Three Birds On A Wire - Chapter 2 (WIP)

Once again, a little snippet for the next chapter!

"After the assassination of his parents, His Majesty, XGaster the Emperor, was declared the youngest ruler in our Empire's history." In the silence of the palace's classroom, no sound can be heard but the steady scratching of chalk against blackboard and a middle-aged woman's droning lecture. "At the current time, many high-ranking nobles had protested against the decision, claiming that His Majesty was too inexperienced to take over the crown, but our Emperor proved them wrong with his many achievements merely one year later, including the co-invention of the portable magic scrolls, the complete eradication of the Temper of Destruction, and the treaty he drafted with Lady Nim, Highest Order of the Faery Court."

Marchioness Galett's voice is as gentle as gossamer threads, and yet they draw you in just as effortlessly. It is one of the many qualities Frisk admires about her, the way she so easily makes others dance to her silk-woven words, gliding across the political world with the graceful steps of a silent predator. Despite being the female head of a noble household, she has accumulated enough power and influence to make everyone think twice before they dare to become her enemy.

His teacher is absolutely terrifying, and Frisk thinks she is the coolest person he has ever met.

However, while the Prince would normally gladly let himself be led by spider strings, right now, the thoughts inside his head are simply too heavy for the threads to hold onto.

Today is the weekend. The day Chara, Cross, and he agreed to sneak out of the castle.

Still, hesitation is a turbulent ocean inside of him, drowning out any courage or determination in its deathly cold grip. What if something goes wrong? What if they stumble upon yet another group of child traffickers? What if one of the servants notices their disappearance? What if Father finds out and oh All Creator he will be so disappointed this is a terrible idea-

"His Highness?"

The soft chide pulls Frisk from the endless depth of his thoughts. He sucks in a sharp breath, hoping to calm his raging anxiety, and drags up a strained grin from the bottom of his stomach. "Yes, Madame?"

"I've been calling your name for the past ten minutes now." The Marchioness says, and although there is no anger behind her words, Frisk still finds himself shrinking, swallowing a mouthful of shame. "Is there anything troubling you, little Prince?"

A part of him wants to tell her everything, to spill out all the doubt and worry and terror before he can choke on them.

The other part remembers the hope unfurling across his twin brother's face, weak and fragile, yet blooming so beautifully, so vibrantly.

And Frisk will do anything to keep that hope alive.

So, instead of the reassurances he desperately seeks, the Prick plucks the first thing that across his head and lets it tumble out. "Can you tell me more about the Witch of Fables?"

Lady Galett, clever as she is, sees his question as the deflection it is. But because she is his favorite teacher, and he, her favorite student, she does not push him any further, instead electing to hum deliberately.

"I see you've met Ink."

Surprise overtakes his nervousness. "You know them?"

"Of course. As rare as their visits may be, Ink is the Emperor's closest friend. It would be quite idiotic had I not known about them." It's important to watch out for important players on the board, little Prince. One of her earliest lessons echoes. "They've been around for a long, long time. Before you were born. Before I married the Marquess myself."

Frisk's curiosity rears its head. "What do you think about them?"

The Marchioness's many eyes peer right through him, and he unconsciously straightens beneath that considering gaze. "What do you think about them?"

"Well..." He meticulously picks apart his memories, unwilling to disappoint his teacher. "Chara made them to be this fearsome and powerful figure, but from what I've seen, they seem like a... Pardon my language, but they seem like a bumbling idiot."

"Is that all?" She asks, her lips curling into a secretive smile. "Haven't you noticed anything else?"

Frisk scrambles to find a correct answer, but they keep slipping away from his grasp. "Are you suggesting that their foolish act is a pretense?"

"Oh, little Prince, Ink's personality is in no way false." She tuts. "And it's what makes them so horrifying."

He frowns, struggling to see the complete puzzle. But with every piece that slots into place, the picture keeps on shifting, twisting, changing in front of his very eyes, a bucket overflowing with colorful paints until you cannot figure out which is which.

"I'm not sure I understand..."

