Savior, Bloodstain, Hellfire, Shadow Ch1

Summary: You were an ordinary nurse, working your way towards balance when the Qlipoth appeared. That all changed when a dark-haired stranger intervened and saved your ass. He and his outlandish companions sparked your curiosity and as the days passed you formed an unbreakable bond with them all. But what happens when your newfound family faces their fate?

(My first fic, a shameless rewrite of the events of DMC5 featuring V x Reader. Angst, fluff, romance and a passable attempt at slow burn. Multiple endings and sequel in progress. I am currently rewriting it chapter by chapter, but the total word count should hover around 150k. Enjoy!)

Ch1: An Introduction to Demons

Your gloved hands desperately pressed against your patient’s split flesh, his blood oozing between your fingers as your colleagues prepared the surgery room. The poor man was awake, terrified tears streaking his face as he stared into your eyes, praying you’d save him.

“It’s alright, you’re going to be okay, we’re going to take care of you,” you told him, forcing your agonized mind to project calmness and reassurance in your tone. It seemed to work; his eyes blinked and the fearful furrow of his brows eased slightly.

Come on, is that room ready yet? He doesn’t have much time left after losing this much blood.

The linoleum floor beneath your feet, normally stark white and freshly bleached, was covered in blood. Your feet were only able to stay stable due to your mandatory anti-slip shoes. The red puddle had been growing for ten minutes as you urgently held this man’s life in your trembling hands. Most nights weren’t like this, most nights the worst you had to deal with was an idiot who hadn’t been paying attention and had touched a hot stove, or maybe if things got really crazy someone would come in with a broken bone.

Rarely did you hold someone’s life in your hands. It never got easier, or less stressful.

The man’s eyes fluttered closed; his head lolled back on the gurney and your heart jumped, knowing how important it was to stay conscious at that point.

“Sir, no, you have to stay awake! Come on, wake up!” your petrified voice uttered, the sound almost foreign to your ears. He didn’t stir, and your panicked thoughts dropped into cold realization as the steady drip of his blood on the floor slowed.

He’s not going to make it. Goddamnit!

“Someone get me some O negative, now!” you screamed desperately. One of your fellow nurses dashed over with a bag, the fluid red and angry looking as she rushed to get an IV prepared. She checked the man’s pulse, searching for a vein to tap. Her eyes met yours in a shared moment of sadness as the look on her face told you everything you needed to know.

The man beneath your hands was dead.

You pulled your shaking hands away from the gash in his chest, caused by a car crash on the nearby interstate, a chunk of metal having sliced deep into his right pectoral. Your eyes filled with tears at your failure as you unsteadily walked to a nearby hazardous waste bin to strip your bloody gloves off.

There was no other urgent need for you so you stepped away to take a moment to breathe, coming to terms with your inability to save the man you had assured would be alright. You sat on the curb outside as your tears fell, chest heaving in a silent sob.

It’s never enough, I’m never good enough… I need to get better, get faster, stronger… Have to save the next one like him.

After a long moment whose length you couldn’t tell, you heard a siren approaching. Another ambulance, racing in with another person who needed help. You stood, shoving your pain away to focus on the now, on the next patient whom you might actually have been able to help.

The rest of your shift passed with little incident; blessedly no other patients died that night. You stripped off your soiled scrubs in the locker room, ruminating once more on all your failures. The faces of every single patient you’d been unable to save passed through your mind and you gritted your teeth, forcing yourself to never forget a single one. Your heart clenched as the man from mere hours before passed in your mind’s eye, his face frozen in a look of strange peace. Reassured by your words that had turned out to be a lie.

“Y/N, you okay?” a voice beside you asked gently. You turned to face the speaker, another nurse coming off shift. You couldn’t recall her name, never having bothered to learn it. Her perky blond ponytail swung as she tilted her head to look at you, blue eyes showing her concern as you clenched your jaw angrily.

“I’m fine,” you ground out finally, and she frowned more deeply at your not fine tone.

“You did everything you could for him, you know. You can’t save everyone and you can’t blame yourself or it’ll destroy you,” she murmured quietly.

Her words triggered your mind to remind you painfully of the very first person you had failed, the image of her corpse still so clear in your memory. You gulped nervously, trying to subdue the dark thoughts as you responded to your colleague.

“I know… but I should’ve been able to save him,” you whispered brokenly. The young woman bit her lip as you struggled to hold back your tears, but as the first sniffles broke through she wrapped you in a hug.

Caitlyn, that’s her name… Caitlyn.

You hesitantly returned her comforting hug, accepting it for the slim reassurance it could provide. Your breath came out in gasps as you withheld the worst of your pain, not knowing enough about Caitlyn to trust her with your past. Even as the thought formed in your mind, you caught a whiff of her shampoo as her ponytail swung past your dripping nose.

Cinnamon. Just like Lara.

Suddenly you couldn’t breathe, frozen like a deer in the headlights as the painful memories rushed through you. Over the years, you’d gotten skilled at subduing them whenever something brought it back to the surface, and you used all your will power to shove it back down into the hole you kept it buried in. Even so, your heart ached at the reminder, making sure you never forgot that day. You pulled away from Caitlyn, arranging your features to show her a teary smile.

“You gonna get home okay?” she asked you kindly. “I can give you a ride if you need it.”

You nodded your head, a rueful glint entering your eyes as you looked at her.

“I live two blocks away. I’ll be all right. Thank you, Caitlyn,” you answered, wiping away the last remnants of your tears. You couldn’t help but hope she’d leave you alone now, and to your relief she turned away to leave with a final worried glance.

The walk home was usually a time of quiet reflection for you, a chance to review all you’d done in the hours at the ER and to tally the lives saved against the lives lost, the scales never tipping to the side of life enough for your satisfaction. That night, you couldn’t remember a single person you helped over the last few hours, the guilt over the single death too heavy to bear.

If only I’d gotten him a transfusion from the start. If only the surgery room had been ready. If only, if only, if only…

You sighed to yourself as you looked forward to the bottle of whiskey waiting for you in your tiny apartment; knowing you had the next day off, you planned to drink until you couldn’t think anymore. A tradition whenever someone died in your arms, something to indulge in to avoid the solitude of your lonely apartment, where not even a goldfish waited for your return.

The familiar wooden sign greeted you from over the doorway as you reached home, its cheerful yellow paint welcoming friends inside. You liked to pretend you’d someday actually invite someone over, but in the five years you’d lived in Red Grave City, you hadn’t allowed a single person to enter your heart, let alone your home.

Too easy to get hurt or to hurt someone. Better to be alone.

The cheap door creaked open and you quickly closed it behind you, alone at last. The keys went in the small bowl on the side table in the entrance, coat on the hook. Shoes kicked off to the corner. With a soft click, you turned on the lights of your small retreat.

You shuffled your way into the living room, the whiskey waiting for you on the coffee table as you plopped into the cushions of your hideous orange couch. You didn’t bother with a glass, taking a sip straight from the glass bottle as you flicked on the television. You took another long gulp as you looked for something to watch, eventually settling on an over the top romantic comedy.

You kept drinking and the terrible movie became funnier with each tingly swallow. By the time the film was over, you were buzzed enough to be satisfied. Another movie began and you pulled your throw blanket over you as you settled in to watch, letting the fantasy take you away from your own problems.

“…live from downtown, still unclear what exactly I’m looking at but it appears to be some kind of structure, Lisa.”

Deet deet deet deedle! Deet deet deet deedle!

The standard ringtone of your cell phone felt alarmingly loud as you slowly cleared the fog from your mind. You barely glanced at the TV screen as you groggily fumbled for the small device, hitting the green “accept” button and holding it up to your drool-covered cheek.

“Hello…?” you mumbled.

“Oh, thank god! Honey, where are you? Are you okay? What’s going on?”

You sat up with a grimace at the panic in your mother’s voice, her shrill tone a far cry from her normally calm demeanor.

“Mom? What’re you talking about?” you replied quizzically.

“The tower! It’s all over the news!!”

The confusion swirling in your mind shifted to fear as you saw the screen at last, the reporter standing before a massive grey structure in an area you easily recognized as only a few blocks away.

“…started only a few shorts hours ago. Officials are urging residents to stay indoors until they can assess the threat, but many locals have come to see the tower for themselves. Some religious groups are already flooding the area, claiming this to be a sign from God. All I can say for sure, Lisa, is that this thing is now the tallest point within three miles…”

The reporter continued talking, but you weren’t paying any attention anymore as you took in what he was talking about – the enormous grey tower that stood behind him in the shot, dominating the screen and dwarfing the mass of people crowded by its base.

What… the… fuck…?

Chaos erupted on the screen a moment later as something punched a hole through the tower, what looked like a man and a huge beast jumping down from the new opening milliseconds later. They were too far from the camera for you to see them clearly, only dim outlines in the background of the crappy TV you’d had since college.

“Did you see that?! What is going on? Honey, you need to leave before the roads get too crowded! It isn’t safe there!”

The reporter on the screen was clearly as baffled as you were, his mouth dropping open and eyes widening comically as he struggled to find words to describe the scenario. He kept glancing back to the structure as he tried to do his job, but before he had the chance to speak again, everything changed.

Something had clearly gone wrong with the camera person; the view shifted to one from the ground as if the camera had been dropped. You could hear screams and watched in bewilderment as a tendril burst from the ground, its tip a gleaming point of sharp thorns. The image of that cruel spike streaking forward to embed itself in the reporter’s stomach dissolved the last of your remaining buzz, sobriety hitting you like a brick wall as his wails of terror echoed from your TV.

“Oh, god… Y/N, get out of there now! RUN!”

“Yeah, okay. I’ll call you when it’s safe. I love you mom!” you answered hurriedly, already rushing toward the door. You stuffed your feet back into your work shoes, slung your jacket over your shoulders and grabbed your keys. Out of habit, you took a moment to lock the door behind you before sprinting down the hallway.

Outside, you got your first look at the structure for yourself.

Its massive form rose from downtown, black and imposing. You followed its outline with your stunned eyes, looking for the top but unable to find it; it was far too tall. The structure wasn’t here when you had gotten home from work, and construction couldn’t possibly have erected such an imposing thing in the scant time since then. Its origin couldn’t possibly be natural.

So… where did it come from then?

A low rumble broke your confused thoughts as you watched a tentacle burst through the asphalt ahead. Your baffled mind struggled to process the sight as the cruelly sharp tip darted down to embed itself in the stomach of another pedestrian, a scream of pain following its sickening squelch as it struck home.

Bile rose in your throat as you instinctively moved, rushing forward even as your mind screamed at you to run away. The hideous tentacle pulled back, the impaled woman falling to the ground bonelessly as it rose again to search for its next target. A surge of adrenaline gushed through you, and you somehow managed to dodge the spike as you reached forward to pull the woman out of its range. Her blood left a streak of crimson on the sidewalk behind as you dragged her to safety.

Only then did you look down, taking stock of the damage.

Her face was already frozen in death, a look of utter terror and bewilderment marring her plain features forever. You shuddered, adding her face to the ever-growing ledger of death in your mind. You stood slowly, wiping her blood on your jeans and turning away. The street was crowded by then, more and more people coming outside to see what all the noise was from.

This is bad. They’re all going to die if they stay here.

“Hey! Everybody! You can’t stand around and watch, you’ll die! Come on, let’s go!” you shouted, a scant few heads turning to listen but far too many people ignoring your warning. You marched up to a young woman tugging a child along by the hand, their faces more curious than scared. You reached out to tap her shoulder and she glanced back at you as you spoke.

“Lady, you’re gonna get yourself and your kid killed! Look, see those tentacles? I just saw one stab someone to death with just one stroke. You have to leave, now!”

