to run the seance and tails Sam’s suspect on his own. Dean watches the guy pick up a date, and then they’re off again.

Meanwhile, Sam’s obediently running the seance.

The priest appears in the crypt, horrified to see what looks like THE VERY DEVIL WORSHIP taking place. “I can explain,” Sam says before utterly failing to explain anything. And then light fills the room. The priest wonders if it’s an angel, but Sam sorrowfully notes that it’s only Father Gregory’s ghost.

The glowing angelic vision suddenly distills into a normal human figure. Father Gregory wonders why Sam isn’t killing his marked man. After all, he’s an angel and he commanded it! Sam glumly explains that NO, Father Gregory is just a normal ectoplasm-slinging ghost.

Dean loses the trail of the marked man, while Father Gregory explains that his kill orders are redemption for the killers and every one of his marks is guilty. “This is vengeance. This is wrong,” the older priest declares and I look VERY HARD at the rest of the show.

Meanwhile, the guy Dean was tailing parks his car in an abandoned alley and attempts to attack his date. JAB HIM IN THE EYEBALLS, LADY! Dean bashes his head in just in time and saves the date. The guy drives off and Dean follows quickly on his tail.

The old priest offers last rites to Father Gregory, who begins to flicker.

Sam watches in full puppy eyed mode as Father Gregory disappears, presumably to high five ghosts in Heaven.

Dean chases the Bad Guy through the streets until a truck pulls out in front of Bad Guy’s car. A metal pole bounces off the truck, pierces the windshield, and impales the guy right in the chest.

Later, Sam morosely packs his bag back at the motel.

For What the Fuck is this Motel Room Design Science:

Sam’s sad that there wasn’t an angel watching out for people on Earth. Dean pulls out his flask, takes a big swig, and promises to watch out for Sam. “You’re just one person,” Sam tells him. He’d hoped there was a higher power guiding their lives. One who’d grant Sam salvation.

“Knocking on Heaven’s Door” starts to play, while Dean confesses his current emotional state. He proposes that the insane way the Bad Guy died MIGHT have been God’s will. I kick Chuck right in the nuts.

Pairing: Castiel / Dean Winchester  Warnings: Swearing (Is this a warning?)  Word Count: 1087  A/N: This is something I wrote a while ago and planned to post as a later chapter of a fic I started, but due to work/life commitments I haven’t been able to post in that fic as much as I would have liked, so instead I am just posting it here today to celebrate the 2021 Valentine’s day Destiel wedding!!!If you enjoy I would LOVE to hear what you think!   Summary: It’s Valentine’s Day after the events of Season 15 except Cas came back and no one dies. Dean and Cas get married and everything is soft.

Dean snuggles into Castiel, his arm around Dean’s shoulders where they lie. Dean has no idea how he ended up as the little spoon, but he’s too happy to care. He reaches up to Castiel’s chest, intertwining their fingers. He revels in the moment, in the feeling of pure happiness. But it’s more than that. He knows happiness, he’s felt it before. It’s a rare feeling, sure, but what he’s feeling right now is beyond happiness. It’s something he doesn’t think he has ever felt before.

Peace.

He breathes slowly, deeply, closing his eyes and simply existing in Cas’s arms. He pulls Castiel’s hand to his lips and kisses the ring that is now sitting on the ex-angel’s finger. It’s cold against his lips, the silver standing out against the warmth of his husband’s skin.

“Mr Winchester,” Dean says with a smile.

Dean feels Castiel untangle his hand from his as he reaches to cup Dean’s jaw.

“Dean,” Cas says, his voice full of more warmth and love than Dean ever imagined he deserved. But he does. He deserves this. He deserves Cas. He leans towards his husband and their lips meet in the middle, soft and chaste but sure. A promise lingering between the two of them. A promise of tomorrow. A promise of every day after. They breathe each other in, eyes closed, content to exist in each other’s orbit.

