You ever find it odd how Allura talks about the Paladins and the Lions and whatnot, like her and Coran speak about them like there’s some kind of massive lineage, like their was one other set of Paladins, but they speak like their have been generations of them.

Paladin redesigns

So... my friend @adaphyl and I have been working on a Voltron rewrite because canon Voltron? Eughdghf god awful, we all know. But it's ok, it's not real it can't hurt us.

We've been working through the cast and redesigning characters. I'm posting the paladin redesigns first just because my Altean redesigns need a bit more explanation... there's a lot of lore and I just don't got it in me rn.

I say these are the paladin redesigns but I did also include Keith's dad for reasons, we called him Jim. Anyways here are my redesigns as well as some notes on our rewrites of the characters (I will go more into this at a later date, but for now just some important notes).

Keith:

He's trans ftm, wears a binder. He needs to be wrestled out of said binder because he will wear it for too long. He is on hrt but has been off of it for a while cause space.

Keith is itty bitty, we made him 5'5.

He has more non-human features, the stripes on his arms are Galran markings, as well as the "freckles" on his face. He does get more Galran features in the future (will be in a future post).

Shiro's son.

He's autistic because I say so (I'm projecting but also honestly none of them are neurotypical lets be real).

Lance:

Lance is amab and nonbinary, goes by he/they.

Fuckboy with a heart of gold but like... genuinely. He comes off as a fuckboy to many people but he truly is just a silly little guy. Canon Lance but far better.

He's average height, 5'10.

He wears friendship bracelets made by his nieces and nephews, and always has hair ties on him for anyone who needs one. The anklet is from his mother.

Shark tooth necklace is because it's his favorite animal (and because sharks are MY favorite and I'm projecting).

Pidge:

Transmasc genderfluid, uses they/them pronouns primarily but is fine with any.

Pidge is still the shortest, around 4'11 iirc.

Pidge is aroace because I say so, romance and sex repulsed they do not give a shit about any of it.

Their hoodie was originally Matt's, they stole it in order to sneak into the Garrison and decided to just keep it. Pidge misses their brother.

Pidge wears a binder and is very good about not wearing it for too long. They set a timer for how long they should wear it and will take it off as soon as they can, as well as set reminders for break days. They are on top of this shit.

Hunk:

Hunk has tattoos (not pictured, we're working on designing them). We wanted to really represent Hunk's culture and because he's Samoan we wanted to give him some traditional Samoan tattoos as a treat.

He's everyone's bestie/big brother actually and I love him can you tell I love him?

iirc he's around 6'0 tall.

Paints his nails the voltron colors, one finger for each member. His thumbs are painted yellow so he can point to himself.

Shiro:

Shiro is a trans man, he has had top surgery and is also on hrt.

Shiro is Keith's stepdad... kind of. Kind of stepdad kind of adopted dad. Simply dad.

Shiro is also around 6'0, shorter by Hunk by an inch.

Oh he also has a tongue piercing hehe haha.

Jim (Keith's bio dad):

Jim is Jim.

No but really, he was in fact a firefighter, we are keeping that. He dies in a fire and Keith now wears his dog tag.

He may have held hands with Shiro at some point :3c

There isn't much to say about him (I simply don't remember everything) but just know I love him.

Ok ok fine. In MY vld au, Bad is the black paladin, Dream is the green paladin, George is the blue paladin, Sapnap is the red paladin, and Sam is the yellow paladin. Skeppy is the beautiful prince whose home world was destroyed and needs the paladins to help him save the universe. Ant is his manservant or whatever.

