✧・゚: * extremely toxic boyfriend! eugene x reader ✧・゚:*
tw dark content: gaslighting, manipulation, slut shaming, misogyny, sexual threats, objectification, some physical abuse
the worst kind of toxic is the one that acts like it's not. he is constantly gaslighting you into thinking everything he says is reasonable
loves teasing that is borderline criticizing/complaining, usually about your behavior, combines this with gaslighting
if you happen to be a very touchy/lusty girlfriend, he gives into you most of the time and only teases sometimes. if it gets excessive, he starts to get angry and threaten you
"Are you finished? You know, I could make you a prostitute if I wanted. Then you could have as much sex as you want. I'm sure there are lots of creepy men who would love to touch you."
somewhat misogynistic. he acts like he respects you and he does a little, but on the inside, he believes you should be following his every order and it comes out sometimes
manipulates you into staying home so you don't make trouble and he can keep an eye on you. plus he likes coming home to his girlfriend/wife waiting for him with food and . . . a "warm hug"
he won't hit you outright, but he might press on your mouth or pin you to the bed if he's angry, probably because you were talking too much while he was trying to work. if you really pissed him off, he may even duct tape your mouth shut for a while
while that is happening, he'll make sure to rub you and grope you more often so you realize he doesn't need you talking to him and he's perfectly happy playing with your body alone
"It's much better this way, right? No more arguing," he says as he firmly pulls in your waist and nuzzles his face into your neck. "You know I love you, right?"

Toxic Individualism In Modern Witchcraft
The modern witchcraft movement is very much a product of the 20th century, and one thing it picked up from that was a pretty individualist way of thinking. This isn't all bad, since it helped normalize people being allowed to do spirituality in a way that truly resonated with them, rather than following whatever an institution prescribed for them.
But as many of us know, western individualism comes with a lot of really toxic shit, encouraging and even enshrining apathy, cruelty, and social Darwinism. This, unfortunately, is very much an attitude you occasionally see within modern witchcraft.
This is sometimes expressed through a "let 'em sink or swim" attitude. For example, you might see people bristle at the idea of warning people about dangers such as toxic plants; "well, they should know to just research this themselves, if they get hurt, that's their own faults." Never mind that most of us live in a socioeconomic environment where "natural" tends to be equated with "safe," and few people were taught any real amount of research skills. (Most people don't know how to research beyond "type a thing into Google and click the first link" or "watch a video on YouTube and follow the algorithm.")
There's this sort of idea that witchcraft and the occult is this kind of Darwinian proving ground. You're either just born having what it takes, or you're not. Supposedly, there's no need to warn people about red flags, fascist rhetoric, pseudohistory, or anything, because supposedly, the "worthy" will just be able to find their own way on their own. Anyone who doesn't make it? Anyone who ends up poisoning themselves or falling down the alt right pipeline or abused by a predator? Couldn't be helped; they were never "meant" for this path anyway. It was simply too much for them. Why, if you really think about it, it was their own faults for daring to reach above the station they were born for, anyway.
This is a completely irrational view, because it's simply not how things work. People aren't born having research skills, critical thinking skills, or knowing the difference between real history and pseudohistory; they're taught these things. And some people are statistically much less likely to receive a good education than others. There are a few people who beat the odds and end up better educated than most people in their socioeconomic status, but this doesn't mean that they were born with inherent greatness; it just means that they were curious and lucked out in finding the right materials.
As many of us also know, Victorian-era eugenicists believed that members of the upper class were just inherently better. They had the genes for intelligence and strength of will. (Yeah, that whole modern occult fixation with willpower has some dodgy origins, too.) They just ignored that whole thing where they lived in a socioeconomic system designed to keep most people in poverty. If they ever saw someone beat the system, they attributed it to that person being born exceptional for some reason. I would highly recommend that anyone who hasn't done so already watch Shaun's video, The Bell Curve, which criticizes the book by the same title that effectively tries to argue for Victorian-age eugenics, to get a better picture of this whole thing.
Toxic individualism also encourages thinking of individuals as main characters on some kind of hero's journey, where every pain they suffer and every mistake they make is a vitally important part of their journey and growth; so much so that any effort to prevent them from making mistakes or suffering harm is hindering their personal growth.
Sure, people do often gain valuable insight from their mistakes and suffering. But it's absurd to claim that this is always the best way for people to learn and grow, especially if there's a risk of serious harm for themselves or others. Certainly it's much better to learn from a friendly Tumblr post that essential oils can give you chemical burns or harm your pets than experience it first-hand. And it's much better to learn what far right rhetoric looks like beforehand so you can recognize it when you first see it, rather than get drawn into some far right belief system and perpetuate harm on vulnerable minorities for any amount of time. (This whole thing of acting like you're life's main character and other people are basically just NPCs on some hero's journey that you imagine yourself to be on is so immensely fucked up.)
And finally, if anybody out here finds themselves thinking, "but nobody should expect help from others; after all, I didn't get any!", I'm gonna tell you: it shouldn't have been that way. You didn't not get help because that's just how the world works; you didn't get help because that's how modern western socioeconomics are created to work. Toxic individualism is a construct, and it's one that we can dismantle and replace with something better.

