I get a lot of curious people wondering what my day to day life is like. Wondering why it differs from a low support needs person. I would like to preface by saying that my support needs themselves although are medium support needs, my needs fluctuate depending on my catatonia, mental health, physical health, etc. My support needs are complex. Please keep in mind that my support needs are on the low end of medium support needs. I will be answering some questions as well at the end.
Everyday looks different. Most days I’m trapped in bed for the majority of the day, some days I’m able to get up and walk around or go places. But, Here’s what a more typical day looks like for me at the moment.
I wake up, and lay in bed for a few hours, I usually scroll through tumblr, TikTok, or discord. I eventually remember to take my medication, and I take it in bed. I am almost completely independent with medication. I eventually get a pain reminder and eventually get up to use the bathroom and try and start my day if I’m not experiencing catatonia at that moment. I usually experience catatonia in the afternoon because I need to start tasks and so I freeze up so getting up to use the bathroom or start my day is very hard and usually takes me hours.
I then come back to bed and lay back down for a few hours. Later into the afternoon, I eventually wonder downstairs and bother my mother. She eventually makes me food if I ask or helps me make it. If I don’t have the spoons to ask or make food then I simply don’t eat. After eating, or not eating and just bugging my mother for a bit, I wonder back upstairs and back into bed. I usually lay in bed for the rest of the day scrolling through TikTok or tumblr, or discord. I talk to friends and my boyfriend throughout the day.
Later in the evening, I eventually get up again if I’m not experiencing catatonia again and don’t need prompting to get up, and walk back downstairs to bother my sisters or my parents. I eat dinner that my family cooks usually. I eventually get bored after dinner and go back to bed and spend the rest of my night there.
Some days are easier than others. Some days I take a walk with my family, some days I go out to the store with my family, some days all I do is lay in bed staring blankly at a wall. It really depends. This is just how my life looks more recently.
Some questions:
Who makes phone calls for you?: for now? I make my own phone calls with prompting and help making a script. However, due to recently starting to lose my voice more and more, that might have to change.
Who cooks meals for you? Do you make your own meals?: For now, my mother or my father makes about 99% of my meals. I can make simple things with prompting and help but usually don’t waste my energy doing it.
Do you have a job? What do you do with your day?: Most of my days are spent in bed or with family. I don’t work.
Can you bathe yourself?: This is actually something I’ve been consistently working on. The short answer? Yes. I can bathe myself. I just need again, prompting. Need lots of prompting. Grooming? That’s a different story.
What things can’t you do?: I can’t do most ADLs independently, I need help with virtually everything in some way. So cooking, cleaning, calling places, etc. I also need help with bathing and general grooming (brushing teeth, hair, clipping nails, etc)
How often do you use AAC?: As of lately? I talk maybe 10? 20%? of the time. I use aac in the house and outside the house. Outside the house I use aac a good 99% of the time, the other 1% I just do simple yes or no questions. Unless with friends then it’s a bit more of a conversation. In the house I either use aac, a mixture of very small conversation and sentences, or yes or no answers. My speech is very unreliable. Some days are good and I can talk a bit more than usual, and some days I can talk virtually nothing at all. Everyday though, I still struggle with speech in some way.
What activities do you do? What do you do for fun?: virtually nothing. I’m working on getting hobbies but I really struggle with hobbies due to catatonia and executive dysfunction. Hobbies have just never been my thing. I usually read, or write. I love writing.
I hope this helps give some insight and any questions or comments are welcome. I know there’s more I’m leaving out, but this has been what a general day in my life looks like lately. It’s hard. My support needs are getting more, and I’m needing more support. However, I’m taking it one day at a time.

The way some tom stans - or haters pretending to be stans - love to catastrophize the opinions of losers on social media needs to be studied. Because why did I see an anon on one blog say they "contacted tom's publicist" to tell them to do something about the "R&J pr disaster"?