She paused, her eyes shifting to see the tentacle you indicated. Her curiosity turned to fear as she took in its sharp point, giving you a grateful nod as she turned away to drag her child somewhere safe.

You repeated your dire warning to over a dozen more bystanders, but only a third of them took you seriously and ran away. You shoved your tiredness down, your long workday making your steps drag slightly as you pressed on, determined to save as many people as you could.

You watched in horror as another few tentacles sprouted from the ground, impaling a few unlucky souls and raising their bodies like trophies to the sky. More bile rose in your throat as you heard their wails of pain and confusion. You kept moving forward, still shouting warnings to anyone who’d listen. Another tentacle rumbled out of the pavement a mere three feet from where you stood, its cruel tip gleaming in the streetlights. You stumbled slightly, leaning against the brickwork of an apartment building to keep yourself from falling to the ground.

Your exhaustion tugged at you fiercely and your eyes fluttered closed against your will as the tentacle took aim at you. All thought ceased in your mind as your death approached.

With your eyes closed, you didn't see the dark-haired man sprinting at you. You didn’t see him drop a hand-carved silver cane and slide on his hip towards you as if he was stealing third base for the Yankees. You didn’t hear his low grunt as he pushed his arm out, rising to his feet just in front of you. You didn’t see the intricate pattern on his arm lighten, or the panther explode into existence mere feet in front of you, killing the tentacle with a single swipe of its lethally sharp claws almost as quickly as it had appeared.

Instead, what you next perceived was a warm hand on your side, pushing you to the right. You opened your fear-dilated eyes, shocked that you’re still alive, and immediately caught your breath.

The man who stood before you wore a look of concern on his ridiculously, unfairly handsome features. His intense gaze caught your attention first, irises the shade of muted emeralds, glinting with every flash of light. Dark eyelashes framed his long stare, thick eyebrows only adding to the expressiveness of his piercing gaze. A prominent nose flowed from his brow line above his full, pink lips, parted as he breathed heavily before you. Beautifully intricate tattoos covered his body, partially concealed by his clothing but clearly visible on his long, toned arms. The black of the ink on his skin only served to contrast his alabaster skin tone. His hair was as dark and shiny as obsidian, barely brushing the collar of his black leather vest.

"You must move, you cannot stay here!" the beautiful stranger declared urgently with a voice like velvet.

Goddamnit, could he be any more attractive?

You tried to take a step but discovered you couldn’t find the strength, your exhaustion overwhelming you at last. He paused, seeming to study your expression and huffed in irritation.

"Fine, I'll help you then," he announced, and suddenly you were against him. You blushed scarlet as he picked you up, carrying you in his lean arms towards a nearby van. The motion shook you out of your worn-out stupor enough to be embarrassed by your helplessness.

"I - I'm sorry, I think I can walk now," you told him shakily.

He gently placed your legs on solid ground with a nod. He turned to survey the area, presumably to check for more tentacles. You took a moment to search for nearby people you could warn and found a pair, shouting the now familiar warning as you saw the panther fighting. Its form shape-shifted periodically into new shapes full of sharp edges and harsh points and your mind struggled to comprehend how this was possible, trying fruitlessly to make sense of all the outlandish sights you’d seen in the last ten minutes.

What the fuck is going on?

The stranger grabbed your hand, dragging you towards the van once more, and you tried to focus on the vehicle to avoid thinking about how many of your neighbors were now dead. It was an odd contraption, clearly customized with a neon sign on the side which read “Devil May Cry” and a laughably false phone number listed beneath it. Its grey and white paint was coated in dust and what looked like blood, not all of it dry. On his way to the van, the stranger only paused to lean over and pick up an ornate silver cane, flicking it to his side in a clearly practiced motion. You found yourself once again unable to comprehend what happened next as a cloud of black shards left his tattooed arm, drifting to the air nearby and forming a magnificent blue bird, the strangest you’d ever seen with a three-pronged beak and purple legs that seemed far too large for its body.

The bird laughed and dove at the nearest tentacle, slashing it with its talons. You heard the outlandish creature curse as the tentacle tried to stab it as it attacked.

The back door of the van suddenly crashed open, drawing your attention as a white-haired man leaned out. He was young, around your age if you had to guess. An absolutely huge sword was strapped to his back, and he waved you forward with an oversized pistol in hand.

"Hurry, we gotta go NOW, V!" he hollered. He hurriedly stowed the pistol and reached out to help you inside, the dark-haired man not far behind you. To your surprise, the panther also jumped into the van. The second you were all inside, the van took off at a speed that was nearly as terrifying as almost being impaled by mysterious tentacles, accelerating faster than you imagined a vehicle of its size could manage. Outside the van, you caught a glimpse of the strange bird you saw moments ago, flapping hard to keep up with the racing vehicle.

"Hold on, folks!" a feminine voice with a southern drawl yelled from the driver’s seat. You grabbed onto the nearest solid object, an odd countertop hidden in the corner and held on for dear life as the van dashed through the city, to somewhere (you hoped) very, VERY far away.

V looked over at the young woman he'd just rescued, wondering how long it would be before you were calm enough to think clearly. Your hands were shaking, eyes wide and dilated. As he watched, your jaw clenched and your hands steadied as you inhaled deeply. You closed your eyes, let out the breath in a reassuring sigh and turned to face him as the van sped past the crowds of terrified residents, various pieces of kitchen equipment and power tools clanging at every pothole Nico drove over.

"Thank you for saving me. I... I think I would be dead if not for you," you whispered softly. Your eyes were still fearful, but you seemed coherent enough. He took a moment to gaze at you, taking in your appearance. You had gentle features; a kind face. He felt an odd sensation in his stomach as he recalled your words.

"And the maiden soon forgot her fear. Are you alright? Perhaps you ought to sit down," he responded gently and gestured at the worn couch under the window.

You nodded and cautiously made your way to it, keeping your knees bent to compensate for Nico’s wild movements. As you moved, V studied you more closely. He was curious - most civilians didn’t exhibit this level of stoic acceptance after first encountering the demonic roots, not to mention the fact that you had been actively trying to warn others and urging them to run. Your quick calmness was... intriguing. He couldn't tell if you had any demonic blood, but you obviously weren't unfamiliar with fear. No one who could calm themselves that quickly was new to the feeling, he knew.

"My name is V, that's Nero, and Nico is driving. Griffon is outside and her name is Shadow. What shall we call you?" he asked, crossing his arms and leaning against the van wall casually. He gestured to each named being as he introduced them, Griffon and Shadow returning to him as the vehicle got farther away from danger. Your eyes widened as the black shards sank into his skin.

You glanced away, quick to look elsewhere as your cheeks flush slightly, he noticed. Perhaps she’s embarrassed about needing to be saved?

"My name is Y/N. Nice to meet you all,” you responded finally. “Um, do you know what those... tentacle things were? Where did they come from?"

V smirked. This might take a while to explain.

Demons.

Demons are real.

Demons are real and attacking my home.

"Holy shit," you exclaimed, eyes wide, looking back and forth between the two men. "So, wait, how do you kill them? Why are they here? How can we stop them from killing people?"

Nero laughed, but not unkindly. He seemed genuinely amused as he sat down on your right, leaning back against the couch cushion nonchalantly.

"Slow down, Y/N! They aren't too hard to kill, at least the lower powered ones. Pretty much anything that would kill a human can kill a demon; guns, swords, punches, you get the idea. Don't really know why they're here, but V might."

V smirked, his full lips twisting in a way that made your eyes flick to them for a heartbeat too long. You scolded yourself; this isn't the time for that!

"They are here because of Urizen. The Demon King, as he calls himself. For now, we should find somewhere to rest, gather resources. As for you, Y/N, forgive me but you don't seem like you're quite up to fighting demons. We can take you to the edge of the city, but from there you must make your own way to safety."

You paused, considering his words. He wasn't wrong; you had no combat experience and didn’t know how to be helpful in a fight. Not to mention you were completely terrified, as well as you tried to conceal it.

This is insanity. These people are mad, fighting those things. We should all just run, go somewhere else and leave this city as far behind as possible.

Yet even the thought of abandoning the people still in the city felt... wrong. You didn't want to run from this, especially not with this feeling, like you were magnetized to this group. You couldn’t just walk away when so many people were dying; you had to balance the scales!

I’m going to get myself killed. What am I thinking, I can’t help people if I’m dead! But.. there are so many people here. They’re all going to die too.

You took a deep breath before speaking, brutally shoving your fear to the farthest corner of your mind and focusing on what little you could do to help the small group.

"It's true, I'm not really a fighter. I’m a nurse, and I've been studying surgical procedures to prepare for medical school. I can help you if anyone gets injured. As much as I'd like to not have to face those things ever again, it wouldn't be right if I left. I wouldn't feel right," you explained uneasily, hoping the group didn't judge you too harshly for your previous terror.

V raised an eyebrow at that, then glanced at Nero. “The thankful receiver bears a plentiful harvest,” he recited simply. Nero shrugged, and for the first time you got a good look at his right arm. You gasped as you saw the haphazard bandages covering a stump, blood stains showing in a deep rust shade, a recent amputation that clearly hadn’t been taken care of properly.

"At the very least let me dress that! You'll get an infection or sepsis; it could kill you!"

V snorted, to your surprise. "You mean he would be... dead weight?" he commented, obviously amused. His intense emerald eyes flicked to yours as if sharing an intimate joke, and you smiled at him hesitantly.

Nero turned red, muttering to himself for a moment about someone named Dante, then nodded at you sullenly. Clearly V’s words had hit a sore spot.

"Fine, when we stop you can take a look," he grumbled. He shot a glare at V, then shuffled off to sit in the front with Nico, leaving you alone with the obsidian haired man. You could hear them talking for a while but couldn't tell what they were saying. You turned back to V, mind still whirling with questions.

His long fingers pulled a thin book from within his leather vest, clearly preparing to read. You swallowed your questions for the time being, not wanting to interrupt the strange man’s reading.

I need to rest; I can barely keep my eyes open. The adrenaline must be fading.

You leaned back into the couch, reassured that with this group you could sleep in safety, closed your eyes and drifted off into oblivion.

You dreamt of the past. Your mind never blessed you with pleasant dreams anymore, always seeking to understand, to learn more from memories that your waking mind knew would bring only pain. Memory is the enemy of peace, after all.

The familiar sounds were there, as always. The crack of glass breaking and the high-pitched screams of your friend, the unmistakable sound of her gasping breaths.

Then the visuals. Shadows dancing like a sick ballet on the wall of the shed. Dead eyes staring up at you as a warning. The flash of light on gleaming steel as ---

You awakened with a jolt as Nico slammed the brakes, causing you to slide unceremoniously into V. He had sat down at some point next to you. With lightning reflexes, his arm shot out and held you close as the rattling van mercifully slid to a full stop, keeping you from falling to the floor. You could feel him breathing under you, smell his scent of leather and lavender. The combined sensory input was... intoxicating. You tried to pull away, but he held you for a split second before letting go. You blushed furiously, sure that he was teasing you. You couldn’t bear to look at him so you missed the look of regret he gave you and didn’t see him lick his lips before speaking.

"Are you alright, Y/N?" he inquired softly, his tone almost a growl.

You internally cursed his voice for having such a pleasant sound before responding.

"Yeah, thanks for the help... again."

V chuckled under his breath, then returned to his reading. Sitting so close to him, you caught a glimpse inside the pages to see a flowing script and beautifully colored illustrations. Forgetting your embarrassment and the lingering fear from the nightmare, you asked what he was reading.

"Poetry. Would you like to hear some?" he responded, his voice like warm honey.

The thought of his voice reciting poetry sent your mind spinning. Nope, no way, nuh uh, you’ve already made enough of an ass out of yourself, so you just hold your horses there, girl. There’re bigger things to be worried about anyway, like DEMONS!

