“Dominant Abby’ “Needy Abby” How about Dom Abby who goes fucking insane for you? An Abby who needs to Dom you so bad that you have her whimpering on her knees below you.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A/N: First fic where I don’t yap on with plot for 10 minutes first. Eat well my friends.
Warnings: Fingering (receiving) Oral, (receiving) (strap on) rough Abby, needy Abby, rough sex, brief mention of pain + breeding kinks, Minors DNI
Your eyes flicker from the page you were reading to the doorframe at the entrance of the room. You see Abby and smile brightly, feeling more comforted already by her presence.
“Hiya.” You say, putting the page down and returning to the ground from the bench you had been sitting on. Abby’s eyes darken, her eyes moving down your body real slow and not returning to meet your eyes. She doesn’t say anything and the silence is filled only by the click of the lock at the door.
“What are-“ You’re interrupted by Abby stalking up to you and kissing you deeply, moaning into it.  You pull away, shocked.
“Need you baby…” The words come out muffled as she practically speaks into your neck, sucking it and making you let out an unexpected gasp.
“Didn’t you tell Manny you’d meet him in- mmm” You moan into yet another, breath stealing kiss. Wide eyed, you watch as she gets on her knees in front of you.
“Need to eat you out….need to make you feel good please.” Face flushed, you nervously spread your legs and she smiles brightly.
“Can I?” Abby questions. You nod. “Yes.” There was no other way to describe Abby’s actions other than her diving head first into your cunt, tongue going 100 kms an hour over your clit. You gasp, gripping her hair and instinctively bucking your hips into her mouth.
She tastes you so eagerly, holding your thighs and digging her nails in a little. It was both pleasant and a little amusing when she got like this. At first Abby was highly against being rough in any way. “Your skins so soft…you’re so much smaller than me I-“ she used to babble, but now that she’s learnt how an eager grab or a few too many merciless thrusts turned you on more than anything, she doesn’t hold back hardly as much as she used to.
“Cl-close Abby.” You moan out, still a little confused at how fast this situation came about. She moans into you, as if urging you to finish all over her. Your body didn’t need much convincing though, as you could feel your stomach tighten in knots, your legs clamping around her and thighs shaking as you cum hard. She eases up her licking but doesn’t move, allowing you to ride out your high (and her face) as much as you needed.
She eases away from you, putting you in a comfortable position on the bench.
“That was…unexpected.” You say, still noticeably lightheaded. She tilts her head, eyes lingering across various parts of your body hungrily.
“Take the rest off.” She commands, her voice low. You comply, beginning to remove your top. Abby shakes her head.
“Not like that. Slow.” She says, walking over to where she had carelessly chucked her bag and pulling out a familiar…accessory. You had wondered where she even had the time to get that, or whether she had brought the strap with her all the way to and from patrol just to save her the walk to her dorm and back. You didn’t want to ask her about it though. She wasn’t in a talking mood, if the simple worded sentences were any indication.
You take off your bra and Abby tilts her head back, eyes shut tight as she tries to contain her excitement and arousal.
“Fuck.” Is all Abby manages once she finally opens her eyes again. “Gorgeous.”
You step towards her and her large hands are immediately all over you as she leverages your body effortlessly, holding you up against the wall by your thighs. You laugh at the action.
“Good thing you never skip arm day, huh Abigail?” You tease. She can’t help but smile back this time.
“‘Arm day’ huh?” She mocks. You shrug.
“I don’t know what it’s called…” You try to defend, but at this point she isn’t really listening as her fingers are moving through your folds.
“Mmm…y’feel wet enough to me my love…can I fuck you or y’need something else first?” She asks. You shake your head.
“Just put it in me…please…” You sigh out, and the relief on her face is precious. You can tell…or more…feel how bad Abby wanted this. And so, in the gentlest way known to man, Abby softly guides the strap into you, shoving more and more when she sees how good you take it.
“M’ not gonna move yet…I’ll let you adjust to the feeling of my cock inside you before I….” She hesitates, knowing the rest of the sentence should be ‘fuck you till your screaming.’ “You know.” She decides to say instead. You nod, moving your hips around it slightly for comfort. You nod again, allowing her to continue.
“Alright, you remember the safe word?”  You laugh at the question, but her face remains quite serious.
“Yes Abby, I remember the safe word from the past 100 times we’ve had sex this week-“
“I’m being serious.”
“As am I.” You say, and she just sighs. “I’m gonna be rough.” She explains. You smile reassuringly at her.
“Good.”
And with that, she starts slamming up into you, enjoying watching your body get pushed up the wall with each thrust. Still holding you quite well with one hand, Abby pins the other above your head, gripping it tightly.
“Mine.” She says, and you almost don’t hear it.
“Wh…at?” You question, your voice straining with all the movement. She sighs, embarrassed.
“Abb…mmpph…”
“Some. guy.” Abby starts to explain, still fucking you so perfectly.  “Talked about you in a way I won’t dignify with words. Wanted to fuck…mmph..” Abby’s still holding you tight. You smile at her. “M’ yours Abs…I’m all….fucking yours….ohfuck….”
Abby’s moving so hard and fast, pushing up into you in all the right fucking ways.
“You’re my fucking plaything. Can do anything I want to this pretty pussy whenever I want right?”
“Yes Abby.” You tell her, and she digs her nails into your thighs harder, making you moan.
“I fucking love you. Love fucking you too.” Abby continues to say. The sounds of your bodies connecting is so loud, you’re worried other people nearby can hear, but Abby hasn’t cared before and certainly won’t begin to care now.
“Gonna give you my kid…make sure you’re nice and fucking bred by the time I’m done with you.”And there it was. The breeding thing Abby liked to never fucking talk about. Always in denial she was into this kind of thing until she had you like this. Quite literally in a position where you were unable to ask questions.
“Take it…fucking take- mmm…” Abby moans, her voice sounding more high pitched and desperate as she got closer. You weren’t far off either, a few more praises or degradations would have sent you off the edge, you were certain of that.
“Such a good. fucking. girl.” And with that, your eyes shut tightly as you claw into the skin of Abby’s back under her shirt. She leans down to kiss you and you’re moaning into each other for what feels like eons.
She finally lets you down, removing the soaked strap.
“We’re um…probably gonna have to clean that.” Abby remarks, causing you both to laugh.
“You don’t think anyone heard us do you?” You ask her, and she puts her large palms on either side of your face.
“My pretty girl….probably.” She confesses, and you hit her playfully.
“You suck at comforting people you know that?”  She tilts her head, leaning into your ear.
“Oh you don’t really believe that, do you?”

in which ... a nightmare awakes you from your slumber, so you turn to your best friend for comfort. best friend!nick & black!fem!reader
warnings ; mentions of claustrophobia, crying, fluffy ending <3
"𝒚𝒐𝒖'𝒓𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒐𝒏𝒍𝒚 𝒇𝒓𝒊𝒆𝒏𝒅 𝒊 𝒏𝒆𝒆𝒅."

all you could do was run.
behind you was the looming shadow of the ugly, winged creature that's gaze bore into you with its five eyes, and its tentacles for hands which were poised to reach out for you.
unfortunately for you despite the disturbingly horrifying creature being completely hideous, for some reason the face of the creature and its eyes bore a familiar face — it was your ex.
the breakup was bad in hindsight, and now it was haunting your dreams. the never ending loop which you seemed to be running in was quickly coming to a close as you realized that you were nearing a cliff.
with one final look behind you, the familiar eyes of the monster that was your ex stared back, baring its enormous fangs as its crusty, large lips upturned at you, reaching out to grab you.
you jumped.
it wasn't the best decision — the deep blue depths of ocean below was suffocating as you fell in. your eyes couldn't close as you now felt as if you couldn't breathe. air became restricted in your lungs.
a loud gasp escaped your lips as you shot up in your bed, cold sweat beading your forehead. it was sure to mess up the baby hairs, which you felt sticking up as you looked on either side of you seeing you had been gripping the sheets.
you looked around yourself frantically, noticing your environment — the spare bedroom in your best friends' house. the sheets were bunched up all around you and the room was cold, the moonlight illuminating on the bed.
still startled, you ran a hand through your box braids, feeling that your scarf was now scattered under the pillows somewhere. tears welled up in your eyes, as you swung your legs off the side of the bed.
your legs felt wobbly as you remembered the horrifying creature in the nightmare, causing you to quickly grab your stuffed teddy bear, admiral snuggles. it was a gift from your best friend on your tenth birthday, and you've had it ever since, even at your adult age of twenty.
nick.
a small sigh of relief washed over you as you immediately made your way to his room. out of the three triplets you were best friends with, you and nick were the closest without a doubt. he was the first person you came out to when you realized you were pansexual, the first person to deal with your first heartbreak; nick was there for any and everything you went through, your number one best friend.
your socked feet padded against the tile floor as you crept upstairs towards nick's room. for a split second as you passed matt's room, you debated on seeing if he was still awake instead, but decided against it.
you finally made it to nick's room — you pushed the door open, seeing the sleeping blonde somewhat sprawled across his bed. you instantly feel bad for the fact that you're about to disturb his peaceful slumber, but matt would probably be too shy ( which you thought was sweet since you had a crush on him ) and chris has a tendency of clinging to your body too tightly when you're cuddling.
with a sigh you walk towards nick, tapping him lightly. he stirs for a second but doesn't wake. you tap his shoulder again, this time a little harder as the darkness that looms over you in the room starts to remind you of your dream once again.
a sniffle sounds from your mouth as your waterline wells with tears again — nick stirs once again before his eyes flutter open, and he looks around and rubs his eyes before they land on you. "y/n? what's wrong?"
"i had a really bad nightmare," you whisper, pulling your nail up to your mouth as your lip quivers, "i'm sorry for bothering you..."
"c'mere," nick tells you, sitting up in the bed, scooting over and patting the spot next to him.
you immediately crawl into the bed next to him — as soon as he wraps around you, you begin to sob into his sleeve whilst he runs a comforting hand around your shoulder.
"nick it was bad," you sniffle, wiping at your eyes, "i felt like i couldn't breathe..."
"sh, it's okay," nick says comfortingly, pressing a kiss to your forehead, "you don't have to tell me about the dream yet since you're still shaken up."
you sniffled and laid your head on his chest, your eyes darting around the room. "can i turn that lamp on, please?"
"definitely," nick says, getting up from the bed as you wriggle your feet under the covers. he turns on the lamp in the corner of the room, then he turns to you with a soft grin. "i'm gonna get you some water, okay? do you want anything to eat?"
"nick you don't have to," you sigh, twisting a braid in your hand as you give him a weary, "it's bad enough i woke you up."
"y/n i'm not going back to sleep any time soon," nick waves you off, giving you a stern expression, "goldfish?"
you nod meekly with a small smile, and nick nods to you and quickly exits the room — even though you didn't want to be alone right now, you felt yourself relax in the comfort of nick's warm room. his scent was enough to make you relax into the bed as you got comfortable under the covers.
nick came back into his room with three waters and a big packet of goldfish in his arms, to which you quickly got up to take the waters out of his hand and set them on the bedside table.
"i'm so glad y'all got the multicolored ones," you giggle softly, climbing back into bed next to nick as he holds a water out to you.
he takes the goldfish from you while you chug the water, setting it down on the table. you turn back to nick with a smile, and he smiles back and opens the package.
both of you begin digging into the goldfish as you talk about anything that comes to mind — a movie you both wanna see, you possibly telling matt about your crush on him, easiest bugs to kill, basically anything you guys can think about; it was one of the things you liked most about the two of you. when trying to stray away from a bad incident or something nick was so good at distracting you from what was going on around you.
talks like this usually ended in lots of laughter, and you wouldn't be surprised if matt came knocking on the door trying to hush the both of you up — but surprisingly? you both were quieter than how you usually were.
it wasn't until an hour later you felt your eyelids get heavy as slumber was about to come over you again. nick noticing you struggle to keep your eyes open, he pries the goldfish out of your hands and sets them on the table beside you.
"lay down on your back, y/n," nick instructs you, and you nod sleepily as you lay down, facing him.
"niiiiick," you sing sleepily, yawning into your hand.
"what's up boo?" nick asks you, pulling the covers up over both of you.
"thank youuuuu," you sing, coming out a whisper as your eyes fully close.
"i love you, girl," nick giggles, pressing a soft kiss to your forehead, "now go to sleep."
"i will..."
you bring your head closer to nick's chest, wrapping your arm around his torso as he brings his arm to rest over you. he watched you carefully as your chest heaved up and down in a rhythmic pattern — he smiles gently at you, hoping that you realized you were safe now with him and that your sleep would be peaceful from now on.
with one final kiss to your forehead, nick's eyes finally drift shut as he lets sleep consume him.

