Best of 2023 Movies #3: The Super Mario Bros. Movie
In 2019 video game movies began their hot streak with Detective Pikachu.
Followed by Sonic and its sequel.
With another video game adaptation that will be mentioned later we now have to take a look at Nintendos Iconic Figurehead.
And what unexpected fun this ended up being and critics hated.
Tumblr media
Brooklyn natives Mario and Luigi have started their own plumbing service, to the ire of their parents and relatives.
When opportunity knocks to get more notice, the duo would be sucked down a warp pipe and become separated.
Mario landing in the Mushroom Kingdom, land of the Toads and lead by Peach.
Tumblr media
While Luigi would end up in the domain of Bowser, koopa shell icon and a master of unexpected talents and unrealistic crushes (which will also be explored later.)
Tumblr media
Mario, Peach and the main Captain Toad set off to rescue Luigi all the while opening up as Peach Says “A Whole Universe”
One brings in Mario’s origin in the form of the Kongs, lead by Crankey and his son DK.
Tumblr media
Going beyond what the first game based movie was, this kept things to the point where it was very simple in the end.
As Mario usually goes after Peach, switching this to Luigi elevated the stakes and kept things more contained.
Tumblr media
Chris Pratt, was a mixed bag as Mario but the other 4 major players of Jack Black as Bowser, Charlie Day as Luigi, Keegan Michael Key as Toad and Anya Taylor Joy giving us a new side of Peach more than made up for it.
If anything, the Kongs were not needed, despite Seth Rogen and Fred Armisen giving it their best.
Though the same thing can be said about that Luma.
Still though first walkthrough and this amazingly works.
Tumblr media
While unlike its predecessor actually sets up a sequel and expansion well.
A Galaxy worth of adventures and stunt casting for a certain mother of the stars awaits.
Tumblr media
SUM 22: One of two video game peaks came from the brothers, the princess, the koopa, the toad and the troopers with this delight.

But Peter Parker (no not that one, the other — yeah that guy) does actually have an OnlyAdmirer’s account though.
He doesn’t remember exactly when he started it — sometime after losing the job at the pizza place and before picking up the tutoring hours; he remembered he was short for one of Aunt May’s prescriptions that month, but isn’t sure anymore which one it was. Sometime during college.
Low ebb on crime that week, which meant he wasn’t making much from the Bugle, but he did have some extra time, enough to take a deep breathand set up the encyptions on his account (he should probably go this hard for all his spiderman stuff too, but eh, it had been fine so far).
He wears a mask (no not that one, though he did consider it because, you know, it would be freaking hilarious).
He pulls...a grand, whopping total of.... $100 a month. Wahoo.
Ok, maybe a little more on average; and sometimes its up to $200! It’s just worth the fees and the time, and after a while he has to admit it’s less stressful than any of his other gigs.
At first he’s paranoid about someone finding out, both in his personal life and his superheroics (he has, like, 10 self righteous rants prepared about the moral neutrality, nay the moral Good of sex work).
(He’s a little disappointed that it never comes up.} Eventually he doesn't think about it, especially not on patrol, not any more than he thinks about the taco shop, or the GrubHob gig, or any of the bazillion odd jobs that come with working class heroics. Eventually he doesn’t think not to mention it, and the set-up was perfect for him to — ok— sue him, he might have been trying to sound cool in front of an X-Man who was laughing at his jokes— He, uh. May have forgotten. How much X-Men gossip. It’s not like it would have been a big deal had the press event not happened two days later, and— why do other people always get a laugh when they repeat his jokes anyway!
Plus! He was on maybe two hours sleep when the tabloid asked him point blank and for a moment he was so wrapped in the euphoria of a non-Bugle rag interviewing him, and also not yelling at him for damages or anything serious, that he forgot he lived in a world where sex-work was stigmatized so— yeah. Good news! His secret identities are still fine, no-one’s even figured out which OnlyAccount is his. Bad news! Because his secret identity’s still intact, and noone’s figured out which twink is spiderpowered, he’s still only going to make $134 this month, which is barely more than minimum wage when you include prep time.
Other good news! Most fun he’s ever had explaining something from the internet to Jonah.

I am. Quaking over Crowley and Hanna cause AUGH they're so adorable. Getting up into antics! What do you think some of their adventures would be? Chaos at the nursery garden stores? Lurking in woods to find creatures? Sorry I just really wanna know.
Tumblr media
"Can we get a 'wahoo'?"
First off thank you for the perfect reason to post this sketch!
I cannot even begin to imagine the terrors they rain on the general public tbh. Between Crowley still feeling jilted and Hanna feeling free for the first time, the limit is really their imaginations (of which they both posses quite a fair bit).
In fairness since this little au I'm simmering takes place pretty soon after the end of s2, they probably don't do a lot of REALLY outlandish stuff for a while. They'll stay local, probably spend time with Nina and Maggie and probably end up meeting the Them at some point. Crowley would also probably want to try and keep inconspicuous (hah) with heaven and hell looming over their heads and now with a squishy thing to protect. I LOVE the garden center chaos idea btw, shoutout anon, and Crowley's little pseudo Eden is definitely going to rapidly expand into a vibrant and terrified indoor oasis (skylights included). Shops in general are going to have to watch their backs (Crowley has a reason to go into many of them quite frequently now, and without his celestial counterpart to keep him from goofing off too much). Hanna is a big fan of the classic "run down the aisles of a toy store and rapidly push every single button you find" method of spreading foment.
Since Hanna hasn't had an opportunity to see/experience most of the world, I imagine they spend a LOT of time popping through museums/zoos/aquariums/etc. Crowley pointing out things he caused, things an... old friend caused, things that actually happened way differently but got recorded wrong. Hanna dragging her dad around and both of them getting WAY too into reading the information plaques for all the animals. Then seeing which animals freak tf out if her dad flashes his eyes. (The giftshops get terrorized if there arent enough fungus-themed objects, although there is always miraculously at least one). They probably break into a lot/if not most of the exhibits after hours to take selfies for Crowley's rapidly growing photo album. Hanna sits at the shark touch tank and loudly proclaims how smooth they are. And since im a sucker for I-Want-To-Share-The-Stars Crowley, they probably pop over to an observatory or break into idk, where they keep the telescope on the Canary Islands or something. And he'll tell her what he remembers about the Creation and what it feels like to hold a new star in your hand. Hanna will curl up against Crowley's chest and get lost in his voice and the distant glitter of a world her dad designed. They probably also commit crimes. Not major crimes, mind you, although that's due more to Crowley's occasional sense of "as a parent i probably shouldn't let you" than any unwillingness on Hanna's part. But she'll definitely help him move signs or infiltrate office buildings and other assorted sabotages. She 100% gets her own little version of the Fuck Shit Up Jacket, and whether he likes it or not the Bentley has decided Hanna gets to pick the getaway music.
It doesn't really count as demonic but Crowley DOES keep a bag of spare change and googly eyes for Hanna to glue to things at will while they're out.
But tbh i imagine the most trouble she gets into is if she's left alone with Muriel. Evidently Hanna has her father's talent for tempting angels into misbehaving or at least into not noticing that they are, in fact, misbehaving in the human sense. Crowley usually feels almost bad for the baby angel but, needs must. and sometimes he needs a babysitter. The rule is SUPPOSED to be that if Hanna is with Muriel, they DO. NOT. LEAVE. the bookshop (they always leave the bookshop).
At one point she meets a boy named Kian at a pub called the New Inn. Crowley very desperately wants her to not want to spend time with Kian for reasons he refuses to explain 💕
At any rate if anyone ever wants to write or draw anything with Hanna they're more than welcome to and also I'll probably cry a lot so Cheers! Thank you for the ask (apologies for my signature long-winded answer)!