"Sure,” your rebellious mouth stated.

Goddamit. Stupid mouth.

He smiled, gaze returning to the pages as he chose a piece to read.

“I will not cease from mental fight, Nor shall my sword sleep in my hand, Till we have built Jerusalem, In England’s green and pleasant land,” he recited, his voice melodious and perfectly timed.

“Beautiful,” you whispered, the words rolling in your mind as you digested them, finding meaning in the short excerpt as a low hum of recognition passed through you. “Is that… William Blake?”

V nodded, seemingly taken aback.

“You enjoy poetry?” he asked you.

You felt your cheeks tinting as he studied you intently as you replied, “I guess you could say I’m a bit of a bookworm. Literature is a gift.”

The outer corners of his lips twitched, smiling for a fraction of an instant. If you had blinked you would have missed it. He seemed pleased by your response and you smiled at him shyly, shifting your weight awkwardly.

“I couldn’t agree more, much to our companions dismay. They are of a different mindset,” he replied thoughtfully.

“What’s your favorite poem, V?” you probed him, enjoying the chance to talk with someone who shared your enjoyment of words.

“I’ve come to enjoy The Book of Thel a great deal, are you familiar?”

It rang a bell but you couldn’t remember any details of the work.

“I read it many years ago, though I can’t remember any of it now,” you responded.

“Allow me, then; Why thou complainest not when in one hour thou fade away: Then we shall seek thee but not find; ah Thel is like to thee. I pass away, yet I complain, and no one hears my voice.”

You sat in silence, letting the words sink in. V’s soothing voice added a layer of complexity to them, sounding quite sad and mournful as he recited.

Luckily for you, Nero chose that exact moment to trudge over to you with a small red box labeled "first aid". He sighed, seeming to have resigned himself to your treatment.

As if it isn't in his best interest anyway.

"Let's get this over with, Y/N," he grunted. V stood and gave you a nod as he walked away a few feet to continue his reading. You focused your mind on the task at hand, pushing the memory of his voice away.

V watched you gently remove the bandages from Nero's arm, trying to figure out his reaction to your words. None of the others he had become familiar with enjoyed poetry, several rolling their eyes the first few times he quoted a line in conversation until they became accustomed and ignored it entirely. He felt his heart warm slightly by the shared enjoyment, a distraction from his mission. A pleasant distraction, but a distraction nonetheless. He must remain focused - he didn't have time for any fellowships or pleasant conversations.

Yet still, he found himself watching you redress Nero's arm, wondering what your touch felt like. Perhaps that was it? Perhaps he simply wanted to be touched, to feel connected? That would explain most of his reactions to you so far.

Enough of this. Focus. Too much is at stake.

He mentally shook himself and returned his gaze to the words on the painted pages before him, forcing himself to pay attention and read the now familiar text.

I am in you, and you in me. Mutual in divine love.

V sighed and rolled his eyes.

How unhelpful.

He glanced back at you and Nero, seeing you smile at something the white haired warrior had said. Laughing. He wondered what that felt like as well, to share mirth in such a way with another person.

A memory played in his mind, of many years ago. It was a simple one, a trifle really. He was playing with Dante in the backyard, not long before... before. The two of them were laughing together over a fort they had built out of sticks, the structure haphazard and childish. Their mother was nearby, keeping a careful eye on them as they played.

He smiled softly at the thought, wondering if Dante had any fond memories of them as children. Somehow, he doubted it.

Again with the distractions. Enough is enough.

V looked out the window, easily spotting the already massive tree in the center of town. The sight helped him focus, helped him remember his priorities.

After removing the old bandages, you took a moment to examine the wound. It was in bad shape, looking as if Nero had initially seen a doctor but later popped the stitches in at least three places, leaving open wounds to fester and bleed freely. There was already a slight infection, but nothing too serious if he let you take care of it and didn’t do anything stupid.

“How long ago did this happen, Nero?” you asked.

“It was April 30th, so sixteen days ago,” he informed you as he watched you examine him.

“Ah, alright then. It should heal fully in about two to six more weeks, until then you need to change the bandage at least once a day, if not more,” you explained to the willful young man.

You dug through the poorly organized first aid kit, finding an unopened bottle of antiseptic and several rolls of bandages. Some gauze patches lied on the bottom.

Perfect, now all I need is a towel or a bowl.

You looked to your left and right, eventually finding a small cup that would work well enough. You carefully angled Nero’s arm over the cup and got the antiseptic ready.

“This will hurt a bit, Nero,” you warned him. He nodded, ready, and you slowly poured the fluid over his injury and let it drip into the waiting cup below. He grunted but didn’t pull away. Once the drips had slowed enough, you laid a gauze patch over his half-healed stitches, using one hand to hold it in place as your other reached to grasp the bandage roll. You used your teeth to get the first portion open, proceeding to gently but firmly wrap up Nero’s arm. You used the scissors from the kit to cut the end and secured it with a satisfied smile.

“All set,” you told him.

Nero carefully moved his arm, testing the bandage's flexibility. You knew he would, he seemed the type to never hold still if he could help it. You’d seen many people like him come through the emergency room, struggling to hold still as you treated whatever they came in for even as their lack of stillness worsened their condition.

"Feels good, Y/N! Thanks! You are handy!" He jumped up, throwing a few experimental punches, bobbing and weaving like he was in a boxing match with Muhammad Ali himself. You laughed as he feigned dodging a blow; his antics allowed you to forget the horrors of what you’d witnessed for an all-too-brief moment.

"Hey hey hey, not in the van! Take it outside, jerkwad!" Nico exclaimed hurriedly, coming out from her perch in the drivers seat. She pushed Nero towards the door, forced him outside and slammed the door behind him.

“Sheesh, what an ass…” she muttered under her breath, but you could tell she meant it with affection. She looked like she’d be happiest on a construction site or in a garage. A multitude of tools were strapped to her shorts and you could see oil on her arms, along with tattoos that seemed to revolve around guns and skulls. She pulled out a cigarette, lighting it as she leaned over to you.

“Hi, I’m Nico. Welcome to the Devil May Cry-mobile, I’m your resident genius gunsmith and artist extraordinaire. You joinin’ the team? Would be nice to have another lady along for the ride!”

Your eyes flicked to V as your thoughts debated your options again.

What about my life? What about going back to school, learning to be a trauma surgeon? Can I really justify putting that on hold, maybe even abandoning it entirely to help these people?

…How can I not?

V smirked knowingly but nodded before following Nero outside, waving his hand through a cloud of Nico’s expelled cigarette smoke as he passed.

“I guess I am,” you replied, smiling and doing your best to ignore the panic in your mind at the thought of staying in an area full of... demons. The thought of their existence brought a surreal feeling to your mind and you wondered if this entire day had been a dream. A new nightmare shaped to ensure you paid it the attention it demanded.

“Awesome! You wouldn’t happen to know how to cook, would’ja? Nero’s hopeless and V’s somehow worse, and my cooking skills don’t extend beyond cereal and mac and cheese,” she asked with a smile on her face.

You found her smile infectious, and you felt your own lips stretching into a grin as well as you responded, “I’m no master chef, but I get by all right.”

She clapped your back in a friendly manner, taking a pull from her cigarette. The tang of nicotine filled the air as she exhaled, the enclosed space holding the smoke captive. You ignored the scent, used to it after years of exposure.

“All right! Well, we’re probably gonna stay here for the night, kitchen’s in that corner if you’re hungry. The guys generally sleep outside but I think you could squeeze in here with me for now. Sound good?”

You nodded, grateful for her easy acceptance of you even as your mind still struggled to control your overwhelming fear. You found yourself warming to her quickly, despite a history of not getting along well with other women. Glancing at the kitchen, you spotted the cereal she mentioned sitting atop a stovetop. There were a few cupboards but not much else. You hoped you could gather some basic food staples in the morning, but for now the call of hunger was weaker than the call of rest. You yawned, almost cracking your jaw in the process.

“Here, I’ll get ya a pillow and another blanket, bout ready to crash myself!” Nico commented. She opened another cupboard, pulling out a small but fluffy looking pillow and a fleece blanket. She handed them to you, put out her cigarette in an ashtray nearby and gave you a salute before climbing a tiny ladder to what you assumed was a hidden bed.

“Goodnight, Nico. Thanks,” you said through another yawn. You heard a soft click and the van went dark.

“No problem, new girl. Night!”

i did the actual prompt this time! this is how Logan, a serial killer, and Roman, an actor and author, met.

Warnings: mentions of blood, suggested violence, suggested death, mention of a possible car accident, mentions of a bad break up, panic attacks/anxiety. on one hand, this is basically Fluff but on the other hand, Logan’s a serial killer. if i forgot anything, please let me know!!!

It wasn’t like Logan to join a dating app. He had never done that before, and to be honest, he wasn’t much of a romantic. He’d only ever had one relationship and, well…. And he definitely hadn’t spent over 50 hours awake in the lab after the break up, running on nothing but coffee and suppression. Definitely hadn’t cried into the empty right half of his bed, lamenting how large it was, how much more spacious it was. No, no, Logan wasn’t sentimental.

He wasn’t still upset over the break up, despite it being over a year ago. He hadn’t signed up willingly, sought out a mobile application that was as different from Tinder or, God forbid, “Grindr,” which was what one of his teaching assistants suggested. One of the graduate students he oversaw definitely hadn’t suggest he get back into dating.

He hadn’t handpicked this particular site out of an actual pool of possible matchmaking services, hadn’t weighed the pro’s and con’s of each site before electing to sign up for one that would match him with someone with similar Google searches. He hadn’t been hoping that the “similar searches” would be related to work — he hadn’t been quietly hoping to talk with a fellow chemical engineer, maybe even discuss astrophysics with someone.

He had been a little surprised to be matched based on the searches “20 pack 20 mL syringes,” “buy hydrogen peroxide near me,” and “viscosity of blood.”

Now, these weren’t necessarily work-related searches, but the person who had matched with him based on those searches had already swiped right on his profile. Logan recalled being a little confused, a little more curious, to see what this “Roman del Sol” might be doing with that sort of information. Logan himself had a solid alibi, what with his position at the university. No one could disprove that one of his pet-projects wasn’t about how blood reacted to certain chemical agents, and that would explain all three of the searches. And it wasn’t too far from the truth.

No, he hadn’t rehearsed the story in his head over and over while driving to the planetarium. It’d been his idea but Roman had accepted wholeheartedly, granted that they start at the cafe inside. “i wanna get to now you first ;P” was how he justified it, and in hindsight, Logan couldn’t believe he’d accepted a date with someone who typed like that.

Their conversations over the app were quite something. According to Roman’s profile, he was an actor, writer, and loved Disney. Upon first contact, Logan had to clarify what “loving Disney” entailed, which led them to a surprisingly heated but good-natured discussion about the ethics behind the Walt Disney Corporation becoming a monopoly of entertainment and media. Something about that led Roman to asking “r u doin anythin on friday, teach? ive got rehearsal until 6 but after that we could meet up somewhere and continue this delightful debate in person ;)” and something — Logan still couldn’t put his finger on what — but SOMETHING moved him to respond with “That would be lovely.”

So now here he was, parking in the planetarium’s lot. Logan looked at himself in his rearview mirror and straightened his tie with one hand, smoothing it down his chest slowly with his eyes trained on his own face. Dark bags had begun forming beneath his eyes, darker than a few years ago. He would have to make a larger effort to maintain his work schedule. And his skin had grown pale.

No. He shouldn’t waste time scrutinizing his own reflection like this, because he could spend hours doing so and he had to meet his date on time.

