Day 14- Fire

Something dark creeps around Keith’s vision. It dances and forms wispy shapes in the air like charcoal waves. He can almost touch it, but if he gets too close it dodges his reaching fingers almost playfully.

This does not feel like a game.

His legs start running, toward or away from the darkness, he’s not sure, all he can think about is that fight or flight instinct tell in him to go.

He’s falling off a cliff and sinking into a pit of quicksand all at one and now his mind is telling him to stop and run and there’s danger on all sides but he can’t see it.

The blackness creeps closer until it stings in his eyes. He can feel it filling his lungs and his mind is taken by a dark haze. Finally, a sharp scent fills his throat and he knows it: smoke.

Keith sits bolt upright in his bed, expecting to wake in a cold sweat and realize that it was just his mind toying with him.

It was not. Smoke fills every inch of his room, he can’t breathe, he can’t see.

Something in the back of his mind asks, is this how dad felt right before he died?

No, nope, go away, not going down that tunnel right now. He’s already dug 30 feet deep into a spiral of fear.

A loud banging sounds against his door, and Keith is thrown into the past.

He sees his dad’s coworkers arrive to tell him what happened to Texas.

He sees the social worker take him far away from everything he’s ever known.

He sees fake smiles plastered onto faker faces telling him they would like to take him home, the same faces telling him he’s unwanted.

He sees cops there to rescue him from dark corners and sharp corners.

He sees kind men calling him out of his room and speaking to him from across a table over a warm meal.

He sees a scarred man telling him that the only family he has is gone forever.

He sees the fire from when he was younger. Texas turns to him and points out over the edge of the cliff they’re sitting on to a smudge of red and yellow swaying in the distance. “Those are dangerous. Fire is a great tool, but people like to forget how dangerous it is. It’s a double-edged knife, and if you’re not careful it’ll take everything from you.”

And it did.

He sees a whirling storm of fire unleashed from the very ship he flies. He tells himself he has no choice but to use this weapon, it’s become a part of him.

There’s a cold sensation on his shoulder. He looks up through bleary eyes to see fingers attached to a tan hand and an arm leading all the way up to a very concerned Lance.

“Are you alright? I heard you yell.” Lance is already checking him over for injuries through narrowed eyes, like he doesn’t trust that Keith would tell him the truth anyway. Not that he’s wrong about that.

Keith blinks a few more times until he realizes that he can see Lance’s face clearly. He whips his head around and sees not a trace of smoke anywhere in the room.

What?

“Where’s the fire?” he rasps out.

Lance snorts dryly. “That’s what I’m asking you, you blown up hippo-butt.”

Keith decides to ignore the insult.” He tips his head all the way forward until it rests on Lance’s chest. He notes faintly that the other boy’s shirt does not smell at all like fire. Was he just hallucinating then?

Lance cards a hand gently through Keith’s hair. “You’re so… you sometimes, you know that? Not in a bad way, but I don’t get you at all. You’re such an onion. Like Shrek,” he comments, wrapping his free arm around Keith’s waist.

Keith processed about 1/4 of that, but he gets the idea.

“It’s kinda ironic that you’re afraid of fire, huh?”

Keith’s eyes snap up to the blue ones watching him closely. “How do you know that?” Is there a space fbi? Can Keith report Lance to them for stalkerism?

Lance snickers at him. “Stop thinking so hard. You flinch away whenever Hunk mentions using flames for cooking, and you always try to suggest something else when Allura or Shiro tell you to use Red’s fire. Also, you asked ‘where’s the fire,’ and I feel like you’re the kind of person to only say that sarcastically. Which means you actually thought there was a fire, and you’re afraid of it.”

Keith should not be that easy to read. Is the space fbi still available? He’d appreciate if they would take Lance away right now, please, this is freaky.

Lance pokes his cheek. “Stop that! Your eyebrows are scrunching up again.”

At Keith’s glare, Lance pokes his stomach until he huffs out a tiny giggle out of his nose. It’s not his fault he’s ticklish, Lance needs to stop abusing this weakness.

Lance shakes his head fondly and scoops Keith up without warning. Keith wraps his legs around Lance’s waist to keep himself from falling automatically.

Lance has a stupidly smug smirk on his face all the way back to his room. He hums a one direction song all the way there. (Fine, Keith knows who one direction is, Harry Styles is attractive, get over it.)

Keith doesn’t notice that they’ve made it to Lance’s bed until Lance flops down onto it with Keith still in his arms, pinning the smaller boy to the mattress.

