I just finished the natlan archon quest after putting it off forever and it was mind-blowingly mid but I think I realized what the problem is. There's no Yuri 💔
#☁️🌕☁️.txt#ok that's only part of the issue mainly the writing was flat and the characterization (ESP of mavuika) felt so... bland#like i watched minsleif's mavuika vid bc i felt like i needed someone to word it well and she was completely correct#she does TECHNICALLY have character flaws. but she never grows never changes and these flaws never affect the story in a meaningful way#we only see her being “wrong” ONCE and it's when capitano takes the metaphorical bullet for her#she's just not portrayed as interesting...#i would have loved to see a moment of hesitation and grief before she burned her mementos#a moment of abject fear and dread when only 4 heros were known#even in the private of her own space! other characters could have seen her as perfect! but even in her memory road scenes she still didn't#have much depth. like when she was explaining to her family her plan to leave and come back 500 years later#i feel like the little sister could've been a really good character to Show mavuika's inherent hypocrisy that isn't really touched on much#if her sister in that scene said something like “in natlan nobody fights alone and you're leaving us to fight ALONE” and mavuika sort of#floundered and maybe even snapped a little and there was never a good resolution UNTIL they met again in the final fight sequence#that would've been so much more interesting!! showing mavuika's hypocrisy and martyr complex having an IMPACT on both her and her loved ones#also a moment of showing the stress in moments of being alone. she's a perfectionist but she isn't perfect#the pressure Would make her a little crazy even if she doesn't outwardly display it#like she's an inverse to furina who was characterized SOOOO well#she had. SO much potential for the same#and we got a cardboard cutout 😕#AND on top of all of that there's no real yuri in natlan#there were moments a true himejoshi could spin a whole yarn from#but there wasn't any that wouldn't require an in depth hear me out#like jeanlisa eimiko beiguang clorivia these all went without saying pretty much#like OH yeah that's yuri obviously come on now#and having that dynamic adds tension and interest! it makes the characters more interesting#idk natlan rlly flopped hard sorry :( i liked the Lore i liked ronova and the lord of the night and everything#just the actual characters and dynamics felt so... uninteresting. paimon felt the most interesting in the whole aq#maybe kachina as a close second or chasca#or ororon tbh. both of whom i have character design gripes with but their writing was pretty good!#thinking abt it now sumeru didn't really have good yuri either but nahida and wanderer rlly carried the plot. but lowkey lumine and jeht...

What's you all favorite trio in Horizons? Could be a group of three characters tied narratively, or a trio that is more straightforward and established as friends, etc.
Mine is the trio of Liko, Friede, and Amethio.
#let's wait for the next ep of horizons.. together#feel free to tell me as usual. because i like seeing other perspectives and stuff. and i'm curious#either way. liko&friede&amethio is more of a narrative trio and it's been on my mind since ep 1. also they are three of my fav characters#when friede showed up and acted as a shield to protect liko and a wall to stand in amethio's way. there was no going back after this#friede and amethio's dynamics is also my fav alongside liko and amethio (liko and friede is also an angle i really appreciate!!)#i really like how both liko and amethio look at friede for their own different reasons that are a bit similar#and get something different from their relationship with him#similarly friede looks at them both for different reasons. and functions differently as a character for both of them#add to this friede's fascinating ties to their ancestry.. and the way all three characters play off of each other#i could go on for hours about this but the writing around them is so brilliant. makes me a bit insane tbh.#there is a lot of depth to it and new perspectives to consider and think about etc. very interesting trio#in the same vein of narrative trio. friede amethio spinel fascinates me a lot too#the connections between all three characters.. friede and amethio. friede and spinel. spinel and amethio. the way they push each other.#there is a lot to be said here too.#(amethio opposing them both at some point for different reasons. amethio and spinel being the only explorers friede has directly faced.)#(spinel keeping a close eye on amethio and friede. amethio and spinel reacting the same way to cap. etc. i could go on but it's so good.)#in terms of more straightforward trio: the original explorers (they are tragic and beautiful and i love everything about them)#and liko roy dot (great chemistry and i like the way their friendship is depicted and grows taking into account their individual characters#(i know i talked about more than one trio but it is what it is w tags aren't enough to convey the extent of my appreciation)#(this is the short version of things. basically the writing makes me go!!)#(and i like all these for lots of reasons. narrative significance. things to pick apart and analyze. etc. they're all fun to think about)#character notes#ref.

the thing is i very much understand the appeal of lupcretia narratively bc they are foils who betray each other and then forgive each other because the force of their grief and guilt brings them to an understanding and i also understand the appeal of blupcretia bc its a three person relationship who disagree on something major and split apart leaving one party feeling abandoned when the other two agree against her and what does that mean for the fact that the rest of their lives outside a horrible timeloop are supposed to start soon Because of that decision and disagreement like i get it narratively its interesting!! but here’s the thing: i just have an unshakeable belief that lup is straight
#+ w/ regard to blupcretia the appeal of that one depends on the Assumption that romantic relationships are prioritized#yk what i mean?#like its only really interesting if you assume they’re intending to also be life partners/prioritized in each others life#thats why the creeping feeling of betrayal in lucretia is interesting at all#bc she’s assuming the three of them are a Unit#like thats why its more interesting romantically than platonically (still very very interesting platonically)#but i really don’t think romantic relationships Are always prioritized and i especially don’t think LUP of all people does so#the most important person in her life is taako and he’s just chilling in this scenario LMAO#he has no skin in the game so even if youre like yeah lup DOES prioritize him over both her romantic partners it doesnt… add any depth#and taako and lucretia have their own extremely complex & interesting dynamic and that doesnt benefit from lucretia being w/ lup either#like i tend to think taako and lucretia were already pretty close w/out lupcretia being a thing so that doesnt lend any more complexity#+ all that's not even to mention that i dont think lup or barry as characters really have romantic chemistry w/ lucretia#like i cant imagine her being part of their relationship in any meaningful way#that and i just really do think lup is straight#taz#mine

I wish twdg explored more on how though human beings can become closer through awful times…..sometimes that’s not always the case
#I mean I know they technically do that in the games but it feels half-ssed#I feel like they could’ve made that comparison with comparing clementines new group in season 2 to her old one#and have internal turmoil over why her first group couldn’t get along like these guys#why they couldn’t stop arguing for two seconds why they wanted each other dead most of the time#why they coudnt stand being in the same presence of each other and wishing they could just leave without the threat of death#and also make a comparison on how much worse it could’ve gotten with season 3#show a group or town that is worse then both her groups#to really drive in the complication of something like this#and then with season 4 bring in a group that’s smart but naive maybe inexperienced#that way you can have all different types of groups to really round out humanity and how different people react in situations like this#and heck for the extras bring in more group dynamics that range from toxic to somewhat manageable#cause in the end twdg is about humans and humanity and how terrible it can really get BECAUSE of them#so why not drive that home fully#just a thought#my stuffy stuff#twdg#ideas#opinions#text#to add depth have that group not be as perfect as they seem let them have flaws that are and aren’t glaringly obvious to the character#have a character finally show their true colors and decide if it’s worth it or not(kinda like lily but less stupid)#idk I feel like it could’ve been cool#probably wouldn’t work as a long game though(then again the actual games aren’t that long to begin with)