2023 Art Roundup
Tumblr media Tumblr media
JAN - FEB - MAR - APR - MAY - JUN - JUL - AUG - SEP - OCT - NOV - DEC
(These aren’t entirely indicative of when I posted them, but when I actually finished them.)
These are some of my biggest/favorite projects through each month!
Piece details + Mod-posting below!
JAN - Asteía ; This was one of my first projects of the year that dealt with lighting, and additionally light from multiple sources! I also remember experimenting with backgrounds and how to make a character pop against a semi-detailed background without making them get lost in the piece.
FEB - Mora and Ego ; This was a good project on figuring out how to fill empty space while still keeping the atmosphere of a piece. It was also good perspective practice!
MAR - Sanguine and Ego ; Though I’m no longer too happy with the proportions or lighting of this piece, I still remember having a blast with it. Hearing feedback about them holding hands and Sanguine’s ear getting squished are very fun memories for me.
APR - Miraak and Ego ; This might be my favorite project of the whole year! Though I know I can do backgrounds better now, I remember being pretty confident and happy during the whole process! I think the motion/lighting/effects all came out very well :] ALSO it was the first piece I did with expressive masks for Miraak and Ego! Wahoo!
MAY - Mora and Ego (again) ; Though the last one was my personal favorite, I heard from a couple of friends that THIS was their favorite. Though a pain in the ASS to do, I’m especially happy with all the texture effects. This was also me experimenting with Mora’s design!
JUN - Erandur ; Not a particularly complicated/difficult piece, but one that was simply pure fun. Had a blast with lighting effects and atmosphere. It was also a good break from the family trip I was taking at the same time ,:]
JUL - Dagon ; Specifically his revamp! This was my first successful attempt at a (very) muscular body type that I liked! In fact, over the course of the year I’ve been pretty proud of my progress of expanding on body types. This one especially, though, was just very fun!
AUG - Iren and Rakell ; My first dive into a colored + shaded animatic (animation? It’s awful choppy lol)! FAR from perfect, but I was (and still am) so happy with the outcome. I particularly remember enjoying figuring out lines of movement and sound effects for the video.
SEP - Sanguine ; My first (and still only, though hopefully not for long) attempt at making Sanguine intimidating. I think this one is going in the right direction! As far as effects go, I actually had a very tough time with things because of a few layer-merging mishaps, but the final product was well-received!
OCT - The Warden ; After many-a night on Minecraft with friends, I realized just how much I loved the warden, and HAD to draw them. Redesigning characters is one of my absolute favorite things to do, especially when taking minimal details and expanding on them! They were super fun all around.
NOV - Miraak, Serana, Ego, and Ancano ; I’d been meaning to draw the siblings being siblings for a while now, but putting them all on one canvas was more than a little intimidating. I was so happy to have it done, though, and I kinda love seeing their colors clash together.
DEC - Sanguine (again) ; After not drawing him for so long, it was a blast doing so. The moment I was back home for winter break, I was ECSTATIC to get to work on this piece. #1 blorbo

This year has been an absolute ride.
I became a mod and then co-owner of the TES server that got me into making TDI and have made some really tight friendships over there (genuinely, anyone reading this who is/was in the cult server, I’m so damn happy to know you).
I’ve done some intense progress on TDI, and even though I didn’t QUITE accomplish my New Years Resolution of posting Ch. 1 this year, hopefully you can understand the drawbacks considering I am… //checks notes/// 70+ chapters in and still going.
I’m in college! Have been for a hot second now, but I’ve been working towards a ministry degree, and have future plans of getting a PhD after my bachelor’s so I can teach at a college level! I don’t think I talk a lot about my irl happenings, but hopefully that gives you an idea of why I might be a liiittle busy when it comes to writing. Ministry is an unforgiving degree when it comes to papers and meetings.
As earlier mentioned, I’ve learned how to do different body types, and am trying to find a good balance between shape language and inclusivity when it comes to bodies! I am… still struggling with feminine anatomy! Admittedly! But I’m willing to keep trying ,:]
And, overall, I (certainly hope I have) improved on my art. I have a much better sense of face shapes, line weights, and consistent details than I did at the beginning of the year. Always learning, but always improving, too!
I hope your year has gone well! Thank you so very much for checking out my blog. Tumblr has been a wonderful thing to get into and has led me to a lot of wonderful people. See you in the new year!

The Lumity Kiss is Bad
Which is really weird when the actual, physical kiss is pretty much textbook perfect. However, this isn't a quick kiss or a throwaway one. It's the BIG kiss in a romantic subplot. The second half of the resolution we got in Knock Knock Knocking with the confession and the show frames it that way. As such... The kiss is more than just the kiss and it's every element around the physical action that ruins it, making even the textbook nature of it somehow flawed.
Let's start with the positive though. Now I've actually said I don't like how the kiss is animated and I do kind of stick to that. If you go to the 57 mark of this clip of the kiss, you can literally watch as Amity's face slides back to being on model.
youtube
And kind of like a lot of moments in the show with big budget animation, that's not a HUGE issue but it is deciding that frame rate and smoothness is king for good animation without considering how jarring it is to watch in the show and if it actually fits within the style of the show. I find TOH fights WAY more enjoyable to watch when isolated by themselves because of this because they aren't in an uncanny valley where they feel like a well produced fan animation than something official and I do still hold to that with the kiss itself. I just wish I could better describe why.
BUT! I said I had a positive to talk about and I do. For three seconds, the scene is just right. Luz says the date will be perfect before then Amity, looking at Luz, the person who the mere thought of was comforting her and who she's been worried about for a week, decides to go in and kiss her. Her hands are gentle as they take Luz's face and she leans in. Luz is shocked that this is happening but then quickly gives into the bliss and holds Amity's hand in her own. It is sweet, quick but incredibly impactful. It is a textbook example of how to do a kiss that one half of the pair didn't see coming and the couple are meant to be deeply in love. It's nothing new but doing the classic spot on is never a bad thing.
Those three seconds die the second Luz says, "Crikey," let alone the fact that it's in an Australian accent. And don't get me wrong: You do not have to make a kiss like this sappy. I Was A Teenage Exocolonist has a romance route with a very clinical, scientific person and when you two get together, she snarks at you if you ask what next. That I should know her well enough to know she has a logical decision deduced from what is correct for the situation.
"So are you going to kiss me or am I going to kiss you?"
Great. Amazing. Silly and not taking itself too seriously but above all else IN. CHARACTER.
I'm sorry to break it to you all but Luz is NOWHERE NEAR "Lol, random" enough for this. Hell, in both this scene and Looking Glass Ruins, the writers point out how Amity is driven to act on emotion and on what her brain pulls her towards more than Luz, especially on this topic. It's why Amity is ALWAYS the one to do the firsts in their relationship. Meanwhile, Luz's only times where she blurts out something random is "Snorses" which had a clear correlation to what was happening and "You damn rat!" which also was explicitly tied to the stimuli causing it.
What stimuli here makes her go "Crikey" and turn FUCKING AUSTRALIAN!? The only reasonable excuse I could even think of is to say she's a huge Crocodile Dundee fan but Luz was born theoretically somewhere around 2006, literally TWENTY YEARS after that movie came out and I don't feel like Camila would push something like that for her to watch or really fits in with most of what else Luz seems to enjoy.
Fucking BAZINGA would have been more in character because at least nerds still mock Big Bang Theory. Other options for a random word or reference would have been "Excelsior!" or "Wahoo!" as she jumps into the air like the hyperactive gremlin she's supposed to be.
Neither one would work though in general because the tone and framing of the scene isn't right for a joke, let alone this sort of joke. Part of what makes the kiss feel so justified in this moment is the setup... Though only on Amity's side. I'll get to the problems with Luz's setup for the kiss in a bit.
Amity has thought Luz might be dead for a week. She hasn't heard back from her, she's scared, distressed and strung out. She wants things to go back to simpler times like in Season 1 when things weren't so scary. She's emotional and is actively using the thought of Luz as a way to comfort herself. Then, out of nowhere, Luz comes in, promising romance, better times and safety, all while proving she herself is safe.
It is perfect setup in a story like this for the first kiss. Honestly, they could have gone one step farther and mentioned that they haven't even had a big kiss but they went with the missing out on the date element, which works just as well. It's nothing new but it's correct. It's good. However... It's also genuinely serious. Like this is effectively Amity laying out exactly why she likes Luz. The strength she gets from Luz. Why this relationship is important to her. It is great setup for an "I love you," or a first kiss.
It is a REALLY bad setup for a joke. However... as bad Luz's joke is... Amity's is actually worse.
"I can't believe I just did that!"
Yeah and I can't believe that in this moment that should show how far Luz and Amity have come as a couple, the strength and joy they've gained after being a couple for half a season, you're literally reacting the EXACT same way as you did when you kissed her on the cheek back in Looking Glass Ruins. It doesn't matter that you have nicknames now. That you two keep twirling each other about. Have had deep conversations about Luz's pain while Luz ignored yours. *eye twitch at Reaching Out* And it doesn't matter that in this moment, you have EVERY justification to be confident in this choice. To simply happy and overcome with emotion that your partner is simply ALIVE.
Her response should have been, "I'm so happy to see you," not literally going back an entire half a season for a cheap, repeat gag.
To be fair though, while this entire scene, from the moment it cuts to Amity talking to Emira and Edric, is obviously paying reverence to how big of a deal this is and trying to make the kiss be correct... The jokes are in keeping with how quite literally the rest of the episode treats Lumity. Remember, this episode starts with Luz claiming she'd like to pull a romantic rescue but deciding to opt out because despite having literally nothing to do with the plan, and likely being detrimental to how stealthy they need to be because fewer numbers are better here, she would rather be prepared to help Eda and King than actually break her girlfriend out from being grounded by the EC. This is despite, in Luz's own words, "You know me. I'll always choose the chaotic option." That... Isn't a good starting point.
Then the rescue is comically easy and Luz doesn't actually do any of it. It's all Gus, Willow and Hunter. Luz just gets to take the credit and get the big hero kiss, which this ABSOLUTELY IS. Amity was a damsel in distress for Luz to save, complete with a kiss for doing so. That's also without getting into how pathetically easy the save is. Like Willow doesn't even have to try to bury one dude and an abomaton ALIVE under ground. Frankly, I'm amazed that guard is still alive.
It's just a lot of stuff way too easy to be leading into what is the final payoff for your romantic subplot, let alone one that has taken up a THIRD of your story so far.
The rest of the episode isn't any better though. This should be an episode about Lumity. It starts with talking about Amity in trouble. Then it saves Amity and does the big, climactic kiss... But we haven't gotten Luz's side of the relationship yet, have we? We haven't gotten her speech like we did Amity's. We haven't gotten anything to show her deeper care for Amity and while Amity is talking about Luz's quirks and her kindness and the strength she gets from her, Knock Knock Knocking is really the closest we've gotten with "Awesome and pretty" which is vague and shallow. This is your chance to fix that.
There's even a perfect moment. Odalia threatens their relationship and says Luz isn't worthy. Have Luz agree... But then say it doesn't matter what her or Odalia think. That she is lucky to have someone as smart, dedicated, and passionate while having a sweet center that despite all her fears, anytime she's with Amity, she knows Amity is going to give her the chances she needs. Is going to understand what she's trying to say instead of looking at how weird she is and rejecting her. Take ten, twenty seconds to do that... While in the background, we can see Gus obviously thinking about something, glance at Luz, and then start working on a spell circle.
The shield comes down, get the dramatic reveal of Alador and then cut back to where Hunter is holding Amity's hand. Same effect as the show but allow Gus to make the plan of his own volition because he wants to protect his bro and this was the best he could think of. He thought Luz would be more capable of defending herself due to glyphs and that Belos was less likely to kill her than Hunter. Also, it was in a panic and the best he could think of.
INSTEAD, we get Luz ignoring Amity's problems with her parents for the THIRD FUCKING TIME and focusing on the white boy in the cast instead. In fact, I don't think Lumity talk to each other ONCE after the kiss scene. The focus is too much on the plot and Amity's angst and I could do an entire blog about how little Luz actually engages with Amity's character arc and plot elements. It makes it real rough analyzing old episodes for Amity's arc when you realize how much Amity jumps in her arc without almost any input from Luz on elements that are suddenly gone.
And this would be OKAY... But it makes the kiss feel like... Well, honestly like a gag. We're at a point in the show after all where very little of it is trying to be funny. Even Gus and King are being taken seriously now and Amity will be a joke for most of S3, especially in Thanks to Them. Even her standing up to her mother is lightly mocked by Alador sounding like he's just saying sweet lies in telling Amity that she was close to breaking the barrier. It's WEIRD the treatment of it when it has consumed so much time and the framing of the actual moment is so serious.
And I want to be clear: I am happy they kissed. I am not against this because it's two girls or anything like that. I'd criticize this no matter the gender, race, etc. of any element here because it is just flatly bad romance writing. The only parts that function are either cut off at the knees or the one part that has the characters too silent to actually harm the moment.
And I think the last thing any of us wanted for Lumity was for it to be treated like a joke.