Have y'all never followed any celebrity before? What disaster? The "disaster" of having multiple days of supportive crowds cheering at the end of each show? The "disaster" of multiple glowing reviews about the show from people who watched it - you know, people whose opinions ACTUALLY matter because they paid money to see the show? The "disaster" of the smiles on the cast's faces when they see the crowds waiting for them outside? No? Oh so you mean the "disaster" of random racists with 12 followers and a purchased blue checkmark and random tom haters who are jumping on the bandwagon to continue hating on him? The ones you guys CONTINUE to elevate by talking about them, engaging with their nonsense, or sending their tweets to active blogs... to do what, exactly? To coddle you and give you virtual hugs and comfort? To say "yeah I agree, tom is totes racist actually" because you are actually a hater but too much of a coward to hate directly?
Focus on the real people with real faces that the cast see cheering for them night after night. If you are being genuine, and the cast's mental health is your "concern", trust that they most likely know not to read that shit anymore. They probably have people filtering the actual reviews to them. If their physical safety is your "concern", trust that they have enough security to take care of them. If you are being honest-to-god "concerned" about tom's reputation, trust that you are blowing things way out of proportion. Tom gets tweets like those everyday and has been for years and he is just fine and dandy. Still getting work, still well-loved by people who actually know him, and still richer than any of us will ever be. Believe me when I say many many many many celebrities have had worse "scandals" and are still completely fine. Even the ones that are being called out right now on that block list will barely feel a dent in their reputations. As much as we like to pretend we're getting better, we still live in a celebrity-obsessed society.
Also, do take the time to consider that the silence of the production, of other cast members, and of Fran herself may be something that is happening on purpose. They see each other every day, work very (very) closely together, and surely have had discussions on how this whole thing will be handled.
Lastly, take the time to also consider that maybe you don't care about what Fran is going through at all and you just want tom to "do something about it" because you think it will give you moral superiority as his stan. OR you don't care about what Fran is going through at all and you just want to use this to fuel your hate boner for tom. Because trust me, the fans who DO care about everyone in the cast.. they are highlighting, retweeting, reblogging the glowing reviews and supportive posts and stories. They are posting pictures of Fran smiling on stage or at the stage door. They are talking about her talents, her stage presence, her beauty, her chemistry with tom. What they are NOT doing is posting hate tweets on their blogs so more people can see them.

Welcome to Science Sunday! This is a new series I'll be running until I run out of content or forget to do it! Every Sunday I'll make a post discussing weird or scary science in comics!!
This week's post is about why Magneto is stronger than any writer realizes. Magneto has a secret ability that no one realizes, and I only realized thanks to this little device here:

This is called a transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) device. It emits magnetic fields. The difference is, it doesn't move metal around. It alters brain function. It uses it's magnetic field to alter the electrical signals in the brain, either causing areas to fire faster or fire slower.
In psychology research, TMS is used to induce what are called virtual lesions. Researchers will use TMS to essentially turn off parts of the brain temporarily. The participant is then tested in several different areas to see how they function without that area, helping them identify what that area does. For instance, if their memory suffers, you turned off a memory area. If their eyesight isn't as good, you turned off a vision part of the brain. If they stopped breathing, you turned off a life support part of the brain (This is a joke, as far as I know nothing like this has happened during a TMS study).
Now, I know what you're thinking. "This is all super cool, but what does this have to do with Magneto?" The answer is in the second letter of TMS, magnetic. The device uses magnetic fields to operate, fields that the self proclaimed master of magnetism should be able to replicate fairly easily. Meaning Magneto would theoretically be able to just turn people's brains off if he wanted to. He could just do that. You know in anime how they have the trope of the strong characters aura knocking weaker people unconscious just by being near them (Like with spiritual pressure in Bleach and supreme king haki in One Piece)? Well Magneto could do that too.
Further more, Magneto doesn't have a specified range for his powers, but estimates vary from multiple miles, to planets away. If the small end is true, Magneto could instantly switch off the brains of a whole city's worth of people, instantly killing them, without all that much effort on his part. If the second option is true, Magneto could wipe out the whole human race. Everyone, gone, just like that. Pretty scary stuff.