my personal abby headcanons ⋆ ˚。⋆୨୧˚
soft!abby, wholesome!abby, character analysis 𑁤
✦•┈๑⋅⋯ ⋯⋅๑┈•✦•┈๑⋅⋯ ⋯⋅๑┈•✦•┈๑⋅⋯ ⋯⋅๑┈•✦
⟢ Her favorite color is pretty obviously green, but not just any shade. It would be that deep, lush forest green. The kind that looks almost velvety when the light hits it right. A muted, natural tone, reminiscent of forest foliage or moss after it rains, or the way pine trees look at dusk. Earthy, grounded, alive. It fits her: strong and calm, but also quietly vibrant. It's the color of resilience and growth, things she's learned to nurture in herself. Maybe it reminds her of early morning hikes alone, where the world is still and her mind finally quiets. Or of those summer days when she'd sit outside with a book, before her dad dragged her along on another adventure. It’s nostalgic and rooted in something meaningful.
⟢ Her love language is acts of service, she loves taking care of her partner. She won't say "I love you" outright, and grand romantic gestures aren't her style, but if she cares about you, you'll know by the things she does. She'll fix the door that's been sticking in your apartment without saying a word, leave your favorite snack where you'll find it after a long day, or show up unasked when she knows you're hurting. Her affection is practical, grounded. Rooted in effort and presence rather than sentimentality. She's the type to remember small details you thought she forgot and act on them in meaningful, quiet ways. If she really trusts you, she'll share a part of herself she usually keeps hidden- an old story, a vulnerable thought, softness in her voice. Abby's the kind of person who'll notice you're out of shampoo and restock it without saying a word. She expresses love through actions: cleaning your glasses, packing your lunch, warming up the car on cold mornings. She doesn't make a big deal out of it-it's just who she is.
⟢ I think she would appreciate/prefer curvier women. She’s not afraid of a fuller figure. That preference makes perfect sense for Abby, her physical strength paired with emotional gentleness, and her attraction to contrast and depth. There's something very grounded and emotionally moving about the idea that Abby, with her strong, capable presence and quiet nature, would be drawn to someone with a softer, curvier frame. It adds to that "protector" dynamic she subtly embodies, in a way that balances her. A kind of mutual softening. She would probably admire her partner’s body in the same way she admires a good novel — quiet admiration. Noticing how your body curves when you stretch, the softness in your arms when they're wrapped around her, the strength in your thighs, how soft your stomach is when they're lying in bed. There's something about the combination of a curvier build and emotional openness that would both ground and unravel Abby, like it gives her permission to relax, to be vulnerable, to feel. And maybe she has this quiet pride about it, too. Abby strikes me as someone who finds beauty in the realness of people. Lived-in bodies, strength in softness, comfort in closeness. She loves that your body feels like warmth, like home - and she would never want you to feel anything less than wanted in it.
⟢ Motherhood was never something Abby imagined. Not in the traditional sense. Pregnancy, baby showers, the domesticity of it all—it never felt like her. But caring? Protecting? That's in her bones. She'd be the first to kneel down and fix a kid's scraped knee or teach them how to throw a punch. She doesn't talk about the future often, doesn't dare picture it too vividly-but sometimes, when the world feels quiet, she wonders if she could build something safe. Something like home. Abby never really pictured herself as a mom-not because she doesn't care, but because she never saw a version of it that looked like her. Growing up, “motherhood" felt tied to things she couldn't relate to. Domestic softness, conventional femininity, the assumption that women were supposed to want it. And the idea of pregnancy? That's a hard no. The physical vulnerability, the loss of control-it's not something she wants for her body. But that doesn't mean she's closed off to caregiving. She already lives it in quiet ways. She makes sure her friends get home safe. She bandages cuts without thinking. She checks in when someone's been too quiet, making sure that they eat enough. She's protective, even if she doesn't call it that. “I can barely take care of myself." But if pressed, she'd admit she's not against the idea of raising someone, just unsure if that life fits her. She'd worry she wouldn't be enough. Or worse, that she'd mess them up. She's great with kids but insists she isn't, she’ll deny it every time. Children gravitate toward her calm, steady energy, and she has a soft spot for them (especially the shy ones).
⟢ Abby would naturally switch between dominant and submissive roles depending on the moment. Intimacy isn't about dominance in the traditional sense-it's about trust, safety, and connection. Abby might appear more dominant because of her physicality and presence, but emotionally, she's surprisingly tender and receptive. Sometimes Abby will lead-grounded, steady, protective-and other times, she'll melt under her partner’s touch, especially when initiated with quiet intention. It's fluid, balanced, intuitive.
⟢ She likes to leave love letters and sweet little notes. Words aren't her first language, not when it comes to vulnerability, but when she writes them down, they come out softer, more honest. Writing gives her the space to say what she means without the pressure of getting it perfect on the spot. She can think it through, let the emotions settle, then put them into something real and lasting. It's not constant, Abby won’t shower you with them, but when they come, they feel earned, like a piece of her heart is being offered in this quiet, precious way. She probably tucks them into books or leaves them around your room. A crumpled napkin in your backpack with a half-written poem. A sticky note that says "Drink some water. I mean it." followed by a doodle of a cat face. A slip of paper tucked into your notebook that says "You looked pretty when you laughed today. I didn't know where to put that, so here it is."
⟢ Abby knows the library shelves by memory. The spine worn classics, the quiet fiction no one checks out anymore. She has a dog eared notebook tucked into her backpack where she keeps a running list of titles she wants to find next. Independent bookstores are her soft spot-she lingers in them like they're sanctuaries, trailing her fingers along book spines like they might whisper something to her. She reads like it's the only way she knows how to breathe.
⟢ If you asked her sexuality, she'd shrug. "I like who I like." That's it. No big declarations, no need for clarity. She's comfortable in her skin, comfortable not being boxed in. She's had relationships with men and women, but women are the ones who linger in her memory. The softness, the strength, the complexity. She doesn't overthink it. She just follows what feels right.
⟢ She would gladly read to her partner until they fall asleep. She has a low, steady voice that makes even the most complex writing sound gentle. She'll read aloud while her partner lays curled up against her side, half-listening, half-dozing. Sometimes it's poetry, sometimes it's a dense classic she's re-reading. She never comments when you doze off mid-sentence, she just marks the page and keeps going.
⟢ Abby has no shame when it comes to food. You blink, and half your sandwich is gone. She'll look at you mid-bite and ask, "You were done, right?" She doesn't waste anything, doesn't get weird about sharing and will eat off your plate if you let her. In fact, sharing food is her version of casual intimacy. She doesn't say "I like you" outright, but she'll finish your fries like it's a form of trust. She's the type to finish everyone else's scraps like some human trash can. Can't finish your food? Fork it over. She's not picky and takes all the extra protein she can get. It's a leftover habit from growing up around tight resources-and now, it's just her way.
⟢ I envision abby as being one of those people who's always naturally warm, human furnace vibes, great for snuggling. She’s the kind of person you instinctively lean into on cold mornings, Your hands like icicles until they’re pressed against Abby's back or sliding cold toes under her leg. Abby would groan dramatically, pretending to protest. "You're trying to kill me" — but secretly loves it. She'll complain about it every time, but she always adjusts to make room, letting you burrow into her side like it's the most natural thing in the world. She gets hot easily at night- despite this, somehow she still ends up hogging the blanket every time (canon, see post boat scene). She sleeps sprawled out and somehow tangled in all the bedding. You would wake up practically clinging to the edge of the sheet while Abby's burritoed in the rest of it, looking entirely unbothered and warm as hell. I would tease her about it every time. "You're such a thief." Abby, eyes still closed, grumbling, "No l'm not." "You're literally wrapped in three layers." "Coincidence."
⟢ She gives the best hugs. Not the polite kind. The real kind-the ones that feel like you're being held together. Strong arms, slow breath, maybe even a hand that cups the back of your head if you're really upset. She doesn't hug often, but when she does, it's wholehearted. No half measures. People don't forget them.
⟢ Her and Lev take care of stray cats on Catalina Island in their free time. She's got a soft spot for the ones who don't trust easily. The scarred-up tom that won't come close, the tiny one that hides behind the dumpsters. She leaves food out, builds little shelters when it gets cold, takes the injured ones to the infirmary when no one's looking. The other fireflies joke she and lev have a secret army of alley cats. She pretends to be annoyed, but they’ve named every single one.
⟢ Her dad used to braid her hair when she was younger, now she does it for practicality but also because it reminds her of him. The braid started as a habit. Tight and utilitarian, keeps her hair out of her face when she's working out or running drills. But on some days, the ritual of it feels heavier. She remembers his hands, clumsy but gentle, how he used to say, "Hold still, kiddo, I'm almost done." She doesn't talk about him much, but the braid says everything. It's grief and comfort, muscle memory and love.
⟢ Just for funsies, I think her birthday is in January and she has a: - Capricorn Sun: Abby's grounded, serious, and resilient core. She's hardworking, responsible, and reliable, she probably feels safest when she's doing something useful or taking care of someone else. She values loyalty deeply and is slow to trust but steadfast once she does. Her practicality and stoicism come from here. - Aries Moon: Her inner world is impulsive, intense, and fiercely emotional. She likely feels things very strongly but doesn't always have the tools to express it, leading to her occasional emotional shutdowns or sudden reactions (like anger when scared). This is where her brave, protective nature shines, she'd throw herself into danger without a second thought for someone she loves. It also contributes to her dry, blunt humor. - Cancer Venus: Soft, nurturing, tender. She shows love by taking care of you. Making sure you're fed, walking you home, giving you her jacket in the cold. But she's cautious and slow to open up, protective of her heart. Once in love, she's affectionate in small, meaningful ways. She craves emotional safety and might feel overwhelmed by intense vulnerability, but she's deeply loyal and incredibly gentle with the person she loves.
⟢ She’s terrible at taking compliments, always brushing them off with a scoff or a change of subject, like kindness directed at her is some kind of mistake. She never sees herself the way others do, she’s her own harshest critic, quick to downplay her strengths and dwell on her perceived flaws. But beneath the guarded exterior and the self doubt, there’s a quiet strength and depth to her that few ever get to see. She's also terrible at asking for help. She'll power through illness or injury until someone forces her to rest. When they scold her for not speaking up sooner, Abby just shrugs like, "It wasn't that bad."
⟢ There’s a wall around her, one she built over years of disappointment and betrayal. Getting close to her isn’t just about persistence. It’s about proving, time and time again, that you’re not like the rest. She watches everything, quietly, measuring your every word and action, waiting for the catch. But if you make it past the defenses and show her you’re genuine, patient, and unshakably loyal? She’ll fold you into her world like you’ve always belonged there. And once you’re in, she’s fiercely protective. She’d risk everything for you without a second thought, even if she never says it out loud.

Thinking about Rise Splinter hate… it always makes me kinda sad. Like YEAH, it wasn’t right the way he treated the boys. But like, Rise is really good at expressing subtle familial dynamics, and one of the big ones for me is the fact that like… there’s always an undercurrent of “It’s complicated” to their interaction with Splinter. IRL, it always pisses me off to see people casting judgments on people’s relationships with their family, because you don’t know!! Yeah, they hurt you, but not everything’s black and white. It’s complicated. Because you love them, and sometimes you get to understand a little bit better why things happened as you get older.
In a matter of smaller importance, hate for him loses so many opportunities in his character… even things that might just be kinda off-handedly mentioned.
He fought for SEVEN years—give me Splinter with chronic pain. Splinter relating to his boys with their neurodivergence—it’s HIS fault they have it!!!
That was seven years of imprisonment, or even simpler, an abusive relationship. What did he learn from that? How did he change? What things are skewed in his worldview?
His childhood! We saw his relationship with his grandfather a bit, but how did Splinter grow into his dream of being a movies star? HIM BEING A MOVIE STAR. He was both a rebellious team and a literal celebrity, this guy probably took empyrean at some point without knowing it, just like. Recreationally or something LMAO.
I maybe just need more of his old man knowledge. Him being so loser-core was a great move by the Rise team, and I could SEE where his story was going—ROBBED. We were ROBBED.
splinter hate is CRAAAAZY when he's such an INTERESTING character who does actually have a lot of obvious depth. like he's goofy and he's objectively flawed as a parent but he does go out of his way to improve himself and LEARN throughout the show, and he does listen and apologize when he knows he's messed up. his issues are so similar to leo's actually, leo's a kid so he's got more leeway to be shitty but idk when people act like its endearing on him and not on splinter. splinter's hilarious free my man
on the other side of the coin i dont really like when people make him a perfect loving parent either,,, i think people going for all kinds of interpretations in order to serve whatever story they need is fine but i do prefer kind of messy parent splinter, i think its kind of sad to see him reduced down to bad or good. he LOVES his boys so dearly and he would NEVER intentionally want to hurt them, but he's quick to cast judgement when he's angered/feels disrespected (evil league of mutants comes to mind, but also in turtle dega nights when donnie first stops the tank) and he's really a lot more inattentive than he should be. but there are REASONS behind this, coming out of an abusive relationship, fighting in bloodsports against his consent for years, you could probably count the whole draxum thing as traumatic (its presented as kind of silly in the show, but considering what it lead to,, its a pivotal moment in the backstory. its one of those things that i reasonably feel can be recontextualized because its so essential) and then dealing with crippling body dysmorphia and being forced into the sewers with no company other than his children,, it really adds up
idk like ,,,, you can still be extremely traumatized and be a horrible parent. in fact trauma can be a direct CAUSE of being a bad parent because that kind of thing influences every facet of your life and if youre unprepared emotionally, yeah. but splinter isn't the kind of person to double down and become more overtly nasty when he feels cornered. if he gets the feeling that his kids are actually upset with him, he backtracks. this is actually kind of a key trait of his, that he does try very hard to correct himself when he messes up. he's communicative and apologetic, and he tries very hard to be that way.
and also this is maybe something that i just have a wider problem with when it comes to the way people interpret things in cartoons at times but splinter's actions in eps like lair games (especially in lair games) and flushed but never forgotten are meant to be like. jokes. its absurdist comedy that's meant to catch you off guard. there are more serious emotional beats in rise you can use but i think when youre adapting this world and characters into a more serious tone you have to keep that kind of thing in mind because some things are meant to be surprising and absurd for the sake of making you laugh. i think the best comparison i can think of is how in musical movies they're not actually singing (in most cases, sometimes the fact that they actually are is played for laughs it depends. but yk what i mean). the joke is that this is kind of a shitty thing he's doing but taking the actions themselves seriously in a vacuum in order to cast shame on a character has always been odd to me. that'd be like calling raph abusive for rolling up the window on mikey's neck in late fee. or calling the teetz murderers because they caused a robot mass suicide that one time. it just doesnt make any sense
#ask#i do actually think the oiled up splinter scene in lair games it was Weird and i do NOT like it#i have a problem with it overall. i cant tell if its moral or if its just a disgust thing its just a very ... Interesting choice#but i always look at people funny when they act like this actually makes splinter a bad parent#i think finding jokes meanspirited or offensive is understandable though tbf#you can not like a joke. you can even not like a character because of jokes like that#but i do think in shows with this kind of tone you have to understand the border#if a show were to go back and recontextualize moments like these to take them seriously i would not like it!#im vaguing two things saying this lol i dont like when media does that. slapstick comedy can stay as it is#like i do think there's a hint of truth in some stuff like this because its still the characters at the end of the day#but if they are not meaningfully challenged by the narrative in the episode#its probably because youre not meant to take it seriously