It's 3 am!! You know what that means!!! Delusional tang posting time let's gooo yippee!!!!!!
Said I'd dump S4 Tang thoughts here a week ago and then I just kinda. didn't. oopsies, but I can start now!!
S4 Spoilers below the cut, you have been warned!!!
AUTHOR'S NOTE OF SORTS AFTER WRITING THIS: WOW IS THIS LONG. I got a little too silly and put too many thoughts down at once oops, prepare to be reading for a good minute you have been warned (twice!!) aughdhsj
My thoughts are so disorganized rn prepare for a rollercoaster of whatever my brain spits out!!
First. Ep 4 intro.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Good to see that Tang still can never have a nice landing unlike everybody else
Tumblr media
THE CROCODILE??????? HELLOSNBD?!?
Tumblr media
MF GETS BODY SLAMMED?????
Tumblr media
THIS SCREAM????? He gets to scream for like, 2. SECONDS. BEFORE HE GETS?? DRAGGED RIGHT BACK INTO THE WATER????
ALL OF THE SCREAMINGSG??? THE BASS???? THE FUCKING GUITAR????????
I can't. I cannot. convey in words how incredibly funny this scene is to me. I can't sit through it and not laugh or start kicking my feet it's just THAT good. They had Z E R O business doing this to him, this scene had absolutely NO REASON to be THIS chaotic but they?? did it anyway????? jgkngm???? I love this show sm
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
He's so pretty in this specific lighting I need to draw him like this soon or I will explode wowowee
Tumblr media Tumblr media
HE DEFLATED. SO FAST.
That's such a funny reaction, no more energy just. Whatever. Eat me I guess I don't care just start cooking so pigsy can come back please. He is so funny
Tumblr media
weapon. just straight up bonk him into a demon like a plank of wood
Actually now that I think about it why? Did nobody untie him??? they found him and just left him like that?? Neither of them ever untied him if memory serves I'm pretty sure pigsy did it while he was cooking. ???

Tumblr media
THEY DID NOT HAVE TO CALL HIM OIT LIKE THAT DHDHJS PLEASE????? JAJJS The little sad noises he makes as he gets torn into, little guy behavior tbh
Tumblr media
"-stop gorging yourself on our rations!" "I'm sorry! It's just I'm stressed okay!?"
STRESS-EATER CONFIRMED!!!!!!!!! YOU AND ME BOTH BUDDY. No wonder he married a cook, wonder if in college everytime Tang was mega stressed about finals or a big deadline coming up (the latter could be true later when he's out of college and had a job too) if pigsy, assuming he had the time, would just make a meal for him. They probably wouldn't be able to spend much time together in that situation so making him something when he knows Tang is stressed seems like a realistic thing for Pigsy to do in order to subtly show he's there for support when need be. Tang pays that kindness forward by actually paying his tab for once coughs
Tumblr media
"HEY! I so to am perfect!" (S1)
Tumblr media
"hmmmm, if I wasn't so cool and relaxed all the time I'd be reeeeeally worried about the consequences of this" (S1)
Tumblr media
"I know my issue is my self confidence" (S4)
Tumblr media
(Can't find a way to make it a gif) Tang: so ""relaxed"" in his current situation that he is shaking hard enough to vibrate in place, coupled with the look of completely calm and collected and ""coolness"". (S4)
Does it ever drive you crazy just how fast the night chan- gets shot
ACTUALLY THo S4 fleshed him out as a character so much, especially when we compare him to how he started all the way back in S1. Beforehand in earlier seasons everything was mostly stable for him. Same places, same people, consistent comfort, it gave him some sense of security that could have made his "calm and relaxed" demeanor viable back then. But now that everythings been thrown up and ruined by powers out of Tang's control, his bubble of safety no longer stands. We begin to see it in season 3 with lady bone demon's attacks + macaque's continued interference. Tang seems a lot more on edge near the latter half of season 3 then he had been all of the rest of the show and there's definitely WAY more panic present as one bad thing after another unfolds, notably when he is quite literally moved to tears as he's forced to forge the samadhi fire. It does kind of consistently crop up during other prior conflicts too but much more mildly and on a more temporary scale. Now, seemingly not long after the lbd incident as mk evidently still hasn't pushed past lbd all that well, his entire framework of stability is practically smashed into pieces. He's stuck in a scroll, he loses track of all of his friends for a while, there is no comfortable safe space for him anymore(a book can probably only realistically tell you so much about a setting, probably not enough to evoke the same familiarity that his house or pigsy's shop does), he literally almost gets eaten, there's ANOTHER massively powerful divine being threatening the safety of his loved ones along with his own, and on top of it all he can't get his powers (which are evidently in DIRE need right now) to work half the time. He had built a dependency on the routine of mundane life beforehand and S4 completely shatters that routine and subsequent stability. It's no wonder why we begin to see him crack, it make sense why we're just now seeing the actual depths of his lack of confidence and his anxiety. This has always been a problem more likely than not, he was able to cope before, or at least hide it, but he can't now. His inability to use his powers properly inevitably worsens the problem. He needs to use his powers but he cant. He needs to be useful, he has to be, but he just can't no matter how long or how hard he tries. Every odd is against him, it's getting to him and it shows. I love how lmk doesn't try to hero-speech it's way out of every character's doubts. I love how they let him break down several times throughout season 4, I love how they let him show emotional weakness not as a plot obstacle that can be ✨✨completely overcome with the power of believing in yourself!! And friends!!! And flashy magic!!! Yayyyyy!!!✨✨ but as a fundamental part of Tang that he just has to work around and deal with it. They obviously can't get too in depth into it (and probably never will) because a. This is a kid show made by Lego, and b. Because he's, y'know, not the main character, but the attention they did bring to it is nice.
I have. Accidently written a paragraph. Oops. uhhhh tldr: They did a good job portraying Tang's internal struggles through S4 while not invalidating his character and behavior from previous seasons. When you kick the rug out from someone's feet and then throw them off a 400ft cliff into a pit full of spikes they're going to be at least a little bit terrified out of their mind and are probably going to understandably show weakness somewhere along the way, I'm glad Lego takes a moment to explore that with Tang at least a little bit.
OKAY!! MOVING ON!!! SORRY ABOUT THAT GHFJJ
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mentioned this earlier on twt but the death grip he maintains on his staff when he gets really scared is a nice touch. He has a history throughout all 4 seasons of latching onto objects or people when he's distressed, a small but fun character detail!

