I'm just like. Tired. I'm tired of things I enjoy being turned into movies. I'm tired of everything being so monetized. I'm tired of feeling like every moment of my life is considered ad space.

Thoughts on what has been revealed so far for the Zelda movie?
They're going for live action instead of animation, and the only Hollywood names attached right now are the director of the Maze Runner movies, one of the writers for the Jurassic World trilogy, and one of the architects of the Sony Spider-Man Universe (who was also the guy who forced Sam Raimi to put Venom in Spider-Man 3). All signs are pointing towards it being another lackluster video game movie that everyone forgets about a month after release
I mean, I'd love to be wrong! It'd be great to have a good Zelda movie. The director has apparently wanted to do a Zelda movie for years, so that's something. But I don't see any point in getting my hopes up, especially when it's still several years away. If it actually looks good when they release the first trailer, great, but until then it's not something that needs to take up space in my brain

Cole Sprouse and Kathryn Newton Are the Screen Duo We've Been Waiting For (via WhoWhatWear)
Tumblr media
Full interview under the cut.
When I click into my Zoom meeting with Cole Sprouse and Kathryn Newton, they're already debriefing about the SAG Awards Season Celebration party they attended the night prior with their Hollywood peers, dishing on who left when and how the night ended up. In that moment, I wished I could toss out the questions I'd prepared for them and just be a fly on the wall listening to their banter. If I didn't know any better, I'd assume the two have been working alongside each other for years based on the inside jokes and heartfelt compliments being tossed back and forth. In reality, the forthcoming comedy horror flick Lisa Frankenstein (in theaters February 9) marks the first time the actors are sharing the screen, and it's a duo so good it hopefully won't be the last.
The two have had parallel paths in the industry, something they admit to bonding over on set. Both came up in Hollywood as child actors, Sprouse from age 1 and Newton from age 4. They're each well-versed in the YA genre: Sprouse, of course, is a Disney Channel alum who starred in The Suite Life of Zack and Cody before graduating to a high schooler in the hit CW series Riverdale and featuring in rom-coms Moonshot and Five Feet Apart. For her part, Newton played the lead in Amazon's The Map of Tiny Perfect Things and a teen in Netflix's The Society. Whether because of or despite their career longevity, both have noteworthy side hustles outside of acting—Sprouse's esteemed photography portfolio and Newton's successful golf career. The commonalities run deep, yet in many ways, the two are opposites. Sprouse is cerebral and loquacious, while Newton strikes me as bouncy and lighthearted. Newton is perched in a pink sweat set with bow-adorned Ugg boots, her three poodles tip-tapping lightly in the background. Sprouse wears backless New Balance sneakers that he refers to as "dad mode" and admits to playing the video game Rogue Trader at his desk before our call. Despite these differences, their chemistry as co-workers and friends is palpable both on and off the screen.
This immediately became apparent a few scenes into Lisa Frankenstein, which has all the makings of the next cult horror flick. Set in the '80s, the classic coming-of-age story follows an angsty teen (Newton) and her love interest (Sprouse), who just so happens to be a corpse from the Victorian era. The film was written by Diablo Cody, the mastermind behind iconic camp titles such as Jennifer's Body and Juno, and directed by Zelda Williams (her dad is Robin Williams—maybe you've heard of him?) in her directorial debut. Lisa Frankenstein is 120 minutes of belly-laughing, jaw-dropping ridiculousness—a guaranteed wild ride from start to finish.
When they weren't dressed in '80s prom and Victorian-era attire respectively, I got caught up with Newton and Sprouse fresh off the set of our January cover shoot and on the precipice of a booming post-strike award season. The mid-20s actress and early-30s actor collectively have more TV and movie credits under their belts than some career actors double their age but none of the pretentiousness. They were eager to discuss their longevity in the industry and express gratitude toward the high school–aged roles that got them to where they are now. Whether it's '80s fashion, careers outside of acting, or getting to work with your best friends, it's impossible not to get excited by Sprouse and Newton when they're geeking out about what they love.
First of all, I'm so excited about the whole vision of this cover shoot with the retro car, the trunk luggage, and the Bonnie and Clyde references. How do you think the shoot went?
Kathryn Newton: First of all, Cole is the consummate professional because he's always just down to play. He doesn't say no to anything. [He does] the "yes, and…" thing. So together, like you see in the movie, we really go there. We just had a lot of fun. We leaned into the clothes, the sets, and the creative direction. Cole and I were just fully in Bonnie and Clyde mode, looking over our shoulders and pretending to be in love.
Cole Sprouse: I always geek out when I get to work with photographers [I admire], too, because we just sit and chat about cameras and whatnot. It's easy when you're working with someone like Kathryn, who's also just capable of pulling out the character stuff immediately. I think being an actor on that side of the camera is always a lot of play. It's always a collaboration between the people that are being shot and the photographer—the subjects have to push themselves a little bit if the shots are really going to turn out well. It's easy when you already have a rapport with the person you're being shot with, to just push it a little.
Cole, you've also built a photography career for yourself, so being that you're often the one behind the camera on fashion shoots, has that altered your experience of being the subject when it comes to promoting your own projects?
CS: I'm a big believer in every department just doing what they're trained and good at. I find the more that you try to be hands-on if your role is a bit more passive, the worse the shots turn out. If you're in front of the camera, just play and go. If it doesn't work, it doesn't work, and the photographer will know almost immediately. For me, it doesn't really feel weird. It's just the difference between if I want to be in a more passive or a more active role.
KN: I was wondering if being a photographer helps you create a shot. With some of these pictures, if the composition is right, the way you're posing is right, and the angle is better, it makes the image better. I feel like there are no guys who know their angles. You know how to make a shot a photograph. It was cinematic. There's an energy there. You're telling a lot of a story in the pictures with me but also in the solo ones I saw of you, like the one of you running. I love that one.
CS: Look, I don't hold back anything for the photo. It was hot out that day, and they put me in some shorts, which is a rare occasion. It's very rare to see Cole Sprouse in some shorts.
See that, people? You're getting an exclusive on Cole Sprouse's knees! Well, I'm excited to dive into Lisa Frankenstein because the movie had me laughing out loud. I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it. How did you both get involved with the project to begin with? What were your initial thoughts?
KN: I had a Zoom with our director, Zelda Williams, and I remember being really inspired after getting off the phone with her. She sounded like she was a risk-taker. She was encouraging me because one of my biggest fears of the movie is the fact that my amazing co-star Cole Sprouse doesn't speak. I was like, "What are we supposed to do here? How are we going to make a movie?" Then it was pretty much a no-brainer after reading screenwriter Diablo Cody's script. She can do no wrong, and it was just so exciting and delicious and fun. It was nothing like what I thought the movie was going to be, nor was it anything like what we shot, so I was pleasantly blown away.
What would you say surprised you the most?
KN: I would say it was about how big my character became. I thought my character was the quiet one and soon realized you can't be the quiet one since Cole's character doesn't speak. It changed everything. I watched She-Devil and Death Becomes Her to get some inspiration and learn to take up space. But I wouldn't have been able to do it without Cole. It felt like we were all one—Zelda, Cole, and I. We were all on the same page.
Cole, you basically have zero lines in the movie save for a few animated grunts. In fact, your character isn't even granted a name. You're only referred to as "Creature" when the credits roll. You've known director Zelda Williams for a while, and with this being her directorial debut, what were some of those early conversations like?
CS: Those [grunts] weren't even part of the original [script]! Those were [improvised] on the day of. For me personally, I was excited to shut the hell up. I was like, "Damn, I've done a lot, a lot of talking over the last five, six years. What would happen if I didn't do any of that?" The script presented the challenge of needing a really strong female lead and a strong female lead that had a solid sense of humor. Kathryn came up because I had known Kathryn for a couple of years. Zelda and I put our heads together and were like, "Alright, are we going to beg? What are we going to do here to try and secure the Kathryn bag?" When she got on board, we knew that this was really going to work. Diablo's writing is like bubble gum. It's really big, but it requires delivery that is authentic and genuine in order to work, so you need someone that has a sense of timing and a sense of humor. Kathryn immediately brought the life that we needed with it.
Had you been a fan of Diablo Cody's work for a while?
KN: Jennifer's Body was the first horror film I ever saw. It blew my mind. It's still one of my favorite horror films. I've seen it a million times, and the soundtrack is on my phone. I was really nervous to meet Diablo because she's the mastermind behind it, and I didn't want to let her down. But she really handed it off and gave us the freedom. Even though Cole doesn't speak, the way he had created this character, no one could have done it the way he did with such care and grace. It's a really big honor to be a part of her Diablo universe.
Was there anything that you both had to do specifically to prepare for your respective roles? For you, Cole, it seems to be a lot of body language. For you, Kathryn, it feels a lot more about hitting the right tone with the lines and bringing that lightheartedness into it.
CS: I worked with a movement coach for three months. He was a mime, which I thought was a fun way to play with [my character's] voicelessness. He is a great dude. He drives a car that has a license plate that just says speechless, which I thought was really hilarious. We built on a lot of Buster Keaton, the old silent-movie stars. The groaning came later when we were on set. That felt like a character that was really desperately trying to speak.
So the grunting was something you just improvised?
CS: Yeah, after many years of smoking cigarettes, I can croak. Gravelly voice? I was like, "Alright, cigarettes are gonna make you some money. Silver lining. Let's go."
I know that you two had worked with each other prior to Lisa Frankenstein when Cole shot you, Kathryn, for a spread that ended up in Interview magazine in 2020. Was that the first time you two met?