Shan's Favorite Dramas of 2024
The year is wrapping up and I have forced myself to narrow down to a list of 15 (I tried 10 but the choices were too hard!) of my favorite 2024 dramas across genres and countries of origin. This is not every drama I liked this year (that list would be incredibly long), but these are the ones that inspired the most brain rot and really stuck with me.
At 25:00 in Akasaka (Japan, Gaga)
The mood and tone of this drama was just perfect, and I loved the way it explored the blurred lines and confusion that can result when the real and fake aspects of a professional relationship get all mixed up. Hayama was a great character and I loved his arc, in particular.
Cherry Magic (Thailand, Viu)
I still can't believe how much I loved this adaptation. A fantastic example of taking a work from another culture and translating it to a new context while not only retaining the core narrative, but even enhancing it. This show gave us what the Japanese version didn't--the resolution to the physical intimacy arc at the core of the premise--and retained all the charm of the original while adding new humor. And delivered one of the best romances of the year while it was at it!
Don't Care for an Old Man's Underwear (Japan, fansub)
Oppan, my beloved. Easily the best family drama of the year, loaded with excellent messages while (mostly) avoiding feeling like an after-school special. Makoto's journey to update his thinking with Daichi's help, and the mutual friendship that developed between them, is one of my favorite relationships of the year. I loved every character's story; there is something for everyone to connect with in this show.
Fangs of Fortune (China, iQIYI)
This drama was just so much FUN. A gorgeous feast for the eyes, a wealth of fascinating characters and relationship dynamics, and a fast-moving plot that you don't need to try too hard to understand. It was a great binge and Li Lun was easily my favorite villain of the year.
Gyeongseong Creature (South Korea, Netflix)
A gorgeous period piece set during one of the darkest chapters of Korean history, this one took me by surprise (I am usually not a horror girlie). The writing for this show had surprising depth and I loved its themes around family and loyalty and survival under fascism.
Knock Knock Boys (Thailand, Gaga)
My boys! I loved this show about a group of four queer men living together in a shared house, getting into mischief and supporting each other through school and work and relationship struggles. The show is funny and breezy but also manages to tackle some serious issues with grace while delivering two strong romances and my favorite coming out narrative of the year.
Let Free the Curse of Taekwondo (South Korea, iQIYI)
Winner for best QL of the year, and a romance that will be sticking with me for a long time. Dohoe is one of the most honest and unflinching depictions of a an adult psyche shaped by childhood abuse that I have ever seen on my screen. It was healing to see him treated with such compassion and to see him and Juyoung find their way to a happy life together. An absolute must watch for all you angst with a happy ending fans.
Love for Love’s Sake (South Korea, iQIYI)
It's so hard to get a high concept premise like this right, but this drama did an amazing job with it. It's one of those shows where you can go back over everything that happened in retrospect and it all adds up, and I loved that the ending lent itself to so many different interpretations. One of the best watch experiences of the year.
Love in the Big City (South Korea, Viki)
Go Young, my beloved. This drama adaptation of the internationally successful novel exceeded my wildest expectations, and I am still a little stunned that we got the privilege of seeing it. It is, bar none, the most authentically queer show on this list, and a beautiful depiction of all the significant relationships in one young man's life. I will be rewatching it many times and keeping it close to my heart.
Love is Like a Poison (Japan, fansub)
A masterful blend of comedy, action, and romance, this drama about a lawyer with delusions of grandeur and the scam artist who decides to become his partner was a constant delight and gave us my favorite battle couple of the year.
Marahuyo Project (Philippines, YouTube)
I can't tell you the joy and relief I felt to get another high quality queer drama from the Philippines this year. And this one had such a great cast of characters, anchored by one of my favorite protagonists of the year in King. It's funny, it's romantic, it's touching, and as always for a JP Haboc production, it has an amazing soundtrack.
She Loves to Cook and She Loves to Eat (Japan, fansub)
My girls! I'm still amazed by how much this drama gave us in its second season by expanding the world of the show beyond our two main characters to include so many other women whose stories were just as fascinating. This is the season where Nomoto and Kasuga really came into themselves and started building the life they want to have together, and it was a real joy to watch.
Tender Light (China, YouKu)
The way this show had me in a chokehold while it was airing! Visually stunning, incredibly well-constructed, and featuring one of the best performances of the year from Zhang Xin Cheng, it's an exhilarating mystery and a very touching story of the unusual bond between a student and the older woman who fascinates and terrifies him.
The Midnight Romance in Hagwon (South Korea, Viki)
You know a drama is good when it has you deeply invested in a random topic you never thought you were interested in. In this case, that's the intense debate on pedagogical methods between the public schools and hagwons in Korea. Alongside delivering a great romance, this drama was passionate about teaching and it sucked me right in to the Korean literature lessons at the heart of the story.
Unknown (Taiwan)
No other drama inspired more brain rot in me this year than this story of a family rocked by changing feelings as the chosen siblings grow up. The loyalty and love and complex desire between Wei Qian and Wei Yuan is the heart of this story, and the drama did an incredible job of taking us along for the journey as things shifted and changed between them. I still think about them all the time.
Bonus: Favorite Classic Dramas Watched for the First Time in 2024
I am always catching up on an endless backlog of dramas alongside my live watches. Here are the best gems I finally watched this year.
Lost (South Korea, Viki)
I loved this deeply melancholy drama about two lost souls who connect unexpectedly. I finally pulled it up from my to be watched list because it shares director Hur Jin Ho with Love in the Big City (he did part 2 with Go Young's mom) and it sure feels like it! The characters are deep and complicated, the relationships are complex and carefully built, and it is hands down the best encapsulation of a failed marriage between two good people who truly loved each other that I have ever seen. It's heavy and not for everyone--mining the depths of human despair is kind of its thing--but if you like this sort of story it's world class.
Mouse (South Korea, Viki)
I was recently in the market for a good mystery thriller, so I finally watched this apparently very divisive 2021 drama--and if there's a divide I am firmly on the HELL YEAH side of the line. This drama had an interesting concept (that I will not describe bc holy shit spoilers, you should go in knowing nothing) that it unwound with remarkable patience and precision over 20 episodes. Its themes were strong and consistent, the lead characters were super compelling, the plotting and pacing and editing were unbelievably tight, the performances were incredible, and it made a lot of provocative points and ended well, feeling coherent and complete. It sustained my full interest and attention without any stumbles for ~25 incredible hours.
Mr. Sunshine (South Korea, Netflix)
Another one that's been on my watch list forever and finally got its moment when I was in the mood for a historical where ladies got to wield weapons alongside the men. And unsurprisingly, I loved it. Writer Kim Eun Sook is known for her big, glossy, epic dramas, and her style made a good pairing with a story about a rebel faction during the Japanese occupation of Korea. I really loved all the main characters in this show, and was moved by the complicated exploration of their loyalty (or lack thereof) to their homeland. This drama also has a very strong class analysis baked into its themes, which I very much appreciated. It was a traumatic watch, but in a way that felt right given the setting and the choices characters made.
The Miracle of Teddy Bear (Thailand, YouTube)
I watched this one on a mission and it was worth every moment. Nut is one of my favorite protagonists in any queer drama, and I thought the show made great use of its fantasy concept to explore some very real human experiences with depth and compassion. This show feels like an especially important counterpoint to the Thal BL bubble, and I recommend it highly for anyone who enjoys those dramas.
When I Fly Towards You (China, Netflix)
And we end on a light and sweet note, with my favorite coming of age romance that I watched all year. This drama was just lovely, and it will be a go-to rewatch for me for years to come. There’s something so comforting about a story where you start with the happy ending before jumping to the beginning, and just get to sit back and see how they get there. I loved all the characters in this and marveled at how it was never boring despite being decidedly low angst.

