so im sure everyones fully well aware of the magic 8 ball site fob is using to promote a contest to win some tickets to see them in nashville. the little 8ball widget theyve got in browser is also modeled on the physical 8ball that they had in the vip merch packages for tourdust's first leg, which is cool! but of particular note is the way that, to fill out the contest form, you have to pick your favorite fall out boy songs. and the sheer breadth of what is allowed is...interesting? it's not cohesive by any means, but it is really wild the selection of songs they have here because not all of them are fob songs. in fact, quite a few of them aren't.

i went directly to the source code and got a full list of all possible songs that you could input (which you can check for yourself by right-clicking and selecting "view source"). i'm going to list them here for archival purposes, with a few notes/explanations cause some of these are WILD.

Democratizing Media

Alright, one thing first: When politicians speak about "democratizing media" they usually mean something else then what scientist say, when they use those words. Politicians mostly mean something along the lines of "media should say what I want instead being controlled by some coorporation, because like I am elected, right?" Meanwhile scientist mean something else.

You see, before the internet became easily accessible for most people, the only way to access media was through certain outlets. TV stations, the cinema, some publishers and some record lables.

Yes, sure. Technically self-publishing was a thing even back then, but without the ease of the internet... How were you to market your own book or comic? And self-made music usually just circulated on copied and copied again casette tapes.

Usually, if you wanted to create media that actually people would see, you had to go through a big company. And those companies could very much decide who got to make movies and tv, who got to publish music or books or comics. Not only where those decisions controlled by capitalist interest, but also by nepotism and cultural biases, given that a lot of the people making those decisions where (and still are to these days) white, cis, abled men.

But when the internet came around things changed. Because suddenly everyone had a way easier time in getting their stuff out there. Pretty early on there were websites where people could just publish their stories and comics online. Either free and hosted by some other website or paid on their own site. Which was pretty revolutionary, especially as suddenly ideas that had been ignored could reach a new audience.

Voices, that by news media and such had been ignored so far - voices of women and marginalized folks - could suddenly broadcast over all sorts of channels.

And yes, you could also just publish your music and what not online, could also do your own research and offer it to the world and could actually get heard.

Now, we all know that this came with ups and downs. Because while finally marginalized people were heard like this, it also gave a bigger platform to some fringe conspiracy groups and the like. But at least there was a chance to get your stuff out there.

Social media websites and the like played a big role in this. Especially Youtube, of course, but other sites, too........ which of course brings me to the problem. Or rather to the question: "Is media democratized right now?"

Because it isn't, of course.

Right now we have these chokepoints, where you kinda are forced to push whatever you create through a channel. Sure, you can upload your videos on your own server, but probably nobody will see them. They need to be on youtube. Just like your music now needs to be on spotify and itunes. And if you self-publish a book, it kinda needs to be available on amazon or you won't sell shit. And if you have your own little blog and do not promote it on social media (or have it not integrated on a blogging platform such as tumblr) it will not be seen.

And this brings two issues with it (well, actually three). For one, as private companies those sides are able to censor you in any way they want to. They decide you cannot say the word "queer" anymore? Welp, no more talking about queer issues for you. And because they are a private company nobody can do much against it. Like with the tumblr purge. No more "female presenting nipples" for you.

The next issue is closely related: The companies in question want to make money. This they do mostly through advertisement and maybe subscriptions. Hence their goal is to keep you interacting with their website for a long while. And thus they have algorithms that decide what content you see - and hence if the content decides that something you do is not worth it or will get the wrong kind of attention... Well, nobody will get it shown. On a lot of social media we see, for example, that the negative content gets shown to more people. So writing about positive stuff does often not get you seen. (Which is why algorithms are bad. Don't fucking build your social media websites around a fucking algorithm.)

And lastly: A lot of media additionally to all of that also uses a system of partly manual currated. This is true for Netflix, who obviously want to make sure that the front page does show the stuff they either paid a lot of money for or that they produced themselves. Like, there is an infinity of great indie movies on Netflix, but if you do not know it is there, you will not see it. Same goes for a lot of Indie Games on Steam, that just go unnoticed, because they do not appear anywhere near the front page and just happen to go overlooked by folks. And in the end the big studios obviously have the money to get their games on the front page. Same with books on amazon, where just the difference in marketing budget makes sure, that certain books will end up front.

So, why am I telling all of that?

Because we still do have the tool. We can make a free, democratic internet like that. Where we do not have censorship (please note: banning people for saying hateful shit is actually not censorship, so yeah, ban them nazis). Where we do not have fucking algorithms. And where just everything has the same chance of getting seen.