But even that isn't the end! Remember what I said about using TMS to turn off specific parts of the brain? While if Magneto was accurate enough to target specific brain areas (which he'd have to be in order to lift anything smaller than a baseball with his powers), he could also turn off specific brain areas. By creating a small, simple magnetic field in certain areas of his enemies' heads he could blind them, deafen them, knock them out, wipe their memory, or make them lose the ability to walk. All instantly. All with minimal effort.
There's also the health conditions to consider! A seizure is a large burst of firing in the brain. It happens when rogue electric currents spike and trigger lots of activity in different parts of the brain. Seizures can have permanent lasting effects, like trouble with speech or fine motor movement that last indefinitely. They can also be fatal. Magneto could induce the activity required to create a seizure relatively easy. And given his range, he could do this from miles away, making a targeted attack look like a natural health defect.
Magneto is scary. And I hope you guys can see that now.

So like, since I’m doing my re-read, I’ve reached The Great Hunt and it’s got me thinking about that of the three Ta’veren boys, Mat is the only one who doesn’t get a pov in the first two books. His first pov is book three and while he definitely makes up for lost time I’ve been thinking about it.
So, when I first read Eye of The World and The Great Hunt and joked with my dad about how Mat was virtually a ‘damsel in distress’ for Rand in the first two books. And while it’s Funny I think the actual reasons I got that vibe is the lack of agency.
So Mat gets daggered very early on in the first book and throughout the Camlyn Road-trip Mat’s main purpose is to be something Rand can worry over or be frustrated by. In writing a character Pov is a major way of establishing agency since it turns the character into an active participant in the story and while it’s not the only way to do this as seen by characters like Morraine and Lan who don’t have povs in the first book either but are still active characters. This becomes especially apparent in book 2 where the major motivation for the boys to even go on the hunt for the horn was to get the dagger back for Mat, so much so that it’s readily established that Rand wouldn’t have gone on the hunt point blank if it wasn’t for Mat and the dagger; yet Mat still has no pov in this book despite being the one primarily affected by losing the dagger. Mat is more or less used as a plot hook in the first two books to force Rand into situations he otherwise would not be in. Such as what happened at Four Kings where Rand repeatedly wants to leave and suggests doing so but Mat insists on staying so they don’t have to sleep in the rain or in the case of the hunt, causes Rand to participate in the hunt with a life or death ticking clock. We don’t get any incite beyond Perrin and Rand noting Mat’s physically declining health, growing paler, losing weight and looking sickly as the book goes on. Mat of course doesn’t ever acknowledge it in dialogue because it’s Mat so we as an audience never get any incite into how Mat feels about the fact that he’s quite literally dying since we don’t have the benefit of his internal monologue.
Compare this to a the time where they subverted the ‘damsel in distress’ trope. with Egwene, there are three major plot lines in which she’s captured and we have povs for all three and in each of those events she still has agency. Even in the damane arc where she is quite literally stripped of her agency she still feels like an active character because we see her trying to defy the Seanchen, she’s not simply a plot device needing to be rescued she’s a character experiencing trauma. Even when Rand was put in the box he continues to evolve as a character and so did Faile during her time with the Shaido. All three had povs, all three were still actively participating in their situation, we knew exactly how they felt about the horrible things happening to them and see them deal with them in ways that show their characterization and growth.
Mat receives none of that. Not until the third book at least when he’s finally freed from the dagger.
So what’s up with that? Well, it’s possibly intentional. Okay so, the dagger of Shader Logoth and it’s Evil overwrites or at least tries to overwrite the person it’s possessing, that’s it’s curse, you become one with the dagger and one with Shadar Logoth. So up until the point Mat is fully healed from the dagger he is not really himself. Even after Morraine partially heals him, calming him down and keeping it from getting worse he’s still not fully Himself, as evidence by his memory loss. Partly it’s repression, but it was also the dagger overwriting his pre-exiting memories, his personality, everything that made him him. In the simplest of terms, Mat quite literally Wasn’t really his own character until book three, in many ways he WAS the dagger. An object with no personal agency but a catalyst for other characters.

USask recognizes and appreciates the deeply painful environment that exists for those affected by the conflict in Israel and Gaza, and the tragic loss of life that has ensued. We are committed to supporting all students, staff, and faculty during these challenging times, as well as all members of the USask community who are being negatively affected by the current conflict.  