"ahh I'm sorry I'm just- I'm having a melt down and I have no idea what's going on and I just-!"
In line with what I ranted on about for an entire essay earlier- explicit mention of a meltdown! It's quick and short but the fact that they called it a meltdown at all is impressive, this is the first time I can remember a show calling one as such. A meltdown in response to a seeming extended lack of security and a disconnect between Tang and what's going on around him is realistic too, I think at least. The scene right after this when the gang (mostly sandy) does their best to bring Tang back down to earth for a moment was nice, they're such a supportive friend group I love this little found family
Tumblr media
DHDJJ???? THIS ENTIRE SCENE WAS GREAT BUT THIS ONE??? WHERE HE JUST GOES ZOOMING THROUGH THE AIR SCREAMMG?? IS HE OKAY?????? HSJH
I HAVE. HIT MY IMAGE LIMIT UMMMM.
I had more to say and I will probably say those later!! For now this is it, it is almost 6 am I should really go to bed augahh
Remember!!!!: live, laugh, tang lego monkie kid. GOODNIGHT!!

OMG ty adrey!!! i love any excuse to share my music!!!!
songs BE SHUFFLED‼️
1. With A Little Help From My Friends (Remastered 2009) by the Beatles :3
2. death bed (coffee for your head) by Powfu & beabadoobee
3. How To Never Stop Being Sad by dandelion hands
4. Sitting, Waiting, Wishing by Jack Johnson
5. Ocean Man by Ween
HOLY COW. WHAT A GENUINE SHUFFLE ALCBKSCN USUALLY SPOTIFY IS SO BAD AT SHUFFLING WHAT!!!!! I love all of these songs actually omg
This was not apart of the task but im using this as an excuse to talk about these songs below the cut:
1. Beatles songs fill me with such warmth. Hugs. My sister loved them sm and anything my sister loved, I loved. She was ten years older than me. I was raised on the Beatles. Plus they remind me of my beloved emma ( @love-songs-for-maria ) and her family/her mom. My second family being a Beatles household is so nice c: I Get By With A Little Help From My Friends :')
2. There was a time period where i could Not stop listening to this song. I started making art about it back then; this is absolutely reminding me to finish it omg. Also, this song actually /sampled/ beebadoobee's song "coffee," it's not just like a song they made together. So check out "coffee" for a song about healing that makes me CRY and also feel like I'm being HUGGED. Love u beebadoobee
3. Wow. What a classic. How To Never Stop Being Sad was my ULTIMATE cry song when I was like 13. I still think about some of lines (it reads more like spoken word/poetry with backdrop) more as How To *Stop* Being Sad, yknow? Motivational. Like "Become a background character to your own motion picture" -> Be the main character in your life. Take up space. EXIST. ♡
4. The album this comes from, "In Between Dreams," sounds like childhood. Like sitting on the lil fold down square seats in the back of my dad's old lil red pickup truck as we drive to other side of the island to go dirtbike riding with my mom and brother. It's also become something I dont /have/ to associate with that. I got a vinyl record of it when I was about 15/16 and used to play it while dancing around the front room and making breakfast (various friends and partners over the years there or not). It's also mine. My solo drive peaceful music. Sittin, Waitin, Wishin :)
5. This is the sound of the Spongebob Squarepants Movie ending. That's it. That's what it is. First credits song. One of the rare movie endings where the credits actually go SO HARD and I actually prefer letting them play out. I watched this movie a billion times since it came out when I was a kid. The end credits when this plays show waves crashing and it looks like you're surfing and reminds me of Hawai'i, which is where I was still living when it first came out and I'd watch the DVD endlessly!! Perfect song. 0/0 notes. Ocean Man, Take Me By The Hand, Lead Me To The Land That You Understand
Lastly,, I probably would have skipped a song if I didn't like it bc I've been unliking a lot of my Liked Songs on Spotify lately so that my shuffle on Liked Songs is better and bam! There's the payoff! Didn't even skip one for this ask! Wahoo!
If anyone read this to the end, thanks for sharing these memories with me. :) Much love, always. I'll send this out to a few peeps, but if anyone wants it sent to them specifically so they too can be involved and/or ramble on, DM me/let me know! MWAH

The First Perfect Day
My first time doing FFF! I meant to post this last night but I accidentally saved it back into my drafts instead of posting it @flashfictionfridayofficial
Tumblr media
A veritable sea of sand, far as the eye could see, stretched out before them.
Aziraphale was getting so dreadfully tired of seeing it, and even more tired of needing to rub the grittiness out of his eyes and shake out his crude sandals every couple of steps. Crawley, on the other hand, seemed to be greatly enjoying how warm the sand felt against his belly as he glided along the endless expanse of dunes in his serpent form.
They’d each had orders from their respective head offices to keep tabs on the first humans when they were kicked from the garden, and so, for the past two days, they’ve been trekking along after them through the desert.
The sun beat down on the top of Aziraphale’s head as he tiredly trudged up and over a particularly large dune. While he wasn’t exactly one to question the Almighty’s choice of design, he couldn’t help but conclude that sand and sun had proven themselves to be a rather horrible combination. It was far too hot and much too bright to be hospitable for long, the sun baking everything in its sights to a crisp.
Something wet trickled down from his temple, and he wiped it away. Sweat. He was sweating like a human, though maybe that just came with donning a corporation.
He turned to his left, a question on the tip of his tongue, but it died when he saw that Crawley was gone. Perhaps the demon had had enough of the endless expanse of sun and sand, Lord knows Aziraphale was nearly at his limit too.
But that was when a squiggly black creature made itself known by sliding down the side of the dune next to him, sending a torrent of sand up into the air as he raced down. Aziraphale wrenched his wings up in an attempt to shield himself from the rain of sand.
“Are you quite done?” He snapped.
But Crawley just scaled right on up the dune again. “Nah. It’sss fun, you ssshould try it.”
“Absolutely not,” Aziraphale chose to keep one of his wings up, the better to block out some of the sun. It didn’t help much, and he still found himself squinting, but it was better than nothing.
Crawley gave the serpent equivalent of a shrug before sliding down the dune again with a “wahoo!”
Aziraphale shook his head and wiped at his brow. While Crawley had a bit of fun, he took the opportunity to try and catch his breath before they continued onwards. But during his little break, he hadn't realized just how close he was standing to the edge of his dune.
The soft edge gave way and he lost his balance as his center of gravity suddenly shifted, sending him careening forward into a presumably very sandy ditch. He yelped, wings frantically flapping to compensate for the sudden lack of solid ground under his feet.
And before he had the chance to brace himself, a hand covered in quickly retreating black scales shot out from behind him and grabbed hold of his heavenly robes, pulling him back onto semi-stable footing.
“Woah, there. Careful, angel.” Crawley said teasingly, though the next bit came out a touch too sardonically for Aziraphale’s liking, “Wouldn’t want you to suffer a fall, now would we?”
“No, no, we— I, I wouldn’t want that.” He managed to catch himself, though he was embarrassed by the turn of events. Crawley gently let go of his robe, leaving behind a wrinkle to which Aziraphale brushed away with a mere thought. He took a calming breath, trying to soothe his obviously ruffled feathers. “Thank you.”
“Save it. Look, I think I saw an oasis a few paces back. What’dya say we go check it out and get out of this sun for a bit?” Crawley asked, already turning on his heel in the direction he apparently saw signs of vegetation in, and grimaced when his foot immediately sank into the sand. The first few steps he took were wobbly and riddled with grunts of effort, but he managed well enough. “Oh wow, I can see why walking through this put you in such a bad mood.”
“It’s not the most pleasant experience.” Aziraphale huffed, stumbling after the demon. Oh, he really did hope there was an oasis. One with plenty of shade, and maybe even a refreshing pool of water would be lovely. But then, what about his duty to watch over the humans? “Do you think the humans will be alright on their own for a little while?”
“I’m sure they will.” Crowley grinned back at him, his smile somehow brighter than the sun. And then, to really sweeten the deal, he gave an innocently tempting sway and added, “I didn’t mean to get a bunch of sand in your wings. I could take a look at them when we get there. If you want, of course, but I can only imagine how much they must itch.”
“I’d…” Aziraphale trudged up next to him, looking into the surprisingly sincere eyes of an even more surprisingly kind demon, “I’d like that very much.”
“Good, it’s just back a little ways. Let’s go.”
Sure enough, there was a small oasis with a delightfully cool pool of clean water and verdant plant life surrounding it.
Crawley settled Aziraphale on a low boulder in the shade and settled in behind him, motioning for him to spread his wings. Gentle fingers combed through his coverts down through to the tips of his primaries, freeing the annoying grains of sand, causing Aziraphale to hum and sigh in pleasure.
They then spent the rest of the afternoon soaking in the pool, scrubbing away the accumulated dust and sand of the desert from their skin, before moving on to lounge against a couple of rocks in the shelter of a cluster of palm trees. Crawley even pulled out some of the fruit that he pilfered before leaving The Garden, and shared it with the angel.
Since leaving The Garden, this had felt like the first perfect day in history.