Like, does not mean that there cannot be any currated lists. Like, those currator pages on steam? Those are fucking great. Lists where everyone just can make those and you can subscribe to their lists. That is amazing. But... you know. Not for the baseline experience, but for what everyone wants their experience to be like.

Just... a thing that bothers me. Based on the stuff I spoke about yesterday.

i thought the bit in blood sanation where daniel doesn't know he can't smoke inside anymore was fascinating - he probably would be a little out of step with the latest tech or human social norms after his mad era! any thoughts on other things he might've missed out/be excited to discover now/miss now that the tech is obsolete or norms changed (like the smoking in diners!)

Oh man, tons of stuff-

-Having to wear your seat belt in the car. I mean he's immortal, there's no way an accident could hurt him that badly unless it was just before dawn. But the stupid dinging of the car alert system has to remind him every single time to buckle up and it's obnoxious (and he just might have paid someone under the table to disable that function in his favorite car, oops)

-The emergence of dating apps/people not really meeting strangers in bars anymore. The first time Daniel and Lestat go out to find a mortal to bring back to Armand for some fun they're both fucking gobsmacked to be given the cold shoulder and told to get on tinder/grindr to find a hookup. Young people go out with their friends or get on the apps to find partners for the night now and for Daniel, someone who spent an entire mortal life chatting up strangers, the loss of cruising/picking up randos as a spur of the moment thing is baffling. (on a positive note, though, sitting with Lestat swiping on mortals becomes a game that takes up the better part of several nights even though they don't go out and meet any of them)

-Jumping from walkmans and casette tapes straight to the era of the mp3? Mindblowing. Daniel never imagined he'd end up with a little computer brick in his pocket with a subscription that allows him to listen to any music, any time. He's still a physical media dude at heart though, and he and Armand have an impressive record collection at Trinity Gate.

-The death of the video rental store. Look, he appreciates being able to get online and find pretty much any movie he wants to watch. But signing up for all these streaming channels is annoying and man, he misses just browsing. Picking up a random film based on a cool cover and interesting blurb on the back? That was always so fun with Armand. They'd come home with a pile of videos, some awesome, some duds, some they never take back to the store and- okay, maybe Daniel isn't that upset the stores died out because a LOT of debt in the form of late fees under his name died with them. But he and Armand still hit used media stores, pick out random old dvds, and go home and play video rental night even today.

-also, because i'm a smut queen and i gotta take this to a place- the sanitization and privatization of sex. In the 70s and 80s you could go watch porn in a theater, you could hit up a peep show. And now it's all online and like you can find a much wider and more specific variety of acts, but it's just another way people have taken their lives and made them more 'indoors' and it surprises him. Not that as a vampire he has need of this media but- he's a curious guy, he likes to keep up with stuff and figure out things Armand could still do to his immortal body, okay?

Hmm, I guess it may vary from person to person, then, or possibly vary depending on whether you've ever worn contacts. The first time I switched to contacts was over 20 years ago so I no longer remember what it was like the first time. I'm guessing contacts may not actually exist in the Nine Houses

Regarding the tech issue - it's not just what they know, but also what's available and what they can afford. Nona/Pyrrha/CamPal are pretty strapped for cash because BOE doesn't give them very much, and the New Rho economy is doing very badly (food and other necessities are expensive and not always available, which suggests supply issues; likewise, the instability of employment and the lack of public services suggests that there are also problems with demand as well).

So there may well be more advanced tech than Cam's casette recorder, but it might not be available in New Rho markets or at prices that they can afford for non-essential items.

I mean, it kind of depends on why there are food shortages. Food shortages could just be the result of war rationing - they said that you could technically acquire poor-quality meat via the black market, which indicates to me that it is available, it's just not allowed to be sold right now, probably due to rationing. Other things than food might be rationed, but I don't think our phones at least are made of things that would likely be rationed in that context, but who knows what kinds of devices they have after 10,000 years, or even what the prices of those things would be. Things that would be considered incredibly high tech much less than even 1000 years ago are now dirt cheap and no one has to worry about being able to afford them (ballpoint pens, for example). After 10,000 years I would expect even more stuff like that

