4/5 - Subversion of common fantasy tropes, main character falls into a type i love, minimal weird romance

Spoilers below!

This was a book given to me for Christmas by my aunt, and she usually has good book selections and has given me a number of the lesser known fantasy books that I've read. Her taste is also typically pretty well aligned with what I like to see, so I had high expectations for this.

I really liked that this book subverts the whole magical chosen one must save the world. To be clear, Kaylin, the MC, is chosen and does have magic powers, but the whole bit is that she is the threat to the world. Having sacrifices that are designed to render her a puppet for this world-ending power, meaning the cast of characters isn't (only) trying to save her but the entire world, really liven up people's motivations. Personally, I love when characters do bad things and have to atone for them, or bad things for the right reasons or for selfish reasons. It makes them feel more grounded. All of these characters are subject to this.

Kaylin herself had this tendency to go into a blind berserk rage when in the grips of her power sometimes and I love that type of female main character. She's usually kind and caring and focused on the welfare of others, and in the midst of her power, she's not only arrogant and cruel, but drunk off her own power and rage. I love complicated characters.

Where this book loses a point is Kaylin working for the detective force/cops, though admittedly the structure was so unclear to me that that almost didn't matter. Another is the writing. It was a good book and the characters were well formed but, sentence to sentence, sometimes I was left wanting an editor.

I also think the way they showed her markings on the cover is not only ugly but also wrong.

Ever since you were consciously aware that you were the only girl in your respective family, one thing was clear: you wanted a brother.

However, you never wanted a younger brother, you know, the ones with sticky fingers, obnoxiously loud or just completely insufferable. You wanted an older brother - the kind that is unconditionally protective, teasing and a little bit dim-witted, what could you say? You wanted to keep the wits, that's for sure. However, an older brother was certainly a stretch and it's not like the real world could exactly hold up its end of the bargain.

That was, until you were on the boardwalk of Venice Beach and you saw two brightly-coloured blondes in leotards and roller-skates, almost straight out of the 80s. Naturally, your curiosity got the better of you and you followed them around like a lovestruck puppy. You followed them on your skates and a rocket ship, boat and car drive later, you were in Barbieland.

Ken, once he was back on the beach and doing his thing, he saw you, looking a little clueless and, in a way, overwhelmed - he may be just Ken, but he had a heart of gold.

"Hey, are you alright?" He asks, putting his surfboard down.

"Um, I uh, how did I get here?" You ask.

"Well, a bespoke number, roller-skates and a rocket ship later - here you are!" He said, his arms gesturing the grandiose affair. "You seem lost, what's your name?"

"...Y/N." You say. "And you're Ken?"

Ken nods, "Yep."

"Huh, my mom never let me play with Ken dolls, she thought I'd...get ideas..."

Ken tilts his head in slight confusion, but he just rolls with it - from then on, he knew to look after you and, even though an older brother was what you asked for, you didn't expect him.

~~~TIME SKIP TO THE KENDOM~~~ Let's just say you were not too keen on all of the Kens having house parties until midnight, but you endured it and stayed in Ken's Mojo Dojo Casa House for the time being - this patriarchy has spread like wildefire, even Ken, who's been looking after you has done it.

One night, he saunters into your room to check on you.

"Hey," He asks in his most manly voice possible. "You okay, little girl?"

You just nod, a little nervous. "Ken...are you okay?"

He holds his exterior and closes the door, then he gives in. "No...you wanna watch TV?"

"Yeah, ok." You pat an area on your bed for him to sit and put on a calm movie - it was a chick flick - something, at this point he wasn't too proud of.

"Hey, if any of the other Kens find out, you're dead." He jokes.

You open your eye seeing the familiar texture, it seem like this realty look nothing, sound nothing and, taste nothing. Alright this is getting out line.

Standing up, youe eye blur barely have time processing as the blob of darkness with your mind trying to hold off. GAH

And this is your life within Genshin impact world, the game your brother pasture not to played as "wasting too much money and time into". Who can blame you, the game itself was a msterpiece, each arch never a dissapointment.

You gotten used to them, but it place you foudn them never pelase your adventures mind. You didn't have time to touch grass, so wy not visual glass, you know few trick and tip to get around and you think you can take advantage for that fact curse are here. Heh who is tyvert call JUJUTSU BUSTER.

Here you are a successful wanderer and 'shaman' with every encounter you meet promising healing wound, and invisible curses that become evident since youw alk, never been an additional monster to genshin impact but you were glad you're able to bring useful skill to here.

Hey ya’ll… I’m Sam

I’ve seen an increase in binging my fics and figured a reintroduction was necessary. I’m an ADHD writer, so I get really hyper focused on one, then lose interest and start another. I’ll also admit that sometimes I lose the drive to write, but the love left helps! I have at least 6 works in progress at any given time that need to be purged from my drafts soon.

I’m also a psychologist that works with individuals in the criminal justice system. My mind is twisted at times because, well, for my job I have to understand the rationale behind the twisted behaviors of my clients. It’s a fun way to destress myself from all the sad stories I’m told.

I am a stickler for paying homage to the original script and rewatching episodes over and over so I can get my scene right. I share a birthday with Eric Kripke and Baby, April 24th, so that probably explains it.

Do you think Arianne is destined to die? We’ve seen so little of her and she’s a big personality. Or do you think she’s got the pov there to show the wildefire being accidentally set off by dany and aegon and the effects of that on the civilians below?

I personally think Arianne's quite likely to die. I know other people who disagree, though, and I respect their arguments. It's all speculation at this stage.

But yes, I think it's pretty likely that Arianne is the PoV as the wildfire starts to go off - I suspect we'll be booted from JonCon's PoV (and ground-level fighting in King's Landing) once he makes his fateful decision to ignore bells ringing for surrender. And if Arianne's right there to advise Aegon, and doesn't have the advantage of distance on dragonback... I just don't like the potential logistics here. Happy to be wrong on this count!

Effects on the civilian population I think we're more likely to see from Dany's PoV in the aftermath.
