Paige is the first and ONLY freshman to win player of the year in the NCAA. Sue didn’t do that shit. DT didn’t do that shit. Candace didn’t do that shit. Stewie didn’t do that shit, and CC sure as shit didn’t.

I’m not saying Paige is going to come into the W and have a rookie season like Candace, but I think people have forgotten just how special Paige really is.

She’s also spent the last 4 years (will be 5 by the draft) in UConn’s system which is *notorious* for getting players WNBA ready, ffs we have 16 alum’s currently on rosters, and that’s not even accounting for Gabby, Bria and Evina who are free agents and will likely be back in the league next year.

If anyone’s gonna be ready for the W and all that comes with it, it’s Paige Bueckers.

Hockey Player AU! Captain John Price Headcanons

Center. Long time captain (obv.), long suffering captain. 1000+ games. Someone get this man a cup already ffs. Defensive offenseman; has like three Selke trophies.

Not a big goal scorer, under reactive cellies, does the stand and point at whoever was the assist. But he does tally a few good assists per year and his cellies for his boys are intense. A little slower these days but will not back down from a crushing hit or dropping the gloves when he makes the occasion call for it. MEAN slapshot.

Leads by example... which... can lead to some crowded penalty boxes- you do NOT cheap shot these guys. They can and will drop the gloves. Price holds his team to the same standards and isn't afraid to enforce it internally. He'll drag Soap out of a pile as many times as he needs to. They play hard and physical, but clean.

Similarly, he wants to hold the league to high standards as well. If he feels there's been too many bad calls by the refs he's ready to cut a check to the league for scalding criticism post game.

Loves his boys so much. Always yelling encouragement on the bench. Would and has run through a wall for them. Physically affectionate. Known to give a little kiss on the cheek during cellies or on the bench 🥹 Gif sets of those are very popular. We love to see it.

He's a hockey veteran though and though, made some deep playoff runs, knows his shit, knows they can win a cup.

His team may be down but they are never out. Do not turn off the game, do not leave the stadium early, because you will regret it. Price will lead the team though the most nail biting comeback you've ever seen. He's fully taken the clipboard from the assistant coach to draw up plays before and it WORKS. Down three with three minutes left? One goal per minute, easy (this is, in fact, not easy).

Gaz is set to be his predecessor for captain. Price could not be more happy about it; he took Gaz under his wing the second he was drafted. Even though their play styles aren't the same, Gaz learns a lot from Price's leadership skills.

The kids think he's trendy with the 'bucket hat'... has to explain it's not.

Not a media favorite. He doesn't use the stock hockey responses and is a little too real. Has accidentally sworn multiple times live on air :( Used to avoid interviews and pressers when he was younger, but once he took on leadership roles he had to make peace with it. He gets asked the 'why are you so pissy' comment that Drai did a couple years ago. Reporter got a death glare for that.

Yet a fan favorite. We can't help it he's so handsome!! Competency is hot!! He's loyal and passionate! What's not to love about him!

Locker room menace- walks around naked and does not give a fuck. Much to the chagrin of the media. (Pls one shot of his ass just one please we're begging you)

Hockey hair status: yes with his facial hair. Keeps the chops shorter during the regular season, but lets it all grow for the playoffs

Roster pic status: he's giving that one face. His promo videos are also 😵‍💫

Mic'd up: he'll do it and knows people like his voice (for some reason?) but he doesn't prefer it

WAG status: has been with the same women for years and years. She enjoys games with the other girls, but doesn't party as much as she used to. His family was SO cute at his 1000th game ceremony 🥹 

His number WILL be retired one day and I WILL cry at the ceremony.

After retirement will stick around to coach, probably after taking a few years off to be with his family.

I also want to add as a football lover: I love that they are exploring how a superstar footballer can disrupt a safe and growing space for a team.

The team is becoming lazy. The first episode of Ted Lasso, the team's strategy was the same as the one they are playing with Zava. They had Jamie in the front and all other footballers were meant to pass to Jamie to score.

Ted changed that. Ted got Jamie to make the extra pass ffs. And in the start of the season they were planning to play with the 4-4-2, the 2 being Jamie and Dani as their striker but now with Zava it became 4-5-1. They dropped Colin from the starting 11 and pulled Jamie and Dani in midfield and only striker is now Zava.