Spiritual vloggers say things like, “I was diagnosed with PTSD and depression but I don’t claim those.” I know everyone has their own process but it kinda makes me sad? Spiritual bypass doesn’t allow your practice to do anything if you deny what your nervous system survived.
I see the same kind of bypass with chronic illness and autism (“Oh, I’m not neurodivergent and traumatized by an abusive and cruel world, I’m actually a Highly Sensitive Starseed!”) and it all stems from ableism no matter how sparkly you make it sound.
Look, I don’t resonate with most of humanity either. I genuinely feel alien, I do not feel from here. It is comforting to use otherworldly archetypes to process my existence. I think this is the point of existing; our hand-stitched inner mythology.
But… it’s okay to have a disability. It doesn’t make you “out of alignment” or “low vibration” or anything like that.
A higher, more evolved version of humanity is not one in which disability doesn’t exist at all. It’s one in which disability is adequately accommodated for so that we can live comfortably and thrive.
Please keep ableism and eugenics out of spiritual teachings but also out of your inner talk. It does you no good to think of parts of yourself as bad (being punished) in the same way toxic religions and capitalism tell you about these things. “You’re disabled because you sinned” and “you’re not disabled, you’re lazy” are ways we’re taught that disabled people did it to themselves and don’t deserve compassion, much less assistance getting medical care or basic needs met.
Also no shade but when astrologers who study/teach Chiron speak this way I’m like. What.

YOOOO
I just watched Netflix's Wednesday and while the parental dynamics and certain other things this iteration decided to do characterization wise irked and disturbed me, I still greatly enjoyed it.
Totally want that dress she wore to the dance.
Also! Black mermaid! 😆 Well, siren.
But still!
Was excited about that since I developed a desire for black fantasy/mythical beings years ago.

Anyway it's a fun who-done-it show and I'm looking forward to more.
Each episode is almost an hour long...like Doctor Who!!
Maybe it'll have good rewatchability too?

