The Power Fantasy (2024) #6 and #2
#I admit I was confused by the line ‘Imagine growing up in the room you know your parents fucked in’ so I had to go back and check#so it seems that Kid Ignition is stuck in that room except for when Haven is specifically sealed#in order to prevent Etienne from telepathically finding him#and only then can he leave#‘Family time’ is scheduled- but it also be something Heavy just announces#however Kid Ignition can bring people into his room without his dad knowing and having to do anything to make it safe for them to enter#he’s got a skateboard in his room- which he can’t use in there#so he leaves enough to have outside hobbies#it seems that ‘Family time’ can be a big ceremony in which everyone is present for Kid Ignition to leave his room#and something that just happens in the background of everyone else’s lives at Haven when Heavy goes to interact with his son#I really like what this series is doing with the word ‘family’#‘Sure this is /my/ family… but it’s /the/ Family too.’#‘Family isn’t always Family. Etienne’s Family and he threatened to kill everyone at Haven.’#also the premise of the series of all of this incredibly powerful people in tense situations but trying to avoid outright fighting-#with some of them calling each other Family#I’m really interested in Kid Ignition’s psychological state being raised in this way#the first ‘Family time’ we see is such an intensely cult-like ceremony#I imagine being ‘stuck in the fucking bubble’- never having left Haven- would have warped his perspective on non-Atomic people#who he’s never met#he only knows what he’s heard- which is that they oppress Atomics#also Kid Ignition must be woefully unprepared for navigating the delicate conflict between the Super-Powers#with his experience just interacting with people being limited to those in his dad’s cult#I wonder if there will be anything interesting done paralleling his unique mental state with Masumi’s#I think there’s potential there#image comics#the power fantasy#my posts#comic panels

(copy/pasting this last paragraph bc i literally hit the mobile image limit tumblr when i get you:)
also. i think chiaki wants in one day after seeing them. nagito is Immensly upset about this but keeps his composure . because now hajime is his knees and that's fine too.. i hink chiaki's trying to be careful to not dirty but hajimes like "u cant garden right if ure too scared of getting kinda dirty! god made dirt and dirt dont hurt ^o^" (this is also how he justifies eating slightly dirted from dropping food. i mean he is a farmboy i dont doubt he wouldnt od that.) LOLL toodles ^w^
—————————
OKAY. so tumblr hates fun and glitched this ask out so i couldn’t answer it but i do not care i Will Answer It.
@spinecurlingmice (@ing you so u get the notif) i could kiss you on the mouth MWWWAH this is gorgeous and lines up so well with things i already have in mind for priest au. literally everything here fits into the canon i have in mind it’s perfect. i’ve been wanting to do more worldbuilding and such but i get really tired (lots of research…. lots and lots of googling) and you’ve done such an important thing for me by finding incredible plant symbolism. mwwah mwah mwah thank youuuu <333 obsessed with a lot of this but this post is long as hell already so it’s tags time
#ask#mice#priest au#i really really love how hajime being there gets nagito to put more effort into the church#through hajime’s sacrifice of his own self worth and determination he betters his community#GOD that’s such good metaphors. also keeping up appearances yumyum#obsessed with your plant choices. dahlias have so much fun symbolism it is SO clever to include them… aren’t they toxic too..#the kmda checking out hnta while he gardens… i actually think hnta would be kind of oblivious to this at first#he always feels like he’s being watched at church. like there’s eyes boring into him at all times#…he must finally be feeling the presence of God!#OH and the cash thing… ur so real#without sharing too much. when kmda inherited the church from his parents he also inherited a fair amount of. tithings.#he likes to keep the church humble so he doesn’t spend too much at first. just keeps the place clean and maintained and pretty#but not like. opulent. fanciest thing in there is the stained glass#but then hajime shows up. and all these little purchases start to appear— and; well; they better the church so it’s justified#hajime being proud of having His Watering Can like a dog boasting about its tags… so good#naming the lily ‘shelby.’ he’s so cute i love him#ALSO HNTA ESSENTIALLY WORKING TWO JOBS…. ‘i’m devoting myself to the lord this is good this is good’ (he is exhausted)#also ‘god made dirt and dirt don’t hurt’ that’s soooo cute. no u don’t understand how cute that is#ohhhhh my little farm boy…. :((( into torment realm you go hurry along now#i need to get some architecture sketches of the town down…. general city plan + some of the important buildings#that’ll be kinda fun to figure out actually

I snapped today at work, and by snapped I mean I politely commented on a help desk ticket by summing up an mess of an (type of) issue that's come up for at least the fourth time in the 2+ months I've been managing user accounts, and asked the person responsible to fix it (himself for once) because last time I fixed his mess-up it took me two whole days to work out the details with at least four other colleagues from different departments and I really don't want to do it again. there's other shit that needs doing, I've been working 10+ hour days for most of this week already, so I need to cut down not add on more.
(good thing tho - at least we managed to fix the issue where the dataset of a newer employee got mixed up with another one of the same name and therefore wasn't able to apply for any of the access/accounts she needed. technically not entirely my area but it does impact us not being allowed to create an account for her so I figured I might as well track that issue down. took three days and at least three other people, but hey - it should all work out now. yay for that)
#been feeling anxious af ever since bc it's the first time I've been this firm in a reply and idk how they'll take it#there's underlying issues in inter-departmental communication that need fixing that cause these issues to happen again and again#but my boss is on parental leave and his substitute is sick not that she cares or is up for doing her job where communication is concerned#so there's no real sense in addressing that rn esp by me who's only been there since June. but it does frustrate me a lot#anyway. I'm sure I'll get over this too. but yeah.. ppl not thinking things through for the two mins it takes to create an account#or the twenty seconds it takes to check if one already exists before creating a new one#or the minute it takes to check if folks still have an active contract past their time working in your department before deleting an accoun#just jfc. put in a smidge of effort and five mins total and save the rest of us from spending half a day to fix your mistake#oh well. if I get a pissy response I'll just blame it on being new as an intern and being too motivated and idealistic I guess#god forbid I expect people to do their jobs thoroughly or with at least a singular thought..#anyway. I feel like I'm allowed to be grumpy abt this since we are the folks who end up having to fix this shit#and by we I mean pretty much mostly me at this point bc one colleague is sick atm. my boss barely has time for this and is on leave#and my other colleague only works half time so I'm the one who's been handling most of these over the past month or so#which.. is still insane considering how I'm a goddamn intern who shouldn't even have admin rights tbh#but without them I couldn't do anything at all lol so here I am. nice that they trust and believe in me I suppose#that's why I try to do my best. (who am I kidding that's always the case anyway)#but yeah. definitely a 50% staff support job and only 50% of the other important things that need doing rn it's more like 90/10#and it's funny how I still dread my two hours of hotline. but every time the line is too busy I still jump in#we are also only 6 people atm out of 10 and three of us are still in training. and one of the trained folks had to come back in mid time of#next week we'll likely be 4#depending on if our substitute boss lady is back.. not that I'd look forward to it. she's a mess and she's been horrible to deal with latel#sure. she's stressed. but she's either snapping at me when I ask abt shit I can't know yet or she's ignoring me. great basis for team work.#so honestly I'd rather she not return on Monday. esp not if she's gonna spread her germs everywhere#but now sleep. sorry for the rant. it's certainly been quite the month since I returned from my own wisdom tooth rated sick leave..#gotta be up again in 6.5 hrs so I can be at work at 6 to let the electrician in. I'm gonna sleep so hard over the weekend I stg#a day in the life of..

Daryl Dixon masterlist

Before the apocalypse, you'd say your life wasn't bad. You had a decent job that paid well. A husband, a dog, and a house you owned all on your own, without any help from your parents.
You had met Daryl fresh out of college. He was staying with Merle at the time. In a rush to get away from your parents, you found a rent-to-own house on the outskirts of Atlanta. It wasn't extravagant, only having 2 beds and one bath. It was still a house-your house.
The first time you went to the grocery store to stock up before you started work since the big move, an old man had hit on you. Daryl listened from afar, not wanting to cause any more trouble for you. He knew you hadn't been in these parts of town before, he hadn't seen you before.
After many attempts at shooting the guy down, Daryl had to intervene. The guy had grabbed your arm, and before you knew it, the guy was backing away from you.
“She said she's not interested.”
“My bad, man. Didn't know she was yours.” He raised his hands, grin still on his face. It was a game to him.
“So you only take no for an answer if I 'belong' to someone?” Venom laced your voice, disgust painted into the wrinkles between your eyebrows and frown lines, glaring through the guy. A chuckle rumbled out of his chest, followed by a smoker's cough that told you he had more tar in his lungs than he had sense in his brain.
“Ma'am, will all due respect-”
“I doubt anything respectful comes out of that raunchy mouth of yours.”
His grin dropped, eyes slanting in your direction. “This one sure has a mouth on her,” his attention moved back to Daryl. “She have that mouth in the sack?”
You scoffed, glancing down at the floor, collecting the words you wanted to shoot back at him.
In the time you looked away, Daryl had put the 12-pack of beer down and swung. You snapped your head up at the sound of a fist colliding with a cheek. Daryl glared, spitting at the man as he held his cheek in shock. “Give the lady some respect, prick.”
“Damnit, Dixon!” An elderly man came running down the aisle, a manager tag clinking against the pins on his shirt. Safe to say both men had been kicked out.
After checking out, you caught sight of Daryl hunched over, looking at his bruising knuckles.
“Here's for helping me.”
Daryl's head shot up, eyes flickering to the 12-pack in your outstretched hand. “Ya didn't have to.”
“You didn't have to.” He shrugged, taking the box from you.
the rest was history.
You eventually got together, then, moved in together. He supported you in your job, making jokes about you “bringing home the bacon”. The only downside was his brother.
“Damnit, Merle.”
An intoxicated Merle flopped on your couch, cackling up at Daryl. You watched from behind the couch, arms folded across Daryl's shirt draping over your form. Daryl's own top half was bare, his muscles flexing when he folded his arms in disappointment, glaring down.
“What? Did I interrupt you 'n your housewife duties?”
You scoffed, turning around to walk back to your room, the dog Daryl had gotten you for your birthday following after you. Merle watched your movement, lowly whistling. “I'd be a housewife for that piece, too.”
Daryl grabbed the collar of Merle's shirt, bringing him to eye level. “Don't talk about my wife like that.” He threw him back against the couch, “You're out by the mornin'.”
The world had gone to shit right in the middle of your workday. Everyone was running around, yelling and panicking. You tried making a beeline for your car, getting pushed and pulled every which way. The traffic was the worst you had ever seen, when you had finally made your way onto the road.
When you finally got home, the door was open.
You rushed in, looking in every room. There was no sign of Daryl besides the place being completely trashed, in a rush to leave. He wasn't there. You had no clue where he was, if he was safe, if he knew what was happening.
You cracked the backdoor open, nearly falling to your knees. A body laid on the back porch, blood dried on its way down the person's forehead. A lump of fur and blood was right beside it. A sob racked your body on your way back to your car. Your knuckles were ghostly white as they gripped the steering wheel, as you made your way out of town, away from the life you worked hard to get and worked harder to keep.
You eventually got stuck in even more traffic. Everything only got worse when your car ran out of gas.
You had to hide in the city, which was run with zombies. Luckily for you, you had found a few bodies that hadn't turned yet, stealing anything that could be used as a weapon. You were able to stay safe, hiding in an empty office building. Living off of the vending machines and what was left in the break rooms.
You regularly walked up to the roof, getting fresh air, wondering where Daryl had gone and if he was thinking of you. Sure, a part of you wanted to be mad at him for leaving without you, but you knew he had to have his reasons. Merle had to of made him run away with him when the news first got out.
While you looked over the edge, watching as dead bodies herded together, feasting on whatever had run into the city on your way up here, you saw quick movement to your left. Swirling around, you held your gun up, pointing it at the kid in front of you.
“Woah, Hey! I'm alive- I'm alive! Not going to hurt you.” The poor boy might as well have been shivering in his boots. His hands shook in the air. He was probably the third person you've seen, alive, since you squatted in the top floor. He didn't seem like the guy to kill you just to take your stuff. “Look, there's a guy in the tank down there. I'm just trying to help him.” You thought back to the sounds of pained neighing you heard when you first stepped onto the roof, but you had shrugged it off, figuring you were going insane already. No sleep and being isolated will do that to you. “C'mon, dude.” He was practically begging you to not shoot him in the head.
What would Daryl do in this situation? He wouldn't just trust anyone when it comes to survival. You reluctantly put your gun down, watching as he sighed in relief. You hid the shake in your hands when they fell to your sides, not wanting him to know you didn't want to kill him even if he were dangerous.
“We have to get down there to help him.” The boy leaned over the edge, at the tank and the 'geeks' that surrounded it.
“We?”
He looked back at you, then to the tank. “The extra help would be appreciated.”
Somehow, you followed after him, climbing down fire escapes and counting the amount of bodies in each alleyway. He was quick, but you kept up with him with ease.
He led you down the alleyway, hiding behind the trashcans and gate separating you and a painful death. “You have good aim? I need you to shoot that big guy closest to the tank.” He whispered, fixing the hat on his head.
You glanced at him, watching as he awaited your next move. You whispered back, “it's empty.” You held the gun up in emphasis. You weren't going to tell him that when it was pointed at him. He huffed, throwing his head back. “I only have a knife.”
He shrugged off his backpack, grabbing the empty gun and throwing it in there. It was useless with no bullets, and it only took up a hand, making it harder for you to climb.
“Alright, change of plans.” He grabbed the walkie, bringing it to his mouth before pressing the button. “Hey, you alive in there?”
A frantic voice broke through the static, “Hello? Hello?!”
The next thing you knew, you were running downstairs with the young boy, Glenn, you had figured out, and the guy you nearly died saving, Rick. Glenn led you two to another alleyway, before the door to the building in front of you busted open, 2 people filing out with gear and helmets on, attacking the walkers wondering in front of you.
“Lets go!” Glenn jumped over the bodies on the ground, running through the door, you and Rick following. As soon as you were through the door, you were pushed to the other side of the wall, before Rick was pushed back, a gun aimed at his face. “You son of a bitch! We ought to kill you.” A blonde woman was seething, ready to put a bullet in Rick's head.
“Just chill out, Andrea. Back off.” One of the guys who bashed the walker's head in pulled off the armor, glaring at the blonde.
“Come on, ease up.”
“Ease up? You're kidding me, right? We're dead because of this stupid asshole.” The gun was pointed at you next, “And her.” Her finger twitched on the trigger, but you were at a loss of words.
“She helped.” Glenn was ignored.
“Andrea, I said, back the hell off. Or pull the trigger.” The same guy from before stepped forward, closer to Andrea. It was silent for a second, before Andrea dropped her hand, lips quivering with oncoming tears. You took a breath, having the room to do so when a gun isn't pointed at you.
“We're dead,” Andrea sobbed, “All of us.” Her gaze moved back to Rick, “Because of you.”
You wondered after everyone as they walked through the old building, listening as they scolded rick for firing his gun.
“No signal. Maybe the roof.” The man, who was introduced as T-Dog, said, holding the walkie. Before anyone else could reply, a gun shot fired, echoing from above.
“Oh no, Is that Dixon?”
“Dixon?”
Andrea stopped her movement, looking back at you. “Yeah. What, you know 'em?”
Sadly, you were met with a distasteful Merle on the roof. He refused to tell you about Daryl-about how Merle had to drag in out of the house. About how Daryl wanted to pick you up and take you with them. About how Daryl had gone back, against Merle's wishes, and found you nowhere in the house. But you weren't told that, so the nerves in your stomach still fluttered, making you feel like you were going to vomit any minute. The only thing he told you was that Daryl was with the rest of the group by the quarry.
The nerves still fluttered even on your way to the said quarry. The thought of Merle being trapped in the roof was at the back of your mind, the thought of seeing Daryl for the first time in God knows how long, being front and center in your mind. Your leg shook with nerves as you sat in the back of the van, hitting a bump every once in a while, and knocking into one of the other people.
The van pulled up to the quarry, people piling out of the back, running to their families.
You were introduced to a woman named Carol. She was surprised when you told her that you knew Daryl. The short time she had known the man, she couldn't think of him having a soft spot for anyone, but here you were. She told you that he had gone hunting and that he should be back before dawn.
You sat around, getting to know everyone. As soon as Carol's husband raised his voice to her, you had kept an eye on him, instantly feeling protective of the woman. As she silently did for you. She kept an eye on you, making sure you felt comfortable among all of the strangers.
Night fell and there was still no sign of Daryl. You distracted yourself by helping Carol with whatever, or Dale with lookout. You hadn't told anyone much about you and Daryl. Mostly because you couldn't form a coherent sentence with Daryl on your mind. Where was he? Was he okay? Why wasn't he back? The band around your ring finger became a fidget habit. You spun it around any time the thoughts got too much.
The crisp morning air did little to wake you. You might as well have been a walker with how you sluggishly moved around camp, helping with anything, wanted to be helpful and pull your weight.
Carol handed you another pair of soaked pants, to ring the water out and hang it up to dry. While doing so, your eyes caught sight of Rick and Lori. They had been reunited. When was it your turn?
“How did you and Daryl meet?” Glancing back up at Carol, you cleared your throat to speak.
Before you could utter a word, a scream echoed throughout the camp, followed by Carl's screams for his mother.
Everyone stopped what they were doing, a few running toward the screaming, ready for the worst.
You walked behind the group, watching as Rick, Glenn, Dale, Shane, and a few others beat the walker that had made it from the city.
Dale swung down with his axe, cutting the head clean off the walker's body.
“It's the first one we've had up here.” He heaved, “They never come this far up the mountain.”
“Well, they're running out of food in the city, that's what.” Another guy, Jim, said, wiping the sweat from his brow.
Branches snapped, followed by more footsteps. The guys with the weapons moved toward the sound, weapons ready.
Your breath caught in your throat.
He hadn't seen you yet.
Daryl stepped over branches, slightly taken aback with everyone standing in front of him, ready to strike.
Everyone took a step back, “Oh, Jesus.” Dale's shoulders released the tension.
“Son of a bitch.” Daryl cursed, “That's my deer!” He walked to what was left of the poor animal.
He looked how he did when you first met. Frustration clear on his brow. You had helped him get rid of the constant scrunch of his brow and frown on his lips, and here it was, making its appearance in a dramatic manner.
“Look at it, all gnawed on by this-” He kicked the headless body that laid on the ground, “filthy,” kick “disease-bearing,” kick “motherless,” kick “poxy bastard!”
“Calm down, son. That's not helping.” Dale peeped, infuriating Daryl more.
“What do you know about it, old man?” Daryl walked closer, getting in Dale's face. "Why don't you take that stupid hat and go back to “On Golden Pond”?"
“Daryl.”
Daryl paused, his face dropping. He turned to the voice, his knees nearly collapsing from underneath him.
Before you could say anything else, his crossbow was dropping to the ground, followed by the string of squirrels on his shoulder. He rushed over, his body colliding with yours. His calloused hands pulled your face closer to his.
He didn't care if everyone was watching. Or if the scene made them think differently about his tough-guy thing he had going on. His lips moved against yours.
“I didn't know where you were.” He mumbled against your lips. “I tried looking everywhere-”
“I know, I know. Doesn't matter.”

can I request house wardens + leech twins with a reader who doesn't eat enough bc Crowley doesn't give them enough for food, and they end up really ill and collapsing or something. I'm cravin some fluffy comfort rn, pls and thank you 🙏
I got you🫡🫡 as someone who's been through an eerily similar situation, I really liked this request
*ੈ✩‧₊˚ another crowley moment™️
type of post: headcanons characters: riddle, leona, azul, floyd, jade, kalim, vil, idia, malleus additional info: romantic or platonic, reader is gender neutral, reader is yuu, mentions of food and not eating
Tumblr media
Riddle wouldn't even have to like you to rush to your side. but he does like you, which makes it all the worse
after checking your vitals, you're in the infirmary. he's got doctors for parents, after all, and he knows that malnutrition is bad
he should have seen the signs...
with exams coming, he's been so busy, and he assumed that you were just tired from studying
but he can feel guilty later. right now, he needs to focus on you getting well again, and not killing Crowley
(then, of course, he'll look for some legal statute or clause that he can threaten Crowley with so you're fed properly)
*ੈ✩‧₊˚
Leona noticed you'd been acting a little weird lately, but watching you collapse still puts him in shock
luckily, Ruggie and Jack are nearby to help you to the infirmary, so Leona can focus on hunting Crowley down like an animal
there are very few times where Leona is particularly grateful for his status, but this is one of them. just one word on how his family will be hearing about Crowley's neglect, and the old bastard is begging him for forgiveness
even after that, Leona still sends Ruggie with snacks and drinks to Ramshackle
and if you ever scare him like that again, you'll regret it (lovingly)
*ੈ✩‧₊˚
the news of you collapsing during flight lessons reaches Octavinelle rather fast. no one is particularly surprised, since Floyd had mentioned how easily you'd been bruising lately just the night before, but everyone is certainly worried
Azul is the first at your side, asking you all sorts of questions, worried sick. Jade has to remind him to give you space to rest, since you look exhausted (had you always had those dark circles? how could Azul have not noticed?)
now, Azul and the tweels could easily find a way to pressure Crowley, but they know better than to trust him
from now on, you'll be eating in the Mostro Lounge, free of charge
*ੈ✩‧₊˚
perhaps Kalim was just oblivious, because he really didn't think anything was wrong until you were suddenly on the floor in front of him
sure, you'd been a little moody lately, but he figured it was just a thing you were going through. and besides, you know that you can talk to him about anything... right?
Jamil hurries to check your pulse, and shouts for him to get the school nurse- which is jarring, because Jamil never shouts
when you explain everything to Kalim later, he feels... terrible. he should've known- no, he should've asked
Kalim insists you stay at Scarabia while you're recovering, and makes sure you have the most enriching, delicious meals money can buy
*ੈ✩‧₊˚
Vil knew it was bad, but not this bad. if he had known you were on the verge of collapsing, he would've taken a firmer approach to getting you to eat
you're going to worry him to death someday, you know that?
after he's done verbally eviscerating Crowley, he'll insist on joining you at every meal. he'll eat at Ramshackle, breakfast, lunch, and dinner, if that's what it takes
he's subtle about it, at least
if he notices that your plate feels empty, he'll just take some food from his and put it on yours. gracefully, elegantly, without a word
you'll come home one day to see your kitchen stocked with vitamins, supplements, and apples (courtesy of Epel)
<3 and a note that says he'll treat you to dinner whenever you want
*ੈ✩‧₊˚
never scare Idia like that ever again. he wasn't even with you when you collapsed, and he STILL nearly had a heart attack
listen, he knows he's not a great role model when it comes to nutritional eating, but you have got to tell him these things. he would've had Ortho go get takeout! or something!
typical Crowley behavior, SMH. what does he think you are? a rabbit? even the school horses get treated better...
no way that Idia is going to even bother with that old fart, anyway. you want something? he'll get it for you. you don't even have to ask, he'll just send food to your place (and have Ortho check your vitals more often but shhh)
*ੈ✩‧₊˚
I would not want to be in the room when Malleus finds out about this
not even the building. you know what? I'd steer clear of the whole island, because it will not be pretty
when you collapse in front of him, it feels like he's dying, too. the panic sets in, and he sends Lilia to look after you, and Silver and Sebek to escort you to the infirmary, and then he casually threatens to smite Crowley. obviously
if the students and staff of NRC thought Malleus was scary just being Malleus, he's terrifying when he's mad
(rest assured that you will be getting ten times the amount of food from now on)
it's thunderstorms for days after, but he never leaves your side

so my younger cousin is flying in to visit from brazil on sunday, and will be staying here for like, the entirety of july. which, don't get me wrong, is super cool! i love the kid! but it felt like a super weird move, considering his parents are the SUPER strict and borderline helicopter parents. even the smallest prank/roughousing with him/his little sister would lead to a strict talking to from his parents, he couldn't ever do anything without their clear permission, that sort of stuff. so letting him fly at alone at 16 to a whole different country and stay there for a whole month seemed WILDLY out of character. additionally, it just felt like a super last-minute trip. it's not like we have any plans to do when he gets here, and the flight itself and stuff only got booked like, midway through june.
and i was talking to my mom about it, kind of trying to nudge some answers out of her, and after a while she went, "yeah, i think they're sending him over here to get away for his boyfriend. see if the distance breaks them off." which, first of all, surprised me because last i checked, they didn't KNOW he had a boyfriend. literally everyone in the family did EXCEPT for them because while that entire side of the family being semi-conservative, his parents (mostly his dad) are EXTREMELY old-fashioned. so clearly something already went wrong. and considering the only reason the rest of the family knew is because one person found out and it spread like wildfire, i have a sneaking suspicion he wasn't the one to tell them, either.
and second of all. they're sending him HERE. to try to make him forget his homosexuality. i couldn't do anything but just wordlessly gesture to the multiple pride flags scattered around my room, then to myself, because really? he has like two other cousins in the us and they're sending him to me? honey i am about to introduce this kid to queer scenes you have never even heard of. he'll be returning home with labels only shrimp can perceive

