Winter Break Goals/Habits/Things to Begin
So, my winter break begins Saturday officially, even tho I finish all my schoolwork by tomorrow/Thursday. I figured to keep me on track with my goal of being a better me in 2024, I'd make a list of some things I'd like to incorporate into my days during my 6 week long winter break! Not everything will be accomplished, but I'm going to try my hardest.
🩷 My Winter Break List 🩷
consistent workout routine 3-5 days a week
try out a pilates class (local studio)
study japanese/spanish every day (create a new routine for studying either)
consistent sleep schedule (10pm - 6am)
daily afternoon hot girl walks (30+ minutes)
daily gratitude journaling
answer a journal prompt daily
read every day, 1 chapter of a book minimum
pick up a hobby and practice it several times a week (drawing, crochet, etc)
daily morning and night skincare
daily meditation (in the morning)
educate myself on healthy financial habits
drink electrolytes daily
watch one episode of a TV show minimum (NOT American Dad - thats my comfort sho)
clean bedroom and do laundry often, weekly at worst
get ready for the day, every day (do my hair, wear clothes I DIDNT sleep in, maybe some light makeup)
eat breakfast every day
meet my protein goal daily
track all my habits daily
it seems like a lot, yes, but it is completely doable as some of these habits take 10 minutes or less and I have 24 hours in a day to fill up. I get bored very easy si if I don't set goals, I'll end up staying in bed on my phone all day long and that's not healthy or productive whatsoever. I'll include these in my daily challenge updates too to keep myself accountable!!
here's to trying ro be a better me!
til next time lovelies 🩷

so there's only an hour left of 2023... i wanted to write something about the year and how it passed.
it doesnt come back to me as much as i would like it to, i spent it working and watching lectures, reading discussion posts, and trying- trying so hard to write, only to lose myself to comforting daydreams that didn't challenge me, just buffered the world and let it slip away from me.
still, an inconclusive list of things, however small, that i did and i'm proud of:
make new friends on tumblr despite being someone prone to keeping to themselves
finished two more semesters of grad school
earned all the credits i need to graduate (cant say i graduated yet boooo)
started my seven sentences event and fulfilled some prompts; maybe i havent finished answering all of them yet but im very proud of the ones i have done
grew some potatoes!!
saw a therapist for the very first time and worked on myself
crocheted a very special froggie friend and started some wips i love
went on my first roadtrip with a friend and had as best a time as i could make it despite it being rainy 24/7 and being ill
learned more and more about archiving at work!! i know things now!!!
and i persevered, even though it was hard and i was empty and hollow inside. maybe it's a placebo effect, but i think i have words again. i have feelings deep in my bones, i have stories on my tongue, and i have not told them all yet. i can persist on here and i will persist; no matter what, i'm here to stay.
my heart is full!! my heart is heavy!! but my heart is yours!! i love you, my friends and friends-to-be!! a song for my mutuals who make my world a delight and full of color!! an ode to the anons who slip into my inbox and make me long to hold their hands!! wishing everyone a happy happy new year 🥳🫶🏻🍾
youtube
i want to acknowledge the people who ive talked to or interacted with who have touched my life deeper than they could ever know. i dont think i listed everyone and im sure that i didnt. whether you're tagged or not, if you follow me and interact, i hold you dear to my heart. even if you're inactive, i will think about you. and if you have left, i still love you. 🩷
snoopy anon, raccoon anon, @ttyls @babyjakes @eulalielatibule @sweetdreamsbuck @levans44 @worksby-d @eloquentreverie @rodrikstark @intrepidacious @thornsnvultures @punemy-spotted @boxofbonesfic @scrumptious-delusion @dc418writes @angrythingstarlight @krirebr @giorno-plays-piano @venusstorm @biteofcherry @ronearoundblindly @starksbabie @ghotifishreads @buckymorelikefuckme @needleandhammer @onsunnyside @rubythecrimsonwriter and all my beloveds who have moved on. river, ren, wherever you are i hope you're doing well.

