I just found your blog and I am absolutely enamored by all these designs! I did have a quick question though

I'd love to one day visit Japan, and I love the idea of attending a festival in a rented yukata. However, I'm concerned about if I could wear one or not due to the sleeves. I'm disabled and get around using forearm crutches, and have difficulty fitting larger sleeves in them.

I guess I was just curious about if either the sleeves could easily be pulled back to my elbows, or if maybe there are yukata with shorter sleeves (I've never seen them myself at least.)

As for your question, there is a fantastic way to accomodate your crutches: tasuki 襷 sleeves holders. Those are cord used for holding up sleeves out of the way (when doing chores, physical/messy activity, etc).

You can see below how tasuki are tied: basically think of an ∞ with the crossing on your back and the loop up front gathering up sleeves on your sides:

Depending on your mobility, you can pre-knot the cord beforehand then slip it around your body.

The "right" way of doing it is this one:

Though to be honest, most people do like this and call it a day xD:

I am not sure how your mobility is so I'll also add other options to mix and match in order to nicely enjoy summer festivals in kimono attire:

Happi 法被 (festival coat): if you don't feel confortable strolling all day/night in yukata (the tighness of around your legs might be cumbersome), wearing a coat like those over your "normal" clothes is a good option to still be in festival mood :) Some are sleeveless, some have tube sleeves, and if not pair them with tasuki sleeves holder and you'll be good to go!

Nibushiki kimono 二部式着物 / nibushiki yukata 二部式浴衣 (two parts kimono/yukata): exactly what it says on the lid, those are kimono/yukata tailored in two parts, a skirt and a top one. Those might be harder to find in rentals, but have the convenience of being super easy to put on while being less prone to unraveling :) The two parts are also gentler on the figure as you can more easily adapt tighness etc. If you're are able to shop for a yukata beforehand, altering is pretty easy: chop in two, add ties and you're ready to get dressed ;)

Tsuke obi 作り帯 (two parts belt): in the same spirit as above, those are pre-tied obi belt, with a wrap-around part and a knot part. They are super common for children, but also exist for adult. Altering a pre owned obi is also super easy, see for example this past note (for nagoya obi styled taiko knot).

Yukata can be worn with hanhaba obi (half width belt), heko obi (soft belt), or kaku obi ("men" belt). Heko obi would be my recommendation as those are unisex, comfortable, and suuuuper easy to tie.

If you want to try hanhaba or kaku, I'd advise for karuta musubi, a flat, sturdy, and unisex knot pretty easy to tie.

Yes, there is hanfu suitable for country folk who have to work in the fields and tend animals. Historically, such people would have worn a type of unisex hanfu called 裋褐/shuhe. Shuhe goes by a few other names, including 短打/duanda, 短褐/duanhe, and 竖褐/shuhe. They all refer to a two-piece set of attire composed of a cross-collar top that extends to the knees, coupled with tied trousers. Both pieces were typically made out of coarse cloth. It is the basis of almost all underclothing, usually the clothing worn under armor, and the casual outfit of commoners and laborers (x). This outfit was generally worn by people doing manual labor, such as farm work, and by martial artists (x).

On abarkak, Basque traditional shoes

Like many things in Basque culture, abarkak have their origin in shepherding.

They're made with a single piece of soft leather and has a trapezoidal shape. Its wider parallel side is folded in half and sewn with a thread. Along the two converging edges, holes are made through which a leather strap passes, and by tightening or loosening it, the leather - with more or fewer folds - adjusts to the size of the foot.

In the 1920s and 1930s, leather abarkak were gradually replaced by rubber ones. They used to put studs or nails on the bottom of the sole to the leather shoes and also the rubber ones so that they would not slip. They were more durable and lasted for years.

Traditional leather abarkak in brown, and rubber ones in black.

They're unisex, and can be tied low (traditionally for men)

or high (traditionally for women)

and they're ever present in Basque folklore and culture, such as in dancing:

so the only people they could ever learn any concept of gender from is Jango himself, the trainers, and eventually Shaak Ti and the other jedi

but I don't think any of the first two ever bothered, and the jedi probably encouraged them to pick whatever the hell they like

some of them feel complete with being perceived as a male, some were just called 'he' and rolled with it even if they don't have any strong connection to the pronouns, some prefer female pronouns, some prefer all, none etc. they just- they don't have any initial concept of gender so they don't have any qualms about which one they identify as, if they even identify as one

they call each other brothers as a collective term, but it's not anything gendered, in fact I think they called themselves vode first and once they were deployed they started also using one of the translations of it to basic (maybe because they are biological males, maybe not) since the mandoa word is completely unisex and is used as brother and sister too

Unfortunately, you had a crush.

