I've got this overwhelming fear that everyone else knows exactly what's wrong with me except me, but everyone's too polite to say anything so they just watch me self-destruct instead.

I considered myself "narcissist bait" before recognizing that I contributed to the pattern. Once I asked myself, "What do you find attractive about a narcissist?" and my top answer is that they care about themselves. That guy that cuts vegetables and gives dating advice on TikTok said that people fall in love with suitors that can do things that they, themselves, are scared to do. It makes sense, knowing me.

I think about what Amy March said every day. When she told Laurie, "I want to be great, or nothing." And I think about how many people have erased themselves from the record and taken themselves out of the game too soon because of such desperate, willful ambition.

Every day I imagine a new way to run away, and every day I work a day job, and come home and devote all my free time to something that might not work out in the end. That's how I know every genuine creator goes a little insane, and that's how I know that every great creator has given a piece of themselves away with each artifact they hand-deliver.

Jo and Laurie were so close that they shared clothes. What the fuck?

"For the storyline" is a potentially toxic life philosophy but I almost died from a curable cancer because of medical bias so my life is already a shitty lifetime movie. Might as well. I say all that to justify my dating life because yikes.

The Mentalist (2008-2015)

Patrick Jane (Simon Baker) was raised with a group of traveling carnival workers, and trained to be a "psychic" by his father---who used his fine-tuned perception to scam people. Jane grew up, and continued the act, growing immensely famous (even helping with crime scenes) before taunting a serial killer by the name of Red John. Red John killed Jane's wife and young daughter.

Jane considers himself a Mentalist. He can read people. Most of the show is him pointing out small details that most people don't normally pick on.

Truly, it can only enhance your craft.

Plus...there's something attractive about a man that would kill someone with his bare hands.

2. Lie to Me (2009-2011)

I'm not as passionate about the storyline in Lie to Me as I am about Patrick Jane. I can tell you what love feels like—but you won’t believe me until you feel it, too.

Love is delusion. It is not patient. It is rarely kind. Love is self-inflicted blindness. It is ignorance, and arrogance, and at times, awful. It is the darkness. It is nothing short of war, filled to the brim with its tactics and strategies.

It is everything we have been taught to fear deep, deep in our Puritan roots which is why we settle over and over again because real love is not as it was sold by Disney.

And that’s why, more than anything, love is a choice.

Stop. Saying. That.

Stop telling little girls that they have no control over their hearts.

We might not choose who we’re attracted to. Me, personally, I love big hands and big noses (👀👀👀). We might lose control to butterflies, and blushing. I have. I once paid for a girl’s therapy after talking to her for a week and mentally planning our wedding, but eventually our hands find the steering wheel again and we make a choice.

The honeymoon phase passes, and we make a choice. We make a dozen choices. Over and over again. To be, or not to be. To match energy, or destroy it. To be there, or to disappear. To smile, or to scream. To beg, or to leave. To try again, or to commit to a life of being a hermit writer.
