hawaiian adventures!!

happy happy summer my friends!!
I hope you are all soaking up the Vitamin D and enjoying the laid back vibes of summer <3
In June, I went on a big adventure. Myself and a friend took a trip to Maui! It was an incredible, inspiring trip, and just thinking about it puts a big smile on my face. It made me realize how important it is to get out and explore the world in any way you can. I learned so much during those two weeks; about myself, about different cultures and places, and about being open and ready to experience the unexpected.
This trip was a completely mind opening experience for me. There is something magical about being in a foreign place where you know no one, and everything is new and different. I learned so much about what it takes to plan an international trip, and it opened my eyes to the possible. Big trips like this always seemed too big and scary to pursue, but now I know I’m capable of confidently travelling! realized I CAN do it, and believe me, I will be traveling lots more in the future.
I was truly amazed with the beauty I saw in Hawaii. I felt so much thankfulness for being there and being able to truly live in each moment. These feelings made me realize that I can show this gratitude in my familiar hometown. There is so much to be thankful for, and my life back home is deserving of those thoughts as well. Expressing these thoughts of gratitude make every day special, exciting, and most importantly, worthwhile. Regardless of whether I am on an amazing trip, or at home completing my daily routine, I want to continue expressing gratitude, living in the moment and seeing the beauty in each day.
In the same way, this trip has inspired me to seek out adventure in nature on a daily/weekly basis. There are so many places I have yet to explore! I’ve already compiled a list of beaches here on Vancouver Island hehe (I feel beach deprived after being on the white sandy beaches of Hawaii!). Being out in nature to breathe in the fresh air in so grounding. I truly believe it connects us to the world on another level.
This week, I encourage you to take a step outside of your routine and go somewhere new! Take deeps breathes and focus on gratitude. Make it a weekly occurrence and you will be surprised how relaxed, uplifted, and genuinely grateful you will feel for this life and your place in it <3
xoxo

spring cleaning: a minimalistic approach

Wishing everyone a Happy Spring this bright morning!
For me, spring is a time of rebirth, fresh starts, and the flutter of new life. I always find the perfect start to the spring season is a good clean. A simple, organized space makes me feel so much calmer and at peace. The phrase “tidy space, tidy mind” really resonates with me. I feel that I can be more productive in a clean space. I can figure out what I want to achieve when I enter the space, instead of being stressed out by all of the mess and clutter.
A minimalistic approach to spring cleaning is a really beneficial because it allows you to downsize, contemplate what you truly need vs. whats taking up space, and create a place for each item. It creates a mindset of genuine gratitude for your belongings and your space.
Here are 5 tips to get started on your minimalistic journey:
1. babysteps
It’s so easy to get overwhelmed by the amount of stuff you have, and the amount of organizing that needs to be done. So much that it’s hard to even begin the process. Try to take it in small steps, starting with just one drawer. Even if you finished organizing that one drawer that day, consider it a victory! You are one step closer to your goal. Take it day by day, one small step at a time, and you will be surprised at how quickly and easily the spring clean is done.
2. don’t hold back
I want to really encourage you to truly think about the items in your household/room. Do you use them? What is their purpose? Are they just collecting dust in a drawer? Does it bring Joy? Don’t hold back when it comes to saying goodbye to items that no longer serve you and your space anymore. Remember, this is your space. Think about your long term room design/layout goals and what is needed to achieve that. For me, it meant getting rid of a lot of extra bits and pieces. There were items was keeping because it was more convenient or I “might” need it in the future. There was so much clutter I was keeping around because it was easier!
A book I would really recommend for inspiration is the life changing magic of tidying up by marie kondo.
3. you are on your own minimalism journey
Remember during this transition that it’s okay to struggle with letting go of items. Sometimes, we’ve been holding on to some items for so long, and it’s hard to say goodbye to them, even when we know it’s the right thing for our future happiness. Don’t compare yourself to others who seem further along on there minimalism journey. We are all on our own journey to discover what works best for us and our lives. Make it a fun project that you are doing for you!
4. four piles
My fourth and final tip is from the beautiful Alyse, who has a youtube channel called Raw Alignment. She has some great videos about self love, minimalism, veganism and simple living!
When you are decluttering drawers, organize the items into four piles. One pile for items you want to keep, one for items to donate and one for more expensive items you want to sell. For the final pile, place items you are not sure you will use, but not ready to get rid of. Put those items in a box and leave them for 30 days. After those 30 days, if you have not needed to go into that box for anything, donate them. If you did not need those items for a whole month, chances are you don’t need them, and they aren’t a critical source of happiness in your life.
Moving towards a more minimalistic life is an incredibly beneficial step to take. A clean, simple space contributes to a more free, joyous lifestyle. Have fun learning and growing in love and peace!