stanarrator 7 (...to shut them up)? seems fitting
WAHOO ive been marinating on this one and i think i hit something perfect and sweet
7: A kiss ...to shut them up.
Things had been going… surprisingly well, since Stanley and the Narrator had realized their feelings for one another.
The Parable was endless, and their concept of time passing faulty, but both entities knew that they had been together for a long, long time. Too much time, at least, too much time to be at each others' throats. When that kind of eternity stretches out in front of you, containing nothing but a single other person's presence (in its own way), you have to adapt to the situation or go insane.
Stanley had tried going insane. The Narrator, too!
Both of them decided pretty unanimously, that being sane together was much more preferable.
And of course, when the eons had passed them by and their interactions took on that golden hue of familiarity, of comfort and camaraderie, it was natural for something… else, to develop in the soft in-betweens.
The Parable was a comforting, warm sweater. Its paths were known to both so intimately, the way the other worked understood on a level akin to instinct. Stanley could read thousands of different stories in the varying inflections of the Narrator's voice, even as it spoke the same words it always had. The Narrator could see the paths of mischief and play in the slightest tilt of Stanley's head, in the color of his thoughts.
So it was natural, and completely expected, when the two of them fell in love.
Nothing about their relationship could have been considered normal, but as the time whiled away and they enjoyed this new facet of their time together to its fullest, they realized that, maybe, just maybe, they might want to experience at least a little bit of that normalcy. Only a little, and only in one way:
Stanley wanted to see the Narrator. Wanted to touch him. And, good for him, the Narrator wanted that, too.
"Now, Stanley, there's still a bit of work I need to do on the insides," the fellow nattered, the sound of shuffling paper completely arbitrary as he pulled up and prepared to load this new file. "I've got the mesh, well, done. But it's not ready for a complete debut yet!"
Why was he showing Stanley, then? You'd think the fellow wouldn't want to show off something unfinished.
A shimmer of a flush in the lights of Stanley's office. "Yes, well- you'd be right, of course, that I wouldn't want just anybody to see my work before it's perfected, but-"
Stanley grinned. He knew.
"Of course you do," the Narrator chuckled. "You're not just anybody."
He cleared his throat. "And besides, I need a little bit of feedback. I've been looking at this thing for so long, I fear I may be overlooking any minor problems. Need a fresh pair of eyes to make sure I don't have, I don't know, too many fingers or some such. And I trust your glitch-seeking eyes, Stanley."
Stanley sat up straight, eager and expectant. Whenever the fellow was ready, so was he.
"Alright. Okay!" The nerves sang clear through his voice, even as excited as he sounded. "Okay, close your eyes, Stanley."
Stanley did as he was told.
Several seconds passed, before the Narrator cleared his throat. "Alright, I- no, wait, hold on. Forgot to switch my audio output."
Another few seconds. "There we go-" and it was coming from in front of Stanley. He wiggled in place, impatient and grinning so wide it hurt.
"Alright. Open them."
He did.
"Now, like I said, I'm not fully happy with some things going on inside, and honestly if you think I'd look better with a different shade of hair, please feel free to shower me with criticisms as you always do- or, or if you think it'd look better longer, or shorter, too! Don't hold anything back, dear boy, just tell it to me how it is, I can handle it-"
He was working himself into a spiral, as per usual.
Stanley knew how to fix that. And, completely coincidentally, that aligned perfectly well with the overwhelming urge that took his breath away as soon as he'd laid eyes on his Narrator for the first time.
Stanley swooped in, and kissed him senseless.
An eternity passed before they parted. The Narrator looked sufficiently rebooted. Stanley pat himself on the back for his kissing prowess.
That broke the moment; the Narrator snorted, and the two of them devolved into a silly giggling fit, arms still wrapped tight around each other.
"That's not criticism, Stanley!"
Maybe he should do it again, then.
"…that would be acceptable."
And so he did.

👉👈 callie × frye? any headcanons, thoughts?
I THINK THEY ARE SO NICE!!!!! I really like the idea of them together <3 probably maybe a teeny bit more than mariver,,, perhaps
For ship names we aren't working with a whole lot here... we got either crye, frallie, or something like calfrye so do what you will with that
extrovert x extrovert for the win these two lesbians are so insane
frye is so impulsive and callie is like almost always down to do whatever she wants, so their dates are often just the most spontaneous weird ideas that frye had and they decided to go out and do them
some of them are normal like "we went and got pizza late at night bc all of a sudden we just wanted pizza!" but then there are some like "frye woke up at 3am and demanded we try breaking into wahoo world bc she had a dream about a ride there... we got kicked out."
callie is so cuddly in her sleep (and kinda in general too) but whenever her and frye are napping or just asleep at night callie is curled up right next to her, always touching frye in some way otherwise she cannot sleep
frye would love dancing with callie so much, they might take one of those dance classes for couples and end up just dancing with each other in their living room when they're supposed to be cleaning the apartment all the time
frye also loves to play with callie's hair since its so long and sometimes it'll accidentally make her fall asleep bc its like a nice massage on her scalp. she kinda needs it tbh since she wears it up so often and it tugs on her scalp a lot, frye takes care of her <3
they like to do a lot of cute mutual self care things with each other like face masks and doing each others makeup and such, its just a cute way they spend time together after long days
they go on double dates with mariver! and pearlina!!!
since both callie and frye can have a lot of energy at times and they need to be stimulated to dispel the energy so they'll do stuff together, frye might say something like "i feel like just running right now! I can't sit still at all" and callie will be like "let me grab my sneakers, lets go"
on the opposite side of the spectrum, if one of them is drained the other probably is too, they have basically identical energy levels like they're synced up or something lol
they love to give each other lots of little kisses ;-; on the forehead, cheek, hands, lips, all over their face, they just always show affection like that with each other
one time callie gave frye a forehead kiss after she had just put lipstick on and she forgot about it so when she leaned back to look at frye she just started laughing
"what?? why are you laughing cal?" frye can't see it but the pink lipstick callie was wearing made a perfect imprint of her lips where they had been on frye's forehead, so she just has a splotch of pink in the middle of her forehead
she probably looked in a mirror or in the camera on her phone and once she saw too she started laughing, then she wanted to get revenge so she put on lipstick herself and purposefully kissed all over callie's face so there would be a bunch of lip marks on her
they ended up laughing and messing up their lipsticks but it was fun and they love to spend time with each other <3 so its worth it

3, 17, and i'll re-ask 16 to get whatever other one you meant!
3. What were your top five books of the year?
WAHOO! I like this one it's made me realize that I actually loved way more books this year than I was giving credit to. Let's say:
5. We Have Always Live in the Castle by Shirley Jackson. Loved loved loved this one it's turned me into a big #ShirleyHead and also (along with Hill House) is responsible for some other takes I've had about books this year which I'll expound on later.
4. Go Ahead in the Rain: Notes on a Tribe Called Quest by Hanif Abdurraqib. Nobody's doing it like him. Only music writer I've ever read who is actually capable of communicating the music itself just over text, loves the things he writes about so strongly that it makes you as the reader love them too, beautiful beautiful collection and piece of work. A Little Devil in America would be on here too but I'm limiting myself to one book per author to resolve both this and the Nabokov problem.
3. When the Angels Left the Old Country by Sacha Lamb. First book I finished in 2023 and one of my all-time favorites :] It's so smart and so lovingly written and so complex and doing such fun things with religion and history and gender and also it's a fun and excellently-paced read. Recommend without qualification
2. Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov. Well. It's Lolita innit
1. Stephen Florida by Gabe Habash. Would I argue that Stephen Florida is "better" than Lolita? Who knows. Depends on the day. But I did love it more than any other book I've read in recent memory. The most directly invested I've been in a story in a long time, spent huge stretches of it being so stressed out about multiple things at once that I had to pause every five pages to catch my breath. Stunning depiction of a deeply unlikable character who you still want to win an unwinnable situation. Hostile to any attempt of a reader to figure out what it "means" or is "saying". Fantastic commitment to character voice. Perfect ending that had me totally motionless and speechless for maybe ten minutes. Have never in my life been more disappointed to find out that an author hasn’t written anything else. Man. Nobody is doing it like that.
16. What was the most overhyped book of this year?
Sob really funny of Sarah to get Annihilation and you to get The Only Good Indians by Stephen Graham Jones. This wasn’t my first answer because it certainly is less broadly overhyped than Annihilation but I haven’t heard a single other person have negative feelings about it and I’m baffled by this. It fell into such a constant and repetitive trap of overexplaining things to me, both exposition and description of things that were supposed to be scary, and it drove me nuts. It being the year of Ms. Shirley Jackson certainly did not help, since she really has the perfect balance of how much to describe something to keep it scary, which isn’t super fair to Mr. Jones but it’s true regardless. Plus I thought how it treated women was really strange (derogatory), which I would have cared about much less in a better book but in this one really stuck out and weakened it further. And overall I just did not at all really understand what it was trying to do, which could be on me but I’m certainly too annoying to admit it, the pacing did not work for me at All and it just. Ugh. Didn’t like it!!
17. Did any books surprise you with how good they were?
I was kind of shocked by how much I liked Where Are Your Boys Tonight? but I have already talked about that one. So let’s go with The Assassin’s Apprentice by Robin Hobb. It wasn’t like life changing or anything but it was a much more fun read than I was expecting since last attempt I made I bounced off the narration style immediately. But despite its many many concessions to the great weaknesses of epic fantasy I still intend to read the sequel and I especially love how Hobb engages with, uh, pain and sickness and disability and how she refuses to let them fade away and seems to really understand the extent to which pain and extended sickness alter people. I’m so so so excited to get to the torture because of this