Timebomb fics rec
A lot of timebomb fics are hiding through a lot of CaitVi/JayVik tagged works on ao3 (while many are also CV orJV centric) so i made this rec post for everyone who dont want to spent 1 hour scrolling or missing some of them bc you're filtering other ships!! (sorry for the short summaries/ i didnt write my thoughts as thoughtfully as i would have liked because.yk.time and all. update chapter count/add of new fics every week)
AU/crossovers fics
Je t'aime (Je t'attends) 3 chapter, WIP.
Hunger games x Timebomb/Arcane, the way the system of the games from the og novels are mixed in the Arcane universe is really masterful, the writer dont lose too much time explaining it but you understand the dynamics of the 2 cities and the characters perfectly anyway.
Where would you be now ? by enaven 5/6 chapters, WIP.
family/modern AU, timebomb feels, Ekko and Jinx are Isha's parents, CaitVi are just silly aunts and i'll never stop recommending this fic
you're the best thing to ever happen to me (but also the worst thing to ever happen to me) by grey_toiletpaper ( @greytoiletpaper ) 3/8 chapters, WIP. Rated T.
Timebomb inspired by 10 things i hate about you.
We Moved Into a Real House (a Wild Field Behind it) by smokesatellite 3/10 chapters. WIP. Rated T.
Modern AU, Timebomb roommates/friends to lovers, Isha is a foster kid...you know where this is going .. (Ekko as a nurse is not something i expected but its surprisingly good. Also the in law feud between Jinx and Cait is very funny)
s1 fics
Silco is less of an asshole
The Heart of Zaun by 1ts_Br1tney_B1tch 8/ chapters. WIP.
or: Silco try to rally the Firelights to his cause (in this case, Zaun - he's much more involved in doing better for his city than in the show) but of course they're bound to have some..tension between them, since they hate him - and Shimmer. (it has the good parent Silco tag so i'd say that all in all, this Silco is a little less...Silco than in Arcane, but manage to keep some of the bite he has in canon...) i only read 2 chapters, and what i can say is that it does a good job with the general cast, the interactions between Silco/Ekko-Firelights are believable, i think the one thing that could have weird me out is the way Silco is said to be 'proud' of the Firelights in the summary (for me 'pride' is something he'd reserve for Jinx yk?? anyway i stop the rambling) . The Timebomb relationship has more or less the same push and pull as in the show, with Ekko thinking about the girl Jinx used to be/ Ekko being a link to the past before Jinx and all that entail...so yeah, i'm loving it!
Powder doesnt become Jinx
The Alpha Command by typewriter_in_galaxy 13 chapters. WIP. Rated E.
ABO/Reverse AU where Powder doesnt become Jinx and is raised by Viktor, Ekko is taken in by Silco. btw i dont read a lot of abo fic (im very nickpick) but this one does every characters justice, and actually dwelve in depth in the abo universe.. (everything by typewriter is good to be honest, but my favorite thing is how they write Powder, who even when she doesnt become Jinx, is still shaped by a very violent world/trauma and it shows through her mental health issues and very, very low self worth/need to prove herself. )
everything's better with a friend by typerwriter_in_galaxy 7chapters. Completed. Rated E.
Timebomb centric rewrite of Arcane, Jinx is Powder, she doesnt fall under Silco's hand (or in his arms precisely), Ekko is Ekko, and 1, i need to hug Powder, 2 she deserves the world and 3 the characterization of everyone, everyone is so brillantly written and the timebomb relationship (damn even the CaitVi one too) oh, the timebomb of it all... they feel so, so real and it hurts, Powder's insecurities, her mental illness, her guilt, her need to prove herself but in same time she doesnt feel herself worth of anything (or anyone) good... just.read it. read it, because i just did, after like 2 years of not doing that and. im like mad bc why didnt i??? but in same time so grateful to just discover it now, taking my sweet little time reading it; it rewinded my brain its amazing, (like this work in another fandom, the first time i read this rebelcaptain's fic A Love song by skitzofreak - did i just linked it for you to read even tho its a timebomb rec post??? yes. yes i did. thats how much i love, adore, worship this one guys - so everything's better made me think a lot of this TB fic, and also of RC (the abandonment issues, thinking that you have to leave first before everyone leave you, Jyn and Powder damn).
Shattered Web by Firewolf2132 1 chapter. WIP. Rated M.
you know how everyone make the comparaison between Ekko and Miles?? well, the author found a way for Ekko transform into a spiderman that feels right in the arcane verse (end of act1) and damn its so good. Ekko slowly morphing and gaining his powers while everyone still have some focus on them (mostly Powder), but it still manages to keep the suspense of the fate of other characters. fabulous. author note: [I have seen so many comparisons between Ekko and Miles and a lot of fanart. So it felt that I had to do this. I can't promise future chapters right now (busy), but I am eager to see if this inspires any stories with a similar premise.]
S2 fanfics
fics covering Timebomb moments between ep 8 Ekko saving her /they painted each other and ep9
Go Back For Her by A_Lily_In_The_Moonlight 3/3 chapters. Completed. Rated E.
Ekko's pov -i only read 1 chapter - we see his thought's process on his relationship with Powder AU/ Jinx, and how he came to the conclusion he must go back to her. the moment where he help Jinx with his Z-drive comes a little differently than in ep8 (well, the aftermath) aaand another fic where Jinx's grief over Isha's death shatters me, the pain and the self loathing/blaming from Jinx really devastating.
I dont believe in God, but i believe you're my savior by mquesterminds One shot. Rated T
[summary: every time Ekko has to rewind time to stop Jinx it cuts to a different moment from throughout their love story because I'm allergic to happiness the moments covering their shared past really make their present 10 times sadder.]
I'm sure we're taller in another dimension by hallwayheart One shot. Rated M. i have nothing to say because i'm still processing what i just read.ty.
Fires That Were Set by ilophilia ( @ilophilia on tumblr) 1 chapter. WIP.
the conversation after Ekko helped Jinx in episode 8. Loved the banter, the emotions (the grief is there and its important to feel it but damn i want to hug them so bad). They tell each other what happened when Ekko was gone, and you feel the distance/the closeness, near intimacy building again and its beautiful..
Hope is a winged beast by Grey_ Unicorn 4 chapters. WIP. Rated E.
prepare you tissues because i was myself not ready for chapter 3 and the emotional wreck of Jinx processing her grief. but here we are.
fics from AU Powder pov/exchange between Jinx and AU Powder
what we left behind by re_dragon_rising 3/3 chapters. Completed. Rated T.
Powder traverses to the og arcane universe 1 year after Ekko's visit. (the insight into her life after Ekko leaves is wholesome and also give the reader a glimpse of the Mylo/Claggor/Powder siblings dynamics + the impact of Vi's death on them. really great. a little sad too.)
The other Ekko by GrammarThyEnemy Oneshot. General audience.
Powder knows this Ekko is not her Ekko.
memento vivere by fuwaaa 1/2. WIP. General audience.
covering the AU episode, Powder knows something's up with Ekko.
See Ya On The Other Side by moth_dust 3/5 chapters, WIP. Rated T.
Powder also travel to the og universe.
these forgotten faces by whippindippin ( @whippindippin on tumblr too!) 6 chapters, WIP. Rated T.
Jinx and Powder body swap and its both the worst and best thing that could ever happen to either of them. great reading and their reaction on point.
Isha is alive
Astrantia by AelinCreativ ( @aelincreativ they're on tumblr too!) 5 chapters, WIP. Rated T.
canon divergence where Ekko saves Isha. a lot of angst. but also a lot of happiness. so we can cry while smiling along with them. great. ty author!!
Ankle-Biter by darkfire1220 8/9 chapters, WIP. Rated M.
Isha is Jinx's biological daughter, Silco is a not so bad (grand) father, and their mother/daughter bond is one a the greatest thing ever. (very slowburn timebomb). Also Vi. i love you Vi.
post s2
we made our peace with weariness (and let it be) by The_FlamingTiger 3/3 chapters. Completed. Rated M.
Ekko and Jinx reconnect in Bilgewater..(and Jinx goes to therapy. that too. its nice)
I don't believe in God (But I believe that you're my savior) by yeonatsu Oneshot, general audience.
Ekko is mourning.
this hunger for love won’t disappear by Amuria Oneshot, rated T.
Months after the battle for Piltover, Ekko begins to dream of Powder. He thinks it’s his grief playing tricks on him. She has different theory.
Francesca (Do You Think I'd Give Up?) by PoetProlific 2 chapters. WIP.
Ekko tries searching for Jinx...(with the help of Caitlyn, yep. and its well done, because I think Cait would help, for Vi. And i love how Ekko-Cait's dynamics might evolve because of this..)
So I met him there and told him I believe by ijustwanttoreadinpeace 3 chapters, WIP. Rated T.
Jinx begins a new life in Bilgewater but is forced to come back... (edit: be warned, this is now an orphan account so idk if there will be more chapters.)
all the 6 timebomb one shot by atabex (the other fics are not timebomb) they're all rated E and oh boy is it worth it. most of these oneshot are gut wrenching and do smut + characters so well... the most recent one is just Ekko and AU Powder ahem doing the boombayah on the rooftop, but yk, with bits of sad and tragedy here and there.
i'm a little ashamed i'm only adding it now but every TB os fics by @shroomystar is 🤌 nothing else to add because each one of them are good. so. (if you want the explicit one-shots it's here and if you prefer without, it's here )
#timebomb#YEAH#finally after 3000 years of saying i will do a fic rec post for one of my otp i fucking did it#ekko x jinx#jinx x ekko#ekkojinx#arcanes2