Logan held the edges of his sports coat as he exited the car, pulling his briefcase out with him. He slung the strap over his shoulder and brushed himself down once more. It didn’t hurt to want to impress, no. He just had to remember that he looked, what did Roman say, “dashing?” He looked dashing.

He checked his watch as he walked up the short path to the planetarium. He had arrived five minutes early, despite the traffic. Splendid. He could order and secure a table.

The prices were relatively understandable and the service fairly fast. Logan’s americano was sitting before him in ten minutes — meaning Roman del Sol was five minutes late. The thought ground Logan’s gears just a little, and he indulged in the meaningless frustration as he took his first sip, eyes glazed over while staring at the parking lot. Perhaps Roman had been caught up in the traffic? Or the rehearsal was running later than anticipated. Maybe he had stood Logan up. Or he’d gotten into a horrible car accident on the highway, resulting in fifteen dead and six wounded.

Reel it in. You’re turning into Virgil.

At that thought, Logan scoffed. He could never rile himself up as much as his livewire ex. Still, as his thoughts drifted back and forth between worrying about his new potential beau and anger towards his former flame, Logan couldn’t help himself in combining the two and worrying about Virgil. If Logan was taking the break up this hard, it was unlikely that Virgil was put together at all.

Now, now, Logan. Dr. Picani had said you shouldn’t decipher your past until you were ready and in a good location to do so. Maybe you are ready, but this certainly isn’t the stage, and this definitely isn’t the audience.

Speaking of theatrical metaphors, where the fuck was—

“Hello! Are you Logan?” speak of the devil.

Logan blinked, adjusting his glasses and sitting up slowly. “I, um. Yes,” he cleared his throat, a stern tone overtaking his voice as he was reminded that he’d been waiting for — he glanced at the clock on the wall — 23 minutes. “You must be Roman.”

His eyes trailed up and he had to mentally withhold from a verbal exclamation. Before him was, well, the most stunningly beautiful man he’d ever seen. Roman’s profile photos were true to life, hair swept lazily to the side, a dazzling playful smirk on his face as his slender fingers curled around the empty chair at Logan’s table. He was wearing a dark brown coat with a vibrant red scarf wrapped loosely around his neck, coat unbuttoned just enough to reveal a white and gold prince’s outfit beneath.

“Sorry I’m so late, rehearsal ran late and then the traffic was unbearable! I didn’t want to be too late, though, so I didn’t change out of my costume,” Roman slid into the empty seat, leaning forwards with his arms on the table, “It’s a pleasure to meet you in the flesh, Specs.”

He reached a hand out to Logan’s, which he assumed was to shake. Roman had a fairly firm grip and his hand was warm, warmer than Logan’s surely. Once they let go, Roman leaned forward on both of his elbows, smiling cheekily.

“I know we disagreed on a lot regarding Disney, but you must admit I was right about one thing,” his voice had a purr in it, almost like a cat.

Roman’s tone didn’t change the fact that Logan was definitely not giving up ground on their Disney argument. “Oh?” he raised an eyebrow, picking up his mug slowly, “About what?”

“You do look handsome. As dashing a prince as I’ve ever seen.”

Logan straightened up, a bright red flush overtaking his face. Oh. He cleared his throat and reached down for his coffee. “High praise coming from the man actually dressed as a prince,” two could play the flirtation game.

“A Scottish nobleman, thank you very much!” However, it seemed that Roman was more well-versed. “First, though, I would love to know when your birthday is.”

Their conversation bounced around, from astrology to astronomy, to the possible colonization of Mars, to civilization, and Logan was honestly refreshed by how quickly Roman was able to keep up with him regarding depth of knowledge. They did seem to disagree on a lot, such as how accurate astrology charts were, though Logan was as willing to overlook Roman’s acute knowledge of astrology as Roman was to overlook the apparently blasphemous fact that Logan was a Capricorn.

An hour or two of conversation had passed before Roman swept his hand through his hair, laughing heartily at something Logan must have said. They were on the topic of plays, since Roman’s current role was Macduff in Macbeth for the fall Shakespeare festival, and Logan had made an offhand comment about washing the theater blood from Roman’s pristine white outfit. Really, Logan knew nothing about theater. He considered it “professional make believe,” though the nature of poetic verse did intrigue him enough to actually read a few Shakespeare plays.

“What’s so comedic?” Logan asked, hand tracing around the rim of his empty mug.

“Oh, well, you know. You mentioning blood reminded me of the searches that crossed our paths,” Roman’s hand ran back, cupping the back of his neck as he chuckled a little more, looking not at Logan but out the window to his left.

Logan had almost forgotten that that was what they were meeting over. His back straightened, sitting upright.

He knew exactly why he’d been searching about syringes, hydrogen peroxide, and blood. He was more interested to hear why Roman was. And while he wasn’t nervous in the slightest (had Roman been a threat, Logan would have no trouble in alerting the authorities), Roman grew more jittery at the topic.

“....It’s always a little difficult to explain, but, well. I always end up searching the weirdest of things,” Roman shot him a tiny, lips pulled tight smile, “Usually it’s for reference, as an author. I’m working on a murder mystery novel.”

Ah. Logan nodded. “That would explain the blood viscosity search,” he said.

“Mhm. And you hit the nail on the head with the white outfit, actually,” Roman grabbed his costume’s sleeve and rolled it over, showing Logan the back part of his right arm.

There were a multitude of tiny light brown dots, barely visible on the white fabric. Logan raised his eyebrows.

“The information’ll definitely come in handy regarding my book, but what happened here was that I was stitching on new trimmings and kept poking myself in the hand. Eventually, well….I’m not the best tailor and I had to figure out a way to clean the fabric. The searches before that were probably ‘how to get blood off of clothes’ and ‘what’s hydrogen peroxide,” Logan snorted at the second search, to which Roman grinned, “Hey! Not all of us are chemists.”

“Chemical engineer,” Roman rolled his eyes and, despite the small flare of annoyance at the fairly common mistake, Logan felt something warmer well up at the sight of his small smile. He wanted to see more. “And you added the trimmings yourself? I thought there was a costuming department or such.”

“No, well, this is actually one of my personal costumes. It’s from when I played Cinderella’s prince in a production of Into the Woods a few years ago. The director for that is the same director working with us for the Scottish play, and to cut costs he asked if I could reuse the costume. With a few modifications, of course,” Roman smoothed out his outfit once more, smiling lopsidedly at Logan now.

“Of course,” Logan felt himself smile back, fondly watching Roman fiddle with the costume. He wanted him to keep talking.... “And you mentioned a book, correct?”

A spark jumped through Roman’s eyes and his face lit up. He clasped his hands on the tabletop, leaning forward as he did so. “My book! I don’t, oh, I don’t want to spoil too much, but it’s a murder mystery novel! I’m just working on the first draft and research right now but once it’s out, oh once it’s out!”

Logan didn’t want to press Roman for details but....a murder mystery novel? That was his one of his favorite genres. And, well. Was his life. “A murder mystery? I won’t ask you to spoil it, but I am excited to read it,” he pushed his glasses up, watching Roman’s face glow brighter.

“Oh, maybe I’ll tell you a little! There’s definitely romance involved, but the beautiful beau at the center of it all has no clue who to trust. Does he trust the dashing but stoic doctor, or the charmingly focused detective, or maybe the righteous journalist following him around? Oh, it’s the mystery of the century!” Roman laughed, excitement laced through his voice, and Logan found the laughter to be contagious.

“I’m excited for it,” he reiterated, unsure of what else to say.

Roman nodded energetically, now sliding his coat off. Something about the motions must have reminded him of the other pressing question in his mind, though, because his grin faltered for a second. It was up as quick as it went, however, and Roman asked “But what on earth were you doing searching about blood?”

The moment of truth. But Logan had long since become an expert at explaining that part of his life. He didn’t even have to draw in a breath, he just let his own giddiness ride itself out before answering. “It’s quite boring, compared to your story. All three of the searches were about work. I’m running a study on blood clotting agents at my lab. While I was the one bulk buying hydrogen peroxide and syringes, for the study, one of my graduate students was doing background research on, well. Blood.”

There was a bead of pause. Logan wasn’t nervous, no, but he could hear his own blood pumping. A quickened pulse meant nervousness. But he wasn’t nervous.

Roman was still looking out the window. For someone exuberantly animated, Logan thought, Roman was being very quiet at these revelations. He had an eyebrow quirked up as he seemed to watch the outside world. Logan couldn’t help but worry that Roman didn’t believe his story, but what wasn’t there to believe? It wasn’t an entire falsehood, only a few omitted details and one large fabrication. Did Logan not look like he’d run studies on blood?

“See, Professor Plum, you say that’s boring, but that honestly sounds quite fascinating.”

Logan blinked and watched Roman’s mouth curve into a small smile. He faced back towards Logan with a wide, supportive grin. “Blood clotting agents? For what, medical purposes? That sounds groundbreaking.”

Well — “Such a thing already exists, though in fairly unstable forms,” Logan adjusted his glasses, “We’re just working on, ah, making a less costly version.”

“Less costly? Like, the ingredients?”

“Precisely.”

Logan didn’t miss how Roman’s eyes widened, how they seemed to sparkle. Was that wonder? He hadn’t pegged Roman as the type to be so excited over scientific discoveries. “That sounds amazing! Really impressive, Logan,” his voice had a sort of breathlessness, was Roman really that impressed?

He seemed to catch himself, though. Roman leaned back and crossed his legs, the same Cheshire grin he’d been wearing all night returning to his face. “So you’re beautiful and a genius,” he hummed, voice as warm as his hands had been.

Logan couldn’t help but let out a breath as the rest of his face turned red at the praise. “I, well….thank you,” he also couldn’t help the little smile that grew on his face.

It fell in a second, though, when he realized Roman hadn’t disclosed all of his search reasons. “Wait. Why were you searching for syringes?”

And now it was Roman’s turn to turn red. A small laugh escaped his lips and his fingers drummed against his upper lip, a habit that did not escape Logan’s notice. “Well, it’s a long story. The summary is that I was trying to do that thing with flowers and food coloring, you know? I, ah….was trying to make a bouquet, and I needed a lot of syringes.”

Flowers and food coloring? “Can you elaborate? What do you mean, flowers and food coloring?”

Roman waved his hand now, a little dismissively. “Oh, t’was a bold dream. I’m not as good with precise measurements and such as you seem to be. There’s this thing you can do where, if you split the stem of a white rose, you can soak it in dyed water to change the color? You typically split up the stem and leave the different parts to soak in glasses with different colored water in them. I was trying to make a bouquet of rainbow flowers but, well….after a few days, it was clear that something had gone wrong. And after a week, I gave up on it.”

“You….you needed syringes. For that?”

Logan couldn’t help the incredulity that filled his tone. Roman gave him a tiny glare, shoulders hiking up — the way his brow furrowed, despite the evident frustration, was adorable. Logan didn’t expect this to be going so well, to be falling so hard for this dumbass, but it seemed he was still capable of being surprised. Roman…..wasn’t continuing, though. He just raised an eyebrow at Logan, face still stiff in a frown.

Was there some social cue Logan was missing? Was he supposed to know how to color roses? He shrugged. Surely he couldn’t expect that “I have never attempted to color roses, thus I am unaware.”

Roman kept watching him with a guarded expression, arms crossed around himself. Logan must have stepped out of line in some way. He had half a mind to apologize when Roman finally lowered his shoulders and cleared his throat. “No, no, you’re right. It….technically it wasn’t necessary.”

He’d bounced back fast. “But it was oh so fun. Almost like my own little experiment,” Roman smiled at him, “I like it when things are just perfect.”

“Of course, completely understandable,” Logan elected to not acknowledge Roman’s moment, “Did the roses turn out….okay?”