Summer Goals 2024
Personal goals while i'm here
get back on track for my 12-book reading goal (starting a nonfiction book last month grinded my progress to a halt, gotta catch up) (prob w SJM)
crochet one (1) item of clothing (preferably in a public park, a la "the most interesting girl in the city" ofc)
learn mosaic crochet so I can finally make a Journey scarf (but the cream and gold one bc mosaic can only use two yarn colors at a time)
keep up with coding! probably just working on my game(s) for fun hehe
hit da club - technically complete 11 may
flirt with ONE man - complete 25 may
export all R code from my undergrad dropbox
clean up my undergrad gdrive
read Nightwing Vol 1: Leaping into the Light (2016(?)) (and also the rest of that run bc the pinterest images have me hooked omg (though apparently it hasn't ended yet which,,,, ugh is annoying))
if not Nightwing then the Hawkeye run which my photo-friend believes is what Nightwing was in response to - complete 24 may
start learning music theory
try regular workouts at home or at the campus gym to gain upper body strength and improve cardiovascular health
cut out/assemble the pattern for that dress i wanna make
go to a classical music concert
open a HYSA!!!
Academic goals
brush up on my chimpanzee knowledge (1-2 articles a week) to prep for the class in the fall
go through the bioinformatics lectures on youtube from the class at this uni which is no longer taught but is apparently excellent (??? hours per week)
set up my coding environment and learn how to do basic bulk transcriptomic/epigenetic analyses
histology!!! (also fill out my lab notebook omg)
learn how to fully use a citation software (should only take a week or so)
Goals for when I visit home
make an indexed pattern binder so i can see every pattern i have up front and stop buying new ones that do the same things as ones I already own
assign many/most of my fabrics to particular projects
finish the black half circle skirt (waistband, bound buttonhole, hem!)
floral sleeveless mock neck top (mock up first?)
finish the trouser mockup
play my uke
play my flute... and earnestly attempt improvisation
binge pjo binge pjo binge pjo binge pjo binge pjo bi
The sewing ones are admittedly a little ambitious, as always, but I think the others are very very very doable, if a little crowded. The most challenging will probably be keeping up with python, working out regularly, music theory, and also finding the confidence to flirt (but who knows? maybe I won't have to force it). I don't anticipate being able to hit them all (I never do!), but it's nice to have options.
I think if I want to hit a lot of them though, I'm going to have to be structured with my day/week. Set up various curricula, timelines, (flexible) deadlines. Plus, some of these goals are very short-term, and should only take a day or week at most. I can totally sketch out what gets done when, and should have enough wiggle room in case things need to shift.
(also i did have 2023 goals i just never published them bc i forgor)

MI6 Cafe Creators Tag Game
(Thanks for the tag, @emiliasilverova, this is my very untimely response lol)
We’d love for people to keep getting to know each other after this year’s 007 Fest, so we’re starting this tag game!
Rules: Answer the questions, then tag 3 new people to complete this. Also, tag the person who tagged you and @mi6-cafe so we can reblog your response.
Note that when we say ‘fanwork’ in the questions below, that could mean a fanfic, gif, fanart, headcanon, cosplay, crocheted work---any kind of fancreation counts!
1. What work of yours challenged you when you were creating it?
Everything I create, especially writing, challenges me in some way.
My part of Juggling Act, the 007 Fest Round Robin, was one of the most challenging pieces of writing I've ever had to write. I'm a slow writer, so having only 24 hours to come up with a coherent follow-up to what came before me was difficult, but very rewarding.
2. What is a fanwork you’ve seen which gave you a new headcanon about a character?
@jellymish-art's whole body of work, but especially pieces like this one, 100% sold me on the trans!Bond headcanon. I feel like trans!Q is a lot more common so I'm sharing some love for 007.
3. Is there a fanwork that you really want to make, but you haven’t started yet?
Many, but for the two that I think will eventually happen:
a 00Leiter fic during Quantum of Solace, based on their exchange at the bar
a collection of 00Leiter vignettes through the different incarnations of Leiter and 007, told from Leiter's POV
4. What fanwork of yours surprised you, and how?
No Longer My Concern, an alternate universe fic where M is a medium, set during Skyfall. I'd never remixed somebody else's fic before, but deadicateddeath's AU was so intriguing it almost wrote itself.
5. What themes/styles/subjects are common across many of your fanworks?
Angst, loss, and bittersweet tenderness. My partner described my style as "consistently smart and understated" and I strive for every piece to be worthy of that compliment.
6. What other fandoms do you create for, if any?
None at the moment. Other than Bond, I mainly write original fiction.
7. Is there an artist that you like to listen to while you create? Or one whose work always inspires you?
I'm not married to a specific artist, or collection of artists, but I often find myself coming back to Rammstein. Lots of angsty pieces were drawn or written listening to them.