She watched her family give up everything for Charles’ career—Arthur’s karting, their father’s savings, even her childhood horse. She understood. She never asked for more.
But Max does. He notices the things no one else does, listens when no one else will, and puts her first in ways she never imagined. With him, she isn’t an afterthought—she’s a choice. And for the first time, she realizes she doesn’t have to be invisible.
Warnings and Notes:
we have now moved on from Charles bashing to bashing his whole family, Discussions of toxic past relationships, talk about loosing a childhood pet, toxic families, mention of the loss of a parent. Apparently I am once again messing up my chapter numbering on Tumblr. 21 is correct according to AO3 and Wattpad though. No, you didn't miss anything, I promise.
As always big thanks to @llirawolf , who listens to me ramble

Text Messages: Gianpiero Lambiase & Max Verstappen
GP: Heard about the post-race press. Are you and Belle okay?
Max: I’m fine. Belle’s shaken. Tired. But she’s okay. (ish.)
GP: “Okay-ish” isn’t exactly reassuring, mate.
Max: She’s stronger than she thinks. But it hit her hard. Even after everything… she still hoped they’d see her.
GP: That’s the cruel part. Hope.
Max: Yeah.
GP: Is she at home? You with her?
Max: I am.
Max: Doesn’t feel like enough.
GP: It’s enough. You’re there. You see her. That’s already more than most have ever done.
Max: She deserves better than this.
GP: She’s got it now. She’s got you.
GP: (and the cats.)
Max: True. Jimmy thinks he’s her bodyguard.
GP: Smart cat.
GP: Tell her we’re all thinking about her, yeah?
Max: I will. Thanks, GP. For checking in.
GP: Always. She’s part of the team now. Whether she likes it or not.

The breakfast table was too quiet.
A spread of croissants, jam, fresh fruit, and espresso cups sat untouched in the center of the table—untouched because no one could eat. Lorenzo’s revelation from the day before hung in the air like a thundercloud.
Isabelle had quit her job.
 Months ago.
Without telling a single one of them.
Charles still hadn’t wrapped his head around it. Isabelle had always loved her work. She breathed design. She stayed up late sketching, doodling floor plans on napkins, whispering ideas into voice memos when she thought no one was listening.
And then one day… she just walked away from it. From them.
Arthur sat with his head in his hands, looking half-murdered by guilt. Pascale was pale and tight-lipped, stirring her tea without drinking it.
“I don’t understand,” Pascale whispered. “How could she just… leave her job? She worked so hard for it.”
“She didn’t just leave,” Lorenzo said, pacing. “She ghosted the entire office. Packed her things in one night. Sent a polite goodbye email. Nothing else.”
“And no one noticed?” Arthur asked, stunned.
“No one bothered to notice,” Charles muttered.
Pascale looked toward Alexandra. “Did you know anything?”
Alexandra hesitated, then straightened a little. “She’s safe.”
That got everyone’s attention.
Charles’s head snapped toward her. “What?”
“I texted Emilie,” Alexandra said, calm but firm. “Isabelle’s best friend. She replied this morning. Said Isabelle is okay.”
A collective breath was held—and slowly released.
“Why didn’t you say that sooner?” Pascale asked, eyes wide.
“Because you were all too busy spiraling,” Alexandra said. “And because Emilie was clear: Isabelle doesn’t want to talk to any of you right now.”
Charles swallowed hard.
“She’s mad,” he said. “Of course she’s mad.”
“She’s not mad,” Alexandra said. “She’s hurt. She’s done. There’s a difference.”
Lorenzo closed his eyes. Arthur muttered something under his breath.
Then Alexandra added, almost absently, “She’s not alone. Emilie said her boyfriend likes taking care of her.”
A beat of stunned silence.
“Oh my god,” Arthur muttered. “She has a sugar daddy.”
Charlotte choked on her orange juice.
Pascale actually dropped her spoon.
“Arthur!” Alexandra hissed, scandalized.
Arthur looked wildly between them. “Think about it! Moved out. Quit her job. No one knows where she is. Isabelle’s always been quiet, not mysterious. What if she—”
“No. No,” Charles said quickly, shaking his head like that would erase the words from the room. “She wouldn’t. Isabelle is not like that.”
“People change when they feel abandoned,” Arthur muttered, clearly spiraling now. “This is how Netflix documentaries start.”
“I will kill whoever that man is,” Charles muttered, eyes narrowing like he was already imagining chasing someone through the Monaco harbor with a champagne bottle.
“I’m just saying,” Arthur hissed, “stranger things have happened! And let’s not pretend we’re not a family of unresolved emotional issues. We all have daddy issues!”
A beat of stunned silence.
Then Pascale, horror dawning on her face, said, “Excuse me?!”
Arthur looked up, mid-sip of juice. “What?”
Pascale blinked, stunned. “Since when?!”
Arthur just stared at her. “I mean, come on. Dad died when we were kids, Charles is out here trying to win his approval from the afterlife, I started karting again like I have something to prove, and Isabelle— Isabelle moved in with a mysterious man and quit her job because he "likes taking care of her!"
“Oh my God,” Pascale said faintly, sinking into her chair.
“Okay, this is going off the rails,” Alexandra groaned.
Lorenzo pinched the bridge of his nose. “Arthur, this is not about your unresolved need for paternal validation.”
Arthur shrugged helplessly. “I was just trying to explain that maybe Isabelle was looking for emotional stability and someone gave it to her. And maybe he also had a good skincare routine and a yacht. I don’t know.”
“She moved in with her boyfriend,” Lorenzo said sharply. “Not a sugar daddy. Her boyfriend. That’s what her old neighbor said. She left the firm. Left her apartment. But she didn’t run away. She just stopped waiting to be seen.”
Arthur groaned, slumping in his seat. “We didn’t even know she had a boyfriend.”
“Because she didn’t tell us,” Charles said bitterly. “Because she stopped expecting us to care.”
“Or because she knew you were going to freak out.” Charlotte murmured.
Charles raised an eyebrow. “What does that mean?”
Charlotte looked up, startled. “What?”
“You said that like you know something.”
Charlotte hesitated. “I don’t know anything.”
“Charlotte,” Lorenzo warned.
She shifted. “It’s just—she’s always been around racing. She used to hang around the paddock all the time. If she was seeing someone, I wouldn’t be shocked if it was someone from the grid.”
Silence.
Then Arthur: “Wait. You’re saying she could be dating someone we know?”
Charlotte winced. “I said maybe. Don’t start spiraling.”
“I’M ALREADY SPIRALING,” Charles announced.
Alexandra sighed, sipping her coffee. “And now we’ve entered the panic phase.”
Arthur leaned back, muttering, “If it’s Fernando I swear to God—”
Pascale clapped her hands together. “Enough.”
But Charles barely heard her.
Because if Belle was dating someone from the paddock…
Then there were nineteen men it could be, currently on the grid.
And not one of them had said a word.

Charles: SOMEONE TELL ME
 Who is dating my sister??
Charles: IS IT FERNANDO?? Are you her sugar daddy?? Just tell me. I need answers.
Fernando: Pardon?
Lewis: Oh we’re doing this.
George: Charles, breathe.
Oscar: You’re spiraling. Please stop.
Pierre: Wait WHAT??
Yuki: I feel like I’ve walked into the last five minutes of a telenovela
Fernando: Charles. I’m flattered. But no.
Charles: OK FINE. MAX. Charles:  IS SHE DATING JOS?!
Logan: …bro
George: I need to leave this chat forever
Lando: oh my god
Max: What. Did. You. Just. Say.
Charles: I don’t know, okay?? Everyone’s being weird. She’s gone, she moved, she quit her job, no one’s telling me anything and YOU’RE ALL BEING WEIRD.
Max: Don’t you ever say something like that again.
Max: Not as a joke. Not out of panic. Not ever.
Max: Belle is your sister, Charles. She deserved your attention, your support, your respect—and she didn’t get any of it. Max: And now you want to cover up your guilt by making a disgusting joke like that?
George: Whoa.
Charles: It’s not a joke! She smiled at him during Monaco!
Max: You forgot her birthday. You forgot her entire life outside of your world. And now you’re so desperate to catch up you’re throwing shit against the wall like it doesn’t have consequences?
Oscar: He’s right. That was low, man.
Lando: Way out of line.
Max:  You’re panicking and flinging names around like this is a soap opera, and you’re forgetting that this isn’t about you.
Carlos: He’s right.
Max: Belle isn’t your property. She doesn’t owe you updates of her life. And the fact that your first instinct is to accuse my father of something that insane? That tells me everything I need to know about where your priorities are.
Max: You’re not trying to protect her. You’re trying to control the fallout of your own guilt.
Alex: Oof.
Oscar: He’s not wrong.
Lando: I mean, he’s definitely not wrong.
Daniel: That was… surgical.
Max: You forgot her birthday. You didn’t realise she moved or that she quit her job. And now that it’s all blowing up in your face, you’re treating your sister like a scandal to manage instead of a woman who deserves better than you’ve given her for years.
Charles: Max…
Max Verstappen: Don’t. You had every chance to show up. And you didn’t.
Oscar: …Well. That was the cleanest emotional takedown I’ve ever witnessed.
Pierre: I’m afraid to even type right now.
Alex: Respectfully, that needed to be said.
Lewis: Sometimes silence is the most respectful response. And sometimes it’s watching Max drop a nuke and sipping your tea.
Charles: … I’m sorry.
Max: Don’t say sorry to me. Say it to her.
Daniel: And maybe do it without accusing her of having a sugar daddy next time.
Fernando: Sincerely never thought I’d be defending Jos Verstappen’s honor in a group chat. And yet. Here we are.
Pierre: Did we all just witness character development in real time?
Oscar:  No, we witnessed Max finally snap.
Carlos: Honestly? Fair.
Max: Now if you’ll excuse me, my wife wants to go see her horse.

Oscar: (sends screenshots) Are we gonna talk about that??
Lando: I don’t think I’ll ever emotionally recover.
George: That wasn’t an argument. That was Max opening a precision-cut emotional autopsy on Charles.
Daniel: Surgical strike. Zero survivors.
Carlos: I think I stopped breathing somewhere between “not your property” and “scandal to manage.”
Alex: And he still managed to slip in “my wife” at the end like it was casual.
Lewis: Subtle as a sledgehammer. Iconic.
Sebastian: Imagine standing that close to the truth and just completely going off the deep end. JOS VERSTAPPEN?!?!
David: Charles is lucky we’re not recording this for Drive to Survive. This would be season finale material.
Fernando: Still recovering from the fact that I had to defend Jos Verstappen’s honor today. Truly humbling times.
Mark: Also Max casually confirming "wife" like we didn’t hear that bomb drop.
Lando: The whole chat: staring at “my wife” like: [INSERT SHOCKED PIKACHU MEME]
Logan: Also Max: anyway gtg horseback riding with Belle bye
George: Meanwhile we’re left here emotionally blinking like stunned goldfish.
Zhou: Respectfully? That was the hottest thing I’ve ever seen in a group chat.
Logan: He read Charles’ whole life like it was a menu.
Esteban: No crumbs left. Truly an artist.
Lewis: I hope Belle gives Max a damn medal.
Carlos: It’s what he deserves.
Lando Norris: At this point Max could straight up declare war on Monaco and all of us would follow him.
Nico H.: Only if Belle asks nicely though.
Fernando: Honestly, after that? She deserves her own Grand Prix.
Sebastian: Belle Verstappen GP. Street circuit. Emotional trauma bonus points.
David: Winner gets emotional literacy and a free hug.
Lando: Charles gets last place. Obv.
Oscar: Someone check on Charles, though. Like... at a distance. With caution.
George: Give him a juice box and a reflective corner.
Lewis: He needs to sit with this one. You’re up, Seb.
Sebastian: I hate you.
Carlos: And next time?  Maybe start by actually listening to Belle. and not accuse her of having a sugar daddy.
Oscar: Can we also talk about how Charles accused Fernando of being Belle’s sugar daddy?!?
Lando: No because I actually SCREAMED when I read it Out loud. In a public place.
George: Charles really said “if the unhinged shoe fits…”
Lewis: Fernando being asked if he’s the sugar daddy of a 25-year-old woman live in a chat is peak 2024.
Daniel: The best part is Fernando didn’t even deny it immediately. He said “pardon” like a man trying to calculate if this was a compliment or an insult.
Fernando: I was genuinely weighing my options.
Logan: He 100% thought about it for a second Did the math in his head Age difference analysis
Carlos: He pulled out a mental calculator before answering.
Alex: Plot twist: he was flattered.
Fernando: I am flattered.
Logan: ARE YOU NOT TOO OLD FOR THIS SIR
Fernando: Age is just a number. Experience is a blessing.
David: Shut up you're scaring the children
Daniel: I'm crying. This man is two bad decisions away from opening a luxury wine bar in Marbella.
Zhou: Would 100% attend Fernando’s shady rich sugar daddy wine parties tbh.
George: You know somewhere there's an alternate universe where Fernando is soft-launching Belle on Instagram with a blurry wine glass and a cryptic caption.
Sebastian: Don’t manifest that energy.
Lewis: The timeline barely survived Charles forgetting her birthday We are NOT surviving "Fernando Alonso soft launches Belle Verstappen."
Oscar: Good morning to everyone except Charles for inventing this nightmare.
Carlos: He should be banned from texting before noon.
Daniel: Imagine Belle reading that conversation The secondhand embarrassment would kill her instantly
Lando: Max would bury Charles under the Red Bull Energy Station if Belle found out
Fernando: That’s why I stayed calm. For everyone’s safety.
David: You’re a better man than I am.
George: Let’s be honest Max’s entire speech wasn’t just a takedown It was a warning.
Lewis: And Charles still doesn’t realize how close he was to emotional decapitation.
Daniel: Fernando being accidentally involved will forever be my Roman Empire
Lando: Same. Sugar Daddy Alonso 2024 Never Forget.
Kimi: I don’t care.
Fernando: Good. One sane man among us.
Mark: Honestly Kimi deserves a medal for surviving this chat with brain cells intact.
Lando: Meanwhile I’m Googling “how to recover from emotional whiplash" and "can you sue your friend for public embarrassment.”
Oscar: Suing Charles for pain and suffering. Class action.
Lewis: Count me in.
Daniel: Put me down for emotional damages and lost productivity.
Carlos: And mental anguish from hearing "Jos" and "sugar daddy" in the same sentence.
George Russell: I’m still trying to bleach my brain from that.
Sebastian Vettel: The worst part is… We know it’s only going to get worse.
Valtteri: Spain is going to be the emotional equivalent of a demolition derby and I'm here for it…
Oscar: Prayers up for Charles. He’s about to get hit with the reality sledgehammer.

The air smelled like sun-warmed hay and old wood and something softer — something Max couldn’t name but recognized instantly as peace.
The stables weren’t far from the city — a quiet, tucked-away stretch of land up in the hills — but it might as well have been another world compared to the chaos vibrating through the paddock, the media, the group chats.
Belle was already a few steps ahead of him, moving with easy, instinctive confidence down the center aisle. Her hair was pulled back in a loose braid, and she wore one of his oversized hoodies over her jeans, the sleeves pushed up to her elbows. Even in battered sneakers, even in dusty sunlight, she looked luminous.
This, Max thought, is who she really is.
Not the invisible sister standing silently in the Ferrari garage.
 Not the afterthought.
 Not the forgotten one.
Here, among the horses and the golden dust motes, Belle was someone else entirely. Someone free.
He watched as she reached Fleur’s stall — the mare with the soft eyes and white coat — and the change in her was immediate. Belle’s whole body softened. Her voice dropped into something low and sweet, barely a whisper, as she murmured to the horse in French, offering a gentle hand.
Fleur pressed her nose into Belle’s palm like she had been waiting for her all day.
Max stayed back, leaning against a beam, just… watching.
Belle ran her fingers through the mare’s mane, smiling quietly when Fleur nosed into her ribs for a treat. She laughed, soft and breathless, pulling a carrot from her pocket like she’d always known it would be needed.
Max felt something hot coil under his ribs.
Not anger. Not yet.
Something heavier.
Because standing there, watching her, Max didn’t understand — and probably never would — how the people who were supposed to love her first and fiercest could have ever made her feel like this side of her wasn’t worth seeing.
How did you miss this?
 How did you miss her?
How could you look at Belle — at her patience, her stubbornness, her gentleness — and think she was someone it was okay to forget?
Max didn't know how Charles or Pascale or Arthur or even Lorenzo could live with themselves.
She had been right there, waving from the garage, smiling through being overlooked, standing quietly beside them her whole life — and they’d blinked, and she was gone.
He didn’t know if they'd ever get her back, not in the way they thought they were entitled to.
And maybe they didn’t deserve to.
Max shoved his hands into his pockets, feeling the steady beat of his own pulse against his knuckles. He wasn’t angry on his own behalf — he was angry for her. For every memory she had where she learned she needed to be small to survive. For every year she thought invisibility was safer than asking for more.
But here — here, she didn’t shrink herself.
Here, she was all soft light and warm hands and quiet magic.
He watched as Belle rested her forehead against Fleur’s, closing her eyes. Whispering something Max couldn’t hear.
He didn’t move.
He would wait forever if it meant she never had to be small again.
When she finally turned toward him, cheeks flushed, hair tangled in the breeze, Max just smiled — slow and sure — and opened his arms without a word.
Belle crossed the space between them like it was the most natural thing in the world.
And when she folded herself against his chest, Max pressed his mouth to the top of her head and thought, fiercely, I will never let you feel invisible again.
Not here. Not with him.
Never.