“They did! They were for Pride, of course, and they were beautiful!” Roman laughed.

And so they continued. Pride, homosexuality in the media, Star Wars movie theories, Star Wars versus Star Trek. Debates, bickering, insults with no bite behind them. It felt….

It felt like Logan was falling from a tall building. He’d never clicked so well with someone. And he certainly lost track of time.

“‘Scuse me, babes, but we’re closing!” Logan and Roman both turned towards the cafe’s desk, where the barista who had served the both of them was waving, “I’m gonna have to ask ya to leave!”

Logan checked his watch. Had they really talked for three hours? That must mean the planetarium was closed, too.

“Damn, well. We missed the planetarium,” Roman put his phone down and let out a breath, “I can’t say I’m too upset! It would have been lovely, of course, but I got to spend the night with an even more delightful star.”

He held out his phone towards Logan, whose ears were turning red with embarrassment. “I guess we’ll have to do this again sometime,” his voice was soft as Logan’s hand brushed over his to take the phone.

Logan felt himself smile downwards as he typed his information into Roman’s phone. “I would like that very much, Roman. Your company has been most enjoyable.”

“You, too, Spock.”

Lena stalks through the DEO control room as quick as her Louboutin’s will take her. She’d received the text from Alex not ten minutes ago. ‘Need you at the DEO, Kara blew her powers.’ Short and simple, an indication that Alex was hard at work to make sure her sister was okay.Lena kicks off her heels and takes the stairs two at a time to reach the medbay, taking in Kara’s pale form passed out in the cot.“She okay?” Lena asks as she enters. Alex doesn’t even glance up at her, too focused on the needle currently in Kara’s arm. She so rarely was without her powers that Alex usually took the opportunity to do some blood tests and check on Kara’s general health as well.“She’ll be perfectly fine. Probably very groggy when she wakes up because she’s on the good stuff.” Alex gestures vaguely at the IV stand attached to her bed, and Lena can just make out a morphine label on one of the bags. Not uncommon for when Kara blew out her powers. She hadn’t had much experience with pain, especially human levels of pain.Taking a few deep breaths, Lena nods slowly. Kara losing her powers isn’t new, but worrying all the same. She sinks into the chair on the other side of Kara’s bed. It only takes a few hours for Kara to come around. She wakes up confused, but recognises Alex on sight. Lena lets out a long exhale in relief. Pushing herself out of her chair, Lena finally catches Kara’s eye.“Woah!” Kara croaks slowly, drawing out the word for a long few moments. She turns to whisper none too subtly to Alex.“Alex! Standing there.” Kara garbles a shaky hand gesturing to Lena. “She can’t be real. She’s too pretty.”Then Kara turns to Alex, tears suddenly gathering in the corners of her eyes. “Am I dying, Alex?”Alex rushes to comfort her. “No, no sweetie. You aren’t dying. That’s not an angel, it’s Lena.”“You know her?!” She squeaks eyes flickering to Alex for only a second at a time before refocusing on Lena. Alex snorts, clapping a hand over her mouth.Kara lolls her head, speaking from the side of her mouth like it might stop Lena, who is less than two feet away, from being able to hear her.“You gotta introduce us.” She begs, full force puppy eyes included.Snickering, Alex nods and gestures to Lena. “Kara, this is Lena.” Alex then turns to Lena, a mischievous glint in her eye. “Lena, this is Kara. My sister.”Lena grins, and plays along.“Very nice to meet you, Kara.”“I would die for you.” Kara blurts bluntly.“Kara, oh my god.” Alex mutters, dropping her face into her hands. Barely fighting back her laughter, Lena pulls her chair a little bit closer and sits back down.“That’s very kind of you, Kara.” “I think I’m gay.” Kara says, eyes never leaving Lena.Alex doubles over, shoulders shaking in an effort to contain herself.“Why do you say that?” Alex asks shakily, wiping at her watery eyes.Kara splutters in indignation, eyes wide, as she launches into a heavily slurred ramble.“Have you seen Lena? You know her! You haf’ta have seen her. She’s beautiful and pretty and- damn!” Kara swears loudly. “Her eyes are so green, like the moons of Synsesia. It’s this planet my father took me too when I was little, and the moons are big and green. I remember thinking it was the prettiest thing I ever seen. Until now of course, cause Lena is obviously the prettiest thing I ever seen and- crap!” Kara cuts herself off abruptly and looks at Alex in fear. “She’s not supposed to know I’m an alien!” She whispers loudly.Lena leans in and whispers. “It’s okay, I already know.”“You already know?!” Kara asks, bewildered. “How?”Before Lena can answer, Kara gasps dramatically. “Are we friends?”Lena smirks. “You could say that.”Kara smiles, and then frowns. She looks down at her lap and pouts.“What’s wrong, sweetie?” Lena asks, leaning forward and taking one of Kara’s hands in both of her own. It takes a good few moments before Kara can focus on forming an answer, staring down at their joined hands in awe. Lena can hear Alex’s snickering a few feet behind her and fights to block it out, in fear of bursting out laughing herself. “I don’t wanna be friends. You’re too pretty for just friends.” Kara spits the word ‘friends’ like it had personally offended her. Lena smiles. “You want to be more than just friends?” Kara lights up, her thousand watt smile shining brighter than the sun lamps built into the bed. “Are you single?”Alex snorts loudly.“Unfortunately not.” Lena answers Kara, feigning a sad look. She almost regrets it when Kara looks heartbroken.“You have a boyfriend?” Kara mumbles dejectedly.“No,” Lena holds up her left hand. “I have a wife.”“A wife?” Kara asks, her pout still firmly in place.“Yes, she’s a beautiful blonde woman. About five foot nine, wears glasses and some very cute cardigans.” Lena starts, almost giggling when Kara’s eyes narrow slightly.“She has these striking blue eyes that I could stare into for hours at a time. She’s very strong, so strong she could lift a building even.” As Lena rambles on, Kara’s eyes get more narrow by the second. “She’s very kind, and caring. She’s out of this world.” Lena smirks. “Wait a minute…” Kara slurs. “What’s your wife’s name?”Lena grins. “Her name is Kara.”Kara blinks. Then gasps.“M-me?”Lena leans forward and gently tugs at the chain around Kara’s neck, pulling her wedding ring out of her T shirt and cradling it in the palm of her hand.“Yes, you.”Kara stares at her ring, then at Lena’s ring. She looks up. “I’m your wife?”“Yep.” Lena giggles.“Woah.” “Mhm.”“When did we get married?” “Almost two years ago.”“Woah!”Lena’s grin widens. “Alex!” Kara calls to her sister.Alex somehow manages to pull it together long enough to stumble back over to the bed. “Yeah, Kara?”“I have a wife!”“You do.”“How did I do that?”Alex and Lena share a look as they giggle. “I don’t know, kid. I don’t even know how I did it.”Kara stares at Alex, unblinking. “YOU have a wife too?!”Before Alex can answer, a short burst of laughter by the door has all three of them turning to find Maggie standing in the doorway, her phone pointed at them.Maggie looks up from the screen with a wide grin.“I cannot wait to show her this when she’s sober.”

summary: he was such a staple piece in your life, that as a child and young teen, you never saw your life without him. late night promises and pinky swears were made in blanket forts that you two would be friends until the day the sun burned out in the sky. it was just a given that’d he be there, that you never worried about the two of you drifting apart or being separated. he promised he’d always be there, and you had believed him. you now corrected yourself, foolishly believed him.

chapter ii

Unlike Jonathan, Steve didn’t mind that if you smoked in his car, he even asked to bum one. Steve looked distressed and the way he was exhaling seemed tight and shaky. You wanted to ask him if he was okay to drive but the words never left your lips. The two of you sat in complete silence as he drove, you weren’t even sure where you were going, but decided to only push the issue if you started to feel uneasy or in danger. But once the car took a left turn down a long street flanked by trees, you knew exactly where you two were headed. His house. You hadn’t been there since the eighth grade, but as the two of you pulled up, nostalgia and memories flooded over you.

“This place still looks the same.” You commented causally, just trying to break the silence.

Steve didn’t say anything, just got out of the car and started towards the house. A little offended by his attitude, you followed, but not before slamming his car door loud. He flinched at the sound but didn’t turn around. Once you both reached the front door he muttered something about making yourself at home before he walked off into the kitchen.

It felt weird being in his house. It was like you had been away from home for years and were just now returning. Everything felt warm and familiar, but you were trying to hold up your cold indifference about the whole thing. You were still taking in the sights of his living room when you heard the sound of the sliding glass being opened, but not shut. You walked towards the door and looked out into the back yard to see Steve sitting on the edge of one of the beach chairs facing his pool. There were two beers sitting in front of him, but the distance of them apart made it clear that one was for him and the other was for you. You took the hint and walked into the back yard. You sat in the chair closest to Steve and your new beer and took a drink of it. When you looked at Steve he was lost in thought. The reflection of the water and pool lights dancing across the planes of his face in such a way that you wished you had a camera to capture the quiet perfection of the moment.

“Bullshit.” He said, not angrily, but like he was recalling something.

“Hmm?” You asked, mouth full of beer.

“Nancy told me at the party that me, our relationship and our love has all be bullshit.” He shrugged sadly.

You sat in silence again. You had no clue what to say.

“I’m sorry.” You settled for.

“Me too.”

“I’m sure she didn’t mean it. People say stupid shit when they’re mad.” You continued.

“Yeah, but not like this. You don’t say this if you’re just mad.” Steve said.

“Yeah.” Was all you could say in return. Nothing else would have helped.

Steve Harrington was reeling in heart ache and you couldn’t say a thing to make it better. This whole night felt weird. Like a dream? It felt to eerie sitting with Steve like this. It didn’t seem right for you to be consoling him when you were sure he’d rather be with one of his actual friends right now.

“Do you want me to call someone? Like someone who could do a better job of cheering you up?” You joked slightly.

He shook his head in a shocking seriousness.

“No.”

Silence again.

“You can go if you really want to.” Steve said, he was still looking at the water.

You sighed, “I want to help you, Steve. That’s what I want, but I have no idea how. I haven’t done this in a while.”

He chuckled macabrely, “You can’t pull out any of your old tricks to make me smile like when we were kids?”

“Well, I’m pretty sure my PhD in Steveolgy has expired, so I don’t think any of my old tricks would work.”

“Can PhD’s expire?” He questioned.

“I don’t know, let’s pretend they do so my analogy works, okay?” You said, and he nodded and laughed quietly in response.

“I wish you still had the Steveolgy PhD. I wish I had the (Y/N)olgy one, too. It would make things a lot easier.” He sighed, taking a drink.

“How so?”

“Everything was always just easier with you around.” For the first time he looked over at you.

When you looked at him, you wondered if he thought you looked beautiful with the pool lights reflecting on your face like you thought he did. You looked at him and thought about how he was right, things were easier when he had been around. Life had been simple. They had been happy. Steve seemed to let his eyes trail around your face in a calm moment where neither of you said a word. Just stared. That’s when a piece of your indifferent resolve shattered and you realized that no matter how long it has been since you two talked or hung out or what have you, you always wanted him to be happy… to help him.

You got up without silently and walked to the small shed of pool supplies on the grass. You heard him question you, but you just kept looking for what you wanted and came back out.

“Okay Harrington,” You said placing the basketball down to take off your shoes and socks, “game to ten, fifteen if we get competitive. No cheap shots, if you can make it from this line,” You motioned to where you were standing, “Then that’s two points, deal?”

“Are you kidding?” He asked with a laugh.

“Absolutely not! Now get your ass in the pool.”

“We don’t have swimsuits.”

“I know.” You said stripping off your sweater so you were left in nothing but your jeans and a white tshirt.

