I think that Edwin and Charles can be 'better friends' after Edwin's confession partly due to the fact it was something playing on Edwin's mind and creating distance between them but also it's possibly Edwin's first moment of true vulnerability in front of Charles that he is putting himself in. (so hell doesn't count)

He still snaps at him a bit that he's being serious but everything in this scene is made to make him look vulnerable and powerless. The staging puts him below Charles as he's behind him on the stairs so Charles is looking down at him. He's wearing thin pale clothes, just one layer compared to Charles with his jacket and backpack there's a clear contrast. And Edwin's chosen to confess on the stairs to hell, it would be worst case scenario but if Charles had rejected him harshly he easily could have turned and left Edwin there. (obviously he would never but it's about the fact that he could of, Edwin gave him that power)

That whole scene is so contrasting to the rest of the show. Edwin is bossy and likes to take control on cases and as much as Charles isn't a push over, he seems happy to follow Edwin's lead half the time. So here where Charles has all the power, he's the one making the decision, it's a huge moment. We know Edwin is so put together and in control as a coping mechanism after having no control for decades so him giving all of that up in this moment, his voice breaking, blood stained and baring his heart, it's another layer to how vulnerable he's willing to get, just how much he wants Charles to know he loves him and how important and true it is.

And now they're 'better friends' because they're more equal again. Charles has many vulnerable moments throughout this season, some Edwin was there for and some not. They both had huge journeys to go on but Edwin was hiding everything happening to him away whereas Charles wasn't able to. Edwin in this moment knocking down all of those walls and showing Charles he wasn't untouchable, he was just like him is huge in getting their relationship back on track if not leaving them even closer than before.
