Revenge and Dollhouse for the ask game?

YES HI!!! Uhm I’ll do Dollhouse first!

My rating (1-10): I’d give it a 6, maybe. Which is to say that I enjoyed it A LOT but also I have just like. A Few Critiques. Just one or two.

My favourite character: ADELLE!! There is no contest here at all I loveee her

My least favourite character: Okay, this used to be super easy because I really hated Topher at first, but I have grown to tolerate him so. I mean I hate like almost all the clients and also Sierra’s handler, but you’re supposed to hate them so it’s not really specific to me, I guess. I’ll say Nolan though, for obvious reasons.

The character I think I'd be friends with: I think Ivy because I have friends that Ivy reminds me of heh

The character I think I won't hit off with: Maybe Ballard? He seems very serious I don’t know

My favourite episode/scene: EVERY SCENE WITH ADELLE. I’m kidding but only slightly. Uhh I really liked A Spy in the House of Love, though, and I think Echoes is pretty funny. Belonging has um. A LOT going on in it, but I will say I really liked Adelle in that one, too.

Whose clothing style I like best: Unfortunately, I’m legally obligated to say Topher because I dress exactly like him. It was slightly detrimental to my whole initial hating-him campaign that every time I saw him I went ‘ah I would wear that’

Times I watched it (and if I would again): Once! And I definitely would again; despite its flaws I do really like it and it’s not super long either. Plus Adelle.

My rating (1-10): 8.5! I love it a lot

My favourite character: UHHH HARD tie between Emily and Victoria. I do also really like Amanda so I don’t know.

My least favourite character: It’s been a hot second since I’ve watched this, so no one’s really jumping out to me. I will say though that I somehow forget that Jack exists half the time. I really don’t know how I manage that when he’s kind of a Main Guy, but it’s still a little surprise every time he shows up. This doesn’t even happen to Declan, just to him.

The character I think I'd be friends with: I’m not saying Ashley is normal, per se, but I am saying she’s MOSTLY normal. I feel like we could hang out and chat while I was blissfully unaware of any scheming.

The character I think I won't hit off with: I have a weird soft spot in my heart for Tyler but we most certainly would not be friends

My favourite episode/scene: SHOOT. Okay, I liked the party where it all came full circle to the beginning, and I feel like there were some really good twists, but I really like the scene where Amanda dies (which is stupid because I love Amanda but). Also I know this is SUCH a small thing, but for some reason that group shot of the Grayson’s after Victoria kills Helen means everything to me. It’s so silly, but I love it so much.

Whose clothing style I like best: Nolan, maybe? I don’t know, I feel like he had some iconic looks.

Times I watched it (and if I would again): I have a confession to make guys, I actually have not finished it yet 😔. I’m actually still in the middle of season 3 because I’m slow at watching things sometimes. But I have really liked it so far, so odds are pretty good it would be something that I will rewatch!!

Sorry, I just thought of an answer to the least favourite character thing. I HATE AIDEN. I HAVE NO RHYME OR REASON I JUST DISLIKE HIM.

Once upon a time, I intended to write a Topher & Echo Have A Fun Day With Shooting And Throwing Axes.

Yeah, I don't know what crack I was smoking, either. Mostly I wanted to give Topher a goddamn BREAK because my man was about to lose his goddamn mind.

This has been sitting in my email drafts for... five years? 09/2018, to be precise.

Free to a good home, be kind to Topher (we know what happens to him, my boy needs love.)

"Did I fall asleep?"

"For a little while."  Topher was stressing hard, but trying to keep his voice calm for the Active in the chair.

"Shall I go now?"

"Oh my God, YES PLEASE." He coughed, and shook his head. "I mean, if you like." Topher retreated into the post-imprint script even as every molecule of his being vibrated under his skin.

The Active and her handler left the lab, and Topher collapsed onto his couch. He wanted to go fully fetal, wrap his arms around his head, pull up his hoodie and scream until his voice was gone. Because honestly, he was having real trouble with the thought of his plans for his tech in the hands of people who were not him. But worse, it had been Adelle who had betrayed him, and that was the current bomb about to crack his coconut.

But he didn't trust Ivy within a league of his programming station, much less his imprints. And Doctor Whiskey Saunders was bat guano insane and prone to doing things like stalk him in the server room where he slept--past tense, notice, because he didn't sleep any more. Not with crazy doctor lady on the loose.

So he was working on a thirty-six hour no-sleeping binge, and he was starting to think that he was the one in need of a treatment, because Dolls didn't really care about things like misused tech and betrayal.  Or not sleeping.  Or crazy ex-Doll doctors.  

"Okay!"  Topher shot up off the couch, jerking himself awake with a shout.  The fact that he was even *considering* wiping his own coconut and wandering out with the bison meant that he needed help, capital-H Help, and it was quite possible there was no one in the House who cared enough to help.

"Topher?"  

"Aaah!"  He jerked, shocked as he turned around.  "Boyd!"  Of course, and Echo behind him.  "You... you... I told you I was gonna make you wear a bell if you didn't stop!"  The comment was directed at Echo and Boyd equally, though it was Echo he'd warned.  

"You need to get out of here for a little while," Boyd said calmly.  

"You're tired," Echo said just as quietly, and her fingertips reached out to gently touch the bags under his eyes.  "You need to sleep.  But you don't."

"Uh, no, there's about a thousand things on my mind keeping me from sleeping, and even if I was tired--which I'm not--" he was actually beyond exhausted and headed into sleep-deprivation.

"Trust me."  Echo pointed to the chair.  "Make me safe to help you."