“I don’t think I will ever be ready for this day to end,” Dean says as he pulls away. He leans back against his husband’s chest, hooking his left hand around Cas’s thigh. The arm around his shoulders gives him a squeeze, tight and reassuring.

“I know,” Cas says simply. “Today was the best day of your life.” Dean shoves him teasingly. “You know it’s true. Everyone you have ever loved, all in one room. Everyone happy, no pain…” He pauses. “Except when Crowley decided it would be a good idea to try karaoke.”

“Heh,” Dean laughed. “Yeah, no one needed to experience that, no matter what they have done to deserve it.” They smiled at the memory of that evening, a drunken ex-King of Hell swaying on stage to a terrible rendition of Air Supply’s All Out of Love.

After a few minutes Cas presses a soft kiss into Dean’s hair. “You will see them all again tomorrow, you know.” Dean nods. “And Jack has given them all the choice to stay.”

“Cosmic consequences be damned,” Dean quotes, “yeah, I remember.” He sighs. When they told their son that they would be getting married, Jack had told Cas and Dean that he wanted to do something for them, a gift, to make their wedding the best possible day in existence. He’d been away for a while, busy revamping Heaven. Changes were coming, they could all feel that.

Dean first understood the shift in their reality when Jack told them that he had offered all monsters on Earth the option to be “cured”. He had said that he didn’t want to force a cure on them, that it wouldn’t be fair to those who lived a good life. “Like your friend Garth,” he had told Dean, his face so earnest and hopeful.

Jack explained that Purgatory would cease to exist. The afterlife would not be the same. Any demons in Hell who wanted to start again as a human would be given the chance. Everyone else would simply exist no more.

And the same thing was going to happen to Heaven. Dean remembers the way it felt when Jack had told him that the souls in Heaven would simply drift away into nothing, the way his heart felt like someone had taken ahold of it and squeezed, never letting go.

But of course, Jack, kind and good as he is, had one surprise up his sleeve.

Everyone that Sam and Dean and Cas had ever loved, had ever cared for, had been brought back. “Cosmic consequences be damned,” Jack had said with a bright smile. “This is how it is meant to be.”

Dean had felt happier and lighter than he ever had before. Everyone. They were all coming back. Holding Charlie in his arms, sobbing into her hair as she stroked his back had been a weight lifted.

There had been a very strange reunion between Sam and Jess, especially when he introduced Eileen into the mix.

Even John Winchester had been brought back. Castiel punched him on the nose in principle, breaking one of his fingers. That had been a fun trip to the hospital.

“You will never be ready to say goodbye to any of them,” Cas says. “I understand.”

For the most part, everyone was excited to stay on Earth, give living another go. Not many people get a chance at a redo, and this would be the last time anyone would ever come back. But Jack didn’t want to force people to come back. He had explained it would be unfair, especially after he understood how painful and difficult it had been for Mary that first time.

Some people had decided not to stay. They would stay for the wedding, for one last hurrah, of course. But on February 15th they would be saying goodbye.

Forever.

“Hey, Cas?”

“Yes, Dean?”

“You know I love you, right?” He hates how insecure he sounds. Cas laughs, his voice low and quiet.

“I think the fact that we just got married in front of all of our loved ones, Dean, tells me how much you love me.”

“Okay,” he says. “Just checking.”

“I love you too,” Cas says, “more than anything.”

And Dean leans in again, kisses his husband with all the love and passion his body can muster. He wants to show Castiel just how much he is loved, cherished, valued. He wants to make his husband feel good, and happy, and pure.

Things quickly become heated between the two of them, and as Dean sinks into Cas, becoming enraptured and enveloped in their passion, he allows his mind to drift back to earlier that day, to the one moment he never wants to forget.

Dean stands in front of his husband to be, hands joined tight between them. The Roadhouse has somehow been rebuilt - Dean reminds himself to thank the kid for that later - everyone he has ever loved sat in one room. Dean never imagined that something like this would even be possible. But here he was, standing before the person he loved the most in the world, ready to tell the whole world.