how to break your smartphone addiction

Good evening lovely people! This weeks post is about iPhone overuse- an issue I’ve been very conscience of the past few months, mainly because I struggle with it too. Smartphones are great tools for organization, keeping in contact with friends and family, and sharing positivity and love. But there comes a point where they can overpower us, and take over our lives. We no longer focus on the real world, but are constantly obsessing over what’s going on online. Instead of lifting us up, smartphones can leave you feeling stressed, unmotivated, and disconnected.
Here are five tips to break out of the online world and become more present:
1. honour your time for sleep
Don’t use your phone 1 hour before bed, and 1 hour after you wake up. Turn your phone on airplane mode before you go to bed, so you won’t get distracted. Disconnecting from technology an hour before bed allows your brain to wind down, and helps you sleep better! When you wake up, let the first thought in your head to be something other than what’s trending on twitter. Be present. You will enjoy the waking up process a lot more if you aren’t glued to a screen. Stretch. Drink your tea. Look outside. Breathe. Feel gratitude for the day. Create a morning routine that calms you and sets your intentions for that day.
2. a time frame
Have a designated time to check social media and email; perhaps after breakfast, or after work/school. Have a time limit too! So often we get so focused on social media it’s been two hours and we don’t know where the time went. Try to limit phone use to 30 minutes.
3. keep things simple
Pick 2-3 social media apps to keep up with and post on, on a daily-weekly basis. Start by reorganizing your phone and deleting unused apps. This will simplify and shorten your phone use. You won’t get overwhelmed with needing to be constantly up to date and active on 6 social media apps.
4. phone detox day
Have a day each week where you don’t touch your phone. Sure, bring it with you for emergencies, ect, but try to go the whole day without scrolling through social media. Put your phone on airplane mode if you must. Just use it as a clock or to listen to music. You don’t NEED social media to survive. I promise you will live without instagram for one day!
Implementing these tips will no doubt be difficult at first. But like any routine, it gets easier! Just remember that taking small steps towards healthier phone habits is better than doing nothing at all! You can do it!
Until next Sunday,
xoxo

february beauty favourites

Happy Sunday! Can you believe it’s almost the end of February?! I’m definitely feeling ready for that warm spring sunshine.
As promised, I’m back with a review of the my favourite new cruelty-free, vegan cosmetic products I’ve been trying out this month!
1. Lush
Over the winter season my skin has been feeling dry and dull, so I switched out my moisturizer for Skin Drink, and I’ve been loving it. It smells like tahini sauce because it’s got sesame oil in it. Plus its super hydrating with the aloe vera infusion and fresh avocado. I have combination skin that definitely needed an extra boost this winter, and Skin Drink did the trick!
Herbalism is a really great cleanser to balance the skins natural oils. It’s nice and gentle, perfect for sensitive skin like mine. Plus, its got a pretty green colour from alfalfa sprouts, which are super rich in minerals and vitamins.
I was almost out of my literal BAE Rose Jam from Lush, and because it’s a seasonal product, I had to find a replacement body wash. I finally settled on The Olive Garden shower gel because of it’s warm, luxurious fragrance. The mandarin and lemon leave you feeling fresh and bright, while the olive oil adds a softness to your skin. Highly recommend!
2. Pacifica
I was dying to try out some Pacifica products this month as their brand 100% vegan and cruelty-free, so I ordered a couple items online.
The Stellar Gaze Mascara is definitely a winner. I love the way it makes my eyelashes so much longer and more defined. It gives the eyelashes a beautiful natural flare, without being clumpy or too much.
I’m one of those girls that needs a pack of makeup removing wipes on hand at all times. I’m super lazy when it comes to taking off my makeup, and wipes just make the whole process 100x easier. I was so psyched to see that Pacifica had some for under $6! Plus, the packaging is just beautiful! They get the job done and cut my night routine time in half.
3. Carina Organics
Carina Organics is a Vancouver (BC, Canada) based company that makes vegan, organic, cruelty-free hair and body products. I tried out their Daily Citrus Light Conditioner and love it! I enjoy using deep conditioning products before I shower like coconut oil and hair masks, so this light conditioner is perfect to accompany that routine. Plus it smells amazing!
4. Backwoods Soap and Candle Co.
I’ve been burning Backwoods Candles all throughout February. It’s an addiction! They are soy candles made on Vancouver Island (BC, Canada), and I love supporting local hardworking businesses! I got four for $24, and they are incredibly scented. I personally love Lavender, especially to wind down in the evening. Vanilla Bean is another nice one if you like sweet scents.
I’ve been loving using these products knowing no animals have been harmed in the creation of them. I’m surprised how easy it was to transition into these new products!
Spread love and happiness always.
Until next Sunday,
xoxo

