this is a culture, in most western countries' urban/suburban areas, where pickpocketing was basically a sport. and you're going to go around with all your personal effects dangling on the outside of your skirt??? people weren't stupid back then, on the whole

I mean sure it's usually just sewing tools, a memorandum book and pencil, and a perfume vial. but some of those could be pretty valuable- and I've seen ones with little mesh purses, as if for change!

chatelaines MUST have been an Indoor Thing, right?

(but then why the change-purses, is the question? you don't exactly need to buy a lot of things around the house. were the purses in fact NOT intended for hanging on a chatelaine, but rather pinning to the inside of a skirt pocket or something, to deter theft? was that a style choice for days when you were going shopping with a carriage? I have Many Questions)

EDIT: some folks have theorized that the change-purses were for things one needed to buy at the door- paying for milk/egg/butter/cream delivery, tipping errand-boys, knife-sharpening, etc. I don't know if the nightsoil man was paid at the door or if that was settled up with the city, when/where that was a thing, but that could be another possibility for Things That Require Small Change In The House. thanks for the good thought, guys!

One thing I’ve always found interesting is that Rick never really showed us the bridge between Percabeth being just friends to being in a serious relationship. A few little moments in The Staff of Hermes were the closest we got. Like, we see them say “I love you” to each other a few times throughout Heroes of Olympus, but it’s never implied that those were the first times they said it. Which means before TLH even starts, the two of them have gotten to that point. But In Staff of Hermes (which takes place a month into their relationship), they’re still in that slightly awkward phase of their relationship—you know, where they’re super into each other and obviously enjoying the perks of being a couple (aka making out), but haven’t quite settled into that groove of mature, comfortable romance yet. But by the time Percy gets kidnapped (just three months later), they clearly have found that groove, which is evident the second they reunite in MoA, because they’re totally at ease with each other, affectionate, and intimate in a way that supports the implication that those “I love you’s” I mentioned have already been exchanged. So it just makes me wonder when that shift happened? At what point in those three short months did they go from “I’m just happy we’re still together, honestly” to “I'm in love with you, and this is forever"?

Ugh, what I would give to see how they were right before Percy got kidnapped. Still holding on to a bit of that teenage casualness that disappeared during their 6 month separation, but also hopelessly in love and finally open and comfortable with it. URRGGGHHH!!!!

Sae Niijima is such a good character it drives me insane a little. She's not a mother nor a maternal or doting older sister but instead a twenty four year old who was thrown into a position of responsibility that she never asked for. She loves Makoto just as much as she resents her and its so apparent every time they talk up until November. "Are you studying?" (I want you to do well) (I need you to get a job and stop making my life harder) "I'll use any method necessary to get this promotion" (Life will be easier for us) (So stop distracting me with your problems) "Focus on your future" (I know that you're capable) (I can't afford to waste my time on you, so stop wasting time on others)

Makoto is not only the sole reason she pushes as hard as she does for a promotion, for success, and the reason that she loses herself in her animosity over her fathers death, but also someone she can't stand for so long. Makoto was 14-15 when their father died. Sae was 21. As soon as she got the career she wanted and things started to look up, her stability was robbed from her and she was disillusioned with the system that her father had taught her to rely on and completely adhere to. How do you manage, the daughter of a cop, following his footsteps towards law enforcement, when you're suddenly reminded of how unfair it is? You can't quit, your little sister relies on you and she's so young and struggling just as badly with this grief. So you pick yourself up and you get moving again. You push harder, press further. You abandon your morals and your ethics because punishing criminals (guilty or not) is almost like punishing the man who killed your father.

And the whole time she's fighting for promotions, going for drinks with the SIU Director to make herself more favourable for promotions, trying to navigate being a woman in a competitive, suffocating, male-dominated field, falling behind despite doing so much where others are promoted for doing so little - all the while your little sister comes back from school and her biggest issues are so small compared to yours.

Persona 5 revolves so heavily around grief and loss and change and Sae embodies all of that so well, all of the sharp and unpleasant and jagged parts of grief.