KN: I actually met Zack and Cody ages ago. I was probably 8, and they must have been, I don't know, 12. I was at Bob's Big Boy, and they were in their booth, and I got a picture with them. [As for the shoot,] it was actually just a shoot we did in my house. That's when we made magic. We got couture gowns from Valentino. My amazing hairstylist Renato brought all these wigs. I really think it was a precursor to Lisa Frankenstein because it was a very camp shoot. I had all these ideas about how the character was a woman who kills all her husbands, and she's really wealthy now with all her poodles. The photos are some of my favorite photos ever taken of me. It was just [Cole] and his camera—really low-key.
CS: When Kathryn went, "I have three poodles," I thought, "I can go with this."
KN: He didn't ask for my dogs' availability call. You can't afford them, but they would have done it for free.
CS: Next time I need three poodles, I'll let you know.
In general, you're both used to playing these younger characters who are often in high school. What is it about these kinds of roles that draws you in? Do you feel nostalgic for your own high school experience? Do you feel like you get to go back and rewrite the script a bit?
KN: I think that there is an element of rewriting the script to do things you wouldn't have done in your real life. For me, though, the young audience is the most important one because they're going to continue to grow with me, and I want to continue to grow with them. I do projects because I feel like no one else can do them. I just hope that the audience does like [Lisa Frankenstein]. It's a coming-of-age story, but something that we haven't seen in a while. This one, in particular, gave me a lot of nostalgia for the movies I grew up with that are colorful and bright—[the movies where] you lean in and you don't ask too many questions. You just go on a wild ride and are entertained.
CS:  I think I've just aged. For a while, yeah, for sure. But at 31 and playing a teen? It's just not as believable as it once was. I would be so lucky, though. I would be so lucky to play high school my whole life!
I think that's a good point to bring up. Cole, you just wrapped seven seasons of Riverdale, where you were on location in Canada for many months on end and many seasons on end. Do you feel ready to "grow up" as far as your next characters are concerned?
CS: I get this question a lot. To be honest, I don't think about it too much. I think there are really compelling parts all over the age map. The more that you build an idea and aim for it professionally, the less it comes true. The one thing I will say is that I would love to shoot in California. Yeah, that's the manifestation I'm trying to put out. Right down the street at the studio complexes. Come home for lunch to my own house.
Do you hear that, universe? Manifesting it for you, Cole. Well, I'm curious. Age aside, what are the things about the projects you take on that you're like, "Oh my gosh, yes." Is it something in particular or more of a gut feeling? I feel like for you, Kathryn, you've had such a great breadth of projects, from critically acclaimed titles like Three Billboards and Big Little Lies to Marvel movies. Is there anything that stands out in the process of choosing the roles?
KN: The thing that stands out to me is, What am I going to get to bring to this role? Who are the people I'm going to surround myself with? What kind of conversations are we going to have on set to make this story? My process for roles hasn't really changed much. It's always been, What can I do for this movie? The second thing is, Who am I gonna get to hang out with every day?
I want to get into the fashion in the movie because I feel like it's so good. Your looks really capture the '80s perfectly, but I also feel like you are so comfortable in this aesthetic. What were some of the references that you brought forth? Do you create a mood board before a project like this?
KN:  [The costume designer Meagan McLaughlin] brought along actual vintage from her own closet, but then to supplement, we went to Hot Topic, obviously. I like a fit-and-flare on camera. I find silhouettes beautiful from old movies like Bringing Up Baby and Breakfast at Tiffany's, so I wanted that kind of silhouette because I thought that was very camp to have me always in a shirt and a skirt cinched at the waist. We see her character progress from wearing big gaucho pants to leaning into her powerful femininity. … When she becomes the most monstrous is when she's in her cutest outfit, in my opinion.
Both of you have these amazing creative outlets that you've cultivated outside of your acting. Kathryn, you are an avid golfer working with the LPGA and R&A, and you're competing and crushing it, which is so amazing. Cole, your photography, I would say, seems to be your biggest focus outside of acting. I see that a bit more with you two than with other actors in your peer group. Are these passions as necessary to your creative life as acting is?
KN: In life, you're always told you can only be one thing. I'm a golfer who acts, and sometimes, I'm an actor who golfs. If I'm not working, I go play golf with my dad on the weekend. … I just did a movie in Ireland, and one of the producers was a big golfer, so every other weekend, I got to go to these beautiful places in the country and play these incredible golf courses. I'm trying to create a space in this golf world for more accessibility for young people not to just start playing but to continue to be golfers their whole lives because it's been such a gift [for me]. It's given me a lot of confidence.
CS: You're talking to actors that were also kid actors, right? I think that comes along with a perspective on acting that is understanding it's a job. It's a financial pursuit alongside a kind of artistic pursuit. For me, the photography thing was one area where I could flex my own creative control in a much more active way alongside an acting career that you can't predict the future of and one where there's not a lot of security. I need to do something outside of this other arena if I'm going to have a healthy relationship to work. I'm a huge proponent of actors having another career alongside acting.
To your point, you've both been acting from such a young age. Cole, you've been vocal about the fact that it wasn't always a choice. It was often out of financial necessity. Kathryn, you've likewise been in the industry since you were 4. How does that influence your current approach?
CS: When a lot of people talk about acting, they talk about the beauty and the passion of acting, and they forget that it's also a job. The healthiest relationship is somewhere in the middle, where you can go, "Alright, I ideally want to do one for me and one for the coffers."
KN: We found a lot of common ground, and we had some amazing discussions about it on [the set of] Lisa Frankenstein. I felt like I was so similar in my approach, where we take it seriously, but we don't identify with it. I've been an actress since I was 4. Every experience I had has been like candy. It's just been fun. I went to real school my whole life, so there was this experience of "Is school real, or is the job that I'm on set for real?" Neither one of them felt like reality. I was class president, and I did the commencement speech and everything. I loved school and being a kid who was super uncool and then going to set and shooting 15-hour days and then going back to school and having to take five tests. These are the things that have made me who I am, and I wouldn't change anything.
I can't help but think that this mindset is really unique to folks like you who have been doing this job for so many years. It's essentially the defining experience of your life. Did you ever look back and maybe feel any type of resentment or regret about the way that the industry made you grow up quicker and faster than kids your own age?
CS: Great question. I don't hold resentment. It comes with an incredible amount of privilege, and also, you do kind of know what you're signing up for. I might not have had as much agency over career decisions as a kid, but it made complete and logical sense at the time as to why we were doing the thing that we were doing.
KN: What's funny is I feel like I'm just getting started all the time. Every time I finish a project, I feel like I'm never going to work again. To piggyback on what Cole is saying, the longer you do it, the less you need to do your job. I don't need anything to do my scene. I don't need a coffee. I don't need five minutes to get ready. If you say "action," I'm ready. [Cole is similar to me in that way.] I wonder if it's because we did grow up as child actors. The roles have required more of me as I've matured simply with age and material. Now, the material just asks more of you. I feel like I'm just getting started because now I'm at a new level.
I want to pivot a little to the topic of your relationship to the fashion world. You're both regulars at fashion week—Kathryn, I know you're a Ralph Lauren girl, and Cole, you attended your fair share of spring/summer 2024 shows during Paris Fashion Week as well. Is this a world that you are actively trying to further yourself in?
KN: I'm just constantly inspired. Cole is someone who I think has an amazing personal style. He says something with his looks. I don't think any of it is on accident.
What are some of the brands that you would say you have the best relationships with and that are the ones you keep coming back to in terms of your personal style?
CS: I like brands that are … unabashedly moving in a very particular direction. I think Versace leans into decadence and opulence in a really cool way unashamedly. I think Demna with Balenciaga is doing something really fun by not taking itself too seriously and creating a self-awareness that can be self-deprecating, which is so on-brand for me.
I am so excited to see what you both will pull out for the press tours for this movie. What are some of the conversations and themes that are being thrown around? Are either of you working with a stylist for your press outings?
KN: I know Zelda and I are contemplating if we all wear the same suit to the premiere or whether I should dress up as Lisa or if we should both dress up as Lisa and wear the wigs. I have a lot of vintage archival pieces that are from either the Versace 1997 collection or Chanel 1984. I'm in constant flux of whether I should just be myself and wear my own stuff or wear what's new. But I think vintage for this movie is where my heart's at. I think it's time to pull out the big pieces.
CS: I don't normally [work with a stylist], no. That's the first time on a press tour that I'm not working with a stylist. I actually feel way more confident when I'm just going into my own personal closet and throwing on what I wear.
Wait, I'm honestly shocked by that. I was expecting both of you to say that you work with a stylist—if not in an everyday capacity, then at least for red carpet outings.
CS: The beauty of the relationships that I think Kathryn and I both have to these certain brands now is that we can go, "Hey, I have this thing coming up."
KN: When I was 14 for the Bad Teacher premiere, I used all my money and bought a Valentino dress. I didn't know the rules that you can ask a brand for an outfit, right? So the person I bought the dress from was like, "You need to know [publicist] Katie Goodwin." So then, Katie met me, and she invited me to the Valentino show, where [Creative Director] Pierpaolo [Piccioli] knew the dress. I wore it again to my prom. It paid off so much that I just liked fashion and Valentino. Well, you've seen my looks. Valentino has been a huge part of my fashion story.
What a full-circle moment. I love how genuinely that relationship started for you. Clearly, you have such a good eye. Well, as much as I could keep chatting with you two for another several hours, I realize I've kept you way over our allotted time, and you've let me!
CS: You have some really great questions. I feel bad for you because you're gonna have to find a way to condense all of this.