the magic of positivity

I had a friend recently ask me how I stay so positive, and it really made me think! Here are five ways I stay positive day to day, and when issues or problems arise:
1. Gratitude!!
I think it all comes down to your internal mind frame. If you’re thinking about the negatives in your life, you’ll find them, and they will dwell in your mind. Same thing when it comes to positives!
Starting your day with gratitude is a great way to be more positive. As soon as you wake up, or while you’re eating breakfast, write down 3-5 things you are grateful for. It’s such a simple thing, but practicing gratitude every morning will change your mind frame. It will help you glide through your day with a more positive perspective.
I enjoy using an app called The Happiness Planner, because each day there’s a section for you to write what you are excited about that day, what/who you are grateful for, and a reflection about that day. It really changes your thinking from “what do i have to do today”, to “what am I going to do to make today great”.
2. Smile, just smile.
So easy, yet so effective. The simple act of smiling at someone walking by can not only lift your day, but brighten their day as well.
3. Be your own energy in the world.
Create magical joyous energy within yourself. Don’t let others dictate how you will feel. You can decide to have a amazing day. Often times we allow others to push their sad feelings, or frustrations onto us, and while its okay to talk with them and empathize, its also okay to realize we don’t have to carry that feeling ourselves. Just breathe and move on with your day, centring yourself and your energy.
4. Be so kind to yourself
This is a big one. Do things that make you feel happy and vibrant. Take care of yourself. Get lots of sleep. Don’t judge yourself to harshly. Let yourself make mistake and remember that its okay not to be 100% all the time. Self care is so important, and it’s about understanding yourself and the daily practices you do that make you feel good. We much first show kindness to ourselves before others, and this is not in a selfish way. It’s about knowing yourself, and respecting yourself.
5. Silver linings
I had a really great conversation with a new friend about silver linings. Even in the gloomiest situations there are silver linings. You may not see it at first but hope is present in every dark situation.
Everyone’s got ups and downs in life, but how we respond to them is what really matters. Riding the waves of life with joy in your heart is a pretty incredible experience.
Stay vibrant my friends.
Until next Sunday,
xoxo