War…is over.
For now.
The media wouldn’t stop playing the coverage on repeat, leaving you unable to escape the scene that will haunt you for the rest of your life and forcing you to realize how vulnerable you are as a human being.
((spoilers below the cut))
Tumblr media
You knew the second that Bakugo popped out of the shell of UA’s fortress through a grainy livestream that something was wrong. The way he staggered out, covered in blood with a mangled arm…your heart sank. You had no clue what happened moments prior in that bubble, only the heroes inside knew the truth at the time. Watching Midoriya’s awestruck tears flow as they worked together to save All Might from All for One’s grasp didn’t fill you with hope like others around you - it filled you with fear, a deadly reminder of how dangerous hero society is and the sacrifices it entails. How your duty as a support technician, and as a best friend, wasn’t even close to enough to help him in such dire straits.
Your calls and texts to him went unanswered...as expected. He probably doesn't even have his phone on him. Rumors spread over the course of the week following Shigaraki and All for One’s demise about what happened on the field when the cameras weren’t rolling.
Did you hear about that Bakugo kid? How’d he even get up after all that? You mean from being clinically dead? Yeah, I heard Edgeshot saved his life on the fly. His heart exploded! No, he was punched and it ruptured. But he saved All Might’s life! That was so cool to see. Deku helped, too. He wouldn’t have made it in time without him. A lot of the other students went through a lot of shit…and they expect them to go back to school?
UA was 'kind' enough to give all students a two week break from classes with dorms and buildings open for access as needed. Two weeks to recover from everything that's happened...it was a joke.
You lost count of how many nights you woke up sobbing from nightmares about Bakugo’s death within the past week, ranging from surgery complications to being left to die on the battlefield alone, unable to reach him in time. Your therapist reiterated in your session that this is all a normal response, even when the events didn't directly happen to you and resembled a form of survivor's guilt. It only worsened your negative outlook on society as a whole, knowing full well that they’ve saved Japan today, but there will always be evil lurking and stewing in the shadows, waiting for the next greatest hero to bring to their knees.
Tumblr media
The hospital barred anyone outside of the immediate family to see patients, no matter how much you begged every front desk associate to let you see him. You didn’t want to resort to sounding desperate, but you gave in by the end of the week, stopping by Bakugo’s family home to talk with his parents. To your surprise, Mitsuki was home and answered the door. Not more than a second passed before she was scooping you up into a hug, her shaky hands clutching the back of your shirt as if you were her own daughter returning home for the first time in months.
“Hi sweetie,” she greets, her voice hushed and somber; an entire 180 from her normal demeanor. She lets you go, moving her hands to your shoulders as she invites you inside.
You spend some time catching up with her before asking the inevitable question lingering in the air. “How’s Katsuki? The hospital wouldn’t let me in to see him.”
Mitsuki’s eyes glisten, tears pooling in her eyes as she shakes her head and swallows harshly. “He’s a tough ass kid. Surgery went as good as it could’ve, but…” she trails off, wiping the lone tear rolling over her cheek. “Why don’t you come with me this afternoon to the hospital?”
You bite your lip, hands curling in on themselves as they rest on your knees. “But they told me—”
“Screw that!” She interrupts, standing to her feet. “You’re comin’ with me. You are family to us.”
Tumblr media
Your stomach cartwheels as the hospital comes into view from the backseat of the Bakugo family car, Masaru driving the three of you through the visitor’s parking lot. Mitsuki glances in the rear view mirror, catching the nervous twitch in your lips as you stared out the window.
“Dear, could you give us a minute?” she asks Masaru, motioning him to go on ahead. He nods in acknowledgment and leaves the car to head to the lobby.
“Do you wanna talk before going inside?”
How the hell did she know you were nervous? She’s known you for a good chunk of your live, it’s not too far fetched she’d be able to analyze your emotions like she does for her own son.
“I'm...” you say meekly, fidgeting with your jeans. “...trying to stay positive, but I’ve had so many nasty nightmares and I don’t know what to expect. I've only heard rumors at school about his condition.”
Mitsuki reaches to the backseat and gently takes one of your hands in hers. “Honey, it’s okay. You’re allowed to be scared. Shit, I’m terrified for him and all the other kids…this isn’t something everyday people experience, so it’s unfair to expect yourself to have standards on how to feel. He's alright, I can promise you that.”
You sigh, her words giving you a sense of comfort. “Thank you.”
“And if I can say one thing,” she adds, squeezing your hand to grab your attention. “That kid adores you, he’s just a stupid boy who doesn’t know how to say it.”
The laugh that bubbles up from your belly is genuine, a thin layer of anxiety dissolving at the thought of him getting embarrassed by his mom’s words. Nodding, you let go of her hand and open the car door, signaling you’re ready to go inside.
Tumblr media
“Katsuki! You can’t be up and roaming around!”
Mitsuki’s heels click against the marble flooring as she scampers to Bakugo’s side down the hallway, Masaru trailing behind her when she catches a glimpse of him hobbling into a room that isn’t his own. You stay back, peering from around the corner to avoid being seen if he happened to glance your way. A few minutes pass before you faintly hear Masaru say, "Come on, let's get you back to your room to rest," and the sounds of their footsteps retreating down the hall.
It's almost embarrassing how long it takes you to work up the courage to follow after them - what's the big deal? Your best friend is physically here, not some ghost or a walking corpse from your nightmares. You knew in your heart what it was that kept you frozen in place, a feeling you've long shut away, burying it within the depths of your heart to keep yourself sane.
Love.
And it scared the shit out of you, especially now.
Retreating back to the lobby, you mindlessly scan the vending machines as a distraction until a hand touches your back. You jump at the contact and turn to see Mitsuki and Masaru standing behind you.
"We're heading home for a few hours to make some dinner and come back with leftovers for Katsuki. I told the nurses you're with us, so keep this pass with you." She hands you a visitors badge and you tuck it in your uniform pocket. "I'll bring you some dinner, too, dear. Don't waste your money on snacks. Now go see him, he could use some time away from us."
You've got a chance to be alone with Bakugo to talk with him about...everything, and you're frozen in the goddamn lobby. It takes a bit of kicking yourself in the ass to get moving, but eventually, you begin to warily make your way back to the patient wing.
A vague memory of standing at UA’s entrance comes barreling to the front of your mind, the day that the hero courses all left to prepare for the war torn city streets with the pros. You’d stood to the side, passively blessing everyone with good luck and your best wishes as they prepared to depart. When Bakugo shuffles away from his parents, he spots you in the crowd and approaches you with a straight face. Just when you’re about to say something, he grabs you by the shoulders, spins you around and pushes you toward a set of hedges nearby. Not completely out of sight, but enough to hide from the majority of the congregation of friends and families.
“Kats?” You question, confused by him secluding the two of you from everyone else.
“Not another word,” Bakugo warns, cornering you in the darkness of the wall and bushes. He hesitates before reaching for one of your hands, warmth flooding from his palm into yours. His other hand scratches at the back of his neck nervously, eyes upturned to the sky as he speaks lowly.
“Wanted to say thanks for supporting my dream of bein’ a hero all these years. Don’t go worrying about me while I’m out there, alright?”
Before you could interject, his back was to you and marching over to join the others.
His words rang in your head every night, repeatedly taunting you about the feelings that rattled your ribs from how fast he made your heart beat.
You should have told him then.
Tumblr media
The walk up the stairs to his floor fills you with unexplainable jitters that you've never felt before - were you dreading the conversation? Are you scared he wouldn't reciprocate your feelings, despite Mitsuki's words from earlier? Or...afraid to see the damage in person?
You find his name on one of the patient plaques, taking a deep breath as your knuckles tap on the hollow door. His voice follows soon after, "Yeah, come in."
Your hand lingers on the door handle for a moment before you convince yourself to go inside.
‘Come on, it’s Katsuki. He's your best fucking friend. He knows everything about you and vice versa. Don’t be a damn coward and make it weird.’
The door slides on the track at a snails pace, revealing your face bit by bit to Bakugo as he stares in your direction. Imagine your surprise when his eyes widen upon seeing you, mouth open to say something, but nothing comes out. You shut the door and walk over to the right side of his hospital bed.
“Hey Katsu—”
The words refused to come out as you took in his current condition - a full arm cast, a brace around his waist, oxygen tubes through his nose and multiple bandages covering his pretty face. The window sill is lined with various vases of fresh flowers and 'Get Well Soon!' cards. It's overwhelming, the lump in your throat hardening at the sight, unable to stop the lightning bolts of anxiety zapping the color from your face. Bakugo snaps you out of it when his left hand reaches across the bed and grips your wrist, pulling you closer to him.
“Stop analyzin’ the damage and c’mere already.”
Before you could react, he’s using his free arm to wrap around your shoulders, tucking you against him as tightly as he could manage. “Was wonderin’ when you were gonna come visit me.”
The tears are swiftly building on your waterline, threatening to downpour all over your cheeks and stain his hospital gown. It takes every ounce of willpower not to say 'I didn't think I'd ever see you again.'
“They wouldn’t let me, I’ve been trying for a week. Your mom convinced them to let me in,” you explain as you lay one of your hands over his heart, thumbing over the fabric and feeling the freshly raised scar tissue underneath. “I’ve called and texted you, but figured they didn’t let you have your phone.”
“I don’t even know where it is,” he huffs. “Ma probably has it, or it’s dead on my desk in the dorms.”
Bakugo’s fingers run through your hair, playing with it absentmindedly in silence, sighing to himself. “I’ve got so much shit runnin’ through my head that I can’t think straight.”
“Yeah...I thought that would be the case.” You pull yourself away from his embrace, shifting to the opposite side of the bed before settling in to the chair by the window. "What's going on?"
He pouts, extending his left hand in your direction. There’s a hint of pink under his bandages that begins blooming down his neck when he mumbles, “Want you closer.”
You pick up the chair to scoot it forward as Bakugo groans aloud, shaking his head and patting the empty space next to him in the hospital bed.
“Kats, there isn’t enough room for both of us,” you laugh, unable to hide the drag of your lips curling into a smile at his flustered expression. He stares at you for a moment longer, asking 'please?' with those beautiful ruby eyes of his.
How can you not give in to him?
As gingerly as you can, you slide under the thin blanket on the bed and up against his left side, his arm raised to make room for your body to mold into his. You’re terrified to touch him, treating him like a porcelain statue and stiffening in his embrace.
"M'not gonna break if ya touch me," he comments, patting you on the back for assurance. Reluctantly, you lay your head against his chest and drape your arm over his midsection, settling in and getting as comfortable as you could in the confined space, careful to avoid all of the wires and tubes hooked up to him.
"I'm not used to you being touchy-feely for more than a minute at a time," you joke, smiling when you hear the click of his tongue against his teeth in response.
"My damn parents are the only ones I've been stuck with, gimme a goddamn break!"
A few minutes pass before you two carry on the conversation again, Bakugo clearing his throat awkwardly before letting go of the breath he was holding. "How...are ya holdin' up?"
Truthfully? You weren't, hoping that the light purple pockets forming under your eyes and lifeless hair were not dead giveaways of your mental status.
"I've...been better. What about you?" you reply, blatantly lying through your teeth. It wouldn't be fair to lay out all of the traumatic shit you've thought about over the last week when he's in the hospital recovering from the actual traumatic events.
"It's...lonely here," Bakugo mutters faintly, almost too low to hear. "An' I can't sleep. The nurses are nice, though, same with the therapist they sent in yesterday."
"They made you see a therapist straight out of surgery?"
"Right? S'what I said. Didn't talk much, though. Basically gave me the rundown of UA supplying all the students a therapist next month. Don't think it'll do much for me, not like I can undo all the shit that happened, but Ma talked me into goin' later on."
"Can't hurt, even if it's every once in awhile."
"...Yeah."
You trace some of the creases in his hospital gown idly, savoring his presence and the sound of his voice. Bakugo fidgets with the material of your shirt, wanting to avoid dumping all of his thoughts on your shoulders, but the weight is too much for him to hold onto any longer.
"Izuku's...quirkless again. I don't know how to feel, but I cried like a damn child when I overheard him talkin' with All Might about it. Gave me a perspective that I never thought about before all this shit went down."
"And what's that?"
"...I robbed him of his dream."
You wish, more than anything, that you could go into Bakugo's head and pluck out all the guilt he still harbors over his and Midoriya's childhood together. It's not like Midoriya held it against him anymore, and Bakugo knew that, but he couldn't shake those demons loose that reminded him of his past self.
"You didn't. He knew the costs of One for All and agreed to it, it's not your fault."
"I know, but I feel so fuckin' shitty for treating him like he's dirt for so long."
"It's not stupid to feel," you say, feeling his body tense and relax beneath you. "But Katsuki, you need to forgive yourself. You can't let this eat away at you forever, it's been over two years since you apologized."
His heart aches at your words, knowing you're right, but he couldn't forgive himself...not yet, anyways. Maybe tomorrow, or next week, even next month, just not right now.