Belle sat curled into the armchair, hands knotted in the hem of her sweater. Her phone buzzed on the low table beside her — again — and she flinched without meaning to.
She didn’t pick it up. She hadn’t read any of them. Not a single message.
Across from her, Simone sat, notebook closed, pen resting untouched on the armrest. She didn’t need notes yet. She was just watching — waiting for Belle to breathe first.
"You don’t have to," Simone said finally, nodding toward the phone. "We can leave it buzzing all session if you want. This is your hour."
Belle looked down at her hands.
"I don’t know what they want," she said, voice thin. "I don’t know if I want to know."
"That's a choice," Simone said simply. "It’s your choice."
Belle twisted the hem tighter. "They keep calling. Texting. DMing. It’s like... once Charles realized, they all remembered I exist."
"That realization isn’t yours to carry," Simone said. "You didn’t make yourself invisible. They chose not to see you."
“You haven’t answered,” Simone asked, her voice even…non-judgemental.
Belle shook her head, pressing the rim of the mug tighter against her palms.
“I don’t know if I want to,” Belle whispered.
Simone leaned forward slightly. “You’re allowed to make that choice, Belle. Access to your life — your heart — isn’t something anyone is automatically entitled to. Not even family.”
Belle blinked hard.
“It feels… wrong,” she admitted. “Like I’m being cruel. But also like… maybe it’s finally protecting myself.”
Simone nodded. “Both can be true.”
They sat with that for a moment, letting the air between them settle.
"I feel like if I open one message, I’ll lose the ground I gained," she whispered. "Like they'll pull me back in before I even realize it."
Simone nodded slowly. "That fear is real. It’s valid. But remember — reading a message doesn’t obligate you to answer. They don’t get to set the terms anymore. You do."
Belle sat with that for a long moment, staring at the phone like it was a bomb she didn't know how to disarm.
"You can read what they have to say," Simone continued gently, "and then decide how much access you want to give them. How much of yourself you want to offer back. Or none at all.  But the decision has to come from a place of power — not guilt."
Belle swallowed hard, something inside her cracking open.
"I don’t want to live my life shrinking," she said, so quietly it barely made it into the room.
"You don’t have to," Simone said simply. "You’re allowed to grow bigger than the spaces they built for you."
Belle wiped under her eyes, feeling the tears spill anyway.
"I’m pregnant," she said, almost impulsively, almost defensively — like the words had been trying to claw their way out of her for days.
Simone didn’t react, didn’t widen her eyes or gasp or rush forward.
She just smiled, slow and warm.
"Congratulations," Simone said.
Belle let out a shaky laugh, covering her face for a moment.
"I haven’t told most people yet," she admitted. "It’s... still just mine and Max’s, mostly. But I—"
She broke off, chest tight.
"I don’t want my baby to feel the way I felt," Belle whispered. "Invisible. Like they have to earn love. Like being quiet or not causing trouble makes them easier to keep around."
Simone nodded slowly. "You don’t want them to feel like they have to disappear to be safe."
Belle’s throat closed. That was it. That was everything.
"I want them to know," Belle said, tears slipping freely now. "Every second. That they matter. That they are wanted."
"You can give them that," Simone said gently. "Because you know what it feels like to need it."
Belle hugged her knees tighter to her chest, breathing in slow, ragged pulls.
"I don't know if I can be enough," she whispered.
"You already are," Simone said simply. "You're enough because you see them. The way you should have been seen."
Belle wiped her face roughly with her sleeve, heart pounding painfully against her ribs.
Simone leaned in just a little, voice steady.
"You get to break the cycle," she said. "Not by being perfect. Not by fixing everything. But by loving without conditions."
Belle stared down at her belly, still barely showing under the oversized sweater. A secret, soft and growing.
Not alone anymore.
Not invisible.
Not shrinking to fit someone else's version of worth.
She exhaled shakily.
"I think," Belle said slowly, "I’ll read the messages. Because it’s my choice now."
Simone smiled. "Exactly."
Belle sat back in the chair, letting the silence settle.
For the first time in a long time, it didn’t feel heavy.
It felt like freedom.
***
The cats were asleep — a warm, purring pile on the foot of the bed — and the only sound in the room was the hum of the city beyond the windows and the soft rustle of Max shifting beside her.
Belle sat curled up in the corner of the bed, Max’s hoodie swallowing her whole, the phone clutched in both hands.
She hadn’t wanted to look. Not at the missed calls. Not at the voicemails. Not at the dozens of unread messages blinking like warning lights across every app she had.
But now… Now she read them.
One by one.
Apologies. Explanations. Pleading.
Arthur. Lorenzo. Charles.
And Maman. Always Maman.
Maman:Ma chérie… I didn’t realise. I thought I messaged you, but I sent it to Charles by mistake. That’s not an excuse. You deserved more. Always. Please let me come see you. I miss you.
Belle stared at the words, blinking back the slow, stunned weight building behind her eyes.
Because if her mother had texted Charles that morning — if she had thought about Belle enough to even try — then Charles would have known.
He would have remembered.
There wouldn’t have been blank stares in the Ferrari garage.
There wouldn’t have been celebrations swirling around her while she stood still, invisible.
There would have been a smile.
 A hug.
 A word.
Anything.
But there hadn’t been.
Because her mother hadn’t texted.
Not her.
And not Charles.
She hadn’t thought about her at all.
Belle felt the first tear slip free before she could stop it. Then another. And another.
Her hands shook as she lowered the phone to her lap.
She pressed her knuckles against her mouth, willing herself to breathe, to hold it together — but the ache was too deep. Too old. It cracked open the quiet places she thought she had stitched shut months ago.
The mattress dipped beside her, and Max’s arms were around her before she could say a word.
No questions. No demands. Just solid, unwavering Max, pulling her into his chest, pressing his chin to the crown of her head, wrapping her up like he could protect her from everything the world had failed to.
Belle buried her face in his hoodie and cried — deep, broken, shuddering sobs that shook her ribs and soaked the cotton between them.
Max held her through all of it. Rocked her gently like she was something precious. Whispered soft, fierce things into her hair — I’ve got you. I’m not going anywhere. I love you.
When the tears finally slowed — when Belle could breathe without gasping — she shifted just enough to look up at him.
“She lied to me,” Belle whispered, voice barely above a breath.
Max tensed, not pulling away, but going still — like a storm gathering quietly over open water.
Belle twisted the fabric of his hoodie between her fingers, needing something to hold onto. “My mother. In her messages. She said… she said she thought she had texted me on my birthday. That she checked and realized she sent it to Charles instead.”
Max didn’t say anything.
 Not yet.
He just waited.
“But if she had really texted Charles,” Belle said, blinking hard, “then he would have remembered. Wouldn’t he?”
Max’s jaw tightened against her forehead.
“He would have realized when he saw me. He would have known it was my day.”
Belle swallowed thickly. “He would have said something. Anything.”
She felt Max’s hand, slow and careful, run up her spine — like he was grounding himself as much as her.
“They didn’t forget by accident, Max,” she whispered, the crack in her voice slicing the room in half. “They just… didn’t think about me at all. And now she’s lying to make herself feel better. Or maybe to make me not be angry anymore.”
There was a long, vibrating pause.
When Max finally spoke, his voice was low. Dangerous.
“She lied to you." Not angry for himself. Angry for her.
“She lied to your face to protect her own feelings,” he said, tightening his grip around her protectively. “And she didn’t even think about what it would do to you.”
Belle didn’t trust herself to speak.
“She didn’t check,” Max said, every word precise and sharp. “She didn’t text you. She forgot you. And now she wants you to comfort her guilt so she doesn’t have to sit with the truth.”
Belle closed her eyes, tucking herself deeper into his chest.
Max’s voice dropped even lower. Colder. Deadlier.
“They don’t deserve to be the ones to tell you how much you matter, Belle,” he said. “Not when they couldn’t even see you standing right in front of them.”
Belle felt herself break apart a little more — not because of the anger in his voice, but because of the fierce, unyielding love underneath it.
Max pulled back just enough to tip her chin up, forcing her to meet his eyes.
“They can lie to themselves all they want,” he said, voice rough. “But you’re not invisible anymore. You never were. You are the most extraordinary thing I’ve ever seen.”
Belle tried to smile but it broke halfway through, another tear slipping free.
Max kissed her — not rushed, not desperate — but slow and sure and reverent.
“I see you,” he murmured against her mouth. “I will always see you.”
Belle clutched his hoodie tighter, feeling the words stitch into the broken places inside her chest.
And when she whispered, “Thank you,” it was the kind of thank you that carried a lifetime of hope she hadn’t known how to say before now.
Max brushed her forehead with his lips, arms still wrapped firmly around her.
***
The apartment was dark except for the soft glow of the city outside the windows, and the faint golden light spilling from the kitchen where Max was making tea.
The cats were already asleep, draped dramatically across the couch like tiny emperors, and Belle sat curled up at the dining table, phone in hand.
Her thumb hovered over the Instagram app for a long time.
She hadn’t posted anything in weeks. Maybe longer. Not since before everything cracked open — before her birthday…
It felt strange, almost dangerous, to think about letting the world see even a piece of her life again. To stop living like she needed to apologize for taking up space.
But she was tired.
She was tired of pretending her life was something to be ashamed of.
She was tired of being invisible.
Of hiding her joy like it was a crime.
She tapped into her camera roll.
The photo was simple. Max had taken it — taken earlier that afternoon, in the warm haze of the stables. Fleur was grazing and Belle’s arm was tucked around her neck, leaning against the warm white fur.
It wasn’t a professional shot.
 It wasn’t curated.
 It was real.
And for once, Belle didn’t care about anything else.
She clicked ‘post’ before she could talk herself out of it.
Caption:Some things were always meant to find their way back to you.
She stared at it for a moment, heart hammering — not with fear, but with something quieter. Something steadier.
Not everyone would understand.
Most wouldn’t even know what it meant.
But the people who mattered — the ones who knew her, who loved her — they would understand exactly what she was saying.
Max’s voice floated from the kitchen, casual and warm. “You want mint or chamomile?”
Belle smiled softly to herself.
“Mint,” she called back, slipping her phone onto the table, feeling lighter than she had in months.
No more hiding.
No more shrinking.
Her life was hers now.
And she was finally — finally — ready to live it.

@/charles_leclerc: Isabelle. Please answer your phone.
@/arthur_leclerc: PLEASE RESPOND.
@/randomfan72: THE WAY SHE JUST DROPPED THIS WITHOUT CONTEXT???
@/f1updates: Isabelle disappearing for a week and then coming back with a horse is the most iconic thing I’ve seen in a while.
@/f1fanpage: Okay, but WHO GAVE HER A HORSE???
@/monacoroyalty: Isabelle casually revealing that she has a whole horse like it’s a new handbag is sending me.
@/gridgossip: He/she’s gorgeous! What’s their name? ↪ @/isabelleleclerc: Fleur ❤️ She’s a 7 year old Selle Francais mare.
@/emilie_abadie: God, Belle, she looks just like Blanche…
↪ @/isabelleleclerc: Like Mother, like Daughter ❤️
@/coralie.g: She looks like your childhood horse…
↪ @/isabelleleclerc: Because she’s her last foal 😭
@/horselover99: Omg did you always plan to start riding again? 🥹 ↪ @/isabelleleclerc: I never stopped wanting to. Just couldn’t afford to for a long time.
@/victorialaps: This is so random but… how did you even find her? ↪ @/isabelleleclerc: I didn’t. She was a gift. Best surprise ever.
@/f1updates: WAIT WAIT WAIT.
@/f1theories: GIFT?? FROM WHO??

The tea had just finished steeping when Max’s phone buzzed once. Then again. And again.
He frowned, setting down the mugs. It wasn’t like his phone to light up at midnight unless something dramatic had happened — and judging by the flood of notifications, the world had just decided to catch fire.
But when he flipped it over, his chest tightened in a very different way.
It wasn’t chaos. It wasn’t panic.
It was Belle.
Her name. Her Instagram. A new post.
Max opened it instantly, barely breathing.
The photo was simple, quiet — Fleur leaning into Belle’s hand, golden light painting everything soft around them.
But it wasn’t the picture that hit him hardest.
It was the caption.
some things are always meant to come back to you.
Max stared at the screen, heart thudding slow and heavy in his chest.
It wasn’t loud. It wasn’t flashy. It wasn’t a declaration.
It was a quiet, stubborn reclaiming of everything Belle had once been taught to hide — her dreams, her peace, her self.
And she hadn’t asked permission.
She hadn't needed anyone’s blessing.
She had simply... posted it.
Without apology.
 Without explanation.
Max set the phone down, grabbed both mugs carefully, and crossed the living room to where Belle sat curled up at the table, her knees tucked under her, the soft edges of exhaustion lingering around her eyes.
She looked up when she heard him, tentative, like part of her was still braced for criticism she didn’t deserve.
Max didn’t say a word.
He placed the tea down. Then he crouched in front of her, sliding his hands over her knees, resting his forehead gently against hers.
No words. Just this.
Just I'm proud of you.
Belle let out a soft, shaky breath, her hand sliding into his hair, holding onto him like he was the only thing keeping her tethered — because sometimes, he was.
“You saw it?” she whispered.
Max smiled against her skin.
“I saw everything,” he murmured. “And I see you, liefde. Always.”
Belle’s breath hitched.
She closed her eyes and let herself believe it — let herself soak in the truth of it without second-guessing.
She wasn’t invisible here.
She was home.
And Max — Max was exactly where he had always promised he would be:
Right here. Always. With her.

Leclerc Family Group Chat
(Members: Arthur, Isabelle, Charles, Lorenzo and Pascale)
Arthur: Shared Isabelle’s Instagram post
Arthur: …So. Uh.
Arthur: When were you guys planning on telling me that Isabelle suddenly has a HORSE?
Charles: SHE HAS A WHAT.
Lorenzo: Excuse me??
Arthur: A horse, Lorenzo. A living, breathing, four-legged animal. You know. Like the one that was sold when she was a teenager.
Charles: No. No way. That’s not possible.
Arthur: Look at the photo. LOOK AT IT.
Charles: It looks exactly like Blanche.
Lorenzo: That’s not possible.
Arthur: AND YET.
Lorenzo: Okay. Okay. Let’s just—think about this logically.
Arthur: Sure. Logically. Isabelle now has a horse that looks IDENTICAL to the one that was sold to pay for Charles' karting?!?!
Arthur: LOGICALLY, how does that make any sense?!
Charles: Who gave her a horse?
Arthur: WHO KNEW SHE STILL WANTED ONE???
Lorenzo: …Clearly, not us.
Pascale: …We should have known.
Arthur: …Maman?
Pascale: We took away something she loved.
Pascale: And then we never gave it back.
Charles: We didn’t have the money.
Pascale: No. But when we did have the money, we put it into restarting Arthur’s karting career.
Arthur: …
Charles: …
Lorenzo: Merde.
Pascale: And we never even considered doing the same for Isabelle.
Pascale: Not once.
Arthur: I—Maman, I didn’t even think—
Pascale: No. None of us did.
Pascale: She cried for weeks when we sold Blanche. And then, one day, she just stopped talking about it.
Pascale: I thought she had let it go.
Charles: She didn’t let it go. She just realized no one was listening.
Pascale: And I, her own mother, let her believe that if it wasn’t about racing, it wasn’t important.
Lorenzo: We all did.
Arthur: We failed her.
Pascale: And yet she still loved us enough to stay.
Pascale: Even when we didn’t see her.
Charles: We need to fix this.
Arthur: Step one: find out who gave her the horse.
Pascale: Step one: apologize.
Arthur: Step two: figure out how we didn’t even KNOW she was riding again.
Lorenzo: When would she have had the time?
Pascale: She found a way. Because we didn’t give her one.
Pascale: Do you know what hurts the most?
Charles: What?
Pascale: That I don’t even know what kind of life she’s been living.
Pascale: What she loves. Where she goes. Who she spends time with.
Pascale: She grew up right in front of me, and I don’t know her at all.
Arthur: …How do we fix this?
Pascale: I don’t know if we can. ****
Meanwhile on Twitter:
@/F1TeaSpillerIsabelle Leclerc just casually dropped a photo of a whole horse on Instagram, and her brothers had NO IDEA she was even riding again. The family drama is writing itself.
↳ @/LandoSimp44: How do you not notice your sister getting into an expensive, time-consuming hobby???
↳ @/FerrariF1Stan: Maybe because they’ve never paid attention to her interests in the first place…??
↳ @/LeclercFanGirl16: Charles and Arthur are spiraling in the comments, Lorenzo is confused, and Isabelle is just out here ignoring them all. QUEEN.
@/F1GossipGirlHold on. Isabelle didn’t just get any horse. If I’m reading this correctly, this foal is from her childhood horse. The one her family SOLD.
↳ @/MaxForPresident33: Oh, so she’s still THAT angry. And honestly? Good for her.
↳ @/RedBullRacingUpdates: The way she’s been quiet for two whole weeks and then dropped a horse like a bombshell?? I need to know who gave it to her.
↳ @/FerrariDramaAccount: Isabelle’s silence has been screaming for a week straight, and now this. The Leclerc brothers are doomed.
@/F1MemeLordLeclerc brothers: "We totally care about our sister." Also the Leclerc brothers: Completely unaware she’s been riding again and now owns a horse.
↳ @/CharlesFanClub: Yeah, Isabelle is 100% still mad. She really said, "You forgot my birthday? Watch this."
↳ @/MonacoMess: Isabelle is SO passive-aggressive and I respect it.
↳ @/HorseGirlFC: I just KNOW she’s been waiting for the perfect moment to drop this. Iconic behavior.
@/F1InsiderTalk: No, but real talk—if her brothers had no idea she was even riding again, that means they haven’t been paying attention to her at all. That’s rough.
↳ @/TifosiQueen: She had a birthday and they forgot. Now she has a whole damn horse and they didn’t even know she still liked horses.
↳ @/MonacoGossip: Isabelle could disappear to another continent, and I swear they wouldn’t notice until someone tagged them in an Instagram post.
↳ @/ArthurFan27: I love Arthur, but the way none of them know anything about her is actually kind of sad.
@/ChaosModeF1I just KNOW Isabelle had this horse for a bit before dropping it like a bomb on Instagram. The drama, the suspense, the Leclerc brothers losing their minds in real time.
↳ @/MaxVerstappenDefenseSquad: The fact that she didn’t post anything about her birthday but came back with a horse tells me everything I need to know.
↳@/FerrariWoes: I feel like this was the final straw moment.
@/RedBullTroll33Okay, but WHO gave her the horse? Because that’s a serious gift.
↳@/ F1ConspiracyClub: If it was Charles or Arthur, they wouldn’t be so confused in the comments. If it was Lorenzo, he wouldn’t be freaking out too.
↳ @/FerrariPain42: Soooo… secret boyfriend? 👀
↳@/F1ShippersAnonymous: If this turns out to be a soft launch, I WILL lose my mind.
@/MonacoRoyaltyI don’t know who gave Isabelle Leclerc a horse, but I do know that person knows her better than her own family does.
↳ @/FerrariNation: …Damn. That’s actually heartbreaking when you put it like that.
↳ @/IsabelleLeclercDefenseSquad: She really just had to go out and find people who see her, huh?
↳ @/WhoGaveHerAHorse33: Someone get me the details. NOW.
@/F1ChaosModeThe funniest part of this is that Isabelle still hasn’t responded to any of her brothers. Just posted her horse and dipped.
↳ @/LeclercFamilyUpdates: The sheer level of pettiness. I love her.
↳ @/TifosiHeartbreak: Isabelle really said you forgot me, so now I’m forgetting you.
↳ @/FerrariShambles: I want a documentary about the exact moment Charles realized they were bad brothers.
@/F1SpicyTeaI know we’re all laughing, but this actually makes me so sad for Isabelle. Imagine your whole family forgetting your birthday, ignoring you for years, and then being SHOCKED when you move on with your life.
↳ @/MonacoMess: They didn’t even know she still loved horses.
↳ @/FerrariF1Pain: The worst part? She didn’t even make a dramatic callout post about her birthday. She just let their silence speak for itself.
↳ @/TifosiAngstClub: She is the human embodiment of "I no longer expect anything from you."
@/F1ConspiracyClubIsabelle didn’t just buy this horse. Somebody gave it to her, according to her. Whoever they are, they know her better than her entire family.
↳ @/SoftLaunchDetective: If this is a secret boyfriend reveal, it’s the most dramatic and poetic one I’ve ever seen.
@/MonacoRoyalty: Isabelle Leclerc is the queen of quiet revenge. No loud callouts. No arguments. Just a perfectly timed Instagram post that says everything.
↳ @/FerrariTears: And the best part? Her brothers are LOSING IT in the comments.
↳ @/ArthurLeclercDefenseSquad: Arthur is panicking like she’s about to disappear forever.
↳ @/CharlesHasNoClue: Charles sounds like he’s five seconds away from personally investigating who gave her the horse.
↳ @/TifosiDetectives: The thing is, they should know. But they don’t.
@/TifosiMess: So let me get this straight:
Isabelle’s family forgot her birthday.
She disappeared for two weeks.
Charles finally remembers that he has a sister.
Isabelle comes back with a horse.
Drops it on Instagram like it’s a casual Tuesday.
Her brothers have no idea where it came from.
I am obsessed with this timeline.
↳ @/FerrariAngst: I’m still stuck on "they didn’t even know she was riding again."
↳ @/CharlesNeedsHelp: The way they suddenly care now that it’s public.
@/F1SoftLaunchDetective: I’ll say it. Whoever gave her the horse loves her more than her own family does.
↳ @/FerrariHeartbreak: And that’s why the Leclerc brothers are panicking.
↳ @/RedBullInsider: Just waiting for the next phase of this drama. I know something bigger is coming.
↳ @/TifosiConspiracies: I have a gut feeling that when we find out who got her the horse, the internet will EXPLODE.

Text Messages: Arthur Leclerc & Belle Verstappen
Arthur: I don’t really know how to start this.
Arthur: But I guess the first thing I need to say is—I’m sorry.
Arthur: I keep thinking about when I had to stop karting. How devastated I was. How unfair it felt.
Arthur: You know, when I was younger, I used to think we were the same.
Arthur: We both lost something for Charles. We both had to step aside.
Arthur: But the difference is, I got my second chance.
Arthur: And you never did.
Arthur: They gave me my dream back. But nobody ever thought to give you yours.
Arthur: And the worst part is, I never even thought about it.
Arthur: I was so focused on getting my own dream back that I never stopped to ask if you wanted yours.
Arthur: Or if you were even okay.
Arthur: I remember when they sold Blanche. You locked yourself in your room for days. Maman kept saying you’d get over it.
Arthur: But you never did, did you?
Arthur: I should have noticed. I should have asked.
Arthur: I should have known that you never stopped loving it. That you never moved on just because we assumed you did.
Arthur: But we never gave you a choice, did we?
Arthur: You were always the one who had to sacrifice something. You were always the one who had to step aside.
Arthur: And I never even thought about how much that must have hurt.
Arthur: I let myself believe you were fine because it was easier than realizing we left you behind.
Arthur: When I saw that horse, I thought my heart stopped. She looks just like Blanche.
Arthur: I had to read your post three times before it sank in. That you never let go of that part of yourself. That you found your way back.
Arthur: And none of us even knew.
Arthur: I don’t know where to start making this right. I don’t know if I even can.
Arthur: I don’t expect you to answer me. I don’t even know if I deserve an answer.
Arthur: But Isabelle, if there is even the smallest chance that I can fix this, that I can fix us—
Arthur: Tell me how. And I’ll do it.
Arthur: No hesitation. No questions asked.
Arthur: Je suis désolé, petite sœur.
Arthur: And I miss you.