A big one.

The kind that left your palms sweaty and your tongue tied. No matter how many times you tried to get words to leave your mouth, you couldn’t manage it. You would start to stumble, clumsily making your way through the conversation with the grace of a drunk chicken. With a heavy sigh, you splashed a handful of water onto your face to try and steady yourself. All you did was make yourself feel wet and uncomfortable.

It wasn’t fair. How could anyone be so handsome? With his pink hair and cute glasses, you were sure that Koby was your dream man, and you going to blow it. No matter how hard you tried, you couldn’t confess. The last time you tried, you took too long and had to watch helplessly as Koby apologized and ran off to perform his duties. At this rate, someone far bolder than you would come snatch him up. Where would you be then? Alone and eating ice cream in your bunk, that was where.

Fraternization between ranks was not encouraged, but you couldn’t take it anymore. You had to confess even if it killed you, and the only way you would succeed was with practice. You thought of it like training. With each pushup, you would get stronger. With each word, you would get bolder. Clearing your throat, you stared into the mirror of the empty unisex bathroom.

“Hi Koby, um…” You trailed off. Sweat dripped down the side of your face and your cheeks warmed as you practiced your confession. This was too hard. If you couldn’t confess to your reflection, how could you confess to Koby? He was a captain and a hero, for christ’s sake! You didn’t have a snowball's chance in hell if you couldn’t even talk to a mirror. You ran your hands down your face with a sigh. It wasn’t like you to give up so easily. “Captain Koby, I have something to tell you.”

“You do?”

You let out a yelp, whipping around to stare at the figure standing in the doorway. Koby’s head was tilted slightly, making him look like a puppy dog. A strand of pink hair fell loose and brushed against his nose. He furrowed his eyebrows and tucked it back behind his bandana.

“W-What are you doing here,” You stammered.

Koby flushed, a pretty pink tinge coloring his cheeks. “Well, it is a restroom.” Eager to change the subject, he coughed into his fist and turned his full attention onto you. “You had something to tell me?”

“No!” The urge to dip into a stall and hide was growing stronger by the second. Somehow, you managed to stay strong and meet Koby’s gaze. “You were hearing things. I think there’s something wrong with the pipes.”

Koby frowned. “That’s odd, they just remodeled this side of the base a year ago. I hope nothing is seriously wrong. Can you show me where any of the weird sounds were coming from.”

“Yes, sir.”

He flushed bright red. “You don’t have to call me that, you know? I’d prefer it if you called me by my name.”

“Sorry, Koby.” You turned and searched the bathroom for signs of disrepair you could exploit. A crack in the wall, a loose knob in one of the sinks, anything to get his attention off of you. “Uhhhh…”

“Everything looks fine in here, maybe I really was hearing things,” Koby laughed, close enough to you that you could feel his breath ghost across the back of your neck. He seemed to notice how close he was to you, and stumbled back a few paces with a flustered expression.

“Sorry,” You both said at the same time.

The two of you fell into an awkward silence.

“Well-” You started.

“I-” Koby interrupted.

He motioned at you. “You go first.”

“No, you go.” With an insistent wave of your hand, you watched the marine captain scuff his shoe against the tile.

“I only wanted to say, um, I like what you did with your hair. It’s very nice.”

A fluttery feeling welled in your chest as a bright grin bloomed across your face. Koby stared at your expression, almost dumbstruck, as a pink dusting spread across his cheeks. He looked perfect like that, it made you remember why you were in the bathroom in the first place. Your throat bobbed, and the butterflies were quickly stifled by awkward slime.

“Actually, there is something I wanted to tell you.”

A hopeful gleam flickered in Koby’s eye, only to be snuffed out and replaced with something unreadable. He nodded at you, hands firmly behind his back. “You can tell me anything, Y/N.”

“Right, right.” Swallowing hard, you tried to think of where to start. There was a lot about Koby you appreciated. His appearance, the way he took care of his body, the way his flush matched the color of his hair. His personality, however, was what truly drew you in. Koby was kind and respectful, someone you could rely on no matter what. You trusted him more than anyone you had ever met. All that in mind, the only thing you could think to say was: “Your face is nice.”

It felt like you were dunked in magma, and for a moment, you were worried Fleet Admiral Sakazuki had found his way into the bathroom. Koby hadn’t fared much better. He blushed from the roots of his hair down the collar of his uniform.

“O-Oh,” He said.

As if things couldn’t get worse, you decided now was the time to introduce your foot to your mouth. “Not that the rest of you isn’t nice. You’re very attractive, and kind of buff. You have a total sleeper build. I can’t believe you don’t have your own secret fan club. And you’re so nice too. You’re the kindest person I’ve ever met, and everyday I wonder what I’ve done to deserve having you in my life.”