eco-friendly period products

Seeing as it’s almost Valentines, I thought I’d brighten your day with a period post. This year, I’ve been extremely interested in reducing waste in all areas of my life. A huge waste contributor is period products. Women typically go through 1-3 boxes of tampons or pads every month, and there is so much packaging in each box. It really adds up! I’ve found that there are quite a few great alternatives to regular period products, and it can be really easy to make a switch.
1. organic tampons or pads
This is the first step towards a greener period. Organic tampons and pads are biodegradable and used from recycled cotton, which is much better for the planet. They are also so much better for your body, as they don’t contain toxic chemicals such as chlorine, chlorine dioxide processing, or pesticide treated cotton. A few great brands are the honest co. and natracare.
2. diva cup or menstrual cup - 100% green!
Okay, woman to woman, the diva cup is LIFE CHANGING. I’ve honestly never had a better period experience in my life. I gave it a try a couple weeks ago and I was blown away. Not only can I go about my day to day life with no period concerns whatsoever, but it is 100% green, no waste whatsoever, and made from medical grade silicon and not harmful for your body at all. You only have to change it every 12 hours! Plus you don’t have to spend $20+ on period products every month. Honestly menstrual cups are so underrated, and I think most ladies are terrified of them. But just give it a try. It will save you so much money and time in the long run!
3. period panties or thinx
I admit, this ones a little different. I myself have not tried them, but this brand is actually really cool. Its called shethinx. Their website explains how Thinx work, and I honestly think it sounds much better than pads. If you are a pad person, I would recommend giving these a try. Thinx are reusable, eco-friendly and look and feel just like regular underwear. They are pretty much foolproof. Thinx can also act as a great backup for your tampon or diva cup. Plus they have so many different styles and options for all your period needs.
4. The RETA (reusable tampon applicator) + organic tampons
The RETA was designed by the people who created Thinx. It’s a great way to transition into sustainable period products if you’re a tampon user, but not quite ready for the diva cup. The RETA is made from medical grade silicone, and is completely reusable (think about all the plastic you will be saving!!). Online at shethinx, they also have organic tampons available for purchase with your RETA. The RETA is expected to be available for purchase March 2017 (get excited!!).
I also found a great video explaining what’s great about reusable period products by Arden Rose.
These earth-friendly period products are a great way to reduce waste, save money and take control of your period choices. I want to encourage you to take control and feel the empowerment of making these smart, effective, eco-friendly, modern-day choices.
til next Sunday,
xoxo

why I love fruits and vegetables

Hi friends! I hope you’re enjoying your afternoon as much as I am. I love a good lazy Sunday before the start of the week. Seeing as i’m enjoying a fresh green juice, I’m feeling inspired to share with you why I choose to eat a plant based diet, and my journey since then.
Over the past year my diet has changed significantly, and my relationship with food in general has improved, for the better. These changes have boosted my physical health, my mentality, and my lifestyle. I’ve also discovered my passion for health and wellness.
What sparked this change was moving out and living on my own, while going to school full time. I had to meal plan, buy my own groceries, and cook meals all by myself. For the first time, I was confronted with the challenges of budgeting and deciding which kinds of foods I was going to buy.
I had always been a conscientious eater, and enjoyed making healthy food choices, but felt like I didn’t know how to fully nourish my body. A few months into the school year, I stumbled across a documentary called Cowspiracy on Netflix. It talked about how much damage the meat and dairy industry is causing our planet, and our bodies. It explained how eating a plant-based diet, high in fruits, vegetables and legumes can not only boost our wellbeing, but contribute to the vitality of the world.
This movie made me rethink my food choices, and what I considered to be a well balanced diet. Within a few months, I transitioned into a vegetarian diet, and was very interested in a 100% plant based diet, but it felt like too much work, too overwhelming, and I wasn’t sure where to begin.
In May, I started working at a organic, raw vegan cafe. I learned so much about raw food and veganism there. It’s so amazing being surrounded by people who love eating healthy, real foods, and have so much knowledge about the benefits of plant-based living. Plus their love for life and vibrance is incredible!
After a few months of working at the cafe and learning more and more about nutrition, I decided to do a 3 day juice cleanse, and then start eating a 100% vegan plant based diet, with no expectations and without putting pressure on myself to be perfect. I was honestly just curious about how I would feel, since I’d heard so many incredible things about eating a vegan diet.
No lie, the juice cleanse was difficult. I felt tired and sluggish, and couldn’t turn to food for comfort. But I was not expecting how completely revitalized I would feel after the cleanse. I felt like I was floating, I woke up ready to conquer each day, and had so much energy and zest for life. It was truly amazing. The way I was able to continue this feeling was by eating a plant based diet, high in fruits and vegetables.
Continuing to consume a vegan diet was also easier than expected. I had lots of smoothies and salads, and for dinner I had black bean burgers, and grains. I ate until I felt satisfied. I no longer felt like I needed to restrict the amount of carbs or calories I was consuming. I learned to listen to my body, and what it needs, instead of overstuffing or underfeeding myself and feeling gross and malnourished.
Fruits and vegetables truly bring life! They contain so many nutrients our bodies crave. It’s anything but boring! There are so many amazing vegan recipes online, with delicious sauces and dressings. Smoothies, packed with sweet bananas, tropicals fruits, and greens are an incredible start to your day. With the right toppings salads don’t have to be boring, but incredibly savory and satiating. Warm dishes, like soups and stir frys, are perfect on a cold day. Plus, there’s practically a vegan alternative to every meat and dairy item. Coconut ice cream is great treat for a hot day. One of my favourite websites is www.ohsheglows.com. She has recipes for any occasion. In fact, I made vegan Christmas dinner for my family this year, using her recipe guide!
Eating plant based makes me feel like I’m a part of something bigger than myself and my needs/wants. I believe my eating choices have an positive impact on the world. It may seem like a small/trivial choice, but its more than that. Veganism is not something selfish. It is about being brave enough to step out of the norm and make your own choices, knowing the difference it will have. It is about educating yourself. It is about having respect and gratitude for the world around you and in the process, you become healthier and happier.
Be brave, my friends <3
xoxo