8. Share a fanwork that you’ve found yourself thinking about weeks after reading/seeing it.
This edit of CR, QoS and Skyfall set to Somebody to Die For by Hurts. I've watched it dozens of times and it never fails to make me cry. Beautiful edit set to a beautiful song.
9. Finally, share where you post your works!

Yarn Bombing - Post Box Toppers
Postbox toppers are amongst the new creative craze that has captivated communities across the UK from 2022 to present. I live in North Wales on the coast and these toppers are dotted through each town and village. The purpose of these toppers is to bring smiles to the faces of the communities.
The image below is a photograph of 6 Geese Laying, created by twin sisters, Rachel & Ruth, in Rhyl. This topper was one of many odes to the classic ‘Twelve Days of Christmas’. They began creating their toppers during the first Coronavirus lockdown in 2020. The toppers use the skill and craft of knitting combined with crocheting. The sisters say that the idea came after Rachel spotted a dull looking queue of people waiting outside of her local chemist. She began thinking about ways in which she could cheer them up.
Each topper the sisters make, can take between 24 hours and several days to create, depending on the detailing and complexity. Between them, they have made a variety of scenes including, but not limited to, castles, boats, seagulls, soldiers and an octopus. Rachel knits, and Ruth helps to make the complicated structures or details such as the castles.
“Rachel and Ruth have made people smile over what was a really difficult and challenging time. People were using their lockdown exercise to try and spot the toppers, actively going out of their way to find them.” - Rhyl Major Cllr Diane King

I Fasted from Social Media for 24 Hours
I was tasked to take a full 24 hours off social media. This meant no Instagram, TikTok, Twitter (X), Snapchat, or YouTube. I'm always online. It's constant. I knew this would be a challenge, and it certainly was. Here's a breakdown of my day.
10 AM- I woke up around this time and said to myself, "This is the day we do it!" and then instantly opened Instagram out of habit. I was feeling off this day so I decided to skip one of my classes. I went to my morning class as per usual. It was weird to not check my DMs the second I had a free moment.
11 AM- I had lunch in the dining hall. I had brought a book but my friends joined me. I was so distracted that I didn't even think of going online. However, the second I was out of the dining hall, I opened Instagram out of habit.
12 PM- I was back in my dorm resting instead of going to class. My partner woke up around this time. When they're awake, I'm on my phone more often since we're long-distance. I'll usually scroll social media while I wait for a text back. It was an odd change up to my day. The hardest part of the whole day happened here. I had learned about a new topic and couldn't scour the internet to learn more about it.
1 PM- I spent roughly an hour browsing Etsy and book giveaways on Goodreads. I got bored after a while and decided to draw some patches for my partner. I found a podcast about the previously mentioned topic and zoned out for a good while.
2 PM- I moved on from the patch designs to working on my senior art project. I wanted to use what would have been class time to keep working. I forgot about social media during this time. It was delightful.
3 PM- In my notes I wrote when doing this, there are two words under this time slot. "Radium Girls." All caps. I had stopped working around this time because I couldn't stop thinking about the Radium Girls of the 1920s. I spent a solid hour researching them.
4 PM- I bent the rules a little bit. I do social media for work. Unfortunately, no one else could post our weekly Wednesday meme, so I popped onto Instagram, uploaded it, and closed it again. Simple as that. Part of me is disappointed looking back, but I see it as something different since it's for work.
5 PM- Took a nap.
8 PM- Woke up and instantly went on Instagram out of habit. Can you guess what I do when I wake up?
9 PM- I got food with some friends and played a video game for a long while. It was a lot of fun.
10 PM- I always get a little burst of energy at night so I worked on some homework. Not much else.
11 PM- I was still working on homework but bounced between that and chatting with my roommate. I got kind of restless around this point, wanting to go scroll online. I eventually gave up on that and watched Friends with my roommate.
12 AM- I've never watched so much Friends. My roommate went to sleep and I was left alone. I wanted to go scroll Instagram so badly. It's been my nighttime regulation activity since I was about 15. It felt weird to just sit around in the dark.
1 AM- Yet again I have only written "Radium Girls." Did more research around this time.
2 AM- I got ready for bed and played games on my phone until I fell asleep. It was a weird day without social media. My 24 hours wasn't done yet, but I was.