Eugene HC/Lore Ramble-post
-deep breath- His full name is Eugene “Rocky” Koal Bronco
He’s the nephew of Gonzo, who took care of him as a kid. Gonzo has kids of his own, Eugene’s cousins, Melba and Ozzie. (Humanized AU Specifically IG?) Due to being raised by his uncle in Australia, he has a bit of the accent. But he’s actually half Puerto Rican on his father’s side. His mother was from Australia though (and was Gonzo’s sister.) He hasn’t touched any of those roots though due to losing his parents, sadly. He did pick up his dad’s aesthetic though.  He is actually a really big caregiver no thanks to a lot of stuff happening in his childhood. Gonzo took him in after the tragic and sudden death of both his sister and his brother-in-law, but not long too terribly long after that his own wife ended up passing away due to underlining illness reasons. (Ozzie has some of the hereditary illnesses from his mom, so he’s kept an eye on but he’s doing relatively well dw /lh) He gained a special interest in music and dedicated his time attempting to learn how to play every instrument he could - though his pride and joy to do is playing guitar. He just likes the bragging rights that he can play a lot of instruments due to his fixation.  He loves all types of music, all types. Music makes him very stimmy and is practically his whole life. He’s a nerd like that. Catch is, he has no idea how to read music notes.  Ironically, he still passed through college just fine somehow.  He was accepted into college and that is where he meets his main friend group.  Just before enrolling for the year, he met Bud while as a club to celebrate being accepted. Bud, however, was there to celebrate his own birthday. But was being an awkward wallflower, due to being with his brother’s a majority of the time. (That’s a separate story though. ;) ) (Side note: For the sake of reference, they’re 21 here. Eugene is 21, Bud is just turning 21. Let’s say, if this was based on real life time - this would be 2010. 12 years ago--) The two became very close friends almost instantly and only *later* realized they’d be going to the same college with roughly the same major. So, they agreed to be roommates, bunking with an older couple going back to college and having their own living courters rather than a dorm. (This would be Elise and Barold.)  The other people they met in college are Shep, Kyle, Cherry, Lopez, and Peewee - and though he separates himself from the group and is a bit older, Wolfgang is still included sometimes. /t Shep was a solo artist, as was Kyle. Cherry, Lopez, and Peewee had their own band. And Eugene and Bud were on the build of making a band - but really all it was was Eugene and Bud agreeing to make music together. And sometimes their side roomies, Barold and Elise, would chime in to help. (They were nice. Supportive. It was only fair lol)  The group were really close and good friends. Going to band battles together, pretending to be rivals, and supporting each other in contests and concerts they’d have to perform. It was all very sweet.  Eventually, during one contest - in which Eugene’s “band” didn’t exactly end up winning but they had fun regardless, while packing up they’re bummed by K.K. Slider himself.  He insists he likes their passion and wanted to do a cover of their song featuring them and turn it into an album. Being dorky college kids just excited K.K. liked their energy, of course they agree. (-holds up K.K. Ska- this is the birth of this) Soon after that was graduation time - and Eugene had plans to travel the world. Leaving all this behind and making something of himself on his own, even though he hated the concept of being alone and restarting. Everything he’s ever known has been here, especially his family. But he wanted to at least try to take a step out there, and he’d always be welcomed back.  To his surprise, Bud charged to travel with him. Making arrangements with his family, another thing that was hard for Bud to let go - he insisted he’d go with Eugene out in the world. So... it was the two of them, traveling to new places and continuing to be really close friends.  That is until the third act breakup scene, (I am so sorry), where Eugene started to let things get to his head. He became really selfish and cocky, very unlike him - what with his newfound glory and immediately getting a girlfriend he just met. (Which backfired, mind you.) He started treated Bud like he was weighing him down, and Bud was really hurt by it. Eventually Bud confronted him about his attitude, as well as concerns about his girlfriend only caring about him if he has this air about him. Which wasn’t truly him, not like Bud had known. Of course, it caused a whole fight. Eugene at the time was heavily in denial he’d done anything wrong and blamed Bud for everything, even accusing him of jealousy. He went on a rant about how he’s evolving and growing and how Bud needs to learn how to do that to, it’s “what the trip was for.” And that if Bud didn’t like the new him, he didn’t need him anymore.  And as much as it broke Bud to do it, Bud agreed that maybe they didn’t need each other anymore. And started to ghost him. (It was extremely difficult, due to Bud being a naturally forgiving person who’s very hard to make angry tbh. he doesn’t like feeling upset.)  But naturally this is the part where we learn Bud was right about everything - and Eugene gets dumped due to his girlfriend only fancying him for gains or the fact he would be famous. He’s actually a bit of a nobody, and actually hated the drama that came with genuinely being popular - he backed out of the idea of becoming some famous well-known musician and was never going to become that. It caused her to bail, learning he won’t “provide for her like she needs.” She immediately treated him like she didn’t know him, either. Immediately crying wolf if he attempted to further communicate with her about things - causing publicity stunts and such, and even further solidifying Eugene did NOT want this life for himself.  He breaks down a bit and gets a pep talk from Gonzo, who’s extremely supportive and caring for him - and can also be blunt when he needs to hear things. If he was the asshole, Gonzo would outright say it. And he appreciated that. As he should have appreciated when Bud said it too.  He attempts to make up with Bud, which takes a few more days of silence between the two of them but Bud agrees to forgive him. But on the other hand, he had decided to go ahead and go through with the plan of leaving Eugene behind. Going somewhere on his own, making new friends - learning the two can’t be tied together at the hip anymore.  And as painful as it was, Eugene had to accept that too.  Bud officially moves away, and Eugene is alone again.  Thankfully due to his small interest in mechanic work, he had a small business going about that instead. Again, popular dramatic music life just wasn’t for him. He settled in a place where he’d repair people’s vehicles - in his own home-built shop, even.  This is how he ends up meeting Olaf, who needed his car repaired rather quickly...  But I think that’s enough rambling for now, and that he and Olaf’s story can be told a little later. ;) -exhausted exhale-