"...thank you," is all Bakugo can say, biting the inside of his cheek to prevent himself from getting choked up about it for a second time. Silence falls upon the room, letting the two of you simply co-exist for a moment of peace. It had been a long fucking week, and being in the same room, let alone touching one another, was a luxury you didn't know if you'd ever have again.
"I'm out of commission for a bit, but that's not a concern to me right now. I know I can come back from this shit and stay on track to bein' number one. There's somethin' else that's been on my mind since..." he trails off, the hand on your back moving to your shoulder to tighten his hold on you. "...I fought Shigaraki in that damn fortress."
You rest your hand atop his on your shoulder. "You don't have to talk about it if it's stressful."
"No, I need'ta tell ya before I chicken out 'cause I didn't say it when I had the chance." He tucks a piece of hair behind your ear, twisting the strands in his finger as he bit his lip nervously. He's thankful you aren't currently looking at him, else wise all his cover would be blown before he spoke one word about it.
"The second he broke my arm, I didn't think about the pain, all I could think about was seein' you again. And then some otherworldly shit happened, the weirdest fuckin' out of body experience. I didn't believe in any of that junk until now."
Hearing him recollect the memory of his untimely death resurfaces all of the dormant fears lying in your mind from your nightmares. You screw your eyes shut to keep them away, to shield you a little longer from the pain they inflict upon you. Bakugo was right here, right now, with you. He's not an illusion or a figment of your imagination...he's here.
"...are you shaking?" He asks, hand cascading down your back to calm your nerves. You hadn't noticed that you were trembling, focused on doing your damndest to keep it together and let him spill his guts freely. "Do you want me to stop talkin' about it?"
It's muffled against his hospital gown, but you're able to squeak out a measly 'no.' He pats your head tenderly and shuts his eyes before continuing.
"I remember focusin' on rushing in and getting hit a second time, but this felt...different. There wasn't any pain, and when I came to, All Might's vestige ghost was there. He didn't say anything when I talked to him," Bakugo pauses, inhaling deeply to compose himself. "He led me back to UA and took me to the support wing's workshop. You were testing somethin' with Goggles, giggling away like an idiot with her."
The tears welling up in your eyes were inevitable at this point - was he insinuating that while he was skirting between life and death, he thought about you?
"And then I was outside, lying in the grass at our favorite spot down by the river. You'd dropped your fuckin' popsicle in the dirt, whining about how much you wanted it. I made fun of ya a bit before givin' you mine, but you insisted we share it instead. It was...nice. Everything felt warm and peaceful. When I actually woke up to Jeanist and the others, they kept sayin' I was revived and needed to go to the hospital. That's when I jumped in to help Deku and, well, y'know the rest."
Your body shivers, the hiccup you were desperately holding in coming to the surface in a muted sob. He silently lets a few tears fall, too, the bandages growing saturated with saltiness and stinging the open cuts on his face. His stomach was in knots, but shockingly, he welcomed the foreign feeling. To him, it only confirmed what he felt was true. He didn't know jack shit about love, but was more than confident that he could untangle the complexities of it with you.
"I was knockin' on death's door and you led me back home. Before I left, I was gonna tell ya how important you are to me...now more than ever."
You pray that Bakugo can't feel, or hear, how hard your heart was beating against your sternum, hammering away at his unexpected confession. The whirring of the medical machinery accompanied his words hanging in the air, swirling in tandem with the thoughts in your head.
Do it.
Say it.
Take the chance.
Cautiously, you attempt to sit up and haphazardly slip on the sheets, colliding foreheads with him while trying to catch yourself. Instead of scolding you, Bakugo bursts out laughing, a few stray tears falling from the corners of his eyes. "Y'coulda said something instead of head butting me, brat."
"Like you gave me a chance to say shit!" you scoff, poking him in the chest playfully. When your eyes meet, reflective hearts are bouncing between your gazes, faces lingering dangerously close to one another. "I've...been waiting to tell you something, too."
"Yeah? An' what's that?"
Your vision begins to blur, eyes falling shut as the gravity becomes too much to bare any longer. Your left hand glides up his chest, finding purchase on his collarbone while your lips rest plush against his. Electricity races through your veins and time stands still, all the clichés about love coming to the forefront of your mind and how true they proved to be in the moment. You barely notice when Bakugo's free hand threads through your hair and settles at the nape of your neck, melding the two of you into a deeper first, and definitely not last, kiss. When you part, it's not met with gasps for air, but with breathless sighs of bliss. You're pulling away only to gravitate back into his orbit, unable to resist his advance when he lurches forward to steal a second kiss. Your lips quiver against his as the words in your heart beg to be released, unable to cage the emotions thrashing around in your chest.
"You have no idea how many nightmares…I had about you not coming home…or that it was too late…to bring you back to life in the hospital,” you mutter between delicate kisses, finally having the strength to lean back and lock eyes with him. “I'd be standing at your goddamn grave like a widow whose husband returned from war in a casket, vacantly staring at the ground while the rain soaked through my clothes. The roses always had thorns that cut my hands open. It changed every single night, a new version of losing you before getting the chance to say...," you stop, attempting to swallow the pain long enough to confess, but your voice betrays you and cracks as you blurt out, "that I love you, Katsuki, and—"
He dreamily exclaims, "I love you, too," before the realization hits that he said it out loud and not in his head. It catches you both off guard and sends him into an adorable panic, the previous pink hue to his skin growing deeper by the second.
"S-shit," he stutters, squeezing his eyes shut and scrunching his nose to hide his lovesick expression. Your run your finger along his jawline, careful not to catch any of the bandaging, and stop at his chin to coax his attention back to you.
"I want to be the loudest person that you can hear cheering for you in a crowd when you save a little kid or capture a villain." Your hand cups the right side of his face while you continue to pour your bruised heart out. "To be your number one fan at signings and promo events that an agency is going to force your grumpy ass to do, the one who picks up your broken pieces when no one else is around. I want to give you everything because you deserve nothing less than that."
For the first time in his short life, Bakugo is speechless. What did he ever do to deserve your endearment? He wasn't one to shy away from expressing what was owed to him through blood, sweat and tears - like working hard on an assignment and deserving nothing short of a 100% passing grade - but this was unlike anything else. He truly didn't know why you were so captivated by his energy, even before these confessions came stumbling out into the open. What about him appealed to you in such a way to make you desire him so deeply?
"I—" he struggles to find the words to say, searching his brain incessantly for something to match your sweet sincerity. "I'd be happy sharin' popsicles with you by the river for the rest of my life if that's what it came down to. I don't need money or fame as a hero, bein' with you is more than enough for me."
In the past, something so sickly sweet would make Bakugo gag and be an immature jackass over the sentimentality, but now? He wouldn't admit that he enjoys the warmth blossoming in his chest and how it gives him stupid ass butterflies, especially when it comes to you. It struck at the most random times; when you'd laugh at his dumb jokes, toss him a smile in the hallway between classes, sit on the countertop while he cooked dinner for you two in the common room kitchen, fall asleep during your movie nights on his shoulder and drool on his shirt...the list kept growing exponentially until it kept him up at night, yearning to be by your side whenever you two were apart.
He should've known the moment you approached him on the playground over a decade ago, joining him on that rusty swing set out of nowhere and started talking his ear off about the dandelions by the riverbed.
Fuck, he was smitten as hell for you.
Your eyes well up with crocodile tears, lower lip wobbling and unable to stop the fat droplets coating your lashes, staining your strawberry cheeks and dripping down your neck.
"T-thank you," you choke out, wiping your palms over your face to erase the tears. Bakugo chuckles under his breath, reaching to cradle your cheek in his hand.
"So, do I still gotta ask you?" he jokes, smiling awkwardly as his eyes dart to the ceiling.
You don't know what he's referring to. "Ask me...what?"
"...Seriously?" Bakugo lets his hand fall from your face. The blank expression on your face confirms you are absolutely clueless to what he means.
"Fuck, fine." He rolls his eyes, shrugging his shoulders dramatically before shifting in the bed to re-position himself. He leisurely tilts his head forward and into your space, close enough for his breath to fan over your lips as he speaks. "I want ya to be mine."
"Didn't sound like a question to me," you tease, lovingly nuzzling your nose with his.
"Shut the fuck up...wanna hear ya say it."
Uh oh, gravity is kicking in again.
Your lips part with half-lidded eyes as you purr, "I'm already yours, Katsuki," before melting into him, sealing your promise with another kiss. He tries to control it, but the tiniest moan floods out of him when he experimentally swipes his tongue across your bottom lip, ferociously flaring your cheeks into a deep scarlet flush as you reciprocate. Instinctively, he moves his right arm to cradle you closer and is met with searing pain, jolting away from your lips unexpectedly.
"Fuck!" he shouts, out of breath and wincing at the pain burning into his shoulder. "Sorry, s'my fault for trying to move the damn thing. Wasn't thinkin' and forgot where we are."
The sparkle in his eyes dim as he cast his gaze downward to analyze the cast. His shoulders slump and he shakes his head, a frown tugging at the corners of his mouth. "I was never good at timin', but dammit, I wish I could hold ya properly."
"No, no, it's alright, we've got plenty of time when you can."
Bakugo exhales while shifting his weight to readjust, making room for you to lay on his chest and tucking you back under his good arm a second time.
"Promise me somethin'," he sighs into your hair. "No matter how awful shit gets in the future, don't lose faith in me or the others over some dumbass villains and let it sour your outlook on the world."
Wow, were your feelings that obvious?
"It's...not that." Guilt trickles down your spine, goosebumps prickling up your arms from pinpointing the negative associations you've built up in your head. "Of course I believe in you, Kats, but it scares the shit out of me that this all happened before any of you had the chance to be pros. I know you said you're not worried about it, but I am."
He knows you're right, you have every reason to be concerned over the state of the world and what that means for the future after everything that's happened this year.
"I have hope," he starts, letting his head fall back against the stack of pillows. "Doc told me my right arm is dead in the water 'cause of all the bone segments they had to join together in the surgery, but the possibility of it healin' isn't out of the question."
Your heart sinks in the pause of conversation. How could he have such a positive outlook after being legally dead?
"I refused a prosthetic and wanna try rehab first. M'not gonna let it ruin my approach to bein' a hero. The real challenge is my heart, but that's not—"
"Wait, what's wrong with your heart? I thought Edgeshot patched it up?" you interrupt, turning up at him with your brows scrunched together. It might be a silly question, all things considered, but Edgeshot was a masterful surgeon with a high success rate in his field...everything should be fine, right?
His heartbeat kicks up in tempo under your cheek - that can't be a good sign.
"He did...but it's not that simple, sweetheart. I've gotta take it easy for at least six weeks, maybe some meds to keep things stable. Shit sucks, considering I'm used to training daily, but it's not impossible to deal with. I can handle it. Plus, I got you an' your gadgets on my side."
"And you're telling me all this, but are worried about my feelings and Izuku being quirkless instead of yourself?"
Damn, you hit the nail on the head. Bakugo smirks, laughing to himself. "Heh, yeah. Guess so."
"Typical Katsuki, silently caring about everyone else before himself." You snuggle into him, a yawn falling out of you as you pull the blanket up to your shoulders. "Stop making me like you more and go back to grumpy, please."
"Only if ya promise to stick with me."
"Like you have to ask. I promise."
He places a kiss to the crown of your head. "Good."
Your eyes fall shut, the rhythm of Bakugo's heart beginning to lull you into a tranquil, and much needed, sleep. Before you pass out, you drowsily slur, "Everything's gonna be okay. You're the strongest person I know...love you, Kats."
Pearlescent tears pool at the corners of his eyes, the ones that escape rolling over the gauze on his face and soaking into the material once more. All the pain, worry, and relentless thoughts about failure temporarily fade away into nothingness, offering him peace and a sense of safety to drift off to dreamland. He closes his eyes, lips upturned into a smile as he whispers, "Thank you...love you too, princess. Sweet dreams."
Tumblr media
The door to Bakugo's room creaked open a half-hour later, Mitsuki and Masaru returning with dinner as promised. "Hey kid, we're—"
She stops herself, putting a finger to her lips and turning to Masaru, signaling for him to quietly shut the door. They can't help but jointly smile at the sight before them, the two of you are snoring away on the hospital bed together, cozied up under the sheets and out like a light.
"Reminds you of us, doesn't it? I had a feeling seeing her would help him relax," Masaru says, lightly stroking Mitsuki's back. "Why don't we come back in a bit to see if they're up?"
She nods and hands the containers of mabo tofu for him to take while she approaches the hospital bed. Her palm glides over Bakugo's cast, thumb tracing over his right wrist as her mind wandered back to memories of him as a little firecracker of a child; chasing butterflies in the backyard, playing super heroes with Izuku, and his toothy little grin anytime he was excited about something. Nineteen years flew by, and Mitsuki couldn't be prouder of her bombastic hero. Before turning to leave with Masaru, she affectionately pinches Bakugo's cheek, light enough not wake him from his slumber. She peers over at you, admiring how much you've grown, too.
'If anyone's gonna take care of my brat, it's you...thank you.'
The two of them leave you to enjoy each other's comfort.