Our September & October recs ❤️
make lemonade by @smc-27 (book-verse)
@dot524: This author consistently posts stellar works but I often finish wanting more of that world. This one is nice and long — yay! I loved this meet-cute where Alex’s daughter Claudia has a lemonade stand and Henry is one of their favorite customers. This was a bit of an exploration of divorced dad (single dad) Alex. His mixed feelings about coparenting and starting a new relationship were nicely developed. Such a great warm fuzzy fic, with a nice bit of angst and character development mixed in to make things interesting. And I loved the kid character, Claudia!
falling in love (in the cruelest way) by @coffeecatsme (book-verse)
@suseagull04: This road trip AU is so fun, partly because of how soft our favorite boys are, but also just because of Alex's bright personality throughout the whole thing, and the faith and hope that's a critical part of the book!
we should get married by @smc-27 (book-verse)
@suseagull04: I had heard people talking about this green card marriage AU for months, and the hype was definitely warranted (as with all of this author's writing)! Little details from the book used in a new way, instant attraction, both of them being exactly what the other needs, exploration of other relationship dynamics within the book... this fic has so much depth in its 4 chapters, and it's fantastic!
Cleansing Downpour by @sprigsofviolets (book-verse)
@na-dineee: It often seems like things between June and Nora were always easy, like they were just meant to be. But what if it wasn't that simple? Feeling stuck in life, June is caught between writing a book she’s starting to hate, and navigating her growing feelings for her best friend. A beautifully written story of change, friendship and love, and figuring out who you really are.
runaway now and forever more by tonystarked (book-verse)
@na-dineee: Aged Alex and Henry, a US Senator and an English Prince, have been pining for each other for what feels like forever. Could tonight, at a glamorous charity event, finally be the night they open up to one another? This beautifully heart-wrenching and incredibly poetic fic has been stuck in my head ever since I read it!
The Candy Tax by @hgejfmw-hgejhsf (book-verse)
@suseagull04: This fic is absolutely adorable! It's the perfect nostalgia trip for anyone who went trick or treating, and it incorporates some of the pop culture references from the book in the best ways that just add to what make this fic so cute!
Heart enough by @hgejfmw-hgejhsf (book-verse)
@suseagull04: What if Henry's the one who has to travel for the apology tour and instead of celebrating New Year's, they have a Halloween party? This fic adds so many layers and soft moments to the original, but still includes the heart and references we all love!
Halloween at Kensington by @hgejfmw-hgejhsf (book-verse)
@suseagull04: This is the Arthur POV of Halloween when his kids are little I didn't know I needed until I read it- this is so adorable, and Henry and Phillip's characterization in it is perfect!
I was cold as a stone (but I found what I'm lookin' for) by @miharaikko (book-verse)
@na-dineee: Author Henry has retreated to a small, secluded cabin in the mountains, hoping it will spark some writing inspiration. That's where he meets Alex, the owner of the cabin... The mountain and campfire vibes are absolutely wonderful. It's such a fluffy and heartfelt one-shot – just as recommendable as the other fics in the Flufftober: A Red Umbrella Collection.
Red, White and Royal Switcheroo by @xthelastknownsurvivorx (book-verse)
@suseagull04: This body swap AU left me wondering how everything would have been different in the rest of the story- it's that good! It has the heart and content of the original, plus moments that are brand new- and watching the boys pretend to be each other is fantastic!
Oblivion by @milowren29 (book-verse)
@dot524: This story has been on my reading list for a while and wow, did it live up to expectations! Alex and Henry are kidnapped during their visit to the hospital, and they trauma-bond during their experience. But what will happen afterward? How will this change things between them? The action, angst, and longing in here is spot-on and the storytelling is so well-done.
Sounds of Someday by dazedandconfused (book/movie-verse)
@na-dineee: USA 1972, three weeks on a road trip on the 'road to nowhere' heading toward Texas: writer Henry and farm boy Alex. This fic is so layered and full of hurt and emotions. The ending completely knocked the wind out of me. An absolute masterpiece, please everyone, read it – it's phenomenally good in terms of language, storytelling, and capturing the spirit of the time !!
blizzards and broken boundaries by @gayhoediaz (book-verse)
@na-dineee: Age gap – I love this trope with Henry and Alex. Here, it’s a 20+ year difference: Alex is a student, Henry his professor. Alex makes the move, Henry is very amenable. The alternating POV is so cleverly done, the tags say PWP, but I definitely felt all the feelings. Absolutely delicious!
These violent delights by @lizzie-bennetdarcy (book-verse)
@suseagull04: Henry as a vampire hunter in this fic is such an intriguing concept and the backstory of it and the fic's conflict is so well done!
With magic soakin' my spine, can you read my mind? by @hgejfmw-hgejhsf (book-verse)
@suseagull04: Pining and magic and revelations abound in this fic that's written so well, it gave me chills. This fic is definitely a must-read if you want a canon divergent fic that has just a hint of magic!
to belong to a family (even beyond this world) by @read-and-write- (book-verse)
@suseagull04: The Mexican part of Alex's heritage absolutely shines through in this- and this is definitely a fic you want to read if you want Día de los Muertos fic and all the Arthur feels! I also love all the neurodiversity in this fic!
A Beautiful Reality by @tinyarmedtrex (book-verse)
@na-dineee: Priest!Henry is back. The second part of The Only Heaven I'll Be Sent To Is When I'm Alone With You is out!! And – surprise: He’s not a priest anymore. But it’s not that easy to shake off those deeply rooted beliefs and Catholic guilt. Luckily, Alex is so patient and totally in love.
The Brightest Star by @aforgottennymph (book-verse)
@dot524: Single dad Alex meets children’s book author Henry, and they connect immediately. The obstacle in this story is Alex’s sense of duty to his daughter, Bia. She’s quick and creative, and she’s brimming with opinions. I’m a bit picky about OC’s and kids in fics, but this one was so well done. It’s full of fun dialogue and well-realized feelings and angst. Definitely check it out!
A Love That Haunts the Land by @14carrotghoul (book-verse)
@suseagull04: Once again, this author has blended Mexican culture and RWRB in a way that's so authentic- plus there's magic! This is one you won't want to miss!
check out our past Monthly Faves here ❤️

your post is very well made and i agree wholeheartedly but i wanted to add one thing I've noticed in my time participating in fandoms that caused even people who liked caitvi to turn on it after season 2: people tend to like a specific ship dynamic and that is "character A is traumatized/mentally ill and character B fixes them" and a lot of people liked that dynamic for caitvi before s2 with vi being the traumatized one, and i guess people wanted to keep that dynamic in s2 and got mad when caitlyn had her own issues to deal with. it feels like people only allowed vi to have depth and feel emotions and caitlyn should have just been her cutesy therapist girlfriend and they didn't like that she got to be a fully developed character as well
You make a really good point. I didn't see nearly as much discourse around Caitlyn after season 1, and that's probably in part because to many of those people, she came off like the perfect female romantic interest - hot, supportive, and (again, in those people's eyes) existing mostly to serve Vi's own character.
It's funny when people accuse season 2 of treating Vi like an extension of Caitlyn/Caitlyn's girlfriend (which, lmao, way to ignore the entirety of the Vi and Jinx teaming up to save their father arc) when I would argue that such an accusation would fit Caitlyn's character and purpose more in season 1. Not saying that Caitlyn's character in season 1 can be reduced to just being Vi's love interest, not at all, but it was easier to fit her in that box.
Then comes season 2, and the Asian lesbian that nobody can deny is a lesbian any longer has *gasp* more agency! and *gasp* a morally grey arc! She also stops being physically thrown around like a ragdoll so much when she decides that she has fucking had it after her mom's memorial gets attacked, and I can't help but see the symbolism in that too.
Suddenly, it's harder to treat Caitlyn like the submissive Asian waifu I pretended she was in season 1! I don't like this anymore! She made Vi upset, how dare she! Caitlyn should still be crying in the rain like the good little submissive Asian femme I want her to be!
As always, nobody will admit that these factors are at play when the fandom vilifies Caitlyn so much while babying other characters guilty of their own war crimes, but I've been around enough to see what happens when a wlw character gets a morally grey arc - people always, always absolutely lose their shit. Add in the fact that Caitlyn refuses to be a dainty submissive Asian waifu and you get *gestures around* this.