"Think about it, little Prince, in the short period of time you've known them, have you ever managed to predict their actions? Have you ever truly understood their drive? Their goal? Their weaknesses?"

Realization slowly trickles in, watering a thing full of thorns. "No. No, I haven't."

"Exactly." Lady Galett's expression is as composed as ever, but having known her ever since he was a child, Frisk can see the irritation seeping through her clenched teeth. She has always hated what she cannot control. "Ink is powerful, that, you can deal with. However, they're also unpredictable. They don't follow the same morals and social standards that we follow. They don't have the same greed and pride that we have. What motivates them? What angers them? What is the reason for their interest in us? We have no clue."

She heaves out a sigh, one heavy with the weight of trepidation.

"With someone like that, how can we be so sure that they won't turn their back on us for no reason other than their own entertainment?"

Frisk does not answer. Cannot, really. Silence settles over them, a Damocles's blade ominously swaying back and forth.

Balsamic Vignette for director’s cut

Eeeee I LOVE Balsamic Vignette! Thank you for being my hero ♥♥♥

I adore writing AUs but am deathly allergic to finishing them beyond the one scene I want to write, so that’s where this fic came from. The summary could easily be "5 times Babs didn't complete a wip and the one time she said fuck it and glued them all together"

If I had to rank the AUs by favorite, it would go: Ghost AU, Powers AU, Robin Hood AU, Age Swap AU, Secret Kid AU. This ranking of course changes daily

I joked a little bit, but I do think these stories actually work in this format. I get to focus on what I love instead of the parts I find boring, which is the great part about fanfiction!

I've probably spent the most time daydreaming about the Powers AU because I'm an xmen girly, but I really never thought I'd write it because it's so visual-driven and that makes me mourn not being an artist (I don't know how y'all have the patience to make the pictures in your head into pictures in real life, seems insane actually). The next most built out worldbuilding-wise is the Ghost AU because I do have other scenes in my head but they all get a little x rated, but I've also like figured out how ghosts work in that universe so def most fleshed out (ah ha, flesh, because... he's a ghost).

Secret Kid was a surprise that I actually put down because ch*ldren are not a very Babs-friendly topic, but I DO like the idea of trying to hide something from someone for a very long time and going to greater lengths to pretend everything is okay when it's not. It's that sweet, sweet denial~ .. but in any case, I wrote it once, I got it out of my system, now I never have to think about it again yayyy

And I took a couple of risks with the Robin Hood and Age Swap AUs. I'd honestly love to write more dubcon some time (just to be clear, it's because I think it's hot in a freak way), and the prince and thief dynamic seemed perfect for sticking my toe in the water. I also don't normally focus on the age gap portion of my ship, but in the age swap AU it was veryyy in your face. What's funny about that one was I was thinking hm... people would probably see their relationship as less problematic if Logan was younger and Louise hadn't been as much of a bully to him.... better introduce more problematic elements to balance that out! And thus, she used to be his babysitter. Fiction writing is a wonderful tool for exploring all kinds of stories, so it felt like new territory!

Balsamic Vignette filled a hole in my heart where a bunch of incomplete WIPs used to live, and it makes me so happy to think about, thank you!!!

Oh! Oh! The language of flowers! Or the prince of gryffindor! (or both) 👉👈

Yay! Thank you for the ask! And sorry for being so unreasonable late with this, it's been a busy week.

1. The Language of Flowers is the canon-compliant dual POV of Lily and Petunia’s relationship all the way from pre-Hogwarts to 1981. It’s kind of inspired by that deleted scene from the Deathly Hallows movie where Petunia tells Harry: “You might have lost your mother that night. But I lost a sister.”

Generally the people written as more one-dimensional villains in HP fascinate me because I dislike to see people as inherently evil and nasty like that. So I want to write this fic not to exonerate Petunia, but rather to poke and prod at both the environment and choices that led her to be the way she is.

A big source of inspiration as well is the fact that Lily is never really allowed to be a fully realised character in the books - Harry’s POV, and to some degree I suspect JKR herself, view Lily as this perfectly pure, all-loving, sacrificial mother. Even her name, Lily, is a symbol for purity and innocence. Very Madonna-whore complex vibes. It always gave me the ick because I imagine Lily would have resented this portrayal. Most women I know would resent it, frankly.