Keith squeaks (curse voice cracks) and struggles a bit before giving into it.

He feels warmth in his cheeks that blazes hotter and hotter until there’s fire across this ears and down his neck.

But more importantly, there’s a warm spark in his chest as well as the heat radiating off of Lance, and maybe, just maybe-

He can learn to be ok with this kind of fire.

As Dreamworks's deal with Netflix for exclusive shows expires (they first signed a deal with Hulu for exclusives and now seem to be given shows to them and Peacock), shows have begun to leave the service en masse. However, due to the nature of staggered contracts, many of these shows will not be leaving Netflix for at least a year, while others may have several years left on the service. What's on Netflix did some calculations based on when the final seasons were added and came up with some removal dates for the shows -

There are plenty of other expiration dates on that list, but these are the big ones I noticed, mostly because they were attempts at franchise creation that fell completely flat. Voltron's big-budget Amazon movie is due for a 2025 release in a best-case scenario (worst-case scenario is more Robotech-style development hell) and with the rollout of a lot of classic Voltron merchandise including the oft-mentioned Voltron beer, the plan to erase VLD from everything come the film release is well underway. Dreamworks doesn't seem to mind, since they're still the video distributor for DOTU on behalf of World Events Productions, their name is on the Voltron beer.

She-Ra is a similar story. The franchise is also with Amazon via Dreamworks, for a live-action show directed by one of the directors of the Watchmen TV show. Hopefully, whoever plays Hordak can chew the scenery as hard as Jeremy Irons did. It probably will air sometime in 2025-2026 best case scenario as well, just in time to see SPOP eliminated from everything (something Mattel is only too happy to facilitate given their release of classic She-Ra figures for their Masterverse brand of toys).

Trollhunters was meant to be a franchise but despite a lot of big names attached to it, it went absolutely nowhere and everyone seems to have disavowed the whole thing after the ending. So it's just getting tossed to one side.

The internet means IP gets recycled and discarded faster and faster these days. And these are three examples of shows set to disappear from the face of the earth, to the glee of the license holders.

Lance is so fucking annoying. Keith has decided that his mindset from when he was 18 (and sexually confused—actually, maybe just repressed?) is now superior.

Keith hates how Lance flirts with anything that even remotely looks like a woman. He hates how he jokes around too much. He hates how extensive his skin routine is. He hates how he can’t decide whether he wants to punch Lance or kiss him senseless every single time he wiggles his eyebrows as an attempt to flirt or recites a crappy one-liner at him.

His Things I Hate About Lance list is about to be updated, because they’re at yet another diplomatic party on earth (which is actually more of a “celebrating the fact that the universe didn’t get destroyed” party) and Lance is wearing a navy blue button-down shirt which is very much accentuating his muscles, and it’s causing his brain to malfunction. I guess the constant labor at the farm paid off, Keith thinks.

He’s also flirting with a lady who also seems to be extremely appreciative of Lance’s outfit choice. They look like they’re about to decimate each other in the middle of the room with how their eyes are focused solely on the other. Lance’s eyes flick over to him for a second before he just smirks at Keith—the smug fuck—then he focuses back on the girl in front of him before settling his hand on her hip and leaning closer, his voice a hushed whisper against the shell of her ear.

Keith just rolls his eyes. Not that he cares about who Lance sleeps with anyways.

“You’re drooling.” Shiro says, which earns him a moderately hard slap from Keith on his non-prosthetic arm. “You look mad, too.”

“Shut up.” Keith grumbles, because apparently his 14 year old self’s attitude is now the best way to go, “Go away.”

“Jeez, looks like someone woke up on the wrong side of the bed.”

“I said, shut it! Or else telling Adam you made out with Curtis.”

“Please, they’re probably making out with each other as of this moment.”

“Gross!”

“What are you, 12?”

Keith does not go ahead and answer that question, mostly because he doesn’t want to admit that he’s acting more and more immature as the seconds that he stares at Lance and the woman go by.

Shiro, who has been a spectator of Keith pining over the Red Paladin since the early days of Voltron, sighs, before ruffling Keith’s hair, “Please just try and talk out whatever this weird sexual tension between you and him is. For me, please? I’ve already constructed a customized shovel talk for him if you ever do get with him, and let’s just say updating it over the years—”

“Alright, alright! I’ll do it!”

“Thanks, child.”

“Child? Is that what we’re doing now?”

“Just go!”