10 AM- I woke up again and went on Instagram. I was back online again as if nothing ever happened.
Final Thoughts- Not my favorite thing I've ever done. It certainly proved a point and showed just how addicted I am to social media though. I learned that scrolling is a pacifier to me. It's the stimulation and regulation my brain craves all the time. Being distracted and having something else (e.g., drawing, crochet, TV) to stimulate me is a good alternative. It was an interesting experience, but I can't see myself doing this outside of anything for a class though.

MI6 Cafe Creators Tag Game
(Thank you for tagging me, @spiritofcamelot!)
To some degree, everything I did has presented itself as challenging, one way or another. Mostly because a) I refuse to turn in sub-par work, and b) everything I knew was going to be easy had to be made more difficult by adding some challenge to it.
For example, I challenged myself to write “The Q With The Dragon Tattwo” within 24 hours. No one told me to do it, but I churned out the 2,710 words anyway.
And everything becomes challenging when you are stupid and ambitious. “No one has done that before? WELL, I’M GONNA DO IT.”
Which often results in dumb ideas being turned into even dumber things. Like “The Bidding” fanvid.
“Don’t do anything I would do, and don’t do anything I wouldn’t do.” -Tony Stark
2. What is a fanwork you’ve seen which gave you a new headcanon about a character?
Honestly, I don’t really headcanon things. Even if I do, I don’t follow them.
My headcanons are not necessarily inspired by fanworks, but more often than not they are just random crap that floats in my mind. (I mean, have you seen my headcanons?)
3. Is there a fanwork that you really want to make, but you haven’t started yet?
There are so many.
There’s a long fic, currently titled “Everywhere at The End of Time”, and the reason why it’s not completed is that it’s the fic that’s not supposed to fuck up. I’d rather take my sweet time about it than rush it and produce a product I am not satisfied with.
I wanted to make this paper theatre thing with Q in Q-branch during Skyfall. That project is currently in limbo. Not that it’s not started, but rather I have come to the conclusion that I can’t do it with my current abilities.
As well as other smaller things, let’s see... Pathologist AU, mage! Q and knight! Bond and other secret projects.
4. What fanwork of yours surprised you, and how?
“If You Have The Time, Would You Come by And See me?” was one that got increasingly complicated as time went on.
It was inspired by a song called 漠河舞廳 by 柳爽. And the story behind that song was that was an old man who stood in front of what used to be a nightclub. It caught on fire one night in 1980 and his wife died in the fire.
“如果有時間 你會來看一看我吧” was the first line of the song, meaning “if you have the time, would you come by and see me”. And the song expresses survivor’s guilt of the man, and how time has been unforgiving to him, living alone all these years.
Yeah...It’s a hell of a song.
It was surprising because the giffing process was FUCKING HARD. I had to compress it again and again and IT WAS STILL OVER 9MB LIKE WTF.
But ultimately I am pleased with the results.
5. What themes/styles/subjects are common across many of your fanworks?
Q, blue and sad shit
6. What other fandoms do you create for, if any?
I used to do stuff for Evangelion and Trigun before Bond completely took over.
I did some stuff for The Batman when it came out.
Just did some stuff for The Sandman too.
But believe me, my interests are much, much broader than this.
7. Is there an artist that you like to listen to while you create? Or one whose work always inspires you?
Again, there are so many.
Legit, if I have a mood and tone I’m aiming for a piece, I have a playlist of 5-8 songs on it. So I’m not gonna rec them all because it would be impossible. And I listen to anything and everything.
FINE FINE I’LL REC STUFF
King Gnu and Radwimps are two of my favourite Japanese bands. King Gnu’s “Chameleon” and “Prayer X” are great. Radwimps’s “Picnic” is one I often find myself mindlessly singing to.
Recently got into Saint Motel, Muse, Mother Mother, The Strokes, Mitski and others.
If we are talking about art... It’s also a long ass list of Twitter handles .
Chinese artists: Amuiiart, RDJlock, Chain_HN, woyaoCharlie, fromchive, sayhanawork, RuiRiell
Japanese artists: akagawa_sagan, rui4444, fyfyfy1000, 2964_KO, shokuen, sotanami, asmk_gengaten, toboso_official
Others: Kilgaaaaaara, _haga_nom, sundayjorge, KimJungGiUS, zcb1346, _elibaum, viv_tanner, davaja, chipkidd, TotinoTedesco
And many, many more. You can check by looking at who I’m following.