You can technically, right now, still buy cassette tape recorders for relatively cheap, but I have wonder how true that would still be if Earth was destroyed and all of the companies that are still producing cassette tape stuff were destroyed along with it - there's an incentive for companies that have always sold cassette tape stuff to continue doing that, but is there an incentive for brand new companies to start manufacturing and selling cassette tape stuff? It seems like a lot of older technology might get left behind permanently if something like that happened. Also, like, currently a cassette tape recorder is not in fact considered a low cost alternative to using a phone to record something even though it's technically cheaper than a phone, a) because of the general difficulty in getting and maintaining something that can play cassette tapes, and b) because smartphones are a basic necessity now in most places and you need one anyway, and they are all able to record video, so I think you probably wouldn't save money anyway

they write little notes for each other and stick them in the casette’s case <3 and steve keeps every single one, even if it’s as short as “for steve” or “play this when you’re feeling down” or as long as a whole rant about how much they love the band/song, steve keeps them all in his glovebox like the sentimental nerd he is!

also imagine steve giving her a ride home and he asks her to reach into the glovebox for his sunglasses. he has to suspiciously slam it shut before she fully opens it because he remembered that’s his Secret Hiding Place and he’d be too embarrassed for her to find out 😭

when steve first gets the idea to make a mixtape for her as a surprise gift, he has to go into the store to buy some blank tapes. she’s ringing them up for him and she teases him like “who’re you making mixtapes for huh? romancing someone?” and he just becomes a blushing mess because the answer is a resounding yes and that someone is her

it’s so sweet that she pretends she’s never listened to some of the songs steve puts on the mix for her 😭 like the beatles? revolutionary. but it makes him feel so happy it feels like he’s sharing something special with her

they sit on the curb outside their stores during their breaks and she just listens to him talk about the music he likes and she’s truly so interested because she loves seeing how happy it makes him even if it’s stuff she’s all heard before :,) (also them eventually coordinating their breaks when they get closer so they can spend them listening to music and eating in steve’s car together WAHHHHHHHH)

the next time steve comes over to the music store she plays the mixtape he made her over the store speakers!!! he immediately jokes “who made this? his music taste must suck” and she smiles and goes “maybeee but he’s pretty damn sweet so he gets a pass” and he’s just screaming internally

she finally calls him over: “hey, steven?” (i love the idea that the first few times they meet she calls him steven because that’s how eddie introduced him in an attempt to embarrass him 😭 but when they start actually getting closer and eventually dating she still calls him steven from time to time it’s like a jackie and hyde from that 70s show moment) and she asks for a rec, he chooses some random teen movie and she goes “okay good! so, your place or mine?” “what?” “well, i need someone to watch it with, don’t i?” and his heart feels like it’s going to explode fjjdjshshsha

from then on they go to the cinema together and eat up all the newest cheesy teen movies, share popcorn, whisper jokes and try not to scream with laughter in the back of the theatre during late night showings

You and your friends poke around a place you probably shouldn't have gone to. (Not smut)

One of your friends, Kayden , spotted an old hotel like building at the end of the town. One that looks like It's been run down for years with no sign of inhabitants or usage. The windows were boarded up and moss painted the walls. It kinda looked like something out of a horror movie.

That was 2 weeks ago. Now you, Kayden, and your two other friends Addie and Rey decided to go there. And the only thing better than going to an old run down building with possible danger ahead...is going there without telling anyone. After collage, you packed some essentials such as a bottle of water, pbj sandwich some plasters and a small video camera with a single casette tape. To record your findings of course. And waited for your parents to go to bed.

You stood outside the door of the hotel as Kayden rattled the handle, trying to open it. It was almost like someone didn't want you in.. Or someone out. Eventually Kayden and Rey barged through the door just as you finished setting up the camera sliding the tape in.

NAW NAW NAW

The loud siren aleting your presence made your heart skip a beat. Your mates had already ran in knowing its to late to back down now. Possibly already on CCTV. You quickly followed behind heading down the abnormally long corridor into a huge room with cages, chains and a foul stentch everwhere. A hollering scream echoed throughout the room. Everyone stood still, silent, listening. A light screech could be heard and then a slam. The front/ exit door to the hotel had been slammed shut. You all jumped. The door was to heavy to close on Its own. Someone else had closed it.

Scampering foot steps resonated throughout the room. The foot steps sounded struggled, quick and drawing nearer. You hit play on your camera as something or someone ran in your direction. Spitting blood everwhere as it stumbled closer the pained screeching like nails to a chalk board. Battered, bruised with a paper mache mask. You didn't stop to look look very close as you turned straight ahead and spotted a large, very large.. Double door. The gateway to freedom. Your freedom. A smile lit on your face as you slowly walked closer. You stopped dead in your tracks as you heard a slight gurgle. You turned around and saw Kayden on the floor shaking, trying to breathe as blood poured out of her mouth, nose and neck.. Until she stopped.

Looking up, a large man with a black form mask looked back at you. Making eye contact your e/c eyes looked deep into his tar black eyes that shon like onyx. A lob sided smirk appearing on his face as he waltzed closer to you. Smacking the camera out of your hard.

