this is my comprehensive guide to acne

my qualifications: years ago i had a guy take a picture of me and play connect the dots on my face (it was actually pretty funny and i made fun of him too bc he was 5’1 so it’s okay)

first of all don’t pop ur pimples for the love of god, i know everyone says that but what could likely happen is a short term problem can turn into a long term problem with scarring and damage to the skin barrier due to trauma to that surface layer of the skin, instead use things like pimple patches, most brands that make those cute colorful ones don’t really stick to the skin and so they are practically useless, a pimple patch is supposed to mimic a hydrocolloid bandage which draws liquid out of a wound, if the patch isn’t sticking well to the skin because you didn’t clean the area of skin first or the patch just isn’t very high quality again it is going to be practically useless, also micro dart patches are great, the micro darts go into the pimple and so not only are u drawing out the sebum, u are also putting whatever acne fighting substance into that pimple, my favorite brand for these is hero cosmetics, u can also use a hot/cold compress on the pimple to draw it to a head which will help ur products work better on that pimple

now for the nerdy stuff, chemical exfoliants are ideal at least for me because they aren’t physically abrasive like a scrub which again can cause trauma to the skin and then possible scarring, the ingredients that u want to look for that will chemically exfoliate the skin and help acne are benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, glycolic acid and others, u don’t need expensive products, pay attention to the ingredients and find one without fragrance and has the ingredients you want, and for acne scarring other than the ones i mentioned which are more focused on helping acne but also can help scarring are vitamin c, niacinamide, azelaic acid, vitamin a and others, my favorites are panoxyl products with benzoyl peroxide, and ordinary has some good things for glycolic acid and others

now the way u treat ur body can have a big impact on ur skin, i won’t tell u to drink water bc i think someone might stab me for it and i wouldn’t blame them but rlly it won’t hurt, fueling ur body and having a balanced diet can be huge, this doesn’t mean cutting things out for the most part it means adding things in like healthy fats and protein, this can help balance hormones which are huge factors in acne, also if u have a period u can consider going on birth control, again it can rlly help balance ur hormones and talk to ur doctor about one that specifically has been known to help acne, now if u can go to see a derm it’s a good choice, they can prescribe treatments at a higher concentration than u can get over the counter, they can also give u things like antibiotics which can be very beneficial and aren’t likely to have side effects, but they might recommend things like accutane and spirolactone, these are more likely to have side effects and u mostly can’t get anything like it without a dermatologists permission, this will likely mean blood tests, pregnancy tests and regular visits to check up on ur overall health because they can be very abrasive treatments

finally, wearing sunscreen and keeping ur skin moisturized are going to be huge, sun exposure can worsen acne scarring and most of these treatments are very drying so on top of sun exposure ur skin is also constantly being dried out, if u are nervous about breaking out from a sunscreen then do ur research on the ingredients and others experiences, also u can get tinted sunscreen or bb cream with SPF in it so that u can have some coverage of acne or scaring while also protecting ur skin from further damage

i’m sure i missed some things so if u have questions i’ll do my best to answer, i know how frustrating this can be which is why i made this post, remember that the way that u look is the least important thing about u and that u will never see urself the way others see u, it isn’t even close to as big of a deal as we think it is just like any other physical insecurity

Realistic Ace Trappola + Headcanons

Okay so getting straight into it, this is my first post about my headcanons and realistic versions of twisted wonderland characters and the first one being introduced is *drumroll* Ace Trappola! Ace fans, you eating good tonight my chickies (that sounds so weird if u dont think of chickens right away LMFAO).

Sidenote: When headcanoning Ace and all my other characters, I take both factual and some of my personal thoughts/beliefs of the character to construct my headcanons.

So for Ace, its evident that I gave him acne due to reasoning such as his diet (fav food being cherry pie and mentioning his liking towards burgers) plus he is literally a teen boy that also has no women in his life and stereotypically the mother is the one to bring up looks as an issue, so without this Ace probably would have never gotten the right treatment for his acne.

He’s already a red head so I added on that by giving him freckles. Also, it's known that redheads are more prone to acne, so another note as to why I gave him acne.

For his features for a realistic rendition, I went with a heart shaped face (because Ace’s card suit is hearts) but his widow's peak is hidden beneath his bangs. He has a snub nose shape which is quite round and slightly upturned. He has thicker eyebrows cause we all know bro don’t give a shit about his appearance.

For his hair I went wild, it's extremely fluffy, a bit curly and like shoulder length when wet. Bro has had like two haircuts his whole life and probably smells foul. I also tried to keep to the original style pretty closely without it looking really weird like bro came straight out of an anime.

I didn't draw the bodies for any of them but Ace is more lanky with long legs and a rectangular body shape, but he has pretty big feet and hands.

Yeah and he's got a light British accent gang I’m sorry 😭 – he uses slang often as well.