(Aaa you don't have to (well... that's a given) respond to this at all, not expecting it, just wanted to share the same sentiment because your post reminded me of it) (Plus this is vv long it's a rant srry. If you do respond though (only an if) I recommend screenshotting so you can turn it into your own post and crop it so it doesn't take so much space)
Honestly, before 3.3 I was kind of sick of people saying "stop making everything about shipping/sexualities" because I assumed it was mainly just people getting salty that they're dealing with a inevitable fandom thing which was shipping/fandom and not staying in their own lanes (besides the obvious obnoxious exceptions).
And then when 3.3 leaks came out, Aglaea and Cipher turned out to have this really tragic and poignant history together, and me & other ppl were shipping it.... until it turned out Aglaea had know Cipher when the latter was a child & Aglaea was an adult + Aglaea raised her = they were a adopted mother daughter dynamic. I felt kind of embarrassed but after quickly moving on, giggling at myself, and examining it closer, I fell in love with their mother daughter relationship and how it was handled in 3.3. I can't even talk about it because then i'll start rambling lol. But then other ppl who assumed this would finally "be the proof" Hoyo was going back to their "yuri roots" (esp when Cerces and Mnestia are RIGHT THERE if you want that) and that Aglaea would finally be "confirmed lesbian" (not even gonna get into that) got angry and denied it to the point where they were looking at their interactions and lines such as "Your weave shop... I wish..... I could chance upon it again, just once.... Say something... Anything.... please" (Cipher was saying this to Aglaea in her final moments) as proof they were actually lovers and that no child would say that to their parent??? Especially when that's where Cipher AS A VISIBLE CHILD (there was a cutscene) met Aglaea who was A VISIBLE ADULT. And then they tried to excuse it by saying "oh there's a 1000 year time leap so it doesn't matter now" when they kept that dynamic since then and that's why Cipher calls back to that moment in the first place, she wants her mom. This wasn't one instance, the post had thousands of likes and many ppl share this sentiment (thankfully many called them out too).
Like.... have you people EVER had significant feelings for others that extended past romantic? Have you ever considered that to be possible? The concept has always been so foreign to me. Family, romantic, friendship, all have such importance that I could never try to scale them against each other. But these people seem like the first thing they do when they judge a relationship is to fit it into one of these categories depending on the weight.
I also find it so funny (in an ironic sense) that people use romance to simplify characters down to such stereotypical traits when instead it should add depth to them. Figuring out how their qualities work together, how they change as people, what parts of them stay the same, when other parts don't, and how they will stay in a relationship if they can at all. There's so much to uncover about characters if you put them in a situation, any tbh, so how this can turn into complete character flanderization is... kind of startling to me? (Speaking as a diehard ratiorine fan.... dude it's so bad)
And now that i've been looking, there are so many cases of shippers (wlm, wlw, mlm, doesn't matter, and my goodness all are completely obnoxious in their own circles and to each other) going into comment sections of nonshippers and spamming their own headcanons, or if someone calls them "besties" in their video (if they're unconfirmed) they'll be in the comments like "and they were roommates" and "history said they were best friends".
I was going to put a whole nother thing in about interpretation but this is already really long sooo. Yea. I just wanted to quickly share my thoughts because wow fandom can suck but i'm glad there's people like you who can call it out when it does
Oh, don't worry about the long rant, Anon, I don't mind reading it all.
Anywayss, to start, yes, I am aware of the annoyance I was causing to some people in this fandom, and for a while, even I doubted whether or not I wanted to be so "bothersome" instead of "staying in my own lane" as you said, which for me, is continue writing poems and musings. But after being bombarded with so many posts about Aventurine and Veritas being gae gae, and so many pornographic fan arts being labeled as masterpieces by the fandom, I decided to break my silence and thought "If these people can be so loud and proud promoting something so disgusting and wrong, then why can't I be just as loud and proud but promoting the truth instead?" — this was the only thing keeping me going, really. This, and the many people I've encountered agreeing with my posts and saying that I've expressed the very feelings they've wanted to express, but don't know how. And that makes me very happy. I may not be able to appeal to most, but I am content with whatever I can achieve.
For Cipher and Aglaea, I can't comment much since I have yet to go through 3.3, but I will say that, based on what you've given me, I'm not surprised. Shippers will say and do anything to everything just to "prove" their ship when there really isn't much proof at all. And while I understand the appeal of shipping (truly, I do, I've spent the majority of my childhood shipping Elsa and Jack Frost, Skye and Chase, and Sonic and Amy), sometimes all shippers do instead of just enjoying and having fun with the ship, as they claim to do, they instead shove their headcannons into everyone's throats and drag people into ship wars and make them choose, and proceed to attack them once that said person they've dragged into this mess disagree with what they want.
And also, that is the thing with some of these shippers, where they claim that Character A can't say this to Character B in a platonic manner when it obviously can? Cipher can say all those things to Aglaea as a child would say all those things to her mother, just as much as Phainon would say "It's a date, Mydeimos" to Mydei as an army veteran would say to his brother in arms after promising to meet each other again, alive, after the war. That is the beauty of HSR's writing; it's full of nuance and depth that a writer could only dream of making!
Character A can have significant feelings for Character B that aren't romantic. Character A can have significant feelings for Character B without necessarily wanting to marry and bed them. It's possible, all of it is possible because having these significant feelings for another person is natural and human! That's why we can have friends and lovers, and families at the same time! And they're all important. Very important.
For Cerces and Mnestia, I wouldn't necessarily call them "confirmed lesbians" or as Hoyo going back to their "yuri roots" mainly because I believe that Titans, much like Aeons, are not confined to the concrete or physical, but rather, they represent divine and abstract concepts, and the people following those concepts. And also because of the fact that, in Chinese culture, according to what I've read, they have a specialized term to refer to the divine beings they worship.
And well, I don't believe anyone in HSR is gay, nor should they only be known for their sexuality, and the reason why I think "queerness" apparently happens within stories is a mix of fan-service and self-projection. It's no secret that Hoyo knows their audience well and does things that satisfy their pre-existing fandom and appeal to potential customers simultaneously, and with the growing popularity of that community, I'm not surprised that Hoyo would join in and drop "hints" and "teases" in their own game as well. Personally, it really is just a marketing strategy to keep as many people as satisfied and attracted to their game as possible without triggering the censorship. And to be quite honest? I don't necessarily blame them for wanting to appeal to a bigger audience; the character trailers alone must've cost them a fortune to make, so of course they're going to find ways to earn back the money that they've spent.
I understand that my stance might be controversial and wouldn't be accepted well by many people, so I will leave it at that. However, if there are some of you who are interested in discussing more of this with me, please go to either my Inbox or message me personally and let us engage in a healthy debate — we are talking about differences in opinions, not personally attacking each other and I would like to keep it at that.
But anywayss, if you truly want to talk about interpretation, then don't hesitate to send me another ask in my inbox. This was a fun read, and I would love to hear more from you, all of you, actually.
I find enjoyment in hearing other people's thoughts and opinions and engaging in a healthy debate with them. But what truly makes me happy is, as I've said above is when I, apparently, express other people's thoughts in ways that they can't. An example would be what you said about me being able to call a fandom out when needed, Anon, and that is an honour for me, and I hope to create more of these analyses that will hopefully resonate and bring light to the unspoken thoughts of the people within my circle, in real life or online.

Just wanted to say that I completely agreed with your Sunrise take. It's almost as though you plucked it out of my brain and put it in words.
Its a shame that the Maysilee/Haymitch ship has been struck down so explicitly. I can't see the ship being popular now without fans claiming that we've 'missed the whole point'.
I also agreed with your take about Lenore: to me, she's far too similar to Lucy Gray for me to care about her in her own right and that's a shame.
I'm interested to see if you have any other thoughts since I enjoyed your first post a lot.
More thoughts on SOTR, Maysilee and Maysilee/ Haymitch.
I mean… I have issues with several aspects of Sunrise on the Reaping (SOTR), honestly. Like, the way the book handles its themes is just so on the nose. It lacks the subtlety Suzanne used to have. One of the biggest appeals of the original trilogy was that Katniss wasn’t a chosen one—she wasn’t special, she wasn’t trying to be a rebel, she was just surviving. And now suddenly we’re rewriting that entire foundation to make her destiny feel preordained? Add in all the fan service, which felt so Marvel-level with its cameos and callbacks, and yeah… I struggled with a lot of it.
The Maysilee stuff—and the Maysilee/Haymitch potential—is just one example in a list of things that didn’t work for me, but it’s a great one to highlight what went wrong.
First off, my gripe with Maysilee and Haymitch isn’t even just that they weren’t romantic. Sure, I do think a romantic storyline would’ve added more depth and been more compelling, but what really bugs me is the way people jump to that “not every relationship needs to be romantic!!” discourse like it’s some mic drop moment. And like—yeah, of course not every bond has to be romantic. The series already gives us beautiful platonic relationships, so what are you truly saying here? I always feel like that argument has a bit of a misogynistic edge, like romance automatically weakens a story or a character. That it’s less serious or important just because it’s “girly” or emotional. It’s the reverse of the people who think romance is the only thing that matters—it’s still minimizing, just from another angle.
Personally, I think a romantic connection between Maysilee and Haymitch could have added a lot to the story. Not because romance is inherently better, but because it would’ve allowed us to actually see the relationship develop. Imagine Haymitch having to confront and dismantle his class prejudices toward her. Imagine the layers that would add to his trauma, to his choices, to the person he becomes. That arc would’ve felt way more grounded than suddenly introducing Lenore Dove—a character who feels like a Lucy Gray copy-paste—and expecting us to accept her as the Great Love of Haymitch’s life.
And look, I’m a sucker for a good love story. I would have eaten it up so fast if this was a good one. But it simply wasn’t. There was no tension, no buildup, no spark. Just symbolism on top of symbolism, and a girl who was written to be “quirky” and “different” and important, but never felt real. She was too mythical, too much, too “main girl who haunts the narrative” without earning that weight. At least Lucy Gray had quirks and nuance. Lenore just felt like Suzanne ticking boxes: rebel, covey, singer, poet attached to her name, dead too soon. And I’m sorry, but having Haymitch still pining for his 16-year-old girlfriend decades later, when we barely get to see him reflect on his family or his fellow tributes? At least give space to his mother and brother, to the tributes he bonded with, to all the people he lost along the way.
And that’s what really bothers me. Suzanne always trusted her readers to come to their own conclusions. She showed us dynamics—Katniss and Peeta, Finnick and Katniss, Johanna and Peeta, even Katniss and Gale—and let us interpret. She never had to spell out who these people were to each other. But it seems like she didn’t trust that when it comes to Maysilee and Haymitch, and to Lenore and Haymitch as well. Suddenly we were told what to feel, how to perceive every relationship. And that just doesn’t land for me. It actually undermines the emotional weight because it feels like she didn’t trust the story to stand on its own.
And if the whole idea was to subvert expectations and say “Surprise! Everything you thought you knew about Haymitch’s Games is actually propaganda,” then… I don’t know. That twist didn’t work for me either. It didn’t enhance the themes, it just made me feel, again, like I wasn’t capable enough to reach conclusions on my own. For a book who speaks of propaganda, she sure tried to determine how we would interact with it without room for anything else.
Now, about Maysilee herself—she would’ve worked so much better as the ghost in Haymitch’s narrative. Platonic or romantic, an ambiguous bond between her and Haymitch had more potential than what we got. The Capitol downplaying her role would’ve tied beautifully with Haymitch’s later manipulation of the Katniss/Peeta narrative. She mirrors both of them in ways Lenore doesn’t: she’s a merchant girl like Peeta, she’s got Katniss’ fire, and her pin—her pin—becomes the ultimate symbol of rebellion. She painted the final poster. Not to mention the quiet tragedy of him having to see her twin sister around town for the rest of his life. That’s the kind of subtle, haunting storytelling that would’ve worked.
But instead, they stripped all that from her to give it to Lenore, and in the process, even Katniss’ story gets hurt. Because now, Katniss isn’t just a girl who stumbled into something bigger than herself—now she’s been chosen since the beginning. Which removes one of the most powerful things about her arc: the idea that regular people, caught in the right place at the right time, can change the world.
Lucy Gray worked as a ghost in Snow’s story. Maysilee should’ve been that for Haymitch. But unfortunately, all that depth, all that symbolism, was handed to a character who didn’t earn it and who honestly just didn’t deliver the emotional payoff Suzanne thought she would.

Top 10 Most Underrated BLs of the last 3 years
(mid year 2021 - end 2023)
This list will not include BLs that ended their run in 2024. I need some distance to know if something is actually underrated (We Are maybe?) or justifiably ignored.
1 I Cannot Reach You AKA Kimi ni wa Todokanai (Japan 2023 Netflix?)
This classic friends-to-lovers BL is everything Japan does best. Angsty. Emo. Aching. Driven by real thirst. Yamato is deeply in love with his childhood bestie, Kakeru, and has been for ages, increasingly unable to hide his ungainly damaging high school need. He wants Kakeru in every way possible and it oozes off of the screen. Kakeru is silly and a little simple, but not frenetic or overly camp about it. He is earnest, and genuinely wants to keep Yamato in his life, which means giving a romance (and gayness) a fair chance. We watch him realize his affection and what form it can take in a truly authentic way. This show was impossibly kind to both of its lead characters and I felt almost honored that I got to watch something so lovely and rare play out on my screen. Full review.
2 My Ride (Thai 2022 Gaga)
Thai BL grew up with this pulp (the first ever pulp to make my end of year top 10). It’s a truly lovely and special little show featuring the extremely rare pairing of sunshine/sunshine (AKA a cinnamon roll couple) plus mature explorations of relationships using one of the softest, sweetest, and most innocent friends to lovers vehicles. Kindly, overworked doctor meets broken-hearted motorcycle taxi rider in an “other side of the tracks” slow burn romance. The support cast is excellent, making for great friendship groups and family dynamics. With honest queer rep that adds to, but doesn’t impede, the story, and genuine conversation about the nature of class, wealth, and classism, not to mention communication, honesty, and respect for boundaries, you can’t go wrong with this show. In other news, I am a sucker for a single dimple. Full review.
3 Our Dining Table AKA Bokura no Shokutaku (Japan 2023 Gaga)
A lonely salaryman (+ talented cook) gets accidentally adopted by a college kid (and his little brother). I was always gonna love this show if they stuck to the original yaoi (which is very dear to my heart). And they did! Paralleling it almost exactly. It’s a quiet & cozy little parable of found family alleviating loneliness. Possibly too slow for some but definitely high up there for me as the best of what Japan can do with softness (like Restart After Come Back Home). It’s only flaw (if I dare say such a thing) is that it is not really “romantic.” Lovely & sweet but the romance beats are being used to build a family relationship, not just couple intimacy, but that's OK with me. This is a very safe show for anyone to watch.
4 About Youth (Taiwan 2022 Gaga)
A truly lovely little coming of age high school BL with a classic YA low drama but high angst and earnest depth. I didn’t even mind the singing, and that’s saying a lot. A weak seme/uke dynamic but tons of BL tropes (both rare in a high school setting but common for Taiwan) makes this one feel both sweet and colored by real world authenticity and grit. Full review.