You slowly stepped back. Your step turning into a job and then a sprint to the door. He was hot on your heels as he grabbed you by the waist and smashed you into a wall. And then over a desk. Fisherman's Log: 8/21/2023

Uhh, hi! You probably don't know this, but I've been working on a long retrospective of Pikmin 4 as I play through the game. That was intended to be my first post on this blog. However, I quickly realized something: writing my thoughts about a game without exhaustively journaling my experience while playing it is excruciating. I grew up playing games for an audience, be it my mom watching me play some obscure Wii game, or me liveposting my playthrough of said game to whomever I was talking to on the Warrior Cats forums at the time. So, to remedy this, I'm going to be posting more hands-on "stream of consciousness"-type logs while I'm playing something. And what better to start with than a game I play very regularly: Creatures of the Deep.

A friend put me onto this quirky little game, knowing my propensity for fish and other aquatic creatures. It's been a fun little way to relax throughout my day, while also engaging my completionist hubris. I will confess: the reason I was iffy on posting journal entries alongside retrospectives is because I was feeling a bit of sunk cost fallacy. After all, if I've already completed a good bit of the game, why start now? But I'm nipping that in the bud. So! I may very well make a spreadsheet for this in the future like some sort of deranged lunatic, but for now I just want to play the damn game so have some pictures.

I'm not sure what else to note. That I haven't bought any character customization yet? That all my stats are 1 except for Luck, which is 2? God forbid, my lure stats?? I don't know, but I'm done cataloguing! Now let's get into what you came here for!!

Those gems are so, so valuable, so you know I'll be gunning for those. Although it does mean that I have to remember to play at night if I want to do that eel task. Those are kind of a pain in the ass... I should probably spend some time grinding garbage so that I can get Temporary Luck for eel time.

Well, first thing's first: off to Paradise Island to collect wood and see who our quest NPC is! As it turns out, Sir Joseph Bellywise is waiting for us, with a request for 3 Largetooth Flounder. That should hopefully synergize well with my consecutive reeling task.

I end up getting both tasks done without too much trouble, although I did break my reel chain and I don't want to talk about it. I handed in my three shittiest flounders for a nice 407 gold. I spend the rest of my visit hanging out in the Garbage Patch so that I can take home a full inventory and work towards that Temporary Luck. Once home, I quickly deposit two wood in the next section of the fish tank; that's where I'm focusing my efforts right now, as I've not found myself filling up the item storage yet. But with that, it's Great Lakes time!

Our daily NPC for this area is Mike "Lock" Smith, who just tells me to go fuck myself and that he's looking for someone more experienced. I'm level 7, what the hell do you want from me?! I also encounter some stress early on in the form of Sea Lampreys; the game doesn't recognize this, but I the player know that they're an invasive species, so morally I will not throw them back in to save bag space. Which means I may have to spend more gold going back to free up some slots.

...Or my rod could break and make us have to go back anyway. Neat. I'll plan ahead and go for the cheaper Garbage Grabber Rod; it shouldn't impede my catching too much, and I want to be able to hit a 50 cleanup streak by nightfall. The rest of the Brook Trout search is a cakewalk, but I swear the longer I know my reel streak is, the more scarcely I breathe during the hooking sequence. This is in spite of me purposefully not checking the number because I know it'll psych me out.

While I'm trying to catch one more thing to bring home, I wonder about the internal formula the game must use to calculate rod wear. I know for a fact different rods have different strengths, and I imagine that fish weight must factor in somehow, because some fish will be too strong and will pull the line out of range and break free. Does player strength get taken into account? I see people on the Discord saying that they still lose fish even at 8 or so strength. I don't know. Food for thought.

With the Brook Trout task now complete, I'm able to deposit a two-star into the fish tank, as well as adding some more wood onto the Alaska pile. Seeing as how I've not unlocked that area yet, building that section of the fish tank is not a priority. But I do need something to do with all that wood.

Since our final daily task is locked to nighttime, and I'm writing this at 3:15 pm, that means our last stop for now is Costa Rica! I'll be honest, this map is so huge, I don't even end up finding all the daily wood half the time, and I don't exactly bother. It's just sooo much effort to comb through all that water... based on the size progression so far, I can only imagine Alaska will be downright nightmarish.

I immediately eat my words and find two wood floating right next to each other.

While it's a nice bonus for sure, this still leaves me in the dark on who and where our Daily Slut Encounter is. I eventually give up and bring home some dudes for the tank: a Tarpon, a Jack Crevalle, and a Pompano, all sadly one star. The Tarpon has just the most delightfully smug little face swimming around in there.