The hurricane has passed and there's sunlight shining on a new future. The will be storms to come, but society has been given a chance to heal, all thanks to the next generation of pro heroes sacrificing their youth to challenge the status quo. Things won't be easy, that's for damn sure, but it's gonna take something stronger than the depths of hell to keep Katsuki Bakugo away from his dream - and you.

Quite often I come across the fanon idea that Mitsurugi (Edgeworth) already took the position of chief prosecutor during the 7-year gap. And everything would be fine, but this, unfortunately, provokes misunderstanding and people begin to blame Mitsurugi for the fact that he, being in the corresponding position, did not help Naruhodou (Wright) earlier, thereby exposing him as an insensitive bastard.
Let's figure this out then
I will use Japanese names because it's more convenient for me, so:
Mitsurugi = Edgeworth, Naruhodou = Wright
When did Mitsurugi take up the position of Head of the Prosecutor's Office (Chief Prosecutor)
First, let's make it clear that Mitsurugi's position after a 7-year gap is called 検事局長 (lit. Director of the Prosecutor's Office)
Tumblr media
検事局 (Kenji-kyoku) - Prosecutor's Office
長 (cho) - director, head
This position really exists, and if we turn to the Japanese Ministry of Justice (I will focus on the original version, because in English the name and differences in positions are more difficult to understand than in the rules of Arkham Horror), we will see this:
Tumblr media
Below is Google translation, but the general meaning is clear
Chief Prosecutor (Head of The Prosecutor’s Office)
• The Chief Prosecutor is the head of the High Public Prosecutors' Office, and one is assigned to each of the eight High Public Prosecutors' Offices nationwide. The Chief Prosecutor manages the affairs of the High Public Prosecutors' Office and commands and supervises the staff of the office, as well as the District Public Prosecutors' Offices and Ward Public Prosecutors' Offices within its jurisdiction.
___________________________________________
On December 20, 2027 (Turnabout for Tomorrow; jp. 未来への逆転), a conversation takes place between Mitsurugi and Naruhodou, in which Naruhodou says the following: “He's a chief prosecutor now. Pretty soon, it'll be a year, right?"
Tumblr media
This means Mitsurugi was not in this position until at least 2027
Naruhodo further says that Mitsurugi made a “special request” to him during the period when Naruhodou was still disbarred, i.e. until July 20, 2027 (Turnabout Reclaimend; jp. 逆転の帰還when Ryuuichi received his badge again), but after he was cleared of charges of fabricating evidence
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
He would only be able to get his license back when his name was cleared, which happened in a jury trial on October 9, 2026
Tumblr media
The first mention of Mitsurugi as the head of the prosecutor's office occurred on April 17, 2027 (The Monstrous Turnabout; jp. 逆転の百鬼夜行), when the convicted prosecutor Yugami (Blackwill) was assigned to the case (and we know that he was the one who was called the "special request")
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This means Mitsurugi was appointed to the position of head of the prosecutor’s office in the period from January (including New Year’s weekend) to the beginning of April 2027
Don't forget that Naruhodou appears in the defendant lobby in a new suit on April 18, 2027 (The Monstrous Turnabout; jp. 逆転の百鬼夜行), and says that he is thinking about returning his license
Tumblr media
After the Phantom case (Turnabout for Tomorrow; jp. 未来への逆転), a conversation takes place in the defendant lobby in which Naruhodou voices that he guessed that it was Mitsurugi who helped him get his license back (given Naruhodou's shaky reputation after being accused of fabricating evidence) and says that it went "little too smoothly." Mitsurugi only says that he "owes him" and therefore probably influenced the bar association (And we know that the Prosecutorial Investigation Committee shares deep ties with the Bar Association (as one judge from the AAI 2 said).
Tumblr media
In other words, Mitsurugi could not help Naruhodou return the license earlier, because the average district prosecutor did not have the authority to do so. As soon as he was in a position that allowed him to do this, and as soon as his friend was cleared of all charges, he immediately took advantage of this chance. Within 4 months, he convinced Naruhodou to take the bar exam again, took up the case of a convicted prosecutor, and asked Naruhodou to oversee his cases to find the root of the dark age of law and clear the charges against the young prosecutor.
___________________________________________
P.S
English and Japanese are not my first languages, so feel free to point out mistakes
I used a dictionary for Japanese words (exception - job description)
The text from the English adaptation is almost identical to the original version, so I used screenshots I took during the playthrough (even before the release of the trilogy in January of this year)

Later that morning, I sit back in my chair and stare blankly at my desk. I absent-mindedly swipe away a dark speck of dust that has landed on the otherwise clean white surface while Blinky gives me side-eyes in my periphery. The headphones he wears have become just as much a decoration as he is since the left side started crackling with static during certain songs, and I have to admit, they look better on him anyway.
Today, it feels like my whole head is full of static, like an old television that’s losing reception. I start to wonder if I angle my head the right way, maybe I can get a sharper image and clearer sound again. I tilt my head to the side in a half-hearted attempt with no luck and feel silly for it.
Mornings usually aren’t this difficult for me, but today I just can’t seem to fully wake up. My vision blurs and I pinch my eyes closed, pressing into them with my thumb and forefinger. The office gets gradually louder as people start their day, chatting with one another and typing on their keyboards. I look forward to being able to put in my earbuds and drown them out.
Tumblr media
Suddenly, a heavy hand lands on my back. I know without looking that it’s our manager, Kiyoshi. I lift my head up as he asks, “Are you feeling okay?”
“Yeah, I’m fine.” I tell him as I try to focus on his face rather than the stars floating in front of me, “Just tired. I didn’t sleep well last night.”
“Sorry to hear that. We’re training tomorrow, so try to get some rest tonight.”
“Will do.”
He gives me a nod and turns his attention to his own desk and computer screen.
I glance at the clock and sigh. How can a day feel this long at only 8:54 in the morning?
With a yawn, I grab my empty mug, grateful that I at least have time to fill it before our morning meeting.
Tumblr media
As I turn the corner toward the kitchenette, I notice two people already hovering around the coffee machine. I stop in my tracks and debate turning back. There’s nothing I want less than to wait awkwardly behind them while they finish up and leave. Especially if they try to make small talk. I don’t know their names, so it’ll be even worse if they know mine. No amount of coffee is worth it. I don’t care how tired I am.
I curse under my breath and walk back to my desk, set my mug down, and make my way to the conference room.
Tumblr media
I take my usual spot in the back, against the window, and wait as the rest of our team files in behind me. Lex catches my eye and skips over, “G’morning,” she greets me with a smile.
“Morning,” I say, attempting to give her a small smile in return, but inevitably giving up.
“You alright?”
“Just tired. I thought your friend was starting today. Or is that next week?”
“No, it’s today. He’s with Jeanie, getting his badge and all that. He’ll be here in a minute.”
I nod and look out the window, to the mountains in the distance. I like the view here. Our last office was surrounded by other buildings on all sides so you couldn’t see anything aside from the busy streets below. When we relocated here, to the edge of Uptown, it was a pleasant surprise to see a real view. As senior developer, I’m lucky enough to have a desk by the window. It almost makes the extended commute to this stuffy neighborhood worth it. Almost.
Tumblr media
I turn my attention forward as Kiyoshi starts the meeting, and immediately see a flash of teal out of the corner of my eye. My heart stops and my breath catches in my chest as though I just had the wind knocked out of me, a small piece of my dream suddenly clear in my mind, so real that I can still feel the weight of him lying limp in my arms. A wave of grief climbs up my throat and I nearly scream his name, but… but I don’t know his name. I try to remember it, unable to take my eyes off him as he walks into the room.
“Oh good, you made it,” Kiyoshi gestures toward him, “Everyone, this is Asher, our new environment artist. Evan will show you around after the meeting and get you up to speed.” Evan raises their hand and Asher nods to them.
Asher.
Ash.
The name echoes in my mind, again and again, like it’s being shouted in a vast and empty cave, bouncing off every wall and back again.  The room around me tilts sideways, and I think I might be sick.