I’d like to explore that in this fic - the concept of being give a name with a meaning that fits like someone else’s shoe, of being seen as a role you’re expected to play instead of a person that you are. As a Muggle woman in the 1970s, I’m sure Petunia experienced heaps of that, too. Perhaps her and Lily’s relationship could have healed eventually, if they were only more able to appreciate the way that this same struggle manifests in one another’s life.

As for a snippet, I’ve already posted one here! It’s going to be a short multichapter, and hopefully one of the first fics I get to publish on ao3.

2. The Prince of Gryffindor has been languishing in my WIPs folder for a few good years. It’s a canon divergence fic on what would happen if Snape had been Sorted into Gryffindor instead of Slytherin. In the books, Dumbledore himself comments on Snape’s bravery so it feels like one of my favourite types of canon divergences - one that easily could have happened if someone made a very slightly different choice.

I have the first chapter written, but I struggled to see how I could complete the fic without it escaping into some insane longfic - I only have space for one insane longfic at a time. Fortunately, in the meantime I found a wonderful fic with the same premise - it’s The Gryffindor Sort by small_spyglass. It’s pretty much everything I wanted The Prince of Gryffindor to be, and it’s also funnier than anything I ever could write. I really recommend everyone to check it out!

Elena Vasileva. 19. fae. Lena fled her home at a very young age and in order to survive, she become a hit woman. she is too close to aleksandr, because they met when elena was running away and he offered her a home. lena helps darya to understand the fae world and finds in darya a true friend.

Stefan is a remarkable soldier who lost his family when he was just a kid, so he swore revenge on humans for what they did to him. he gets very close to darya because aleksandr asign him to be her guard and compain her. stefan and lena find them in the duty to show darya the life of the fae court: the court of the dark.

Irina Dashkova. 19. fae. Irina is a tough girl who was raised in the court: a lady from the royalty who wants nothing but fight and prove that she's not the typical damsel in distress. she hesitates and doubts about darya because she doesn't know her well and through her finds true love and a lot of things from the human world.

Hey yall take this. This fic has been absolutely killing me for the last two days and I have no idea why. I just couldn't get the right words down. I swear there's like a good 500 more words that could have been added to this but I tired to trim it down to get the pacing to be better. I didn't allow myself from work on anything else because I knew if I stepped away this fic would fall into WIP hell. I'll probably redo at this point.

Note, this Mc in this story is specifically my Mc. I usually try to keep Mcs typical to fit anyone's Mcs into the prompt/fic, but this fic deals with how my Mc thinks/feels.

Warnings: no smut, but there is a reference to it. Pure angst. Mentions of death, immortality, childhood trauma (Diavolo's fear of abandonment to be more specific), I swear this fic isn't as heavy as this warnings paint it to be.

Pairings: Mc x Diavolo x Lucifer x Barbatos

Word count: 940+ (how the hell is this fic under 1k I felt like every sentence was impossible to write)

All should be well for Mc.

They're cuddling with their some of their favorite demons. They're in Diavolo's castle, in his bed, with the prince himself sprawled on their left side. To the right lays Lucifer, cuddled closer as the two demons boxes them in. Diavolo's arm wrapped around the both of you. Barbatos is resting on Lucifer's rest while the avatar gently threads his finds through his hair.

It's a familiar scene, one they often create after a scene. Usually sex helps Mc get out of their head, but thoughts wouldn't stop swarming around in their head.

Lucifer turns to see their furrowed brow and reaches out to touch it. Leaning into the touch they allow Lucifer to soften it.

"What's the matter?"

"It's silly." They're retort.

"Like so many of your other thoughts?" Lucifer teases lightly.

Mc laughs, but it's breathless, forced. They know their demons notice and feel their attention focus firmly onto them.

"I just.....it's dumb humans thoughts." They try to wave off.

"Dumb humans thoughts?" Diavolo echos.