It was a flood. Absolute word vomit, and you couldn’t stop it now that it started. You wished you were back to a few minutes ago when you could barely choke out a confession. Now, all you were doing was making an ass of yourself. Koby looked absolutely confused, his jaw hanging loose and eyes wide.

“What?”

“I can’t stop talking!” You gripped your head in your hands. “Koby, you have to punch me or I’ll never shut up. Please, make me shut up.”

“I’m not going to punch you!” He exclaimed. Koby fidgeted with a strand of hair before he met your eyes with an intense look. “I like you too.”

You blinked. “No way.”

“Yes way! I mean it! I’ve liked you for the longest time, only I didn’t think I had a chance.”

Shocked, you shook your head in an attempt to knock sense into yourself. “Me too! I mean, you’re so much cooler than me. I didn’t think I had a chance with you at all.”

Koby laughed, a little stilted as he ran his hands down the front of his uniform. “Well, you do. If you want it, I mean.”

“I do. I do want it.” You tried to keep your focus on Koby, but when he looked so flustered, it was hard to keep your composure. “So… what now?”

“I take you on a date. Tonight? Eight o’ clock?”

“R-Right. Sounds good to me.”

With that, you placed a shaky peck on his cheek, enjoying the giggle that tumbled from his lips.

A Very Classy Night

It’s such a beautiful, iconic, warm and sexy New York night that they have to take advantage of it. 

They’re dressed up, having left a fancy party thrown by or for a big donor at Chrissy’s dance school. It was in a fancy apartment on fifth avenue. Champagne, h’ors d’overs (Chrissy’s favorite food), beautiful art in a gorgeous, million-billion dollar apartment and an open bar. 

Super classy.

Eddie was on his best behavior, he charmed all the rich wives and their staff. He meticulously pressed his suit and bought a tie with matching pocket square. He wore his pointy boots and his hair neatly tied at his nape. Chrissy thinks he’s so handsome she could die. 

They bounce the classy party before everyone gets too drunk and things get inappropriate (Eddie thinks there’s a very sexual vibe between donors and dancers. Like, they throw money and you dance for them. Chilling.)

They’re not ready for this night to end, though! They have to hit as many bars as possible because they look and feel so cute. They want to get drunk and make out at a bar, then they want to go home, get stoned and make out some more.

A perfect Saturday night. 

So Eddie’s twirling Chrissy as they walk down Fifth Avenue and they find themselves in front of the Plaza Hotel. 

There’s fancy people coming in and out and they all look like they’ve been partying. Must be a wedding. It is a Saturday in June, after all. 

Hmmmm. 

It takes very little to persuade Chrissy to try to sneak into this fancy wedding. 

They enter the hotel from a little used side door, feeling like spies. Chrissy is giggling so hard it makes Eddie get the giggles and they have to take some circular breaths to calm down. They put Eddie’s jacket on Chrissy, she holds her heels. Eddie tucks his hair into his popped (ugh) collar and he puts on his sunglasses for extra asshole vibes.

They stumble over, pretending to be drunk yuppies, like they’ve been at this party for hours. There’s no one to check them so they walk in with purpose to the bar. 

The room is massive and there’s so many people…

This could be fun.

They grab two passed champagne flutes and sip nervously. 

No one is looking at them. 

The coast…is clear? 

They nibble on some canapés.

They hit the dance floor when the band starts up on some Temptations. 

They eat a couple of eclairs from the Viennese table.

This might actually work!

They’re back at the bar when one of the bridesmaids approaches them. 

Uh oh.

“Great party right!” Chrissy chirps.

“Totally,” says bridesmaid “Who are you with?”

Oh NO.

“Michael!” Eddie croaks. “We’re Michael’s kids!”

“Michael who?”

“Michael Michael!”

Chrissy acts fast.

“He’s right over there!” she points to the far side of the room.

The bridesmaid looks over-

-THEN BITCH THEY ARE RUNNING-

Ok, not running, running, more like scooting away at a fast clip.

They zip down some halls and miraculously find a unisex bathroom to hide in.

Chrissy and Eddie are laughing and trembling so hard, oh my god. 

They wait until they’re sure no one has followed them or called the cops or whatever rich people would do to two scalawags such as them. 

Eventually they slide out and slink onto 58th street where they indulge in a cab to 13th street to stop at the Pony Keg because Eddie used to work there and drinks for (mostly) free.

I was thinking of sharing custom versions of my default replacement Unisex Uniforms. It would work so well as a formal outfit too. So when @lilsisterg asked me about that, I figured they might as well get their own post. And why not expand the color options while I was at it?