I said it in a previous post. I am worried about Ted this season. He is not doing well! There are major warning signs with him and I worry they will get worse. He is not getting the support he needs from his therapist, either. Also, because the team is doing well, Ted is involving with the players less and less and add that with his personal issues, that seems to be getting worse.

I think we will get clapped at the end of this season even if Richmond wins the league, it won't be a victory.

wow. that's a whole year of stuff... and that's defos a lot! i think i'm really happy with what i drew this year.... i don't know what was in my water the last few years but my art highlights felt really.... miserable? for some reason. i mean, yeah, i didn't do a lot of what i had planned (GOE ANIMATIC IM SORRY) but i can see that i've done just as much with my hands anyways, so like, who cares? plus, i always have next year... that's coming in 3 hours, oh god- so, maybe i won't be too hard on myself for not fulfilling my goals... like, i kinda glossed over it, but i did sell my designs for money, and that's like, really impressive! so many people around me buy and sell their art stuff already, so i guess i didn't really register it as something to be proud of... but doing that shit (making, and marketing) is hard!! so like, it's a wow moment for me!

The problem is that we are still shaping our team, we have incredible players but we still lack of this defensive-ofensive line that we were relying on one player that is currently injured. I think next season we can win laliga but this season feels a little far to me (who knows tho)

I think that while we have a talented group, we still lack quality going forward. We got away with it last season because our defense stood tall and allowed us to win 1-0 many games but now our defense is very shaky and we can't get away with being so wasteful anymore. We all knew Gavi's injury was going to hit us like a truck, he's that glue between our attack and defense and he also does all the defending in our midfield. He was our best player up until his injury. I also know now why they're obsessed with his passion because literally none of them gives even half his energy on the pitch. Seeing our players just stand and watch as our opponent twists and turns freely in our damn box made me want to scream. Like they literally just watched him go at it while I screamed my lungs out for literally just anyone to do something FFS 😭 and don't even get me started on our manmarking. Just terrible. Do I think we can still win the league? Yes but my positivity is diminishing by the minute. 7 points is a big gap but it's not impossible. We'll need a lot of luck tho

That's what they mean. It's interesting though that Rosengård for many years has had the biggest budget out of all the clubs and that they didn't win the league in modern time in 2016 (Linköping), 2017 (Linköping), 2018 (Piteå) and 2020 (Gothenburg). But they won in 2019, 2021 and 2022. Rosengård has a men's team currently in division 1 iirc.

Ticket prices aren't the clubs main source of income even on the men's side in Sweden. It's the tv-deals and sponsoring that bring in the big money when not counting selling players. There's also other ways of monetary support via Riksidrottsförbundet and I think elite clubs are eligible to apply for föreningsbidrag but I can be wrong about that.

Swedish clubs can't have majority owners. We have the 51% rule here which means the members own 51% of the club and have a bigger say than a 49% owner has despite the millions he, she or a company can flash with. Bronsman never owned Kopparbergs/Göteborg. He was just the main sponsor via his brewery and the chairman. With that said Gothenburg wasn't a shining example of a good internal club organisation with member democracy. It was very simplistic and ran like a grassroot amateur club.

Louis left Tulum and went to Mexico City, and we got airport pics from both ends: the gathered fans were told by his bodyguard that they should keep their distance but that yes, pictures would be allowed. Thank you Louis! We got to see him a little for the first time in so long, in videos of him walking by (and getting ready to walk by) and blurry pics of him with his guitar, and Oli and Charlie- I’m excited to someday see the footage of whatever they’re working on. But for now, finally some proper pictures of the long long hair, or at least the below the hat part, all flippy and like...LONG! It’s on his SHOULDERS! Early pics had some interesting shadows around an elbow, prompting a flurry of NeW TaTtoO?? excitement, but when more pics were posted we could see that no, his elbow remains the same, false alarm. Once that tattoo kerfuffle died down the interest refocused on his shirt, which featured- a whole damn pile of skulls!