“Castiel,” Claire says, because for some reason she insisted on officiating, “I believe you have prepared your own vows.” Cas nods to her, his face stoic and serious. Dean watches as he takes in a deep breath, preparing for the speech he has prepared.

“Everything I have done since the day I pulled you out of Hell has been done for you,” Cas begins. “Because of you. The good, the bad…” He trails off, a small smile growing on his face. He looks down, away from Dean, and lets out a small huff of laughter. “Yes I may have been misguided at times, made some bad choices.” His eyes reach Dean’s again. “But I did everything for you. All I ever wanted was a better world for you, Dean Winchester. I wanted to create a world that you would be proud of.” Dean squeezes Cas’s hands even tighter.

“Dean.” Cas says his name so simply. It’s just one word, one small syllable. But the way he says those four letters speaks so much love and affection into the world that a part of Dean wants to run from it. It has taken him a long time to accept that he does deserve the kind of love that Castiel, ex-angel of the lord, and love of his life is offering, but sometimes Dean doesn’t know how to truly comprehend that he is allowed this kind of happiness.

“I know for the longest time you have thought that I have only stayed by your side out of obligation,” Cas continues. “You feel, you worry, that I think I owe you something, and that is the reason why I stay. You taught me how to love. You taught me how to care, how to be human.

“I know you still sometimes think that I stick around because it’s convenient. But every day, every moment of my life, it is an honour to be able to exist in your orbit. Knowing you has been the biggest pleasure of my life. Simply standing here, getting to exist next to you… It would be more than enough to make me happy until the end of time. But getting to be with you, to hold your hand, to look into your eyes, to exist with you, that is more than I could have ever dreamed.”

Cas is well into his speech now, and Dean definitely does not feel his through tightening, a tear forming in his eye. Definitely not.

“I knew a long time ago that I intended to spend the rest of my life loving you. I have told you before that I learned to love everyone, the whole world, Sam, Jack, our family, because of you. But my love for you… That’s something I will never be able to quantify. It’s not only a part of me, but it has made me who I am. And I am so grateful that you have given that to me.”

Dean can feel his heart beating now, harder than it has ever beat before.

“I want to spend the rest of my life loving you, Dean Winchester. If you’ll have me, I want to do it by your side, holding your hand as we walk Miracle, kissing you good morning despite your awful morning breath,” - that earns a chuckle from their audience- “pretending I like Led Zeppelin more than I actually do,” -and that earns a protested “Hey!” from Dean, a chuckle from Sam, and an understanding nod from Jack- “practicing my baking skills until I make the perfect pie… all of it. I want all of it with you.”

“You are not only the love of my life, Dean. You are my life. My love, my joy, I would never have understood any of it if not for you. If you will have me, I will spend every day in the rest of my existence thanking you.”

And then Castiel turns back to Claire, giving her a small nod to indicate that he is finished. Everyone is quiet. Everything is still. No one moves.

Claire clears her throat and turns to Dean.

“Well, shit Cas,” Dean says finally, a laugh escaping as a single tear manages to escape, “how the fuck am I supposed to follow that?”

Everyone laughs. And everything is perfect.

It’s about time we spoke

Howdy fellow Supernatural tin hatters, it’s about time I put my foot in the ring. After re-watching season 8 there are a lot of things that I feel need addressed, many of which, if I’m honest, already have been. Let’s dive head first.

Dean Winchester vs The World:

What I mean by this is that everyone who he considers a loved one, he blames for their mistakes and ignores their intentions. Every time. Most notably is the way Dean treats Castiel since season 6 (the souless Sam season). Dean blamed Castiel for not fully bringing Sam back. There was no gratitude for risking his life or going head over heels once again (”always happy to bleed for the Winchesters” quote from season 7 comes to mind) to save Sam. He frankly treats Cas like shit about it to the point Cas goes behind his back to work with Crowley trying to fix a different mistake.