Personality and backstory headcanons + a bit of character analysis:

Okay so Ace is one of the very first characters we meet in the game and a good one at that, a lot of people just put him in the category of “dumb friend with one brain cell”, and yes that's kinda true but every person had a reason to be the way they are due to personal experiences. We know in canon that Ace has always lived with his father and older brother but due to the literally no backstory on his mum, I’m saying his parents are divorced which he has much more time with his dad, also by his mannerism being so straight to the point and not sugar coated, this could be due to him being raised in an only male household. Which could also hint to why he “didn't feel committed” to his former relationship in middle school, he was so new to this type of love and got scared. After all he is just a teen, cut my boy some slack. (#1 Ace defender)

Due to this relationship with his mother and seeing how his parents fell out of love, fought or similar, he’s very bad with women which is why he has only male friends. The only way he would have a girlfriend (or woman friend) is if they were not sensitive to his zero-filter way of speaking and even tell him off for it. (not me doing this since my yuusona is a girl 💀)

It's still mentioned that the whole family gets together around holidays (although this could possibly just mean his grandma and such and not the mothers side) so maybe the divorce wasn't messy and they just didn't love each other anymore, which happens all the time with quick relationships.

Ace is also pretty immature and not into deep and emotional conversations which is common with teen boys (especially around his age group). So not trying to hate, but all those scenarios made up with him comforting the reader and helping them feel better, in reality, he probably wouldn’t have gotten why you're so sad and not really know how to comfort you. Which is completely fine! He's not fully grown in body or mind and people need to accept this.

He definitely makes your mum jokes and sex jokes, bro cannot stop himself laughing when a teacher says anything sex related. He's highly competitive and will sulk if he loses a basketball game or bet with a friend.

Also despite being not very empathetic (not on purpose though), he appreciates the little things. For example, he’d appreciate you remembering his birthday or always having a spare pencil for him in class as you know he always loses his. He really appreciates those friends and even though he lacks in some areas, he will always protect them and stay by their side no matter what.

In conclusion, he's just some teen boy who's still learning about life and people. I had a lot of fun making the realistic design and giving him more depth as a character and I'll be doing this for the rest of the cast and after that maybe side characters?? Only if you guys want it though, I’ll also one day release my yuusona 😞. (she’s my queen get ready yall (hi i’m the 10/10 editor and assistant 😋)) (together, we are big brain)

Rottmnt ☆ Star Child AU Part 2

Trigger warning: implied slight gore, trypophobia, and mild swearing.

‘Kay so, Leo finds himself in very overwhelming mood after having starry highlights on his irises. When he heard a footsteps coming from outside his room, he was so hella worried that they notices that he might be awake and escaped, but he definitely heard a sound of his brothers arrived in the lair, so Leo then returned to his bed and pretends that he was sleeping, so his brothers wouldn’t notice that he was awake (Except for Donnie, he knows what was going on with Leo.).

Mikey, Raph, Donnie, April, Splinter, and Casey Jr. have arrived home, and Mikey and Donnie went upstairs in Leo’s room to bring the presents for him, except for Donnie, of course, has only a first aid kit along with him just in case. Mikey, of course, was very sad and scared if Leo was gonna die like this. Mikey then puts the two bags of presents right next to the doorway. Inside of the two bags, there were 10 sheets of unicorn stickers, a plushie, a sky-blue-colored tumbler cup, a unicorn hoodie, a mug with Leo’s name on it, and a picture frame. After that, Mikey then leave Donnie alone with Leo for a bit. Donnie then wakes Leo up by poking his forehead. Leo then wakes up like nothing has happened to him. Donnie then said “Are you alright, ‘Nardo?” “What the hell? I’m fine, Don-Tron. Nothing has ever happened to me, of course”, Leo responded. Donnie feels so skeptical about Leo’s answer to him, but plays it along, so he doesn’t get so upset so quickly. “Whatever you say. But me, Mikey, Raph and everyone in the lair was worry about you.” Donnie responded back. Leo then rolls his eyes, pretending that he’s alright. Donnie then checks on Leo’s right leg, and turns out he has 15 holes, with blood on them. Looks like Leo’s been affected by either the rocks or the shooting star, but theres one thing that exists called “Pockmarks”, they’re typically marks that caused by chickenpox, acne, scars, or any types of infection. Pockmarks cannot be dissappear or go away by itself, but treatment can usually help. Of course it can’t be the Krang One, because he was blown away when the fucking door closes, and plus, he didn’t fucking die, he was actually been defeated by Leo when was locked in the prison dimension. This infection was very unusual to Leo, because he never have this kind of marks on his leg before. Donnie then checks it again and sees bruises and a slightly opened-cut ankle that looks like a rock hit on it. “ I don’t think you’re okay, Leo.”, Donnie said. Leo then responds, “ What the fuck do you mean I’m not okay?! I’m alright now. Can’t you see my luxurious, beautiful face-“ “NO NARDO!! YOURE NOT OKAY!! And why are you swearing at me?! Who taught you that?!”, Donnie yells. “Don, I am okay-“ Leo says, as Donnie interrupts him. “‘Nardo, I swear if you scare me, our brothers, dad, April, and Casey like that, I’ll slapped your face!!” Donnie then starts to tears up, as he puts on a cast on Leo’s leg, but until Donnie notices a starry highlights on both of Leo’s eyes. That left him shocked, but still does not want to worry a bit too much. Leo then says, “ Donnie, I thought you hate e-“ “I-I-I’ts fine, just dont go and fucking kill yourself, okay?…”, Donnie says as he was about to cry. “Alright…”. Leo said, as Donnie then leave him in his room.