"I guess I just don't know what to make of myself. Like, what am I? A fleeting fancy? A short citation in the grand scheme of things? I can't help but feel like everything I do and am is temporary."

They feel Lucifer gently take their hands unto his, looking up their vision is slightly blurred as they realize that tears had formed in the corner of their eyes. They don't block the look on Lucifer's face, an indescribable amount of softness bleeds through him.

"You're not a "fleeting fancy", you changed my - and I know many others, lives for the better." Lucifer speaks with a genuineness they didn't he could ever possess.

"So, I guess my legacy with live through something, at least." They respond with a sober chuckle. Face shifting downwards, unable to see Lucifer's face shift, concern painting his features.

"Legacy?" Diavolo echos once more.

"Yeah. After I die, what's going to stick?"

The room gets deathly quiet. Barbatos's gaze stays locked on the floor, while Lucifer looks like he just got cold water dumped onto him. They can't see Diavolo's face behind them, but they can feel the air turn cold.

"Sorry, I know it's morbid. I guess I'm just a mortal around immortals. I can't help but think about this stuff." They quickly wave themselves off, shifting back into the sheets as they lay back down.

None of their demons follow suit, as they stare in confusion and worry between them.

Finally, it's Diavolo who breaks the silence.

"What do you mean by die?" He asks, voice tined with an uncharacteristic stoicism.

They stare the demon in confusion. Surely he knows, right?

"Diavolo," they start gently. As though they're a parent explaining to their child why their hamster isn't moving anymore. "I'm a human? I'm going to die one day - not like, soon! But like. You're immortal, I'm not, surely there's going to be a time when you exist and I, uh, don't."

Honestly they know that death isn't a pleasant conversation for anybody, but surely they must have thought about this before. So why does Diavolo look like they're said something competently unpredictable?

"Being human and being mortal isn't mutually exclusive." Lucifer states matter of factly. Yet when they turn to look at him they can see the desperation in their eyes, the blind hope, the silent ask.

"R-right! Take Solomon for example, he's fully human yet has gained immortality." Diavolo echos. Through instead of hope it sounds self assuring, as though he's trying to convice himself.

Mc stares at the demon prince, eyes wide like saucers. "But like, isn't that....against the rules? You extend a human life?" They can't help but spare a glance towards Lucifer. Words left unsaid.

They feel Diavolo's arms tighten around them in a vice like grip, if he wasn't being so gentle Mc knows it would hurt.

"I'm the prince of the Devildom - the future king, if I say something is law it is." Diavolo almost growls out, voice deep and demonic. But Mc knows what lays underneath all that bravo; a scared little kid whose terrified of losing the people he loves.

Mc knows how to speak in silences, they know what they're asking. What they're eating for but can't bring themselves to voice. The scariest part is that Mc has no idea what they're going answer even if they get asked.

Swallowing dryly, their full of cotton they try to wave the conversation off. Plastering on their sunny smile they lean back into Diavolo.

"Hey, this is getting a bit much. I mean, I'm 21! I have decades and decades left! It isn't like I'm going to die any time soon." They reinsure.

"But....eventually."

"Well, yeah, sure eventually. But everything ends eventually. Who knows we could hate each other in a few decades! We don't know."

"But you are going to leave us, we know that." Diavolo states soberly. Mc knows they're a coward when they don't turn to face him, knowing that there's tears in his eyes.

Breathing deeply they ready themselves to make a promise they don't know if they can keep.

"Well, like you said, that isn't set stone either." Nudging Barbatos with their foot they snap him out of his trace. Barbatos flinches when make contact, eyes snapping towards them before refocusing. "The future is unpredictable, right Barbs?"

Barbatos stills, an uncertain look paints his face. Mc knows that he was looking through time lines, desperate to find what needs to be done, needs to be said, to keep them close to him.

"Right. The future is anything but predictable."