2023 Gaming Wrap-Up
Welcome back to what is apparently a yearly tradition on this blog: the Gaming Wrap-Up! As we drag ourselves to the end of 2023, it’s always good to take a look back at the last 12 months and try to figure out just what was going on there. And well, this year…kinda sucked. It had a lot going on - it was stressful and exhausting at best for so many of us, but there’s always a bit of good within the bad (for example, on a more personal note, this was the year where I actually got a few of my articles purchased by publishers! Now I can, by definition, call myself a professional writer! Go me!), and video games are always an excellent escape from reality.   2023 had loads of great game releases, including some highly-anticipated sequels and remakes, while the business side of the gaming world had a fair few blunders and foot-shooting (Unity, anyone?). Before the end of the year, let’s all take a moment to remember all the highlights of the gaming world of 2023 - enjoy!
Tumblr media
JANUARY-MARCH    Let’s get started with a bit of the old and a bit of the new - a pair of high-quality remakes of some classic survival horror games, Dead Space and Resident Evil 4, set a new bar for gaming remakes, with RE4 even being nominated for GOTY! Meanwhile, Pizza Tower took the indie genre by storm with its deranged animations and surprisingly catchy music, and Hi-Fi Rush ambushed us with a sneaky release and some toe-tapping rhythmic combat.   Fans of classic Nintendo games had a bit of a sad start to the year however, with the announcement that Nintendo would be completely shutting down all online services for the 3DS and Wii U, basically pulling the life support plug on the two platforms for good. Additionally, the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) continues its streak of rough years; with X-Box, Sony and Nintendo all foregoing attendance, this years’ E3 was announced to be cancelled. With a rise in developers and publishers preferring digital and social media announcements over live shows thanks to the impact of COVID, could this be signalling the end of live gaming conventions like E3?
Tumblr media
APRIL-JUNE    Moving on, 2023 also saw the release of some particularly exciting sequels - Dead Island 2 finally released after 9 years in development hell while The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom blew its GOTY-winning predecessor out of the water. Street Fighter 6 brought in Metro City veterans and newcomers alike, and Star Wars: Jedi Survivor continued the tale of Cal Kestis in his battle against the Empire in a galaxy far, far away.   From the small screen to the big screen, The Super Mario Bros. Movie joined the small-but-growing ranks of video game movie adaptations that are actually good, thanks to staying true to the games’ actual identity instead of trying to turn it into something else like so many other game-to-film adaptations. E3’s cancellation also wasn’t enough to stop the Summer Games Fest from being held, featuring a mix of live and digital shows and announcements. Also, this year was quite the mixed bag for game publishing companies - Embracer Group, a publisher for major development teams such as Gearbox Entertainment and Crystal Dynamics, went under some massive structural changes due to a major deal falling through, and was just one of many publishers that underwent huge changes in 2023.
Tumblr media
JULY-SEPTEMBER    The latter half of the year didn’t see quite as many major game releases, but it was certainly a case of quality over quantity - Baldur’s Gate 3, an absolute narrative feat, practically overtook the entire second half of the year for both those familiar with the series or D&D and players entering the Forgotten Realms for the first time. Oh, and Starfield was released too.   Meanwhile, a cornerstone of video game voice acting, Charles Martinet, retired from voicing the Mario bros. Having provided the iconic voices of Mario, Luigi, Wario and Waluigi since 1994, Charles still works as a global ambassador for Nintendo in conventions across the world, while the superstar voice role would be taken over by Kevin Afghani later in the year.   Back in the business side of the gaming world, Unity - the group behind one of the most prominent game development engines in the industry - completely shot themselves in the foot this year as they announced an incredibly oppressive retroactive licensing fee to begin next year. This new fee would mean that every single developer that had ever used their engine would need to pay Unity for every copy of their game that has ever sold, even from before the fee took effect. Naturally, everyone disliked this, especially within the indie game community. The sheer amount of backlash caused Unity to rework the agreement to be “less aggressive”, but their reputation is beyond saving now.
Tumblr media
OCTOBER-DECEMBER    2023 looks to be closing off with a bang - in yet another major simultaneous release, October 20th saw Spider-Man 2 expand the urban playground of everyone’s favourite web-slinging duo while Super Mario Bros. Wonder brought Nintendo’s flagship franchise in a fresh new direction. Meanwhile, another highly anticipated sequel, Alan Wake II, spun a terrifying new narrative just in time for Hallowe’en.   Of course, the biggest talking point for the end of the year was the Game Awards! Baldur’s Gate 3 beat out some incredibly tough competition for Game of the Year and swept the rest of the awards alongside Alan Wake II; a handful of exciting new games were announced, including a sequel to the classic World of Goo and a vampire-hunting action adventure starring Marvel’s Blade; and we learned that the Call of Duty developers can’t take a joke. However, the biggest announcement arrived just before the awards, bringing the entire gaming community together for one of the most anticipated sequels in video game history (besides Half-Life 3): Grand Theft Auto VI. Set for a 2025 release, 12 years after its predecessor, GTA6 returns to the sunburnt beaches of Vice City, introducing a modern Bonnie & Clyde as its’ pair of playable protagonists Lucia and Jason.
Tumblr media
LOOKING FORWARD    So, aside from the GTA fans that are probably cryogenically freezing themselves until 2025, what are your plans for next year now that 2023 is nearly over? There’s plenty of other games to look forward to - Star Wars and Marvel fans will be getting another exciting set of games with Star Wars Outlaws putting players in the shoes of the galaxy’s next big name in the galactic underworld, while Wolverine will be hacking and slashing his way through the neon-lit Madripoor. Taking our hands off the controller for a moment, a handful of other games will be taking their turn on the silver screen with a promising-looking Fallout streaming series and a somewhat more sketchy-looking Borderlands film. Can’t be any worse than the Halo series, right…right?
I mentioned in last years’ wrap-up that 2023’s E3 is hopefully back on track, which has aged a bit poorly; well, there’s no need to worry about that this time as next year’s E3 has already been cancelled. At least that means saving on tickets, but is the age of big gaming conventions coming to a close? Time will tell, especially depending on if Summer Games Fest is still in the works. Maybe things are switching to a more digital-based platform for game announcements - as someone not fond of crowds, that suits me just fine.
But, hey, that’s not until next year. Until then, I hope you enjoyed this look back at the gaming world of 2023, and I look forward to seeing you all again in 2024!   Happy holidays!