10 ways to practice self care: winter blues edition

As I’m writing this blog post, it’s the middle of January, and it’s been raining and grey almost every day for the past month. And when the sun does come out, temperatures become unbearably cold. It’s honestly a lose-lose situation and I can feel myself longing for a sandy beach in the sun far far away.
On top of that, I’ve been feeling much more aware of the weather, and the affects it has on me this year. Last August was one of the best months of my life, and know it was at least partly because the sun was shining almost every day. So many of my positive memories are linked with warm weather, but I still need that vibrant, upbeat mentality in the wintertime. It helps with staying in the zone, pursuing your ambitions, and even just to get out of bed in the morning.
Here are 10 things I’ve been doing to stay positive and feel vibrant throughout the winter season:
1. Listen to uplifting music.
Great tunes always make a gloomy day better, especially if they are upbeat and happy! Putting on positive playlist first thing in the morning is like starting your day off on the right side of the bed. Sometimes it’s hard to leave the confines of warm blankets in the morning, but music can be just the energy boost you need. I highly recommend getting Spotify. They have just about every genre of music, and some killer playlists. I’ve been listening to the playlist Sunset Vibes recently and it’s the perfect combo of positivity, with tropical upbeat vibes to put me in a hopeful mood, no matter how I feel.
Here’s the link to Sunset Vibes:
https://play.spotify.com/user/sonymusic/playlist/6bfxfMIcYKN4ce6XQOxoqY
2. Actually go outside.
This may seem like the opposite of what you want to do. Going outside, where it’s freezing and rainy doesn’t seem like its going to make you feel better. I get it. But I promise you, it’s amazing what a little fresh air can do. Go for a short walk to the mailbox and take some deep breaths, and appreciate the weather for what is it. At a time where we rarely get outside for more than a minute, it’s so important for mental clarity and feeling physically rejuvenated! I recommend getting outside for at least five minutes a day. Get a friend to go with you if you need the motivation!
3. Create your happy place.
It’s so rewarding having a cozy, warm space in your home that makes you feel relaxed and at ease. Whether it’s your bedroom or a different room, I suggest starting with a completely clean space. Add cozy decor like soy candles, soft blankets and pillows (or even a heated blanket!), a couple good books, a diffuser, or a go-to tea. Make sure the lighting in the room is soft and warm, and add little lights like lamps and firefly lights. Creating your happy place helps you feel warm, comfortable and safe. It’s the perfect place to start your morning, or end a long day.
4. Exercise, exercise, exercise.
I admit, it’s hard to feel motivated to get your body moving in the colder months. But it warms you up from the inside out, thats for sure! I like to do pilates and yoga. Even light yoga and stretching is a good place to start. You can do pilates youtube videos in your home, or join classes. Hot yoga is an excellent way to get your sweat on, plus it feels like you’re on a tropical island! There are so many other ways to exercise, so choose what gets you excited and ready to move!
5. Take hot baths.
Warm baths are a lifesaver during wintertime. Up your bath-taking game by making it an experience. I like to light candles, put on relaxing music and pop in my favourite Lush bubble bar. Baths are a great way to pamper yourself and give your body love. They can be incredibly comforting after a tough workout, or a chilly evening.
6. Get creative!
For me, nothing feels better than getting in touch with my creative side. I love to sing, so playing the ukulele and singing gives me a boost of passion and energy. Doing something that brings you pure joy and makes you feel accomplished is one of the best ways to beat the winter blues. Choose anything that makes you feel inspired like painting, playing music, writing, dancing or even colouring!
7. Treat your body to nutrition.
The colder months are also the time of year sicknesses spread around, which contributes to lack of energy and feelings of sluggishness. To prevent illness, I recommend eating as many fruits and veggies as possible, cutting out processed foods and sugars. Some natural illness fighting foods are fresh ginger, fresh turmeric, apple cider vinegar and lemon juice. Add any or all of these to hot water to stay healthy during the sick season. Another great remedy is a healing broth with garlic, ginger, coconut oil, onions, turmeric, coconut milk, lemon juice and cayenne pepper.
8. Get as much sunlight as possible.
As it is such a rare appearance in the winter, treat it as a special occasion when the sun comes outs! Go for a walk, or sit in your window as the sun shines in and truly appreciate the warmth the sun brings.
9. Meditation.
Meditation is a great way to breathe through negative energy and understand yourself better. It can help to ease your mind and heart. When your feeling down, take 10 minutes and turn on a mediation video. I really like mindful meditations on Youtube, because of the calming nature of the videos.
Link to the meditation videos:
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCFlcx_5HUbSh6hsl3ZMKZkw
10. Surround yourself with people you love.
One of the most powerful ways to stay vibrant in the winter is to surround yourself with vibrance. Talking to the right person can make a gloomy day bright again. Make time for these lovely friends and family and you can brave the cold with them. We are winter warriors and we will conquer the storms and snow together.
Til next Sunday,
xoxo