A Birthday to Remember - Part Three - Toto Wolff x Reader
Originally written as an OC, inspired by an amazing request from @latte-luxe, I have rewritten this to a Reader POV, no descriptions and no use of your name. The only brief description is of a butt (you can probably guess why).
Word Count: 3.6k
Warnings: Caution may contain spice. 🌶️🌶️🌶️
Author’s Notes: Disclaimer, purely fiction, no-one is married in this alt-universe.
Waving goodbye to your three friends as their taxi pulled away from the round driveway at the front of the Fairmont hotel, you hoped you had made the right decision. Your birthday had been nothing short of spectacular, having spent the day at the beach, catching a nice tan before heading to the fanciest restaurant you’d ever been to, finishing the evening with a night on the tiles at the legendary club Jimmyz. You’d had fun with your friends and they’d pulled out all the stops for you, making sure everyone around knew it was your birthday with a second sparkler-topped birthday cake and enthusiastic singing.
Having reorganised your flight home, your weekend had now turned into a bona-fide mini-break. You would now stay an extra night with Toto, flying home on Monday evening and letting him show you around town. When you had texted him with your final decision, he’d been overjoyed and had suggested that he pick you up from your hotel shortly after your friends departed.
Making your way back inside the lobby to wait for Toto, you still couldn’t believe how this weekend had played out, butterflies aplenty as you thought about what could be in store.  You’d barely sat down, nervously fiddling with your phone, when the screen lit up with a message.
Outside x
It was Toto. Gathering your weekend bag alongside your large beach bag, you made your way out to the driveway, gasping as you clocked the car that Toto had come to pick you up in. It was a silver 300SL Gullwing, a car that you knew was worth a small fortune. He was leant jauntily on the bonnet, immediately leaping up to take your bag and greeting you with a peck on the cheek.
“Hello,” he said, “So how was last night?”
Blushing slightly, you replied, “So much fun! How are you?”
Having secured your weekend bag in the very small boot, Toto made his way back around to the passenger door of the car, opening the hinging door in a gentlemanly manner, “All the better now that you’re here.”
Making you blush even harder, your mind floated to your friends’ cautionary words. Perhaps he was a little too slick. Deciding to laugh off his comment, you replied, “Sure, sure. So where are you taking me?”
Toto’s eyes crinkled in a kind smile as he settled down beside you, starting the impressive car up. “Well, I thought since it’s a beautiful day we can go straight to the beach? I can show you the best views around here, then have some lunch, head back to mine, freshen up and watch the sunset?”
“That sounds lovely, thank you again for inviting me to stay a little longer,” you said, giving Toto’s hand that rested on the gearstick beside you a gentle squeeze.
“The pleasure is all mine,” he said, grinning as he spun the car around the Fairmont drive and up the famous hairpin bend into town.
——
The drive passed relatively quickly, with the two of you chatting away as you whizzed along the clifftop. When you dared to look down, you gulped at the sheer drop to the glittering blue waters below. The scenery was truly spectacular and you couldn’t help but be a little envious of the fact that Toto lived here.
“It is so beautiful, you’re lucky to live down here,” you said, sighing, knowing that your salary was not buying you a place on the Côte d’Azur any time soon.
“It’s not bad.” Toto said, with a grin, “I just wish I could enjoy it more.”
“I suppose you don’t get to be here that often right?” you asked, curious about his work-life balance.
“Never for more than a few days at a time.” said Toto, looking wistful, “Ok, so here we are, Plage des Pissarelles. I think you’re going to love it.”
As Toto pulled up at the side of the road, next to a nondescript garage, you couldn’t help but notice that you were still very much perched on top of a cliff, “I thought we were going to the beach?”
“We are.” said Toto, effortlessly parallel parking, “It’s a short walk but worth it.”
You raised her eyebrows, not expecting a hike, you’d worn leather slides, not the best footwear for climbing down a cliff.
Noticing you looking down at your feet, Toto smiled and reached across to squeeze your thigh reassuringly, “Don’t look so worried, there is a path.”
“If you’re sure,” you said, smiling apprehensively.
Hopping out of the car Toto once again rushed around to open your door and help you clamber out of the low-slung sportscar.
“Thank you,” you said, brushing away the creases from your linen shorts.
“You’re most welcome,” said Toto, suddenly producing a wicker basket from the boot that you had not noticed earlier.
“Are we having a picnic?” you asked eagerly.
“Wait and see,” said Toto, winking at you and threading his arm through yours as you made your way across the road and towards the coastal path.
——
True to his word, the walk was not too precarious, although you were thankful to have Toto’s arm around you at certain points. As you clambered down the last few stone steps and through the small gate, you were greeted with a gorgeous rocky cove, one that was entirely hidden from the clifftop. To add to the dreamy setting, there was not a single soul on the beach.
“Wow, this is gorgeous.” you exclaimed, “How did you find this place?”
Toto smiled, “I’m glad you like it, I discovered it one day when I was out sailing so I figured out where the parking was and now I come here as often as I can to escape.”
Beaming, you looked around, “I can see why!”
Clearly happy that you were impressed with his choice of location, Toto took your hand in his and led the way towards a small flat inlet, “Let’s settle here, the tide is not due in but if it does come in, we’re safe here.”
“I’ll take your word for it,” you said, still in awe of the beautiful surroundings. Toto made quick work of spreading out a beach blanket that he seemingly magically produced from nowhere and setting down the picnic basket to one side.
“So, what would you like to drink Madame?” he said with a goofy grin.
“What are my choices?” you asked with a smile, settling down on the blanket beside him.
“Rosé, white or sparkling water,” Toto said, presenting three small bottles as if he were an expert sommelier.
“Rosé would be perfect!” you replied, “I love that you have brought options. What else is in that basket?”
Toto smirked as he poured two small glasses of rosé before offering one to you, “That’s for me to know and you to find out.”
“So mysterious,” you said, giggling before holding your glass in front of you, “Cheers.”
“Cheers to the birthday girl,” said Toto, his warm chocolate eyes gazing into yours before taking a sip and setting his glass down beside him. He then leaned in and planted a soft kiss on your lips, his sudden affection taking you by surprise.
Pulling away and admiring the handsome man before you, you beamed, “It’s not my birthday any more though.”
“Nonsense,” said Toto, leaning in once more and gently kissing your neck, “It’s your birthday weekend until you’re on the plane home.”
Nuzzling into Toto’s kisses, you ruffled your hand through his unruly hair as he kissed his way up and down your neck, ghosting his lips behind your ear, almost making you moan in pleasure.
Sensing your excitement, Toto pulled away slightly, “Right, before we get carried away, would you like to eat?”
“There are options?” you asked, curious how he had put this picnic basket together at such short notice.
“Of course,” said Toto, producing what appeared to be two wrapped baguettes. “Emmental and ham or crudités. I wasn’t sure if you are vegetarian and I’m afraid the boulangerie didn’t have much choice this morning.”
“What do you mean? That’s so sweet. I’m happy with either. Honestly, Toto, this is so kind of you.” you said, touched by his attention to detail.
“I don’t mind, I like both.” he said, rummaging around further in the basket, “I also have some fruit and chips.”
“Lucky dip?” you said, honestly happy with either option.
“Deal,” Toto said, handing you one of the baguettes and setting down a small platter of fruit in between you.
“Ooh crudités.” you exclaimed as you unwrapped your sandwich, “I was secretly hoping for this one.”
“Good,” said Toto, planting another kiss on your cheek, “Please have some fruit too.”
——
Having sat contentedly for the last hour snacking, drinking rosé and occasionally snuggling in for a kiss, you felt like you were on cloud nine. No man had ever surprised you with a picnic, let alone a man you’d only known for two days. Whether or not he was the playboy your friends suggested he could be, you knew that whatever happened this would be a memorable birthday.
“Do you fancy a swim?” asked Toto, breaking his latest flurry of kisses.
“Sure,” you said, “Although I stupidly didn’t bring a towel.”
Smiling, Toto reached around into the picnic basket and produced a blue and white fouta, “Don’t worry, I came prepared.”
“What else do you have in that Mary Poppins bag?” you asked, laughing at Toto’s preparedness for everything.
“Just a tent, some loungers, an umbrella, the essentials,” he said, laughing as he stripped down to his swim shorts, allowing you to once again drink in his impressive body. Considering he was hitting fifty and had a high-stress job he was in incredible shape and you had to force yourself to stop staring like a complete pervert.
Following suit, you peeled off your sundress to reveal your white bikini, Toto not making any kind of effort to hide his gaze of admiration and whistling as you stuffed your dress into your bag.
You felt yourself blushing, not comfortable with his overt showering of compliments. You knew it was silly as he’d seen everything up close and personal not one night before, but you couldn’t help it.
“You’re shy?” Toto asked as he got up to join you in making your way towards the sea, careful not to tread on any sharp rocks. “You are beautiful, please don’t be shy.”
“That’s sweet,” you said, still flushed from the attention and not sure what to say.
Suddenly grabbing your hips and spinning you around to face him, Toto gazed down at you, “I mean it, the moment I saw you, I had to have you. You took my breath away.”
Now entirely speechless, you looked up at the tall Austrian in front of you “You’re quite some man Toto.”
Gazing down affectionately, Toto once more planted his lips on yours, his hand lightly caressing your hip, sliding under the tie of your bikini bottoms. However, the moment didn’t last long, with Toto abruptly breaking away. You were confused for a second until he exclaimed with a grin, “Race you to the sea,” and bounded away.
“Hey, that’s not fair, you had a head start,” you said, trying not to hurt your feet on the pebbly beach. “Your feet must be like Teflon Toto.”
“You get used to it,” he said, turning back and making his way over. “But since it’s your birthday weekend, I’ll help you.”
At that, he scooped you up into his arms, carrying you towards the ocean. Once again rendered speechless, you clung onto his broad shoulders for dear life.
Wading into the water, Toto then gently dipped down, allowing you to dip yourself into the cool blue water. “Thank you, my knight in shining armour,” you said, enjoying the water as it lapped around at waist height, the height difference between you truly laughable as Toto was standing mid-thigh in the sea beside you.
Noticing this, Toto waded out a little further to the drop-off, flipped onto his back, floating for a moment before dunking himself under the water and coming back up, James Bond style, pushing his thick, dark hair out of his eyes.
Now that you were feeling more confident, it was your turn to whistle in admiration.
“You like what you see?” said Toto with a smirk, “Come and swim!”
“Don’t mind if I do,” you replied, making your way into the deeper water to join the handsome Austrian.
——
Having enjoyed a long and lazy afternoon swim, you had since returned to the beach where they’d continued to snuggle, with you drinking wine and Toto switching to sparkling water as he was the designated driver for the day.
“I could stay here forever,” you mused, content as the warm afternoon sun shone down on the two of you.
“Me too.” sighed Toto, pulling you closer into his chest, “What do you want to do tonight? I was thinking we could go back to mine and freshen up and then go out for dinner?”
“That sounds wonderful,” you said, happy that you had pushed your flight.
“I’m glad. Thank you for staying.” said Toto, absentmindedly stroking your hip, “This has been one of the best weekends I’ve had in a long while.”
“You and me both,” you said with a sigh.
——
Having stayed at the beach a little longer to dry out after your swim, you then made your way back towards Monaco. The drive back had been as beautiful as ever and you had quickly come to appreciate the unique melting pot of old-world charm and modern architecture that made the tiny country so special. Maybe in another life, you could even see yourself living there.
Apprehensive as you set foot in Toto’s fancy apartment building, you were suddenly nervous once again. If you’d felt like you didn’t belong at your hotel, this was next level. Everything was pristine white and exuded luxury. A million miles away from your small apartment back home.
Making your way into a glossy-looking elevator, Toto smiled at you, “I can’t believe you’re here with me.”
“Believe me, me neither,” you muttered, still feeling as if you were in some kind of dream. Perhaps you’d had one too many cocktails and hit your head on the dancefloor at Jimmyz, or were just in a really deep jetlagged sleep?
“So, this is home sweet home,” said Toto as the elevator doors opened to reveal an extremely luxurious-looking foyer, with an expansive marble floor, expensive-looking art and a console table topped with numerous photos of Toto with various members of F1 royalty.
“Nice.” you said, “So are you going to give me a tour or what?”
——
Toto had proceeded to show you around his surprisingly tasteful apartment. It was modern and clean, mostly blue and white with floor-to-ceiling windows along one side that offered a spectacular view of the sea. Continuing the foyer decor, impressive art and sculptures were scattered throughout, alongside various pieces of motorsport memorabilia.
Having shown you to the luxurious marble bathroom that adjoined his bedroom, Toto had allowed you a moment of privacy to take a shower, ever the gentleman ignoring your protests for him to go first and your joking invitation for him to join you.
As you allowed the waterfall shower to rain down on your head, you still couldn’t quite believe that this was real life. Even Toto’s bathroom oozed money, the shower wrapped in elegant grey and white marble that matched the sizeable bathtub and countertops. For a moment you allowed yourself to daydream about what it would be like to shower here every day.
Shaking the intrusive thoughts away and shutting the shower off, you stepped out onto the cool marble. Having successfully washed the beach out of your hair, you twirled it into a turban and then wrapped both yourself and your hair in the cosy white towels that Toto had left out, padding out into the bedroom where you found Toto lounging on the bed, reading something intently on an iPad.
Clearing your throat to get his attention, you timidly approached him, “The shower is free.”
His eyes crinkling, Toto looked you up and down, “Thank you, although I knew I should have joined you. Just when I think you can’t look any more beautiful”
Blushing, you were surprised by his comments. You were fresh out of the shower, hair wrapped in a turban, make-up free and wearing nothing but a towel.
Sensing your shyness, Toto got up from the bed and took your hands in his, “Seriously, you drive me crazy.” Bending down to kiss you gently, he added, “I will try and be quick and if you need a hair dryer I put one on the dresser.”
Once again pleasantly surprised by his thoughtfulness, you thanked him before standing on tippy toes to return the kiss, pushing into his hips and planting your hands on his firm chest.
Growling, Toto deepened the kiss, his large hands dropping to squeeze your hips as he guided you back towards the bed, only breaking the kiss to place you gently down on your back on the bed before continuing to explore your lips with his.
As if a switch had been turned on in his brain, Toto suddenly broke the contact, “Hang on, you don’t want me getting the beach all over you again. You just got clean, I should shower.”
Slightly affronted, you gripped your hands together around the back of his neck, pulling him back down, “Don’t be stupid, maybe we can take a shower together, save the water?”
“I like that suggestion,” said Toto, once again, scooping you up in his strong arms and carrying you to the bathroom.
——
By the time dinner time had rolled around, the sun was setting and you and Toto had explored every inch of each other’s bodies. You’d showered together, dried off together and then finally collapsed once again in Toto’s pristine white bedsheets.
“Hungry?” asked Toto as he spooned you in shared bliss.
“Hmmm,” was all you could manage, content with laying in bed for the rest of the evening, cuddling up to Toto and gazing through the wall of glass windows, watching the last of the evening sun dip below the cool blue line of the ocean.
“Fucked out?” asked Toto, somewhat crudely.
“You could say that,” you replied, lazily drawing circles on Toto’s muscular arm.
“We can order in if you want? Watch a movie and be lazy?” Toto said, caressing your lower stomach from behind.
“That sounds like perfection.” you said, turning your head to kiss Toto once more, “What did you have in mind?”
“There is a good Italian place across the road, they deliver quickly.” suggested Toto, “Or if not there is a Greek restaurant also.”
“Italian sounds good,” you said, always a fan of the popular cuisine.
“Great,” replied Toto, “I will find the menu.”
——
As you opened your eyes, the morning sunlight was just starting to stream in through the gaps between the curtains. Toto snoring contently beside you, his arm never having left your waist as you’d cuddled into the early hours.
With mixed emotions, you reflected on your birthday weekend. A beautiful place, fun with your friends and this handsome man, you could not have wished for a better birthday.
Sensing you were awake, Toto stirred beside you, sleepily propping himself up onto his elbow, “Morning beautiful.”
“Morning handsome,” you said, turning around to kiss him, feeling his hardness pressing into your back as he came to.
“I don’t want you to leave today,” said Toto, pouting slightly, pushing his hips back and forth into yours.
“I don’t want to go. But alas, I have to go back to work,” you said sadly.
“Fuck work, stay in my bed forever,” he said, reaching over to the dresser to roll on a condom before settling back behind you, pulling your hips close and tucking himself between your legs, nudging at your entrance.
“I wish,” you said, gasping as Toto rubbed himself up and down, gathering your growing wetness before pushing in.
“Fuck.” was all you could say as you suddenly felt full, Toto gently bottoming out before pulling out and pushing back in lazily.
“That feels so good,” he exclaimed, continuing at the agonisingly slow pace, drawing in and out.
“Tell me about it,” you said picking up the pace eagerly with your hips.
“Slow down, we have all morning,” said Toto, gripping your hips, forcing you to keep to his tantalizing rhythm.
“I guess.” you said impatiently, “You are such a tease Toto.”
“I know,” he said, before suddenly withdrawing fully, reaching around and flipping you onto your back. Hovering above, he settled back between your legs and pushed back in, forcing you to moan at the new angle.
“Oof yes, do that,” you said, wrapping your legs around Toto’s lower back and pushing up to match his shallow thrusts.
Quick to respond, Toto kept up the pace, finding a rhythm that had you both blissfully moaning, not a care in the world, as you worked your way towards completion.
Reaching your shared high, Toto collapsed slightly, rolling off carefully before pulling you close into his chest and kissing your forehead. “Thank you.” he gasped breathily.
“Thank you,” you giggled, craning your neck to look back up at Toto “I will never forget this birthday weekend.”
I’m glad to hear that.” said Toto, “When can I see you again?”
Slightly taken aback by his openness you stuttered, “Oh, you want to see me again?”
Frowning, Toto looked down at you, his dark eyes impenetrable, “ I’m not sure how many more times I need to say it. Yes. I want to see you again.”
“Well, then, we can make it happen,” you said grinning, cuddling up into Toto’s broad chest, content in knowing that it wouldn’t be goodbye when he dropped you off at Nice airport later that day.