Steve’s eyes widened. He started to think that you were both stripping down to nothing to play and wasn’t going to object until he saw you jumped in with all of your current clothing on. He couldn’t deny the pang od disappointment.

Once you surfaced, your teeth started to chatter.

“Fuck! Tell your parents to heat this, will ya?”

“Will do.” He laughed, a genuine smile gracing his lips as he jumped in, fully clothed, shoes and all, into the pool after you.

You weren’t exactly an athlete, and the combination of the freezing water and the star player you were against, didn’t really make for a fair game. You had stated in the rules that there weren’t to be any cheap shots, but that were basically the only points you made. From splashing Steve to get the ball to pretending you were hurt to catch his off guard to steal the ball with a smirk. The two of you were having fun, and it surprised you how natural it all felt. Just like you were falling back into old patterns. Steve seemed at ease now, and even if he wasn’t, at least this was a good distraction.

“Maybe my PhD is still very much valid.” You thought cheerfully to yourself as Steve made his fifteenth basket.

“Oh!” He said mockingly, “Looks like it’s now fifteen to four.”

“I know like ten of those points you were cheating so we aren’t counting those ones.” You countered back as the ball floated towards you.

“Man, still a sore loser, aren’t you?” He quirked an eyebrow.

“Oh, shut up!” You splashed him and tried to hold back a grin.

“I’m cold, I’m getting out.” You said, but Steve stopped you.

“Where do you think you’re going, (Y/L/N)? You haven’t even dunked one yet.”

“Uh yeah, because I’m pretty sure I don’t have the means to do that.” You laughed awkwardly as you made your way towards the edge.

“I’ll help you, then we’ll be tied and then, only then, can we go inside.”

“Tied? Seriously?”

“Ten of my points didn’t count, remember?”

You finally let the small smile overtake you as you looked at Steve and shrugged. You grabbed the basketball and Steve swam behind you. He grabbed your waist tight with both hands and thrust you into the air, just high enough so you could tip the ball over the rim of the hoop to have it fall down through the basket.

“And the crowd goes wild!” Steve exclaimed, making faux cheering and chanting as you laughed.

You two were now back to being submerged to your shoulders in the water, but Steve didn’t let go of your waist. You turned in his arms and he allowed this, but still held you firm. Once you were facing him, you were almost touching your nose with his. Both of you stopped moving and just stood there, the only sound was of the water splashing around you, which caused you both to sway slightly back and forth with it. You felt your breath hitch and everything faded away. The smell of chlorine and Steve Harrington filled your senses and it was surprising pleasant. The feeling of his arms wrapped tightly around you made stomach tighten and your head feel hazy. All you could think about was his skin touching your own.

Steve seemed to be thinking everything you were, as you felt his hand settle briefly on your cheek and slowly drag down to let his fingers ghost along the edge of your lips. His eyes followed his hands and you were just starring at him with a passionate intensity that you hadn’t given in quite some time.

When he finished his movements, his eyes flashed from your own to your lips and you panicked.

This wasn’t how he was going to kiss you. Not like this.

You snapped out of your daze, and removed his hands from your waist.

“My clothes are sopping wet and I’m freezing so I vote we head in.” You said as normally and causally as you could.

“Yeah, let’s go.” Steve said in the same manner, but the shared knowledge about what almost just happened lingered between you two.

Steve had ushered the two of you to his bedroom and had gotten you a towel,a pair of his sweatpants and an old t-shirt of his to wear.

You smiled and accepted them.

“I’m going to go change in the bathroom, so feel free to change in here.” He said as he walked to the door.

You said okay and thanked him and he left you alone in his bedroom.

His room looked almost identical. It was less cluttered with posters and magazines than you remembered, and he had a new bed and duvet cover, but other than that, everything was in its place. As you dried yourself off you walked to a picture that was framed on his work desk. It was a photo of him and Nancy. It was proper, they were both in high necked thick sweaters and Nancy sat on his knees and he had his arm around her waist. They both smiled so beautifully and you felt a wave of sadness roll over you. They both looked happy and in love, but picture Steve had no idea it was all a farce. You decided to turn the photo away so neither you or Steve could see it.

You peeled away your clothes and put on his. After looking at yourself in the full-length mirror in his room you smiled. You had a strange sense of pride wearing his clothes. You weren’t sure if they were exceptionally comfortable or if anything would have been comfortable after you had been in your dripping wet clothes.

You sat on the edge of his bed and waited for Steve to remerge. When he did, he knocked before he entered.

“So,” He began, “I don’t want you walking home this late, so I think you should just stay the night and I’ll drive you home in the morning.”

“Okay.” You replied.

“You can have my room and I’m just going to be in the guest room down the hall if you need me.” He scratched the back of his neck and gestured towards the hallway.

You laughed, “Remember when your parents sat us down when we were eleven and told us it wasn’t “appropriate” for us to sleep in the same bed anymore?”

“Yeah?”

“Well your parents aren’t here, and I know we both thought it was a stupid rule anyways.” You smiled at him and patted the spot next to you.

Steve smiled back at you and agreed. You both got under the covers, and stayed an “appropriate” distance from one another.

“Remember when my mom got me that really expensive blanket, the cashmere one? And told us not to use it for forts, but then, y’know we used it for forts,” Steve spoke, a smile in his voice

“Because it was the softest and best of the ground layer, yes I remember.” You replied nonchalantly.

“Yeah, and then we fell asleep in the fort and someone spilled that entire bottle of grape soda on it.”

You both laughed.

“I honestly thought she was going to murder us!”

“You don’t even know the half of it! At least you got to go home, I lived here! She made life a passive aggressive hell!”

You laughed and covered your face with your hands.

“Remember when our parents had that dinner party for our dads work friends and we both threw up?” You asked through your hands.

“Holy shit! Yes! Fuck, how did I almost forget about that?” Steve exclaimed.

“It wasn’t even my fault! When I see people puke I puke, and you started it!” You were laughing so hard now.

“It was food poisonings fault not mine!” He was laughing just as hard.

“Wait, do you remember when we stole my dad’s car to go to Diary Freeze?” Steve said, turning on his side to face you.

“Of course.” You said, doing the same.

“How the hell did we get away with that?” You added.

“Beats me! We were so un-stealthy about it and nervous wrecks the next day at breakfast.”

“Oh God, when your dad reached for him keys I swore you were going to fess up!” He laughed and nudged you.

“No way, solidarity, man.” You smiled at him.

The two of you just smiled and let the laughing die down until the room was quiet. You borrowed your head deeper into your pillow and sighed contently. You were happy. Until Steve spoke again.

“What happened to us?”

Your eyes glanced up and his face was forlorn. You always thought if he ever asked you that, you’d give him a speech about how he was a jock asshole and how he ditched you. But now didn’t seem like the right time. Tonight had shifted things, if only a little.

“People grow apart. We were best friends, now we aren’t. Not a tragedy, just life.” You spoke more frankly than you guessed he’d liked by his response.

“So, it doesn’t ever make you sad? Like ever?” He seemed a little angry now.

“I mean, yeah. But what was I going to do? Go beg for you back while you sat at a table full of girls fawning for your attention alongside Tommy and those other popular guys? Yeah, no. I decided to save myself the embarrassment.” You were getting a little mad now too.

“You could of, I wouldn’t have minded.” Steve said in a softer voice.

Now this really pissed you off.

“Yeah you would’ve, Steve. You made it clear that we weren’t friends anymore after eighth grade. I had nothing to do with that.”

“No, I didn’t! You could’ve still hung out with me!” He was sitting up now.

“I didn’t want to! You cut me off like dead weight and I didn’t want to be somewhere I wasn’t wanted. I found my new clique while you found yours. Stop saying all this stuff and acting like this great guy when you and I both know you ditched me to fuck hot girls and hang out with the popular kids.” You didn’t sit up, you just turned away from him.

“I was having a shitty night, so thanks for making it worse.” He snapped back at you.

“Fine, I’ll leave then.” You threw the blankets off of yourself.

“No!” Steve exclaimed, grabbing your wrist.

“Don’t, I just, fuck, it’s just, dammit!” He stammered.

“Just don’t leave. I’m sorry.”

You hesitantly laid back down and in turn accepted his apology. He held your wrist until the both of you were under the covers again.

“I’m sorry, just for everything, okay? Not just tonight.” You knew what he meant.

You wanted the apology not to be enough, but for now it was.

“It’s okay. I’m sorry, too.” Steve nodded at this.

You turned away from him and shut your eyes, you felt him do the same. But there was something else you wanted to say before you slept.

“Steve?”

“Yeah?”

“She doesn’t fucking deserve you.”

You woke up at five in the morning, wrapped in Steve’s comforter and to your surprise, his arms. You were pressed securely to his chest and his chin was resting on the crown of your head. You reveled in the feeling. It was safe and familiar and if you could have stayed in one moment, you wish it would have been this one forever. You wanted to be in a moment like this with Steve Harrington since you were in the seventh grade. That’s when he wasn’t just Steve Harrington your best friend, he was Steve Harrington, your love interest. But even then, you were a master at masking your emotions, and never let on to him, or anyone your growing feelings. Maybe that was why it stung so bad when he abandoned you. You never let yourself call him your first love, because you never wanted to believe that you had ever loved him romantically. Sure, you had an intense crush, but that was all. Once you got love involved, it seemed more serious than you wanted it to be. But, then again, maybe Jonathan was onto something that night when he said Steve was an idiot for not loving you back. Maybe you did, had and presently were in love with Steve?

You had had a few other boys catch your eye in your life, but none ever like him. And now that you were being honest with yourself, the night you lost your virginity, you had thought, if only briefly, that you wished it had been to Steve.

All these thoughts and realizations where making your skin feel hot and breathing quicken. Suddenly his arms felt restricting, like they were keeping you from inhaling. Your palms felt slick and you head swirled trying to calm yourself down.

You had to get the fuck out of there.

You quietly and gingerly slipped out of Steve’s arms, taking a moment to memorize the carefree expression on his face before tip toeing to your wet clothes. You scooped them into your arms, though they were still damp, and made your way to the door. You gave one fleeting look to Steve and pondered leaving a note but decided against it. You wanted to leave without a trace. You weren’t sure why, but that’s what you wanted. When you were downstairs, you found your shoes, socks and sweater by the sliding glass door from the night before, and you were thanking your past self for not swimming in them so they were dry when you put them on. You went to the front door, but unlike in Steve’s room, didn’t take one last glance around. You just left and started your cold, thought riddled walk back home.

there’s no person in particular that really sticks out but I will say I’ve always admired jungkook, and really all trainees for that matter, who leave their families to start training really young because its a process thats hard physically, emotionally and mentally for late teen/early twenties trainees but there’s sO many kids who enter in their pre-teens and idk how they survive also I realized this doesn’t answer your question at all I'm sorry its 1:28 AM I’m just waiting for the DNA mv to drop

english and some spanish??? So I’ve been busy reading The Infernal Devices and falling in love with Will. But I hope you like this chapter (we’re nearing the end of the story unless I find more to fill before the oh so beautifully fluffy ending)

Chapter 15

I heard waves. At least that’s what it sounded like, waves crashing against the shore. But I couldn’t be dead, no it was too painful for me to be free of the real world. Death was supposed to be peaceful, to be beautiful. The pain throbbed in rhythm with the water that was trying to drown me. Nothing made sense, I had barely made it through the woods before I fell. Before I had given up and waited for Tomas or death to find me.

There weren’t any waves here, not that I could remember. But the water kept rushing in, my lungs felt like they were on fire. I was confused, disoriented. I had no idea what had happened in the last few minutes. I couldn’t remember why my body felt so broken. I couldn’t think about anything but the pain, the water rushing into my stomach and making me feel sick.