I added the rest of @its-adrienpastel's Mitch Sweater colors, plus black and white, to bring the total to 15. I recolored the ties on most of them. Pants, socks, and shoes are coordinated. Texture files have color names (based on the sweaters), not numbers, which is rare for me.

Hello, I have a weird question but maybe you can answer it. When I was a teenager I was gifted a yukata and taught to tie the obi to make it look like a bow. That was cute then, but now that I'm in my mid 30s I wonder if this is still appropriate. Are there other ways to tie the obi of a yukata that are maybe a bit more mature ? I love wearing my yukata, but I'm starting to get self-conscious about maybe being too old for that… (I only wear it for matsuri in Japan so it's not like it's often, but it makes me even more self-conscious because I am very clearly not Japanese so I don't want to look ridiculous.) Thank you !

Hi fellow mid-30's kimono wearer :D It's true some styles can feel a bit weird depending on ages.

Though nothing truly forbids you to keep wearing bunko musubi, if you don't feel confortable with a bow knot or its variations (for ex. this one or this one?), don't despair! there are many (like MANY) other knots which would work with your age and "status" :D

If you wish for something classical, I'd recommend:

Kai no kuchi musubi (clam mouth knot) - a super all purpose knot, worn by women and men alike. It's been around for ages and never went out of style!

Ronin musubi (ronin knot) or katabasami - unisex knots that have been around for a long time too, pretty sturdy and chic.

Karuta musubi (card knot) - easy to tie and quite flat so perfect if you have to ride a car/train or sit on Western chairs.

Taiko musubi (drum knot) or tsunodashi musubi (also called Ginza musubi) - you can fake those ones (usually tied with wider obi) with a hanhaba obi, see examples here and here.

More on the novelty side :

Kamifusen musubi (paper balloon knot) - a more whimsical knot but could still work depending on your style. It asks for preparation but it's very cute :)

Neko mimi musubi (cat ears knot) - there are many variations, with or without hanhaba obi - look at this one for ex

Not-tied obi, a super modern way of wearing obi. Ayaaya has a lot a those, check for example this one and look at her socials for more (especially "frilly" variations)

Any variations of what I call the "waterfall" musubi, where obi ends are elegantly arranged thanks to elastique belts. It's super fashionable atm, see it shown step by step on Billy Matsunaga's channel.

Why would transition save them?: "Well. WELL. Was this an undertaking of an age. First of all, we have the name situation. First, both her Japanese name, Suguri, and their English name, Kieran, are gender neutral names, with her Japanese name actually being the feminine/unisex for of the name, which uses the kanji for "plum", and their English name leaning more masculine in terms of popularity. In addition, her names in other languages tend to lean more neutral-feminine; their German name is Jo, a popular unisex name that brings to mind the ambiguously nonbinary and/or lesbian coded character Jo March from Little Women, her Spanish name is Cass, a name frequently associated with female characters and has ties to the name "Cassandra", with their French, Italian, Korean, and Mandarin and Cantonese Chinese names leaning more towards the popular, stereotypically-associated-with-nonbinary-people noun names. In addition, Carmine, her sibling (who I will get to in another post) calls them by the feminine nickname "Kiki", which is equally feminine in the Japanese, French, and Italian languages: "Sugu," "Kass", and "Riri". Now, onto the story. Kieran's dilemma starts in that they very, almost obsessively, admire the ogre in the legend of the Teal Mask. The ogre, Ogerpon, also coincidentally happens to always be female, by the way. Kieran admires Ogerpon for being strong, and being herself, and always being able to stand tall even when people misunderstand her, which is a common trans narrative as it is. And for Kieran to relate to a transfeminine coded narrative, where someone seemingly monstrous and scary is actually a sweet girl who doesn't want to hurt anyone and is misunderstood by all, is very significant for their gender. This obsession with Ogerpon affects her in multiple ways, and it distresses them to the point that when the main protagonist catches her at the end of the DLC, she drastically changes for the worse, adopting a toxically masculine persona of anger, rage and power to "become stronger", "fit in", "be tougher", so they wouldn't get hurt again. I personally think this is a heavy transfeminine nonbinary coded narrative, enough that I consider narratives like these to be integral to my other CAMAB nonbinary headcanons, such as Colonel.EXE from Megaman Battle Network and Hugo from Street Fighter (both of whom I will discuss in other mod posts). In short, I think if she decided to explore their gender and eventually figure out they were on the feminine and gender neutral spectrums of nonbinary gender, she would probably feel a lot better about themself and wouldn't have to force herself to be toxically masculine and cruel to "be strong."--mod @sunkern-plus
