I live in the fort we once built. You were smaller and smiled more. I thought about the revolving world less. I felt peace and ease and nothing could’ve changed that, until it was torn down, along with my peace and ability to breathe. You told me you hated me and never said sorry. I forgave you anyway. Because I live in the fort we once built. Where you smiled more. And I was filled with ease.

I am doing the most but I could be doing more.
Almost time to graduate,
I’m tugging at the finish line.
Pull me here, need me there,
my whiplash is a disease.
I am doing the most
but I could be doing more.
I need to keep pushing through,
but doing so makes me weak and faint.
My bones shiver,
My body cries.
Who am I
if I am not helping someone else?
My priorities are
not my own.

The sun is taking rest in the horizon.
A car backfires, echoing in the empty chambers of my skull.
Exhaust fumes crawl from the engine and my ears.
The breeze carries the black smoke away.
The sun has since disappeared,
resting in the hills beyond.
My lantern eyes and velvet bones guide me home.
I couldn’t follow through because a mirage appeared.
It kind of looked like you.
But that paradox was puzzling.
Yet still I stayed and pretended you were there.

My body is hanging closer to the ground than it usually does. My feet continue to walk, my hands preparing the shower. But my eyes are closed. My mind is asleep. The pitter patter of water falls into the tub. Steam fills the room and covers me like a blanket. This exhaustion has followed me since I was eight. Debacle, disaster, downfall, pushing me to the ground, its foot on my throat. Yet each time I clamored, cried, and clawed my way back up, and oh how it drains me. I live my life submerged in doubt and fear. The shower water pours over my face. My eyes closed. My mind asleep.

I am a tree, rooted to the space I exist in.
Stretch my limbs and touch the sky.
I never grew to be as tall as my friends.
They loom over me.
I quake in their shadows.
My mother was a willow
and my father an oak.
I was the apple of their eye,
they claimed,
and I didn’t fall far.
My leaves lean toward the ground
like my mother’s,
but my bark is rough and ragged
like my father’s.
I shiver when the wind says my name.

My body aches with the idea that I could’ve had a softer soul.
I wade through the days,
limping,
whimpering,
tearing up,
foaming at the mouth
because I feel less and less strong everyday.
In fact I am not strong,
I am only stubborn.
Too hard headed to take a breathe and put my broken down body in its bed,
put it to rest.
It’s begging for relief.
But there’s work to be done.
Despite my aching body.
Despite my tortured soul.
Despite the state of the world.
Who am I to keep persisting?
Yet here I am,
screaming,
wheezing,
sobbing,
a terrified,
hopeless nobody,
writing her words on the internet
hoping to be heard.
But never mind that.