Soooooo the Mario movie was awesome! Definitely the best movie-going experience I've had since Spiderman No Way Home! Illumination really outdid themselves and I think that this has to be the best movie they've done, even more so than the first two Despicable Me movies and Sing! And I can tell they and Nintendo put so much effort into this and making it a giant fan to Mario fans everywhere, from the kids to those who have been there from the beginning. It wasn't perfect (I mean, what movie is, and is there really such a thing as perfection?) but it was still a lot of fun!!!!
Below is what I loved about the movie and what I felt could have been better! Just a heads-up, there ARE spoilers. Even though it has pretty much the typical storyline of most Mario games and is therefore somewhat predictable, I don't want those who haven't seen it yet to miss out on being blown away as I was about it.
*********************************************************************
The Ups:
MARIO. HE IS THE BIGGEST SWEETHEART. HE LOVES HIS BROTHER SO SO MUCH. HE WOULD FETCH A STAR FROM SPACE FOR HIS BROTHER IF HE COULD. I WOULD DIE FOR HIM AND THE LOVE HE HAS FOR HIS BABY BRO. And from the beginning, he's so determined and motivated and never gives up! And it's his brother that motivates him to do most of what he does! I also liked the little details they added to his character that we never got to see before, such as the fact that he initially hates mushrooms.
Peach was amazing! At first I thought that they girlbossed her a bit too much to the point where she was a carbon copy of Daisy, but now I see her as a kind, maternal, and feminine young woman who fights when she needs to and is just doing her job protecting her kingdom. I hate how people are bashing her characterization here, like, have they forgotten how she was in the DIC cartoons, the 1986 anime, and SUPER PRINCESS PEACH? I also like her backstory and she's so cute as a baby! Also, since I HC that she and Daisy are super close, maybe she learned a thing or two from her!
Toad was so silly and chaotic, and he stole every scene he was in!
Luigi was precious and Charlie Day was perfect for his voice, as I predicted! I can tell that he was totally channeling Tony Rosato at times. I loved so many of his moments on screen, especially when he protects his brother during the final battle!
Jack Black KILLED IT as Bowser! He made him a villain who's hilarious but intimidating and ferocious at the same time and not many people can pull that off effectively!
Donkey Kong was a bit annoying and Illumination-y but they did a good job with him here. Also HE DID THE SETH ROGEN LAUGH TWICE FACK YES
The voice cast in general was fantastic! Charlie Day, Kevin Michael Richardson, and Jack Black were literal perfection in particular, Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong was lit, and Keegan Michael Key was great for Toad, as I predicted! He's a very versatile comedian and voice actor, after all! Also, Chris Pratt's Mario has grown on me in a good way. Although I vastly prefer Charles Martinet, as well as Lou Albano (who has my favorite Mario voice ever), Chris really didn't do that bad of a job! He DID TOO put effort into voicing him, and his "Wahoo!"s and cries of delight and triumph were on point! The only voice that I still feel like I have to get used to is Anya Taylor-Joy as Peach. She's a talented actress but I don't think she entirely suited Peach's soft, feminine, and maternal nature, but that's just me.
Mario and Luigi's parents are so precious! In fact, their whole family is so cute and hilarious! They remind me of my own proudly Italian (mostly) family. And Charles Martinet voicing their dad was the icing on the cake! I'm just so glad we finally got to see their family in general.
I also like how the boys' situation of still living with their parents, (presumably) not pursuing college and working blue-collar jobs while in their 20s-30s wasn't portrayed in a negative way. It's a great way of telling audiences that it's okay if you haven't gone off on your own yet in adulthood or attended college, that life isn't a sequence of steps that everyone has to follow exactly and at the same time, and that patience, hard work, and a positive attitude will lead you to great opportunities in life when you least expect them, like with what happened to the bros.
THE BROS' REUNION HUG OH MY GOD!!!!!! THE FOREHEAD TOUCH AND MARIO LIFTING LUIGI OFF THE GROUND DURING THEIR SECOND EMBRACE, I ALMOST CHOKED ON MY ICEE AND BECAME A SOBBING MESS IN THE MIDDLE OF THE THEATER MY GOD
And then them teaming up together to defeat Bowser and his forces, AS IT SHOULD BE.
I mean seriously this movie was a slap to the face of everyone who thought Mario hates his brother
Mario and Luigi getting their own little house in the Mushroom Kingdom! AND COFFEE CUPS THAT MATCH THEIR HATS!!!!
Mario and Peach's relationship thus far! I love how close they are by the end of the movie, even though they haven't developed a romance yet, and how Mario was telling her all about Brooklyn and how he'll get her a pet turtle once he gets to take her there. D'awwwwwww.
Peach completing the trainer course ALL WHILE WEARING A FULL LENGTH BALL GOWN AND HEELS. AND her admitting that she didn't master doing it until she had tried multiple, multiple times was such a great addition to character, proof that while she may be more of a girlboss here she still has more character development than Rey in the Star Wars sequels.
Peach telling Luigi that he's brave was so sweet :3 Even though they didn't really have a proper meeting scene like I hoped, I'm glad they got to at least interact a little.
Although I wish they would have used the wedding dress from Odyssey or even Paper Mario, Peach's wedding dress here is so pretty!
Donkey Kong becoming an ally of Mario and them helping each other get to the Mushroom Kingdom was super nice, although I do feel their friendship could have been built on a little more and that DK should have apologized to Mario for insulting his brother.
THE MUSIC!!!!! Brian Tyler NAILED the orchestrations of all those iconic themes! I especially got so happy when I heard the SNES Rainbow Road theme, the DK rap, and Toad's House from SMB3! I can only imagine how Koji Kondo, the man who composed so many of these melodies for chiptune almost 40 years ago and is STILL composing music for the games, is feeling now that they have these epic, sweeping orchestral renditions.
They outdid themselves with the animation and visuals as well! ESPECIALLY the visuals. They're so colorful and whimsical and just scenery p0rn all around, from the Mushroom Kingdom giving off major Alice in Wonderland vibes and Bowser's incredible floating lava castle to the Jungle Kingdom and the rainbow road! And I can't think of a single character (re)design that I didn't like! They all look so good!
The slo mo bits were SO funny. Especially "MMMMMAAAAAAAAMMMAAAAA MMMMIIIIIIIAAAAAA!" and "PPPPPRRRRRIIIIIIINNNNNCCCCEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!"
Bringing back such an obscure and relatively forgotten character as Foreman Spike was awesome!
Every time that Diddy Kong was onscreen was so funny!
ALL THE EASTER EGGS, GOOD GOLLY. From the references to the SUPER SHOW OF ALL THINGS to the guy who's supposed to resemble Jumpman (Mario's first incarnation) at the beginning!
That one bit where Mario is sitting in his room playing a video game also felt really reminiscent of the beginning of The Great Mission to Rescue Princess Peach (1986). If Nintendo was going for that I'm so glad they acknowledged such an obscure piece of Mario media!
The Downs:
Goddammit, you SERIOUSLY had to include minions in the Illumination logo.
It honestly felt a bit rushed in places and I wish more scenes could have had more time devoted to them. Some characters, ESPECIALLY Luigi, didn't really get as much screen time as I felt they needed, and that kind of sucked.
I was really hoping for Bowser to have a hard rock-style villain song, as that really suits his aesthetic and Jack Black could totally have done it! I mean he was in School of Rock for crying out loud and he's proven afterwards that he can really belt out classic rock tunes! Despite that, I'm glad he got to at least sing in the movie, and his song dedicated to Peach was hilarious.
I'm bummed that the movie wasn't really a musical as I had heard around the net so many times; only two characters sang (Bowser and Toad, even though the latter's wasn't really an actual song) and there were a bunch of pop/rock hits from the past few decades sandwiched in. They were still good songs that I like though, such as Thunderstruck, Take on Me, and Holding Out for a Hero (although I wish it could have been the original Bonnie Tyler version). I was ESPECIALLY pumped to hear Mr. Blue Sky!! But still, a lack of songs sung by characters bummed me out.
I don't like how some lines were changed (such as Bowser's "NOW WHO'S GONNA STOP ME?!?!") or cut entirely (e.g. Mario's "I'm not afraid! I'll do anything for my brother!") I'm especially bitter about the latter, since hearing that line in the final trailer made me super emotional and cutting it meant less devotion to how much Mario loves and misses his brother.
It was kind of a wasted opportunity to not see Mario and Luigi's family (and the rest of Brooklyn for that matter) bewildered over their sons bringing back a princess in a wedding gown, a little mushroom man, and an ape wearing a necktie. I bet their dad would have been wondering what someone put in his coffee, and their mom would have taken one look at Peach and been all like, "OMG IS ONE OF MY SONS GETTING MARRIED ALREADY??" It just would have been nice for them to interact a little.
The blue star/Luma was honestly so annoying and gave me an unsettling identity crisis, I just thought that was not fitting for a family friendly movie. Also, why was he/she in Bowser's dungeon in the first place?
As Donkey Kong should have apologized to Mario for fighting with him, Spike should have apologized to Mario and Luigi for doubting them. It didn't really make sense for him to just abruptly cheering for them.
Part of me kind of wishes it had taken place in the 1980s. It kind of makes sense, given that the Mario and Luigi characters formally debuted in 1983 and this is an origin story for how they came to be.
But despite all this, there were way more ups than downs, and the "downs" are just little nitpicks from me that don't take away from the movie being one hell of a ride. It was fantastic, and definitely one of the best animated movies I've seen in a while. 9/10 from me!!.
Some of my several VERY high hopes for the sequel:
YOSHI CUTENESS!!!
Also, if I have to predict a voice actor for Yoshi, it would have to be either Frank Welker or Kazumi Totaka reprising his role.
Luigi getting more screen time and also getting to share in his bro's adventures! Dude deserves way better!
Mario having second thoughts about Luigi accompanying him in dangerous situations because he's terrified of losing him again, and Luigi reminding him that "nothing will harm them as long as they're together"
PLEASE just more brotherly love!
Mario and Peach developing a romance and vowing to protect each other!
At least one callback to the "Mama Luigi" episode of the Super Mario World cartoon series. I mean, it would only seem right now that Yoshi is joining the gang, right?
Heck, I bet it's going to be chock full of references to the Super Mario World game, the Yoshi's Island games, and the Super Mario World cartoon.
DAISY AND/OR ROSALINA PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE
Bowser's backstory (and possibly redemption)! It's clear to me that he's just a big softie that needs love and friendship in his life. And, since he's really their friend who likes to engage in role play just for fun according to word of mouth, I wonder how they will incorporate that into the Mario Cinematic Universe.
Some evidence that Mario and Luigi alternating between their lives in Brooklyn (probably just so that they can spend time with their family) and the Mushroom Kingdom
"I HOPE SHE MADE LOTSA SPAGHETTI!"