Tbh I'm pretty sure the average gamer believes in trickle-down economics
(this is in regards to the "I'm shocked more gamers aren't anti-capitalist" post)
Now I don't necessarily think that's true either. In fact, I'd say the reason the game industry is the way it is has nothing to do with economic politics. I'd say that the average gamer - or nerd in general, really - is a spineless coward who's too addicted to the dopamine hit to actually stand for anything if their wants ever clash with their purported morals. And I fucking hate it.
I'm not just saying that because I'm bitter, although you could make a case that I am bitter. But I even live under a rock and I got ample examples. Look at how well games we know are low quality, games made under unquestionably awful crunch and/or other awful situations, etc... look how well they sell! BDSP and ScarVio sold like hotcakes and they're unquestionably bad games for a $60 price tag. Starfield - which I have heard NOTHING good about, and looks like absolute trash - is apparently Bethesda's "biggest launch to date." Somehow that fuckass Cyberpunk game is still relevant. People are actually still playing Overwatch 2 despite ... everything. These are just games I pulled off the top of my head while I'm still waking up. The fact these games are KNOWN to be shitty hasn't stopped them from selling.
Sure, a lot of people made a big fuss about not playing Hogwarts: Antisemitism Adventures, but they were talking smack because they never cared about the game in the first place. So it was never challenging their morals. Oh, sure, they told us how even PIRATING the game was bad, and that anyone who bought it (or even talked about it) was helping put money in transphobes' and nazis' pockets. How quick their tune changed when they actually wanted to see the FNAF movie - suddenly, giving money to people known to max out donations to republicans ain't so bad. They knew the right answer was to not see the movie, but like, they really really want to! If you told any of these people you donated $30 grand to multiple republicans they'd probably, rightfully, have nothing to do with you. But they neeeeeeeded to see their blorbos or they'd die :'( so this time it's OK!
Same with the Mario movie. We know Chris Pratt is a rightwing chud who ousted a long-standing legendary voice actor for the spot because he was a recognizable name. We knew the Mario movie was a shameless cashgrab and a metaphorical foot-testing-the-water for uninspired video game cashgrab movies. And the test was a success. YEAH. PEOPLE STILL SAW IT. Enjoy Chris Pratt - who hates you for thinking Link is trans - playing Link in The Movie of Zelda, coming out in Q4 2024.
I know a lot of these are left-leaning examples, but this isn't exclusive to left side gamers. How many times have you seen someone upset because Shooter Game Whatever had just the sliiiightest touch of left-ish stances, they'd take to whatever to complain. But they still be playing the game too.
It goes beyond just games tho, nerd culture is all the same. Let's also talk about Nerd Protests. And how they're the most self-affirming, hollow bullshit.
Like two years ago, Twitch was having some problems. And I'm not referring to them literally breaking a woman's back live on camera, which they did do, and never helped her, and you totally forgot about, because human suffering is nothing in the face of dopamine. No, I'm talking about A Day Off Twitch, in which streamers were encouraged to take a day off of streaming as protest towards.... something. I don't remember. Seemed pretty important. Anyway, Twitch never even acknowledged the demands of the streamers. Like Adriana Chechik's broken back, they didn't do anything about it. And... there was never a second Day Off Twitch. There was abosolutely zero follow through. And nobody wanted to acknowledge it. Nobody did fucking anything. Instead of going "wow, they're not doing anything. We should CONTINUE TO PROTEST" you all patted yourself on the back after seeing one day of approximate revenue lost and went back to giving Jeffy Bezzolio cash by subbing to xXxvtuberfeetxXx or whatever. I literally never heard anything about this again.
And last year, reddit made some changes that people didn't like. An unignorable chunk of the site went dark to protest it. The CEO basically then said "eh, this change will make us money, and this protest will pass, so just wait it out." Like literally there was leaked memos saying "eh they'll get over it." AND HE WAS FUCKING RIGHT. Reddit was back to normal in like a fucking week. No changes made to their plans. And nobody went, "hey, fuckface, we're serious!" They just. Let it happen.
That's the thing. Gamers and nerds LOVE to talk a big talk until it inconveniences them. And then, they'll protest JUST ENOUGH to say that they tried. "Play the cards you been dealt" fuckin mentality. They were like "yeah I didn't watch Twitch during A Day Off Twitch, so I did my part! Oh, sure, nothing came of it, and then they literally had bodyguards manhandle a woman with a back broken in two places live on camera like two months later, but what else am I supposed to do?" as if not using twitch was not an option. as if using twitch was, in fact, an imperative.
And let's talk about Discord. you know, originally, for gamers. But now due to investments by social media moguls, it's worse than skype was. And be real, you know it's not gonna get better. Every two weeks they do something you all hate, and I have to hear about it. And again, Not using discord is never considered. Using discord is again, apparently, an imperative. When they made you guys change usernames - which I will actually go on record and say was not that big of a deal and that y'all majorly overreacted - it was such a prevalent, inescapable topic on social media you'd think they were literally committing war crimes. And since I've seen war crimes on social media recently, I can say that's literally an apt comparison. I see as much coverage about the IDF's crimes as I saw "DISCORD IS MAKING US CHANGE USERNAMES!" posts. And despite the fact you guys FLOODED them with feedback about how you didn't like it, they held fast and held steady. They knew it'd blow over eventually. AND IT DID. Within a month of the change y'all stopped making a fuss. Guess tellin your blorbo chat that you'd like to switch to Telegram (or Escargot, or a fourm, or IRC, or whatever) was more effort than just accepting the username change, huh? And now you've accepted ten or twelve other shitty things they've done since, eh?
And this all wraps up to my point nicely. Gamers/nerds have no spine, and regardless of what politics they say they believe - or perhaps genuinely believe they believe - push comes to shove they're going for instant gratification every time. Inconvenience is not to be tolerated, and wants are meant to be resolved in the easiest way possible (by giving in). The concept of taking a stand is LOVELY to them until it means actually standing up, because that requires minor personal sacrifices and gosh, we can't have that.
FRLG, HGSS, ORAS. Beautiful remakes. So when BDSP was announced - an ugly, 1:1 port with no added features, no additional mons (even including the ones introduced in BDSP's sister game PLA), made by a random software developer who had never made a game before, in unity, under severe crunch, for more money than the other remakes... I thought it was a slam dunk. We could finally tell TPCi to fuck off. Well, it sold about 15 million copies. At a $60 price tag, that means they made roughly $900 Million (roundable to a billion with a b) on what's unquestionably a shitty game. That one, personally, ruined my hopes for the game industry. Gamers will take whatever's given to them.
Games without the constraints of capitalism would be fantastic - but as long as capitalism exists, gamers will allow it to exist in the space. They don't have the spine to leave Discord - it's near sisyphean to expect them to control themselves enough to not enable the bad habits of companies.
... hmmm this took two hours to write due to an unfortunate crash but apparently I've had this essay fuckin loaded in my subconscious.

supernatural s13e6 tombstone (w. davy perez)
SAM No. You're – you're dead. CASTIEL Yeah, I was. But then I… annoyed an ancient cosmic being so much that he sent me back.
i mean. that's how i described it too. but laughing that we're seriously gonna say that in this moment without the boys reacting, lol okay!
please not this music, it's making me laugh. papa castiel is home! cue the cheesiest fucking emotional music. you know what it reminds me of? the zelda breath of the wild like... those flashback cut scenes, the memories? mushy ones with zelda haha (plinky piano bits around 19:19 if you're curious)
cas hitting the hug jackpot, 3 unsolicted ones! and the one with jack was sweet
whew and now we get cheesy old west music too.
DEAN Yeah, we've done more on less. Besides Dodge City's kind of, uh, kind of awesome. All right, well… two salty hunters, one half-angel kid, and a dude who just came back from the dead. Again. Team Free Will 2.0. Here we go.
no more suicidal dean apparently, get an unexpected resurrection and cowboy shenanigans and he's happy and fired up
Tumblr media
one thing i find endlessly amusing/fascinating is how like, all these years we're gonna have silly little logistical questions like. how they clean their suits, are they doing dry cleaning, are they rolling up their suits in their duffels with everything else, etc etc. but we got to see some ironing not long back and now, dry cleaning bags!
Tumblr media
cas's face is cracking me up
JACK He really likes cowboys. CASTIEL Yes. Yes, he does.
also my face at the creative team that decided this was part of dean's schtick. i want to let dean enjoy silly things. but they just push so hard
also they're gonna get one room (albeit a suite) for all 4 of them. jack doesn't sleep much, cas doesn't sleep at all. what are those two gonna do while the humans are sleeping? awkward
Tumblr media
SAM You're in a good mood, huh? DEAN Yeah. And? SAM Nothing. No, no, I-I-I just, uh… you've been having a rough go, so it's… it's good to see you smile. DEAN Well, I said I needed a big win. We got Cas back. That's a pretty damn big win. SAM Yeah. Fair enough.
what's up with your attitude there, sam. you don't actually seem very happy. worried he's gonna crash and burn? jealous that it's cas? jealous that cas is taking jack from him? (lol)
little bonding for cas and jack while the humans were sleeping talking about his mom was nice
Tumblr media
untitled 1 and 2 our old friends!! last seen i think in one episode in 10x10 and not quite some time before that. if my blog search/index wasn't so fucked i could find more details. song remains the same
Tumblr media
set designers let the kitsch explode. those silhouettes
CASTIEL I told you. He's an angry sleeper. Like a bear.
Tumblr media
cheesy but i laughed. i, too, wake up in a foul mood and should not be talked to
Tumblr media Tumblr media
oh sure dean, you're cringing over cas's line but we've all been very generous in accepting your goofy ass shit like that bolo tie and need to cosplay tombstone to begin with
Tumblr media
can truly appreciate the sheer awfulness of that hat cas is wearing out in the sunlight. it's so small, it's so translucent. cheapest of straw hats. (not knockin straw hats! my dad was an avid cowboy hat wearer and had a couple nice straw ones for the summer)
i don't pay too much attention to how time flows on this show, i do know sometimes it can be weeks between episodes, sometimes it's the next day (another thing that irked me on teen wolf was how they spent like... 2+ full seasons in one year to keep the kids in high school). but anyway, i just wonder how much show universe time cas was not off on some whatever, and around to do this stuff hanging out with them. them crammed in sam's room on his uncomfortable bed to watch a movie, like they did with charlie? lol. based on the number of times i've seen it in fic, i gather a bunker room with a tv does become a thing at some point, so maybe it was in there?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
.... a shootout in the parking lot of the knockoff wells fargo in broad daylight. what planet are we on right now. so jack can accidentally kill a civilian with his powers, great
CASTIEL Jack, I've killed people who didn't deserve it… my friends– I've killed people I loved. I wish I could tell you that it– that it gets easier, that with time, it hurts less, but that would be a lie because it– it never gets easier. And those moments, they never stop hurting. But that doesn't mean that you should stop fighting. Doesn't mean that just because you made a mistake – and that's what this is, Jack. It's a mistake. That doesn't mean that you can't– can't be better, do better. I believe that. I have to believe that.
so the people he killed that he loved, would that be like. angelic siblings? wonder if the wiki keeps track of who killed whom. he killed a bunch of fake deans in that one episode lol
SAM And we still believe in you, Jack. We, uh– JACK Stop. Just… Please stop.
anyway, point being, wasn't this just an accident?? like when eileen accidentally killed the bmol dude? eileen got a hug and commiseration, they're talking about who they murdered and WE STILL BELIEVE YOU'RE NOT EVIL i would tell them to stop too!
Tumblr media
why do they do this with him
JACK No, maybe you're right. Maybe I'm just another monster. DEAN No, you're not. I thought you were. I did. But… Like Sam said, we've all done bad. We all have blood on our hands. So if you're a monster, we're all monsters.
dean gets to have his little personal growth acknowledgement
really added dimension to the terror of thinking he's a monster like sam did, with a bunch of unintended injury and now death wrapped up in it. kind of hard to... care about anything except vaguely because we sitll barely know him but if i sit and think about it, sure
and a whole other thing dealing with kid having a meltdown when they can just teleport away.
oh god just considered now dean might feel extra guilty for telling jack he was a monster and he was gonna kill him, now that jack ran away. that could be the crash and burn :p