Keith, both fortunately and unfortunately, does not get to talk to Lance until after the party. He walks around the ballroom, and multiple people tell him Lance was last seen walking out eagerly with a girl, so he waits until the next day to talk to him.

What feels unsettling is that how most of the people who let him know about where Lance has gone were talking in an almost…disappointed manner; like they had expected better from him. Which is ridiculous, because for starters, Lance doesn’t need to be all serious and on guard all of the time, especially since they’re celebrating the fact that they had won the war—in fact, it would be out of character for Loverboy Lance to not flirt with at least one person at a party. Secondly, Lance is basically still a kid. Sure, he’s been through some stuff, but he’s still 20 years old. He wouldn’t even have graduated college by now!

Keith gets that they are the Paladins of Voltron, and their duty is to protect the universe, but sometimes the expectations people have for them make them look like flawless, error-free machines who never make mistakes or miss a beat, when it’s far from that. They’re human too. They mess up plans like half the time (maybe not half, but you get the point)!

When he’s walking to Lance’s house—somewhere about a 5 minute walk away from the city and a 10 minute walk from his own house—he stops in his tracks.

What is he even going to say to him?

He can’t be flat-out, outright straightforward with Lance and say, “Oh, I’m kinda in love with you, and have been for the past 5 or so years, so could we stop this friends-with-benefits situationship we have going on and just cut to the real deal?”, but he also can’t be too vague with it.

Though, if there’s anything that Voltron has taught him, one of the things would be, without a doubt, is that you always have to be prepared to improvise.

He knocks on the cold wood, and just when Keith is about to reconsider even coming here, the door opens.

In the course of 5 seconds, Keith goes from knocking on a door to being slammed against that same door. Not that he’s going to complain.

“Sorry—” Lance manages in between kisses, “—about—” a kiss on his forehead, “—yesterday.” He kisses Keith gently on the lips, adding more pressure when the smaller’s arms come to wrap around his neck.

Just as Keith relaxes, he breaks the kiss, genuinely confused, “Wait, what?”

“It’s just that you seemed genuinely sad when I was flirting with her, and—” Lance attempts to explain, only for Keith to cut him off.

“Hey, don’t apologize to me for that.” Keith protests. “I was just jealous that you looked fucking amazing in that dress shirt and she was the one who got to have you. Besides, we aren’t exclusive.”

He expects Lance to loosen up—maybe brag about how he wooed Keith with his dazzling looks, but he sure as Zarkon and Honerva themselves does not expect him say this:

“But what if I want to be exclusive?”

Keith’s heart catches in his throat, eyes widening like saucers, “What?”

“I said,” Lance looks straight at Keith, his gaze piercing,

“What if I want to be exclusive?”

Oh, fuck.

Any galra!Keith x (normal/paladin) Lance headcannons ??

Okay, so basically, here's how it went down.

Lance, Pidge, Hunk and Shiro had all gone to space and found Allura, however this time, they found the blue lion with the alien signal tracking thing that Pidge was using in the beginning of episode one. They went to Arus, met Allura and set off to save the universe.

Allura becomes the initial red paladin in this one, following her father's footsteps.

During one of the Paladins' raids on a Galra base, Lance finds Keith in a cell.

In this AU, Keith went with his mom to space and joined BOM when he turned 14, though of course he's still mostly human, besides from furry ears, purple skin and yellow eyes (and of course fangs but we don't need to get into that).

Anyways, Lance frees him and leads him back to the blue lion. As soon as everyone sees him, they immediately start saying things like, "Lance, why did you bring a Galran with you!?" "Why would you lead them straight to Voltron" "The Galra killed my entire species!" all that fun junk, and Lance looks them dead in the eyes, and with his whole heart goes, "Because when I found him, he looked more human than anyone I've ever met."

Of course, Lance meant the way Keith had looked at him. He saw pure humanity in his eyes, he just knew Keith was good, he'd never been more sure of anything in his life. "He was alone, in a cell. The Galra don't do that to their allies."

anyways, time passes, Keith becomes the Red Paladin, and they all grow and learn to trust each other n stuff, you know the basics.

But, Keith and Lance grow especially close, seeing as Lance had been the one who saved him, the one that had defended him and stuck by him through everything despite him being Galran.

One day, they got caught in a crossfire between a Galra fleet and a planet involved in the coalition, and Lance gets hit. Though, Lance, being Lance, doesn't say anything and just keeps fighting. When the battle concludes, the Paladins go back to the Castle of Lions.