Darkness tried to pull at me again. It tried to take me under the current.

But then a voice broke through the waves. A voice, it was the light at the end of the dark tunnel. I fought to find my way towards it. I fought to find the tether that kept me in this world.

"Nesta? Nesta can you hear me?" A deep voice called to me. It broke through the water, the pain trying to drown me. I couldn't open my eyes, but I knew that voice. I held onto it, trying to find my way to it, "sweetheart please. I'm here. I've got you."

A tear hit my cheek and somehow I found the light, "Cassian," I whimpered as I felt his arms come around me. I clung to his shirt, my mind trying to catch up to the racing of my heart. I could still taste the blood in my mouth, but his scent wrapped around me.

It calmed me; because he smelled like home.

"I'm here," he said again softly. I felt the soft kiss of his lips on my forehead, then against my temple. I buried my face in his shirt, "I'm here."

"It hurts," I whispered as he picked me up slowly, gently so he didn't hurt me more. I winced at the movement, my eyes still closed. I wanted to open them, to see his beautiful brown eyes and know he was real. But I couldn’t find the strength to do anything but hold onto him.

"I know. I'm sorry, so sorry I didn't get here faster," his voice broke. I held onto him tighter. He was my anchor keeping me here in this world, keeping me conscious.

"But you're here now," I mumbled, "you're here. You came.”

He laughed and it made the pain fade slightly, if only for a moment. He put his face closer to mine, his breath warm against my skin.

"Nesta." He said my name softly as he walked towards more voices. I was fading, the pain was taking me over, "I love you too."

I smiled as he set me down on a soft surface. There were other voices, high and hard voices giving instructions, but I couldn’t focus. I felt the loss of Cassian’s warmth and my heart sank. He let me go, but it didn't last long, his hand finding mine once the pain found me again.

And then when I knew he was still there beside me, I surrendered to the darkness that followed.

Cassian was holding my hand. I knew it before I even opened my eyes. I could feel him, I could hear him thinking if I tried hard enough. It was the weight of his heavy hand, the hands that had made me come alive in those moments between my bedsheets. I knew him, I knew him even after only knowing him for a few days. He was my person, he had finally found his way in.

He had his fingers laced through mine. I let out a breath and then opened my eyes as slowly as I could. The lights blinded me, that throbbing wasn’t my heart, it was an ache in my head. I winced as I felt his fingers tighten around mine.

“Nesta." His voice was rough, like he hadn’t used it after screaming from a really long time.

I coughed, "I thought it was a dream. I didn't think. I mean. You came to save me."

Tears filled my eyes as they found his. He was smiling but it didn't reach his eyes. He looked tired, there were bags under his eyes. He looked as if he hadn’t slept in days, "it wasn't a dream, sweetheart. I'm here."

He pressed a kiss to my forehead, “Cassian."

I struggled to sit up and Cassian helped me, “how long have I been out?”

He leaned in and kissed me softly, as if he couldn’t wait another moment. Like it was too painful for him to wait for me. He let out a slow breath, pushing my now short and very uneven hair out of my face, “two days. Tomas had you for one full day before I got to you. I’m sorry Nesta. I should’ve known, I should’ve gotten to you faster.”

I pressed my finger against his lips, “we didn’t know he would do something like that. You saved me. You were the voice that kept me fighting,” I sighed, the movement hurting my ribs, “you made me want to live, Cassian. Thank you.”

I leaned my forehead against his and we let the moment settle around us. This was no one fault but Tomas’s and we both knew that. It was hard to push the blame off, but it was the truth.

"I have this," he whispered softly as the machines beeped in the background. I looked and he held out my ring. I smiled as he slipped it back onto my bruised and badly cut finger.

"Thanks," I kept ahold of his hand, "I um. What I said. What you said."

I stumbled, but Cassian smiled, "I meant it. Danger or no danger, I love you. I know it's only been a week, if you're still a little... scared of us, of this I understand. But just know I mean it."

I shook my head, "not scared. No just. Aren't we going too fast?"

Cassian leaned in and kissed me softly, his lips like feathers against mine. He kissed me as if I was a piece of spun glass he was afraid he was going to break. When he pulled back his thumb brushed over my bottom lip. I would never tire of that move, it made me come alive. It made me feel as if I was the most precious thing in his world.

"I think we're going at just the right speed."

My cheeks burned as he held my gaze. But I didn't get a chance to respond more than just a nod because the door opened. And Feyre hobbled in on crutches, followed by Rhysand.

"Oh Nesta," she smiled sweetly despite her bruises still being fresh, "couldn't let me have all the attention could you? You had to get kidnapped and practically scare the shit out of your new boyfriend."

I rolled my eyes, "Fey. I'm sorry," I didn't think I just started to apologize, "for what I said before you got hurt. For being such a shitty sister."

She waved her hand and sat in the open chair beside Cassian. She leaned her crutches against the wall and leaned in, grabbing my hand. The one still holding Cassian's.

"It doesn't matter, okay? I know you were upset. I know you didn't want to admit it, that you wanted Cassian to come save you. I would let you hurt me a million times over if this is the Nesta I've got now. The Nesta who's fallen in love."

My sister glance at Cassian and this time he blushed. I let out a slow breath and nodded, Cassian's eyes catching mine. The moment settled and I winced at pain shot up my back.

"They gave you stitches," he answered before I could ask, "if he had stabbed you any further to the right he would've gotten an artery. You would be dead, Nes."

"Don't call me that," I whispered, his evil voice in my ear, "call me anything but Nes, please Cass."

Cassian leaned in, "I'm sorry sweetheart."

He kissed me softly. When he pulled back I let out a breath, "so what happened to Tomas?”

Cassian looked at Feyre and my sister sighed, “we aren’t exactly sure. He wasn’t at the cabin and the police are looking for him. But he went after you, Cassian found you in the woods. He must have ran when he heard the sirens.”

Cassian squeezed my hand gently and I felt a wave of disappointment hit me. I winced as I struggled to sit up at little more. Cassian helped me, “so he’s still out there.”

“He won’t touch you,” Cassian’s deep voice was full of anger and hate, “I promise you. This time I will be with you.”

I forced a smile as he leaned forward and pressed his lips to mine. Rhys and Feyre smiled as I pulled away and looked at my sister, “I um. I need to tell you something Fey. It’s about this, why Tomas was obsessed with hurting us.”

“Because of that thing that happened years ago,” she blinked, I could tell she didn’t want me to mention whatever he knew about her.

I shook my head, “that was the beginning, the reason why he wanted you to invite him to the cabin. But I um. Cassian and I weren’t always dating. When I told you I had a boyfriend all those months ago I lied. Because I wanted you to stop worrying, I wanted you to think I was doing better than I really was. So I made him up. I didn’t plan on seeing you and Elain so soon, I didn’t worry about you wanting to meet him.”

“Nesta.”

I shook my head and leaned into Cassian, who was standing closer to the bed than he had been before. I wanted him to climb in beside me, but I knew that wasn’t possible. This bed was tiny, and there was an IV sitting right where he would fit.

“I um. Rita introduced me to her friend, someone who wouldn’t have a problem pretending. So I offered Cassian a free weekend at the lake and I paid him to be my boyfriend. So you and Elain and Rhys wouldn’t worry. So you guys would stop asking me about my boyfriend. I lied to you guys, again. Because I was too afraid to tell you the truth.”

The room was silent as I sat there with my eyes closed. I fought off tears, more from embarrassment than anything else. But I had finally done it, I told my sister the truth. I opened my eyes and looked at her. My cheeks were bright red, because there were tears in her eyes.

“He found out. Tomas had put cameras in the rooms of that cabin. He heard everything, Cassian and I talking about the arrangement, Cass sleeping on the floor that first night. He heard it all and blackmailed me again.”

Feyre leaned into Rhysand, he was her strength the way Cassian had started to become mine. I could see how upset she was, but before I could go on, Cassian interrupted me. He cleared his throat and sat down on the edge of the bed.

“That was the beginning. Nesta said she would pay me so I went along with it. But what Nesta didn’t realize is the moment she met me in that diner, when she offered me a chance to be her fake boyfriend, I already wanted to take her on a real date. I fell for Nesta that day and I tried the entire weekend to break through her walls. Your sister is hellfire made flesh, but she made me feel again. She made me believe that there is someone out there for everyone. By the end of the weekend, before Tomas stuck Mor on me, we were actually together. It wasn’t a lie anymore.”

Feyre smiled at Cassian as I leaned into him. He put his arm around my shoulders and then my sister took in a deep breath, “I saw the way he looked at you, Nesta. And I saw the way you looked at him. You two care about each other, even if you didn’t realize it that first day. I’m not mad,” her voice was soft as she touched the back of my hand, “I just wish you didn’t feel the need to lie to us. To make up a boyfriend so we stop asking.”

I forced a smile, “in case you didn’t realize it Feyre, you have the perfect life. You’ve had Rhys for as long as I can remember. He worships the ground you walk on and I’ve never had that. I’ve had a string of terrible boyfriends, Tomas at the very top. I’ve hurt you and Elain time and time again. When you asked me to come to the cabin I wanted to be the sister who brought someone with her. For once I wanted to be the girl you are.”

Feyre stood up, Rhys’s hands on her hips, and grabbed me in a tight hug. I winced, the bruises weren’t going to be easy to get through, but I hugged her back. She took in a deep breath and pushed my hair behind my ear. Cassian didn’t let me go, he watched us have our moment.

“You’ve always been my big sister. You’ll always be my big sister. I love you Nesta, whether you’re alone or you’re with someone. I’ve always looked up to you.”

I smiled as she pulled away. She all but fell back in her seat, the cast on her leg was heavy I’m sure, “although if I can make a request, I really hope you plan on keeping Cassian around. He’s good for you.”

I nodded, my eyes finding his, “I plan on keeping him around for a long time.”

Before he could lean in and kiss me a nurse opened the door, “I’m sorry guys, but visiting hours are almost over. So say you’re goodbyes, Nesta needs to get some rest.”

I went stiff in Cassian’s arm. I didn’t want to be alone, not when Tomas was still out there. He would know what hospital they brought me to. He would know I was okay and that he hadn’t gone through with his plan. I took in a breath and Cassian held me closer. I didn’t want them to leave, but I knew they had to.

“Get some sleep Nesta, I’ll come back tomorrow,” Feyre stood up and Rhys helped her with her crutches.

I wanted to tell her not to worry about me, to worry about herself. But I couldn’t. I was too caught up in the realization that I would be alone soon. I didn’t want to be alone, not with everything that had happened. Cassian walked the two of them to the door and then came back to my side.

“They’ll have to drag me out when the hours are over,” he whispered softly as he picked my hand back up, “tell me how you’re really feeling.”

“Tired,” I whispered, looking down at our hands, “scared. I don’t. I can’t stop remembering it all Cassian. What he did, what he wanted to do.”

I looked up at him through my tears. I was never one to cry, I hated feeling weak, but with what Tomas did I could feel myself breaking. I took in a deep breath and Cassian pulled me into his chest. He hugged me, trying to put my broken pieces back together.

Somehow Cassian convinced the nurses to let him stay over night. He told them that the police wanted someone to watch over me because Tomas hadn’t been found yet. He told them that he was the one to do it. I wasn’t going to complain, for the first time I admitted that I needed someone else. For the first time I wasn’t afraid to let him care for me.

I woke up sweating, my hands shaking. The dark room disoriented me. I let out a whine as I realized I was safe, it had been a dream that scared me. I was still shaking, tears sliding down my cheeks as I fell back against the pillow, blinking away his evil face. I was breathing hard, my body still thought it was caught up in the nightmare I had survived.