Leo then grabs his phone from his nightstand, and then starts scrolling through YouTube, until he found the video that is unusual to him. A live singing performance of Mira Starr, a 20-year-old Indian-English singer. He then clicked on the video, as he gazes at her performance. He starts to feel like he’s a fan of Mira as he kept watching a video of her singing performance.

Fun facts:

Mira likes samosas and butter chicken.

Mira’s birthday is December 1st.

Mira’s favorite color is light or hot pink.

Mira can speak 3 languages (including English), except she speaks a bit of Punjabi.

A beautician is following me for laser hair removal (I am 16 years old and I started about a year ago). My beautician’s boss once checked my hair situation, and she was surprised I still had so many. So you told me I might have PCOS. Then I got scared because I didn’t know anything about it, and I talked to my mom about it. She told me that in fact, especially before, I was "a monkey", although, while I felt uncomfortable with my hair, I never realized I had so much out of the ordinary. We’ll go deeper to see if the beautician was right, but in the meantime, I wanted to talk to someone about it, see if you know anything about PCOS, like how it affects menstruation or anything else.

Having a notable amount of body hair that's above the "norm" is called hirsutism, which is a symptom of hyperandrogenism, and both of those are symptoms of PCOS.

PCOS stands for polycystic ovary syndrome. Despite the name, you do not have to actually have ovarian cysts to have it, although it's likely.

Three main signs of PCOS are:

Hyperandrogenism (which can manifest things such as "excess" body hair, deeper voice, facial hair, clitoromegaly, acne, hair loss in certain areas such as the head--although, everyone's body processes androgens ("male" sex hormones) differently, so not everyone will present with as strong signs of androgenization, even if they have a high level of androgens in their body)

Irregular periods. This can mean a variety of things. Periods can be far longer than other's, such as over a week. They might happen less often in a year, happening in a time frame over than ~28 days for each. Some people might have much lighter periods than most people or even shorter periods, only a few days. Some people might have large blood clots or extreme pain. Endometriosis can occur with PCOS, which often causes extremely painful periods. Pain is not necessary for irregular periods, though. This can also affect your ovulation cycle as well as your fertility.

Polycystic ovaries. Ovaries can become enlarged or inflamed and have multiple fluid filled sacs that often cause pain (although they might not).

Hyperandrogenism, hirsutism, and PCOS often go hand in hand. It can be hard to tell if someone has hyperandrogenism or PCOS, in some cases, especially since hyperandrogenism is a symptom of PCOS and cysts aren't necessary to be diagnosed with it. Some people might have hyperandrogenism for no "real" reason, whereas for others it is believed their hyperandrogenism and PCOS have a medical link. There are definitely cases where these variations in bodies aren't inherently indistinguishable from the other. A medical diagnosis is often useful because it allows for treatment if the patient desires it.

So, to be clear, based on what you describe, it's incredibly likely you have hirsutism, in which cause you may have hyperandrogenism (which, in turn, is a symptom of PCOS).

It's completely okay to be scared. Unknown things are scary, as is learning new things about our body. PCOS may sound like a scary syndrome, but it is incredibly common. Many women and people live with it. Many intersex people view it as an inherently intersex variation, as do they with hyperandrogenism and hirsutism.

While it's important to note that there are gatekeepers who do not, and these people are frowned upon by the vast majority of the intersex community and are often perisex (non-intersex) people.

Some other effects hyperandrogenism/PCOS might have include:

Oily skin

Predisposition to being fat

Smaller breasts

Insulin resistance

Increased libido

Increased muscle mass

Visible Adam's apple

More ambiguous genitalia (ties in with clitoromegaly)

If you have any other questions, feel free to send them! You are not alone. I wish you much luck on your intersex journey. And this is just some unwarranted advice, but do your best to be confident in yourself and your body. Don't let people try to influence you to do things to it or change it, especially with permanent procedures, unless it's something you've truly examined that you want, and not because others have pressured you, told you it's necessary when it isn't, or because you've been overall socially pressured to.