Alien Friendship AU: Mina Ashido, a fan of everything alien and sci-fi, meets a real life alien, Midoriya Izuku.
Midoriya was sent to earth as part of an anthropology mission. He was supposed to learn about earth culture and human behavior and report back. However, not long after arriving on earth, he lost contact with the mothership, leaving him stranded on earth with only his own dropship and no way of finding his way home.
The reason that Midoriya was chosen for this mission is because of his shapeshifting powers, as they let him seamlessly integrate with the local culture of wherever he's sent. The advent of Quirks makes this even easier for him.
Ashido tried to call herself Alien Queen, she is absolutely a colossal sci-fi fan. What she didn't expect was to see some lights in the distance at Takoba Beach and investigate to find a real spaceship. Or the startled alien who can't be much older than her.
Strictly speaking Midoriya is supposed to wipe her memories of him and go into hiding--he was on Takoba to board his dropship and take it deep below the ocean where people wouldn't see it--but the mission is already so FUBAR that when he's discovered, Midoriya just kinda breaks down crying.
Midoriya and Ashido's combined Friend On Sight powers means that following procedure was pretty much doomed to failure from the beginning anyway. It's her idea to enroll at UA, which Midoriya realizes could actually get him connections who might be able to help him find the mothership as well as potentially paving the way for first contact through his popularity.
+1. Nedzu is aware of aliens, but is not an alien himself. Nor does he immediately know what Midoriya is.
+2. All For One is an alien who was exiled and figured that if he couldn't become a demon emperor in space, he could conquer this backwater planet. His brother kind of objected to that, so he's currently 0 for 2 on that. And yes, that does mean all OFA users are technically part alien.
+3. Midoriya's 'real' appearance is reptilian, with three eyes, a curled tail, very long rabbit-like ears, and unguligrade legs ending in points.

summary: Loki turned his head for one minute...
pairing: daddy!loki x little!femreader
warnings: water/drowning/ age regression/
A/N: this is so fluff I cant- it seemed people actually liked my uh other post. if anyone has any story recommendations or critique your more than welcome. ok luv you byeee.
~
The cavern was located deep in the forest of Asgard.
It was hidden by plentiful wild flowers and ivy leaves dangling precariously from the broad trees, which were sheltering the soil below.
you would hop and skip along any exposed branch, clamber upon any tree stumps that were cut down from harsh storms.
It took Loki and you some time to make it to his secret destination. You would slow behind, ogling any bug that wriggled, or leaf that fluttered from the clear sky.
Striding along the path, your daddy couldn't help chuckling to turn and find you plucking stray twigs from the earth, and pebbles that shone brightly. Once Loki had turned away for a second, then found you enjoying the company of a grass snake slithering around your ankle, you insisted on keeping the creature but your daddy was adamant.
The two of you were now settled underneath a willow tree viewing the pond ahead, tall grass surrounded the water.
The sunset would ripple off the water's edge, creating small sparkles. “Here daddy!” You exclaimed, shuffling on your muddy knees to your daddy. Taking the crumpled daisy from your pocket you stretched your arms, shoving the gift in his lap.
He observed the limp white petals “is this for me darling?” he asked kindly, a slight pink dust dusted your cheeks and you couldn't help hide your blush in his chest.
You nodded quietly against him, the scent of tea and old books filling your nose, your ear was pressed snuggly against his beating heart and heard the faint chuckles of loki.
After some time you grew restless, now bored of the mother birds singing, hidden away in the depths of green.
You crawl off your daddy and begin waddling around admiring the pond in front of you, Loki materialises a worn book one that he would read to aid your sleep and begins reading.
“Don’t go too far darling” he cooed firmly knowing you have a habit of wandering off. As you walked or rather tumbled down the grassy bank, you giggled to yourself pushing back the stray hairs in your face.
As the grass brushed against your ankles, you parted the tall green shoots at the lake to get a closer view.
Your attention was directed to the sound of loud squeaks or rather quacks? As the water rippled a mother duck emerged from the lake, you babbled excitedly watching more Fluffy yellow chicks following closely behind.
Her babies followed behind happily, their little legs kicking in the water “Duckies!! You cried shuffling to the waters edge teetering nearer to the deep depth below.
“Hewo mrs ducky” you introduced yourself, stretching out your hand to try and entice the momma duck over.
Call it luck or intuition but Loki's eyes lifted from the book, now scanning the area. The hairs on the back of his neck raised and he rose from his resting spot “y/n” he called out to the trees firmly, but you didn't respond.
Continuing to make new friends You peered over the edge, reaching out to pet the head of the smallest chick.
But before you got the chance, the earth below crumbled under you and your balance shifted forward.
You squealed and tumbled into the water “Da-!” Your cry was cut off as you were swept under water. Struggling to keep a float, hands immediately pulled you from your watery grave.
You immediately spluttered using your new breath to cry out fearfully, clawing against your float who was loki hugging you tightly.
“What on earth happened?!” a string of blabbering left his mouth as he checked for any small injuries you caught.
You were inconsolable sobbing into your daddy's neck, your arms wrapped around his neck.
“M s-sorry!” you managed to stutter, shaking in fear and cold as your dress too was soaking. After a few heavy breaths, loki looked down from holding you to see your face stained with tears, and your body quivering quietly “m sorry, jus see duckies-” you kept repeating sadly. “There now, it's ok. I'm sorry sweetheart daddy was just incredibly worried” he spoke calmly.
He lifted your chin to see you staring shamefully, your head somewhat lowered. “Are you okay darling?” he frowned, seeing your lower lip quivering. “Mhm” you agreed, burrowing your head against him, your hands playing with the strands of his hair.
“I think we should say bye to your duck friends and take a warm bath hmm?” he cooed, wiping away your wet hair invading your face annoyingly, you responded with a sniffle and buried your face into his neck sadly.
Loki rocked you back and forth keeping you warm by wrapping his cape around your cold form. By now your pretty gown had lots of mud and rips, as loki bounced you softly turning around to head home you waved sadly to your duck friends.
“Bye bye mrs ducky-” you muttered with a small pout. “Good girl darling, we will see them soon i promise” he spoke gently, pressing a kiss to your forehead, he couldn't help grinning peeling off a piece of seaweed stuck to the crown of your head.
Your lip curved slightly when listening to the fading quacks of the mama duck and her babies. Loki's strides created a calming rhythm making your eyes heavier and heavier with each step.
You awake confused and startled for a moment but your daddies touch reassured you, you rubbed your eyes trying to get rid of any sleep.
“Don't do that darling, you'll hurt your little eyes”  he chatisted taking your hand and rubbing it with his fore thumb gently. You yawn and settle into the warm bath, a concoction of scents and salts settling your body and mind and your daddy right beside you.
“I-i sowwy for ruining da day daddy” you interrupted the silence, barely wanting to see his disappointing gaze. “Oh darling” his brows furrowed deeply and his eyes were glistening like sapphires in the light.
“you didn't ruin anything” he soothed, washing you down.
You were swept from your bath into safe arms, you yawned and felt soft sheets underneath you. With a click of Loki's fingers your hair was magically dry, “I have da best daddy” you claimed as he tucked you in tightly, bundling you up in the sheets
“Of course you do” Loki claimed smugly pointing his nose into the air, you giggled at your daddy who was feeling rather proud.
Loki wandered beside your shared bed and kissed your forehead “goodnight darling I love you” he said watching you cuddle your stuffies tightly “Ni ni daddy wub you” you spoke sleepily in between yawns, Before you drifted to dream land.
You awoke in the morn to the sound of squeaks and shuffles, you yawn and turn on your side and find a box. The box shuffled around, you lifted the lid and squealed.
“ISSA DUCK!” you cried dancing around the room, ready to show your daddy your new friend. Loki chuckled downstairs listening to your squeals, you thanked him with tons of hugs with your new friend that quacked constantly.

I GOTCHU POOKIE.
SMUT BELOW THE CUT!
Tumblr media
You weren't hooking up tonight.
Nope.
Not tonight.
Just because you broke up with your asshole of an ex-boyfriend last week after finding him in bed with someone else, did not mean you were going to let loose at this party tonight.
Bullshit.
It was a crowded house and you had been stuck by your friend's side all night as she chatted up with some drummer of some popular band.
You weren't bothered to pay attention because as soon as you stepped foot in the packed house, you immediately wanted to return home.
Your eyes scanned the crowd, immediately meeting with dark eyes already watching you; fire burning behind them.
You choked on your drink when you realized how breathtaking he was.
Those dark eyes winked from over the cup he brought to his plump lips and in that moment, you knew the mantra you'd been repeating in your head all night was about to be thrown out of the goddamn window.
A head full of hair pulled tight in a bun motioned to the staircase; a silent demand.
One you quickly obliged to.
After telling your friend you would be right back, you slowly followed behind the stranger up the stairs, giving yourself some space.
Darkness shrouded the hallway, the man disappearing with it and you felt your nerves begin to wreck you.
"What am I doing?" You muttered to yourself before being pulled into an even darker room.
Those eyes from downstairs broke through the moonlight cast into the bedroom.
"Yes or no?" His rich voice asked.
You blinked for a moment before you understood his question.
"Yes," you breathed moments before hungry lips attacked yours.
His hands ravaged your body, molding over every one of your curves and finding the back of your neck, bringing you in deeper for a kiss.
"Fuck" you moaned when you felt the hardness of his cock brush against your clit.
A soft tap on your thigh. "Turn around, baby."
Happy to oblige, you turned around, pressing your chest against the door.
Your stomach twisted and turned like you were on a roller coaster when you realized what he called you.
Baby.
Calloused fingers slipped in your pants, gathering your slickness to your clit before strumming it like a guitar.
"So wet," he groaned. "Fuck, the moment you walked in the door tonight I knew I'd have you."
"Cocky, huh?" You teased while pressing your ass against him.
"Not at all. I just know what I want," he yanked your pants down, it pooling at your ankles.
Once you stepped out of your panties, he pocketed them and before you could argue, he had you bent over with your hands spread against the door.
He bent low, eye level with your dripping cunt and when you glanced over your shoulder at him, you saw him lick his lips.
"I don't even know your name," you breathed, on edge.
Eyes flicked up to you. "Nicholas."
All at once, his mouth was on your pussy, lapping up your sweet arousal.
The sharpness of his teeth scraped along your clit as he buried his face deeper into the sweet spot between your legs.
“Don’t stop,” you panted, not wanting this euphoria to stop.
Nicholas ate you out from behind with both hands on your hips, continuing to keep you in place against the door while he knelt on the floor.
When his lips wrapped around your clit to suck hard on the sensitive bud, you screamed out his name.
"Let everyone know downstairs who's making you fall apart like this," he demanded with a swift smack to your ass.
You were so close, something he seemed to have picked up pretty quickly so he slipped a finger inside of you.
It was a gentle caress of your inner walls with slow strokes. Sheer ecstasy was slowly building at the base of your spine, warming up all of your senses until it felt like you could combust at any moment.
Nicholas flicked his tongue over your clit before it joined in with his finger in fucking you.
The musky scent of your wetness filled the room as your body shook out your orgasm.
He hummed in approval, loving the way you tasted before slowly pulling away.
Breathless, you were unable to move so Nicholas slowly pulled up your pants for you and tapped your back.
"Look at me, baby."
Slowly rising to full height, you spun around to see those beautiful dark eyes looking at the wetness on his fingers.
"Lick." was all he demanded before shoving them into your mouth.
You lapped up your own juices, cleaning his long fingers for him proudly.
You glanced down to the hardness between his legs, pressing tightly against his jeans and your stomach ignited again.
Nicholas noticed because he wrapped an arm around you to lead you out of the room.
"But what about-?"
"Later," he assured you with a wink. "I have a few more people to mingle with. You're not leaving my side though."
You smiled. "I have nowhere else to be."
Truly you didn't.
Some would say you're crazy for sticking around after a random hookup but something was different with Nicholas.
You felt so at ease with him.
You could trust him.
And it also helped that your heart fluttered every time he smiled.
"What are the chances I'll get my panties back?" You asked as you walked back down the stairs with him.
He smirked. "Not a chance, baby. Like you, they're mine now."

A Heart Fiercely Protected
Summary: Sanemi, the Wind Hashira, battles jealousy as his protective instincts flare when Y/N, tends to Tanjiro and his friends. After a tense moment, Y/N reassures Sanemi of her love for him.
Warnings: None.
Note: I do plan on writing for someone that isn't Sanemi.
Tumblr media
The sun had just begun to dip below the horizon, casting a warm, golden hue over the Butterfly Mansion. The peaceful sounds of the garden mixed with the faint chatter from inside the mansion, creating a serene atmosphere. You moved gracefully through the corridors, your gentle smile lighting up the faces of those you passed. Your caring nature had earned you the admiration and affection of everyone around you.
Sanemi Shinazugawa, the Wind Hashira, watched you from a distance, his usual stern expression softening as he observed your kindness. You were tending to Tanjiro, Inosuke, and Zenitsu, who had just arrived, helping Aoi with their treatment. Sanemi's chest tightened with an unfamiliar sensation—jealousy. He clenched his fists, feeling an irrational surge of anger. He knew how much he loved you, how fiercely protective he was of you, and seeing Tanjiro, someone he already had a strained relationship with, taking up your attention was unbearable.
Earlier that day, there had been an incident with one of the mansion's servants. The servant had raised his voice at you, and Sanemi had nearly lost control. The memory of your startled expression, the way your eyes had filled with tears, haunted him. He had come within a hair’s breadth of ending the servant's life, his anger only tempered by your soft plea for mercy.
"Sanemi, please," you had whispered, your gentle touch on his arm the only thing that had brought him back from the brink. He had glared at the servant one last time before storming off, his heart pounding with the intensity of his emotions.
Now, he stood in the shadows, watching you laugh softly with Tanjiro. The boy’s earnest expression as he spoke with you only fueled Sanemi’s jealousy. He should be the one making you smile like that. He should be the one basking in your warmth.
Unable to bear it any longer, Sanemi stepped forward, his presence immediately drawing the attention of everyone in the room. Tanjiro looked up, his smile faltering slightly at the sight of the Wind Hashira’s intense gaze."Y/N," Sanemi's voice was gruff, betraying his inner turmoil. "I need to talk to you."
You turned to him, concern flickering in your eyes. "Of course, Sanemi. Is everything alright?"
He nodded curtly, not trusting himself to speak further. You excused yourself from the others and followed him outside, where the evening air was cool and refreshing. The garden was bathed in the soft light of twilight, the flowers around you adding a sweet fragrance to the atmosphere.
Sanemi stopped by the koi pond, his back to you. You could see the tension in his shoulders, the way his hands were clenched at his sides. Gently, you reached out, placing a hand on his arm.
"Sanemi," you said softly, "what's wrong?"
He turned to face you, his eyes filled with a mix of emotions. "I can't stand seeing you with him," he confessed, his voice barely above a whisper. "With any of them."
You blinked in surprise. "Sanemi, they're just friends. I'm helping Aoi take care of them. There's nothing to worry about."
"It's not that simple," he muttered, looking away. "I can't help it. I get jealous. I know it's stupid, but... I love you. I can't stand the thought of anyone else taking your attention away from me."
Your heart ached at his words, and you stepped closer, placing a hand on his cheek. "Sanemi, you don't have to be jealous. My heart belongs to you. You're the one who protects me, who loves me. I care about them as friends, but you... you're everything to me."
He looked down at you, the fierce protectiveness in his eyes softening slightly. "You mean that?"
"Of course I do," you replied, smiling gently. "You have nothing to worry about."
Sanemi let out a breath he hadn't realized he was holding, his shoulders relaxing. He pulled you into his arms, holding you tightly as if afraid you might slip away.
"I'm sorry," he murmured into your hair. "I just... I can't lose you."
"You won't," you whispered back, wrapping your arms around him. "I'm here, Sanemi. Always."