an intro into cruelty free, vegan cosmetics

Happy 2017 and welcome to my first blog post! I hope this year you experience more love and joy than ever.
One of my 2017 new years goals was to completely rebuild my beauty collection with cruelty-free, vegan products. This is super important to me because I want to continue to evolve in making conscience decisions that will benefit the world, and not harm it. Every time I run out of a product, I’m going to replace it with one that is completely vegan and cruelty free. To make this easier, I did some research into makeup companies and complied a list of some cruelty free brands and the vegan makeup they offered.
This was harder than I expected.
Most brands I researched were cruelty free, but said nothing about their products being vegan. Many people assume cruelty-free products are vegan, but that is definitely not the case. Cruelty free means the company does not test their cosmetics on animals, or buy any products from companies that test on animals. Vegan means that the makeup itself doesn’t carry any animal byproducts in it, such as honey or milk.
I came across a couple great websites for learning about vegan and cruelty free beauty. www.crueltyfreekitty.com and www.logicalharmony.net . They have guides and info on how to shop cruelty free and vegan at drugstores, high end brands, and online.
So far, I have found a small amount of vegan, cruelty free products that look appealing, affordable and accessible for me. To start off, here’s three that stood out to me:
1. Hourglass Cosmetics - www.hourglasscosmetics.com
Hourglass cosmetics is a great quality makeup line that is completely cruelty free, and carries many vegan products. You can buy Hourglass makeup at Sephora, plus, if you look on their website you can find out exactly what makeup is vegan. Their ambient lighting palette looks amazing if you are looking for a glowy highlight!
2. Pacifica - www.pacificabeauty.com
Pacifica has got some beautiful skincare, perfumes, makeup and hair products. They are 100% vegan and cruelty free so you can’t go wrong. I recently ordered their stellar gaze mascara, so I may do an review on some of their products in the near future.
3. Lush - www.lush.ca
I’ve been obsessed with Lush for YEARS, so I had to include it in this post because they are cruelty free AND vegan. (they label their vegan products with a V) If you are a bath taking, face mask wearing, self-care queen like me, you must stop in to a Lush. They have gorgeous smelling bath bombs and shower gels. Plus, if you’re in need of a cruelty free skin care routine, Lush is the place to go. They have cleansers, toners, moisturizers and everything you’ll need for healthy, glowing skin.
I’d love for you to join me in this makeup bag upgrade project. Making these kinds of conscience decisions truly impacts the world, for the better, and it’s amazing what a difference it can make.
til next Sunday,
xoxo