And I relate to that monkey comment, lol. My mom has always called me her little monkey because I've always been super hairy (although in my case, I've always taken great pride in being called that). It's part of why I chose a Pokémon based on a monkey for my new icon!

Chapter 4: Medical Esthetic Procedure Contraindications

So you’re considering getting some medical esthetic procedures done. That’s hot! But before you schedule an appointment or consultation here’s a quick guide of contraindications to be aware of!!

What is a Contraindication?

A contraindication is a condition we look for in the medical field that serves as a reason to not continue forward with a medical treatment due to potential harm the treatment may cause to a patient!

Laser Hair Removal:

Herpes and Cold Sores: Can you get laser hair removal with herpes or cold sores? Yes! But only if there is not an active breakout. We do warn the clients that the lasers we use are powerful enough to cause a herpes or cold sore breakout to occur so please proceed with caution!

Retinol: Use of Retinol’s are a huge no no! It can cause severe damage, burning or scaring if a laser is used! If you are on Retinol please stay off of it for 1 week before your laser hair removal procedure.

Seizures + Epilepsy: If you have a history of epilepsy please refrain from getting any laser or light treatment as it can induce seizures.

Bacterial Skin Infections: Infections can spread to other parts of the body if a laser is used.

Impetigo: This highly contagious superficial skin infection is something we as your medical esthetician should be aware of before continuing with treatment.

Cellulitis: This infection of the dermis and subcutaneous tissue should be cleared before you continue with any laser or light therapy.

Folliculitis: Laser treatments are not performed in areas of folliculitis but several hair removal lasers have been approved by the FDA for pseudofolliculitis barbae treatment.

Fungal Infections: Ringworm and Yeast Infections can not be treated with laser or light therapy until cleared.

Viral Infections: Active viruses are considered major contraindications for laser and light therapy.

Shingles: If there is an active outbreak laser treatment will not be used.

Common Skin Warts (HPV): Although some lasers are used to remove persistent warts, they are still considered contraindications.

Atopic Dermatitis (Eczema): You will not be disqualified as a candidate for laser treatment, unless the outbreak is in an area of proposed treatment.

Open Lesions, Rashes and Sunburns: This includes open lesions from picking at the skin. Any unknown lesions or rashes will be considered contraindications. Sunburns are known to disrupt the skin barrier and are considered contraindications. Any suspicious lesions should always be evaluated by a physician prior to treatment.

Accutane: You must be off of Accutane for at least six months to a year, depending on a physician’s preference prior to treatment with laser or light therapy.

Immediate Post-Operative Face Lift, Blepharoplasty or Neck Lift: Treatment is avoided for clients who are in post op from these treatments until a physician has given approval for laser or light treatment.

Pregnancy and Lactation: Pregnancy and lactation are considered contraindications women who are pregnant or lactating, should wait after pregnancy + breastfeeding so a child will not be exposed before beginning or continuing laser or light treatment.

Laser Tattoo Removal:

Laser tattoo removal shares the same contraindications as laser hair removal.

Red Tattoo Ink: Red tattoo ink is known to be allergenic. If you have experienced an allergic reaction to red tattoo ink, be aware that another allergic reaction may occur if a red ink tattoo is being removed by laser.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Bacterial Infections

Viral Infections

Fungal Infections

History of Epilepsy or Seizures

Open Skin Lesions, Sunburns and Rashes

Microneedling:

Herpes + Coldsores: Please wait until an outbreak is fully healed! Estheticians can avoid microneedling the mouth area if you do have an outbreak but it is best to wait until the outbreak is fully healed to avoid any spreading.

Active Acne: Areas of active acne can be skipped over but if there is an all over outbreak it is best to wait.

Rosacea: Clients with vascular rosacea can receive treatment, but not pustular or nodular rosacea wait until the information has settled.

Atopy, Asthma, Hay Fever and Allergies: Any patient with a history of allergies maybe prone to urticaria, after needling due to the release of histamines.

Anticoagulants: Any supplements, known to prolong, bleeding time, may not necessarily be discontinued from treatment, but the risk of bruising increases.

Drugs and Supplements Associated with Photosensitivity: Any drug and supplement that can cause photosensitivity including Accutane is considered a contraindication.

Fitzpatrick III and Above: Those with darker skin tones are not disqualified from treatment but it should be known that skin will appear puffy, bruising, if present might be visible in thin skinned areas and erythema (skin redness) when super-imposed on brown, appears much darker. Patience with melasma or post. Inflammatory hyperpigmentation must understand that lesions will appear darker for several months before improving.