8. Share a fanwork that you’ve found yourself thinking about weeks after reading/seeing it.
I’m gonna share the one that I have consistently been thinking about for years.
Andddd... I can’t find it. I think the post is gone.
Welp I’ll just have to share another one
This is a Victorian AU 00Q fan art, but the title was “Skyfall Revisited”, a clear reference to Brideshead Revisited.
It’s just really good.
9. Finally, share where you post your works!
Twitter: 3NIGM4_4RT
AO3: 3NIGM4
Youtube: 3NIGM4
So I’ll tag: @emiliasilverova @bluebellofbakerstreet @silverbrume

NIFTY KNITTING - GAMEPLAY OVERVIEW 🧶
Gameplay was what I was most excited for with this pack. As an irl crafter + crocheter, this is the dream! ✨ (Still would like a hobby pack though, EA).
I ended up going a lot more in-depth than I thought I would, so obvious “spoilers” under the cut.
Tumblr media
I was provided with an early access copy of Nifty Knitting to review via the EA Game Changers program!
Tumblr media
Getting started with the knitting skill is as easy as plopping a bag or basket of yarn into your sim’s inventory and picking something to create! At level one, you’ve got the choice between nine different beanie variations for all ages.
I noticed my sims had a tendency to gravitate towards rocking chairs for knitting, unless directed to sit elsewhere. You can pick their knitting spot by clicking on any sittable surface and telling them to knit in the pie menu.
Tumblr media
Unfortunately, the bag or basket has to be in your sim’s inventory to do any sort of knitting. In my opinion, this sort of defeats the purpose of having yarn sitting around the home. It’s honestly a shame, since my apartment is covered in random bags of yarn and half finished projects. It doesn’t stop you from placing them for decoration, but it does make for some useless spending for sims on a budget. And honestly, what was the point of voting on what this looked like if we’re never going to see it outside of inventory?
Additionally, each sim will need their own basket of yarn in their inventory if multiple members of the household want to knit.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As your knitter progresses through the skill, more things will become available.
level one - beanies
level two - socks
level three - mailbox cozys, hanging plants
level four - rugs
level five - sweaters, the ‘teach to knit’ interaction
level six - poufs
level seven - decorations (cacti, turtle, octopus, penguin, llama)
level eight - toddler and baby onesies
level nine - sweaters with scarves
level ten - child toys (bear, grim reaper), mentoring sims in knitting
completed aspiration - yarny toy, yarny sculpture, ‘sacred knitting knowledge’ trait, bonus when teaching other sims, ability to dispel the sweater curse
I was honestly pretty disappointed that onesies require such a high skill level. I’ve really been looking forward to decking out all the babies in my 100 Baby Challenge in cute new clothes. Like I mentioned in my CAS review, I don’t foresee Day having the time to devote to knitting in the forseeable future, much less getting to level eight.
Thankfully, items are available to buy on Plopsy!
Tumblr media
According to the gurus, Plopsy can also be used on the computer - but I never even thought to try it. I was honestly surprised that it was fully functional on the phone, both for buying and selling items.
Buying something on Plopsy is just like anything else in the game - funds are immediately deducted and the item can be found in your inventory. When purchasing clothes, you’ll need to select the item once it arrives in your inventory and hit ‘add to wardrobe’ in order for it to appear in CAS.
I specifically tested purchasing baby onesies, and it seems like a mod I have prevents them from actually being applied to the baby. I have no idea which one, but I tested two onesies purchased from Plopsy in a CC free game and had no issues.
Failed item variations cannot be purchased on Plopsy - your sims will have to make those all on their own!
Tumblr media
Selling items on Plopsy is probably my favorite part of this pack, and has the potential to be a huge money maker! Most things your sim can craft with a quality value assigned to it will have the option to be listed online from the sim’s inventory. I was able to list paintings, woodworking sculptures, herbal brews, photographs, flower arrangements, potions, candles, and knitted items for sale!
One of my test sims knitted a sweater dress and the cost of yarn was deducted automatically from her household funds - §50. She listed the dress on Plopsy, and within 24 hours she had an offer of §747. 💰
After knitting and selling duplicates of several items, it definitely seems like the cost varies a bit depending on the buyer. But I was always able to sell at a profit.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Believe it or not, there are dangers to knitting! This pack doesn’t come with a new death, but instead a curse. In my opinion, this is a super fun change and I’m so glad for something different.