As soon as he thinks he's alone, Lance collapses and removes his armor. Because of how careless he'd been during the fight, the initially small wound had torn and become much larger, meaning that Lance was losing quite a bit of blood. If he had to guess, he'd lost about a fourth of a liter. It wasn't enough to make him dizzy, but it hurt like hell.

As we all know, I enjoy making them suffer a little, so naturally, Keith finds him on the floor by his bedroom door, and his gaze falls on the gaping slash on Lance's side. He immediately drops down and starts scolding Lance.

"Why didn't you say you were hurt!? When did this happen?! How much blood have you lost?!" He presses his hands over the wound in hopes of stopping the bleeding, he knows it isn't bad enough to be fatal, but simply the sight of Lances blood on his hands sends him spiraling with panic. It's an image that will be forever burned into his memory.

Lance can't find the words he needs to say, all that escapes him his a small, quiet "I'm sorry".

Keith picks Lance up and takes him to his room, where he lays him down and gets the first aid kit from his bathroom.

He stops the bleeding and patches the wound. It was something he'd had to learn early on when he joined the Blade of Marmora. He helps Lance sit up and then plops down beside him.

"I could have handled it on my own, you know.. I'm not helpless.."

"First of all, you were bleeding out on the floor! If you really had it handled, i think you would have already had yourself patched up! And second, being helped doesn't make you helpless, it makes you human-"

"What would you know about being human?"

There's a long moment of quiet between them. Keith is the first to speak again.

"You're right.. I don't know the first thing about being human.. But I do know you. And I know that you're strong, and brave, and you'll do whatever it takes to ensure the safety of those around you. But I also know that sometimes you can't do things by yourself, and that's fine, Lance. There's nothing wrong with needing help..."

"I'm sorry" he says, turning to look Keith in the eyes, "I shouldn't have said that. If anything, you're more human than any of us. I don't know how, or why, but you are. And I think-"

There's another silence, Lance debates whether or not now is the right time to be saying any of this, but this is Lance we're talking about. He's the king of bad timing.

"You think what?"

Lance takes his hands, his heart is about ready to break his ribs with how hard it's pounding. "I think... I think that's why I love you!"

They stare at each other for what seems like an eternity, Keith's eyes move back and forth between their hands and Lance. Neither knows what to say.

Eventually, Lance tries to let go, taking the silence as a rejection, but Keith then grips tighter and pulls him into a hug.

"I love you, too, idiot..."

"Wait seriously? Like, you aren't messing with me, right?"

"Yes seriously! And if you ever pull a stunt like this again, I'm gonna kill you myself, got it?"

...

"Yeah, I got it"

They sit there with each other for probably an hour before Pidge bursts through the door and shouts, "AHA! I KNEW IT!!" They turn their head and yell into the hallway, "HUNK, YOU OWE ME FIFTY BUCKS!!!"

Unlisted Fandom Challenge

Two days ago, at our last Unlisted Fandom Challenge update, we had a 3-way tie for first. Today? One of those fandoms has taken the lead AND a new fandom that hadn't had even a single signup before has jumped all the way into a 4-way tie for second. All of them are actors in a TV show.

You could actually explain Jason's death as his actor wanting to take a break from his acting career to focus on his day to day life. Maybe he went to college. And then years later he is asked to come back to the show as a cameo, but fans loved him so much, they asked him to become a permanent member of the cast again

I see you, and I raise, you: There was still a vote, and they voted for Jason to Die, and then Jason went off to live a normal life, but he had a glowup, came back for a cameo, and a lot of fans were regretting the decision to fridge him lmao.

Dick was really sexualized by the fandom growing up, so his advice to Jason to combat that was to be a little less appealing to the audience. (and it wasn't like Jason wasn't cute when he was younger, he just wasn't Dick Grayson, but Jason would take being hated by the fandom than having random pedos dox him)

But by the time Tim came around, they did the thing where they had like... an 18 yr old playing a 14 yr old (Tom Holland with Spiderman), (The Tim actor and the Jason Actor would probably be around the same age)

I love this idea, and it's giving this one Voltron Au that I read where they were all the actors of their characters and the Keith and Lance actors were Dating, but then they broke up, and Keith took a break from the show because he couldn't be around Lance, and that was his time with the Blade or whatever.

1. how many works do you have on AO3?

seven, but two of those are site skins

2. what's your total AO3 word count?