Feelings at the moment:
Frustration, irritation, sadness, disappointment, anger, tiredness, powerlessness, loneliness
Well Done:
In the morning, when I recorded a good morning video for the Voice training, I shared with people my musings about the historical bases of the upcoming holiday. Usually I'm very anxious about revealing my political interests to people, but that's me anyway, so I'm showing myself.
To better:
In the evening, I basically enforced early finishing of the workday (as a national calendar dictates). There came a girl and started to plead to me to print some stuff. I tried to push her away, but then another one entered and started to beg for printing. I felt that I couldn't decline them. In a second I felt a rush of fury towards them, myself, world and whatever else. But I stayed automatically polite. The minutes after the workday ends, I feel like any action is abuse towards myself, by myself. So I shall stand taller and refuse easier, even to nice looking girls. I have a right to live my own life and not to serve anyone in need.
Delights:
"Humbug" album by Arctic Monkeys
Decent peanut cake.
Reading "Onegin" for the Voice training.

What i've been learning thru my research is that Lawn Culture and laws against "weeds" in America are deeply connected to anxieties about "undesirable" people.
I read this essay called "Controlling the Weed Nuisance in Turn-of-the-century American Cities" by Zachary J. S. Falck and it discusses how the late 1800's and early 1900's created ideal habitats for weeds with urban expansion, railroads, the colonization of more territory, and the like.
Around this time, laws requiring the destruction of "weeds" were passed in many American cities. These weedy plants were viewed as "filth" and literally disease-causing—in the 1880's in St. Louis, a newspaper reported that weeds infected school children with typhoid, diphtheria, and scarlet fever.
Weeds were also seen as "conducive to immorality" by promoting the presence of "tramps and idlers." People thought wild growing plants would "shelter" threatening criminals. Weeds were heavily associated with poverty and immortality. Panic about them spiked strongly after malaria and typhoid outbreaks.
To make things even wilder, one of the main weeds the legal turmoil and public anxiety centered upon was actually the sunflower. Milkweed was also a major "undesirable" weed and a major target of laws mandating the destruction of weeds.
The major explosion in weed-control law being put forth and enforced happened around 1905-1910. And I formed a hypothesis—I had this abrupt remembrance of something I studied in a history class in college. I thought to myself, I bet this coincides with a major wave of immigration to the USA.
Bingo. 1907 was the peak of European immigration. We must keep in mind that these people were not "white" in the exact way that is recognized today. From what I remember from my history classes, Eastern European people were very much feared as criminals and potential communists. Wikipedia elaborates that the Immigration Act of 1924 was meant to restrict Jewish, Slavic, and Italian people from entering the country, and that the major wave of immigration among them began in the 1890s. Almost perfectly coinciding with the "weed nuisance" panic. (The Immigration Act of 1917 also banned intellectually disabled people, gay people, anarchists, and people from Asia, except for Chinese people...who were only excluded because they were already banned since 1880.)
From this evidence, I would guess that our aesthetics and views about "weeds" emerged from the convergence of two things:
First, we were obliterating native ecosystems by colonizing them and violently displacing their caretakers, then running roughshod over them with poorly informed agricultural and horticultural techniques, as well as constructing lots of cities and railroads, creating the ideal circumstances for weeds.
Second, lots of immigrants were entering the country, and xenophobia and racism lent itself to fears of "criminals" "tramps" and other "undesirable" people, leading to a desire to forcefully impose order and push out the "Other." I am not inventing a connection—undesirable people and undesirable weeds were frequently compared in these times.
And this was at the very beginnings of the eugenics movement, wherein supposedly "inferior" and poor or racialized people were described in a manner much the same as "weeds," particularly supposedly "breeding" much faster than other people.
There is another connection that the essay doesn't bring up, but that is very clear to me. Weeds are in fact plants of the poor and of immigrants, because they are often medicinal and food plants for people on the margins, hanging out around human habitation like semi-domesticated cats around granaries in the ancient Near East.
My Appalachian ancestors ate pokeweed, Phytolacca americana. The plant is toxic, but poor people in the South would gather the plant's young leaves and boil them three times to get the poison out, then eat them as "poke salad." Pokeweed is a weed that grows readily on roadsides and in vacant lots.
In some parts of the world, it is grown as an ornamental plant for its huge, tropical-looking leaves and magenta stems. But my mom hates the stuff. "Cut that down," she says, "it makes us look like rednecks."