Our priority is first and foremost the safety of our students, faculty, and staff. We also want to curtail the disruption of academic activities, research and other vital campus undertakings.   
We are aware of an upcoming demonstration planned to take place this week on our campus. We have worked with organizers to ensure it is a safe and peaceful event and that our bylaws are understood and followed, just as we have done with previous demonstration organizers throughout the year.   
USask fully supports freedom of expression and academic freedom and will continue to allow demonstrations, as we have through our history and since the conflict in Israel/Gaza began. Policies, bylaws and laws must be followed.  
We will work with groups wishing to demonstrate through discussions with leaders, as well as our event/space booking processes.

So I may or may not have turned my project moon yume ships into a project sekai unit :(
A group of four vocalists who sometimes perform on the street, sometimes make covers, and sometimes perform in live shows - as long as they're singing, they're doing what they love.
Their name is 'elysian epoch' and their infodump is below 🧡
THE CHARACTERS
Charlie is a street performer from Miyamasuzaka (1-A) - a vocalist who busks nearly everyday singing sweet love songs between afternoon to night. Occasionally she posts covers on social media, but prefers performing live. She is popular and sociable. The leader of elysian epoch, and Tora's best friend since middle school.
Daniel is a rich kid from Kamiyama (2-B) whose knowledge of music all comes from the rich kid classes his parents sent him to. Has as much of an affinity for coffee as he does for enjoying the musical talent of others! A bright and passionate young man. Part of Kamiyama's Health Committee (insert Welfare joke here) alongside Tora. Classmates with Giovanni.
Tora is a lonely artist from Kamiyama (1-C) who has a complex about her voice sounding 'weird'. She fakes a more typically feminine tone until she is confronted about it. She is awkward but well-meaning. On the Health Committee with Daniel and in the Art Club with Giovanni, and Charlie's best friend since middle school.
Giovanni is another quiet artist from Kamiyama (2-B) who fell into a deep depression after his childhood friend tragically passed away. Often sleeping or doodling aimlessly during class. He regained his inspiration for life after seeing Charlie, Tora and Daniel perform together for the first time.
The Harbour SEKAI is a city-based dock right by a sea that seems to stretch on for miles. There are some cozy shops further back, and the main walking street is lit up by street-lamps. The moon is almost always up, and the sun never rises past the horizon. It is an overall large, spacious area with a lot of environmental value. Miku, Luka and KAITO are the initial Virtual Singers. Thematically the group portrays a blend of VBS and N25. Music genre-wise, their style is mostly night-time city pop (like A4., imase and natori), with the occassional electro swing (like Surii and FAKE TYPE).
THE STORY
Charlie first enters her SEKAI after thinking about where she wants to go with her passion for musical performance. Typical SEKAI things happen where she meets and talks to Miku, before leaving and thinking that it was simply a dream.
The next day, Daniel happens across Charlie's street performance and stays until she finishes her song. She thought he was cute and gave a little wink as fanservice, and though she was disappointed when he left right as the song ended, she continued on with her set. The next day, Charlie infiltrates Kamiyama to spend the lunch break with Tora, and Daniel sees the former after having come to the classroom to ask the latter a question regarding the committee.
Charlie and Daniel recognise each other and chat for a bit, with Daniel praising her vocal performance and Charlie praising him for how much he knows. She becomes slightly infatuated, and once he leaves she makes a light-hearted comment about inviting him to perform with her, which Tora dismisses as a joke.
After more relationship establishment (Daniel and Giovanni as classmates, Giovanni and Tora as club mates, Giovanni and Charlie having negative first impressions of each other) and discussions, Charlie and Daniel eventually perform together and it's wonderful. Tora is happy that her best friend found someone to perform with, but ultimately combats feelings of jealousy at the fact that she isn't there with her.
She becomes slightly withdrawn from her friendship with Charlie but in that time bonds more with Giovanni, as they finally start having proper conversations during their club activities, sharing the same uncertainty in what they want to do with their lives and having art as a grounding crutch.