@/coraliegaudin: I don’t think people really get how much Isabelle Leclerc sacrificed. I knew her at university, and she was one of the smartest, hardest-working people I’ve ever met. But she never seemed happy. A thread.
↳ @/coraliegaudin: She wasn’t the type to talk about herself. She showed up, did the work, and left. No parties, no celebrations, nothing. Just school and her jobs.
↳@/coraliegaudin: And she always had jobs. She tutored, did internships, and worked at a stable. Yes, a stable.
↳@/coraliegaudin: I remember seeing her come to class still smelling like hay, her hands rough from work. And the thing is? That was the only time she ever looked truly alive.
↳@/coraliegaudin: She never told people why, but I found out later—her family sold her childhood horse when she was a teenager.
↳@/coraliegaudin: She didn’t ask them to fix it. She didn’t ask for help. She just worked. Worked herself into the ground to afford even a few hours of riding time.
↳@/coraliegaudin: I remember once, someone asked her why she never celebrated her grades. She just said, “It’s not that important.”
↳@/coraliegaudin: Not that important. Graduating with top honors. Getting a degree. None of it mattered to her. Because all she ever wanted was something she lost years ago.
↳@/coraliegaudin: And now, she has a horse again. Not just any horse—the foal of the one she lost.
↳@/coraliegaudin: I don’t think people understand how huge that is. This isn’t just a gift. It’s her entire dream given back to her.
↳@/coraliegaudin: She spent years giving up things for other people. But someone finally gave something back to her.
↳@/coraliegaudin: If anyone deserves that kind of love and thoughtfulness, it’s Isabelle Leclerc. I hope she’s finally as happy as she always deserved to be.

Lorenzo: I know you probably don’t want to hear from me.
Lorenzo: But I need to say this.
Lorenzo: I’m sorry.
Lorenzo: I don’t know how we forgot your birthday. I don’t know how we’ve made you feel so invisible.
Lorenzo: But we did. And I hate that it took this for me to realize how badly we’ve failed you.
Lorenzo: You’ve been riding again. I didn’t know. And that’s the problem, isn’t it?
Lorenzo: I should have. I should have asked. I should have paid more attention.
Lorenzo: But I didn’t.
Lorenzo: I should have asked what you were up to. I should have…I should have known that you were riding again. And that you moved. And that you quit your job. But I didn’t.
Lorenzo: I just assumed you were fine, even when you had every reason not to be.
Lorenzo: I don’t expect you to answer.
Lorenzo: I just need you to know—I see it now. I see you now.

Meanwhile on Twitter:
@/Clara_Marelli: So I wasn’t going to say anything, but seeing all the speculation about Isabelle Leclerc and her new horse? I need people to understand why this is such a big deal. Because I knew her back when she lost her first horse, and let me tell you—it broke her.
↳@/Clara_Marelli: Isabelle wasn’t just a horse girl, she was the horse girl. You know how some kids live and breathe a sport? That was her with riding. It wasn’t just a hobby, it was everything.
↳@/Clara_Marelli: She used to come to school with hay in her hair because she’d wake up early to ride before class. She had riding gloves permanently stuffed in her pockets. She sketched horses in the margins of her notebooks. It was who she was.
↳@/Clara_Marelli: And then one day, she stopped.
↳@/Clara_Marelli: We were all confused. She never shut up about riding, and suddenly, she wouldn’t even mention it. If you asked about her horse, she’d just give this tight little smile and say, “She’s gone.” No explanation. No emotion. Just… gone.
↳@/Clara_Marelli: We only found out later that her family sold her horse to help fund Charles’ racing career. And look—I get it, racing is insanely expensive, and the Leclercs aren’t the first family to make sacrifices for motorsport. But this wasn’t just some hobby she could pick up again later.
↳@/Clara_Marelli: This was the thing that made her happiest, and it was ripped away from her.
↳@/Clara_Marelli: And what made it worse? She never complained. Not once. She just swallowed it, like she had already learned that what she wanted didn’t matter.
↳@/Clara_Marelli: After that, she changed. She got quieter. She stopped sketching horses. She stopped talking about anything she loved, really. It was like she decided—consciously or not—that if she didn’t care about things, they couldn’t be taken from her.
↳@/Clara_Marelli: And now, years later, she suddenly posts that she has a horse again. And her own brothers didn’t even know she was riding.
↳@/Clara_Marelli:  That tells me everything. It tells me that she never stopped missing it. That, at some point, she must have started riding again, but she kept it completely to herself. She didn’t tell her family. She didn’t trust them with it.
↳@/Clara_Marelli: And honestly? That makes me so, so sad. Because they should’ve been the first to know. They should’ve noticed that she was still hurting.
↳@/Clara_Marelli:  Instead, she had to find her way back to something she loved on her own.
↳@/Clara_Marelli: Whoever got her that horse—because let’s be real, this wasn’t a random purchase—they didn’t just give her a gift. They gave her back a part of herself. And that means more than her family probably even realizes.
@/F1Girl99: This is actually so heartbreaking. The way she just shut down after losing her horse?? And her family didn’t even realize??
@/LeclercNation: Nah, this makes the whole thing so much worse. Like, it’s one thing to forget her birthday, but not even knowing she still rides??
@/redbullgirly: “She didn’t trust them with it” is actually such a devastating sentence. Imagine having to hide the thing that makes you happiest because you know your family won’t care.
↳@/arthurfairy: The fact that she got a horse again but didn’t tell a single soul in her family tells me everything I need to know about how much that hurt her.
@/gridgossip: Everyone’s talking about how sad this is, but can we also talk about who got her that horse? Because that’s not a small gift. That’s a “someone knows exactly what you lost and wanted to give it back” kind of gift.
@/tifositilidie: Imagine being Charles or Arthur and realizing you never even thought about getting her back into riding.
↳@/ohmyf1: The fact that they restarted Arthur’s karting career but didn’t do the same for Isabelle and just assumed she got over it yeah, that’s rough.
@/chaoticquadrant: Isabelle’s silence about all of this is louder than anything she could’ve said.
@/pitlaneprincess: The fact that a random classmate knows more about Isabelle’s pain than her own family is WILD.
@/verstapwinning: I actually can’t get over the part where she just stopped talking about things she loved after they sold her horse. That’s not just sadness, that’s trauma.
@/softforcharles: I love Charles, but the way they all just assumed she was fine… like, did no one ever ask her if she wanted to ride again??
↳@/F1andChill: I’m just saying—if my sibling was secretly riding again and I found out from Instagram, I would simply pass away from shame.
@/IsabelleLeclercFan: The worst part? She didn’t even announce it like “Look what I got!” She just posted it, like it was a casual thing. That’s how you know it meant everything to her.
@/formula1tea: Okay, but do we think her family even realizes what this means yet?? Or are they still stuck on the “Wait, she rides?” stage?
@/offtrackchaos: Imagine Charles thinking she just outgrew the horse phase, only to find out she’s been hiding it from them for years.
@/arthurisstressed: Arthur’s probably having a full-blown crisis over this. You just know he’s the type to blame himself.
@/MaranelloMess: Isabelle’s whole family right now: “Wait… are we the villains?”
↳@/tifosiprincess: Yes. Yes, you are.
@/undercutf1: Like imagine realizing your sister got back into her childhood passion, something that was taken from her, and you had no idea. No one knew. That’s insane.
@/arthurwasfoundshaking: Arthur realizing he got his dream back but she never did… oh, he’s spiraling.
@/paddocksecrets: Her whole family just realized in real time that they don’t actually know her anymore.
@/charlesnation16: Charles must be freaking out because, in his head, Isabelle never even mentioned wanting to ride again. But the reality is she probably knew they wouldn’t care, so she never said anything.
@/leclercsdaughter: Imagine looking at your sister’s post and realizing someone else—not you, not your family—gave her back the thing you all took away.
@/mclarendreaming: The fact that there was ZERO lead-up. No hints. No casual mentions. Just BAM, full horse.
@/paddockwhispers: At this point, someone needs to check on the Leclerc group chat. I know they are LOSING IT.
@/padlockpundit: Someone said this isn’t just a gift, it’s an apology on behalf of the universe, and honestly?? Yeah.
@/blisteringbarnacles: I can’t tell what’s funnier—Twitter solving this mystery in real-time or the fact that Isabelle is probably watching all of this unfold while sipping tea.
@/hamiltonshalo: Someone find out how much horses cost because I need to understand just how deep this gift goes.
@/GridTea: Sorry, but how do you have a sibling making millions in F1, and you’re out here working three jobs and shoveling horse stalls just to afford riding lessons?? I need someone to make it make sense.
@/F1DramaFiles: So Charles was making Ferrari money and Isabelle was out here grinding like a broke college student?? He couldn’t spare a little “my sister should live like a human being” fund???
@/OverworkedLeclerc: She was out here studying, working multiple jobs, AND still showing up to races when she could. Meanwhile, her whole family forgot her birthday. I would simply cut everyone off.
@/HorseGirlAnon: Do you know how EXPENSIVE equestrian sports are? And she worked her own way back into it with no support? That’s insane. She deserved so much better.
@/TifosiMess: Charles in every interview: “Family is everything.”Meanwhile Isabelle: was forgotten at every major milestone in her life.
@/F1Receipts: It’s also the fact that Isabelle has never once publicly complained about it. No bitter comments, no shade—she just put her head down and worked. Meanwhile, Charles was out here with a whole family support system hyping him up.
@/F1Overthinker: Not to be dramatic, but if I were Charles, Arthur, or Lorenzo, I would simply never recover from the public dragging happening right now.
@/F1TeaSpiller:
Charles: “I’m so grateful to my family for supporting me.”
Isabelle: literally working at a horse stable just to be around them again.
@/JusticeForIsabelle: Nah, the fact that she was grinding through multiple jobs while Charles was out here buying sports cars, yachts, and luxury vacations is actually making me sick.
@/MonacoMess: Me reading Isabelle’s old interviews where she barely mentions herself and only hypes up her brothers, knowing now they weren’t doing the same for her: [GIF: "This is so much worse than I thought."]

Sebastian: Charles. Saw Belle’s post. Wanted to check in.
Charles: I’m fine.
Sebastian: You’re not. And that’s okay. But pretending doesn’t help.
Charles: It’s just— She has a horse, Seb. A whole horse. And she never told any of us.
Sebastian: Maybe you weren’t listening.
Charles: I WOULD HAVE REMEMBERED A HORSE.
Sebastian: Would you? You didn’t remember her birthday. You didn’t notice she moved out. You didn’t notice she left her job. What makes you think you would have noticed a horse?
Charles: It’s a HORSE, Seb! Not a haircut!
Sebastian: It’s not about the horse. It’s about what the horse represents. Freedom. Love. A piece of herself you never asked about. Or thought to give back.
Charles: It feels like she lied to us.
Sebastian: She didn’t lie. She protected herself. There’s a difference.
Charles: She didn’t even give us a chance to fix it.
Sebastian: Charles. You don't get to demand trust from someone you ignored. Trust is built. It’s not owed.
Charles: I just— I thought she was okay.
Sebastian: Because it was easier to think that than to ask.
Charles: She posted a horse, Seb. A HORSE. HOW LONG HAS SHE BEEN HIDING A HORSE??
Sebastian: (typing) (long pause) Charles. Focus. It’s not about the horse.
Charles: IT’S A LITTLE ABOUT THE HORSE.
Sebastian: Focus.
Charles: I’m trying.
Sebastian: Try harder. She deserves better.

@/F1TeaSpiller: Okay, so if you’re confused about why Isabelle Leclerc’s new horse is causing a meltdown, buckle up, because this is some Shakespearean family drama.
↳@/F1TeaSpiller: Basically, years ago, when Charles was climbing the motorsport ranks, the Leclerc family didn’t have the money to support all three kids in racing. Arthur had to stop karting, and Isabelle—who was really into horseback riding—had her horse sold to fund Charles’ career.
↳@/F1TeaSpiller: Yes. You read that correctly. They sold her childhood horse to support Charles.
↳@/F1TeaSpiller: Now, obviously, funding a motorsport career is insanely expensive, and a lot of families make sacrifices. But imagine being a teenager, loving your horse, and then one day—boom. Gone.
↳@/F1TeaSpiller: What makes it worse? Unlike Arthur, who eventually got the chance to restart his racing career, Isabelle never got that opportunity with riding. The family focused on Charles and never revisited her dreams.
↳@/F1TeaSpiller: Fast forward to now, and Isabelle just casually drops on Instagram that she owns a horse again—and it looks eerily similar to the one they sold.
↳@/F1TeaSpiller: Her brothers (Charles, Arthur, Lorenzo) all freaked out in the comments because they clearly had no idea she was even riding again, let alone that she had bought a horse.
↳@/F1TeaSpiller:  And this is where it gets messy. Because it means:
They never asked about her interests.
They had no clue she had started riding again.
They didn’t even know where she was living.
She never told them about any of this—which, like… speaks volumes.
↳@/F1TeaSpiller:  Anyway, people are connecting the dots and realizing Isabelle has probably been pulling away from her family for a while, and they just… didn’t notice.
↳@/F1TeaSpiller: Because let’s be real—how do you forget your sister’s birthday, AND not know she got back into the thing she loved most as a kid??
↳@/F1TeaSpiller:  TL;DR: The Leclerc brothers are in big trouble right now.
↳@/F1TeaSpiller: Oh, and the final kicker? Isabelle agreed in the comments that the horse was a gift. The way Isabelle phrased her post—“some things will always come back to you”—makes it sound like this horse is directly connected to the one she lost. Apparently it was her childhood’s horse last foal.
↳@/F1TeaSpiller: If that’s true? Then someone—who is not her family—went out of their way to find a descendant of her old horse and give her back a piece of what she lost.
↳@/F1TeaSpiller: And I have questions.
↳@/F1TeaSpiller: Because if her own family didn’t do this… who did?

The restaurant buzzed with quiet conversation and clinking silverware, candlelight glinting off polished glasses. It should have been relaxing — a rare, normal night in Monaco, tucked into a corner booth with Alexandra, sipping wine and trying to pretend that everything wasn’t on fire.
It wasn’t working.
Charles could barely focus on anything she was saying. His mind kept looping back to Belle’s Instagram post.
A horse. A goddamn horse.
Captioned cryptically, like some kind of soft dagger straight into his already-shredded guilt.
He hadn’t even known she still rode. He hadn’t known she had a horse.
What else didn’t he know? What else had he missed while he was busy pretending everything was fine?
He stabbed his fork into his salad with unnecessary violence.
Alexandra reached across the table, covering his hand. “Eat. You’re spiraling.”
Charles muttered something about not being hungry, but then — movement over Alexandra’s shoulder caught his eye.
He straightened immediately.
Across the room, near the outdoor terrace, sat two very familiar figures.
Emilie Abadie. And Lando Norris?!
Together. Laughing.
Leaning in too close over a shared plate of something fried.
It didn’t look like a casual meeting.
It looked like a date.
Charles’s blood pressure spiked instantly.
Because if Emilie was here — and laughing — that meant Belle wasn’t spiraling alone somewhere. Or worse — she wasn’t telling Emilie to tell him anything.
He shot up from his seat before Alexandra could stop him.
"Charles," she hissed, trying to grab his sleeve. "Sit down!"
But he was already marching across the restaurant, half-blinded by panic, guilt, and the deep, bone-deep need to do something.
Emilie spotted him halfway across the room. Her smile dropped like a rock into the ocean.
"Emilie," he said, voice tight. "We need to talk. About Belle."
Emilie set her wineglass down with infuriating calm.
"I’m having dinner," she said coolly. "Sit down or leave."
Charles didn’t sit. He couldn’t. The panic was a living thing inside him.
“She posted a horse,” he said, almost accusingly. “A horse! She never said anything! She’s still not answering me. You’ve seen her. You know. Why won’t you just—just tell me what’s going on?!”
For a second, Emilie just stared at him.
Then — like a blade sliding out of a sheath — her smile disappeared.
"You think you're owed answers now?" she asked, voice so sharp Charles actually leaned back a fraction. "After months of ignoring every warning sign? After standing in the same garage with her and looking through her like she wasn’t even real?"
Charles’s throat worked, but no sound came out.
"You want to know why she’s not answering you?" Emilie went on, soft and lethal. "Because you only want her when it's convenient. When it fits your schedule. When it doesn't mess up the perfect story you tell yourself about your family."
“Emilie—”
"No," she cut across him, fierce and furious. "You don’t get to interrupt. You didn’t text her. You didn’t notice she moved. You didn’t notice she quit her job. You didn’t notice when she smiled through being forgotten on the day that should have been about her."
Charles flinched like she’d slapped him.
"You forgot her birthday," Emilie said, each word a scalpel slicing down to bone. "And you think a few panicked phone calls are enough to fix that?"
He opened his mouth. Closed it.
"You don't love Belle the way you should," Emilie said, voice low, devastating. "You love the idea of her. The safe, quiet little sister who never asks for anything. Who never demands too much. Who lets you shine without ever threatening your light."
Charles stared at her, feeling hollowed out, feeling cracked open.
"You didn't see her when she needed you," Emilie said. "And now you don't deserve to see her at all — not until she says you can."
Beside her, Lando sat perfectly still, wide-eyed — half in awe, half in something dangerously close to admiration.
Charles shook his head, trying to hold onto something, anything.
“I just want to make it right—”
"Then start by not making it about you," Emilie snapped. "Start by realizing that sometimes you don’t get to be the hero of the story you broke."
Charles felt like the floor had dropped out from under him.
For a long moment, the restaurant spun around him — laughter, silverware, clinking glasses — but all he could hear was Emilie’s voice, merciless and true.
And he knew, in some terrible, undeniable way, that she was right.
He wasn’t the center of Belle’s story anymore.
He wasn’t even a footnote.
He had made himself a ghost in her life, and now he was furious that he couldn’t haunt it.
Emilie leaned back in her chair, perfectly calm now, like she hadn’t just torn him apart at the seams.
"Now," she said, reaching for her wine again, "go back to your table. Apologize to Alexandra. And maybe — if you’re lucky — figure out how to be someone your sister actually wants to let back in."
Charles didn’t say anything. He couldn’t.
He turned away on shaking legs, retreating across the restaurant under the weight of his own failure.

Text Messages: Charles Leclerc & Belle Verstappen
Charles: Isabelle.
Charles: I know you probably don’t want to hear from me. I get it. I’m still going to say this anyway.
Charles: I was fifteen when they sold Blanche. I knew how much she meant to you. I knew how much it would break your heart.
Charles: And I still let it happen. I told myself it wasn’t my decision. That it was out of my hands. That it was for the greater good.
Charles: But that’s not the truth. The truth is, I was selfish. I was scared. I was so focused on keeping my own dream alive that I let them take yours away.
Charles: I didn’t fight for you. I didn’t even try.
Charles: I keep thinking about that day. The way you looked at them. At me. Like you finally understood that nothing you said was ever going to change it. And still, I stayed quiet. I just let it happen.
Charles: You didn’t scream. You didn’t cry. You just… disappeared inside yourself. And we all pretended it would get better on its own.
Charles: It didn’t.
Charles: When Arthur got his second chance years later, we celebrated. But we never once thought about giving you yours. We just assumed you had "moved on."
Charles: I see now how wrong that was. You didn’t move on. You just learned how to survive being left behind.
Charles: And then we forgot your birthday. You were standing right there. Wearing Ferrari red. Smiling at me. And I still didn’t see you.
Charles: I keep asking myself how many times we made you feel invisible without even realizing it.
Charles: I don’t blame you for shutting us out. I don’t blame you for walking away. You deserved better than what we gave you.
Charles: And I’m sorry. I am so, so sorry.
Charles: I don’t know how to fix this. Maybe I can’t.
Charles: But I want to try. If you’ll let me.
Charles: If you need space, I’ll give you space. If you need time, I’ll wait. If you never want to speak to me again, I’ll understand.
Charles: But if there’s any chance at all—any way to rebuild even a fraction of what we broke— I’ll do whatever it takes.
Charles: No excuses. No conditions. No timeline.
Charles: I’ll wait as long as you need. I’ll listen as long as it takes.
Charles: You mattered then. You matter now. You always have. Even when we were too blind to see it.
Charles: I love you. I’m so sorry I ever made you doubt that.