Dean still loves Cas( be it as family or what have you, that is a different tinhatted rant I have planned.) and he defends his honor as Sam and Bobby begin to doubt him. When he finds out that Cas is working with Crowley, that’s a fresh layer of betrayal. Great the whole summary thing is out of the way, now for the meat and potatoes.

Castiel would not have “betrayed” Dean if he wasn’t being a bitch baby. In the episode when Cas is explaining himself presumably to the viewers, maybe to God, we see and are told that he thought about going to Dean for help and guidance many times. Cue the Dean raking leaves scene, where Cas can’t bring himself to ask Dean for help. Crowley shows up instead. Had Cas been able to go to his (usually only) friend and confidant for advice or comfort, he would not have gone to Crowley for a sense of rightness and usefulness. But if Castiel falters even a bit on Dean’s front, he’s out.

This comes back again past Purgatory, past the leviathans, and all the “You always fuck up you’re a constant mistake ridden half angel” fits Dean throws his way, in season 8. That would be getting ahead of myself, so we will talk about the in between: crazy!Cas.

Here we see the affect of life and freewill on Castiel. Lucifer doesn’t haunt Cas’ mind like it did Sam, but rather the crazy leaves Cas to his own emotions. He is laden with guilt and a desire for peace. No conflict, no decisions, no bickering. He has been broken down every time he tries to right his own wrongs, but his intensions are always pure and good. He only wants to help others and protect humanity(in this case meaning actual human kind rather than subtextually, Dean Winchester). Were Dean to help him out when he asked for it or forgiven him anywhere down the road rather than dig into him for whatever part of Castiel’s plan faltered, this sense of guilt would not be nearly as loaded up as it is. Castiel has been fighting a war for and against heaven for years entirely on his own because Dean demands him to “take a number”. It’s a one way street. Sam needs help, Dean asks, the brothers get it. Cas needs help? It’s somewhere around 50/50 to 20/80 depending on the season on whether or not he gets it.

Now back to season 8. Towards the end of the season, Dean has Castiel completely benched and doesn’t even want him to come with him and Sam simply because he took the angel tablet rather than giving it to Dean. For what? Not trusting him. The issue is, trust does not seem to be a necessary thing for their relationship, as Dean actively refuses to give Castiel the benefit of a doubt numerous times. This rejections is what pushes Cas to be so desperate to close up heaven’s gates so he can “fix his home”. He has broken so many things, hurt so many people, killed so many of his kind. He just wants to fix something, to undo any of his wrongs, to do better. If everything he tries to do is seen as a failure by even his closest friends, can he really be blamed for his hasty attempts to jump through hoops and fix whatever he can. Working with Crowley, with Metaton(season 8), it all stems from wanting one thing, forgiveness.

The next important thing to note is the reason this section is not Dean vs Castiel but rather Dean vs the world. It’s an exaggeration but, he does not just do this all or nothing love hate with Castiel. He doesn’t seem to realize it, but he does it to Sam to.

In Season 8 episode 23 Sam has a quote that really puts this into perspective; “You think I screw up everything I try, I need a chaperone remember...What my greatest sin was... was how many times I've let you down I cant do that again. What happens when you decide I cant be trusted again? Who will you turn to next time? Another angel, another vampire?”

Even if Dean does not yell at Sam with the same hurtful language has he does Castiel when he makes mistakes, Sam has been with him his entire life. He knows when Dean thinks he’s fucked up. And he internalizes it. Sam lives in fear of the next time big brother Dean decides he is on the wrong side of a debate and that rejection kicks in. It’s the first part, “everything I try” that plays into this. Not everything I do, every thing I plan, it’s everything I try. So this means “every time I fail it’s a toss up whether or not you’ll accept me through it”. Dean’s love is permanent, but not unconditional. He can give it or withdrawal it at a moment’s notice. Dean cannot be alone, we see that in Season 8 as well as season 5-6 when Dean visits Kevin or works with Castiel respectfully. So when he’s in the middle of giving Sammy the cold shoulder for messing up, he finds someone else to tag along until he can forgive his little brother. Sam clearly caught onto the pattern as he references it here.