Voltron post-s2 AU

Voltron fix-it in year of our lord two thousand twenty three? More likely than you think! Or rather, if I were writing Voltron after season 2, here’s what I’d do:

First of all Shiro doesn’t die. There also isn’t a clone arc because I could never figure out a path that totally satisfied me but that’s a me issue. Shiro does disappear at the end of season 2, but he gets sent to an alternate reality like in this post. Short form is that reality’s Takashi Shirogane was the Blue Paladin and died died ten years age. The alternate!paladins (inclusive of alt!Allura who is the Blue Paladin) are much older than their canon counterparts and low-key having a crisis about this baby version of their long-dead teammate suddenly dropped into their mist. Especially when they realize how traumatized and young he is—and utterly lacking in self worth. These older paladins cannot stand letting another Takashi Shirogane get himself killed and will do anything to ensure that doesn’t happen.

(Just so long as everyone’s conflicting trauma doesn't get in the way)

But while Shiro’s stuck in reality universe getting a crash course on self worth and YES you matter, don’t you dare freaking die (and also getting some helpful Voltron tips from much more experienced paladins) back in our OG reality…

The canon team is struggling.

They’re trying. But Shiro is GONE, and no one knows what happened to him. The remaining paladins are four teenagers who were thrown into a war without warning, have essentially been on the run ever since, and now just lost the only remaining source of stability they had. They’re scared, overwhelmed, and fighting like cats and dogs. Allura’s trying to lead them, but the hole that Shiro left is gaping and almost too painful to touch. It doesn’t help that Allura feels the personal loss keenly but believes to be an effective leader she has to put on a strong face. This causes certain paladins (Keith, it’s obviously Keith) to be furious with her, thinking she doesn’t care, and everything deteriorates from there.

In addition to the interpersonal issues, the Black Lion is offline. It won’t turn on—not for Keith, not for Allura, not for anyone. And they’ve all tried in desperation, but it won’t even flicker. As long as the Black Lion is unresponsive, they try everything they can think of, but they can’t find a single hint of a clue of what happened to Shiro or where he might be. And still, the Black Lion does nothing. So in addition to the terror and uncertainty in missing Shiro, they are now down a Lion and completely unable to form Voltron.

Not good. Especially not good because while Zarkon is down (though for how long, they don’t know), there are still plenty of Galra commanders who are ready and gunning for blood. Vengeance is swift and the paladins are only escaping by the skin of their teeth. The stress is putting even more pressure on the already flaring tensions and tempers in the wake of Shiro’s absence, and Team Voltron is in serious danger, both from the outside and within.

Then Lotor shows up.

Now this Lotor doesn’t have his generals, and it’s not entirely clear where he came from. He says he’s here to help. And he just so happens to have Altean heritage, which obviously interests and intrigues Allura. (He just oh so conveniently forgets to mention the tiny little fact that Zarkon is his father.) Allura, who is alone and desperately aching for support without Shiro, obviously jumps at the opportunity to connect with another Altean. 

The paladins are less charmed. Hunk is immediately suspicious. Lance is jealous of his apparent interest to Allura. Pidge is barely speaking to her teammates these days. She doesn’t give a shit about some random purple guy. Keith hates him immediately. Then again, Keith seems to hate everyone since Shiro has disappeared, so maybe that doesn’t mean anything. 

And look, Allura isn’t stupid. She knows she should be cautious. And she is. But she also desperately needs a friend, and Lotor steps up while the other paladins have been failing her. 

Obviously, they can’t hide the massive Dead Black Lion issue for long, and Lotor is very interested. But he keeps it cool. He talks Allura into letting him try. The other paladins are deeply unhappy about it but not too worried because obviously it’s not going to work, right?

Expect then the Black Lion lights up.

It’s only for a moment and then the Black Lion goes dark again. But it’s the most reaction anyone has been able to get out the Lion. 

And they’re desperate.

Keith is BEYOND offended at the mere idea of anyone other than Shiro being the Black Paladin and nearly splits from the team over it. It’s only Lance going after him and, in a surprising show of maturity, overcoming his jealousy and practically begging Keith to stay that keeps him from vanishing completely. He’s still furious though. Hunk is beyond anxious, and even Pidge, who has been trying to check out from all emotion and people up until now, is becoming suspicious and anxious. 