— Borrowed time, part 1
‼️Caleb x reader. Reader not MC. University AU. Modern AU. Angst angst angst!
Everyone knows Caleb is in love with MC. Everyone. Including you. But that does not stop him from flirting with you, teasing you, keeping you close. And it definitely doesn’t stop you from falling for him—even when you know you’re just a stand-in, a place holder.
“Can’t we just enjoy the moment without making things complicated?”
word count = 5.3k
i poured my soul into this pls be kind 😭
part 2
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The fresh scent of flowers lingered in the air as a cool breeze rushed past you. You tucked your hair behind your ear, gripped your bag tighter, and glanced at the university entrance.
A nervous breath escaped your lips. “Here we go.”
Laughter and chatter filled the air, students scattered across the school grounds. Some waved goodbye to their parents, celebrating their child’s first day at the country’s top university. Others rushed toward their friends, voices overlapping in a symphony of excitement.
“Do you even know the way to your class?” a concerned voice rang out.
“Pfft. Pa-lease! I can find my way around on my own,” the other answered confidently. “You, on the other hand, should not be late to your class, up-per-class-man.” She jabbed a finger into his chest, punctuating each syllable.
His laugh overtook all the others in the area. “Right, right. Text me when you get to your class, pipsqueak.” He smiled and ruffled her hair.
“Ugh! You’re messing up my hair!” she groaned, swatting his hand away.
She pushed him—harder than she realized.
A sudden force knocked into you, sending you off balance. Your stomach lurched—before you could hit the ground, strong arms caught you, steadying you in place. A shriek escaped your lips.
“I’m so sorry!” he blurted out, pulling back just as quickly.
You pushed him off, steadying yourself, ignoring the faint trace of his cologne still lingering in the air.
“Oh my god, I didn’t see you!” A girl rushed forward, grabbing your hands like she’d known you forever. Her enthusiasm pierced through your ears, but her wide-eyed concern softened the frustration building in your chest.
“Are you okay? That was my fault!”
Your eyes met hers—bright, warm, and completely sincere.
“…Yeah, I’m fine.” The irritation dissolved as you took in her worried expression. “It’s okay.”
She beamed, relief washing over her. “I’m Michaela. What’s your name?”
It was history from then on.
You found out she was in the same year and major as you, and you became best friends almost instantly. Naturally, that meant getting close to him too—Caleb, as he introduced himself.
You also learned that you shared the same minor with him, so despite everything, you’d be seeing him in class.
It is another mundane day. You get to class and put your bag down on a seat, plopping your body down on the chair. A sigh leaves your lips as you look at your phone to check the time.
8:45. Having a class this early should be illegal.
You put your earphones on, hushing the quiet of the room with a faint song. You close your eyes as you wait for the others to reach.
“You’re early, kiddo,” his hand on your head pull you out of your daze. Your eyes shoot open and is met by a large yawn.
“I cant afford to be late again. I’m one mark away from failing the morning classes,” you groan as you tug off your earphones.
A sheepish smile tugs at his lips as his hand lingers a little too long in your hair, ruffling it just enough to mess it up before pulling back—slowly, like he enjoys the way it falls back into place.
He settles into the seat next to you, elbow propped against the desk, body angled toward yours.
“You need someone to wake you up in the morning?” he teases, his voice dipping just enough to make it sound like an offer.
“Are you offering?” you tilt your head, raising a brow.
Caleb grins, lazy and amused. “I wouldn’t want my shortcake failing a class I’m in,” he muses, tapping a knuckle lightly under your chin. The touch is fleeting, barely there, but enough to make your breath hitch. “Who else would I have to mess with?”
You’re used to the nickname he has given you now. It used to annoy the shit out of you, how he used to tease about you being below his shoulders or how you have to tiptoe to reach for something— shortcake, that’s where the name came from. You scoff, swatting his hand away. “Wow, I feel so valued.”
He chuckles, low and effortless, settling into his seat. “You should. I don’t just give my attention to anyone, y’know.”
“Oh? So I’m special?” You flash him a smug look, crossing your arms.
Caleb tilts his head, pretending to consider it. “Mmm… yeah, let’s call it that.”
He leans in just slightly, just enough to invade your space but not quite touch. His lips quirk up as he lowers his voice just for you to hear.
“…Or maybe I just like how cute you look when you get all flustered.”
You blink, heat creeping up your neck, but you refuse to let him win.
“So you admit it,” you say, keeping your tone light and teasing. “You think I’m cute.”
Caleb laughs, leaning back like he’s completely unbothered. “Shortcake, I’ve been saying that since day one. Keep up.”
His confidence is so insufferable you can’t help but roll your eyes. “God, I feel bad for all the freshmen falling for your charm.”
“Falling for it?” He raises a brow, smirking. “You say that like you’re not included, sweetheart.”
The nickname makes your stomach do a stupid little flip, but you mask it with a scoff. “Please, I’m completely immune to your antics.”
“Uh-huh.” Caleb leans in again, resting an elbow on the desk while watching you like he’s amused by a private joke. “Is that why your ears are turning red?”
Your hand immediately flies to your ear, and Caleb bursts out laughing.
“Wow,” you deadpan. “Upperclassmen really are the worst.”
“Aww, but I’m your favorite, aren’t I?” He tilts his head, smiling like he already knows the answer.
You roll your eyes at him. “Your confidence is getting to your head.”
Caleb’s hearty laugh fills the room, his presence naturally drawing attention. More students trickle in, filling the seats, and as expected, the weight of lingering gazes settles around you.
The girls steal quick glances at the man beside you, their whispers barely concealed. The boys, on the other hand, greet Caleb with easy familiarity, taking their places around him like it’s second nature.
It’s nothing new. You’re used to it.
“Hey, Yn,” a voice cuts through the chatter.
You glance over as Matt slides into the seat beside you, grinning.
“Hey, Matt,” you reply, offering a small smile.
“You coming to the party tomorrow?” he asks, leaning in just enough that you catch the faint scent of his cologne.
Before you can answer, Caleb hums beside you, loud enough to interrupt.
“What party?” he asks, resting an arm on the back of your chair like he’s settling in for the conversation.
Matt glances at him, unfazed. “The one at James’ place. Pretty much everyone’s going.”
Caleb nods slowly, then shifts his gaze to you, eyes twinkling with amusement. “And here I thought shortcake wasn’t the party type.”
You scoff, crossing your arms. “I can be fun.”
“Oh, yeah?” Caleb smirks, tapping a lazy rhythm against the desk. “Guess I’ll have to see it for myself, then.”
You raise a brow. “Wait—are you going?”
Caleb shrugs, his smirk never faltering. “Wouldn’t want my shortcake getting lost in the crowd, would I?”
Matt laughs, shaking his head. “Man, you’re acting like she needs a babysitter.”
Caleb tilts his head, looking at you like he’s thinking about something. Then, with obnoxious ease, he says, “Nah, just wouldn’t want her getting scooped up by some guy with bad intentions.”
Matt raises a brow. “And what, you’ve got good intentions?”
Caleb grins. “Not at all. But at least she knows mine.”
The room erupts in laughter, but your heart stumbles over itself for half a second.
Because there’s something about the way he says it—like it’s a joke, but not entirely.
You roll your eyes, forcing a smirk. “Right. So you’re just going for me, huh?”
Caleb doesn’t even blink. “Why do you look surprised?”
And maybe it’s just your imagination, but for a moment, his gaze lingers, just a second too long.
Matt scoffs, turning his attention to the professor entering the room. “Text me once you’ve made your mind, Yn.”
“Sure,” you answer, unaware of the furrow crawling its way up Caleb’s face. However, you don’t miss the way Caleb’s fingers stop their lazy tapping against the desk.
The class went by agonizingly slowly. You twirl your pen in your hands, scribbling stuff down to keep yourself from knocking out. The next thing you know, you feel a poke on your cheeks.
“You better get up before people see your drool,” Caleb smirks.
You quickly covered your face and wipe off the drool as Caleb laughs. You furrow your brows, feeling the embarrassment crawling up your face.
“I didn’t drool!”
“Sure, sure, whatever you say, shortcake,” he chuckles.
You both left for your next classes and the day quickly came to an end.
“You going to the party tomorrow?” You ask MC as you walk out of the campus.
She ponders for a second before answering, “Nah. I’m not big on parties and have so much work piling up,” she whines. “You should go, though! Have fun for both of us.”
Her sheepish smile never fails to bring one to your face as well. “I’m still deciding too.”
MC suddenly stops in her tracks, an excited gleam sparkles in her eyes.
“Are you free today, though?”
“Yeah… Why?” You suspiciously eye her.
Before you know it, you are at the mall, arms linked with hers as she weaves through the racks of clothes. “I just need one dress,” she says. “Fifteen minutes, tops.”
You should’ve known better.
It’s been forty five minutes and counting.
You dont mind, really. Shopping with her is familiar, easy. She’s the type to hold up dresses in front of you and make you spin for her, laughing as she debates which colour would fit her best.
And then her phone buzzes.
As soon as she unlocks it, her smile grows wider.
You dont even have to ask who it is.
She taps on her phone, giggles, and shoves her phone in your face.
Caleb [5:36 PM]: wya?
MC [5:37 PM]: Shopping. Why?
Caleb [5:37 PM]: Need me to carry your stuff? ;)
MC [5:37 PM]: You know me too well
“Caleb’s coming,” she beams.
You nod. It isn’t really anything out of the ordinary.
Unsurprisingly, a few minutes later, he’s here.
He slides into the store like he belongs there, like he already knew exactly where MC would be.
“Alright,” he sighs, grabbing the bags from her hands with ease. “What am I hauling this time?”
MC beams at him, poking his side. “A gentleman and a mind-reader. No wonder all the girls want you.”
The Caleb smirks, like it’s a well-worn joke between them. The joke mirrors the one you had with him this morning. But somehow, the interaction feels much… different.
Deeper. Warmer.
Like it belongs to them.
You watch as MC doesn’t hesitate to press a dress against Caleb’s chest, measuring the colour against him like it’s the most natural thing in the world. He doesn’t flinch, doesn’t joke, doesn’t make a big deal out of it.
Like it’s always been this way.
Just like the way he doesn’t just carry her bags— he takes them before she even asks. The way he doesn’t just respond— he already knows what she’ll say. The way she doesn’t have to tease to get a reaction— he’s already looking at her like she’s the only thing in the room.
And you— watching. Like you always do.
Eventually, MC disappears into the dressing room, leaving you and Caleb alone.
“Having fun?” Caleb drawls, lazily shifting the shopping bags in his hands. His gaze falling onto you for the first time this evening.
You huff, crossing your arms. “Oh, the best time. Watching you two be so disgustingly in sync is exactly how I wanted to spend my evening,” you joke. But somehow, it stings a little.
Caleb laughs, light and amused. “What, jealous I didn’t offer to carry your stuff too?”
You raise a brow, feigning thoughtfulness. “Maybe I just wanna see if I get the same VIP treatment.”
His smirk wides, “You want me to spoil you, shortcake? Should’ve just said so.”
It’s easy, the way he flirts with you. But it’s just that— easy.
MC steps out of the dressing room, and immediately— probably unconsciously too— he straightens.
“Thoughts?” she twirls.
“Get it.” His response is instant.
MC laughs. “What do you think, Yn?”
You smile, pushing the uneasiness down. “You’re pretty in everything you wear, MC.”
“You got a good eye, Yn,” Caleb adds, his eyes never leaving her. “It looks good on you.”
The warmth in his voice is undeniable.
It’s the way he doesn’t say it playfully, doesn’t throw in a teasing nickname, doesn’t smirk.
It’s the way you fall into the background.
The ride home was unbearably normal. MC chats away about weekend plans, upcoming assignments, something funny she saw on TikTok.
Caleb hums along, adding in a sarcastic comment here and there. His eyes are glued on the road sparing a few glances her way.
You sit at the back seat, nodding at the right moments, but your mind is already made up.
You need a break. From this. From them.
From him.
So when you see Matt’s notification—
Matt [7:03 PM]: You coming tmr?
You don’t even hesitate.
You [7:24 PM]: Yeah
The bass thumps against your chest the moment you step inside. The air is thick with laughter, sweat, and the sharp bite of alcohol.
You exhale, rolling your shoulders back.
You’re here to forget.
Forget the way he looks at MC like she’s his entire world. Forget the way your own heart stupidly flips when he looks at you.
“Yn! You finally show up!” Matt calls out to you as you maneuver through the thick crowd, pulling you into the group he is in.
“Guys, this is Yn,” he introduced you to the group. “Hi!” you shout through the music, a nervous smile crawls up your face.
You’re not used to this setting— the alcohol, the mingles, the thumping of music, the proximity, the lights and colours. Every thing is making you drunk, even before you’ve touched any alcohol.
One of the guys whistles. “Oh! You’re that third wheel between Caleb and Michaela!”
Hah.
The third wheel.
“Forget it, we’re here to have fun tonight!” someone else chirped in as he handed you a drink. You’re not sure what it is— it’s not like you care anyways.
“Yeah,” I force a smile as you drown the drink. The alcohol stings your breath, its heat slowly goes down your chest. You slowly exhale, welcoming the warmth that spreads through you.
The alcohol burns, but it’s a different kind of ache—one that numbs instead of sharpens. It’s exactly what you need.
You roll your shoulders back, forcing yourself to relax.
Forget it. Forget him.
The music pounds through your veins as Matt laughs beside you, clinking his drink against yours. “That’s the spirit.” He’s a bit too close. You can feel his body pressed against yours.
But maybe thats what you want right now.
You let yourself sink into the noise, the bodies moving around you, the way everything blurs at the edges. Someone pulls you into a conversation, another offers you another drink, and soon enough, you’re laughing at something you barely even hear. Bodies push and pull, you sway with the beats, lost in the moment, the lights, the colours, the intoxication.
For the first time in a while, you almost feel—
“You didn’t tell me you were coming, shortcake.”
Your stomach drops.
That voice—smooth, amused, effortlessly familiar.
Your entire body tenses before you even turn around.
And when you do, there he is.
Caleb.
Standing way too close, a drink in one hand, the other shoved lazily into his pocket. His hair is slightly tousled, his sleeveless shirt making it impossible not to notice the way his toned arms shift as he leans in.
But none of that matters.
Because Caleb doesn’t go to these parties.
Everyone knows that.
And yet—he’s here.
Your jaw tightens as you glance at him, forcing a smirk. “Didn’t think you liked these things.
He grins. “I don’t.”
Your brows knit together. “Then what are you doing here?”
He hums, taking a slow sip of his drink before tilting his head at you. “What do you think?”
Your grip tightens around your cup.
He’s messing with you. Like always.
And you should ignore it, should walk away before you let him ruin this night for you—
But you don’t.
You can’t.
Instead, you match his energy, your own lips curling into a smirk.
“Well, hope you’re not expecting me to entertain you,” you quip, voice light, teasing. “I’m actually busy.”
“Busy, huh?” He raises a brow, clearly amused. His gaze flickers past you, scanning the group you came with.
Your pulse quickens.
He’s not jealous. You know that.
But the way his eyes narrow just slightly, the way he lingers—like he’s assessing something, calculating something—
It almost feels like he is.
And for some stupid, reckless reason, you want to test it.
So you shrug, taking another sip of your drink. “Yeah. Matt has been real good company today.”
Caleb’s laugh is slow, deep, and entirely too amused.
“Interesting,” he repeats, nodding slightly. “Guess that means I should try harder, huh?”
Before you can respond, a voice cuts through the music.
“Caleb!”
A girl stumbles forward, eyes wide. “Oh my god, I didn’t think you’d actually come!”
Heads start turning. More people flock toward him, pulling him into their circle.
And just like that—you’re being pushed back.
You watch as Caleb greets them with that easy, sheepish grin—the one that makes everything look so effortless. The crowd bombards him with the same teasing remarks as always.
“Damn, what happened? Where’s your girl tonight?”
They don’t need to say her name. Everyone knows.
MC.
She’s not here. And somehow, Caleb being here without her is more surprising than him being here at all.
But he doesn’t seem bothered. He just chuckles, shaking his head.
“She doesn’t need me today.”
The words shouldn’t mean anything. But they do.
But before you can even process it, his gaze shifts and
Lands on you.
And his next words knock the breath from your lungs.
“Besides,” Caleb muses, voice light, playful, teasing— “Someone else probably needs me more right now.”
The crowd erupts.
“Ooooh, damn! Who’s the unlucky girl getting swept off her feet while your girl isn’t here to keep you in check?”
Caleb’s smile grows. Slowly, lazily.
He tilts his head, feigning innocence.
“What do you mean, unlucky?”
They laugh. They cheer.
You stand there, watching, feeling every single emotion crash into you at once.
Because they’re joking. Because he’s joking.
But somehow, you cannot muster a smile up your face.
He probably saw your face, or the look in your eyes, or probably the way your lips seem to tense a bit more.
He quickly finishes the drink in his hand, and someone quickly hands him another.
“Thanks,” he flashes a warm smile to the girl who hands him the drink as he reaches for it, brushing his hands softly against hers.
She’d probably replay the scene over and over for the next week.
His eyes finds yours once more before swiftly slipping out of the group of people.
You quickly turn away, desperate to vanish somewhere.
Anywhere.
Today was supposed to be a day without him.
However, your body betrays you. Perhaps it’s the alcohol, perhaps it’s the lingering sting of his gaze, perhaps it’s just him. The world tilts, and before you can catch yourself—
A strong arm wraps around your waist, pulling you into his chest and stabling you on your feet.
“How many drinks have you had?” His voice low, edged with amusement, but there’s something else in it, something almost concerned.
You barely process his words because his chest is against yours, his breath warm against your temple.
You exhale, hands instinctively gripping his shirt as you try to steady yourself— not just from the dizziness, but from everything else.
Too close. He’s too close.
And he knows it.
His grip doesn’t loosen. If anything, it tightens, his fingers pressing just slightly against the curve of your waist.
“You good?” he murmurs, voice dropping just a little lower.
You swallow, ignoring the way your heart pounds against your ribs.
“I’m fine,” you manage, but your voice betrays you— it’s softer, breathier than you meant it to be.
Caleb smirks.
“That so?”
He doesn’t let go.
Instead, he leans in just a fraction closer, eyes flickering down—to your lips, to the way your breath hitches.
It’s a game. You both know it’s a game.
“I heard people say you were looking for a distraction,” his voice dips, low and deliberate. His fingers trail lightly along your spine, just enough to make you shiver.
“Was Matt a good distraction?”
A pause.
His thumb brushes against your hip.
“Or do you want something more… intoxicating?”
Your breath catches.
All you can feel is the thumping of your heart against your ears, his low voice teasing your pulse, his warmth consuming you.
“I see the way you react to me,” he murmurs.
His fingers tighten, pulling you closer, his lips barely grazing your ear now.
“The distraction you want… it’s a distraction from me, isn’t it?”
His hand trails up, brushing the exposed skin of your arm.
“You don’t have to say it,” he muses, eyes glinting.
Your hands clutch at his shirt, unsteady, breathless.
“You like this, don’t you?” Caleb murmurs, his voice impossibly smooth, seductive.
Your throat tightens, but you don’t pull away.
You don’t deny it.
You can’t.
And he smirks, because he knows.
“Good.” His lips ghost over the curve of your jaw, not quite kissing, just enough to tease.
“Because I like yours too.”
His voice dips lower, slower— almost like a confession.
The world spins, but this time, it’s not from the alcohol.
Your grip on his shirt becomes tighter, if it’s even possible. He leans even closer, his breath warm against your lips, hovering— teasing, testing, waiting.
For you to pull away.
For you to stop him.
But you don’t.
You close your eyes, letting him consume you. He closes the distance his lips pressing into yours with slow, unhurried intent. There’s no rush, no urgency— just a deliberate pull, like he wants you to feel every second of it.
His hand on your waist tightens, fingers digging in just enough to make your breath catch. His other hand finds the curve of your jaw, tilting your face up, deepening the kiss like he’s memorizing the shape of your lips.
He moves— presses deeper, pulls you closer—
And deliberately, it turns hungrier. Slow, but consuming.
Like he’s claiming you— if only for this moment.
His teeth graze your bottom lip, a light tug, a silent dare.
Your fingers snake to the crevice of his neck, pulling him in like you don’t want this to end.
You somehow find a way to a secluded corner, and he pushes your back against the wall. He rests his arm on the side of your head, balancing his weight on the wall as his other hand rests protectively at your waist. His lips leave yours, trailing kisses down your neck. His teeth grazes your skin, earning gasps and small involuntary noises from you.
His lips drag along your pulse, slow and teasing, a deliberate contrast to the heat pooling between you.
You don’t even realize your fingers are tugging his hair, clinging to him like he’s the only thing keeping you steady.
Caleb chuckles against your skin, the sound low, smug— satisfied.
“You sound so sweet,” he murmurs, his lips grazing the spot just below your jaws.
“Caleb…” you breathe. “What does this mean?” The air suddenly turn thick as the words slip out before you can stop them.
Maybe it’s because you don’t want to believe that the one towering you right now is simply using you as a distraction from the girl he longs for. Maybe it’s because you want to hear an answer that would put the pit in your stomach at bay. Maybe you want to hear a lie that’ll at least make this moment feel more real. Or maybe you’re just too drunk on everything.
You swallow. “What are we?”
You feel his smirk against your skin before he nips at it, just enough to make your breath hitch.
His hand on your waist tightens, grounding you, holding you in place as he trails even lower. Then he exhales a quiet laugh— low, breathy, like you’ve asked something ridiculous.
His lips brush your ear.
“Why do we have to be anything?”
He leans back just enough to look at you, and there’s something in his eyes— something unreadable, something you wish you could hold onto.
“Isn’t this enough?”
His fingers trail up your arm, slow, lazy, desperate. “You enjoy this, don’t you?”
Your breath catches.
His thumb strokes along your jaw, coaxing you, soothing you. “I know you like this,” he murmurs, his voice a slow, dangerous drawl.
And then—he smiles.
That same playful, easy, charming smile.
Like this is just another game.
Like it isn’t breaking you apart.
“Just enjoy it, shortcake.”
He kisses you again before you can respond.
“Don’t over complicate things.”
You should say something, you should fire back—
But then he sucks at the sensitive skin near your collarbone, and all that escapes you is a sharp gasp.
He chuckles again, pleased. “That’s what I thought.”
His hand slides up your side, slow, lingering—like he enjoys the way your body reacts to him.
Like he enjoys this.
And somehow, that’s what makes your stomach tighten the most—
Not just his touch, or his lips, or the way he’s holding you like he doesn’t want to let go—
But the way he seems to want this as much as you do.
Like for once, he’s here with you.
Not her.
You let that thought sink in, drown in it, just for tonight.
Because tomorrow, this moment won’t exist.
But then, the dream came to an abrupt pause.
PING
The sound cuts through the haze, through the heat, through everything. Caleb stops whatever he was doing. His hands leave your body, his warmth fades, leaving you a breathless mess against the wall.
He exhales, sweeping his hair back as he pulls out his phone.
Your eyes fall to his lips, the way it’s a bit swollen with smudges of your lipstick faintly staining him.
Then— a smile.
Not the teasing, cocky smirk he likes to throw your way. It’s a warm, heart-wrenching smile that reaches his eyes.
You don’t need to see the screen to know.
MC.
“I gotta go,” he murmurs, eyes still glued to the phone, fingers moving quickly as he types.
You don’t say anything.
You cant.
“Don’t get home too late, shortcake,” he states, eyes still on the phone.
Without sparing you a glance, he turns away and disappears into the crowd.
And you—stupid, foolish you—
Just stand there.
Waiting for something that was never yours to begin with.
You force your eyes open only to be met with light piercing into your eyes. You are not sure how the night ended, or how you managed to pull yourself home. You shot up, quickly checking the time.
8:45. Fuck.
You push yourself from the bed, ignoring the pang in your head.
Running into class, you quickly open the door, heaving as you scan the room for seats.
“Yn!” a voice calls out.
You turn to the source, and sure enough, it’s him.
He pats the empty seat beside him. “Here.”
You hesitate.
For a second, just a second, you think maybe he’ll say something. Maybe he’ll acknowledge what happened last night.
Maybe he’ll give you something.
But Caleb just leans back in his seat, grinning like always. Like nothing happened.
Like his hands weren’t all over you.
Like his lips weren’t on yours.
Like he didn’t leave you standing there, breathless and alone.
“C’mon, shortcake,” he drawls, patting the empty seat beside him. “I saved you a seat.”
You swallow, legs moving before your mind can catch up, and you take the seat.
And he smirks, rubbing the sleep from his eyes like he wasn’t out ruining you the night before.
He’s joking.
Laughing.
Acting like last night was nothing.
Like you’re nothing.
And you force yourself to laugh along.
The day goes by like any other day. You find yourself sitting with MC and Caleb, grabbing dinner at a nearby restaurant you frequent as soon as the day ends.
“So… how was last night?” she asks.
You pause, unsure of what to say. “It was okay,” you finally say. “I was a total mess.”
“Caleb told me he dropped by. Did you guys meet there?”
“No,” he answers. “There were too many people, I wouldn’t have been able to find shortcake there even if I was sober!” he jokes.
A pit builds in your stomach. You’re not sure of what to feel, how to react.
So you smile.
“True.”
MC drabble on, talking about how she suddenly had an urge for a late night meal and Caleb was kind enough to bring one to her in the middle of last night.
“I didn’t ruin your fun, right?” she turns to Caleb.
“You know I have the most fun with you, pipsqueak,” he chuckles, pinching her nose.
Oh. So that’s why he left.
They probably talked more about useless stuff. You can’t really comprehend what the conversations are about anymore. You excuse yourself, blaming it on the hangover and saying that you drank a little too much last night and need a sleep.
The moment you step out, the weight in your chest collapses. Your fingers tremble as you clutch your bag tighter, as you force your legs to move, one step after another, out the door, down the road, through the crowd.
Everything feels too bright, too loud, too much.
MC’s words echo in your head.
“I suddenly had an urge for a late-night meal, and Caleb was kind enough to bring me one.”
Your stomach twists.
That’s who he belongs to.
Not you. Never you.
You don’t even remember the walk home.
It’s a blur—like the rest of the night, like every moment you spent trying to convince yourself you were anything more than temporary.
By the time you come to, you’re curled up in the corner of your room, knees pulled tight to your chest, the darkness swallowing you whole.
You feel empty.
Not just sad, not just hurt—hollow.
Like last night never even happened.
Like you never even happened.
Your fingers tighten against your arms, nails digging into your skin as if pain could anchor you to something real.
But nothing about this is real.
You were a moment.
A passing indulgence.
A warm body for him to hold when the one he truly wanted wasn’t there.
And the worst part?
You let him.
Because even if it wasn’t real, even if it was just for a second—
At least for that moment, he was yours.
PING
Your phone lights up.
Caleb [7:04 PM]: I’m free tonight
Caleb [7:04 PM]: You didn’t eat a lot earlier
Caleb [7:05 PM]: You want porridge?
Caleb [7:07 PM]: I’m coming over
You stare at the screen until the phone dims once more.
PING
MC [7:10 PM]: UGH I have to stay late at the library tonight
MC [7:10 PM]: Some last minute thing came up with my group project
MC [7:11 PM]: Gotta be stuck here forever T_T
Oh.