On one hand, Young Justice is kind of neglected by the actual superheroes that should be looking out for them in a lot of crucial ways and very much failed by the adults around them

But on the other hand Red Tornado straight up hosts a parent-teacher conference where their respective legal guardians all show up, barring Batman who’s in traffic so Nightwing fills in instead because Robin’s dad does not know he’s a vigilante which is objectively hilarious

mmm throwaway conversation between Dan and Danny that popped into my head that I had to write out:

"You spent ten years being a one-man mass extinction event, then went back in time and fought me, and lost." Danny snarls, arms crossed and throat tight. His mouth pulls back to bare dagger-sharp teeth, and his eyes burn with the familiar thrum of ectoplasm heating up behind his eyes. "If I didn't believe you were half of Vlad before, I do now."

His other self -- and really, can he even call him that? He's half of Vlad too. Two halves severed from each other and welded together to make a new whole, -- snaps his head over to him. Wild-eyed and furious, he looks unlike the man Danny fought before, the one unruffled and untouched, unbothered by the world around him. It's familiar, but not like the way a reflection is.

"What's that supposed to mean." The Other hisses, matching Danny's scowl one-for-one with fangs much bigger and sharper than his.

But there's a reason lions fear hyenas. Danny matches the rumble in The Other's chest with one of his own, and shoves his face close to his. "I don't lose."

saw this, and the text about error made me think- if nightmare insulted error in spanish, he would know from all his hours watching undernovela. maybe he wouldnt be able to translate it, but he'd definitely have picked up on some fighting words.

if he HAS actually learned some though, he could pull the power move at throwing spanish insults back at him. if he can pull nightmares mom into it too, we're getting into a fistfight for sure lol

Nightmare is definitely fluent on the other hand (his native language), and I can see him getting so frustrated he just switches to Spanish, Error would definitely pick up on insults if they do happen and he definitely wouldn’t shy away from insulting back

The image of Error pulling Nightmare’s mom into it is hilarious and very much possible fhhchchchf

Whenever you start playing with your hair a bit too much as a way of stimming, and ripping off individual strands in the process- when Kaiser catches sight, he grabs your hand and yanks it off your hair basically.

Not so graciously nor bluntly bringing it over to himself and shoving into his hair in a ‘here’. When you tried asking about it the first few times, he scoffs and says it’s distracting from his peripheral- and annoying, he adds, as if this is important for you to know.

So, long before you’ve stopped asking the whys and slowly learnt to let it out like that, fingers scratching against his skull, applying pressure and flowing between the strands up and down.

The action working as intended, you never really pay attention to anything else after, or to how it almost resembles mindlessly petting a cat— and sure, it is annoying to see someone raise their arm all the way up and play with their hair in the same position for hours uninterrupted. But he cannot really deny; it feels good to have this type of contact, to be touched and petted— not that he’ll ever tell you but it’s another crumb he’ll take.

there's something about garrus and shepard admitting to each other that the worst thing about the end of the world would've been facing it apart. they've been to hell and back, they know there's nothing they can't do together. in the first conversation back on the normandy, garrus says "if this ends with us dying in a giant explosion taking out a reaper, remember that i took the killshot." even if they die, it's obviously going to be together. where else would either of them be?

he tells her he always knew he'd see the normandy again. his faith never wavers. if anyone can do this it's her. and he's got her back. no matter what. no shepard without vakarian, all the way back to earth, all the way through london. and then at the last possible moment, they get separated and have to face the end of the war alone. stranded lightyears apart, no way to know if the other survived.

but they both do and after a lot of recovery and probably some therapy they retire somewhere warm and tropical where they can enjoy their lives together in peace :)

Something I wish more people understood is that optimism and kindness are a choice.

For some people that choice comes more naturally than others. In some situations that choice is easier to make. But even if you're naturally inclined to be kind and optimistic, there will be times when it's a real struggle to not just wallow in the misery, or to be a petty ass gremlin to someone. When it takes real effort to not just take the easy option, because you know it will not help, or will even make stuff worse in the long run.

On the flip side for those who it doesn't come naturally, who really need to work on it, they still can and often do choose both kindness and optimism. Because no matter the difficulty level, it improves your overall quality of life and that of those around you.

Also, choosing kindness is not faking things. If you do kind things you are a kind person, whether you have to actively chose it or not. There is no difference to those you were kind to whether or not you had to think about the action, or if it just happened automatically. You still treated them kindly, and that is what they'll remember. It will mean more than you might think.

The good news is that it's a muscle you can train. The more you forge those pathways in your brain, the easier they are to walk. Where one day you may find that while you may never be a fully natural optimistic kind person, you can pretty well imitate one, and that's all that matters.

Kindness and optimism are a choice and you always get to choose it.