PSA: There are certain ingredients to avoid using when it comes to dermal needling. Ingredients to avoid include preservatives, fragrances, emulsifiers, emollient acids, dyes, coloring agents, and UV filters

Before receiving a dermal needling treatment, you may be asked by your provider about allergy or medication, history, blood pressure/medication, bleeding disorders, eczema, psoriasis, immune system disorders, keloid, scarring, major illnesses, heart conditions, anemia and a lot of other general medical questions.

Body Contouring

Pregnancy and Breast-Feeding

HIV/AIDS

All forms of Cancer

Undergoing Chemotherapy

Immunodeficiency

Lupus

High Blood Pressure

Uncontrolled Diabetes

Keloid Scarring

Excessive Pigmentation

Vein Inflammation

Steroid Medication

Chemical Peels + Laser Resurfacing

Sunburn

Recent Surgery or Scars: Wait 6 months

Open Lesions, Skin Diseases, Inflammation, Varicose Veins, Infection, Metal Implants, Metal Screws, Metal Contraceptive Coil + Prothesis/Silicone Implants: Area will be avoided

Antibiotics: Must wait until completed medication course

Depilatory Creams: Wait 2 weeks

IPL or Laser Treatment: Area that received laser or light therapy must wait 2 weeks before receiving body contouring.

Areas with Botox: Wait 3 months before receiving body contouring.

Areas with Dermal Filler: Wait 2 weeks before receiving body contouring.

Sun Tan: Will be avoided

Chronic Inflammation: Speak with your healthcare provider before proceeding forward with a body contouring treatment.

PSA: Before receiving body contouring, your hydration levels will be checked your body must be 40% or higher for your hydration level. Hydration levels below 40% can cause cat like scratch sensations when receiving body contouring. Which is why low levels of hydration are considered a contraindication and you must wait until your hydration levels are at 40% before receiving treatment.

this woman on tik tok got terrible chemical burns after using an expired acne treatment and then she got a horrible infection from it. she runs a skincare focused account and on a recent vid captioned it saying shes scared of skincare now, not to mention all the heinous comments people have thrown at her since she posted her first video revealing what happened.

anyways it just made me think about how unnecessary so much skincare is and how we risk a reaction anytime we put most things onto our skin no matter how safe it seems :( and how easy it is to mis-use many of these more specialized products such as that chemical treatment that we don't generally need or have any reason to use.

Im so fucking pisses that it took me this long to figure it out but i just realized like a few days ago that the source of my incurable breakouts was fungal acne this ENTIRE time. Literally no conventional treatments were working but for some reason that just didnt come to mind. Wish i coulf go back in time and beat my own ass. Anyway I started using ketoconazole and vitamin c tea tree oil etc and immediately its starting to clear up. Fuuuuck 😞 im scared some of these dark spots will never go away

Wait like you're 28 and still dealing with acne? If that's the case there is a solution but you'd have to give up alcohol entirely while on treatment and check up your kidneys .

If everything is healthy you can go to a dermatologist and get an isotretinoin prescription. I'm not sure if you love in America or not because while what I recommended works, if you're American it can be pricey. Prescription can also vary depending on country. Like I live in a country where the highest legal dose is 20 mg, there's a whole subreddit dedicated to isotretinoin called r/accutane.

Keep some moisturizers at hand and some vitamin e creams if you wanna go on isotretinoin, don't be scared of the purging process, everyone experiences it differently and for me it was mild. A course is 15-20 weeks, so if you think you can handle it,hit up your favourite dermatologist.

Lastly if you have any disorders be sure to Google if they're compatible with isotretinoin. I have OCD and while the side effects say depression and loads of other stuff I've been unaffected. The only side effect I get is getting sleepy so I take it at night.

I really hope this helped! Acne isn't just something I see as aesthetically unpleasing, I know how painful it can become (especially in hot weather) and how genuinely hard it can be to focus in life if your face is literally buzzing with pain.

I'm actually allergic to alcohol and think it's gross so I don't drink. My acne isn't too bad, but I still get random bumps often. I make sure to change my pillowcase twice a week, keep my hair out of my face, moisturize and use witch hazel facial toner, and don't drink soda and only eat chocolate when I'm doing my monthly bleeding.

I do have another skin issue called keratosis pilaris but there's not much I can do about it since meds and treatment for anything is expensive in the US.

I appreciate the tips though.

To anyone worried T will make you ugly or angry, from your local fat masc-presenting non-binary

Hi. I’ve been on T (not low dose) for 10 months.

Physically: it has squared my jaw a bit, I have grown a lot of hair: I now grow dark hair on my legs, arms, pits, and my face - and have found all easy to shave (it irritates my face a bit but I’m getting used to doing it right), and I have a lot of acne. My voice is a fraction lower and I’ve lost a good bit of my upper register. My legs got more defined, my weight stayed the same. I gained a little bit of upper body strength, my chronic pain stayed about the same, and my chronic fatigue stayed about the same. I’ve noticed bottom growth, and more than anything else it’s just sort of weird-feeling to walk for a little bit, lmao.