I returned to Costa Rica to try and find some new trash, and only on my last bag slot did I snag something new: the Ship Bell from Santa Maria. It's only on the way back that I finally find the NPC. It's Sir Joseph Bellywise again, this time wanting 110 lbs of fish for a party tomorrow. I can do that! After I go drop off this trash run. Self-reminder: he is west of the Spanish Shipwreck. Trash payouts barely make up for the price of coming back, but I need it.

Aand it turns out the task's payout was barely worth the trip anyway! 95 coins for 110 pounds of fish? That is straight up daylight robbery. Anyway, after brutally murdering my reel streak, I don't feel like playing anymore, so I'll resume this entry tonight when it's eel time. I place a one-star Broomtail Grouper face-down and end my turn.

Touching base again past midnight, and holy shit, I was actually able to do it! While I was waiting for my T gel to dry, not only did I snag 3 American Eels and claim the gem prize, but I also caught the Lake Sturgeon (2 stars, straight to the fish tank) and got 5 more gems from Aneta Angler for completing the area! I also slapped a 2-star American Eel and a 1-star Flathead Catfish into the fish tank for good measure. With time left on my Temporary Luck, I set out for the Great Depths of Costa Rica.

And I sure reaped the benefits! I brought home a 2-star Barracuda, a 2-star Wahoo to replace the one in my fish tank, a 2-star Nurse Shark, a 1-star Hammerhead Shark, and a 1-star Whitetip Shark. In other news, I need to do wrist stretches now. I also got myself a new creature discovery in the Red-Ringed Clinging Crab; all in all, this netted me another Aneta Angler prize, with her giving me 5 Rare Bait for my efforts. The payout for this trip wasn't spectacular, but it'll be worth it in the future.

... And dear God, to ride out the last of my Temporary Luck, I hit the middle north of Paradise Island, as that's where other anglers on the Discord had been reporting Shredder sightings for tonight. And whaddya know! I actually caught the fucker first try! This got me two stars in the Monster Collector achievement, and I can finally go talk to Cap'n Slappy and finish out the main area quest. I also level up, getting 2,800 coins in all between that and the quest reward. ...Tapping the level-up turns out to be a major mistake, as I was planning on going to sleep, but now I have an hour of temporary luck. e.e I spend my singular stat point on Strength, boosting it to 2; I've been searching for a lot of large targets, and every time a fish breaks free, I lose a bit of my awake time for the day.

Well, I'm not one to waste Temporary Luck now that I'm journaling my grind, so back to Costa Rica it is. I can't tell if this is just copium on my part, but I swear there is an immediate, noticeable difference in how easy it is to control the reel bar when battling a fish that engages the minigame now that I've leveled up my Strength. Either that or I'm getting better at the game, which is also true, but I swear that bar is just steadier. Honestly, I was considering getting a Monster Rod, but I've been doing so well with just the Carbon Rod that it feels unnecessary at this point.

I'm glad to announce that I got even more new discoveries before bed: the Pacific Sailfish (2 stars) and the Bull Shark (also 2 stars). I was trying for the Black Marlin for a bit, but with a sliver of Temporary Luck left, I decided to call it quits because I was getting too eepy. Still, I'd say that was a relentlessly productive day of fishing.

This was really fun to journal! The verb tenses are all over the place, and punctuation is real funky; this certainly isn't editor's portfolio material. But I think it's something I'd like to do more often! I like writing more than I give myself credit for. Hopefully the next post will be much shorter!

A few months ago he would think that maybe his body was just malfunctioning– he wasn't a real human after all. Merely a puppet tossed between people and gods. But now, he found a name for it.

It was a shame he never said it outloud. Never dared to, the... feeling, as he called it, burried underneath all the mechanical parts that someone dared to push inside him.

And when he finally, finally digged it out and let the faint light of it warm him and was ready to show to you—

You were gone. Forgotten just how once he was, not remembered by anyone but him and nowhere to be found again.

Life has betrayed him so many times now, locking his non-existing heart in a cage and throwing away the keys into the depths and when he finally found them out, fought his way in the deep waters and emerged with the keys in his hand, clutching them hard till his knuckles turned white, it... happened again. And this time, there was no way he could find the key again.

Life played a cruel joke on him again and took you away from him before he could say anything. How did it happen even? People forgot about him because he messed himself with the Irminsul, but you?

Why? How? Why he couldn't find a single answer?

The little god looked at him sadly, as if a part of her somehow understood his pain and reached out her hand to hold his.

He let her do it.