Louis went through a long phase of wearing skull shirts a while back, and the fact that it was during a period of a lot of very pointed t-shirt messages (and that he kept doing it more than ever despite knowing what we were reading into it) seemed to reinforce the theory that he did in fact mean things by it, and seeing him say yes to fan photos while wearing this shirt for the occasion… well! Yesterday’s shirt was for the band Obituary- is the band name a nod at the fact that Syco, generally considered to be the main target of previous skull shirts, is now dead and gone (rest in pieces assholes:))? Liam has a big interview in Glamour to promote his BAFTAS performance! If *I* were doing the piece I would have really gone hard on the Two Liams angle of the performance (in which Liam will be accompanied by a hologram of himself) but alas they are boring and only interviewed one of him- maybe the part where he says “you're on stage, you're a certain type of person, and at home you're a certain type of person” sort of counts? The “that's always something I've really struggled with” makes it not so fun though, but that’s a Liam interview for ya; worrisome and makes you want to hug him a lot. “I didn't actually realize this for a long time, but I often give a little bit too much away,“ he says, and today is no exception. We catch up on the time since last we heard from him, when he told us he was going to take some well-earned time off and try to focus on writing new music; he continues to have difficulty with downtime unfortunately. Oh Liam, I do wish it were easier for you to take a break! He says, “I stopped working and I had a full, proper month off [and that was] really hard. And it was all a bit dark for me for a little bit... not being able to go anywhere, not being able to do anything. It really, really hit home. And I just found myself sat in the same place day in, day out. And I was like, okay, I really do not know what to do with myself” and “for me, learning to relax has always been quite a hard thing to do because I feel like if I'm not moving forward, then I must be going backwards.” He goes on to say “so, in a way it's kind of a blessing in disguise, as this has all kind of taught me to relax a little bit more. There’s nothing there that he hasn’t talked about before (he’s publicly addressed both his struggles with alcohol dependency and has talked a lot about his disordered eating though he hasn’t himself named it that) but after publication Glamour edited the piece to omit the part about his drinking-- I’m guessing the augmented reality app people didn’t feel it fit their ideal image (sigh). What that leaves is him saying how nice it was to be able to eat what he wanted during lockdown but that having the boundaries and rules in place of restricting his food again has made him feel better about himself, which if you ask me is still plenty distressing. Oh Liam :( <I’ve never wanted to hug someone so bad/ Spongebob meme> On a slightly more cheerful note, he tells us he feels supported and heard by a manager that he’s close to, and by Louis, and that those relationships are good for him (the interviewer does ask about Bear, but financee Maya is not mentioned even once in this article). The piece ends with a startling response to a comment about his upcoming performance: “I'll see you wherever you want me in your house, I guess.”

Niall posted about his Masters (golf) fantasy league and he was seen out and about! He was photographed in London driving a car the size of a house and on the street carrying one of his dozens of different reusable water bottles, with his hair floppy and down- is it a new haircut or just unstyled??- and shorts and little roundish shades. Hello Neil! There was a rumored sighting of Harry in London as well but no pics and like we know he’s there anyway so… shrug. And iHeart award nominations are up, and they’re pitting louies against harries, ouch. Will it be nasty (well when isn’t it even without this voted category, sigh), or will the louies simply steamroller everyone as per usual? Only time will tell, but if so harries can console themselves with their likely wins in the Male Artist of the Year, Best Lyrics (Adore You), and Song of the Year (WS) categories.

Damian

Compassionate - if you don't get that damian cares about other people you can't write him, do not pass go do not collect 200 dollars. i don't care about arguing whether it comes easy for him or not because that doesn't really matter to me as much as his actions. we see him being willing to extend a hand out to kids who are in the same or a similar situation to the one he was in (demon's fist, mara, suren, maya). Also whenever he gives gifts, he like thinks of something SUPER meaningful for the person and then spends a bunch of effort hunting it down. He must make everyone else look like chumps at birthday parties :P

Competent - yes he's 10-14 years old in his canon main timeline appearances. that doesn't make him any less competent. don't forget he was trained since birth both to fight and in many other fields little dude canonically has a phd level education in economics*. "but it's unrealistic" maybe you are in the wrong genre if you are looking for incredible realism.