Saw your last post, so here goes!
What's your favorite scene from the dmc games? 👀
Hi, my dear mutual, thank you very much for the ask)))
The answer came to me surprisingly easy, though I have two of them because I can't decide - Nero roasting Goliath and King Cerberus weapon intro from 5. I love my plot (you know that), and there are some great emotional beats in dmc, but they are kind-of fanon in a way that, they exist in your head, you have to envision them happening. If it's dmc3 conflict scenes then you have to rely on your vision of what's going on through each twin's head in order to fully get the tragedy that's happening. There is beauty in leaving it to the imagination, and you know I love finding more and more stuff to be sad about interpretations of characters.
But also when you're in-game it's all wacky wahoo demon gore gameplay, keep calm and make them cry, have fun, y'know, so the best feeling cutscenes are the ones that resonate with your feelings as a player. This is also why all Vergil fights are so distinctive, cause with every other enemies you get to have fun and play around, but when it comes down to Vergil - it's now serious (though skilled players bully the hell out of him too). I imagine the same applies to the Nelo fight, and Mundus...if he wasn't a weird shooting gallery, the game does stumble there.
Nero bullying Goliath is just...very sweet in a way? Look at the adorable punk boi go!!! That's also kind the moment that solidifies him as the protagonist, cause if from there the entire game and plot were from his POV I wouldn't have minded at all (but I am very happy to have so many characters to play with). He feels much more self-assured, he grew out of teen angst that made him relatable, but kind of cringe-y to watch, and he just casually bullies a church-sized demon, that's very cool! Even started adapting his uncle's lazy-sleeping tendencies, that's adorable mimicry right there.
And KC weapon introduction is just chef's kiss. It's absolutely perfect. The KC fight itself is all great and fun and crazy, and the weapon intro is the cherry on top.
youtube
Seriously, just listen to the boss fight music. I have no idea who allowed this, but I want to thank them very much. When did the game become a techno-rave??? Why is an elemental dog techno-raver??? I have no idea, but this is so. fun. Also the little smile Dante does in that spin attack kills me, it's adorable (also Dante clearly needed new toys to play with as moral support for 5 plot)
Honourable mention: Nico barely avoiding hitting Nero and Nero going 'perfect timing'. That had me snorting xD
I would love to hear your answer to the question as well!

