Having slurped down Swords and Fire I do also now want to write a story where Daine is a full-on Witchlord.

Hi!

I'll keep this update short, I've revamped Azriel's mate. Instead of Hypaxia, her name is Gwyneth (yes she's canon divergent version of the same one from Acotar).

I actually enjoyed her in the books but was wary of making her with all the shipping wars, but now I don't really care ha. I've detailed her backstory below, for those interested.

Gwyneth grew up in Winter, the sixth child of Witchlord Andulvar and High Lady Twyla of Winter. She had five older brothers, presumptive Heir Ravenar, twins Caldris & Caelum, and Kallias & Xanthos.

By the civil war, she'd lost her parents, Ravenar and Xanthos to death. Caleum and Caldris disappeared, many people from the other courts went missing as well in the final days of the war.

Kallias ascended to High Lord of Winter. And when Tamlin abdicated from Spring following his mate Aliren's death, the Court's magic chose her.

In abdication, Tamlin forfeited all his future descendants access to the throne. Gwenyth, being only 20 was sent by Kallias to Sangravah with Ravenar's mate Syrena.

When Hybern attacks the temple, Syrena dies and Azriel takes her to Night to recover like in canon. (happy to have it be a bond neither recognize snapping in the chaos or not). Azriel saves her before the Hybern General can do what he wants with her.

Gwyn, like in canon feels survivor's guilt and is urged to learn to fight by Nesta as they prepare for war with Hybern?

And Rhysand now has the next High Lady to Spring. Gwyneth is 25, traumatized and malleable. I assume Kallias and he are still friends so I doubt he sees anything wrong haha.

I was surprised to learn that this was a series as the first book wrapped up nicely enough that it felt like a standalone, but I did love the world and characters so I was thrilled to learn that their journeys continued. It was great to see how the characters continued to develop, with book-loving Amalia taking further steps into the realm of politics and gaining alliances such as considering political marriage with a witchlord. I really enjoyed the new characters that were introduced and how they shook up the dynamics among the existing cast. Zaira remains championing for her freedom and the freedom of the other mages, and successfully convinces Amalia to use her position as the Cornatto heir to begin enacting change. The expansion of the political world was also fascinating, to see how other nations were run along with the continuation of the Vaskandar plot threads from the first book.
