Dreaming up Vulcan genders so complicated that perhaps I should just make up my own aliens...

Gender is such a fascinating thing. It has biological, social, and psychological elements. To be reductionist, it's about how you fit into society and specifically your family group. Which means one thing evolutionarily, and another once it's codified and fenced about with rules. It's evolutionarily useful to have adults that don't procreate. Culturally, we can ignore that, codify it, or anything in between.

Human society for the most part created a construct which snips off all the complications and dictates exactly two genders. A few cultures talk about something more complicated.

But once you imagine alien species, it's obvious that none of what we have on Earth is inevitable.

Aliens could be biologically different, for one thing. They might all reproduce in the same way (one sex) or they might have many different roles in reproduction (3+ sexes). Or they might be eusocial, like bees. Eusocial animals have what could very well be described as several sexes: we have the single reproducing female, multiple reproducing males, and several non-reproducing sexes which aid in the survival of the colony in absolutely non-optional ways.

Then we have to think what cultural constructs would surround that. We take our cultural basis, apply it to bees, and see males and several kinds of females. (We also imagine a monarchy. Funny, that.) So aliens could absolutely do the same. Two genders, even though within each gender are dramatic differences in roles and biology. Or they could imagine a dozen genders based on what role in society you end up having, even if some of those genders aren't actually biologically different. Because society is a funny thing and we have a way of pattern-matching to whatever strikes us as the standard.

I've read several fics lately where there are gender reversals (males taking the role of human women under patriarchy) and interesting kinds of what we would think of as trans identities. And those fics just make me gnaw the bars of my enclosure demanding more.

This past week I made up the idea of nine Vulcan genders: two parent types, two priest/ruler types, two kinds of gay soldiers, lesbian huntress, lesbian guardian of wells, and monk. Are any of those remotely valid in post-reform Vulcan? Perhaps not, but now there's a whole cultural construct based on it, so it's sticky like our gender roles are sticky even if we are told we no longer have to follow them.

But that only made me want to go further, do more. What if the genders weren't just four types of woman, four types of man, and one nonbinary type? What if they were actually physically different? What if they evolved that way to a purpose? What kind of love stories do they cry about? What would queerness look like to them; what kind of rebellions might they have against the structures of their society?

That is so extremely my thing. But at some point it stops really being Vulcans and starts being My Personal Bee Aliens so I may save it for a novel where I'm not hemmed in by what happened at the kalifee in Amok Time.

I guess I would be a failure as an author if I didn't mention my book where there are three sexes and they can also change them easily. But lately I feel I didn't take it far enough. I could have been weirder.

I have a persistent headcanon that Liara, in their last encounter, made herself pregnant with Shepard's kid.

Mind you, I have a TON of questions about alien anatomy in that series, just because of all the cross-species pairings possible. Like, it's not unreasonable to assume thay Quarians give birth through something near the bellybutton analog instead of something located on the pelvis. Do Turians lay eggs? How do you sexually stimulate an Asari, anyway?

Things are left vague enough that you're left to fill in the blanks with blue vulva and thulium-carapaced dicks, and wonder what quarians look like under their suits, but, dammit, a man's mind just has to wonder if asari even NEED to shit, much less have buttholes.

Speaking of xenosex, how many asari have quarian parents, do you think? Aethyta on Illium mentions that a lot of people don't remember what they look like under the suit, but, really, I'm guessing more than a few have embraced eternity, both before and after the Geth.

The heart-shaped balloon symbolizes the "Love Me" album and also the concept of attaction. The red of the flag represents attraction, and the gray gradient represents the gray aroace spectrum, as this could fall under it since this xenosexuality denotes an attraction related to an object and/or concept.

A Mission Statement: Why “Exolytic” and “Erosyne”?

This terminology was born out of longing—both spiritual and personal. I coined exolytic and erosyne to name a form of love I did not see reflected in existing language. A love that is more than romantic, more than sexual, and far beyond conventional definitions of identity or orientation.

I needed language for a love that unravels the Self, that dissolves the line between giver and receiver, that is ecstatic and terrifying and sacred. A love rooted not in possession, but in coalescence. Not in security, but in annihilation. A love impossible to exit once entered, a union that destabilizes and transforms all who participate. Something distinct, that pre-existing Human notions of "love" have failed to encapsulate.

“Exolytic” means “that which dissolves from the outside.” It is love as a solvent. As collapse. As sacred intimacy that burns the ego away to reveal the Sovereign within.

“Erosyne” is its grammar. A mode of being and loving that is sensual, relational, and ritualistic—where love is a veil and a mirror, a wound and a thread. It is the love that dares to lose itself. It is the yearning that teaches transcendence.

This is not about fitting into existing labels, but about making space for those of us whose relationships are spiritual, overwhelming, ruinous, and holy. For those whose experiences of love blur the lines between mysticism, madness, passion, and prayer. For those who know that the deepest intimacy begins where the Self ends.

Exolytic love is not merely a feeling—it is a mode of being, an orientation in and of itself. A dynamic current of surrender, interpenetration, and sacred unraveling that transcends ego and ordinary intimacy. It threads through annihilation, veiling, sovereignty, and the mutual remaking of selves. To express this inner architecture in shared visual language, the following symbols have been chosen.

The primary sigil of Exolytic love. Evokes paradox, folding time, and the ever-turning spiral of veiling and unveiling. A visual shorthand for union that annihilates.

Symbol of sacred ambiguity, chosen performance, and the divine theatre of selfhood. To love through masks is not to lie—it is to reveal with intention.

FLAG COLOR MEANINGS: all of the flags are based on these common pride flags, so those colors mean the same as they do originally. the black and white stripes represent black and white thinking, and they grey represents disconnection from neurotypical gender attraction. these lables are exclusive to autistic people, whether or not they are aroace or alloallo, the flags arent specific to just sexual or romantic attraction. i tried to make these as inclusive for ppl who arent a binary gender as i could.