My thoughts on the Super Mario Movie
Tumblr media
My autistic ass needs someone to talk to about this film and I have nobody. I know I don’t post as often anymore on here but I need to let this energy out. Here’s what did work and didn’t work
What did work:
the animation: DAMN. It looked amazing. I loved how smooth they looked on screen and the details of the character models, the background, etc. You can tell they put a lot of love into it. It felt so nice to see our favorite video game characters on screen like this. All of the references were such a joy to find and recognize. It’s also crazy that Mario came from being an 8bit model to this glorious, detailed, 3D model. And some scenes “camera” moved in a way that would be in a game. When Mario and Luigi were on their way to their first plumbing job, the “camera” moved sideways as the first Mario games were side-scrolling. When Toad and Mario were heading to the castle and poor Mario was being thrown around, the “camera” moved around like I guess the newer games? I mean it looked like Super Mario Odyssey but there could be other games, I haven’t played every single one (now I want to). Really cool attention to detail. My autistic ass loves attention to detail. The models looked good as well like Bowser’s scales and the brothers’ clothing. Funny how 3D animation wasn’t as detailed before like with Veggietales and Toy Story 1 but now we have HAIR. You get it.
The music: Some parts hit, some didn’t. I loved the orchestral remixes of our beloved songs. When the kart scene came on, I immediately recognized the music and felt PUMPED, especially when they were making the karts and I heard the Mario Kart 8 theme. I wanted to jump out of my seat but couldn’t cause I didn’t wanna be weird. Hearing the theme songs as well felt satisfying. It scratched that itch I didn’t know I needed to be scratched. I found myself listening to the soundtrack right after. I’m glad they chose 80’s songs rather than fucking Doja Cat or whatever but it still threw me off hearing Take On Me, Holding Out for a Hero, and Mr. Blue Sky. (Cmon Shrek did Holding Out better. No topping it) As much as I love those songs, I remembered that this is an Illumination movie so of course they’d have popular songs. If they left the pop songs in the human world and kept the Mario songs in the Mushroom kingdom, etc, it would’ve made a little more sense. No Sleep til Brooklyn was good tho, made sense cause they live in Brooklyn and they were in the human world.
Chris Pratt: Yes, I know everyone was skeptical of Chris Pratt playing Mario. I love Chris in Guardians of the Galaxy as Peter Quill so I didn’t have much doubt but since he is a celebrity and you know how movies these days (mainly Illumination) love to get big names in their films. I wasn’t disappointed. He was good, not bad. As much as I love Martinet’s iconic Mario, I don’t think I’d be able to handle hearing it the whole time. It’s iconic but let’s be real hearing “let’s-a-go!” the whole time is a bit jarring. Mario’s from Brooklyn so that’s what Chris tried. And his Wahoo! was good! You knew he didn’t want to ruin this character because of how much it holds. He TRIED. And Martinet as Giuseppe saying “it’s a perfect!” Felt like he was sharing the torch with Chris. He squished all the critics doubts by saying “he’s Mario too, it’s fine. Deal with it.” Hearing the voice made me smile so wide, it was like hearing an old friend. I think he even said that doing Mario’s voice too much hurt so we don’t want him to feel any pain for our sake! We all owe Chris an apology. You did great bro
Seth Rogan: I love DK. He’s big, loud, goofy, and strong. Seth did that right and honestly idk who else would play him. Hearing Seth’s iconic laugh made me laugh, idk who can hate it. It fit DK as it kind of…sounded ape-like? The whole fight between Mario and DK was straight out of a game. I loved the interaction between DK and Mario. They’re enemies at first but soon, they respect each other as in the games. I wish that wasn’t the whole character development between two characters in the movie, I wish it was Mario & Luigi, Mario and toad, or Mario and Peach. Hell, even Mario and Bowser. But this is only the first movie so we’ll see more
Anna-Taylor Joy: not much to say about her. I think Peach was fun and I’m glad they didn’t go the “damsel in distress” or “girl boss” route. I’m tired of woke. We get it, we’re becoming SOMEWHAT better in terms of shit like that but god we don’t need it every time. Peach was a badass, she cared for her kingdom and subjects, and she was sweet. That’s Peach! It wasn’t the “I don’t need no man” or forced relationship with Mario and that was good. I loved Peach’s racing outfit too and all the power ups. Peach was awesome, I’m glad they didn’t ruin her
Charlie Day: I haven’t seen much of him but wow I loved his Luigi! I always loved Luigi, he was always the b guy and he deserves a lot of love. He’s adorable. I wish Luigi had more of an interaction with Bowser. We could’ve gotten a lot of funny scenes with them together (of course it’d be fuel to the shipping fire) and it was cut too short. I mean, bowser didn’t need MUCH from Luigi, he just needed information so it wouldn’t make sense why he’d keep him around when he could throw him in the dungeon with Luma, the penguins, etc. And the whole thing with Mario and Luigi “sticking together” was nice but…they weren’t together AS much? Yes, Bowser kidnapped him but idk it didn’t really feel so emotional. Their team up at the end was amazing of course, had the biggest smile with the star music on. Luigi must be protected
Keegan-Michael Key: His Toad was good! Kind of wished we saw more of Toad and Mario together but he was the comic relief. Sucked he wasn’t in it as much but maybe next movie.
Jack Black: MY MAN. GOD HE KILLED IT. Was that any surprise? No, everyone knew Jack was gonna bring his a-game and he did. Bowser’s singing was amazing, I was cracking up during that scene. PEACHES PEACHES PEACHES aah it’s good. I loved how Bowser went from his usual scary self to a big sweetheart who just wants to love someone. Yea, he did threaten to kill Peach’s kingdom if she didn’t marry him but hey he said he wouldn’t if she agreed! You can absolutely tell Jack loved his role and that’s so important in movies for it to turn out well. Honestly, I’d say Bowser was my favorite in the whole movie! (Ngl, Bowser kinda..) Bowser was intimidating at parts, especially with Luigi. He was a lot scarier than I remembered and damn he is a power house. Im surprised that I didn’t see him utilize his shell and spin with it but whatever.
The story: yes there wasn’t much of a big plot. Do I care? Not really. It’s Mario! You don’t really need a plot per se because you already know the characters, you know the concept of Super Mario. To me, it was as if I was playing a really well animated game. It was fast, fun, and left me with a warm fuzzy feeling. The plot WAS Bowser coming, Mario and Luigi starting a company and not feeling like they’re on top. You don’t need a different story with Mario. Yes, this movie wasn’t on the level of Into the Spider-Verse or Puss in Boots like we were expecting but it didn’t need to be. I had a great time with a story or not
The sound effects: god, the little kid in me wanted to SCREAM. It felt so satisfying to hear all the sounds we hear in the games from hitting a shell, hitting the mystery box, or landing on the flag pole at the end of a level. They really hit the nail with them. And Luigi’s ringtone was GameCube!!
Oh yeah I loved Kamek’s voice. He sounded exactly how I pictured it. He was great. Loved the scene of him dressing up as Peach and getting ANGRY that he didn’t kiss Bowser
What didn’t work:
The slow motion moments: this was when I remembered “oh yea, illumination made this.” Some of the moments were fine with Mario giving Peach a side eye (with rizz). That was funny. But all the other times, it felt like the screaming goats in Thor Love and Thunder. In other words, it was used too much. To me, the slow-motion parts are just “haha, their voice is deep and slow. They move slowly. Haha funny joke.”
The songs: I did say the songs worked but they didn’t at the same time. I LOVED hearing all the familiar songs and sounds from the games. I liked the 80’s songs as Mario was made in the 80’s but it didn’t fit movie. As I said, it would’ve been better if they kept the 80’s songs in the human world and the Mario-esque songs in the Mushroom Kingdom, etc. But Illumination has gotta…illuminate I guess
The pacing: I felt like it was TOO quick. They go from Mario ending up in the Mushroom Kingdom and he finds Toad with barely an introduction and they rush to the castle. Then Mario finds Peach who just so happens to be going to the same place at the right time. There wasn’t enough time to breathe and there could’ve been so many good character interactions and development if they made it longer. We could have had more of Bowser and Luigi, Mario and Toad and Peach. I mean there are lots of characters and they have yet to introduce Yoshi, the Koopalings, and Daisy so hopefully it will be better in the second.
Illumination: I’m not too crazy with this studio. I love Despicable Me 1&2 but the rest are just meh. There were moments in the movie that were just so like this studio that it somewhat felt weird. The plumbing scene was funny but I think that is a good example. The whole thing with the dog being malicious was an Illumination thing. So were some of the models of the humans. The songs. Idk. If this movie was made by another studio like Dreamworks or Sony, maybe it would’ve been better??
Overall, I’d give this movie a 7.5/10. It had great moments and a lot going for it but there is still room for improvement. And that’s completely okay because we still have another movie. We only saw these characters on screen for ONE movie so there’s still more to be seen. I say fuck the critics, they don’t know what they’re talking about. This movie didn’t need to be woke or whatever. It almost didn’t need a plot. This movie was such a beautiful love letter to all of the Nintendo fans and I was smiling the entire time. They knew not to make it flop because of how iconic and beloved Mario is. I felt like a little kid again as I watched my favorite video game characters on screen and now I feel the need to play my Wii or switch. I look forward to seeing what they do in the next film.
TLDR: go see it. It’s a lot of fun
Also LET ME VOICE YOSHI I CAN DO HIS VOICE. IM GOING TO BE ON A TEACHER’S SALARY IM GONNA BE BROKE

Rightio, here is my full(ish) review of Peter Pan & Wendy.
My recommendation is to not go into this thinking it’s going to be a remake of the animated film. Because while there are nods (i.e. YOU CAN FLY IS IN THE SCORE!! WAHOO!!!) it’s more of a reimagining of Barrie’s novel. And when it comes to reimaginings... yeah, I think these writers did it pretty well.
I love that it starts off as the classic perception of the Peter Pan story being this wonderful, fun campy adventure, and then goes “hang on... there’s something pretty messed up about all of this... hey, what’s the deal with Peter and Hook?” and then it turns into more of a character study story. Ok it doesn’t turn into a full-on dark, gritty horror story but it does take a more serious turn.
How do people deal with growing up? Do they run away from the idea, do they grow up ‘wrong’ in Hook’s case, or do they accept it’s something they need to do and they’ll view it as the “greatest adventure of all”? Which, while the writing isn’t the same as it is in the book, that is what Barrie wrote. That thematic element has always been part of Peter Pan. So kudos to David Lowery for understanding that.
And I thought the new take on Peter and Hook’s relationship was a good predictable twist. It made sense and I thought it was emotionally impactful. I also like that the ending is ambiguous about what their relationship will be like in the future.
Ok, some more pros:
JUDE. LAW. AS. HOOK. I will go more in-depth about that but maaaaaaan I was so pleased with his performance and with the writing. Also this film continues the tradition that Mr. Smee is one of the most consistently perfectly-casted characters ever.
I really enjoyed Ever Anderson as Wendy. Yara Shahidi was so freaking cute as Tink (that final scene made me sob, ngl). I thought the Lost Boys were fine, they cute kids. The pirates were clearly having the time of their lives in these roles, they were so fun to watch. And Tiger Lily was pretty cool.
The way they got to Neverland was pretty creative. I actually rewound that scene a couple of times.
The ending. This will be the only comparison I make to the 2003 version (which need i remind everyone is literally my favourite film of all time...) - kudos for keeping it bittersweet.
Now for the cons, because this film isn’t perfect:
The pacing is... not the worst but not great.
Some of the editing transitions made me laugh and go “..huh?”
While while the lighting in Neverland looked a lot better than the trailers, the nursery scene was pretty hard to see.
I also wish Alan Tudyk was given more to do as Mr. Darling... and no, they don’t do the dual-casting with Hook.
I swear they cut out that epic jump Peter did in the trailer... did they cut that? If they did, that’s unfortunate, cos that looked badass.
And that’s... basically all the cons! Well, that I can think of.
So, again I can’t call this a flawless film but I also refuse to call it a soulless cash-grab because there was way too much effort in the writing for it to be dismissed as “soulless”. For a modern Disney live-action film, this could have been sooooo much worse, and you all know it. But I am very pleased with what I saw.
So, I’m giving it 4/5. And on my rankings of Peter Pan adaptations, I’m putting this at... three :)