This is a (currently) abandoned WIP for Izana TW for him being crazy“I just feel like we… need some time apart Izana,” You said quietly, not really knowing how to say it louder than a whisper with your throat tightening up. He was silent for a moment, body almost deathly still as you watched him for any movement, alarm bells ringing so loud in your ears you gritted your teeth. You took an instinctual step back when he suddenly whirled around on you, orchid eyes blazing through red bloodshot and unshed tears. Everything in you was screaming to run, to not stand so close to him. A ticking time bomb.  “I really hope you didn’t say what I think you said”. His voice was like injecting ice water into your veins, freezing you to the floor.  “It’s just-” “Just what? That you need a break? That you don’t love me anymore?” He ranted, his voice growing louder and louder with every question as he stalked forward until his nose was almost touching yours. “Tell me what it is. Spit it out". Your throat felt tight like your tongue had swollen.

“If you want to keep that hand attached to your wrist I suggest lowering it, and stepping away from her” Shoto’s tone was dark, sending a shot of adrenaline through you when you noticed him over Keigo’s shoulder standing at the top of the stairs. “I’m doing what the King has told me to do,” Keigo said, looking away from you and allowing you time to move around him and go to where Shoto was.  “And I’m telling you, try anything again and I’ll cut your throat open, Hear me?”. His expression was murderous, the glint in his eye begging for blood. The blonde seemed to weigh his options, betting on how serious Shoto actually was, and eventually made the smartest decision of not testing him. He made a small sound in the back of his throat, like he was noting something of interest, and walked past both of you to descend the stairs. “Are you alright?” Shoto asked you, his turning soft as turned his gaze to you, checking carefully for any thread out of place.

Blinks. It seems that I have been tagged to play the Last Line Tag by @dustylovelyrun, which is a lovely surprise. I didnt think anyone was paying attention to my sparse works but, I'm happy to play nonetheless!

Per the rules (well, guidelines), I'm meant to post the last lines of my wip, but since my very last had to be the kidnapped Hob shot im trying to fulfill with Yan and possibly Yue if they ever check their tumblr notifs (😅), I'll post some last lines from my other wips instead

I miss him, a GO/Sandman crossover fic, of Aziraphale traversing the Dreaming in October of 2020, when Crowley had promised to wake up and yet remains stubbornly asleep;

She would have, thought Dream, but when he hears of the battle of the Tadfield Airbase, the reason becomes distressingly clear. She had survived by the hair’s breadth’s bluff. A son of Lucifer could have hurt her, as surely as they had injured the rest of the Horsemen, by Silver Blade and Divine fire. 

She wouldn’t have wanted Dream to worry, and his thirst for vengeance was that of legends. Hypocrite, Dream thought fondly. He will be sure to bring it up when she next swoops in for an unannounced visit. Perhaps even a family dinner.

I am Hope, another GO/Sandman wip of the Oldest Game tournament between Dream and Lucifer, from Crowley's POV

He remains suspended, well above the teeming masses, and sees the Unholy Lord and their unsolicited guest where they perch upon the balcony that overlooks them all, and  Crowley recognizes him indeed. His preferred form of deathly pallor and feather soft head of hair is unmistakable in their beauty, the persona of all that Yearns and Longs and Hopes. 

Dream of the Endless sets a glare upon Lucifer Morningstar that would have been unforgivable by any other entity, but he is a monarch of power of his own right, and he has-as far as Crowley knows-broken no laws. Lucifer simply smiles.

Finally, an untitled dreamling Royal AU, with mysterious Prince Morpheus and Hob being Death's knight

Hob raises a curious brow. "Were you, then?" He prods. "Planning to give someone a sort of shakedown?" 

There is a telling silence as Matthew stares down the circle of ale left behind from the slosh of Hob’s cup, shifting uncomfortably. Hob lets him stew in it. His patience is larger than most would suspect of him, not that it takes very long at all.

