my other niche riordanverse bird-woman related hc is that all harpies are birds of prey, for obvious reasons. like, i know canonically Ella is supposed to be a parrot. all signs point to parrot. that's the joke with her, that she parrots back stuff she's learned. HOWEVER the joke was horribly executed and i think it is significantly more fun and interesting if Ella is a bearded vulture.
like. a.) looks fun visually, b.) further reminds/emphasizes the fact that she's a harpy specifically than just a bird lady. like yeah no harpies eat people. Ella is carnivorous. She has definitely eaten a demigod before. c.) Also implies that the reason her feathers/hair is red is that she tints them like how actual bearded vultures do, which is just kind of fun.
If you -- not a character optimized for gameplay capability, but you the actual real live person -- had one or more Pokémon, what Pokémon would you have?
RE: Amazon's Lord of the Rings series:
I think this excellent video from Sarah z -- about the way that right-wing backlash against certain media properties makes it nearly impossible to have genuine conversations about them, because you can't talk about them in good faith without inadvertently adding to the right-wing dogpile of people criticizing them for racist sexist reasons -- conveys pretty much everything I should probably say about it ladjflksdfs.
Sarah Z makes a great point that this kind of vicious right-wing backlash often tends to deliberately focus media properties that are mediocre because of other reasons (like boring corporate mandates) and claim they're mediocre because of diversity. Right-wingers intentionally ignore properties that have diversity and are Good, and intentionally ignore the billions of shows/movies that aren't "woke" but are also similarly mediocre.
Because right-wingers don't actually care about the "quality of art" unless they can use that as a weapon to attack the people they hate.
So, given the revelations that came with The Book of Bill, and all the intentional parallels they've drawn between Ford and Bill, and even the way we can kinda infer that Bill either saw something of himself in Ford or at least thought he found someone that could potentially really understand him...
With all that in mind, the insistence of Bill of having Ford being the one that opens the portal even after Ford realizes what Bill really is and what he wants, and rejects him... at that point it might have been easier to try and get anyone else, to possess someone and just break into the lab and open the portal that way, right? The portal was complete, he needed someone to open it, but he didn't need FORD to do it...
But, and I am not the first one to point this out by a longshot, I subscribe to the theory that Bill WANTED FORD to be the one to do it, he wanted Ford, the one person he had arguably a genuine connection with in a trillion years, to make the same mistake he did... he wanted to break Ford like he was broken, by making him the architect of his dimension's destruction.
And then he would truly have someone that would understand him completely.
Someone as damaged as him.
This concept is explored beautifully

Pac: I don't know if you remember, we left Cell on an island with just a bullet and a revolver at his disposal and we fled. So, theoretically, we outsmarted* Cell and gave him what he deserved, understand? So, my headcanon, understand? You know? But the drawing was really cool.
[ *passar a perna – literally to deceive, but the direct translation is like a leg sweep, which is why Chat responds with "What leg?" ]
Pac: [Reading chat] What leg? Yeah, not the right one. Wait– not the right. Exactly. The left. Is it the left? Wait, which leg did I lose? [...] No, wait– the left, because my dominant leg is the right. So I will choose the left. [Reading chat] "You chose?" I like to think I had the power to choose.

Pac talks about Fuga Impossível lore and implies that Cell let him decide which leg he'd lose. 🔪

Pac: Guys, it's not the other way around, in my headcanon– in my headcanon– you have to know how to respect my headcanon. In my headcanon– because, I don't know if you remember, we left Cell on an island with just a bullet and a revolver at his disposal and we fled.
Oh sht... [Long pause] I don't remember, man. Oh, I don't know guys, I don't know. Did I decide? Oh, man. None? I'm kidding–
Pac: Well, if I have to decide? The right? I don't know. Nobody knows, right? But this drawing was really cool, it was really cool. You choose one there and I choose the right one. No, wait– the left, because my dominant leg is the right. So I will choose the left. Because like, I'm thinking like this, look what came into my head: Which leg would go away? Wow, I thought "So, if I'm going to kick a ball, I'm going to shoot it with my right leg. If I didn't have a right leg, I wouldn't be able to shoot the ball properly. So I prefer the left." That was my line of thinking, you know? I don't know. It's a bad example, right? And that's it, right? [Reading chat] "You chose?" Yeah, I like to think I had the power to choose.
law and luffy are just like. what if I saw you at the peak of your miracle working competence, and then the literal next time I saw you it was at your most isolated and broken. and what if that moment of seeing you alone and grieving and terrified was the moment where I decided you were someone worth keeping, someone who I personally cared about and wanted around. how does that not make you wanna lose your fucking mind.
and then the other thing on top of that which always gets me is the way that you can just so clearly see that neither of them has any idea how to fit this relationship into any preexisting context - Luffy calls him part of his crew, but law is the captain of his own crew and would clearly die before giving that up; law calls them allies but it is glaringly obvious that they care about each other in a way that goes beyond that. of course Luffy is generally a lot less bothered about this than law, who routinely wants to put his own head through a wall about it, but it’s just such a fun layer to their dynamic I think.
people being dramatic about "american cheese" (in quotes bc americans didn't make it) is one of my favorite topics because it's funny to see people talk about it like it's a biohazardous waste when it's literally just Cheddar That Has Been Watered Down With Milk, And Then Emulsified