High School Oblivion ⸻ Gojo Satoru x reader
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
description ᯓ★ while going through his high school yearbook when helping his mother clean out their storage, Gojo's hands get stuck on a page with a picture of this one particular person. he cannot help but reminisce about the past as now a 30 year old and wonder how things could have turned out if everything went down differently.
cw ᯓ★ fluff, sfw, implicated angst, really mild angst, enemies to friends, one sided love, pining, academic rivals, lowkey bully Gojo, teasing and name calling—nothing really extreme, high school au, frenemies really, usage of fem oriented pronouns, reader is depicted as a fem presenting person, reader is depicted shorter than Gojo, written basically from Gojo's pov, time skips, nosebleed, sorry but use of y/n l/n i know that can be cringy but whatever.
𐙚 Playlist I used while writing this.

Satoru is a good son. In fact, he's kind, diligent, genuine, obedient, and- "Stop trying to slack off and get back to work." Well, his mother might disagree.
"You cannot be asking me to help you and also boss me around mom." Satoru says with a signature pout. Having Gojo Satoru as your son and raising him, doesn't really immunize a person to his pouts. Or maybe his mother is biased because he looks exactly like his father when he's trying to sway her as well and he pulls out what seems to be a Gojo family weapon. But naturally she has her own defenses.
"I'm only making you do this because you left all this behind yourself Sato, why didn't you take some of this or clean it when you moved out?"
"Wow just because I am a grown adult I cannot believe my own mother is treating me like one. Wow, what has the world come to." Satoru exclaimed like the drama queen he is.
"Stop being dramatic and help me properly you know I can't lift up all these boxes you have essentially filled with garbage. Clean out these last 3 boxes piled up in categories of what you need and what to throw out, I'll go check on your father."
It seems his whining doesn't always work on his mother the way it does on his father. Oh well. Though this has been such a nostalgic Sunday, being back in his childhood home, well second one, the neighborhood he grew up in for the better part of his teenage and young adulthood, getting forced into helping out his mother, and the smell of his father's cooking  on a weekend. Time might as well revert back.
While cleaning out one of the, what seems never ending, boxes of childhood belongings— Gojo Satoru stumbles upon something he hasn't seen in probably 12 years. His high school yearbook.
It is a natural thing to go into the realm of nostalgia when stumbling upon things like this. Flipping through the pages he really grasps how much he has already forgotten. I mean that is given, it's been 12 years since he graduated. It takes him 12 months to find his lost socks.
Looking through the pictures he realizes how much everything has changed. The length of Suguru's hair has changed, as well as Shoko's. Nanami has gotten more chiseled or tired; he cannot say exactly, Utahime finally has a decent haircut.  And look at him! Oh how naive he was, look at those big blue eyes with nothing behind them, covered by those obnoxious pairs of shades. Maybe some things haven't changed, never mind. He's probably never letting go of his obnoxious collection of shades.
As he flips through the pages his fingers get stuck on a particular page. And the memories just come flooding in without any effort.

[BACK IN HIGH SCHOOL, fifteen years ago]
Gojo Satoru saw you for the first time at the school gates on his first day during first year, at a new high school.
He was not very fond of the idea of going to school in a new city, away from the place he grew up in, unfamiliar people, and joining in the middle of the year when everyone has already somewhat settled down, it unnerved him. Unfortunately, throwing a fit about staying in a house his parents already sold and made all the arrangements to move to another place, couldn't help him much.
Some random kid showing up in the middle of the year is just a recipe to be bullied, or at least be prone to such jabs. He had decided prior to his first day, that he would go in with a stone cold face and be brave through this. Or, plan B.
While he was heavily contemplating standing in front of the main gate, the last bell already rang, he was officially late for his first day. Well he arrived a lot earlier, then somehow everyone passed by him and the final bell rang and he just stood there. And he was thinking about making a run for it, that was the plan B, taking a train back to Tokyo, and from there on he will figure it out. His parents will definitely know, find him, maybe this ordeal will finally make them understand how serious he was about not settling in here, even if that came at the cost of being grounded for life.
Satoru almost turned around to walk away from his new high school, his new city— his new home essentially— that is when a breeze of air gushed past him. When he looked forward, past the gates of the school, there was a fluff of hair, in the said school's uniform with a bag in her hands; dangling and teetering to fall on the ground, a key chain bouncing by one of the zippers— cute little orange cat, bouncing on her bag. She was running with all her might to make it, unlike him. That is all he saw of her, but he smelled much more. The lingering smell of her perfume, or soap or just- whatever it may be.
Lemons? Bergamot maybe. Distinctly citrus, not the sour kind, or the room freshener kind— a sweet smell of ripe citrus in the summer sun, kind of citrus. And flowers, peonies to be exact, that was very apparent.
Satoru, to this day, has never smelled that kind of tantalizing fragrance. To this day, he still remembers exactly how he stood there dumb; eyes wide open, mouth agape, and nothing but citrus with peonies haunting his chemoreceptors.
That day he tried to run after you, to put a name and face to the fragrance that in an instant hypnotized him, and to return that orange cat. Unfortunately, the teetering little cat keychain did fall off your bag, and when he ran after you to return it, he couldn't catch up to your haste. And since that day he didn't see you until a whole month passed.
That month he met his lifelong circle of friends, his best of friends. But it wasn't easy for neither of the sides to become acquainted, he was in a broody depressed rage about shifting and had already made up his mind that ‘well everyone must hate me’ — teenagers. Anyway, the first day he sat beside Geto Suguru he barked at Suguru for no reason, poor suguru was just being friendly and kind. So yes that broke into a little kerfuffle, got a lot of scolding from their homeroom teacher, Mr. Yaga. Later Suguru still dragged Satoru with him to eat lunch with his friends.
This is important to the story because, nostalgia and well, Satoru realized you were literally in the class next door, because of Shoko.
One day, when Suguru and him were irritating Kento, with a giggly Haibara, it took him only 2 weeks to drop his ‘you don't understand mom’ & ‘i am above you people’ act.
don't get it wrong, he still thinks he's better than most people, which isn't entirely wrong but god is it annoying. And that is exactly how you felt about Gojo Satoru upon your first impression of him.
On that fateful day you went to look for Shoko, and found her, as usual at the school basketball court with her friends, with an addition of white fluff. You had heard of Gojo Satoru a lot at that point, the girls in your class went to gather out of their class to check him out, from what you heard he picked a fight with Suguru that day. Off the get go you did not think much of him, probably some pretty face with connections and money to spare by getting into unnecessary trouble.
Satoru didn't see you entering the basketball court that day, but he smelled you. In the past month there had been few instances where his nostrils would be randomly engulfed by that citrusy peony smell, and he would halt in his pace to whip his head around to find the source. But alas, by the time he would turn around, you'd be nowhere to be found, and your perfume would slowly fade out.
And here you were, in all your physical tangible glory, for a second Satoru was taken aback seeing you there—somewhere somehow, before your fragrance could reach him, something about you struck him right in his throat. Maybe it was his subconscious, but he halted right where he was, mid match with Kento and Suguru. When was the ball snatched away from him, or when your bergamot and peonies perfume took over his senses; neither could be pinpointed. All he knew was that— it was you.
It was the girl with messed up collars and messy hair. Who smells divine. And the orange cat keychain!— Which has been sitting on his desk for a month. Satoru couldn't care less about Suguru egging him on about making a basket, nor did he see Kento slowly retire to the audience benches with Haibara— he stood there, staring at you, giving back Shoko some notebook; not important. He needed to go up to you. He needed to introduce himself! He couldn't let you slip away now.
So right before you told Shoko you'd be taking your leave, he rushed over there, and haphazardly blurted out— “you smell.”
“Excuse me!?” you looked at him flabbergasted.
“Satoru, why are you trying to pick a fight?” Shoko had to intervene. Because what a horrible way to introduce two of  your friends to each other.
“Listen Gojo, I do not know what your problem is, but I'd advise you to keep yourself and your opinions to yourself.” You warned him before storming out of the basketball court with furrowed eyebrows and red ears.
“Damn dude, do you even know her? Why would you even say that?” Suguru was honestly very entertained by this exchange that day, as he was thoroughly entertained by you two's interactions throughout high school.
Satoru didn't mean to start off on such a contemptuous note with you, he didn't really mean it. I mean- he did mean what he said, it's just his phrasing was poor. He has always been reprimanded about this problem by his mother since he was a kid, his father did find it extremely funny. At times, he too found his poor choice of vocabulary funny, unfortunately it wasn't one of those circumstances.
Later he had explained this to Shoko, telling Suguru anything was useless, he was too preoccupied with reenacting his failed attempt at making a good first impression on you. He then only revealed why he has been looking for the girl who smells like bergamot and peonies—which he didn't use as a descriptor of you, that much detail and all of them are on his neck about being a little obsessed creep. He didn't go into any details, he just told them he met you on his first day, at the school gates and you were late, also about how you dropped your keychain. After all that is why he ran after you that day to find you and give it back to you, but unfortunately he got blind sighted by your perfume, right? Well that is what he is willing to tell others and himself. At least he knew your name now.
And surprisingly you also knew him? Did you also see him at the gates that day? Or did you see him in the hallways? Or with Shoko? Or-Why was he so concerned anyway? All he needed was to return the keychain and get over this whole thing, you didn't seem like a very easygoing person. But maybe that had to do with his poor sentence structuring.
Tumblr media
Next time Satoru saw you, you were in your class. It was before the morning bell rang, he showed up at the door by the end of your classroom, to seem more inconspicuous. He was looking around to find you in the midst of the flock of girls gathered around him to enquire about his sudden visit, so much for being inconspicuous. Fortunately, he saw you soon enough at the front of the classroom in a seat by the windows — “Y/N!”
and everyone turned to stare at you, ‘great’—wasn't exactly what you were feeling. When you walked up to Satoru, you couldn't help but narrow your eyes at the guy. “Did not think we were on a first name basis.”
“Listen, I think we got off on the wrong foot, i-” Gojo tried to explain.
“I think we got off on exactly the right foot, I mean who just gets all up into someone's face and calls them smelly?” Your voice was already going up quite a bit.
“No, listen, that was a misunderstanding. I mean I did mean what I said, but-” he tried to, horribly, explain himself.
“Seriously, your audacity is immense, not only did you call me smelly, but now you're showing up to my class to pick a fight!?” you definitely lost some cool at that point. Everyone who wasn't already congregated, also gathered around, inside the classroom and outside in the hallway.
“First of all, will you stop cutting me off? I am trying to explain the situation here!” And now Satoru was also losing it.
“Explain? Explain what? Explain how you are above everything and literal incarnation of God or something? Oh did my lowly perfume perhaps irritate your nose hair?” The sarcasm clearly entailed what kind of image you have already built in your head about him. Perhaps it was from all sorts of exaggerated rumours about him. Though you didn't seem like one to fall for such petty rumours, like how he was an undercover actor or prince. But he was sure what kind of a person you thought this guy was—an arrogant asshole.
“Do you even know me?” said Satoru, now starting to become really irritated by your—in his opinion—unnecessary attitude. The last month has been hard enough as is. It took him time to settle down and not let people’s stares or baseless rumors get to him—some of them might have been funny if he was being honest. It was the friends he made in his first week who held him back from getting into more fights than he already did, and had his back against all the whispers.
“Do you know me well enough to shout my first name in front of my entire class!?” Well Satoru didn't have a comeback to that. “Exactly. So why don't you keep yourself and your arrogance out of my sight.” You grimaced.
“Arrogance? Oh please shortcake. You sure have a lot of words to spout with that height of yours.” Now he was just being petty.
“Oh because being a streetlight is so gratifying!”
“At least I don't cut people off mid sentence then talk shit!” and he has completely lost his cool.
“Oh don't put on pretence! Like you are some saint!? For who? The girls who flock you like some shiny stone?”
“Oh don't be salty just because I didn't give you some attention shortcake.” He was trying to get under your skin. He's now losing sight of his actual motive.
“Yes, because I am dying to be acknowledged by your highness, and how my smell is bothering his expensive nose!”
“Listen. That was entirely a misunderstanding, and you're not even trying to hear me out. You are the one picking a fight!”
“Oh I am sorry, I just can't stand pretentious people.” you stab your last quip with a glare, stabbing right through his chest, all while maintaining perfect eye contact.
“You know what. Nevermind shortcake, this was a waste of time.”
“I didn't even ask for your presence in the first place.” Your eyes deadpanned, remained trained on him, bored yet bothered. Both of your faces mere inches away, when did it get there? No idea. He was cranking his head down to glare back into your eyes, losing all motivation to return your keychain. And before he could come up with any further retort, the bell rang. Thankfully.
Tumblr media
Word of this interaction spread through the entire school like wildfire.
A few things were instantly established in the passing months since Satoru’s arrival—he was going to be popular, he is good at almost everything, and that he got along with almost everyone; even the people he did not have a good rapport with at the beginning, now he seemingly got along with them perfectly.
But, there was one person who could not stand him. And that person happened to be you. And everyone was aware of this. The students, respective and common friends, the teachers, heck even the principal knew.
Yet in the next 6 months since Satoru joined the school, he found himself crossing paths with you quite often. First he really did just avoid you; he gave up on giving back the keychain, that he did out of pettiness. He really did want to return it, but unless and until you dropped your attitude he was not letting the cat chain go, but he did take good care of it— it sat nicely on his desk, gave it a little bed made out of a soft napkin he got from his mom. Once in a while he would dust it and give it pats, and also speak to it. Yeah, after dinners when he would be studying he would speak to that little guy. He was feeling real friendly with it, which made him feel more bad for it, because at the end of the day it belonged to you.
In the instances where Satoru and you would run into each other; you could be laughing out loud and having a fun time and then, you would see him across the hallway and your face would morph into a scowl. It irked him, in a good way, it made him feel excited that he had such a sway on you. Even if he was convinced it was not that one single—incorrectly interpreted—comment about your perfume, which made you have such a poor opinion of him; there has to have been a deeper reason. From what he has gathered, you are the highest scoring student in the entire year, the teachers have a very good opinion of you, and you are helpful towards your peers— a straight A’s student, and their sophomore student body council secretary, a real model student. Even though you would mostly keep to yourself, you were still pretty well known by others.
Yet when you saw him, you would lose your cool. In fact from what he heard, the biggest takeaway from the fight you two had was that, ‘woah she can be like that?’, because people apparently had never seen you speak over a certain decibel. That stroked his ego. Made him feel sort of special, got him all giddy.
He was yet to realize the gravity of those feelings. The impact of the rush he felt when he smelled your sweet and citrusy fragrance when you passed by him, speeding up to lose sight of him faster. And he would always be left behind, to stand still, taking it all in.
His little teasing remarks, pranks, and fight initiators started soon after the fight you two had that day; started small really. Calling you shortcake constantly, interrupting you when you would go to their class to make some announcement on behalf of the student body. Trying to get better grades than you. Going over to the student body room, using his class president Kento as an excuse, to annoy you. Stealing your spectacles on days you would not put in contacts, trying it on and copying your mannerisms. His personal favorite was to snatch away any books, notebooks, or papers in your hands; to then hold it over his head. The whole thing about you jumping to try and get it out of his hands—which was an impossible task for you—gave him the opportunity to smell your scent much better.
During one of such instances, where he was holding one of the student council papers over his head, prolonging your work, he got a whiff of your shampoo. It smelled like fruits, strawberries and more citrus—it smelled like orange this time. This was fatal. The notes of bergamot and peonies were threatening his sanity as is, and now there were strawberries. He got so trancened by your presence that when his hand lowered involuntarily, you took the chance to grab onto his shoulder, to use him as a support to reach for your papers—he stood there looking into your squinting eyes as you retrieved the papers from his hand, until you walked off muttering curses at him.
And he just stood staring at your back. His eyes lingered on you long enough to see you turn back and throw a glare at him as you made a turn to disappear from his line of sight.
This went on, the teasing and squabbling, the name callings, use of the words shortcake and streetlight became significantly more frequent in your respective lexicons. Satoru loved using his pretty privileges to get the girls in your class to do his bidding, and had them sending you off somewhere without mentioning his name, the naive enchanted girls would abide with no questions asked. And when you would show up, he would throw a fake snake at you, or jumpscare you—though this was a more rare occurrence than his regular teasing, just so you would not get too used to this sort of pranks that it would lose its effect on you.
To him the idea of you was like this puzzling question nagging and straining on his mind, much like your physical self. But you got him excited and riled up. Also a little annoyed at the fact that you do not think of him worthy enough to spare any time. Which is why he came up with these mischievous ideas to elicit reactions out of you.
Nothing was more satisfying than to see you break under his little ventriloquism.
Tumblr media
The dynamics took a slight turn when you two became second year students.
On the fateful morning of the day when the results for first year’s finals came out—you found yourself standing dumbfounded, looking at your full name on the bulletin board, in second place.
You came in second.
Which is big! An amazing achievement. But it didn't feel like it. Especially when your name was displayed second to Gojo Satoru. He outdid you, he really did. Getting better grades than you in random tests and what not was one thing, then outranking you and ruining your plan for a perfect streak—was another thing. The horror and embarrassment of standing in front of the huge display of the grades, surrounded by everyone, having your failures announced in broad daylight, hearing everyone whisper about you—had you standing there like a cold unmoving statue.
So when Satoru got around to finally stroll in with ease, way after the results were announced, to come up to stand directly behind you—because as always the first person his eyes wander to find in a crowd is—you. He couldn't figure out why you glared at him differently, there was this underlying somber and a tilting glaze in your eyes. It was as if any moment you were going to break down into tears and his presence was anything but welcomed.
Praise his tongue, because thankfully that day it held itself back. Thankfully his senses caught on to what was happening. Coming in first or second or last did not matter much to him, because what mattered most to him was to simply  get under your skin, essentially the very reason why he ended up on the top of the list—but you did not find this funny or amusing. And it wasn't your usual annoyance and dismay of his antics, he really felt like he had done something to actually hurt you.
And which in return hurt him tenfold. Knowingly or unknowingly, Gojo Satoru bled himself a wound that he didn't know how to stitch close.
He didn't know what exactly hurt more, the fact you ran away from there that day after he arrived, without a single word. Or the fact that you've been completely ignoring his existence since that day. It has been really painful for him, because everytime he would get a glimpse of you or a whiff of you—you'd disappear from his sphere, as soon as humanly possible. He made every effort to try to speak to you. The rejoice he felt about being assigned to the same classroom as you this year, was starting to wear off. Especially when you made it explicitly clear through your actions that you had no intention of speaking to him or acknowledging his existence, more than ever. If you were helping out class president Nanami Kento with distributing papers, you would hand over his papers as nonchalantly as possible. In one of such several instances, he gave up on giving you space to get back to your usual self, and grabbed your wrist to explain himself.
“L/n, listen, i am really sorry alright. I don't know how it happened. I swear I did not mean to hurt you like that, I swear! I was just-” he blabbed on without making much sense, whispering as discreetly as possible. Even though the entire school was aware you two were not on even speaking terms anymore. He did not want to put you in a position where everyone made a spectacle out of you.
“I have better things to do, Gojo.” as always you would cut him off, without even sparing him as much as even a glare, then yank your wrist out of his grasp to go on your merry way.
He really did whatever he could, following you around like a kicked puppy, leaving notes on your desk, which was fortunately assigned right before his own desk—he was not sure if it made things a little easier for him, or a hundred times harder. It stung to find those notes crumbled up and sitting on his own desk later. Stung to sit behind you, when you refused to spare a glare or two his way, even some sharp remarks, or curses directed at him. The smell of sweet citrus and peonies did not help. The teachers would call him out more often than not for being distracted in class. Poor guy was really going through it.
The nail in his coffin was, when it had already been three weeks since the new year started. Three weeks and three days of you completely ignoring his pathetic attempts at saying sorry to you. On the fourth day of the fourth week, he found you in the teacher's lounge, speaking to one of your subject teachers;
“Goodness L/n. The year just started and you are already slacking off? Forgetting to submit the student council work on time, then forgetting your class assignments!? Is there something going on? No surprise Gojo surpassed you, do you understand the gravity of that? That careless guy outranked you. And you are making no efforts to rectify that! If things go on like this, next year you might come second from last.” he really crossed a line there.
If it was in Satoru’s capacity, he would’ve probably gone in and punched the man straight square in the jaw. He never really liked him to begin with. It was not about the fact he called Satoru careless, or the fact he always finds the flaws in Satoru—it was entirely about how he treated you. And it was not just in this instance, the guy has always been harsh and judgemental towards you, from what he heard it started since one day you corrected his mistake during class. And he was known to be not tolerant of anyone being better than him, especially students.
Satoru almost broke into the room, when his eyes locked with yours. You stood in front of the guy with your hands tightly gripped by your side, facing the door. Your already glossy eyes started to almost overflow with tears when your gaze fell on him, your body was slightly trembling. How you managed to blink away those tears, is beyond him. In the brief moment where you looked at him and looked away to control your emotions, making an effort to not break down into tears in front of the room full of teachers, the teacher who was scolding you, and your homeroom teacher Mr. Yaga who was giving you pitiful glaces—he knew interrupting will only make things worse for you.
More than anyone, you did not want to cry in front of Satoru. And Satoru was cognizant of that fact better than maybe even yourself.
So, he did the most sensible thing he could in that moment, for once, he simply stood outside with his back to the wall outside of the teacher’s room, and did not dare to look inside. And he just waited while remaining unnoticeable. Waiting for you to come out, he did not care for the looks thrown his way by the students roaming in the hallways, as long as they did not spare a glance towards you and try to snoop. What did he even want to say to you when you came out of there? He had no idea, and he knew he was the last person you would want to see right now, but for him you are the first person he wants to see everyday after he wakes up—so he could not just let you be on your own in this condition. Because he knew better than anyone, you were not one to wear your heart on your sleeves.
Satoru essentially blended in there, to the point you did not even notice him standing there when you left the room in a hurry, and headed the opposite way from your class. Recess was already over, that guy kept you in there for the entire recess period. ‘Goodness did you even eat?’ was something that crossed his mind among various spiteful and angry words he was muttering under his breath directed towards that teacher.
You were never one to miss a class, cutting classes without any valid reason was out of the question. But honestly if you tried to go in the class right now, he would have probably dragged you somewhere else himself. So he did the next best thing—followed you from a distance to wherever you were going. No one is going to care or notice if you two were gone at the same time, right? Well at least he could make up some excuse and take all the blame himself. He was not exactly known for his attendance record anyway, the sole reason why he made sure not to miss school was because you barely ever skipped school.
That is how he found you in the school yard at the back, near the flower patch the students planted, against the big Momiji tree. Where you are found most times during free periods, reading whatever book you may be reading at the moment. This time you were just crying, well it is not that he could see you, but he could tell. You were sitting with your knees to your chest, face buried in your hands, your entire figure was clearly trembling even from afar. Soft sobs jabbed his ears as he got closer and made his chest hurt. He slowly walked up to the tree trying not to scare you.
“Stop lurking like a creep.” You said with your head still down.
“Sorry. Didn't mean to startle you.” He said softly, and went to take a seat beside you, unsure if you were going to run away from him again.
You laid your legs flat on the grass and rested your back against the tree when he made his way over to you. When you looked up at him, eyes bloodshot red, glassy with tears, and more tears running down your cheeks, pooling at your chin— with your lips slightly jutted out and eyebrows bunched up in a frown, he just fell on his knees in front of you. Happerhazadly pulled out his handkerchief, and offered to take it.
“Is this funny to you?” you said with a frown. He knew you were upset but he couldn't help but think, and mindlessly said it out loud—
“Cute.”
“Ah so this is cute to you!? You are finding my misery and embarrassment cute. You seriously-” he cuts you off mid sentence.
“Will you ever actually let me speak!?” He takes a second and continues “Goodness shortcake, I meant you are cute. The tongue you've got on you, could wound thousands of soldiers and that brain of yours could beat Usain Bolt in a race.” He let out a short chuckle as he shook his head slightly and wiped your face with his handkerchief.
He gingerly wiped away the tears falling down your cheeks and chin, and the accumulated tears in the corners of your eyes. With utmost gentle touch he cleaned you up, which was characteristically contradictory.
You looked away from him without any retort. Too occupied with the fact he called you cute, to even notice that little gesture. So you further leaned back onto the tree as if it'll engulf you and make you not sit here with him and confront this heavy air hanging between you two. But also, who is stopping you from getting up and walking away?
Things have always been odd when Gojo Satoru was involved. Somehow after everything, time and time again you found yourself breaking down all your walls to let this guy have a peek at your most authentic self—someone who is envious, easily irritable, not the patient and tolerating soft-spoken girl everyone knows. And it irks you. It claws at your skin that he has been nothing but himself since day one; even before entering the gates of the school, he didn't think of the consequences but just turned his back to it and almost walked away. Yet you were rushing to make it on time, to not have any smear on your perfect record. Even if you were late only because you were up studying until late for the midterms looming over, you could not excuse one slip up.
Why didn't he run the opposite direction of the school but instead chased after you?—you couldn't pinpoint the answer. Everything about him just simply made your head scramble, enough so you didn't even realize you lost your beloved cat keychain until later during lunch. Even when you searched around everywhere, traced back your steps, and looked for it on the route back home; it was nowhere to be found. You cried yourself to sleep that night thinking how you lost the keychain, which had a cat who looked exactly like the cat you once loved and cherished. It was unfortunate enough to have lost him at such a young age, but the key chain helped to have his presence as if guiding you through obstacles.
And without him, things have been a mess. The only explanation you could rationalize was that Gojo Satoru was the one to blame for everything. If he hadn't turned back and ran in after you, you would've been more receptive to your keychain dropping instead of this giant guy running behind you, and wouldn't have lost it. If only he didn't become friends with Shoko and the others you wouldn't have to possibly interact with him. And then he wouldn't know of your existence and try to make it his mission to have your life fall apart.
“I'm sorry.”
What surprising words even for him. There have been very few people in his life he has ever genuinely apologized to. He could count them all on all his fingers, but he never expected to be where he was currently.
“I am sorry for saying that you smell, which I did not mean in the way it came off, I am just really bad with my words. I meant you smell really nice.” His face was completely serious and there was no trace of mockery or jest.
“I just- not to be a creep, I saw you on my first day here. At the school gates.” His eyes softened and his body started to fidget. He almost seemed—nervous?
“I almost ran back to Tokyo that day. I wasn't really, well to put it simply, happy about the whole moving thing. And if you hadn't rushed past me that day, I probably would've gone with my plan.” He throws an easy smile in your direction. “If you hadn't dropped this—” He digs around his pockets and encloses something in his fist.
“Maybe it would have been much harder for me and my parents to start off here. I am almost glad you dropped this little guy that day.” When he opened his fist, in the space between you two, there rested your lost keychain with the cat who reminded you of your dead pet cat.
Upon the sight of your beloved cat (keychain), your mouth opened a little with an audible gasp. Your hand went up timidly to touch it on his palm, actively sending shivers down his spine at the brush of your fingertips. All he could focus his eyes on was your hand, not even daring to look up at your face, afraid of the state of his own face.
He was sure the heat he felt rushing up to his cheeks and ears, must have evidently turned his pale skin into a blushing mess. If only he was not so preoccupied with his own emotions, he would have noticed the first speck of tear forming yet again in the corners of your eyes, before it could even fall down. Which he only felt when he saw the droplets of water that landed on the palm of his hand, effectively making him snap his head back up to look at your weeping face.
If he asked you then why were you crying? You would have probably just cried harder. So you were thankful that he did not ask.
He did not bother to ask any questions but simply took you in his arms, burying your face in his chest, actively soaking his shirt in the shivering winds of spring—letting you cry about nothing and everything, in the arms of the guy who has been the source of your annoyance since the day he arrived.
“You make no sense to me” your sobs became muffled through the fabric of his shirt and sweater vest.
“That is a weird way of thanking someone for returning the keychain which you clearly care a lot about.” he let out a soft giggle, trying to put you at ease. You pulled away from him, much to his dismay, looking only at the keychain he returned in the palm of your hands.
“Well you did take over my rank, and eavesdropped on me getting humiliated.” if it was in his power, he would kiss away that frown and pout.
With that one passing thought, Gojo Satoru had the first epiphany of his life that day. The answer to the inclination he felt towards hogging away all your attention.
“Satoru?” He finally heard from the haze of realization and panic that suddenly hit him. What was he supposed to do now? How was he going to ever face you with these confusing feelings?
“Are you alright?” you seemed genuinely concerned for him. Which melted him. Again, if only he was not so preoccupied with the mess in his head and chest, he would have realized much earlier you just called him by his first name. For the first time ever.
“Did you just call me by my first name?” he asked in genuine awe. While you shied away from him a little, which he found more endearing—this is an entirely biased perspective.
“Also! I really did not mean to outdo you! I swear! I didn't even try that hard, and I was sure you were going to do way better than me. Believe me it was just a fluke.” he blabbered on in a frenzy. “Wow, way to show off Gojo.” you said playfully with an eye roll and half smile, just impressed by the lack of imperious tone in his voice.
“No, I swear! Also i mean you have been looking really exhausted these days, maybe that is why, or else how can i ever beat you? I don't know, maybe because I am new. So they were like—’let’s give him this so he does not go around picking fights again’. Also come on you just called me Satoru what happened! No take backs.” you let out a big laugh at his silly rambling. “Goodness. Alright Satoru.”
And he's all smiles with the sound of his own heart beating in his ears.
“I will be taking back my spot from you. Keep it warm until then.” With those final words you stood up and walked away, the hand you used to give him a final pat on his shoulder—dragged off his shoulder with each step enlarging the distance between you two. The agonizingly lingering heat that it left behind, surely left a mark on his skin. It burnt, or perhaps shocked him—he was unclear which was worse.
One thing was clear as he watched you walk back into the building—he is in deep waters. And unfortunately he doesn't know how to swim.