There’s a chance that when giving a significant other a knitted sweater, both sims will become cursed!
Oh no, you’re cursed! They say couples with the Sweater Curse are destined to break up, so be very, very careful. Maybe don’t try anything romantic for awhile, because it will not go well. The threads of fate can be cruel.
So naturally, I cursed Bob and Eliza and then spammed the hell out of romantic interactions. They were all rejected. Their relationship plummeted in the span of a few sim hours. I didn’t stick around to see if they would organically break up on their own, but it wasn’t looking good.
It’s worth noting that I was never able to get this to work while they were married, but the second I demoted them to dating they got hit with this nasty seven day long moodlet. So if you plan on gifting sweaters to significant others, it’s definitely worth completing the aspiration.
Tumblr media
As fun as the failed knitting items and the forbidden sweater look in CAS, there are consequences to wearing them in game!
The moment a sim puts them on, they’ll receive a negative moodlet:
Itchy Knits (From Clothing Item) It’s as if a thousand tiny insects are nibbling the flesh!
I’m a little disappointed that these aren’t feasibly wearable in game, but I’m sure someone will fix it with custom content. It does add another unique repercussion to knitting, though!
Tumblr media
On a more wholesome note, the ‘teach to knit’ interaction is absolutely adorable. 🥰 Knox sat down with Bee, his daughter with my simself, and got her skill all the way to level four!
Children can knit on their own without being taught, just like adults. But I have very fond memories of my grandma teaching me to crochet as a kid, so this was an interaction I was SUPER excited to see in the game.
Tumblr media
I still feel like this is a small pack as far as physical content goes, but the gameplay is pretty fun. Plopsy is an amazing feature, and I definitely see myself using it often! Both with buying and selling, I really feel like it adds another layer to the game and gives more self employment opportunities for sims that don’t want a traditional career.
There’s a bit of gameplay I feel like I didn’t get the chance to fully explore yet, but I’m looking forward to integrating it all into my game.
My initial reaction to playing this pack was disappointment, but I honestly think my expectations were too high. This is a stuff pack, it’s bound to be small. After a few days to sit and play around with it, the gameplay specifically grew on me. I still have a lot of mixed feelings - some things I really like and some things I’m just not crazy about at all (cough cough, buy mode. why did everyone vote in crazy pastels? it matches NOTHING).
But with tempered expectations in mind, I would ultimately recommend this pack for the gameplay elements alone - especially to crafters. As always, different people enjoy different things. If this style of gameplay isn’t your cup of tea, pass it up or wait for a sale!

The Mommy Myth: Mouthing Off to Dr. Spock (Part One)
Tumblr media
American Motherhood in the 1970s was undergoing a real revolution: the country had a 9% unemployment rate, 15% inflation rate, 18%-20% mortgage rates, and President Ford wanted to whip inflation and the most rapidly growing segment of the workforce was mothers with preschool children (Hi Joan Holloway and Kevin, Hi Joyce Byers and Jonathon and Will). In 1970, 40% of married mothers worked and in 1984, 59% of married mothers worked. In 1970, only 24% of mothers with a child one year old or younger worked and in 1984 that jumped to 46.8% Black married mothers were more likely to be in the workforce than white counterparts (won’t be surprised if Mrs. Sinclair had worked outside the home in contrast to Karen) and single-parent households increased by 79% during the 1970s and 90% were headed by women.
Back then there were few daycare centers, no maternity leave (paid or unpaid), no flex time, no after-school programs, and not the Family Leave Act (mothers still call in sick to watch a sick child) and the VCR and microwave weren’t widely available.
Tumblr media
“This generation of women, who are now approximately 50 years old and older, who raised kids in the 1970s and beyond--these are the ones who are great. It is because of them that companies even established daycare centers, that there are tax deductions for childcare expenses, that there is maternity and even paternity leave (however paltry), that there are now baby seats in supermarket carts. If you are one of these mothers, and your now grown children are even remotely functioning, stand up and take a bow.” The Mommy Myth (2004), Susan J. Douglas and Meredith Michaels
Media centering on motherhood, from women’s magazines to sitcoms, family films were all frozen in 1957. At the same time there was more research being performed on children and infants, to assist in advice columns for moms raising their kids in different circumstances than their parents raised them. But the columnists were often serving mom guilt and had stay in the kitchen attitudes and sitcom moms hardly got angry with their kids and were always soothing and gentle like Mrs. Brady and Mrs. Walton and unlike Flor.
youtube
Sitcoms were holding a smaller mom revolution: Maude Findlay (also a grandma), Florida Evans, Ann Romano (the OG One Day at a Time), and Alice Hyatt had feminist inspired barbs at their bratty kids, nosy neighbors, and men while advertisers came out with the supermom. Hollywood mostly focused on alienated young men like Dustin Hoffman and Jack Nicholson while movies targeting women mostly stayed stagnant.