But Allura… Look, she’s the sole leader right now. She sometimes feels like she’s the only one who still cares about saving the universe from the Galra anymore. But she also is very aware that she is now solely responsible for the remaining young paladins. If she owes Shiro anything in his absence, isn’t it to protect the team he gave his life for?

And to do that…they need Voltron. 

So when Lotor confesses to her that he had felt the Black Lion but suspects the Black Lion was damaged in the last fight against Zarkon, she listens. Lotor has access to some rare surviving records of Altean alchemy. He says he has a spell that, combined with Allura’s connection to the Lions, could fix the Black Lion. He says if Allura helps him strengthen his connection to the Black Lion, he’ll help them fight the Galra.

And Allura… it’s not that she doesn’t want Shiro back, of course she’d rather have Shiro! She can’t trust Lotor like she knew she could trust Shiro (even if he is Altean), and the other paladins clearly don’t like him. But she’s all alone. She has to keep Shiro’s team alive for him. They NEED Voltron.

So, at night, behind the other’s backs, she preforms the ritual with Lotor. 

And it works. 

Lotor is now the Black Paladin. No, it’s not ideal, and there other paladins are deeply unhappy, but all the Lions functional. It’s the best option they have available. 

… Right?

I actually have very complicated feelings about black paladin lance tbh it's like. it's really fun putting him in a Situation where he'd have to grow and adapt and figure out how to lead the team His Way (and also be super super badass while he does it) but at the same time he's literally so perfect for the blue lion ???? like if you put a gun to my head and told me to put lance in whatever lion fits him best blue would ALWAYS be my first choice. not to mention that a different character being black paladin usually means shiro gets kicked to the curb which I never really like

Rewrite: Grieving Shiro

A while ago I mentioned here how I was planning to kill off Shiro for good, or at least delay the clone plot to give the other characters some time to grieve. I wanted the rest of the team to adjust to the change in dynamic, grow closer and become more open with each other. After they’ve gotten past a few hurdles, like maybe struggling to form Voltron at an appropriate time, they come back even more powerful. Voltron’s all about strength in unity to me, and the show puts a lot of emphasis on the importance of trust and bonding... despite neglecting some relationships.

Zarkon is still critically injured after his fight with Shiro, giving the team just a bit of quiet time to start processing what happened and recover themselves, but they still have a lot of work to do, of course. Keith and Pidge would naturally take the loss of Shiro the hardest, and the others would try their best to support them and try to keep the team on track while working through their own feelings. I wanted to have moments between everyone, and it seemed kinda bloated so they may change, but these are just ideas I had from earlier.

I also talked about how I think the lion swap would go in that previous post. I think Keith would be irrationally reluctant to have Shiro be replaced so soon, and overly concerned with finding him because he’s in denial, which could spark an argument. I also like to think that Allura would decide to cut her hair short at this point.

Keith would become more isolated and spend more time on the training deck, partially to take his anger out on the gladiator bots, to exhaust himself, and maybe out of fear of not being strong enough to prevent losing someone else on the team. Lance finds him one night and he tries to convince him to get some rest, but Lance would probably be dealing with same fears so maybe they end up sparring until they’re both exhausted.

Meanwhile, Pidge grows frustrated with themself over being unable to locate their family, and starts feeling hopeless because Shiro was not only a family friend, but still the only connection they had to them at the time. Hunk is there to witness an outburst while they’re working on something together, tries his best to calm and encourage them, and offers them a bear hug.

Keith would feel guilty about his anger, and goes to Red for comfort. He finds Allura in the hangar, apologises for acting irrationally before and tries to explain himself, but Allura cuts him off and expresses her understanding of his grief. They have a heart-to-heart with each about their fathers and relationship with Shiro. This would be where I reveal part of their backstories. Allura would blame herself and feel like her previous leadership is what led to their failure, while Keith would blame his impulsivity. Lance’s insecurity would also come up somehow, since losing such an important member of the team, who he idolised, would probably make him feel even more behind, like he has to push himself even further to fill a role in the team.