I’ve found myself to be less attractive in some ways, but almost all of those ways I can control (various hair) or were already present and now just have a more predictable schedule/just need more intense treatment (acne). Any unattractiveness I feel is vastly outweighed by everything else that changed. I’ve never felt more comfortable wearing revealing clothing. I regularly feel perfectly comfortable going topless as long as my breasts are covered somehow. I’m particularly happy with my legs and how much more comfy I am with my tummy.

Mentally: I have noticed a lot less anxiety, depression, and self-consciousness. I’ve felt more grounded to my body. I’ve not been more angry - I’d personally say I’ve gotten a lot calmer, actually. It’s much easier to handle my brain in general. My mood can swing, but generally it’s because I’m already tired and pretty similar to PMS anyways. It’s made me cry a few times, overwhelmed or extremely touched by whatever caused it. These mood swings happen kinda rarely, and they’re never worse than any mood swings I’ve gotten from ADHD, Anxiety, Autism, or PMS.

You’ll be okay. If you want to do this, then do it. Anything you don’t like, it’s okay. If what I’ve said is a dealbreaker, that’s okay too. But know that you’ll never be so fucking awful as the people who try to scare you away from helping yourself by calling transmascs ugly.

Remember that they don’t know you. They don’t know what you look like and they don’t care, more importantly. All they want is to keep you unhappy. Please don’t let them.

This is Factually Incorrect

You can still get pregnant while on T it's just less common.

Recent changes to laws regarding HRT (especially here in florida) have made the language surrounding getting a prescription hyperfocus on the possible negative outcomes of hormone replacement (acne, hair loss) seemingly to scare people away from using it.

Knowing this, please be sure to ask questions regarding your hormone treatment to your hrt Doctor or a trans person with experience.

Drops of black ink fall into the bathtub as Roland unravels the skin wraps Lee had wrapped him with. Lilian watches as he rinses off all the inky residue revealing the pieces of art across his body.

When Roland was ten he broke his arm, his mom got him a cast instead of a new arm because it was cheaper, he had drawn a shark on it and made the drawing into a permanent tattoo when the cast was cut off. At thirteen he was attacked by a shark that swam too close to the beach, that or he swam too far out. When he walked back onto the sand he was battered and bruised, he had scars that would still be on him today if they weren’t given to Nero and Connor. His step-dad told him it was karma for the things he did earlier that day, he didn’t even care that his step-son could’ve been eaten alive if Roland hadn’t beaten that shark to death.

Roland wonders why he still likes sharks, maybe he just never had the money or time to get the tattoo removed, or maybe it was the respect he had for a bigger monster out there; that no matter how awful he or his step-dad was, there was literal bigger fish to fry.

Roland curses himself, he’s thinking about his stepdad again, and how something could be worse than him. Admittedly dying to a ferocious animal is way worse than a few strikes to the back, but there’s a difference between a trigger-happy, abusive parent and a defensive, scared animal.

“Do you mind grabbing that second skin wrap over on the counter?” Roland asks Lilian as he thoroughly cleans his arms and legs.

Lilian goes over to grab the second skin. “Why are you covering it again, it’s too pretty to be covered.”

Roland laughs, taking the wrap from Lilian’s hands. “It’s not done healing, I just needed to get the extra ink off.”

Roland wraps up his limbs in the transparent gauze-like wrap before wrapping them again in blue bandages, he turns to the mirror to inspect himself, groaning at the sight of freshly emerged pimples.

Roland has the luck of a teenage girl when it comes to pimples, it’s like dandelions, there’s one, and then there’s a ton, and he can’t get them to go away as easily as his friends used to.

“You can use some of my face wash if you want.” Lilian eyes Roland.

“Ya sure? I mean, I don’t know if I should use stuff that isn’t really mine.”

Lilian scoffs. “Just because you’ve become possessive of your stuff doesn’t mean I have.” She pulls out an elastic and hands it to him. “Put your hair up, then it won't get in the way.”

Roland grabs the elastic and puts his hair in a high ponytail, a few shorter pieces fall back into his face. Lilian pulls out a specialty acne cream, apparently it’s supposed to pull out all the gunk in someone’s pores in a matter of four hours.

“Only put that on the spots that need it, or else you’ll wreck your face even more than it already is.” She hands him the tube, and she then goes for a bag of pimple stickers, placing some on her own problem areas. “Take your pick, you won’t want puss leaking out of your face when the treatment starts.”

Roland scoffs. “No offence, but I’d rather not have unicorns and teddy bears on my face.” To that Lilian rolls her eyes. “There’s some sea creatures in there if you dig hard enough.”

Lilian brushes her teeth while Roland places salmon and starfish on his face. “How’d you get it anyway?” Lilian asks, in reference to Roland’s acne.