With the announcement of the Legend of Zelda movie I was thinking "well the Mario movie wasn't bad had a fun sound track and it was a pretty film to look at" I then learnt it's apparently going to be live action and so I'm now here like "what out of touch corporate sentient sack of money suggested that because I'll tell you what if any video game is going to be animated it should be a Zelda movie like make a fun anime style thing for gods sake" with all that out of the way I look forward to Tom Holland's portrayal of Link because it would probably be him if they get big names in

15 Questions for 15 Mutuals
Tagged by @twosides--samecoin and .....i think somebody else tagged me in this as well, except i can't find it in my likes so uh. yeah. thank you though! Tagging: @dudethatsgay @kharonion @bluepriestess @kyngsnake @ragedaisy @buthappysoverrated @bleumanouche @millionsknives + anyone else who wants to participate
1: Are you named after anyone?
I am! My middle name is from a family friend that passed shortly before I was born. I've considered going by it since I like it more than my first name, however 1: it gets butchered even worse than my first name, and 2: it's extremely close to the name of a character from a podcast that was super popular on here back in the day and I don't want people to think I named myself after that character lmao.
2: When was the last time you cried?
shgdlusfhjgdffgifdshsg literally at work this morning, one of my favorite patients was put down last night and then again after my coworker got a really fucked up call and made me listen to it
3: Do you have kids?
Absolutely not.
4: Do you use sarcasm a lot?
Absolutely, I have a very dry sense of humor and it usually takes people a bit to catch on to that lmao. Doesn't translate much online but any of y'all that have talked to me or heard me on voice chat know exactly what the fuck I'm talking about
5: What sports do you play/have you played?
I did dance and figure skating for a few years when I was a kid, then picked up horseback riding and did that for ...12ish years I think? I started when I was like 10 and stopped in my early 20's. I don't currently do people sports but I'm starting to get into dog sports
6: What's the first thing you notice about people?
General vibes, I'm pretty observant and pick up on body language very quickly.
7: Eye color?
Green, with central heterochromia so my eyes are light brown/hazel in the middle. I may have given one of my OCs the same eye color
8: Scary movies or happy endings?
100% scary movies
9: Any special talents?
I'm good at reading people and can usually figure out what issues are going to come from them immediately. Like I've had a few friends that I thought would be flaky or sketchy on first impression, and years down the line - guess who's now being super flaky or sketchy. I've picked up on a few different work relationships/affairs way before that dirt's come up, too. I'm also apparently very intimidating irl and play into that a ton so I get to be the scary dog friend or whatever the kids are calling it nowadays
10: Where were you born?
Detroit
11: What are your hobbies?
Art, photography, crafting & cosplaying(this is probably like 8 different hobbies in one - I primarily do sewing, painting, sculpting, leatherwork, 3D printing + finishing 3D prints, vacuum forming and working with thermoplastics, etc etc), and basically anything involving animals - I'm really into dog training currently.
12: Do you have any pets?
My house is basically a zoo lmao. I'm apparently a stray collector or something because I keep either finding animals that don't get claimed or they get rehomed or surrendered to me. Here's a list of everyone:
Molly: ~10-12 year old seal APBT mix
Zelda: 5 year old black & white Great Dane
Lucy: 2 year old seal & white Siberian Husky & APBT mix
Obi: 8 year old black domestic longhair
Loki: 8 year old orange & white domestic shorthair
Oliver: 2 year old tuxedo domestic shorthair
Felix: ~2 year old tabby domestic shorthair
+ a currently unnamed alien betta - haven't posted pics yet since he's still settling in, but he's solid turquoise and very feisty.
13: How tall are you?
5'10"
14: Fave subject in school?
I really liked taking history classes, biology, & art. I also really liked the geology class I took way back, & I've had to take some various science-aligned classes for my program(example: art-based anatomy class focused on visible anatomy, how bodies move, range of motion for various joints and parts, etc) that were cool too.
15: Dream job?
I mean ideally I'd be getting paid to live in some rich guy's house and make whatever the hell kind of art I want, but that isn't a career path nowadays so I'll just say artist. I'm in school for game design and plan on going into concept art or character design, but who knows at this point.