It is truly beyond current Satoru, how teen Satoru's thought processes worked. Because how do you come to the conclusion that ‘i need to do everything in my power other than confront these feelings eating away at me.’
So after the confrontational and very heartfelt conversation with you, Satoru felt more powerless than ever at the mercy of the feelings you provoked within him. His head would feel light, chest would feel heavy, feet would go numb, and every moment he would get a whiff of your scent he could feel a threatening nosebleed.
Actually once during PE you sat beside him after running, sweaty and out of breath. You had simply leaned over him to grab the water bottle by his side—and his nose started bleeding. Until then he never believed in the whole thing about getting a nosebleed because of being overwhelmed, he genuinely believed one needs to be punched real hard in the face or hit something face first with good impact to get a nosebleed.
And now he stands corrected.
He wasn't sure whether it was the citrus, peonies, or the new found smell of your musk and natural odor which triggered the whole thing. Or maybe it was the worry you showed, scrambling to stop the blood dripping down his nose with your sweat soaked towel, tilting his head back with your hands and shouting for your PE teacher to come and help him—if only you knew all of it helped less and less.
The whole thing made him realize that he needs to get a grip!
And how did he execute that— by confiding in his friends? Making an effort to confess to you? No. He decided that it would be a brilliant idea to accept every confession he got and date as many girls as he could—to forget you, of course.
In his defense, he liked what you two got going right now. He gradually grew really close to you; started with simple conversations and jokes to then a fully established friendship. At least he liked the thought of being your friend.
He liked when you’d lean back in your chair to whisper little jokes to him, how the teacher completely fumbled that sentence. Or when you would give him candies, because you always carried some with you, or when you would come to him first before going to anyone else if you did not understand a lesson.
He particularly liked when you would share a rambling synopsis of the books you were currently reading or recently finished, it did not matter how little he cared about the books itself. Mr. ‘could not stop yapping for the love of god’, went completely silent when he stood before you. He loved when you would bring him your latest creation in the kitchen, because you were trying to learn how to cook and it did not matter to him how salty or half cooked and fully burnt the food would be. It was the effort you put into asking him about his favorites and tried making it. Like the effort he put into not letting you get a clue about how much of a digimon guy he was, because he would rather hear you talk about pokemons to him for hours. Did not matter that he thought digimon was superior.
Satoru might have been a popular guy since he joined; being extremely good looking, witty, academically gifted, part of the basketball team and having friends who were equally well known worked in his favor of being probably the most sought after guy in school. But that never made him a ‘player’, as one would assume. Often he would return the gifts he would get or politely decline confessions. So to everyone's surprise when he accepted the first confession, rumors went around—’maybe he was waiting for her to confess this entire time?’ Well, the rumors steered a different direction when she broke up with him within a week, and the next girl also broke up with him within a similar span of time. And when this pattern repeated for the rest of the year, people started labeling him as a cliche popular guy.
Around his sixteenth relationship, you happened to see him getting slapped real hard by the girl he was going out with at the time. They were talking behind the gardening shed, close to the Momiji tree you loved oh so dearly. All that shouting and cursing she did before slapping him, reached your ears, and as a diligent member of the student’s council you could not ignore it. The slap was echoing. She really left a mark on his cheeks, others have slapped him before for being so apathetic about everything, to get a one last satisfactory reaction out of him. But they have all failed at that. But this girl slapped him harder than anyone else had before her— while calling him a piece of shit for leading her on and wasting her time. So he got broken up with again. And he did not seem even a little bothered by this, his face only started contorting in a panic when his eyes landed on you standing the opposite way from the route his ex took to storm off.
Which ended up making him run away from you, a new occurrence for both of you. And this time you had to be the one to chase after him. You found him in the stairwells, where you silently just sat beside him. This must be what they call deja vu.
“So. long day huh?” you dragged each word awkwardly.
“You don’t have to do this Y/n.” he said without even looking at you, just looking down at his hands intertwined with each other, on his lap.
“Unfortunately for you, I want to. We are friends aren’t we?” you asked him expectantly.
And Satoru only ever wished to be your friend. He liked being friends with you. If you called him your friend the day he went to your class to return that keychain he would have been ecstatic, but right now? Being called your friend felt like yet another hit to his heart. He wants to leap out of the bounds of friendship and hold you, tell you how much he loves you. “Yes we are.” Those three words felt like gravel ripping his own skin.
“Then just hear me out won’t you?” and how can he say no to you looking up at him with those gorgeous eyes, and smiling lips. You can ask him for anything and he would not dare to deny. So naturally he nodded a yes wordlessly.
“You don’t seem like yourself these past few months. I am worried about you— we are all worried.” he stared at you as you took a pause to continue, assessing whether or not he was getting pissed off. “I know how much it sucks to hear that you have changed or something like that. But I do not mean it like that—you have been more distant, and just- well, you seem off.”
“You do know that you can tell me anything right? Is there anything bothering you? Are some kids bullying you? Tell me their names, I will take care of them.” you said with squinted eyes and a raised fist like you were ready to beat up some kids for him. And the sheer idea of that image tickled a laugh out of him.
“Sure you will shortcake.” he said in a fit of laughter. And you have never been more glad to hear him call you by that nickname. It has grown on you, similarly as he has grown on you.
“I am fine, at least now that I am sure about something, I am fine.” he said with a sigh, like something heavy lifted off his shoulders. “You sure right?” you enquired again just for confirmation.
“Yesssss, now stop furrowing your eyebrows, you are bound to get wrinkles before you are even thirty.” he was helpless to the smile that grew on his face, “wow way to thank the person who just cheered you up.”
“Stop trying to copy me shortcake.” he bumped his head slightly on yours, causing you to gasp and bump your forehead to his—some sort of retaliation if you will. Cannot let him get away with the last word, can you? “Don’t bump your big head with mine! What if I catch your dummy disease!?” you said with your forehead still on his forehead. Faces mere inches away from one another.
“Uh huh? And what are you gonna do about it?” Satoru has no idea where this was coming from or where this was going. But having you in such close proximity was definitely messing with his head.
“I will-” you cut yourself off, staring back into his eyes, unable to continue whatever you were trying to say—something about his eyes, the shades of blue, lapis and cerulean, making you incapable of continuing. It is as if there dwelled an ocean in his eyes, and unfortunately you never took your swimming lessons seriously.  “What are you going to do, shortcake?”
Well, no one found the answer to that question, as the bell rang and made the both of you flinch away from one another. In a moment of awkwardness about whatever that inexplicable tension was, you both did the most expected thing— laughed it off and headed towards the classroom.