Charlie notices that Tora is distancing herself a little and expresses her worries to Daniel, and the two of them accidentally end up in SEKAI. Through a discussion with him, Luka and KAITO about not knowing why Tora is suddenly becoming more distant, realises how she doesn't truly know her. She suppresses a breakdown - now feeling guilty, she decides to properly talk to Tora.
They attempt to share a heart to heart in Tora's room, but she struggles in opening up and saying what she wants to say. Charlie decides to bring her to SEKAI to help her calm down, and to her surprise Daniel is already there exploring the area. He gives them privacy, and Tora finally tells Charlie about how she wants to perform with her as well. Charlie is overjoyed and formally invites her to perform together with Daniel, and insists that they sing a song together immediately, to which Tora nervously agrees.
A few days later, Daniel and Giovanni interact. The former is more starry-eyed than usual and Giovanni attempts to poke fun at him, but Daniel starts gushing about performing with Charlie, to which Giovanni reacts neutrally but thinks cynically about, internally dismissing it as a phase or short-lived fulfilment that ultimately won't bring him anywhere. The same day, he notices that Tora is also in higher spirits than usual, and after she essentially tells him the same thing albeit in a more awkward and soft-spoken manner, he ends up slightly spiralling. He stumbles into SEKAI, and has a very confused chat with KAITO before he leaves, wanting to believe that it was a dream but ultimately knowing that it wasn't.
It's Giovanni's turn to become more withdrawn and pessimistic, additionally falling into an artistic slump. Both Daniel and Tora notice but are unsure of how to talk to him, but eventually the former decides to properly approach him and brings him into SEKAI, interrupting a practice session between Charlie and Tora. Giovanni is shocked that they all also have access to SEKAI and vice versa. Charlie, who hasn't had a meaningful interaction with Giovanni since the time they first met, is hesitant in doing so especially now, but after some prompting from her performance partners she decides to invite Giovanni to watch them busk on the street. Giovanni ultimately disregards the suggestion before he leaves, and Charlie is annoyed at his melancholy, but keeps her thoughts to herself after seeing how worried Daniel and Tora are.
The next day, Charlie, Daniel and Tora are about to perform together for the first time and there's no sign of Giovanni. Charlie passively expresses her annoyance, but they start their set. Giovanni, having initially not wanted to go see the three of them, ends up walking past anyhow, and he's captivated by how much they seem to be truly enjoying themselves, and how radiant they appear to be while they're singing. He hurriedly leaves once the song ends, which the other three notice.
Giovanni is unable to be found anywhere for the next two days and Charlie is frustrated by how much Daniel and Tora care, so she goes off to SEKAI by herself under the pretence of wanting to ask Miku a question. She finds Giovanni there by himself, with Miku watching him from a distance. She tells Charlie that he's been wandering around the SEKAI aimlessly, and after some deliberating she caves and goes up to him. She starts off sharply asking him why he ran away after he saw the three of them perform, and he says that seeing them all perform with such passion reminded him of an old friend he had - Carmen - whose death cause him to lose his motivation for life. He admits that seeing them with the same kind of spark and passion that Carmen had absolutely terrified him, but ultimately made him want to find a reason to live his life properly - he is just unsure of how to do such a thing. Charlie sympathises with his loss, before inviting him to be a part of their performance group.
Just as Giovanni agrees, Daniel and Tora enter SEKAI, saying that they were prompted by Miku after she overheard them being concerned about the other two. Charlie establishes them all as a group, and Daniel enthusiastically suggests the name 'Elysium'. Giovanni dislikes them implicitly representing a form of the afterlife, and Charlie then suggests 'elysian epoch', to keep Daniel's idea but turn it into something a little more abstract for Giovanni's sake. They all agree on the name, and 'Untitled' turns into 'Elysium Rendezvous'. Miku, Luka and KAITO come up to them and explain that their feelings turned into a song before prompting them to sing it, and it marks the first time they all sing together as a group.
