#why are summaries so hard?

My wordcount for the day is kinda hard to track with the rewrite for the TKB 2nd chance chapter. I got it finished and posted, so I guess that counts as progress at least.

Still working on how to word the summary, and ofc the tagging. Also debating if I want to go through the headache of cross-posting to FFN. If it wasn't an ongoing multichapter I probably would, but I think this one's gonna be an AO3 exclusive (not including the Tumblr early access lol).

Guess who got the first chapter of Rival Firefighters 🚒 beta’d today and is working on a summary and tags so they can post it next week? 😃😃😃. I am so so sooooo excited to start posting! (still have that last chapter to finish but it’s almost done and I really don’t wanna wait anymore to start sharing this story).

Today’s snippet isn’t from Rivals though, but from LA Lonely 🏙️, the other wip taking over my brain atm.

Buck arrives at dispatch for lunch with Maddie ten minutes early. It’s his day off and he’s finished all his errands with time to spare so instead of waiting the last ten minutes in the car, he decides to head up to the break room. He may also be secretly hoping that by coming in a bit earlier, there may still be a danish left in the pastry box dispatch gets delivered every morning.

He spies the pastry box and makes a beeline for it, letting out a small cheer of victory when he opens the lid and spies a couple of donuts and a blueberry danish. He grabs the danish and takes a bite, groaning and wiggling his shoulders in a happy little shimmy as the buttery pastry floods his tastebuds.

Turning around to find a seat and wait for Maddie, Buck immediately freezes because sitting down at one of the tables and looking right at him is Eddie. Hot hook up Eddie. Chris’s dad Eddie. Eddie from the coffee shop. That Eddie. His eyes are shining bright with amusement and he’s biting his bottom lip trying to suppress a smile.

If the ground could open up and swallow him whole, that would be great.

Buck chews the remaining bite of danish thoroughly before swallowing, not wanting to have another choking on bread situation. One of those is enough for one lifetime thank you very much.

“Uh, any chance you can pretend you didn’t see that?”

“Nope, not a chance.” Eddie says, an amused grin finally breaking free and okay it’s really unfair how one smile from him has Buck’s heart fluttering.

Summaries

Writing summaries is my least favorite thing to do for fics (or literally anything else), I can never seem to write one I like.

Anyone have any advice for writing fic summaries?

fucking stupid that i have to somehow summarize joe for art fight. i change his description every year because it's never right and it never will be. you want me to condense 7 years of sheer obsession into a few paragraphs? when the simplest explanations of him can only portray him as Just Some Guy???? you should just get it. you should just be able to get it by looking at him. i shouldn't have to describe him, everyone should just know.

AND ANOTHER THING ☝️ (this is about AO3 tagging/summaries) -- tell me which season/episode you've set your fic in. By the gods people, this is an 11 season show with wildly varied tones and circumstances each year. Tell me which one you're using before I read the fic!

man. whenever i see someone discussing it/talking about liking it i feel myself Wanting to like. respect? extreme horror as a genre. more than i do. and i think my problem boils down to like. some of the places these things go.. you need to be a damn good writer, and you kinda need to make it have a Point or a Reason at least somewhat. you gotta be able to suspend your disbelief. that doesn't go any different for any flavor of horror than any other type of nonfiction writing tbh and in my opinion is generally harder to pull off. what happens does, in context, need to at least kinda sorta make a little bit of sense in some way and not be happening Just Because. and because of the rarity and stigma of extreme horror its less likely to qualify well for either of the above and just ends up attracting people who want to write some Really out there shit and get upset when they get justified critique from readers (usually people who bought their book and Enjoy extreme horror!) and always want to couch it like they're being oppressed for Writing which is a super disingenuous way to put it