also even outside his skills he is still good at adapting and thinking on his feet, it's not like he only ever fights. he keeps himself alive against deathstroke via all the traps in the tomb that he memorized where were, he KOs jim gordon's boring bat suit by leading him into a trap and frying him with electricity, he freaks zsasz out by mimicking his fighting style back at him.... if he has a superior opponent (ok idk if jim is really a superior opponent i can’t remember how tough he was portrayed as in his boring batman run but whatever lol) he still tries to find ways to win that aren't just "punch it"

Confident - what makes Damian so fun to read is that he either acts like he’s the shit or knows he’s the shit (Depending on the point in his character development). there is ZERO fanboying on his part (yes he has people he respects) and he insists on being part of the room he is impossible to ignore. Even if he desperately craves someone's approval, he will never act like he needs it. He does definitely have some insecurities, especially when he just joins batfam, but I feel like overall especially post character development he’s pretty confident and sure of himself (and when he is not, he will still act like he is :P)

Reserved - Damian is extremely unlikely to just spill his feelings out to anyone he just meets. It takes him a VERY long time to open up to people.

still just a kid ffs - this doesn’t mean he wants to be treated like a kid, and he’s obviously not like a “regular” kid who wasn’t raised by assassins, but he's going to interact with things from the lens that a kid does. like I know this definitely wasn't intended by the author, but I think it's kind of interesting how Damian just seems a bit more... irritable and disagreeable when he just joins batfam than when he was working with the League of Shadows and like... his entire world changed! he moved from being the heir to ra's al ghul and presumably commanding around grown men assassins to having to follow dick's orders, live in a completely different environment, and be told the way that he was raised was wrong. any kid I think would be irritable and have a hard time juggling that new situation

A (very basic) Hockey Advanced Stats Primer

For better formatting (x)

So maybe you’ve seen someone talk about Corsi or Expected Goals on The Athletic or someone keeps bringing up some blue & red chart every time the trade deadline comes around and you don’t know what the hell they’re talking about. Well here’s a primer about the basic advanced stats that are prevalent in the hockey analytics community so the next time one of those articles come up, it won’t be as confusing (hopefully). 

Before we even get started though, +/- is a bullshit stat. We’ve moved past the need for +/-.

TEAM STATS

Corsi is total shot attempts

shots on goal (SOG) + blocked shots + missed shots. 

Corsi For (CF) is all shots taken by your team & Corsi Against (CA) is all shots taken by your opponent.

This was the placeholder stat for puck possession for a little while because of the logic that you can take more shots when you have the puck. 

The stats community has moved away from that, they just use it as plain old shot attempts now.

Fenwick is total unblocked shot attempts 

(SOG + missed shots). 

Fenwick For (FF) & Fenwick Against (FA)

Fenwick is used to take into account the opponent’s defense because it takes out the shots that they’ve blocked.

A player with low FA is usually a good positional defender because they suppress opponent’s shots without having to rely on blocking.

Corsi & Fenwick are usually displayed as percentages (CF% & FF%) and you want to be above 50% which is more than half the shots taken.

Scoring Chances is shot quality (v1)

Each shot is assigned a value depending on where it was taken, the closer you are to the net, the higher the value. A scoring chance is a shot with a value of 2.

There’s actual math involved that takes into account whether it’s a rebound or a rush shot or if it’s been blocked. Here’s a more in-depth look at that. (x)

They’re grouped into High Danger (value of 3 or more), Medium Danger (2), & Low Danger (1 or less).

A team can have an overwhelming advantage on CF% & FF% but still be losing on the Scoring Chances front. 

Usually that means they’ve been taking shots from the point and an average goalie can clean that up easy. 

On the other hand, they can be getting caved in shot attempts-wise but all the shots they do get are from the slot or are breakaways/rebounds which are harder for a goalie to save. Ideally you want quantity & quality

Expected Goals (xG) is shot quality (v2)

Each shot has an xG value and they’re all added up to become the team’s expected goals for a given game

A wrist shot off a rebound in the slot is more likely to lead to a goal than a slapshot from the point and so it’s worth more

xG models are built on historical shot data and take multiple factors like shot location, shot type, angle, game state (even strength, 4v4, etc.) whether a team is in the lead, by how much, etc., and calculates the likelihood of each shot turning into a goal. 