Topher cocked his head to the side, and then looked back at Boyd.  "What is she saying?"

"Echo is booked on an anonymous gig who paid twice the normal fee to not give a name.  Only an address where the Active is to be dropped off," Boyd clarified.  "So you print her as whatever you need.  Bodyguard, teddy bear, exotic dancer that plays video games, I don't know.  Print her, take her, and go here."  He gave Topher a key.  "That's the executive suite at the Forrester, on the other side of town.  Ivy will take over printing for a couple of days, and you come back after you've gotten 48 hours of downtime."

Specific whump trope I'd like to see:

Okay, so, "proud character having to beg for the life of someone they love" is great, obviously, but I'd really love to see "proud character having to beg for the life of someone they hate, but someone they love loves."

Can be a love triangle thing, but it could also be different kinds of love. A is in love with B, but hates B's friend, and now A is being told to beg for the friend's life. That.

The idea of "Do you love B more than you hate C?"

Gemma’s trigger words / Tabula Rasa

What is Tabula Rasa? Tabula rasa is a Latin phrase which, as translated by Adelle DeWitt, means “blank slate.” It is the philosophical idea that humans are born with no knowledge of any kind and that they gain knowledge through experience. The Dollhouse has, therefore, co-opted the term to refer to the empty mental state of a wiped Active.

Note Gemma can randomly become a blank slate randomly due to the chair that her father had used on her. It was not created properly so it did damage to pathways within her mind. Hence why she can randomly lose memories and sometimes become a different imprint.

After each engagement (mission), she is wiped, made to forget anything about that personality. After being wiped, she asks, ‘If she has fallen asleep?’ Which someone replies (usually the one doing the imprinting) ‘only for a little while.’ Each doll is programmed to have a call and response, which helps keep them in line. (In a way). Once wiped, she is Persephone, yes like the goddess, in the house that ‘she’ was created in (The Washington D.C. house), they use gods/goddesses names for their Actives (Dolls). While in this state, Persephone (Gemma) is no longer anyone. Personality is no longer existent and replaced with a child-like one. Knowing only basic things (how to shower, go to the bathroom, feed herself, swim, and color,) Everything else is new to her, and she would have no understanding of it.

They keep her in this state so that her mind is blank (hence, the blank slate reference) in this state makes her mind easier to manipulate and imprint. But, this comes at a cost, especially for the new chair that her father has created. Matthew claims that the chair has been recreated to near perfection, but it is far from the original. The one that Topher Brink practically perfected. Because of this, it leaves scars and damage to her brain. Over time, it will become less and less likely that the old Gemma will return. It is more likely that Persephone (Doll Gemma) will remain, being a blank slate forever. Something her father, Matthew, would not be too upset about because this means that it worked.

Every doll Including Gemma has a full script (IE calls and responses) and they are; Post Wipe (Which this is how it should go, now, with Gemma it was different. They rarely spoke to her, however the imprint/programming for this call and response still remains.)

I’d also like to add I am open to exploring the idea that because of how bad of a job her father did with her programing she might be able to be triggered by some other people. But for the sleeper stuff only her father/brother can do that. 

Programmer: Hello, (Name of Active). How are you feeling? Active: Did I fall asleep? Programmer: For a little while. Active: Shall I go now? Programmer: If you like.

Handler / Active Handler: (Gemma’s handlers were her brother and father, unless in the doll verse where it is David Cromwell)

Handler / Active Handler: Everything’s going to be alright. Active: Now that you’re here. Handler / Active Handler: Do you trust me? Active: With my life.

To be wiped/imprinted

All you have to say is something along the lines of “Would you like a treatment?” (The word treatment being the trigger word) This will have the doll respond simply with a smile and a ‘I like my treatments.’ Though the doll/active does not know what the treatment is, all the know is they want them. 

And some Dolls are sleepers (Persephone being one of them), and they have remote triggers that will activate them. For this, think of Bucky/Winter Soldier. However, unlike Bucky/Winter solder, this can only be activated by one person (her father or brother), and the script can change from active to active. It goes as follows. And mind you this is only for Gemma. 

Activation

Activator: The weather calls for heavy rain, better wear your green rain coat.  Active: [no response, but the ‘sleeper’ is activated] These sleepers are usually set to kill and nothing else. They become solely focused on the task at hand. Killing their target. 

To Deactivate

Activator: The rain has lightened up, you should wear your yellow raincoat. Active: [no response, but the 'sleeper’ is deactivated.]

finished my Dollhouse rewatch yesterday and it was a lot of fun revisiting the show. But much like before, I find them thinking killing the company founder and destroying one building belonging to an international company that has already proven capable of functioning just find without it's founder while he's been fucking off to play with a personal experiment... very naive.

The idea that blowing up that one building will destroy the tech already delivered into their hands and built... like, that shit's been backed up. Every Rossum building in the world has a copy of the blueprints.

And of course the two Epitaph episodes validate me on this. Ten years later the world is in apocalypse mode because of this tech and has been for several years.

While I do get that Topher needed to hear it was over before the time jump happened (his trauma conga line is never ending isn't it?) but... Adelle and Echo and all the others absolutely had to realize blowing up one building was winning a battle, not the war right?

still wish we could have had an s3 - with the LA dollhouse shut down and the Tucson building destroyed, the protags set their sights on trying to tear down the rest of Rossum while Senator Perrin moves towards a presidential run, Alpha's redemption arc finally begins, and progress is made towards freeing Whiskey from Clyde 2.0

It would have been a very different vibe from the first two seasons, which could have been a very good thing