Getting real #deep:

It’s dramatic, but I still feel the need to give Dean some slack. Well, not really, but an explanation is more useful than an excuse when it comes to negative behavior. Why is Dean so hot (and cold) with those he cares about most? It always goes back to ol’ papa Winchester, John. If we think about how Dean was raised and treated from a young age forwards, a pattern is there. He was a good son, a good soldier unless he made a mistake. Any slip up, regardless of intention, was just a fuck up. You go out to get more supplies because I’m a couple weeks late? Doesn’t matter why you left your brother unguarded, for example. Dean takes over a lot of his father’s personality when it comes to emotions specifically ( opinions, preferences, expression ect), so it makes sense he would use his father’s example to handle forgiveness too. Which is to say, he doesn’t let out much. Unlike John, however, Dean actually his a softy, so he always comes around eventually, but it still has a long lasting affect on his loved ones regardless. Just because he gets over it and takes them back in with loyal, over protective arms, doesn’t mean they feel any better about the judgement and rejection he already gave out.

"What, you really haven't heard of us? What kind of angel are you, we're- we're the freaking Winchesters."

In my last post, I looked at how I felt Castiel embodied the energy of the tarot card the Fool, card #0. Today I want to continue the tarot conversation by looking at the next card in line, the Magician. There are a lot of characters who fit this archetype, including Rowena, Lucifer, maybe even Gabriel or Jack. But for me, the real Magician is Sam.

I mentioned the Magician comes right after the Fool, our official card #1. Some people see the major arcana as a journey the Fool takes, taking different roles as the journey progresses, and some people see the figures that follow the Fool as characters that he encounters. Regardless, the Magician represents the same things, especially in relation to the Fool. Where the Fool indicates potential, faith, and naivety, the Magician indicates intention and direction.

The card is usually depicted with a figure pointing one finger to the heavens and one to the earth, a table laid out with each of the four suits (or elements). The figure holds a magician’s wand, and bears an infinity symbol above their head. The imagery suggests access to resources and the infinite possibility for combining and using them. There’s a sense of manifestation, action, and willpower, but there’s no moral imperative for what kind of action is taken. This is why Bakara Wintner talks about the Magician as someone who "toes the line between the true miracle-worker and the trickster."

Sam has this resourcefulness. How many times has Sam tried something in the moment, based on previous knowledge and experience, and had it work out. Directing Dean to park on the hallowed ground of a fallen church in “Route 666.″ Painting their faces in blood to mask that they’re alive when Samhain is raised in “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Sam Winchester.” His impulsive—but successful—reverse-exorcism in “What’s Up, Tiger Mommy.”

I think one of the key aspects of Sam’s resourcefulness is his confidence. He believes in the power of past experience to inform the present, and he trusts in his instincts. This is also part of being a Magician. I love how Melissa Cynova talks about the power of the Magician in a reading, how the card “represents self-love, self-awareness, and confidence. It's one thing to know for certain that you're going to do something. It's something altogether different to know for certain that you're going to succeed.” When I brought this up with Katharine, she brought up Sam’s response to Alistair in the final act of “On the Head of a Pin” when Sam cockily dismisses Alistair’s comment about Sam sending him back to Hell. “I’m stronger than that now,” Sam says with a smile. “Now I can kill.” And he does.