I tried to recompose myself. But then I felt a big warm hand find my hip. I felt myself relax as his breath hit my ear, “Nesta, hey,” Cassian’s voice floated towards me. It was smooth and sweet, the perfect remedy for my nightmare, “it’s okay. You’re safe.”

I whimpered, wrapping my arms around his big muscle, “Cassian.”

“I’m here, sweetheart,” he climbed into the bed beside me. I moved, wincing as he pulled me closer. But I would take this pain over the fear that had hit me when I woke up. I would take the tiny bed with him beside me than sleeping alone with the nightmares that were following me.

“I keep seeing his face,” I whispered as I settled in his arms, my head on his chest. His arms were warm, his breath hit the top of my head, “I keep hearing his laugh,” I shivered as I closed my eyes and saw him yet again, “he won. He finally won, Cass.”

Cassian kissed the top of my head, “no he didn’t,” he ran his fingers up and down my arm, “because you are strong and brave. You fought him and you’ve got me. I’ll help keep the demons away. I promise, Nesta.”

I sighed slowly, “I love you. I meant it when I told you that earlier. I love you Cassian Moten. I think I fell in love with you the moment you came into my life. You’ve had my heart ever since that weekend at the lake. Please don’t break it.”

He smiled, brushing hair out of my face, “I promise if you promise,” he whispered afraid to break out spell, “and I love you too.”

I looked up at him, his brown eyes smoldering in the light from the moon. I took in a deep breath and smiled as he leaned down and kissed me gently, keeping his arms around me. I took in a breath as I pulled away and then I laid my head back down on his chest.

“Tell me a story,” I whispered, still afraid to close my eyes and fall asleep.

His laugh vibrated through his chest. He rubbed circles along my forearm as he settled.

“I’m nowhere near the storyteller you are,” he sighed, “but I’ll try. For you.”

I smiled despite my pain. I knew Cassian would do whatever he had to do to keep the demons and Tomas’s ghosts away. He was a good man. And somehow he was mine. Somehow he had found his way past the walls, past the armor I had built to keep him out. And I had never been happier to have a man fight for me. To know that he cared, to know that he would always care.

“Once upon a time there lived a squirrel…” I giggled into his chest, “what? I can’t give a cute little woodland creature an epic adventure?”

I looked up at him through my lashes, “I didn’t say that. Keep going, sweetheart.”

Cassian gave me that crooked smile he seemed to save for me. He tapped my nose and continued on with his story of the squirrel prince.

Cassian kept his voice low and steady, in rhythm with his fingers that were running against my skin. As he spoke I felt myself getting tired once more. My nightmare was gone. I was safe here in his arms. I closed my eyes once his story was over and he started to hum a soft melody. I clung to his shirt as I drifted back to sleep, afraid I would wake up and find him gone if I didn’t hold on.

Cassian’s arms were enough, he was enough to keep me safe. To chase away the bad dreams. To keep the demons away. Cassian was my saving grace, it took me almost losing him to finally figure that out.

Much may be Forgotten ‘ere the Tide Runs Dry

Ladies and gentlemen, the final chapter. I feel obligated as a writer to thank those of you who have read my work, shared my work, appreciated my work. It’s been fun to write, and I hope it’s been fun to read. Also, sorry/not sorry that this chapter is twice as long as the others; I’ve never been very good at wrapping up, but I like to think I’ve done a pretty decent job. As always, you can find parts one,two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine and ten on my blog using these hyperlinks or by clicking on the “Original Writing” tab at the top of the page.

Sisters Veronica and Kathrine are in England searching for castles while Ver writes her master’s thesis. They’ve stumbled into the undocumented ruins of a castle dungeon. Hopelessly lost, they begin to realise that not only are they trapped, but they may not be alone. As they fight toward escape, they encounter one final challenge to overcome before they have a chance of seeing the sun again, and discover that Mother Nature is no idle force.

I was beyond curses at this point. I can’t even begin to describe the despair and panic that flooded through me. By this point, the walkways on either side had narrowed to mere inches, and we were walking in the canal itself, a good five feet below the ground level. If it flooded right now, there was nowhere for us to go.

I grabbed her arm. “We have to move faster." But we couldn't. It was all the two of us could do to keep on our feet. We pressed on, hobbling as quickly as we could. The water continued to rise, covering our knees and reaching our waists with alarming speed. Our waterlogged jeans and sneakers slowed us down even more. We had left our backpacks behind hours ago.

Splash. Ver tripping and was flung headlong into the water. She came up gasping, and I realised it was almost up to her shoulders. I was taller than her; I might be able to keep my head up, but it would cover her completely.

"Your shoes," she said, urgently. "Kick off your shoes. They'll only drag you down when you try to swim." A sudden wave slapped her in the face, leaving her with a mouthful of seawater.

We lived for a long time on the shores of Lake Superior. We used to go boating, fishing, and swimming. Until my cousin Lexi drowned. She was swimming at night on a dare, and a current just dragged her under. I was eight years old at the time, and I was terrified. I swore I'd never get that close to the water again. And so, despite living half my life next to the biggest lake in the country, I never learned to swim.

The water was over my head now. I could feel the current dragging at my shirt and the legs of my jeans. It was disorienting. Something slammed into my knees, and I lost my balance. The last thing I remember is catching a glimpse of light somewhere far ahead.

Air.

For about five seconds, everything was utterly black. Then, with a gasp, I felt air rushing into my lungs. Right that second, I swore off every substance I’d ever taken in my life. I’d have even given up coffee for one more breath of oxygen. I felt gravel digging into my cheek, water lapping gently around my waist. Slowly, painfully, I opened my eyes.

Everything was blurry. I could make out dried stalks of grass and weeds, and vaguely beyond it, water. As my mind began to clear, I could hear the water, too, crashing in the distance. I could also hear…sirens? Somewhere behind me, people were shouting in a faint jumble of voices and words. Someone touched my back.

“She’s awake!” An unfamiliar face peered down at me. “Can you hear me, miss?”

I tried to speak, choked, tried again. I heard him holler for water. A moment later, a plastic cup was pressed against my lips.

“Slowly,” he said, tipping the glass so I could drink. Someone else helped prop me up so I didn’t choke on it. I hadn’t had fresh water for days. “Now. Can you tell me your name? How did you get here?”

“Kathrine,” I rasped. “Kathrine Cutter. We were—my sister.” Panic flooded my brain. “My sister. Where is she—you have to-” I choked on the water I was trying to drink and nearly threw up.

“Already on the way to the hospital,” he answered. “We found her a kilometer further down the coast.”

Strong hands lifted me off the ground, carrying me away from the shore. “We’re going to get you to the hospital,” a woman assured me. “You’re going to be just fine.”

“Wait.” I grabbed her hand. “Wait; you can’t take me just yet. I need to speak to the police.”

“It’s going to be alright.” She said again. “You’ve been through a lot. Just rest for now, let us do our jobs.”

“No!” There was enough force in my voice to make her pause. “I need to speak with an officer. There’s a-there’s a dungeon. A labyrinth. Somewhere below where we’re standing.” Out of the corner of my eye, I saw a figure move closer, and made out the shape of a badge. Police, maybe fire department. I turned toward them. “There are…” I started coughing again. The woman at my shoulder cleared her throat impatiently. Slowly, deliberately, I turned to the officer and tried again. “There are smugglers using the tunnels of a medieval dungeon to run drugs out of Liverpool and into Ireland. Heroin, cases of it. We stumbled on two of them by accident and they trapped us in the dungeons. It’s hard to navigate, but I can get you to them. I know where to go. I remember.”

The officer knelt next to me. “Are you sure?” I nodded carefully. “Can you describe it, or them?”

“I can draw you a map. You’ll have to wait for the tide to get in, but I can draw it.”

“Tides’ already running out,” he answered. He turned to someone behind him. “Pencil and paper! Quickly!”

The nurse tried to argue, he insisted they needed it, I shut them both down with a quiet, “If I don’t do this now, I might never remember”. Pencil and paper were retrieved as requested.

And I stopped to think. I knew where we were when we’d fallen in, at least roughly. I pressed my memory for clues, directions, distances. So much of it was just a jumble of turns in the ever-curving tunnels. I started to draw, acutely aware of the number of eyes watching me as I did so. I drew the entrance point, noted that it flooded with the tide. I drew the big room with the EMP device. And then it was like the pencil just took over. Lines appeared on paper, tunnels I barely remembered walking through as my brain assembled the pieces one step at a time. Where I’d fallen in. An estimated distance from there to the oubliette room. I told them about the sobbing mine worker. I don’t know how long I sat, shivering on the road, sketching lines on a now-damp piece of paper.

“That’s it.” I shoved the paper at him. “That’s what I remember. I know it isn’t perfect, but it…it’ll get you there.”

The officer’s eyes widened as he took the proffered paper. “How could you possibly…you were dehydrated and sick, how did you remember…look at this!” he exclaimed to the officer behind him. “Compass points, distances. It’s all in feet and yards but we can…” Whatever else he said to say was lost in the whirl of officers and medical personnel. I was only vaguely aware of being rushed to an ambulance, having an IV inserted in my arm.

It was three days before they let me see my sister. I was kept in intensive care, being treated for hypothermia, dehydration, four broken ribs, and a hairline crack in my skull from being slammed about in the canal. When she finally came to visit me, on crutches and wincing, I was well enough to lean forward and give her a weak, but still heartfelt, hug.

“How’re you feeling?” she asked, maneuvering herself gingerly onto the bed. She’d done some nasty damage to one of her ankles in addition to being treated for trauma. But she was out and about, which was more than I could say.

“I’ve been worse,” I answered. She grinned faintly, then looked down at her hands, uncharacteristically shy.

“I’m sorry I dragged you into all of this,” she burst out. “The dungeon, the travelling, exploring the tunnels…all of that was my fault. And I’m sorry.”

I put a hand on her shoulder. “If you really want to apologise, there’s one thing you can do for me.”

She raised an eyebrow. “What’s that?”

“Get your Master’s degree in something else. Contact the school, tell them you’re switching from ‘dark spots of the dark ages’ to biology. Or theatre. Or American lit. Anything that doesn’t require you to travel.”

The corners of her mouth twitched. “It’s Medieval History and Lore, Kat,” she said wryly. “But you may have a point—when we get back, I am calling in a very serious meeting with my academic advisor.”

“No more crazy road trips?”

“No more crazy road trips,” she confirmed. She reached out and squeezed my arm. “Though I did do some digging after I booked flights home: did you know they’re working on a new excavation in Egypt? There’s a hidden chamber in King Tut’s tomb that they say might be the burial place of Queen Nefertiti.”

Her face was unreadable, her voice totally deadpan. I gave her a look. “You’re out of your mind.”

She burst out laughing. “Maybe. I mostly just wanted to see what you would do. Although I am serious—archaeologist do think that judging from thermal imaging, there are at least two different tunnels that no one knew about before. For a long time they’ve been speculating on why his tomb is so much smaller, but if there are new tunnels then that means he…”

I let her talk. Ver is never happy unless she has something to obsess about. I was more interested in the first fact she’d dropped: she’d booked flights. We were going home.

As we boarded the airplane a week later, still battered and sore, but ready to go home, I felt a slight shiver run down my spine. We’d had such a hard time explaining to mom what had happened. I certainly couldn’t begin to think of what I was going to tell my friends. I’d spoken with Scotland Yard again, and with an archaeologist who wanted me to help them map out the tunnels more thoroughly, maybe even fly me back for some serious intern work. They, too, were waiting for a reply. But as we taxied down the runway and took to the wide blue sky, I was struck with the thought that maybe I didn’t have to tell anyone anything. No tales of adventure. No tunnel maps, no international visits. Maybe some things truly are better left alone. Deep below the surface, cut off by the tide, maybe some things are meant to be forgotten.