iceangel has consumed me out of nowhere. sequel to friends. this one’s rated M, so, like, 18+ only. if ur under 18 avert your eyes. chapter 1 of 2. preview:
“wait, are you seriously still scared we're going to get caught?”
“are you not?”
warren's expression goes from frustrated to downright bewildered. “no, i'm not, because it's not a big deal. not unless you're secretly dating hank or something and i'm sticking my foot in a second love triangle, that is?” when bobby doesn't say anything, merely averts his gaze to the sheets on his bed, warren huffs out a haughty breath and continues, “i'd also like to point out that we haven't gotten caught yet, so why would we now? you just need to — be quiet. think quietly.”
“oh, sure. how the hell am i supposed to do that exactly?”
famous last words. bobby's apparently got to work on carefully wording every single thing he says around warren, because warren knows how to pounce on even the smallest amount of leeway.
read it below the cut or check it out on ao3 instead!
there's this languidness to the way warren kisses that bobby still can't figure out how to match. he's soft and slow and relaxed and perfect and all bobby is able to do is ride it along like a wave, try not to drown in those stupidly blue eyes of warren's.
but there's stuff bobby has figured out from kissing warren. he's figured out he likes it when warren kisses his neck, especially that little spot under his ear. he really likes it when warren settles over his thigh, slots a knee in between his legs so they both have some friction. and warren really likes it when bobby threads his fingers through his hair and holds. warren makes this noise low in his throat when bobby holds his hair like that, presses closer, kisses him a little harder, and that is something bobby knows how to match.
the thing is, though, when bobby would kiss zelda? it wasn't ever like this. bobby was polite; he was gentle, he was slow, but not in the languid way warren is. bobby was slow in — in a different way. everything was, is, just so, so different.
because he kissed zelda, sure. but he's been making out with warren. bobby and zelda held hands, danced at clubs; bobby and warren are fooling around, rustling up sheets and leaving marks where nobody else will see them.
it's really nothing short of a miracle that they're able to sneak into each other's rooms like this. warren's mentioned it once already, asking if they even need to sneak around, but bobby was quick to remind warren that the professor wasn't all that big a fan of jean and scott, so why would he feel any better about warren and him?
(warren had muttered against his neck then that the professor wasn't all that concerned about him, other than making sure their team was well-funded, of course. bobby pulled his hair a little tighter to get the mood back up; sue him.)
tonight's a good night, though. no uncomfortable conversations or trains of thought bobby has to navigate around, no feathers smacking him in the face, no noises going bump in the night that have bobby a breath away from melting into a puddle to avoid being seen.
“we—” bobby swallows back a noise, fingers curling against warren's hip. "we shouldn't—" his breath catches in his chest as warren's hips shift, as his lips ghost over the pulse point beating wildly in bobby's neck. “warren, seriously, we—”
all at once warren is drawing back, hips stilling and expression absolutely pitiful. he looks beyond frustrated, and bobby has to ignore the growing sense of pride that somehow, some way, warren is frustrated because of him. mostly because warren is snapping at him, “what? i won't call you a quick-shot again, so can we just—”
oh, god. bobby swats at warren's hip. “dude, shut up. no. how long have you been in here? jean and scott were watching that movie, and it's probably gonna be done soon, so we really should stop before they come up to their rooms.”
“don't think about me, for starters,” warren says lightly. his hips shift against bobby's thigh, and he places a hand on bobby's stomach, over his shirt, as he starts to lean back down again.
but the closer he gets, the more bobby thinks about him. thinks about his hands, his hips, his muscles, his lips his smile, his eyes, his hair, his everything, everything, everything— “that's impossible.”
“is it?” warren's tone is still light, practically conversational, even as his breath puffs against bobby's neck. “and why's that, bobby?”
“because you're—”
warren's fingers slip under the hem of bobby's shirt. for a split second, bobby starts to arc away, because they haven't done that before, they haven't touched skin, but warren's hand is warm and curious and soft and it just feels really nice, so he's relaxing into that touch even faster, letting out a noise that is not a whine.
“because you're too fucking perfect,” bobby bemoans. (warren laughs as he starts trailing kisses up, up, up bobby's neck, smiling against his skin.) “stupidly, annoyingly, infuriatingly perfect, like one of those marble statues in an art museum that was handcrafted by fucking michelangelo—”
“you're still thinking about me,” says warren. his fingers skim across bobby's skin, lingering over all the places his muscles jump. “that's the opposite of what you should be doing right now.”
“shut up, you ass,” bobby says. he threads his fingers into warren's hair at the same time, right down to the root of those soft, wavy blonde locks, and takes hold. at the noise warren makes at that, bobby's tone turns teasing himself as he adds in, “you like getting your hair pulled.”
warren huffs out a laugh, but bobby thinks it sounds more flustered than amused. “and you like pulling it.”
ugh. damn it. damn it.
bobby has no comeback for that one. he usually never does. any attempts at being quippy die out when warren's hand slides back down bobby's stomach, then closes around the hem of his shirt and pulls up, just a little.
“is it okay if i...?” warren trails off, and for the first time in all the times now they've made out on one of their beds these past few weeks, he sounds almost unsure.
for a beat, bobby's quiet. something about this feels stupid, something about it still feels wrong, but warren doesn't feel wrong. sometimes he's a little birdbrained, but that's different. that's just warren, too. bobby likes warren, likes this even if half his mind is telling him to not, and—
“yeah,” says bobby. “yeah— please.”
warren smiles again. it's too perfect; bobby can't do anything but think of it, of him. then he's pulling bobby's shirt higher, over the lean muscle of his stomach and up over his chest, piling it there so he can slide his hand up, up, up. bobby’s muscles twitch under his touch, one part ticklish and one part simply unused to someone touching him like this.
but it feels good. it feels right. which is a startling realization, one bobby’s not too sure how to cope with.
luckily, he doesn’t need to figure that out. mostly because now it’s a lot harder to think when warren’s hips are moving with a purpose, and his hand is getting even more curious, and his lips are on bobby’s to muffle the little noises bobby can’t quite keep from coming out. losing himself in warren is too damn easy, like he’s in the ocean and getting swallowed up by a rip current.
rip currents can be pretty dangerous, though. you can drown in them. and all at once, bobby does kinda feel like he’s — like he’s gonna keel over and just die. mostly because his bedroom door is suddenly opening, and before bobby can quite get warren off of him, there’s a voice exclaiming, “oh, oh no, i’m sorry, i—”
it’s scott. it’s scott. shit. realizing who it is, that’s what gets bobby out of his stupor, and he shoves warren off of him in one heave, sending him ungraciously tumbling from the bed to the floor, wings flapping in surprise with an indignant squawk of, “ow!”
scott, however, is now rambling a mile a minute: “i’m sorry! i thought i heard you, bobby, and i was calling your name, and i knocked on the door, but you weren’t answering, so i was worried you were sick or hurt or something, but—”
bobby finally looks up at scott, still standing in the doorway. his cheeks are as red as his glasses. he looks as mortified as bobby currently feels.
“—but i, uh, i should’ve knocked more, or just— not opened the door. i’m sorry. i’m going to just—“ he looks from bobby, to warren, and then back to bobby, and then back to warren again, before saying, “i’m just going to go. i — god.”
scott turns on his heel and genuinely runs away. he doesn’t even bother to close the door before running. it makes bobby wonder, briefly, if they’ve just scarred scott for life or something.
there’s a silence that’s so tense and sharp it could probably cut through bobby in one clean slice, even in his ice form. he sits there on his bed, perched on his knees, staring at the open door.
“fuck.”
bobby turns his head, gaze snapping to warren. there’s a few loose feathers on the floor. he has his head in his hands, but after a few beats, he looks up, and he looks— he just looks—
“you’re an ass, bobby, do you know that?” warren snaps, starting to gather himself up.
he looks upset. upset. and bobby doesn’t know what to say, what to do, how to fix this — so he watches warren get up, watches him fix his shirt and ruffle out his wings, and he watches a couple more feathers float to the floor as warren storms out of his bedroom.
warren, at least, closes the door.
he slams it, though, and the sound reverberates in bobby’s mind as much as a clean shot to his head does.
he’s not sure how long he sits there on his bed, silent and not moving, but eventually he forces himself up to gather up the feathers and toss them into the trash.
it feels weird to stare at them, surrounded by scraps of paper and tissues and empty chip bags.

Apparently it’s looking like Illumination is the first pick for handling the Zelda movie, which makes sense from a track record stand point sort of because they made such a profitable Mario movie.
I kinda feel like their style isn’t great for most Zelda tho? I’d feel okay with Illumination handling the games that used toon art. If they wrote something with the mix of comedy and sincerity you got in Despicable Me, that would probably work for something like Wind Waker or Minish Cap. I’d also settle for an originlal story. It’s not like they outdo Nintendo in confusing the Zelda canon anyway. I just reaaaaally don’t want to see something related to BotW/TotK pushed out because those games have done so well. Or OoT or TP. (Now that I’ve had that thought, I’m more worried about them going with OoT than anything, since multiple other games’ stories directly tie to it.) I don’t think Illumination’s general style would suit those games as much. I’d have rather they get Dreamworks if that’s what they plan to adapt.

okay no idea how long ago this wasy, but i was tagged by @catdotjpeg in a thing apparently and discovered it while cleaning up my tabs, so let’s do this
last song // ... you know, tangentially it’s honestly caramelldansen (it’s not technically but now that’s what’s in my head so we’re going with that)
last show // decided to rewatch steven universe last night, got through the first season while i was asleep, or new episodes of rwby have been what i’ve been up to
last movie // rewatched encanto a couple weeks back.... don’t ask me what the last first-time watched movie is, no idea
currently watching // again, rwby, plus crit role campaign three and dimension 20 never after, and rewatching fantasy high... i think that’s it for now, though i’m considering a fair handful of shows other people irl would actually, you know, recognize (last of us, ted lasso, yellowjackets, etc)
currently reading // been bouncing back and forth between naruto fic and glee fic, looking forward to saturday when i get my new sanderson story to read
current obsession // well rwby has new episodes so that’s my weekly obsession, but been on a gaming bend as well - i’m in the last dungeon for original zelda second quest, and i’ve played through a decent chunk of metroid prime 3
not in the mood to tag folks, sorry