Ok but Dead Fast: Night of the Living (2002) has no business being considered the worst Dead Fast movie when the MCU (Murder Cinematic Universe) not only retconned his origin story to make him a virus zombie rather than a curse zombie (which throws off his entire arc about being something more than his deeds!) AND made him be allied with B.L.I.G.H.T. of all organizations because Like say what you will about NOTL and the forced heterosexual romantic plot but at least 1) it gets what makes Dead Fast a hero and 2) GIVES HIS LOVE INTEREST A PERSONALITY AND SOMETHING TO DO

Also they made the villain Dr. Igorable's motivations so laughable like..... so his wife got turned into a zombie and he wants to cure her? Ok? Did she ask for it? I am not sure if I'm overstepping here but, furthermore, the addition of Pendulum to the movie was unnecesary. Stereotyping shapeshifters as untrustworthy and traitorous is something of a past era. Either leave the character behind, or change it entirely.

Three Guys On A Sofa: Try Guys, Watcher, Values, and Cognitive Dissonance
Listen, as someone who has no real emotional investment in Watcher but all the emotional investment in the last "three guys on the sofa" internet scandal (Try Guys were MY long-standing Buzzfeed emotional support dude-group), what has kind of amazed me is the difference in reaction to the two scandals.
Watcher's video was built up for a week as a positive announcement but immediately cratered their reputation, revealed the cracks in their handling of business/lack of forethought in ALL THREE FOUNDERS, and, thanks to them not responding quickly to fan reactions, is now cementing their negative perception in a way they might never recover from.
On the other hand, the Try Guys' video was possibly one of the best apology videos/reactions to scandal I've ever seen. It seemed like a quick response to the breaking scandal but was well-thought out (and as was discussed in podcasts, had been extensively thought-out/planned for at least a month, with all three of the remaining Try Guys heavily invested in the investigation/handling of the problem), reinforced audience sympathies because the problem had been dealt with, and most importantly reinforced the idea that the audience's faith in the remaining Try Guys was warranted.
The Watcher video revealed the massive gap between the ideals that the Watcher Guys (all three of them) had purported to hold for years (authenticity, "eat the rich," a strong personal/parasocial connection to their audience) and what was being executed in practice, while the Try Guys' video showed that the ideals that Keith, Eugene, and Zach had held (non-toxic masculinity, respect for women, healthy working environments, a strong passion/belief in supporting their staff) still seemed as genuine as can be.
TLDR; I think that the Try Guys were able to recover from the Ned of it all in a way that Watcher won't be able to because while their apology video showed quick action and reinforced/proved that they stood by the same values they'd always had, Watcher's video and fan response has only shown that they don't seem to hold the values THEY preach, fundamentally betraying their audience.

Spiritual Bypassing
With the advent of social media and witchcraft becoming increasingly popular within recent years, spiritual bypassing is a highly important topic of discussion.
For those new to the craft and just starting out, researching and cross referencing topics is sometimes a daunting task. Leading them to look up to those with more experience as beacons of information and wisdom, which unfortunately can lead to spiritual bypassing.
However, this isn't the only instance we see spiritual bypassing appear- many people often promote incredibly dangerous and sometimes deadly tips or information which can lead to all sorts of harm and damage to individuals and communities.
-------------------------------------
What is spiritual bypassing?
Spiritual bypassing is the "tendency to use spiritual ideas and practices to sidestep or avoid facing unresolved emotional issues, psychological wounds, and unfinished developmental tasks" (John Welwood,. 1980). In other words, to avoid or ignore issues in favour of using spiritual practices to "heal" them. A very common example of this is, "stop taking your medication it lowers your vibration".
-------------------------------------
We commonly see this in the new age 'love n light' community, however, no spiritual community is exempt from this. You will often see people recommend the use of crystals and spellwork to "cure" mental health conditions such as anxiety or depression. Or telling others that their medical treatments such as medications will lower their vibration and recommend an alternative (and highly dangerous) treatment instead.
While witchcraft and spirituality can be an important aspect of a person's life, it should not replace a medical professionals advice or medical treatment in any way. Not only is spiritual bypassing dangerous, but it often veers into eugenics (an example being, "I'm not autistic, I'm a starseed).
-------------------------------------
So, if you're a beginner what should you look out for?
Well, here's a small list-
- telling you that medical treatment effects your 'vibration'
- that your medical/mental conditions can be 'cured' by cleansing
- telling you that things should be "positive vibes only"
- using concepts such as starseeds and indigo children as a justification for neurodivergency (starseeds and indigo children stem from ableism)
- xxxxx is a substitute for therapy
- that your disability is because you are "out of alignment"
- that traumatic experiences are because they are a "learning experience" from God
- that negative experiences are due to "karma"
- promoting toxic positivity to overcome negative feels
And there are many more.