One movie that focused on the misery of the mid-century housewife as she dealt with being economically dependent on her husband, mindless housework, how she was expected to put her needs and wants on the back burner, and of how men acted like they were so dumb. Diary of a Mad Housewife focused on Tina Balser, a Smith alumni who is married to a man named Richard, who manages to fuse together the worst traits of Ted Wheeler, Lonnie Byers, Pete Campbell, and Don Draper together. He’s an up-and-coming lawyer who preens and condescends and insists his wife cracks ice instead of serving it cubed and dictated Thanksgiving dinner (he doesn’t cook it though) and only wanted Danson Plum preserves on his toast and starts the film complaining about Tina being too skinny and her ability to do things the way he wants and dissed her ability to make a 4 minute egg to their bratty daughters (all the combined bratty traits of Nancy and Mike Wheeler and none of the intelligence, empathy, and passion that drives these characters).
The lesser known Barbra Striesand vehicle Up the Sandbox opens up with one mother telling another: “I’ve read all the child psych books. To be a good mother you gotta learn to eat shit” (few shit has changed it seems). Based on an novel by Anne Roiphe, the story focuses on Margaret a mother of two who loves her kids but wants to do more than stay home and is....pregnant again. She has wild fantasies that makes Doug Funnie look less...funny like debating with Fidel Castro about the status of women and having a love affair with him and blowing up the Statue of Liberty with Black militants or presumably confronting her husband’s secretary/co-worker if she’s having an affair with him. After they went to a party where busty young women fell over him because he was so interesting and he made a dismissive comment about a female Ph.D candidate who wanted to have one kid and go back to work, is where Margaret tells him off:
A woman like me works twice as hard, and for what? Stretch marks and varicose veins. You’ve got one job, I’ve got ninety-seven. Maybe I should be on the cover of Time---dust mop of the year, queen of the laundry room....(where she can’t live up to his colleagues or her mother) I’m a zero, a nothing” and when he said she can do more and be happy, she tells him off more “Did more? I sew. I squeegee. I spend hours waiting in line for a sale on baby sandals just to save a few pennies...I’m an errand boy, a cook, a dishwasher, a cockroach catcher, and you say I’d be happy if I did more.” Karen, spin that shit!
Tumblr media
Women’s magazines had a new challenge: so you gave advice for decades about how moms can beat diaper rash, crochet covers for your toilet seats, and make a birthday cake in the shape of a character your kid liked but now there are sentiments challenging the conventions of marriage and parenthood, what do you do?
In 1973, Redbook magazine had a poll saying 9/10 respondents knew women earned less than men for the same work, 3/4 thought the media degraded women, a large majority believed women were second-class citizens, and 2/3 supported the Women’s Movement. Also more of them were working or joining the workforce, even with small children and more were divorcing and looking for childcare and to pay the bills and wanted a break. The shithead experts said no the latter.
Mom’s can’t be overprotective but protective enough.
You can’t be over-attentive in your kid’s lives but make them feel loved and always wonderful.
You need them to be independent, but always taken care of.
Can’t be too strict or permissive.
You need to be light-hearted.
Those were the rules many mothers of Gen Xers and Baby Boomers were under (and still the same now). Dr. Spock was singled out, he was the most influential of these experts with his famous book coming out in 1946 (the first year of the Baby Boom) and his advice dominated the magazines in the 1950s and 1960s. He dished out mom guilt for working outside the home or not weaning babies before they were one year olds and that leaving kids with a “mother substitute” would make them needy (so not even date night?). Also you had to be bonding with your kids properly (all while moms were dealing with doctors up against the natural childbirth movement) and even an hour may not be enough. Also normal women were sad when kids weaned themselves off the breast! Any misstep in your kids will fuck them up!
Tumblr media
In Part Two, I will go over Bruno Bettelheim and the backlash against the Women’s Movement and the revolution in Motherhood.

May i blease get some fluffy hcs for Jason and Michael?