5 Step By Step (Thai 2023 Gaga)
This was Thailand’s answer to The New Employee, and everything I loved about that show I loved about this one. This office romance between a stern boss and sweet subordinate felt more authentic to cubical work than previous Thai BLs of this ilk. That authenticity added tension to the narrative and its characters development (how novel). I also really enjoyed the charming side characters and the brothers' relationship to each other (although I could have done without that brother's side BL). Full review.
6 DNA Says Love You (Taiwan 2022 Gaga)
DNA deserves extra marks for an upbeat approach to a queer story arc that other shows have systemically mishandled with sadness (in the guise of realism). There is a twist, which I found predictable, but knowing what would happen didn't spoil this show. The leads are luminous and engaging, and it’s full of queer found family representation and an unexpected amount of domesticity, plus it’s Taiwan, so the kisses are great. The first few eps are rough going but have patience, it's worth it I promise! The second half is really special and life/love affirming - and the end is big-grin charming. Full review.
7 Unintentional Love Story (Korea 2023 iQIYI)
Of all the BLs on this list, this is probubly the MOST underrated. OMG the plot! Uke forced into a totally understandable betrayal, falling in love despite himself, put into a corner he can't get out of, the AGONY, the PAIN in those gorgeous eyes. Gah. Okay, so: A boy loses his job due to trumped-up corruption charges accidentally discovers his ex-boss's favorite artist, now a recluse. Evil manager offers him his job back, if he can convince the artist to rejoin society. Instead, they fall in love. I found the artist a bit stiff and reserved but Gongchan (maknae of B1A4) is a fucking GIFT - he carried this show (which I do not expect from the idol element). He was luminous with extraordinarily expressive eyes, just drown in the emoting abyss. The external conflict, social tension and pressure is complex and beautifully executed, plus Korea gave us legit side dishes (NOT a love triangle, hally-fucking-luya). Full review.

8 Dear Doctor I'm Coming for Your Soul (Thai 2022 iQIYI)
This is a romance between a doctor trying to save his patients and a reaper who is both his enemy and (eventual) lover (basically the genius premise of a gay Doom at Your Service). High concept looks good on you, Thailand. It’s lovely to see KarnNat back on screen together and they are still great, and Karn is just as painfully beautiful as ever. I enjoyed this one more than its ending deserved, and the best I can say is that it’s not strictly HEA but if you’re okay with Life: Love on the Line, you’ll be okay with this BL. It’s set up well, there’s no surprise unpleasantness like HIStory 3: The BL that shall not be named. Full review.
9 Destiny Seeker (Thai 2023 WeTV)
A darn near perfect pulp featuring 3 likable grumpy/sunshine pairings with uncomplicated iterations of enemies to lovers. At least one half of each does a decent amount of pining and there’s good chemistry, classic tropes, and excellent communication rep. It’s fun and full of linguistic jokes. Sublimely cheesy but a good rainy day offering with tons of rewatch potential. (Also WAR PEANUTS!) Full review.
10 Make a Wish (Thai 2023 grey)
A doctor who can see the dead strikes a bargain with a wish-granting irreverent tree angel - naturally they fall in love (from Sammon: Manner of Death & Triage). Stars Fluke Natouch opposite not Ohm, but who cares because Fluke has chemistry with everybody. Once again the Thai afterlife is incredibly bureaucratic but I enjoyed the premise and the unfolding of the story (it’s not predictable but still satisfying and with nice little twist). I like that the doctor is just gay AF - fag hag bestie and made of swagger. The cast is excellent but the comedic stylings are a bit overblown and tonally off. It has sad parts and did make me cry but is ultimately happy with a great sex scene, good smiley kisses, and all the agency.
10 others I rarely see anyone talk about:
Triage - Many would put this at the top of the list, but I don't find it very rewatchable and that weighs a lot in my assessments. Still it is GOOD and very underrated. BL does Groundhog Day featuring a doctor stuck in a time loop who must save a poor little rich boy from death by seducing the stuffing out of him, then PLOT TWIST, poor little rich boy must do the same for doctor! Unfortunately… stuffing keeps leaking. I thought the plot was engaging if a little redundant and occasionally exhausting. The pairs were all well done, low heat but with decent chemistry and the support characters were likable (or unlikeable, as required). My reason it's not in the top 10? If anything, the romance arc detracted and distracted from the main plot, but that doesn't stop this from being a genuinely good show it's just time loop is not a trope I personally enjoy. Review here.
See You After Quarantine? - This under appreciated gem is Taiwan’s answer to Gameboys and is just as charmg and adorable yet still as quintessentially Taiwanese as one might hope. It features a Japanese love interest and the cutest most confused disaster gay. Slow burn because the two have almost no actual screen time together and yet manage some truly amazing chemistry. Honestly how does Taiwan do it?
The Tasty Florida - I don't know, maybe it's Speed nostalgia, but I love this one, classic Korean BL with all those strengths and flaws... but The Prettiest.
You Make Me Dance - it's Korea but somehow they got this one, maybe by featuring mature characters and a real world crisis? Also they both ve hot.
Blueming - at the time it got a lot of attention but it seems to have faded into obscurity under the shod of The 8th Sense and Love of Love's Sack. This was a precurser to both and well worth a watch if you like it when Korea gets a little gritty.
Love Stage!! (Thai version) - I liked this IP alerady more than most. But this is the best of the 4 adaptations, and the first full Thai version of Japanese IP. It's both charming and notable in the industry. Hard to find and that's why it gets so little creddit but I think it's well worth the effort to track down.
Oh! Boarding House - I think most who watched this din't jive with it because it's an ensamble piece witha wicked love traingle. But I really enjoyed it. It felt like the move Kdrama BL that Korea has given us and I like me some Kdramas.
What Zabb Man! - one of the better BLs to come out of Star Hunter in the last few years. I like this pair a lot more than most, and the sides are wicked great. This is probably one of my favorite food themed BLs, actually.
2 Moons The Ambassador - possibly the lowest scoring BL to appear on this list but I just really like the leads. Nothing else is good, but they are kinda awkwardly fantastic. I also like how gay af the seme is.
Stay By My Side - This show was an interesting take on the "ghost boyfriend" trope. About a boy who is tormented by hearing the dead, except when he is around one other boy - desperation+proximity = love. Despite a strong initial premise it ended up mostly being enjoyable for sappy domesticity but nothing more. Still, I always give extra credit for the diabetes-inducing sugar content and rewatch capacity.
Requested by the lovely @l1xyz
FYI: I judge “underrated” on the strength of what I see people talk about (or more precisely not talk about) on social media, MDL reviews, and YouTube watch numbers (when available, as compared to comparable shows from the same country).
Because of this, statistically, there will always be quite a few BLs that are difficult to get hold of.
Here's my pulls of the Top Underrated BLs prior to 2021. Considering the amount of content generated over the last few years, the pool to draw from is likely about the same.
My Top 10 Most Underrated BLs prior to 2021