It’s basically powered up Scoring Chances

The word ‘Expected’ is misleading because xG is more of a descriptive stat than a predictive one. It tells you more about how a team is playing than telling you if that team is going to win

It can tell you that they’re playing well enough to score X goals but not whether they’re actually going to score those goals

You can have 3.56 xG and lose in a shutout because you ran into a hot goalie. Hockey’s cruel like that.

This is an incredibly basic overview of this stat and if you want an in-depth look at the more popular xG models in the hockey analytics community, here are some links:

PDO is luck 

Shooting% + Save%

It’s used as a barometer to judge whether a team’s performance is the real deal or if it’s boosted/pulled down by other factors

Are they being carried by a hot goalie? Is the team’s sh% comically low? Can the goalie not even save a beach ball? Is the team shooting at almost 20%?

The league average is 100 and you don’t want to get too far on either side

Some teams ride a hot streak right into the playoffs but most of the time, it regresses to the mean and they come crashing down.

INDIVIDUAL STATS

Each player has their own individual CF%, FF%, & xGF% (the team ones are just the totals of all the players’ stats)

Again, you want your players to have more than 50% in each of these metrics because that means you’re taking more shots.

If a player/a line is getting 40% or lower, your team is getting caved in every time they’re on the ice. That’s not great.

CF%Rel, FF%Rel, xGF%Rel shows the difference between the team’s metrics with the player on & off the ice. You want a positive number on these.

Goals Above Replacement (GAR)

The goals a player contributes compared to an average replacement level player

Like xG, it’s usually run with models that take multiple factors into account to give you a single number that tells you how much one player will contribute to your team

It’s baseball’s WAR but for hockey

Again, this one’s a lot more complicated than what this primer needs (and tbh, I don’t quite understand it either), so here are links to Evolving Hockey’s paper about their GAR model (1)(2)(3)

GOALIE STATS

Sv% & Goals Against Average (GAA) suck as goalie metrics because they don’t take into account the kind of defense that a goalie has in front of them

A goalie can have a .907 sv% but he’s been playing behind three toddlers and several potted plants so that number isn’t really fair to him

That sv% was a random pull but it’s also Jonathan Bernier’s numbers in 46 games behind the Red Wings who are allegedly a hockey team. So tell me, is that number fair to Bernier?

GAA sucks for the same reason

Goals Saved Above Average (GSAA) 

The number of goals saved given the goalie’s sv% & shots faced vs the league average sv% on the same number of shots

It’s better than GAA because it at least gives you a comparison to league average which lends context to a performance

It still doesn’t take into account the defense the goalie has to play behind

Goals Saved Above Expected (GSAx) 

Expected Goals Against (xGA) - Goals Against (GA)

The number of goals that a goalie prevented against the quality of shots they were facing

This is most the prevalent goalie stat that takes the team’s defensive structure into account so it becomes possible to isolate the goaltender’s performance

For example, the Jets were playing at a rate of giving up 160.82 goals against in the regular season but in reality, they only gave up 140. Connor Hellebuyck saved their asses by preventing at least 20 extra goals. They sucked and he bailed them out, he deserves the Vezina.

Some goalies play well even when they’re already behind good defensive structure (Khudobin, Rask); some get helped along by their team’s defense (the Jackets’ goalies); and some flounder while under heavy fire (RIP Bob)

CHARTS

So now that we have a basic overview of the metrics, time to talk about my favorite thing about hockey stats: THE VIZ

ChartingHockey (x)

Sean Tierney’s charts are the best if you just want to see how each team is doing on every metric

During the season, he posts a thread each morning with charts on shot rates (CF/CA), xG rates, PDO, & more. They’re easy to understand because they come in the typical four quadrants and they have helpful labels. (x)

HockeyViz (x)(x)

Micah Blake McCurdy provides HEATMAPS (these are the red & blue ones), game charts (shot location maps, lines, icetime, zone usage, etc,), and so much more 

You can access certain charts for free on the site but there are a lot more that come with a Patreon subscription (and Micah’s a delight)

His heatmaps are usually the ones that get shared around on Twitter so I’ll explain them

The more red an area is, the more shots are being taken there compared to league average. The more blue, the less shots are being taken. 

For the OFFENCE charts, you want the area around the net (the gray box) to be red AF

Conversely, for the DEFENCE charts, you want the area to be blue.

Obviously s02 hasn't even come out yet, so I'm just talking about potential here.