51,455, which is. so little. omg

3. what fandoms do you write for?

rn, exclusively batfam. i've also posted fic for bnha, and while i do think there's a solid chance i'll post more my hero fic in the future, idk when. i've also written for tmnt, voltron, and spn, but most of those never left my notebooks lmao

4. what are your top 5 fics by kudos?

penance - ghost!robins au where tim dies + meets ghost!jason, and metric tons of emotional devastation ensue. MCD tagged bc yk. tim wakes up dead.

adds up to less - my sole bnha fic, platonic bakudeku that spans from childhood to after their fight post-all might vs. afo, centered around the fact that izuku knows katsuki's mom is abusive

despite all his efforts - whumptober fill for solitary confinement, dami and dick!bats and pain

bile is sweeter - whumptober fill for safety net, dick & tim where tim gets seriously injured on patrol. ambiguous ending as a standalone, but also ended up becoming the prelude to penance.

i know (do you know?) - whumptober fill for delirium, jason & dick, jason & bruce, bruce & dick sick!fic where jason is sick and bruce and dick are at odds but trying not to be.

5. do you respond to comments?

yes!! i love responding to comments. i am really behind atm, bc 1) penance got way more attention than i expected and 2) the comments are so frickin kind and like i short-circuit.

planning on responding to some more tonight, i want to try and wrestle my inbox away from hitting a like critical mass point

6. what is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

hmmm. i think it depends, especially on how you interpret the end of 'bile is sweeter', but my gut instinct is 'despite all of his efforts'.

7. what's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

mmmm. none of them? jk jk, kind of. i think they're all bittersweet is the thing. maybe 'penance'? or ik(dyk)? actually no, it's def 'penance'. neither of them end super fluffy, (or fluffy at all? fuzzy at best), but like i personally think, as hard won as it is, 'penance' has a happy ending.

8. do you get hate on fics?

i have not yet!! shockingly.

9. do you write smut? If so, what kind?

cuephrase on ao3 does not have any smut posted

10. do you write crossovers?

no, at least not yet. i don't think i will?

11. have you ever had a fic stolen?

not that i know of 🤞

12. Have you ever had a fic translated?

nope!! i don't think i've written anything popular enough to warrant a translation haha

not yet!! i think it would be super fun tho

14. What's your all-time favorite ship?

uh. hmm. i don't know if i have one?? ships rank pretty low on my overall interest, relationships that stick with me forever and a day are siblings lmao. but okay.

overall, like regardless of fandom it's probs a tie between kyo/tohru from fruits basket and kabakura/koyanagi from wotakoi.

rn my top ship is timkon, no contest. love those two very much. platonic or romantic i am sat.

15. What's a WIP you want to finish but doubt you will?

any of them? all of them? i have one fic with like actual words written, everything else is percolating in my mind. i have a decent track record of finishing stuff i start...but starting is difficult. i'm trying to work on that tho!! i really love writing and every time i sweet talk myself into it i'm like omg why don't we do this more often. baby cue would be horrified at how little i write.

16. What are your writing strengths?

making people cry. at the ripe-old age of 7 i decided the best writing was the kind that elicited a physical reaction, which to me was either tears or laughter and i don't think i'm funny. so bringing the pain it was.

and dialogue. i'm super picky about my dialogue and i act out convos + read exchanges out loud. i worry sometimes that i like have too many "blah blah bla-" type lines, but like when people are arguing, nobody is getting out full sentences lmao. there's a balance to it, for sure tho

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

setting/description. i have the worst White Room Syndrome ever i fear. like, okay, so writing for me typically feels like i'm watching something play out and just recording what i see, and uh what i see is usually characters interacting. sometimes they're interacting with their environment but ehhhhh. so i have to make a conscious effort to have my writing not be talking heads interspersed with chekhov's guns

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?

i don't do it. too paranoid about it being wrong. i don't mind it when someone else does it, but if i was going to do it foreign language dialogue would probably be written like "<This is not English>." with a note at the beginning that dialogue in <> is X language.

19. First fandom you wrote for?

i was going to say tmnt, but then i remembered i wrote warrior cats fic way before i knew what fic was omg. stopppppp. i was like eight, i think? but like. consciously knew that i was writing fanfic? tmnt.

20. Favourite fic you've written?

hmmmm. this is probs a tie between 'penance' and 'ik(dyk)' rn, the former was just so much fun to write and the latter features robin!jason and dick bonding which i'm particularly fond of rn hehe this was sm fun!! no pressure tagging @androxys @librarylexicon @tevyaa, @coyote-nebula, @motleyfam and anyone else who sees this and wants to play!!