1. are you named after anyone? Irl, after my grandma on my mom’s side (apparently?). Or her mom. Not sure. Online, yes I’m named after the goddess of wisdom “Nayru” in The Legend of Zelda and Fullmetal Alchemist protag Edward Elric, later shortened to “Nay” and the fact I am a salty sarcastic bitch who loves (and is a) fish. 🐟👍
2. when was the last time you cried? Yesterday watching episode 5 of Garden of Sinners with my sister. I watched this series years and years ago now, but holy fuck, some of the Buddhist metaphors are only now making sense to me. Shiki’s return hit me really hard, taking into account my obsessive inclination toward Jin Guangyao at the moment, and having recently seen the new Puss in Boots movie given how it addresses death (which you should totally go see in theaters btw, it was phenomenal).
3. do you have kids? I am redacting this question because no I do not and never plan to, fuck them kids and being reduced to my womb <3<3<3
4. do you use sarcasm a lot? To the point one of my close friends currently hates me and readers of my fanfics cannot believe deep philosophical bullshit is written out of this meme-filled brain, sí.
5. what’s the first thing you notice about people? How aware they are. If they seem like they’re taking in their surroundings, or if they’re lost in their own mind; if they’re like a goldfish swimming mindlessly in water or a person who knows where they are or is at least trying to understand. I measure this primarily through the shape and movement of the eyes, and also of the entire body.
6. what's your eye colour? Hazel. More brown than green but apparently sometimes really green.
7. scary movies or happy endings? ...Neither? How about psychologically Fucked endings that make you question life and humanity and your existence? Yeah, I’ll take that.
8. any special talents? I really don’t know. Many people seem to think I’m good at writing, drawing, piano performance, analyzing people, being serene in tough situations, being tactful/sensitive toward others’ needs... being open and willing to listen to others? Most of this comes naturally to me, and I suck at giving myself credit for anything, so. Maybe???
9. where were you born? In the coldest fucking state of America with lots of swamps and fishes and water. It’s in the Midwest, of course.
10. what are your hobbies? Uhhh lately? Video games, writing, traditional art (particularly with pens and pencils), reading (occasionally), yoga/gym/fitness stuff, seeking out new foods to eat, trying to inject as much knowledge into my brain as absolutely fucking possible on a daily basis (especially as it concerns understanding others’ points of view), and... I think that’s it (aside from the more ahem💦 personal stuff).
11. have you any pets? Not currently. :( I don’t think my frequent relocation or tumultuous personal life circumstances would be a good environment to raise a pet in. I took care of my friend’s cat two summers ago, and that kind of solidified that I’m just not at a time in my life to want or be able to have that kind of responsibility, haha.
12. what sports do you play/have played? I really miss doing equestrian shit lately... I’ve also done gymnastics, dance (tap, ballet, hip-hop), and I was decent at badminton?? None of those were for long tho. Also swimming. I never competed, but I’m really good at swimming. OH! If martial arts count, then also kung fu/southern fist, taichi, and yoga.
13. what's your height? Short. :’)
14. favorite subject in school? Uhhhhhhh I always really liked bio and biochem and astronomy classes in grade school. Also English/literature analysis classes. In college, I guess the weird esoteric classes like “race, sexuality, and empire on the operatic stage” and “media theory of religion” were particularly fascinating (and mind-bending) to me.
15. dream job? Gee bro idk haha, I don’t dream of labor~ But forreal, I’m thinking my new dream job is being a half-time writer, half-time scuba-diving instructor or something of that ilk. I... actually got hired as a remote copywriter (on a topic I care about!!) recently, so uh. I guess I gotta find a new dream job now :’D
The original prompt said to tag 15 people, but I changed it. Please. Please fucking do it. My friends are all tired of me tagging them (but I will anyway lmao): @jackshade21 @stupidbluejay @mattbear-music-nz @stupidbluejay @tiburme @lizard-dumbass @wifiwuxians

Currently Watching: A bunch of art tutorials that are doomed to be banished to the watch later folder because I can't focusss.
Last Movie: Legend (1986)- its free to watch on youtube right now! The glitter is immaculate and as always Tim Curry is the highlight of the film.
Currently Reading: My story notes. Trying to get at least somewhat organized TTvTT;;
Sweet/Savory/Spicy: Hmm if I was stranded on an island and had to choose between a piece of pocket candy, the other survivor, or a mouth full of campfire. I think I'd go with the candy.
Relationship Status: Bi/Heteroflexible. Lucky to be loved by my best friend.
Current Obsession: These are the main things on my mind nowadays other than my stories- Metal Gear, Zelda, Devil May Cry, Final Fantasy, Phoenix Wright, Shovel Knight, Elderscrolls, Cartoon skeletons and psychopomps of all kinds, dad jokes/puns, shiny things, cottagecore, witchy/goth stuff, retro junk, vinesauce, jerma, and drawfee
Last Google: What do Safflowers taste like XD; Apparently the answer is "the petals have a mellow flavor with subtle notes of nut and sweet chocolate" The more you know!
Currently Working On: Aaaalways thinking about/working on my stories but recently made more progress on my rpgmaker version of my main one, TLS, (I might post a little of it someday but its more of a personal project), finishing art WIPs and trying to improve in general, an animatic I'll probably never finish, got a few polymer clay figures I'm attempting to make decent, an outfit for my Stitches plush to look more like my Pocket Camp one, my Live2d model, Duolingo Spanish, trying new recipes, eventually learn to play the guitar my dad gave me, gardening, I learned how to make an oragami crane a while back! Hmm… I got a few other random things I wanna try but unfortunately my brain is a tornado. Other than that life, physical and mental health- the works.
Tagging- Anyone who feels like it!!

Bsd Is Kinda A Genius Anime: Pt 6
Almost done with this series.
*sigh*
Maybe I'll stop staying up so late to make posts.
ANYWAY!
We're doing the guild this time!
So let's go!
(Also, there's apparently a member of the Guild that doesn't have an ability, so I'm not doing him. He's not an important character anyway. So I'm doing 10 characters. Oof that's a lot.)
Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald
Ability: The Great Fitzgerald
If this isn't the whitest name I've ever heard, I swear. Anyway, Francis's RLC was actually born into a wealthy family, and also had his own moments of financial crisis. Fits him to a T, huh? His RLC also wrote a ton about the highs and lows of the Roaring Twenties regarding financial security and all that. Francis's ability is based on "The Great Gatsby," but despite that, it's really his personality that the book affects. Both the character in "The Great Gatsby" and Francis are arrogant little fucks who got money from who knows where and use their money as their power. Also, Francis and his RLC both have a wife named Zelda. (I didn't mean to make this part sound like I hate Francis, but it came out that way for some reason.)
Edgar Allan Poe
Ability: Black Cat in a Rue Morgue
AGAHGAHAG IT'S POE'S TURN! HEHEHEHE~ (Can you tell who I favorite?) I'm gonna make his part the best! LET'S FUCKING GO! I also know a lot about Edgar Allen Poe, so let's see how little of the Fandom I need to use. Let's see.... I know that his ability is a mix of "The Black Cat" and "The Murders in the Rue Morgue." I've only read "The Black Cat" as of right now, (don't worry, I'll read the other one soon. I'm making it a mission to read all of Poe's RLC's books.) but given that Poe's ability doesn't link to anything besides pulling people into books, I'm not gonna look into it. I do know that Poe has a lot of references in his character that align with his RLC's books. The black cat and crow references are pretty obvious. It does say that Poe having Karl as a pet is a reference to a movie, but I wanna argue that by saying it's probably a reference to the theory that Poe's RLC died from rabies. (I can't let go of that theory, and I think it fits, and like Karl and any cat you'll ever meet, if I fits, I sits.)
Howard Phillips Lovecraft
Ability: Great Old One
While not as big of a fan of his RLC, his books and basic genre of books are a big inspiration of mine, so I'll try to make his part good, too. Although, I won't have to do a big deep dive into this guy's books either. Lovecraft's RLC's books usually revolved around extraterrestrial or mythical beings and "morbid phenomenon," as the Fandom states. Ever heard of Cthulhu? Think that type of stuff when you see any of Lovecraft's RLC's books. But yeah, you can see where Lovecraft gets his personality and "gift." He's strange, just like the books, and his ability is based off of Lovecraft's writings of the eldritch god Cthulhu, which if you don't know what that is, then that's exactly what it is. (You can also look it up I guess) That's also why Lovecraft's "gift" isn't really a gift and is kinda a mystery. It fits his RLC's vibe with all his gothic and confusing mystery and horror stories. You're not really supposed to understand them.
John Steinbeck
Ability: The Grapes of Wrath
I think the American authors have a tighter connection with their characters. Or maybe I'm just able to find connections easier. Anyway. Steinbeck is almost completely based on the main character from "The Grapes of Wrath." Both him and the main character were farmers and had the same family members. That's pretty much it. You can get the gist of his ability from the name. (I'm trying to avoid research tonight because it's late and I'm really sorry about that.) Also, Steinbeck's RLC wrote "Of Mice and Men"?! SERIOUSLY?! I've never read it, but I've heard it's really good, so I'm surprised.
Lucy Maud Montgomery
Ability: Anne of the Abyssal Red
what happened to anne's playroom? *shaking in my boots* Is that the actual name? Geez. It's terrifying. OH MY GOODNESS IT'S BASED ON "Anne of Green Gables," AND THAT'S THE NAME THE AUTHOR CHOSE FOR THE ABILITY!? Man, that's insane. So yeah, this just further proves my theory that all the Guild members are more based on the books. "Anne of Green Gables" (yes, I've read it) is basically about this orphan girl who gets sent to the wrong home, in Green Gables, but it ends up being her forever home after she soon settles in and everything. Now, the reason it's the wrong home is the brother and sister she was sent to lived on a farm and they wanted a boy, and instead they get this tiny 11 year old girl. I mean, it kinda makes sense for Lucy. She's an orphan and the Agency was kinda like the home she wasn't really supposed to go to but ended up staying in. The playroom though? I'm not sure. I can't remember too much else from the novel, so if somebody could inform me on a connection to the book and her gift, that'd be great.
Louisa May Alcott
Ability: Little Women
This is a really well known book, but I gotta say, I've never read it, so I guess I'm doing research. Hmmm.... I don't really see much in common? Looks like Louisa is the first to break pattern. "Little Women" is just a sorta semi-autobiographical about Louisa's RLC and her 3 (2? Maybe 4?) sisters growing up and coming into "woman-hood" as the website says. I'm not really sure what to pull from that for Louisa. I mean, one of the sisters was super shy, but it wasn't the sister that was based on Louisa's RLC, so.... Idk.
Margaret Mitchell
Ability: Gone With the Wind
Ok, I think the ability is pretty self-explanatory, and while I haven't read the book, I'd say the Fandom does a good job explaining it. So, "Gone With the Wind" is about a family post Civil War and mainly follows the rich little daughter's love affairs while the family falls into poverty. If that's wrong, blame the Fandom. So, I can see a few connections. Margaret wanted to earn some money to get back her family's pride (or whatever it is she said, I can't remember), which connects to the book's family falling into poverty. And she's southern like the characters in the book, I guess. Besides that, nothing much else to talk about.
Mark Twain
Ability: Tom Sawyer & Huck Finn
I've never read a "Mark Twain" book in my life, so let's see what research I have to do. Oh shit it's two stories? Fml. Uh... besides that, I don't see much connection between Mark and his RLC, so I guess we're just going on to the books, as has been the pattern for most of the Guild. Em.... not much from the books though. Ability wise, that is. I mean, the two characters from the books were friends, so I guess that kinda correlates to how Mark's ability beings work? Um... but..... besides that it kinda just connects to how cheerful and upbeat Mark acts, since both the books by his RLC are about boyhood. So.... yeah.
Nathaniel Hawthorne
Ability: The Scarlet Letter
Either I'm getting faster or I'm getting lazier. Whatever. Anyway, isn't this that weird movie that had a pseudo-sequel about the girl pretending to not be a virgin? (Idk if that's actually a pseudo-sequel, I'm just calling it that. I could be completely fucking wrong.) I'm kinda right? Ok, the priest thing fits since his RLC was in a very religious environment growing up. Also, I think the only reason his gift has to do with his blood is cause the A she puts on herself is red, so.... yeah. Simple connection. (Or I'm completely wrong.)
Alright! That was.... quick.... which makes me worry these aren't very good....
Lemme know if what I wrote was bad or not.
I've never gotten through them this quick.
Maybe since I knew most of them and didn't have to research much, it was easier?
Idk.
Whatever.
For the final part I'm doing the Rats in the House of the Dead, minus Fyodor cause I've already done him.