La Llorona (3.2k)
read below or on ao3 • [tw: attempted drowning]
“It was true that he didn’t remember when he learned to swim, but he did remember his mother teaching him. That was a big part of why he was quickly getting tired of the topic matter at hand.”
“I don’t really remember when I learned how to swim,” Adrien shrugged, chin resting on his right hand as he passed the few remaining minutes of class conversing with his friends. Alya’s face turned down into a playful frown at his response, clearly unsatisfied with such a weak answer. Marinette watched the conversation in amusement while mindlessly chewing on a pencil—one already covered in teeth marks. They had all already told their own stories: Nino had been a natural swimmer, Marinette had to take a few years of swimming lessons, and Alya had told some kind of story about almost drowning at a water park with her older sister. Adrien hadn’t been able to follow that one very well.
“You can’t even remember bits and pieces?” she prompted. He felt like he was in some weird interview.
“Maybe you were just born knowing how to do everything, huh?” Nino teased from beside him before poking him with an elbow. He had started the conversation in the first place by mentioning how his little brother Chris had just started swimming lessons. Apparently, Chris was not enjoying them.
Adrien shrugged again, not entirely wanting to try and muster up bygone memories. “Oh, I don’t know, I must have learned at the hotel's pool with Chloe,” he awkwardly explained, trying to string together a story his friends would believe. When he really tried to remember, all he could see was fragmented pictures of his maman in her swimsuit, arms outstretched in a shallow pool that lapped around her waist. He could smell, slightly taste, the chlorine. It was true that he didn’t remember when he learned to swim, but he did remember his mother teaching him. That was a big part of why he was quickly getting tired of the topic matter at hand.
“Ugh, understood. If I had grown up being best friends with that girl I would also try to forget it,” Nino joked, making Alya and Marinette laugh. Adrien copied the sound—he had given up trying to justify Chloe’s place in his life, and even he wasn’t entirely sure she belonged there anymore—but the laugh he let out wasn’t nearly convincing enough.
Three pairs of eyes were immediately on him, stunning him into silence. It was like he had failed some invisible test.
The quiet held for a second too long before they started blurting apologies.
“Shit, dude, I’m sorry! I shouldn’t have said that, I know Chloe’s your friend and—”
“Yeah we didn’t mean to laugh, Adrien, we weren’t thinking.”
Marinette opened her mouth to begin her explanation when Adrien anxiously shut them down. “Guys, guys, it’s okay! I know you guys don’t like Chloe, but I also know you guys respect our friendship. It’s fine, really,” he assured them, squeezing Ninos shoulder comfortingly as he talked. “Anyways—,” he was desperate to get the attention off him “Why is Chris hating swim lessons?”
Nino laughed and began flapping his hands excitedly in the air, the previous tension quickly forgotten. “You’re never going to believe this, he’s scared of ‘La Llorona’.”
“‘The crying woman’? Isn’t she some kind of, like, Mexican folklore story to scare little kids?” Alya questioned, leaning towards her boyfriend enthusiastically.
“That’s exactly what I said! I was like ‘Chris, bro, we live in Paris. She’s all the way in Mexico, busy doing ghost things, no way she’s going to get you.’ But he’s convinced she’s out to find him! I don’t even know where he learned about it,” Nino recounted, laughing as he went. Maybe it was kinda childish to be scared of a ghost in a distant country; but in Chris’s defense, Adrien also felt uneasy about ghosts.
The idea of being haunted made his skin crawl.
“I’ve never heard of her. What’s the folklore?” he asked curiously, interest piqued.
“It’s actually kind of a gruesome story,” Marinette spoke up, but quickly looked like she regretted it as eyes turned to her. She looked down at her hands and fidgeted with the chewed pencil as she continued. “There’s a lot of different versions, but the most common one is a woman fell in love with a wealthy man, had his children, caught him cheating, and drowned their kids out of rage. Then she regretted it and drowned herself out of guilt, leaving her weeping ghost to haunt rivers and streams, crying out for her children. It’s usually used to keep kids away from bodies of water, especially at night. Supposedly if you hear her sobs, she’ll find you, then drown you when she realizes you aren’t her child.” Marinette shivered with the final sentence, clearly recalling something. She combed her fingers through a pigtail and let out a tense giggle. “My grandma goes on trips all over the world. She went to Mexico when I was in kindergarten, then decided to tell me that story when she got back. I was scared of the seine for months, so I can’t really blame Chris.”
“Your parents must have been mad.” Alya smirked.
“My mom definitely was! She was convinced I would never get over it, and I’d have a fear of water all my life. I forgot about it when summer came around and I got to go to the pool.” The girls were talking now, carried away with their own conversation.
Adrien didn’t mind. He was busy mulling over the new story.
“—rien? Adrien!” Nino shook him hard, eyeing him up and down like his friend had done something suspicious. It felt almost invasive, and made Adrien squirm in his seat. “Dude, you’re out of it. What are you thinking about?”
He stopped, and thought for a moment. Then the words got the better of him and before he could stop it the question spilled out. “Do you think she loved them?” Adrien asked, eyes locked with Nino’s.
“Who? The—La Llorona? I mean, I guess she loved her kids. All parents do, right?”
“No, I mean—I mean do you think she did it because she loved them?”
Adrien’s attention turned to the phone in his hand, a notification lighting up his lockscreen. It usually rotated through different pictures he had picked out, but right now it was settled on one of him and his mother. “Do you think she drowned them because she loved them, maybe just too much?”
Before Nino could respond, the bell rang out. Class was over, Adrien needed to go home, and Nino had to take Chris to his swim lesson.

Maman looked so pretty in the pool. The way her hair shined in the sun, and the corners of her mouth wrinkled when she smiled. The clear, bright blue water that stopped at her knees. The thin silver band on her left ring finger reflected the sun brightly, as did the silver feather earrings dangling from her ears. She always wore jewelry. Her green eyes reminded him of the grass that grew beside water in the books she’d read him. It made him happy to have the same green eyes.
Adrien was four years old, right at the age where he was blathering out any words he could, and consciously exploring all the different sensations that came with being alive. But today he had a swimming lesson, which meant listening to his mother.
Emilie stood, merely a foot away on the second step, cooing and trying to coax her living ball of sunshine to dip a foot in the pool. “Adrien, darling, I promise the pool won’t hurt you,” she assured, leaning over and slipping a few fingers into his palm to grasp. He did so tightly, then slowly stepped down onto the first step into the pool. It was cool, almost ticklish, against his skin and thankfully only rose to his shins at this height.
“See!” she smiled, almost purring the words. She pulled her fingers from his grasp, lowered to the bottom step, and splashed the summer water towards her little student. He giggled and shielded his face, though the splash only reached his stomach. “Next step, now.”
Adrien’s laugh caught in his throat. The next step was deep, too deep, but… she was standing right there, lip-glossed smile beaming at him.
She wouldn’t make him go too deep. Maman was safe.
He stepped forward cautiously, missing the tight grip he had on her hand just before, and slowly found his footing. The water now pooled just above his hips, the sloshing waves from their movement gently pulling him this way and that. His arms hovered above the water's surface at his sides, refusing to fall victim to the pool just yet.
“You’re a natural, little minnow!” Emilie cheered, then sucked in her cheeks and pursed her lips to make a kissy face, trying to imitate a fish. Only she looked more like she had bitten into a much too sour lemon, which made Adrien laugh again, even harder this time. His arms dropped slightly and an elbow dipped into the water, making him squeal suddenly.
“It’s cold, Maman!” he whimpered, wanting to retreat back to the shaded table where their towels and pool supplies resided while they swam. Adrien’s gaze was locked over his shoulder on the dry, warm spot a few feet away when Emilie snapped her fingers to get his attention again.
It worked immediately.
“Darling, it’s the perfect temperature. Don’t let the water scare you,” she comforted him, reaching out again to offer a hand to hold. Adrien’s smaller hand took it urgently. “Last step.”
If the previous step had come anywhere close to scary, the last step was utterly daunting. Plunging one foot further into the depths of the water, the surface rose up to his chin. When he tried to lift his other foot it felt rooted to the concrete stair that held him above the water, and he couldn’t find the strength to rip off the bandaid. Thankfully, Emilie had strength to spare for her minnow, and using her free hand she hooked two fingers around his ankle, then sternly pulled it to the final step.
“Ah-ah-ah,” she cooed in her sing-songy voice, hands receding from the young boys’ space again before pushing at the bottom of his chin. His mouth opened to protest but she tilted his head back, letting his golden hair fall and soak up the chlorine-rich water..
Now the water lapped at the edges of his face as he stood, tiptoed, and tilted back. He looked up towards the sky, closing his eyes to block out the harsh sun, and urgently trying not to panic over the water sloshing in his ears. His arms floated in the water at his sides, and he was too aware of the open space where nothing could be grabbed onto. Adrien could hardly hear Emilie, if she was singing her praises at all, but if it was because of his submerged ears or his racing heart he couldn’t tell. After a few seconds—a few too many for small Adrien—she plucked him from the step and placed him on her hip, giving him a moment to rub the water from his hair and ears.
“Wonderful, mon bébé!” She was laughing as she whirled him through the pool, hands tucked under his armpits as they spun in excited circles. “Was that so bad?”
Adrien waited until they stilled to respond. “My ears went under the water,” he muttered, trying to balance in her grasp and holding onto her shoulders. “My eyes were closed, too. I was scared.”
Emilie pouted, maybe trying to give him a sympathetic frown, but it only made him feel smaller. It was the kind of look that a passersby gave a baby throwing a tantrum. “You’re okay,” she assured gently, holding him against her chest and lifting a hand from the water to push a wet strand of golden hair from his forehead. He leaned into the touch of her palm. “When you’re with Maman or Père, you’re always okay.” Their eyes locked and Emilie’s smile dropped. Her left thumb slowly grazed over her ring when she continued. “You know that, right, little minnow?”
The words spilled out before he even knew what he was going to say. “Yes, Maman.”
Yes, he was okay so long as Maman and Papa were there. Mother and Father would always keep him safe.
“Wonderful, darling. Now, let’s try doggy paddling.”
✧⋄⋆⋅⋆⋄✧⋄⋆⋅⋆⋄✧⋄⋆⋅⋆⋄✧⋄⋆⋅⋆⋄✧⋄⋆⋅⋆⋄✧⋄⋆⋅⋆⋄✧⋄⋆⋅⋆⋄✧⋄⋆⋅⋆⋄✧
It had been a grueling hour in the pool, consisting mainly of Adrien clinging either to his mother’s shoulders or the wall of the pool. The doggy paddling had been too scary, treading water was too exhausting, and floating on his back was too overwhelming.
Worst of all, Emilie was starting to get angry. She had even screamed at him when he tried clambering out of the pool.
Adrien hated making Maman angry. Her eyebrows would twitch when she furrowed them together, and she often brought a hand up to pinch the bridge of her nose in frustration. It made him feel stupid, and wrong, like he had broken some rule. Sometimes—though Adrien wouldn’t admit it for many years to come—it made him angry too. Angry enough to want to rip piano keys out of their places. Angry enough to want to destroy things with a single touch.
Angry enough to try and climb out of the pool during a swimming lesson. Which was, of course, unacceptable.
“Honestly, Adrien, you’re behaving like a brat! Are you stupid?” She snapped, top lip pulled back in a snarl, letting her canines shine in the sun. Adrien could feel them closing in on him. Even at her worst, he only wanted her to hold him close. It never really mattered if he was alive or dead when she did it—he just wished she wouldn’t yell.
“I’m scared, M-Maman!” He hiccuped, clinging desperately to the roughly textured wall. It stung the pruning skin of his fingers, threatening to cut his raw fingertips. Adrien didn't notice over his own sobs and wracked breathing.
“Stop crying already!” Emilie lunged forward to rip her son from the wall, ignoring his wails of refusal. He urgently grabbed for the wall as she carried him towards the middle of the water, muttering under her breath. The only things Adrien could pick up was ‘useless fucking kid’ and ‘made you to be better than this’.
The words didn’t fully register in his panic-stricken brain. The only thing he knew for certain was real in that moment was the steady stream of warm tears pouring from his eyes. Until Maman reached out, palm cupping his tear stained cheek, and gently wiped at the droplets clinging to his eyelashes. Adrien’s eyes opened and took her in, eyes half-lidded and eyebrows pressed together. She was as comforting as she was terrifying, which was an intense combination of emotions for four year old Adrien.
“Don’t make me repeat myself again. There’s nothing to be scared of,” she said intensely.
It made the tears stop and hiccups pause—it even took some of his breath away. Adrien’s mother was like a being of pure emotion, raw and untethered, changing at the snap of her fingers. Emilie could play people like a violin, and this was her philosophy when it came to maternal matters.
“Nothing to be scared of,” he whispered in repetition, eyes still glued to hers. His muscles relaxed, and he softened into his mothers hold. Truthfully, Adrien always thought it was much more comfortable once he stopped fighting.
Emilie smiled and nodded, then turned to look at the empty pool around them. Her hair was still radiant in the sun, but now the ends had gotten soggy and knotted as they dipped in and out of the water.
“M-Maman, can we stop now?” Adrien asked softly, unable to stop the trembling pout his lips formed. “Please?”
She blinked. Swallowed, then clicked her tongue against her teeth. It was a nauseating sound. “Only if you can swim, little minnow.” His body froze when her eyes targeted back onto him, his stomach turning when he saw her gaping smile. “Show me how you swim.”
In the blink of an eye, Adrien was forced under the surface, water overtaking his mouth and nose before he even thought to close or cover them. It stung, like a wasp had crawled through his throat and made a nest in his lungs, infesting him from the inside out. He gasped for air, desperate to cool the burning taking hold of his chest, but only inhaled water.
He was screaming, crying, violently thrashing in the water as he tried to breach the surface. The sounds only left his mouth in muted air bubbles, floating past his vision to the surface his body screamed for. But it was useless against the tightly gripped hand around his throat.
Maybe Maman just couldn’t hear him when he was so deep under the water. Maman wouldn’t mean to hurt him.
The water churned against his limbs, thwarting his efforts to kick and paddle back to air. He was quickly losing hope that there was any kind of escape. This is what baby birds who fall from their nest too early must feel like. Weak, defenseless, kicking and screaming and fighting to stay alive in a terrain that only wants them dead.
At least those birds can breathe.
Adrien stopped fighting when fatigue overtook him. His legs went limp and arms crossed his torso, enveloping himself in a tight hug under the water. There was some comfort to be found in that, even in the worst situations. He let the water envelop him, too tired to continue. His muscles eased, repeating the lesson he’d learned just before. Pain and terror are so much more comfortable once you stop trying to fight them.
His eyes closed. His body stopped screaming.
Then it was over.
Fresh air swarmed his lungs, bringing up the chlorinated water he’d swallowed. It tasted like stomach acid and summer.
“My poor little minnow,” Emilie murmured as she sat him on the wall of the pool. He coughed and gagged as she slowly rubbed his back, occasionally raising her hand to pet his soaked, ruffled hair. Her voice—usually spilling over with emotion—was monotone and brief, like she was stating a fact. There was no comfort in her words, only recognition that he was suffering. No apology, no explanation. No loving coos and empty promises of safety. Only a mother and her son.
“I-I couldn’t breathe, why Ma—” he sputtered, coughing and stumbling over the words.
She cut him short.“I already said, Adrien. No more squalling.”
He was quiet. His lungs still ached and his throat felt like it was burning, but his lips remained sealed. Any screams or cries were trapped out of his reach.
“You’re okay, aren’t you? No blood, no bruises. Good as new.” She beamed at him. “Nothing bad happened, darling. Let’s get you toweled off and head inside for lunch. You can learn to swim tomorrow.”
Emilie swam through the pool, leaving Adrien sitting on the edge. He watched her silently as she ascended the steps out of the water and made her way to him, then plucked him from the ground like a feather. He usually loved when Maman would carry him around on her hip. This time he felt like a prisoner of sorts, anchored to her side while his own emotions, thoughts, and wants were cast aside to cater to his warden.
“Yes, Maman.”