Rest of the year passed with Satoru coming to terms with his feelings for you, hyping himself up to confess to you, and spending time with you. And somehow the both of you ended up getting the exact grades at the end of the year, ending up on the first rank together—something that was bound to happen when you are studying together, giggling in class together, eating together, feeding the cats who took a nap behind the school, together. Even when he was more of a dog guy.
And, Satoru really liked the idea of being together with you.
When senior year rolled around and he was determined to make you his by the time you guys graduated high school. Which is easier said than done.
Especially when he is not making any efforts other than just moving his pupils frantically between your lips and eyes, as you go on and on about the student body president’s new dumb mandate. His mind is probably looking at you with heart eyes, lying on its stomach, kicking its feet. Because it keeps repeating,
‘everyday baby, please say you're mine.’
It is a little embarrassing when he has to hide behind the bookshelves when you turn to look his way, because he would be piercing his longing gaze in the back of your head. Why did he not go up to the seat you were occupying at the library? Strike up an easy conversation; and have you offer him a seat with a smile, or get annoyed at him for talking too much and too loud in the library—he does not have the answer himself. All he knew while peeking at you from between the books in a nearby shelf, that his heart was palpitating like it may burst out of his chest any moment, and have the librarian come scold and shush it.
Walking by the hallways near your favorite Momiji tree, to catch a glimpse of you under it, by skipping on practice was the usual at this point. His teammates and coach have given up. Does not mean he doesn’t have to face consequences for these acts of stupidity. Especially on the off chance you visit one of his matches and he goes full statue in the middle of running up to the basket, then as he gains his composure back, he goes full throttle on his opponents. To show off his shots and dribbles during the match. The team and the coach let it pass sometimes, only because it guarantees that they will win the match. But they always make sure to lecture him about abandoning them to push past the hoard of people congratulating him, to only get to you. With groans of collective clamour going, “just confess already.”
Satoru, to this day, still wishes it was that easy. It is not that he never tried.
First time he tried to confess, you two were simply sitting in class, at your desks. Your chair was turned around, so you could sit facing him. He had stayed behind with you after classes ended, to help you with council work. But the yellow, orange and pink hues of the setting sun on your face, was leaving his usual talkative demeanor to be tongue tied. And when you leaned forward on the desk to snap your fingers in face to hopefully get him out of the trance where he was drowning—in those milliseconds between you moving off your seat, looming over him, and looking straight into his eyes; he almost blurted it all out. If only it was not for Kento to walk into the class and enquire about the progress you made on the work, he would have laid it all out for you.
That was not the only time he was teetering over the edge. One time you dragged him to the garden behind school during PE to feed the cats who take naps around there. He actually blurted out “I am in love.”
Which naturally had you snap your head in his direction, your surprise also had the cat lying in your lap surprised, that it also looked in his direction. So he backpedaled, defending his words by rephrasing them, “No! I mean, I am loving this. As in, like, not having to do PE class!” you laughed it off, joking that his poor choices of words and phrasing will definitely get him in deep trouble one day.
There had been so many instances he just almost verbalized his feelings, almost found that serenity in having you know the reason behind the ache in his chest, and the foggy fuzz clouding his judgment around you. But he only wishes he actually followed through with his emotions. Often he found his emotions to be stuck in a battle between his tongue and brain.
After many such (failed) attempts, he finally decided to just lay it all out after the graduation ceremony. As he could not burden you with his feelings when he spent the entirety of the year dilly dallying so much that the finals and entrance exams were near enough to have students lose sleep.
Sometimes in his dreams, Satoru still dreams about the day of his high school graduation ceremony. He dreams of the very events that took place that day, and different possibilities.
He woke up much earlier than usual that morning. He did not want to be late at any cost. Not because he wanted to be there to hear the principal give the same old speech she gives every year or hear the student body president, Kamo Noritoshi, give out yet another speech, he has had enough of his boring speeches as well. He really just wanted to hear your valedictorian speech.
He was glad he did not earn the highest GPA in his year— no, it was not because he did not want to give some stupid speech, though it was part of the reason. He was beyond happy for you, instead of gloating over his own GPA which made him come in second to you, he was more thrilled over you beating him to the first spot. He was so happy that day he literally hugged you so tight, your inner organs almost spilled out from the looks of it, going as far as to lift you up in the air and making a whole show out of it. Honestly from afar it would be confusing to conclude who exactly did better, though anyone who has lingered their eyes a bit too long on Gojo Satoru knew better, which was practically the entire school, it was not surprising to see him act as such. It was rather surprising he did not tie ranks with you, considering his capacity to ace anything and everything, especially academics. But it was ordinary to see him celebrate your wins much more loudly than everyone combined.
When you asked him the question how he did not get a higher GPA than you, later over celebratory ice cream with your friend groups. He just shrugged it off and simply told you that, “Eh. I just goofed around and had a fun senior year, considering these are the most memorable years of one’s life.” with a smug smile stretched across his face, accompanied by his raised shoulders.
“Sure, it was totally not because you were feeling too lazy.” at this point you were all too familiar with Gojo’s pattern. And unlike in the past, you found it more fun to banter with his silliness than getting angry at his conceit. It was still annoying, but not as annoying as it used to be.
“Tch. Tch. Shortcake, you just do not get the concept of fun as well as you get the concept of natural selection. ”
Despite his claims he knew why he did not surpass you, well not because he granted you that position out of pity or his obvious feelings towards you. He respected you too much to one day have you find out your achievements were not well earned, it would eat him up otherwise. Though the reason still was you, or perhaps it was his pathetic attempts at winning you over and expanding the definition of your relationship with him.
Anyway, currently he was sitting unsteady in the back of his father’s car, stuck in a jam, not giving ear to either of his parents reassuring him from the front that they will get there in time. But unfortunately for the Gojos, their son was not the patient kind.
Which is exactly why they didn't object much other than a few shouts when Satoru ran out of the car, with his gown and graduation hat tucked under his armpits. Thankfully they were not stuck too far from the school, but Satoru was unfortunately late for his own graduation ceremony. When he ran inside the auditorium, the hall full of parents, students, teachers, and peers alike, were staring him down— maybe for rudely interrupting the principal's speech, or for looking drop dead gorgeous while sweating buckets; it was unclear.
He silently walked up to where his class was standing and took his place in the empty space left behind for him. The principal resumed with a cough, continuing whatever faux inspirational speech she may have been talking about. His eyes roamed around frantically to land on yours, staring back at him, scrunching and raising your eyebrows in a comical way. While pointing at your watch, silently reprimanding him for his tardiness, all Satoru could do was smile and shrug like a helpless kicked puppy. But as if that has ever worked on you, so you rolled your eyes at him with the shake of your head and mouthed at him to focus on the speech.
After that very boring speech, and handing out the certificates, followed by another boring speech by Kamo Noritoshi, it was finally time for your speech.
When you stood waiting in the left wing of the stage for your cue, he could clearly see you nervously playing with your hands. Fortunately his intense stares had you looking in his direction, so he waved his hand a little to get your focus, and just wished you a silent ‘goodluck, you got this!’ through exaggerated mouth movements.
Was it cute? Or weird? Either way, it made you smile and ease up, and that's all that matters to him. He was probably the one cheering the loudest for you among everyone in there, your parents or friends or anyone, couldn't have dared to match his voice echoing through walls, to the point the teachers had to shut him up by the very end of your speech. Because he kept clapping or whistling really loud in between every pause.
“At the end of the day, these years we've spent here will always stick with us. For better or for worse, and all I want, is to thank those people who made it bearable through all of it. And I hope you all have a future filled with achievements, celebrated alongside those people around you, who make it bearable. Thank you very much.”
Satoru did not cheer the loudest this time around, his silence was drowned out by the loud cheers or the flying caps around him. He was too busy standing there, a hostage to your teary eyes, and a smiling face coming down the stage.
After a few very busy hours of hugs and pictures with family and friends, and some supportive words as well as teasing lectures from the teachers; Satoru went off to find you surrounded by few people.
“Hey!” he came behind you and spoke in a breathy whisper in your right ear.
“Ah! Satoru! Oh my goodness I've been looking for you!” You slapped his arm lightly as he tried to say,
“Listen, I-” “I need to speak to you. Come with me. Sorry, will you excuse us?” You dragged him by his left hand, tangled with your own right hand. It is not that he has never held hands, he's done plenty more than that, but your hands meant more. And he hopes you heard his heart beating through his hands, as you held onto it and dragged him to a random empty hallway.
“I suppose this works, I was gonna drag you away myself.” He lets out a little chuckle as he settles opposite you, facing you, “I wanted to-”
“I am moving away.”
“What?”
“I am moving out of the country. I, um, applied to this university abroad and they accepted me. It was not confirmed until last week, I've told almost everyone but.” You take a pause and stare down at his blank face, rid off the little shy smile and blush adorning him just a second ago, before continuing, “But, I just did not- I mean, I could not just figure out how I was going to tell you.”
Satoru lets out a dry chuckle. “What's so hard about that? Come on shortcake. It's just me.”
“I, I know. I mean-” this time he interjects.
“Are you happy?”
You blink twice and answer, “More than I thought I would be.”
‘Then that's enough for me.’ Is what Satoru meant to say then, instead he said something different.
“I am really happy for you Y/n. Will miss you shortcake.” He cracks a genuine smile, despite the storm waiting to unleash in his chest through the waterworks of his eyes, regardless he was still happy in your happiness.
When you leaped into his arms with a tight grip on his back, mumbling a choked up “I'll actually miss you more dummy.”
“Nope can’t let you have this one too.” with a chuckle he patted your head as you cried in his arms for the second time since you have known him, once was one too many times for you but here you are. Perhaps this was the last time, he thought.
“Also, I want you to have this.” you handed him a keychain, similar to yours, but instead of an orange little cat, there was a white cat attached to it. “When I saw it, it reminded me of you.” You placed the little guy on his palm, and he closed his fist around it with every intention of cherishing it for eternity.
“I’ll see you soon right?” You asked him, as you looked up at him with tear stains on your cheek, matching the stain on his shirt, and he just nodded with a tight grip around the keychain. Maybe he was too scared to verbally give you any promises, otherwise he would start breaking down much harder than you. But one thing he was sure about,
“You'll do great shortcake, you always have.”
‘As I will always love you.’
Tumblr media
On days as such, filled with nostalgia. Or on nights spent staring at his ceiling, wide awake, clock ticking closer and closer to the next day— he thinks of you. He thinks about the different possibilities and the most regrettable moments of his life, and thinks, what if?
What if he had chosen a different line of work instead of taking over for his father? What if he went to that pop up shop before they sold out of their limited edition creps? Or what if he chose to go to that school reunion five years ago with Suguru and everyone else. Would he have met you?
What if he had told you he loved you that day? What if he did not wallow in his own self pity and made a better effort at reaching out to you when you suddenly stopped contacting him during second year of University? What if he swallowed down the resentment over your silence and flew across the globe to you? Would not have been the first time he did that. It was the automated voice telling him that the number he dialed does not exist anymore, and the complete refusal from mutual friends to let him know about your whereabouts—that irked him. What did he do so wrong for you to even remove the little pleasure he enjoyed from having you at the very least as a friend.
Maybe if he asked you selfishly to not move away altogether, things would have been different. But how could he, when he never had any concrete dreams of his own other than pursuing in his father's footsteps, to now take over for him. The way your eyes always shined bright with aspirations, and the amount of hard work you put into achieving them, made him try for himself.
Then how could he have been selfish with the one person whom he selflessly gave away his heart to?
“Sato! Come eat! Finish that later!” his mother shouted from inside, breaking the trance of reminiscence. “Yesss mom!” he shouted back to let her know.
And when he set to go inside, he felt something heavy on his legs. While cleaning the boxes, Satoru had gone to sit on the edge of the patio, with his legs hanging from his edge. The height was long enough to have him lose his sight about where his legs were below the knees to his feet comfortably touching the ground.
When he crouched down to look at what was weighing him down, he found a white fluffy cat; clearly well taken care of, lying comfortably, belly up, on top of both of his feet. Set of blue hued pupils peeking out of his blinking eyes. And a smug smile of contentment on his face, either satisfied with his nap or from annoying Satoru. As cute of a look alike  this cat may have been to the one on the keychain you gave him—which he still uses everyday to hold all his important keyes—Satoru could tell that this cat was one big menace.
“Meowwww” the feline wailed, when Satoru moved his feet off the ground to take a proper look at the creature. The cat in search of his confiscated comfort, crawled up his legs, up to his lap and made himself comfortable.
Satoru leans back to rest his weight on both of his palms, placed on either side of his torso. He lets out a dry huff “Huh. aren’t you one spoiled little guy?”
“Meow.” the cat quips as if agreeing with Satoru, his eyes were closed, trying to get back his lost sleep.
“And what is your name?” Satoru asked the cat and felt foolish that very next instance. Instead of waiting for the cat’s response—because that will obviously not answer his question—he goes to check the yellow collar adorned on the cat’s neck to check for a nametag.
“ICHIGO!” a loud familiar voice cried behind the hedges that protected the view into his parent’s front yard.
Upon hearing the call, the cat’s ears sprung up and went back, going alert. In a blink of an eye the cat ran off of his lap, out of their main gate— in what seemed like mere seconds. And his parent’s house is pretty huge, the patio to the front gate takes well over thirty seconds to get to when you are in a hurry.
So Satoru ran behind the cat, well after it was gone from his sight, worrying it might run into something or hurt himself. But just as he stepped out of the gate, he saw the cat cuddled up in a person’s arms, who was crouched down in relief, obstructing the view to their face. Though the shade of the hair is much familiar to him just as the voice, but the length now shorter than how he remembers it to be. But that same citrus and peony scent remained, infiltrating his olfactory sense before his eyes could fathom the figure in front of him. Or maybe he did not want to believe the reality of the situation to begin with.
“Never do that again! Do you know how scared I was? Why would you run after a butterfly like that!? I am never letting you off your leash again!” You held the cat out, away from your embrace, finally standing straight. Dangling him in the air by his arms, like some sort of punishment.
“Meowww” the cat whined in a pitiful tone, moving his claws in a way as if asking to be held closer again.
“No Ichi. No amount of whining is getting you out of this mister!” while reprimanding the cat, you forgot to acknowledge the person standing upfront.
“Y/n?”
You look up to see who called you out in the middle of scolding your cat. To only see another ball of familiar white fluffy hair, and cerulean eyes, the ones you’ve once loathed with your entire being, and dreamed of countless nights. Standing a few inches taller than what his previously already behemoth height during teen years used to be.
“Satoru?”
Both of you stood there confused and mesmerized by one another’s presence, to have run into each other under such coincidental circumstances, how fateful. With a more confused Ichigo looking back and forth between you two, now standing on his own four legs on the ground. Probably trying to solve the mystery of the heavy silence and air hanging between you two. From the looks of the mirrored shock, and open mouthed gasps that left your respective mouths—seems like this unanticipated meeting was long overdue.
The beauty of fate truly lies in such oblivious encounters. And those who sneak into your life just as unexpectedly, as they fade out wordlessly.

I just started watching Dimension 20’s Fantasy high, halfway through sophomore year, and I do want a fic where people realise just how used to being part of a group the bad kids are. For example-
-I fully believe every single one of them is used to Riz climbing them so he can see better. It’s usually Gorgug, but it’s happened to all of them at some point. They might hold out their arm for him to jump onto a counter, or so he can pin a clue to his board. Before they all sit at a table, at least one of them makes sure their 4’4 friend can jump onto the table.
-Every single one of them has also caught Adaine after she had a vision. Sometimes she can just shake them off, but the big ones make her falter in what she’s doing, which can be dangerous. It happened once in a fight, and now the people standing closest to her are always ready.
-Fabian doesn’t really recognise he has a blind spot with his eye injury, because the others immediately clocked it. But this also means they walk in between him and the road, in case some idiot mounts the curb. They keep an eye on anything to his right, shifting drinks and pushing chairs if they can tell his depth perception is a little off.
-Fig usually stands in the middle of the group to intimidate people into not messing with them, so it’s sort of become habit to just crowd around her. After the battle, if no one’s seriously hurt or anything, everyone just wanders over to Fig. At this point, Fig is always the first one to yell out after a fight, just so they can regroup.
-Gorgug is the go-to for lap-sits, leaning, anything to do with being physically supported by another persons body. His hoodie is soft, and his headphones are loud enough that you can kind of hear it if you’re leaning on him. His parents weren’t great with nonchalant physical contact, in case he was already upset, so he takes great joy in his friends not being scared to hug him for fun.
-Kristin has left her staff at every single house she could with the bad kids. She leaves her bag in classrooms, the library, the cafeteria. Whenever the group leave somewhere, they do a full scan, because Kristin has probably left something and they grab it for her. No one has any clue who her bag actually belongs to, because all of the bad kids have been seen carrying it around school several times.
The school at large know who the bad kids are, and the town recognise them, but they still don’t know why all of them double check a room before leaving, or collectively carry a small stool around with them. One student with a fantasy iron deficiency faints in class and Kristin catches her before she hits the ground. Once, Fig isn’t in school for a day and all the bad kids have this restless energy about them. It is not uncommon to see them on the field during lunch, curled up in a pile on Gorgug. One guy tries to surprise Fabian from the right and gets body checked by Adaine before it even registers.
It’s sort of uncomfortable for everyone to see any of them without the others, because it means a) the rest of them committed a crime, b) the rest of them are committing a crime, or c) the rest of them are about to run in and start planning to commit a crime. And no one wants to lose their plausible deniability here.

i have this little thought bouncing around in my head! single father simon. (a drabble)
*shrug*
simon ends up with his daughter winnie after her mother abandons her at his doorstep. he was the father, it was his turn to take care of her. simon could handle warfare, he could handle guns and sweat and metal. he could handle blood and bruises.
but a fussy newborn was a little too much for him.
enter you, it was your summer off from university and you were making extra money by babysitting for parents who couldn't afford weeks of posh summer camps. it was decent work and you were pretty good with them! so being concerned for your neighbour, simon's well being, you offered to watch winnie.
simon very well fell in love with you the moment you took the baby girl into you arms. winnie instantly got settled into your grasp, almost like you were her mother.
"what a lovely baby girl." you cooed, you looked at her with such affection already. you looked at simon and smiled, "she looks too cute to be yours." a playful jab.
you watched winnie while simon was at work. you didn't know what he did for work, but you tried not to ask too many questions. all you knew was that the checks didn't bounce when you cashed them.
but being with winnie for so many days had gossip go through the apartment building. you had a baby with simon? why were you in two separate apartments? where did the lovely newborn sleep? she SHOULD be sleeping with her mother (you).
when you tried to correct them, simon always said, "ah don't worry. we'll be havin' our own place soon enough!" his large hand snaked around your waist.
you just looked down at winnie who was sound asleep in her stroller. she couldn't care less who her mommy and daddy were. it wouldn't be hard to be the mother she'd otherwise be without, right?
that was the angle that simon too.
you'd make the most perfect mrs. riley. you were already taking care of winnie, but also him when he came home. you shouldn't be the nanny, you should be winnie's mama.
"she really loves you." simon remarked when you went with him to the pool.
you were in a one piece swim suit and you were making sure that the baby was out of the sun and had sunscreen on. you didn't want her to get sick or burned.
currently she was resting on your chest while you were in the shade. in your free hand you had a book in it and the other was on winnie's back. you said, "i don't know what you're talking about." as if you hadn't heard the comments from the little old ladies about how sweet you two looked.
"look like a real mama."
you looked to him and raised your eyebrows, "i thought i was the babysitter, mister riley."
simon placed a hand on your thigh then rubbed up and down, "nah."
it didn't take long for you and simon to get intimate. he asked you to stay because winnie had been having trouble sleeping. you two shared a glass of wine and then you found yourself face first into simon's bed. the scent of him filled your head as he fucked you into the comfortable mattress.
he loved the sound of your pussy as he fucked you without much abandon. the thickness on your hips would only grow once he made sure his next child was inside of you. you'd be such a good mama, unlike that previous bitch who left him.
maybe there was a good reason why she left him.
cum clung to the fuzz on your pussy lips and was a bitch to clean in the shower come morning.
he woke you up and said, "she needs her mama. she gettin' fussy, doll." then watched you stumble around to find clothes to wear while you checked on winnie as if the little girl was your own. his hand was wrapped around his cock. he wondered how many more times he could finish in you before you stumbled back to your apartment.
the answer was four.
it wouldn't be easy carrying for a sprouting little baby plus the baby boy you were currently pregnant with. you've put school off for a little while and moved in with simon, your due date was in the middle of the semester. now you were trying to figure out what food was good for a teething winnie while also trying to manage the riley son that was occupying your womb.
you were making dinner for your growing family with a cute little maternity dress of. simon was at the table with winnie. he knew that one day he'd have to tell her that you weren't her actual mama. but you were raising her and her little brother too.
"see there's mama." simon said in that grumbled voice of his, pointing in your direction.
you didn't imagine that you would've ended up as a stay-at-home mother to two children who were than a year apart. but as you felt the shift of your 'second' baby inside of you, you smiled.
you heard winnie make a little noise to get your attention. you checked on the pot of sauce on the stove before you turned away to check on your little girl.

coworker!james and his love hate gf meeting his parents by accident? she thinks he won’t own up to her but he’s super proud and calls her his girlfriend (for the first time 0.o)
coworker frenemies <3 fem, 1.2k
You get the foolish idea to check in on James. Dying, he’d texted, won’t be in. Don’t miss me too much <3
And then, throughout the day, can you ask Remus to answer his phone please lovely, sorry
Can you make sure my smiskis are all okay
I miss you too much
Did you see that thing on the news about the goats in Spain ?
Sometime around three, as you’re preparing to leave, his sporadic texting ends. You and Remus get on alright without James, and a quiet day comes to a close at four.
“See you tomorrow,” you say.
“Yeah, see you, have a good night,” he says back.
You might. It depends on how James is feeling. You go to the shops on the way and wrack your brain for the things he likes. You know he likes cream of chicken soup: he brings it in his thermos sometimes for lunch. He likes freddos, tangerines, melon slices, and everybody likes balsam tissues and painkillers.
James doesn’t necessarily have to let you take care of him, but it’s a care package. He can take what he wants and bin the rest. You get him some cool patches for his eyes and a box of teabags and consider yourself finished, paying, packing it into a tote, and carrying it back to the car. You get nervous on the road leading into James’ flat building, but Sirius’ car isn’t outside, just an old BMW that looks well loved.
You pop the button to be let into the building and seconds later you’re opening the door. You make your way up the tight steps to the second floor and then the third, pausing to catch your breath lest you seem unfit just outside the door.
You raise your hand to knock. James laughs from somewhere inside, loudly, and that laugh travels toward you until he’s yanking the door half off of its hinges.
When he sees it’s you, he grins. “Hello, beautiful.”
“Hi. You okay?”
He sniffles, but he doesn’t seem too poorly. His eyes are sore and he has a tissue in hand, but James is nothing if not spritely. “I’m okay, lovely, are you okay? To what do I owe this pleasure?”
“I brought you sickness survival essentials,” you say, dangling the bag on two fingers between you. “Just in case.”
He gets that look on his face you’re finding yourself on the receiving end of more and more. That You can be so lovely face. Like you’ve done something selfless, and he’s not deserving of it. “Thank you,” he says genuinely, quietly, slipping the bag from your hand and leaning in. You’re expecting the kiss on the cheek, just not the hand under your jaw turning you for a chaste one on the lips.
“Listen,” he says softly, “my mum is here.”
You pause. “Oh.”
“My dad, too, actually. She caught wind that I was feeling rough from Sirius and she’s brought it upon herself to come and make sure I’m alright.”
“Oh. Well, well I’ll just go–”
He shakes his head. “Don’t go. I mean, you don’t have to stay, ‘course you don’t, but you can come in and meet them.”
“As…”
“What do you want to be?” he asks.
It’s probably written all over your face exactly what you want to be to James. It’s the bag swinging from his elbow. It’s what he asked you not so long ago, sitting on the end of his bed with a puddle of nerves in your stomach. Do you want to be… this is the real thing, right?
You didn’t know what to say, so you’d kissed him, and he’d known it wasn’t a yes or no.
“Are you sure you want them to meet me?” you ask.
“Yes.” He strokes your cheek with his forefinger, all gentleness, but then he gives it a squeeze. “Be warned, mum’s heard everything about you, even when I was sure I hated you.”
“What if she doesn’t like me?” you ask, sickly.
“She took your side every time,” he assures you. “I just mean she’ll give me a smug look every other minute. And my dad’s just happy to be wherever he is. But if you don’t want to… you know, if you’re not ready, that’s fine. I wasn’t gonna ask ‘cos I was worried you’d say no.” He winces.
“I’m really worried they won’t like me.”
“Why wouldn’t they?” he asks, as though the possibility is a pipe dream.
“James, you didn’t like me.”
“That had less to do with you and more to do with email politics,” he jokes, “lovely, you don’t have to come in. It’s fine, there’ll be other times.”
It’s his confidence in that that makes you take a step forward. “Do I look a mess?”
“You’re beautiful.”
“James, I just went to work, I’ve been up since six–” You give him you’re most pleading look, eyebrows soft and lips a little pouted, “please, just check.”
James holds you by the shoulders, his gaze moving over you one feature at a time. “Still beautiful,” he says quietly, “you have something in the corner of your eye.”
“Get it.”
“I will,” he laughs, “just gimme a second.”
You gasp as he almost pokes your eye out.
“James, babe, who’s at the door?”
You’re surprised to hear a male voice and instantly endeared. James, babe, turns away from you, slipping a hand behind your shoulder to force you into the hallway next to him. A dark-haired older man is standing in the door to the kitchen, his smile curious and friendly. “James?”
“Yeah, this is Y/N,” James says, “she was just making sure I’m okay.”
“You've invited her in for a cup of tea?” Monty asks, a picture of his son as he gestures for the kitchen.
“Tea?” James asks, watching you carefully.
You attempt to hide your nerves with a nod and a smile of your own. “Yes, please.”
Monty heads back into the kitchen. James runs his hand down your back and lets you step in front of him, bearing the brunt of his mother’s gaze all by yourself. “Hello,” she says, clearly excited.
“Hi.”
James holds you by the back. “Mum, dad,” —you suck in a breath— “this is Y/N. She’s my girlfriend but” He raises his voice before Euphemia can talk. “It’s not been long, okay?”
“James, why didn’t you say?”
“Mum, I just–” James sighs. You go numb with the pleasure of the thing —you weren’t expecting him to say girlfriend. To own up to you completely. “You dropped in unannounced, and we aren’t telling very many people.”
“It’s my fault, I didn’t say–” You start, tamping down a brilliant smile.
Monty cuts you off swiftly. “Don’t worry about it, sweetheart. We’re all here now, aren’t we? So, you work with Jamie?”
“Yeah, yes, I’m on the accounting team.” You relax into James’ touch, letting your shoulder be guided against him just a bit. “I started a couple of months ago.”
“Almost a year ago,” James corrects. “Should we have that cup of tea?”
You frown at the scratch of his voice. “I can make it,” you offer.
Euphemia laughs, James groans, and Monty has a twinkle in his eye you aren’t familiar with. “I can make the tea,” Monty says, “why don’t you lovely ladies sit down?”
“Does that include me, dad?”
“Of course it does.”