A few days later they all perform the song live on the streets, and it is noted by Charlie's regulars as the first time she performed an original song, and she happily says that there may be more to come, and now that she has more people with her she's going to try and expand the group's horizons, branching out into doing more things and performing in more places and more forms of media. There are slightly mixed reactions, but Charlie insists that this is the path she wants to take with the group, and as the crowd disperses she hears some people commenting on the other member in a critical manner, additionally some people wanting her to go back to performing solo. She is annoyed at hearing such things, but decides to put on a smile and regroups with the rest of elysian epoch, happily asking them when they're all free to perform together again.

hello everyone 🩷
first off, i literally disappeared and i’m sorry for that LOL. i was working a lot on my mental health and i’m FINALLY improving 🥹 cheolhub is officially in therapy. (everyone cheered!!) ANYWAY, i just wanted to let everyone know i’m doing well and i’m still obsessed with seventeen (and scarily obsessed with cheol)!!! i’ve even started writing again (slowly BUT surely). i hope to be more active now that i’m only in a few classes and work hasn’t been too hard on me. i literally love you guys so much and want to thank everyone who’s been supporting me and my fics whether you followed before or while i was away, it means so much. & thank you so so much to everyone who’s sent an ask while on my near 3 month long hiatus, i’m giving you all virtual kisses on the cheek mwah mwah 🎀

It’s hard to understand my life as it is now. I get up, do a few things around the house or go to doctor appointments or run errands, and then I just exist for the rest of my waking hours. I can’t watch anything that has a narrative. I can’t listen to music. I make myself read and write fanfiction—I enjoy it, but it’s an effort to do it, so I make myself read and write a bit each day.
I’ve had similar times. In 2004 and 2009 I had major depressive episodes that involved the mental health symptoms—not able to process things or focus, too overstimulated to engage.
What I’m going through now has that but also the physical, caused by autoimmune diseases that I’m fairly certain ramped up after I got Covid.
A really bad illness went through my university in Fall 2019, and one student actually died in their car and was found and resuscitated. Said student’s mother had Covid. The wave of illness was brutal, and if it wasn’t Covid it was still destructive. I had students who were in really bad shape and I worked with them on absences and missed work.
I had confirmed Covid in June 2022 (thanks for the birthday gift, Mom), and it seemed to all get worse and I was no longer allowed to teach virtually.
Now, I often need to sit down in the middle of activities after only a few minutes. We moved a chair into the kitchen so I can still cook or at least visit with Mom while she does dishes. I can sit down to dry pots and pans. Mom keeps telling me I’m doing better than I was, but it’s hard to really feel it.
But I will sleep 12 hours at a time and want to sleep more. Sometimes I have to just stop what I’m doing and go lay down. I feel like I walk through life dazed and with blinders on, unable to engage much a lot of the time. I’m overwhelmed a lot and I’m in too much pain to function well most of the time. I can’t think, and I lose words all the time.
I’m working on radical acceptance, but it’s hard not to think “I was an English professor” when I lose words and can’t think. Thinking was my career. It’s hard not to be bitter about what I’ve lost.
It’s hard to live in the now when there’s not much living going on in the now, you know?

Unhoused Solidarity In Action
This is a non-exhaustive list of resources you might have access to, or know of, that can be used to aid unhoused community members directly. Many of these focus on direct mutual aid as individuals but can be helpful to consider when in community organizing settings. - What do you (or someone you know) have access to, that you can provide to the community? - Can they be accessed, used, or provided: regularly, occasionally, only in emergencies, weekly, daily, sporadically, consistently, etc.? - Consider seasonal needs (winter coats don’t help us when it’s 90 degrees out!) - Remember to practice active, informed consent with individuals and ask if these would be helpful! Don’t take it personally if your offer isn’t helpful to someone, it might help someone else. - These should be realistic and not compromise your safety or well-being. Remember to prioritize safety over comfort.
Housing
- Consider your relationship with this person (generally, don’t offer complete strangers into your home)
- Location matters a lot. Unhoused people often need to be near “hubs”/cities, close to resources and systems of care.
- Some people can’t live in hotels, couch surf, or any of these options without losing their housing vouchers, and in some cases health insurance or other assistance programs. Legal definitions of homelessness (used by voucher programs) usually don’t include people living in hotels/motels, or couch surfing (including most of these options). Check with the individual to see if this might be helpful.