Keith wakes up from a nightmare one night, waking Lance in the process. He goes to the others’ room and they sit on the edge of Keith’s bed for a while. Lance prompts Keith to talk about it, but he’s too choked up/gone non-verbal. Lance eventually gives in and pulls him into a hug, hesitantly stroking his hair like he would for his niece or nephew when they were upset. They’d probably both end up crying.

Being the legs, I always pictured Hunk and Lance as having more supportive roles in the team. They begin to feel exhausted, and Hunk is stress-baking when Lance finds him one morning. He joins in, and their anxiety, homesickness, and Hunk’s habit of putting his own needs aside to an unhealthy degree to help others would be addressed. I’d also like to get into part of their backstories, like what they miss about home, and how they were childhood friends and bonded over their love of space and rockets.

The Alteans’ own homesickness, survivor’s guilt and hyper-responsibility would also be addressed. Being the oldest, Coran tries his best to take care of everyone despite his own feelings, offering wisdom where he can, and they’d return the favour helping out around the castle. Allura slowly starts to realise that she doesn’t have to carry the weight of the universe on her shoulders alone, that she still has a family with the team, and she can lean on them.

1. Do you prefer in-denial Lance or pining Lance? How about Keith?

basic cop-out answer but it changes from fic to fic. in a more comedic fic, i like to go for lance who is both pining AND in-denial, aka he knows he’s in love and is mad at it, or i like to make keith like so painfully oblivious to lances blatant PLEASE DATE MEs that it’s funny. generally tho i go for gooey whipped mutual pining.

2. Do you prefer Keith to be baffled by Lance's flirting or just baffled Lance is flirting with him?

baffled that lance is flirting with him. the I Do Not Deserve To Be Loved -complex is my favourite complex to give keith bc i have problems and he’s just so easy to blorbo

3. What's your favourite episode and why?

i’m gonna be so real with you voltron was so bad that once i finished s6 at like 15 yrs old i vowed never to watch it again 💀💀 six years later this vow holds true. however i remember liking the first episode, the mermaid episode, the space mall episode, and the episode where keith chases lotor in the black lion and lance is like dude you fucked up. dumbass. but he’s very obviously fond and he’s THERE and they’re gonna fix it together and that is the first time keith realises that lance fully and completely has his back. that is the moment he fell in love to me

4. What's your favourite character beat and why?

i don’t know what a character beat is BUT i am a lance stan as you may have guessed. interestingly, i used to watch voltron with my siblings and as with all character things we did together, we each picked a favourite and then only that one character was allowed to be your favourite. lance was picked before i could pick him but i got keith (and thus have the most merch of him). and honestly….keith is kind of my favourite i never stop thinking about him and also i write in his pov the most (granted, about lance lol).

5. What's your favourite line you've ever written.

oh that’s a hard one! not to toot my own horn or anything but i’ve had some stellar lines, at least i think. i have a lot of lines that are profound or whatever but to this day i’m proudest of the “i’m anaemic” “oh i didn’t know you had an eating disorder” line like i made myself laugh out loud 💀

6. What's your favourite fic you've ever written

eighty percent of my fics are my faves bc i write to indulge myself lol. BUT i’m rly super proud of my look so good longfic, i love the applebees universe, and the beauty and the beast au is dear to me. i’m also obsessed with this fic that only exists in my head bc i have typed nothing yet. it’s a theatre school taming of the shrew au.

7. What is your favourite type of AU? Do you prefer complete AUs (like BatB) or detail AUs (that angsty thing you wrote where Lance leaves after the game show)?

i love modern aus really. i’m a fan of the mundane. as a close second i like redoing movies/songs/books that aren’t usually au’ed. and i like complete aus WAY better, i just have trouble actually completing them 😭😭