big fan of your idea for weird route queenkaard (sorry for bringing it up again), especially with queen being a major antagonist for the weird route like. i vibe with the idea that they bring out the worst in each other, like it's a relationship that challenges nothing about their worldviews and that's exactly why they're so drawn to it. queen's arc in chapter 2 just kinda gets. skipped in the weird route and i think rouxls would be the least person likely to incite the thought in her that she might genuinely be wrong at times, all he'd do is shower her in empty compliments to get her to stay with him. and like if she's keeping rouxls around out of a desperate attempt to Keep Things Normal he won't have to think critically about himself either, he'll just think of queen as a replaceable authority figure he submits to because he can get things out of her, not because he actually cares about her. like their characters could just very well stay stale in each other's company and it could. culminate horribly i'm sure. queen becomes even more convinced that she always knows what's best for everyone and can use extreme measures to get her way because she's right (i think the weird route in general could affect this) rouxls becomes even more convinced that sucking up to people he can betray any second if he needs to and being controlled by someone else is good actually and he doesn't need to change anything because queen literally tolerates him. ANYWAY SORRY FOR THE LONG ASK i was just thinking. if you have any thoughts about how they would interact on the weird route, how they would function as an antagonist and a supporting antagonist, what their relationship with the main characters would be like and just. how their dynamic would be in general i'd be really interested to hear that i enjoy these two and your takes a lot
NO NEED TO APOLOGIZE! i do tend to avoid long asks detailing theories when i feel i don’t have anything meaningful to add, but here. well, you’ll see from my response that i feel i do this time around. this is also a more in-depth analysis of my weird route thoughts, so even if you’re not into queenkaard, i’d invite you to take a look! fair warning, though, this gets LONG and is incredibly messy/may see some post-posting editing as i am concocting it in the middle of the night. THAT SAID; let's get into it!
with regard to the canon, i’ve discussed often how the main thrust of the weird route wrt noelle is forcing the game into a “noelle route”. this doesn’t necessarily mean every aspect of noelle is put into greater focus – we omit the introspection about dess and about noelle and kris’ relationship as children from the route almost entirely. in fact, much of the route is framed in such a way that the player seems almost expected to have taken the normal route prior to this – a lot of lines of dialogue builds off of information we get in the normal route, and the route itself is framed and presented like something someone would come across while replaying or backtracking.
rather, the “noelle route” reading is one that is more attuned to the term in the context of, say, a dating sim, or a life sim with multiple romanceable characters. context for several scenes is changed to turn them from choices into Romantic Choices – ie; choosing between kris and susie at the ferris wheel poster or choosing whether to imply kris and noelle are friends or something “else”. they’re the kind you’d see in a game like that.
as such, we’re forcing noelle in particular into the spotlight, and it seems we’re trying to isolate her from characters that she’s close with as a result. this brings up the other aspect of the weird route; the almost speedrun-like aspect of it. other characters (darkners in particular) become “enemies” to noelle, key cutscenes are removed, character development is truncated. berdly dies. queen’s role as major antagonist grinds to a screeching and abrupt halt. spamton, although he does manage to become the new route boss, has his sympathetic qualities put out of focus and dies as a result. susie manages to get a moment offscreen with noelle, in typical susie fashion, but she’s still our party member at the end of the day. and overall, a good amount of ch2 just… doesn’t happen, and so the bulk of the route becomes just kris and noelle in isolation. the only element that remains largely the same after we kick things off is the light world walkaround at the end – which makes sense if we’re rushing to get there and detaching ourselves even further from caring about the dark world and the events that occur there. the festival happens in the light world, after all, and i wouldn’t be surprised if taking noelle there becomes a critical juncture on the route. noelle will ride with us, after all.
but on that note; much to-do has been made over whether or not we embolden noelle on the weird route as we do on the normal route. however i feel the more prescient idea is that on the weird route, we take a look at noelle’s status as the damsel and decide to reinforce it. this is what i talk about often when i bring up don quixote in context of the weird route – i’m gonna do it a lot here, but to refresh; don quixote is a very old story wherein, to quote, a common man named don quixote believes himself to be the chivalric hero of the time, and tries to play at this for the "sake" of a woman named dulcinea. and this sort of don quixote idea comes up a lot (although i don’t think toby fox is intentionally invoking it), especially with noelle.
according to many of the other characters, noelle is a damsel, a “dulcinea”. she’s who berdly swears to protect, who catti tells you to keep safe, who mayor holiday keeps under strict rules and who even rudy talks a little down to. and oftentimes, kris is positioned as a protector figure specifically; either as a rival or as someone entrusted with the role by other characters. and this positions them perfectly to be the vector for our aforementioned reinforcement of the idea onto both them and noelle. we reinforce the idea of this world working in terms of don quixotes and dulcineas, of protectors and damsels, of obstacles to our protection of noelle and of noelle herself as our responsibility to protect and mold into the person we want her to be. (we even see this echoed in the new dialogue of the new route boss – i’m sure i don’t need to discuss how spamton talks about noelle there.) we take up the role of her “don quixote”.
queen’s dynamic with noelle is very interesting and complicated in relation to this. queen has this vision of herself as being in control, of noelle as a hapless damsel, but queen is also a darkner. the only control she can really get over noelle and the other lightners comes in the form of AGREE2ALL puzzles and “peon release forms” (i will not spamqueen in the middle of my queenkaard analysis but also, consider, spamqueen;), in being an obstacle for the lightners to overcome. and in the normal route, that’s just what happens. queen comes to understand more clearly the nature of her fate, complies to that, and is overcome. it’s a disquieting ending – but obviously, that’s the point. the unsettling nature of the prophecy and the darkners’ fates as objects are major conflicts there, and the start of the story is about setting them up as Problems That Exist. the more this goes on, the more we’ll start to see it questioned and revealed as such. it won’t last forever there.
that aside – on the weird route, queen never stops being a potential obstacle. she doesn’t get killed like berdly and spamton do; she’s just kind of unceremoniously shoved off to the side. ralsei talks her down at the end by telling her about the roaring, but that’s even more of a band-aid solution than the normal route nets. queen’s only remark on the matter is to lament that the only idea she had to help noelle went belly-up. so we’ve got two big interlocking ideas here already; queen is another obstacle to us, one who cares a lot about noelle, but one who we’ve written off for now. and we’ve zeroed in on this don quixote & dulcinea dynamic, turning the dial on it up to eleven.
so turning the camera into my own storytelling and to queen for a moment; storytelling-wise, what would she be up to now? overall, queen at the end of the weird route is not doing so hot. she’s quieter, seems a little out of it, and can’t quite muster her usual enthusiasm. this tracks with the tone of the route overall – a lot of the humor is tempered or outright omitted. i can’t imagine she can think of much else other than her concern for noelle and the loss of her… well, everything but swatch, really. and since she and rouxls never get to meet on-screen at all, the first time he’d ever really get to see her or talk to her would be in castle town, when she’s in that state, one-on-one. queen’ll actually get a chance to get a read on him this time. he won’t flee.
now of all the don quixotes in deltarune, rouxls kaard is one of the don quixote-est. combine a grandiose self-image and an object’s fate that’s shaped that self-image, and you get a social-climbing renfaire LARPer who’s chomping at the bit to swear himself as someone’s sword, even those he isn’t duty-bound to serve. and a beautiful villainess in distress? one perhaps in need of someone to swear himself to her? that’s kaardnip. that’s his “dulcinea”. (not to mention, it’s a chance to one-up swatch as her new butler supremeth.)
and of course, a villainess who starts her story seeking out a willing peon isn’t just going to turn one down. she’s lonely, too, incredibly lonely, and with king behind bars and the shopkeepers shopkeeping, i think she’s more than happy to spend a lot of time with this man who’ll throw himself at her feet while she throws herself into a new plan to help noelle.
so you have these two just marinating together in castle town, right? (stretches the time in castle town between ch2&3 out like taffy.) there’s a proximity there that would give way to a more – genuine isn’t quite the right word, but it isn’t the wrong one, either – relationship. they’re always together. they know one another in ways only people who spend all their time together know one another. i think you’re right that in the game itself she mostly tolerates him right now, but given queen’s taste includes the insufferably prissy (swatch), the slimy (spamton), and the egotistical (king), i could easily see rouxls slotting right in. the compliments he gives are empty, but they’re so reassuring to hear, to cling to. they bolster her; of course this is only a bump in the road, of course she’s still in control. in short; the two know one another quite closely, but there’s still that level of artifice there; like two people infatuated with the idea of being infatuated with one another, but who also know one another’s pet peeves and the side of their mouth they tend to chew in most often and the places they most like to be kissed.
it’s very strange, and probably very strange for others to see happen. i think they’re very attached at the hip in a manner that comes off a bit like they’re actors. i want rouxls to offer her hand kisses and reverence and just go all in on this performance, while she clings to it like a lifeline because there’s so little left otherwise. (it reminds her of swatch and so sometimes she goes and spends time with them, and they’re both so blunt with her on their feelings about rouxls and so ardently fond of her by comparison that she almost thinks about ditching rouxls for them, but – well, swatch isn’t out “in the field” like rouxls is, swatch is caught up in their new café work so often, and even back in her kingdom she had more than just swatch. so she doesn’t.)
as for out in the field – because rouxls will likely be in proximity to the party as they continue into the next dark worlds (even as he is turned to stone there and thusly irrelevant to them during the weird route,) he’ll likely notice what queen’s been talking about in noelle as it becomes more and more of a focus. he’ll likely tell her about it. and that brings us around to this unfinished arc between queen and noelle, where noelle is clearly miserable and queen will become a villain if it means she can make noelle smile again. it brings us around to queen as an obstacle to our goals that’s been put off but not overcome. and it keeps queen as a future obstacle – someone strong, who could be on the “winning side” at the end of the day. someone who rouxls’ll want to continue to stay allied with even as new rulers come and go as a result – and someone who’ll allow him a pathway to powerful late-game opponent status. after all, he’s likely to become a late-game opponent, too, in actual game canon. (he’s also just likely to based on – well, the sort of thematic juggernaut status i’ve laid out across this whole affair.) i’m a massive sucker for rouxls portrayals where he opposes the party in a more major way, because they’re often so campy and fun. that sort of absurd character concept is what makes me as fond of spamton as i am, and it’s what makes toby’s writing so good.
he’ll protect her. he’ll be a hero. he’ll keep her safe so she can save the day (and he can take all the credit). but he won’t, of course. i don’t think the weird route will have a happy ending for anyone. and i think he’d likely get himself killed doing this, leaving the floor open for queen to finally take center stage and pull out all the stops as a true “villain” to be reckoned with.

I really love the art in Skybound’s Transformers series. The style feels raw and imperfect in a way that adds so much personality to the characters. I appreciate that it’s not overly clean or focused on perfect lineart.
The way the Transformers transform—sometimes with their parts falling apart—feels alien, almost otherworldly. It's dynamic, full of life. The body language, especially with characters like Optimus Prime and Soundwave, is incredibly expressive, even though they wear masks. You can still feel their emotions through their posture and movement.
I know some people prefer the cleaner art style of IDW, but sometimes I feel like IDW’s focus is more on the fine details of the Transformers’ bodies than on their emotions. It’s like they get caught up in small details, which can leave the characters feeling distant or flat. They often look more like static objects than dynamic beings. The expressions on their faces are sometimes too simple, and the frequent design changes, without any real explanation, can be jarring.
But Skybound’s art? It’s full of energy. There’s so much more emphasis on body language and the emotions behind it. The way they draw the faces of the Transformers, especially in moments of tension or struggle, adds incredible depth. It reminds me of a picture showing the faces of young soldiers before and after war. You can see the emotions, the toll that battle has taken—it's like their history is written in their expressions.
I also really appreciate how Skybound captures the Transformers’ perspective of Earth. The way they show the awe and wonder the Transformers feel when they see the planet, its nature, is beautiful and unique.
And I love how the characters’ bodies aren’t pristine. The dents, the damage—they stay there, showing the weight of the war. It’s not just cosmetic; it feels real. I also like how they sometimes use their bodies so naturally, like when Megatron connects with Laserbeak to see. It’s all integrated into their world in such an authentic way.
Some people call the art "ugly," but I think that misses the point. War is ugly. The dents, the scars, the raw emotion etched into their faces—it’s all right there, laid bare. It’s not clean, stylized violence, it’s messy, visceral, and honest. And that’s what makes the dynamics of the story feel so alive.