Why Were There So Many Throwback RPGs and Remakes In 2023?
New Post has been published on https://thedigitalinsider.com/why-were-there-so-many-throwback-rpgs-and-remakes-in-2023/
Why Were There So Many Throwback RPGs and Remakes In 2023?
Tumblr media
The quality of video game releases in 2023 has been discussed in detail by many, and it will absolutely go down as one of the best years the medium has experienced, strictly in terms of the excellent games that were released. The larger industry and its members will always look back on 2023 with justified frustration.
Patterns in any year are always a given. Trends inspire entire genres to be prevalent, and we also have events like 2009, where there were two high-profile open-world games about super-powered humans: Infamous and Prototype. This year will certainly be remembered for games like The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and Baldur’s Gate 3, among others, but I can’t help but notice that RPGs citing a specific era of the genre were also, inexplicably, hugely popular.
Tumblr media
Earlier this year, we featured Sea of Stars on the cover of Game Informer magazine. Talking to the team at Sabotage about its inspirations, it specifically cited the classic Super Nintendo game, Super Mario RPG. And when I played Sea of Stars a few months later, I could clearly see how the developer pulled from that game. One of the reasons Sea of Stars exists is because games like it are rare today, which makes it all the more surprising that Nintendo would announce a full remake of the game shortly after. What are the odds?
Tumblr media
And then, within weeks, Square Enix saw it fit to announce and release an excellent remake of the beloved 1998 Star Ocean sequel, Second Story. That game fits right alongside Sea of Stars and Super Mario RPG as an RPG of a specific era – one interested in telling a linear story without overcomplicating its primary mechanics.
Tumblr media
Before all of these games, however, we had Octopath Traveler II, a well-liked sequel to a game that may have served as a strong indicator to people and publishers with money that, “Hey – we miss these kinds of games. We want our characters and environments to look like a bundle of squares while going on an adventure. In fact, maybe it is the game to point to that started this whole thing.
Tumblr media
It was admittedly less successful than the others mentioned here, but even WrestleQuest from earlier this year was another game playing in the throwback RPG medium. Late 2022 also saw the release of Chained Echoes. We also have the Dragon Quest III HD-2D remake coming at some point in the future.
So why is all this happening now? Why has this sub-genre of RPGs – inspired by the 16 and early 32-bit – become so popular all of a sudden? Or was it always there, and I just wasn’t paying attention?
Tumblr media
I have a few ideas to put forward with little basis in scientific research. Video games, even compared to other entertainment mediums, are much more focused on nostalgia. Reliving the TV shows and movies you watched or books you read as a child simply isn’t as strong as the emotions related to existing within an interactive world. I didn’t just passively play Super Mario RPG when I was young – I lived in its universe. And RPGs are particularly good at that. They encourage players to exist within them and take them at a slower pace. The age we are now (i.e. old) has now placed us in a position where the experiences we are looking to remember are less the action-packed platformer challenges of our youth and more the relaxed vacations. We’re too old for the exciting amusement park of memory. Those rides make me nauseated at this age. But the old beach house where I just hung around and swam when the mood hit me? That sounds great. I want to play that video game, and apparently, it’s an old RPG where reaction time isn’t as important as making sure you have the right sword equipped.
It’s either that, or they are just selling really well, and people are buying them. I accept either explanation, both, or neither. Whatever gets me an HD-2D remake of Chrono Trigger the fastest.

Trailers: Pay the damn actors!
Yeah, I was really hoping the SAG would get their fair deal this month. I'm fed up with the AMPTP and their bullshit, especially while waiting for Deadpool 3, Stranger Things, and the next half of Chucky.
This better be resolved soon, because otherwise 2024 is going to be pretty dry for movies.
Leave the World Behind: Another all-star apocalypse movie. Another reason never to trust AI.
Candy Cane Lane: Oh cool, Eddie Murphy is going back to family movies with a Christmas movie on Amazon Prime. Hope it's good!
The Boys in the Boat: The story of the U.S. men's rower's team in the 1936 Berlin Olympics. Not much to comment, I'm not really fan of sports movies.
The Iron Claw: The tragic story of the Von Erich wrestling dynasty. I never heard of them up until now, and all I can say is YIKES. That's not a curse, that's just horrible parenting.
Silent Night: John Woo returns to action films in this completely mute movie about a guy going after the gang that shot his son. While I'm not a fan of John Woo, even I'm intrigued by this.
American Fiction: Fed up with the racist publishing industry, Jeffrey Wright decides to write a book that completely panders to Black stereotypes--and winds up becoming a hit. Oh this looks fantastic!
Anyone But You: I'm not sure why this romantic comedy with Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell has gotten so much hype. Looks like your standard "pretend to date me even though I hate you" movie.
Night Swim: We were already scared of swimming in the ocean and night. Now this movie is going to teach us never to swim in our pools in the middle of the night. Well done, Blumhouse.
The Beekeeper: No, Jason Statham isn't really taking care of bees, it's a code name for assassins that apparently unleash hell on organizations that rip people off in phishing scams. That's one way to promote Internet security!
Argylle: A novelist (Bryce Dylan Howard) and her adorable cat are caught up in a real spy adventures. This looks like tons of fun, but I don't get why people are getting so-worked up over Henry Cavill's haircut in this movie. It's not THAT bad.
Lisa Frankenstein: Zelda Williams, daughter of Robin, makes her directorial debut in a teen version of Frankenstein.