“Chocolate pudding.”

“You’ve been eating that a lot.”

“It’s becoming a comfort food.”

And it really is, it’s a simple treat, but it seems like in any slightly stressful situation he’s gotten it. Back at the hospital when he had first woken up, in the support group, his mom had gotten him a carton of it as a treat when he got released from the hospital after the freakout with his meds. He supposes it’s what spam is to Hayden, but then again it was never something present in the basement, god forbid Sonia gets them anything nice.

However, Roland is happy that it hasn’t become such a big thing, last night he ate the last pudding cup he had in that pack of six. Admittedly having a cup almost every day isn’t the best, but if they were bought for him he should be allowed to have them.

“So what are you doing today?”

“Sleeping.”

Lilian gives him a look, staring him up and down. Roland scowls.

“What’s with all the attitude?”

She stays silent for a moment. “I thought you’d go get a haircut.”

“Don’t you need an appointment for that?”

“Leslie doesn’t get many customers these days, you’ll be fine.”

“Haven’t I had enough of altering my body this week?”

“I want to go outside you wet rat!”

Roland wheezes at the randomness of that insult. “What did you just call me?”

“A wet rat! Now go get dressed, and tell Mom we’re going out this time!”

Lilian waits outside on the doorsteps as Roland comes out the door, his hair still in a ponytail. As they walk out of the yard they’re greeted by Otto and Martha, who are out gardening.

“Hi dear, oh, what happened to your arms and legs?” Martha asks.

“Nothing, It’s just tattoo wraps.”

“Oh, are you doing the same thing that the other Recalls are doing?”

“Uh-huh!”

“Oh that’s lovely, are you taking your sister on a walk?” Martha peeks behind Roland to take a look at Lilian who clings to him.

“Apparently I’m getting a haircut,” Roland jerks the arm that Lilian holds onto, “I got called a rat.”

Otto and Martha share a chuckle, “Well, I hope you look less like a rat by the time your hair gets trimmed.” Otto jokes.

Roland and Lilian walk further down the street into the city.

“Do you know them?” Lilian asks.

“I had lunch with them last week, nice people.”

“I’ve never met them.”

“You should.”

Roland and Lilian walk down the street of the suburbs, every once in a while there’s a big tree overflowing onto the sidewalk, shading the path in which they walk. Sometimes there’s a swing hanging down from them. Roland has never noticed it, but it seems like the city has become more youth-friendly recently. Though, somehow there’s more anti-homeless architecture, and Roland is not necessarily sure if it’s meant to be anti-homeless, or anti-teenager. There’s a big puddle up ahead from the rainstorm last night, one of the many blessings in an Indiana summer, unfortunately, it’s not a blessing for the light-sleeping Roland.

When they get close enough to the puddle Roland hops over it, but Lilian jumps into it, splashing Roland in the process, wetting his socks.

“I thought you didn’t want me to be a wet rat.”

“I don’t, stop letting me make you a wet rat.”

Roland starts running down the street, hopping from side to side, avoiding the puddles while Lilian chases after him stomping through all the puddles. She eventually catches up to Roland despite her coordination, hugging onto his back.

“I guess you’re the wet rat now.” He laughs.

“No, I’m a mouse, a pretty one,”

“Of course,” Roland chuckles. “The prettiest one of them all.”

On the course to the hairdresser Roland feels Lilian leave his side, he turns around to see her eyeing dresses in the window of a tailoring service. She pats her shorts as if almost imagining it on herself, she then snaps back around catching up to him as he continues down the street, watching her.

Entering the salon the same bell rings as the door opens, before Roland can even look at Leslie's old desk, she’s already up in his face.

“Roland! I was wondering when I’d see you again!” She exclaims.

“Hi Leslie!” Roland responds.

“Come to get a haircut? It looks like you need one.”

Roland looks at his sister. “Lilian would agree with you.” Lilian nudges him in the arm.

“Well don’t waste any time, come sit down!” She gestures to her chair. Roland sits down in it, and she places a cape around him.

“So, do you still want that beach blowout?”

“I think I want something else.”

“No worries! Let me get you a magazine.” Leslie hands off a haircut magazine to Roland. “Boys these days like getting mullets, but honestly they look awful, at least the ones that they get.”

“I think it’s self-expression, ‘cause there’s no way they’re getting a girl with that cut.” Another hairdresser adds it sends a slew of giggles throughout the salon.

Roland points to a certain hairstyle in the magazine, “How about that one?” Leslie looks back at Roland, inspecting the hairstyle he points at.

“Huh, a short mullet.”

“Oh,” Roland looks to the ground. “I’m upsetting you aren’t I?”

“No, no, something like this could actually work for you. I think I’ll take it down a little at the back, and add a tinsy bit of length at the bottom.”