20 Questions Writer’s Edition

Thank you for tagging me @fawnandshadows Sorry that it took me a small eternity to answer these questions. 1) How many works on AO3? 5 I am quite new to writing fanfiction. I started writing this April. 2) AO3 total word count? 195,774 Wow. That's a lot. (I love being able to say that I've written something that is longer than some of the HP books) 3) How many fandoms have you written for and what are they? Only ACOTAR so far. And only Elriel. But I would like to write for some other fandoms at some point. 4) Top five works by kudos? 1. Pretty Little Angel 2. Please 3. ASMR 4. Happy Halloween 5. The bet 5) Do you respond to comments, why or why not? I try to! At first when I started writing, I didn't reply to most comments because I didn't know that people usually replied to comments. I mainly replied if someone asked something or commented on something specific in the chapter. However, I do try to answer all/most comments now because I have realized how much I like it when people reply to my comments :) I do know that I suck at replying, and sometimes I just forget (or it can take WEEKS). I am, unfortunately, the same with messages from like friends and family, so just be happy that you have never tried to text me. I am the absolute worst when it comes to texting (and replying to comments.) But I read every single one of them and they really make my days <3

6) Fic with angstiest ending? None. I like happy endings. And honestly, I am a bit afraid of receiving hate if I wrote something with an angsty ending. 7) Happiest Ending? All of them. (I haven't finished Pretty Little Angel yet, but I think it will have a happy ending too) 8) Do you write crossovers? What is the craziest one? No, not really. Unless my Halloween fic where Azriel and Elain dress up as Rey and Kylo can be considered a crossover? But I don't think so. So no. 9) Ever received hate on a fic? No, thank god. I don't deal with criticism (or hate/drama) very well. 10) Do you write smut? If so, what kind? Yes. All of my fics are more or less smutty. What kind? I guess the kinky kind with a lot of praise. 11) Ever had a fanfic stolen? Nope! 12) Ever had a fic translated? No. I didn't know that people translated fics? That's kind of cool! But I don't think I would want someone else to translate my work. I'm too much of a control freak, and I have a hard time trusting translations. (Probably because I have studied language and translation and KNOW how difficult it is to translate correctly.) 13) Ever co-written a fic? No. Or actually. Yes! I took a creative writing course at Uni where we had to write collaborative fanfiction (Yes. It's true!). But apart from that, no. I have not. And I don't think I will. 14) All time favorite ship? Reylo! (I mainly read reylo fanfics actually) I also like Elriel and Dramione. 15) What is a WIP you want to finish but don’t think you ever will? I don't have very many WIPs. If I start something, I will try to finish it! However I did start writing a Nesta/Amren fic once, but I only wrote like half a page before giving up. So maybe that's my WIP that I will never finish? 16) Writing Strengths? Smut? and I think I'm pretty good at writing dialogue, and I get a lot of positive comments about my characterization, so I guess I'm good at that too? (I've always been very bad at seeing my own strengths...) 17) Writing weaknesses? I find it very difficult to write kissing scenes (hence why it took like 24 chapter for them to kiss in PLA, hehe). But my biggest weakness is probably the fact that English is a foreign language to me. I don't speak it daily (but I do speak it a few times a week for work), and even though most people speak English quite well in my country, we don't really speak English to each other in our every day life. I did study English at university, but I still feel that I am lacking. And since I tend to compare myself to English writers, it's very easy for me to criticize my own language skills (even though I know that my English is very good). I feel that I repeat the same phrases quite often, and that I use the same words over and over again, even though I try to be mindful of repetitions and synonyms and such. 18) what are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in fic? Hmm... I only like it if the author translates the dialogue. (I also think that the author should know the language to some degree and not use google translate). I prefer it if the translation is given naturally in the context of the fic, but I'm okay with providing the translation in the end notes. 19) What was the first fandom you wrote for? If I told you, I would have to kill you. No, but honestly. That information goes with me to my grave. It's too embarrassing. But I can say that it was for a band I liked when I was like 16. It was not a cool band. 20) What is your favorite fic you’ve written? Pretty Little Angel. Even though it's like 80% smut, I'm quite proud of it. Especially since people seem to like it. When I first started writing it, I didn't think people would read it since I wasn't a part of this fandom or anything at the time. I think that I've written Elain and Azriel very well in this fic, and I have tried to stay true to their characters, so that's why PLA is my favorite. I also think that some of the smutty chapters are very sexy :)