As a disclaimer: I have been homeless/unhoused for over half of my life. My experiences of homelessness have included while being a infant, toddler, young child, preteen, teenager, and young adult. I am 24 years old. My most recent experience of being unhoused was last year, and I am currently precariously housed (meaning: at high risk of losing housing again). My experiences of homelessness have included sleeping outside in a tent, sleeping on park benches and under freeways, walking around all night to avoid hypothermia and freezing to death (something that has happened to several of my friends), couch surfing, sleeping in cars, squatting, sleeping in motels, living in a shelter, and institutionalized. I have been homeless with family a few times during early childhood and again when I was 15. All of my other experiences of homelessness have been on my own starting at age 9 or 10, and the last time I lived with a parent I was 16. I have been homeless in both rural and urban areas. I have been homeless in New England/Northeast United States as well as the Pacific Northwest.
In addition to this, I have many contributing factors to my experience, including being disabled, a person of color, trans, queer, a survivor of child abuse and CSA, being trafficked, and a drug user and a SWer, amongst other marginalized experiences.
That being said: my experience of being unhoused/homeless is not the universal experience. While I know many people of all different demographics who I’ve met on the streets, I cannot speak to every single person’s experiences. I especially cannot speak to experiences outside of the United States, aside from what I hear secondhand.
This is meant to serve as a general guide to accompany a workshop I created, and might not be helpful for everyone. If it’s not helpful, I hope it inspires others to offer creative solutions. I’m always working on expanding this list. Thank you for reading.

are you familiar with XingXing the one armed temple macaque?
I am, and to be honest I have very mixed feelings about her situation.
I have been vocal about how it is wrong and unethical to keep primates as pets, how feeding wildlife is harmful, and how human/primate interactions are dangerous for both parties. XingXing is an interesting case, as she does not fit perfectly into the categories I have talked about.
XingXing is not a pet, and is able to free roam. I have been told that XingXing decides how to spend her time and will often go into the forest for days at a time. She is fed by people, but only a few who are trusted to do so, who she has ongoing relationships with. Additionally, she has a trauma history that means that she would struggle in the wild if left entirely alone.
In complex cases like this it is easy to say that she should live at a sanctuary. Of course animals living in the wild is ideal, but most people agree that if that is not possible that a sanctuary or zoo should care for them. The reality is more challenging, as sanctuaries are in high demand and need a lot of support. They are typically underfunded and rely on the labour of volunteers, and while they would love to care for every animal in need it is simply not possible. Additionally, major changes can be detrimental for animals especially if they have trauma histories. As such I feel that if XingXing is able to live well where she is, her comfort should be prioritized.
That being said, I feel that there should be some improvements made to her lifestyle and the way it is documented. While being fed may be necessary if she is unable to forage for herself, she appears to be quite overweight. While humans can be a pretty wide range of sizes and still healthy, other species have much narrower ranges of healthy sizes and XingXing's size may be detrimental to her health and activity level. The woman who cares for her is elderly and may not be able to encourage her to be more active, but despite XingXing's diet appearing to be not bad health wise (mostly fruit from what I have seen) I think cutting down on the sweets and adding more leafy greens could be good for her both in helping her lose weight and encouraging her to forage for her own food as much as possible.
The only major issue I have with XingXing is her social media presence. She is very cute and charismatic, but seeing her being fed and pet by people can be detrimental to her species and other monkeys in the long term. People who see monkeys being treated like pets even if they are not pets are likely to get the idea that monkeys are safe, friendly, and even adoptable. A caretaker for a macaque that requires supplemental snacks giving her a banana and a tourist giving a wild macaque a banana to bribe it to pose for a picture can look virtually identical on social media. Increasingly, social media accounts for accredited sanctuaries are adding disclaimers or even not posting photos or videos that show staff touching the animals altogether to avoid making it look like the animals could be pets.
XingXing is lovely and I hope that she is well taken care of and active, but I also worry that people who see photos and videos of her will get the wrong idea on appropriate human/primate interactions.