Leslie takes electric clippers to Roland’s hair, getting it down to a pixie cut. “I believe this belongs to you.” She hands Lilian back her elastic. Leslie escorts Roland over to one of the wash basins, surprisingly this freaks Roland out more than his experience at the tattoo parlour, because his head faces the ceiling and Leslie isn’t even telling him her next move.

“Oh April where did you get that top? It’s beautiful!” Leslie asks, looking in front of her.

“Thank you! I got it from a local artist! She gives half the profits back to the Rewind Ward near us.” April explains.

“Isn’t that the one who lost all three of her high school sweethearts to unwinding?”

“Yeah, see, so she dated the first one, then he broke up with her, then she got with the second one and he got unwound, then she got with the third one, then the first one got unwound, then a day before they were supposed to graduate the third got unwound.”

“Well, at least she only experienced heartbreak twice instead of three times.”

“The last one’s name was Zane right?”

“Yeah, Zane.”

It’s as if all the colour drained from Roland’s face, they’re talking about Valerie, he’s the first boyfriend in the unwound trio. Him, the guy he can’t even remember the name of, and Zane. One of the things that kept Roland sane at the beginning of his recall was that the two women he had hurt had good men to keep them company, Valerie had Zane and Risa had Connor. But Valerie didn’t have Zane, instead, he was unwound, he could’ve had so much, a loving girlfriend, and his place back on the varsity team, but instead he succumbed to the same fate as him. Roland can only hope that somewhere out there, Zane is kicking AWOL.

Leslie taps Roland on the shoulder, waking him from his daze.

“Are you okay hun? Sorry about them, I told ‘em to stop talking about it.”

“Yeah, no, it’s fine.”

Leslie escorts Roland back to her chair. “I used to remember when I had to use the little high chair for you, now I almost have to send the chair to its lowest setting.” She reminisces. She pulls out a size 2 razor and clips it onto the clippers, he folds over Roland's hair and starts going at the sides.

“Leslie, do you think I look like a yin yang?” Roland questions.

Leslie furrows her eyebrows, “That's a weird question to ask.”

“I don’t know, my tattoo artist thought I was one.”

Leslie sighs. “You see, hair is one of the many ways someone can express themselves. Here, you can get so many people from different walks of life with all the different sexualities. Sometimes the feeling you’ve got about someone is right, and sometimes it’s completely wrong, so I just chose not to assume anything.”

“But if you had to.”

“I wouldn’t.”

“But-”

“Assuming makes an ass out of u and me. Besides, if you really wanted to know why wouldn’t you just look up yin porn.”

“Leslie! Lilian is right there!” Roland points to Lilian, she rolls her eyes for the third time today. “I know what porn is Roland.”

“I feel like you shouldn’t.”

There’s another ring at the door, a muscular ochre guy around Roland’s age enters the building, he’s got his hair half shaved off with thick dreads on the other side, and he’s got piercing green eyes that cut right into Roland’s possibly no longer existent soul. He walks over to Leslie’s chair, inspecting himself in the mirror, he then turns to Roland, who’s currently getting the main part of his mullet done.

“Seriously, another guy who wants a mullet?”

“Yes, but he’s letting me make it look good.” Leslie puts her hand into Roland’s view, gesturing to the guy in front of him. “Roland, this is my son, Dante. You two used to have playdates all the time when you were little.”

“We did?!” Dante seems just as befuddled as Roland is about this new revelation.

“Yes, we stopped bringing you around when his mom remarried… no offence.”

“None taken, that was a good choice honestly.”

Out of nowhere, Roland feels an arm wrap around his neck and the side of his face is pressed against the side of Dante’s. It practically flusters Roland and he thinks that Dante has just answered his question about him being yin yang. “Hm, yeah you do look familiar, we’ve got pictures together in your scrapbook don’t we Mom?”

“Dante! Get off him, I’m trying to cut his hair!”

“Right, right, sorry…” He backs off.

Leslie finishes cutting Roland’s hair, in the end, she’s right, taking a little off the back and adding a little on the bottom does make for a nice mullet. Roland pays with some of the money from the envelope and he and Lilian start heading home.

“So, should I leave you alone for the rest of the afternoon?” Lilian asks.

“Ew, no, gross, I’m not doing that, and you already knew I wouldn’t!”

“Yeah, yeah, I just wanted to see your reaction.”

Roland finds Lilian leaving his side again, he looks back to her staring at the same dress as before.

“You really like that dress don’t you?”

“Well, not that exactly, it looks a little tacky,” She sighs. “I just want a big pretty dress, y’know?”

Roland blinks at her, “I don’t, I’m a guy.” Lilian scowls.

“Tell you what, for your eighteenth birthday I’ll try to convince Mom to get you a pretty dress.”

Lilian gasps, “Really!”

“I said I’ll try, that’s not a promise.”

“Thank you!!!”