Confidence, of course, doesn’t have to mean cockiness or arrogance. It doesn’t have to mean domination. And for Sam, his confidence is usually of a much softer sort. Katharine, our resident Sam-Whisperer, reminded me of this when she also brought up Sam’s words in “It’s a Terrible Life” regarding his life and hunting. "All I know is, I got this feeling in my gut. And I know—I know that deep down, you gotta be feeling it too. We're supposed to be something else." Sam’s sense of self is unshakeable, and his confidence in his own instincts in this moment is powerful.

Then we have the quote I used to open this post. I was sort of iffy on using it—it falls a little back into that arrogant category that demon-blood-bender Sam really lives in. But the more I think about Sam stating what, in all honesty, I’m shocked neither Winchester says more often, the more I like it. Because Sam asking Metatron in “The Great Escapist” incredulously if he really hasn’t heard of them gets at the inherent Magician-ness of both Winchesters pretty neatly. We’ve stopped the Apocalypse, Sam seems to be saying. Defeated the Mother of All Evil, saved the world from Leviathans, survived Purgatory and Hell! What haven’t the brothers achieved? What magic haven’t they worked to still be standing after the horrors that they’ve faced? Sam has a right to wonder why the scribe of God has somehow missed the memo on God’s most chosen of children.

Thinking of confidence and sense of self also makes me think about Benebell Wen’s take on the Magician. “To wield the intensity of concentration needed for omnipotent power, one must be strong in both spirituality and character,” she writes. “Thus, the Magician card often appears in spreads for those who are strong in spirituality and character. It is the card of individuality.” “Strong in both spirituality and character” alongside “the card of individuality” really calls Sam to my mind. Sam’s faith in those early seasons, his willingness to believe God may be talking to him even in season 11 after God has proven time and time again to be largely uninvested. Sam wanting to be a lawyer, wanting to help people. Taking charge and guiding the folks of Apocalypse World. Sam forging his own way after loss, after grief, after anguish. That is all evidence of his strength in spirit. That is strength of character. Sam maintains up until the final episodes of the final season that he and Dean’s righteous positions will find purchase, even when they are challenging God himself. Of the two brothers, Sam is ever the optimist, always willing to find a way to make a situation work. He will use what resources he has, what willpower he can still muster, and he will make something work or die trying. He’s both trickster, and miracle-worker, and his heart is always in the right place.

I want to close out this post by thinking of the Magician and Sam one final way, and that’s as a “vessel,” as Rachel Pollack sees the Magician.

He is not casting spells or conjuring demons. He simply stands with one hand raised to heaven and the other pointed to the green earth. He is a lightning rod. By opening himself up to the spirit he draws it down into himself, and then that downward hand, like a lightning rod buried in the ground, runs the energy into the earth. Into reality.

She’s talking about the imagery of the card, and informing those of us who read tarot that, as the Magician is a conduit for spirit, so too are tarot readers. Through use of these tools, we become conduits to whatever is sending us the messages. This can be contested, of course, and isn’t a universal belief re: tarot. But it is, quite literally, the truth when it comes to Sam*.

Sam is Lucifer’s vessel; he is a literal conduit or channel for divine intervention. He has the potential within him for great feats of power and violence, and with his past brushes with demon blood, this is a potential he is hyper-aware of and anxious about. Sam’s role as “lightning rod,” so to speak, is a lot of what drives his cultivation of spirit and character. Sam wants to do good, and wants to believe he is good, and he makes choices as the series goes on to live up to those desires. Sam’s worries about himself are aligned with the reversed energies of this card, such as the potential for manipulation, the misallocation of resources, and a lack of empathy. Essentially, the Sam we meet when he is soulless.

Luckily for us and the others on the show, Sam largely lives in the role of the Magician defined by Melissa Cynova and Benebell Wen. He’s driven to do good and help people, putting his resourcefulness to work in the best possible way, the lore as his tools of his metaphysical trade. And, of course, by the close of the show, he’s also a bonafide witch, a literal magician on top of his Magician-like qualities. And we always love to see it.

*Also Sam is literally a witch. So. Jot that down.