( you can always have some fluffy hcs! goodness knows, there’s never enough :’o) )
Jason Voorhees:
Jason has a fondness for homely hobbies. Knitting, crocheting, sewing, embroidery, gardening: you name it. Many of them remind him of his mother (you can’t tell me Pamela DIDN’T embroider her son’s name in all of his shorts and undergarments!) so they have a special place in his heart.
That being said, I can’t imagine those hands being the best with delicate stitchwork, but that’s where YOU come into play.
He could watch you for hours (when couldn’t he?) as your fingers wove darling, threaded scenes together. Even if you can’t see it, know his half-remaining lips would be pulled into a smile.
Be careful, though! Use a thimble! God forbid you prick your fingers. He’d be hovering over you in an instant, clumsy hands fishing for a band aid from somewhere and stilling any notion of you being “---fine! Don’t worry so much!”
Anything you make him, even if he doesn’t wear it openly, is almost always on his person. Oh, you crafted him a little keychain? Does he even have keys? No? Regardless, it’s in his pocket. You embroidered a handkerchief for him? YOU stitched these pretty red tulips and simple, darling leaves of emerald? It’s tucked in his breast pocket (if he’s wearing a jacket with one)
The cozy you made for his machete, however, will probably remain housed back at the cabin.
Michael:
There’s very little Michael values. He is his own person, his own entity rather, and you are but an obsession of his. His possessiveness lends to little romanticism, and to some degree, you don’t anticipate ever having any classical type of relationship. It’s MICHAEL, after all.
You don’t eat together. You never have. For the longest while, you wondered if it was because he didn’t like to remove the mask in front of you. That would explain it. He obviously does eat as your fridge is nearly always raided through.
You’ve long since learned that any leftovers you bring home quickly become Michael’s second-dinner.
The first time you see him eat, you have to resist the urge to laugh. He’s handsome, in the most wicked sense, but it’s not his looks that make the ordeal entertaining.
He scarfs down food like he’s a man starved. He shouldn’t as your pantry is well stocked 24/7. Fingers pluck the plate clean. His fork, if he’s indulging in the cutlery, moves at a speed unmatched while it scrapes ungodly squeals along glass. No matter how large a serving, it doesn’t take him longer than a few minutes to complete a meal. Ever.
When caught in the act, he simply stares you down, that subtle glower boring holes in an almost unspoken challenge. He dares you to comment about this private affair. He dares you to make even a motion towards his mask, his face, or if your wish for Death is high enough, the food HE’S collected.
But, if you play your cards right, you can work this scenario to your advantage.
You may remark, absolutely INNOCENTLY that it would taste oodles better hot and fresh. Such a shame he’s never around when you prepare supper. Terrible. A true tragedy. You may even be able to spare him larger servings, if, of course, he was present.
He sees your game. He’s no idiot.
Yet, his interests are his own. Why he indulges the silly notion would be far above you. The next day, he’d hover as you cook. Poised in the doorway, every movement he’d track with predatory interest. He’s not a picky eater. Never has he been. What you do, what you spare during, is taken immediately to abate some of his growing boredom.
You may ask him to help. He will not respond.
“Could you set the table?” Silence.
He practices minimal patience about the cooking process itself, and though he never poses the question, he has an air of demand to him, like he’s trying to rush you.
If his patience hasn’t entirely thinned, he may sit down with you. If you’re the quiet type, he may eat within four minutes rather than horking down everything in one. That’s the best compliment you’ll ever get from him. Though he would seem tense, if you look carefully, there’s signs of satisfaction.
Shoulders, though naturally stiff, aren’t rolled forward, a shadow of pounce lingering through his powerful form. Eyes are narrowed, but his flickering glare has dissolved, falling instead into a state of focus as he tastes. Hands no longer clench and unclench, twitching with anticipation to act now. If your meal really delighted his taste buds (and he’s in a good mood), he may even throw his plate in the sink. Maybe. Maybe. Careful what you wish for, though, because he may literally toss it and then you end up with more mess than its worth.
But, the biggest “hint” to his satisfaction is that it would become a semi-regularly event. He’d likely learn your regime when it came down to cooking and timing it to where he isn’t stuck lingering during the actual cooking process, but rather, end up arriving just as dinner is ready. Where he goes, you’ve no idea. However, at the end of the day, he’s yours.
Even Michael Myers falls under that age old saying: quickest way to a man’s heart is through his stomach.