One Shot | Worth the Heartbreak
WARNING:
I usually don’t post stuff that has specific warnings, but I think this one may be warranted. I wrote this from a prompt about loss and death of a dear friend who spent years developing a friendship only to have it taken away. I wrote this to be emotionally wrecking and it is meant to be uncomfortable. More importantly, I wrote this to be real. Life is tough and sometimes really bad things happen that we have to endure.
What matters is the strength and the growth each one of these difficult opportunities provide. Bad things happen – good. We can get stronger from them. Life is a test of endurance, mental fortitude, and indominable spirit. Life is a test of forgiveness and learning to trust and love again. Life is messy and sometimes leaves scars and baggage, but isn’t that proof that you lived?
Leave your baggage behind, put the essentials in a backpack, and travel through life with us. Life is too short to haul a mountain of things behind you.
Hopefully, this will help show how precious life is.
If you are uncomfortable or unsure about what was stated above, I don’t advise you read this.
The prompt is listed below.

Still here with me?
Good.
Let’s go…
~~~~~^*^*^*^*^~~~~~
The rain pounded over the windshield. Lightning illuminated the sky in quick, flickering bursts. It felt like the paparazzi snapping picture after picture.
As much as she loved the rain, she hated the lightning just for that reason; but that was years ago.
Thankfully, she would be away from all that mess. She liked begin away from all of it.
Vanessa spotted her shared home just around the corner and braced herself mentally to get completely and utterly soaked. She pulled into her parking spot and looked up at the house as another bolt of lightning streaked out across the sky.
Two quick breaths. Focus. Imagine the movements.
Trust your body to move.
Vanessa stopped dead as she recalled his mantra to her. Curses she thought as her whole body slipped further down in the driver’s seat. It’s been years and it still gets to me.
Vanessa took a minute to collect herself before charging into the deluge before her. Rain hammered at her shirt and pelted her face. The distance was only about twenty meters or so, which was basically no distance at all, but it still soaked her to her bones.
Thankfully, Vanessa prepared and had her keys ready, so the moment the door was open it was closed again with a solid thud.
The quiet of the house was a welcome one, but unsettling at the same time. Vanessa’s roommate, Jody, was far from quiet. Constant chatterbox. Endless conversant. Unfathomable irrelevant facts.
Jody was noisy.
A quiet house didn’t suit her, so it immediately made Vanessa suspicious that there was no sound. It honestly was a bit welcome. After days of travel, Vanessa was ready to relax.
“Surprise!”
Spoke too soon.
Vanessa hadn’t made it two steps away from the entrance when Jody jumped out from the living room doorway. Her backpack was barely off of her shoulder when Jody rushed over and gave her friend a massive hug, her dark curls bouncing playfully as she pranced over.
“Happy Birthday! I missed you!”
Birthday?
That’s right!
Vanessa’s bewildered look wasn’t cleared away fast enough as Jody pulled away to look at her friend.
“Ness! You forgot it was your birthday?!” Jody scolded. Vanessa looked away scarlet cheeked.
“Well, traveling will do that to you,” she mumbled. “And what is this ‘surprise’ nonsense. Don’t tell me you invited people over for a surprise birthday party.”
“No! Ya’ goof,” Jody chided playfully as she rolled her eyes. “I know you’d hate that. I did get you a gift though. Come on! I want to see your face when you open it!”
As well as being a chatterbox, Jody was actually a very thoughtful gift giver. It came from years of talking and weaseling out every story and secret from her victims.
Everyone, that is, except for Vanessa. While a few drunk evenings allowed Jody some stories, Vanessa kept many things close to her chest. It was only natural for the ultimate gossip girl to gravitate toward Vanessa. Every year since the two had become friends, Jody managed to pull off some really great gifts despite the challenges.
“Jody, you didn’t have to get me anyth-.”
“Shush your face and open!” said Jody gleefully as she guided Vanessa into the living room toward a small box fifteen centimeters in all directions. “No shaking. Fragile. Just tear and relish in the joy. Ah! I’m so excited for you to see!”
Vanessa rolled her eyes and tapped the frilly pink paper. The box sounded hollow, which was concerning for Vanessa.
“Good grief, Jody. Did you give me an empty box to start some scavenger hunt?” moaned Vanessa. What she really wanted was a nap after the jetlag set in on the drive back. Too late. Jody’s camera was already on and recording.
“Nope! It’s in there,” smiled Jody. “Now, come on!”
Her whining tone told Vanessa that Jody was moments away from completely imploding and opening the package herself. Relinquishing control, Vanessa sighed and opened the box. Tearing the paper was a bit of a trick because of the ultra-durable clear tape Jody used. Eventually, the paper pealed away to reveal the top of a cardboard box and the tab to open the box.
“Jody, I swear if this is part of your bottle cap collection, I’m…” Vanessa’s voice trailed off as she pried the top off of the box and looked inside.
She looked back.
A pet.
It was a small humanoid. They had been around for a while. Genetically designed, they were practically identical to humans except for their size.
Immediately, Vanessa’s body started to shake. It began as a tremble and escalated quickly to full blown shakes. Her heart was racing. She couldn’t breathe.
This was the last thing she wanted.
“Surprise! Do you like her? I spent quite a bit of time making sure I found the perfect one for y-… Oh! Ness! Don’t cry! I knew you’d love it; well, her,” squealed Jody.
Vanessa hadn’t even realized tears were pouring down her cheeks. From being shaken earlier to now, it was quickly spiraling Vanessa out of control. Vanessa, now hyperventilating, backed away from the box and curled into a ball on the couch.
Now was when Jody realized her reading of the situation was wrong.
“Ness? Ness, are you alright?” Jody put her phone away and rushed over to her friend’s side, reaching her arms around her to hug her.
“W-w-why… did you get that?” Vanessa choked out as she focused on her breathing to calm herself down.
“That? Oh, her? I… well… I thought you… you’d… you know… that you’d like one. I asked your sister an-.”
Vanessa threw her friend’s arms off of her and she glared at her friend, or so she thought, and snarled, “You did what?!”
Jody was absolutely stunned. Words escaped her. Vanessa had never reared her head at Jody like this. They’d had their disagreements and spats, but nothing that made Vanessa act like this.
“I… uh… I mean… yeah. I messaged her to get some ideas for your birthday. It… was on my Insta. She said she knew your birthday was around the corner and said you used to have a pet that you really liked when you were young. I confirmed it with your parents and th-…”
“You what?!” shrieked Vanessa. As if the couch were charged with a live wire, Vanessa leaped off of the couch and staggered away. “Jody, please tell me you’re joking!”
Jody barely shook her head “no” before Vanessa crumpled onto her knees and covered her face, sobbing uncontrollably. Jody tried again to console her friend, but this time only handed Vanessa some tissues.
“Sweetie, I’m so sorry. I… I’m obviously missing something, but I want you to know I didn’t mean it. I swear. I just wanted to give you something great for your birthday,” urged Jody.
Vanessa, on the other hand, could only see red.
Hurt.
Pain.
Everything she had left behind.
“Jody, why? Why why why why why why why?”
“Why what?” Ness, you’re not making sense. Take a breath. Just… talk to me,” said Jody. Vanessa couldn’t manage any words at this point. Too many feelings and emotions were wracking her body. Memory after memory played in front of her eyes. Emotions she’d forgotten she had threatened to strangle her.
Out of all of her emotions, grief was the one that wrenched at her heart.
She wasn’t sure how or when, but she found herself on the couch balling her eyes out and then, after some unknown span of time, she found her voice again. There was a warm mug of tea in front of her and Jody had wrapped a few thick blankets over her shoulders, taking a seat nearby and waiting for her friend to come back.
Vanessa, eyes puffy and stinging, blinked away the blur as she twisted around on the couch and sat upright. The box was gone and, instead, there was a cage in the corner of the room by the window where Vanessa saw a pair of heterochromia eyes vanish.
Just that motion alone formed a lump in Vanessa’s throat. She had half a mind to retreat to her room and not say anything, but it was seeing Jody’s face and the red rims around her eyes that made her rethink those actions. It wasn’t time to forgive her friend, but an explanation was warranted.
After all, Jody didn’t know everything that happened back then. She didn’t know how it all started.
Vanessa leaned forward and clasped the mug in her hands. The warmth spread through her frigid, calloused fingers. It was soothing and brought some semblance of comfort as she sipped the steaming liquid.
“Hey,” Jody said weakly.
“Hey.” Vanessa’s voice was raw and dry like sandpaper. She took another drink of tea and gestured for her friend to join her closer on the couch. Jody practically vaporized from her spot to sit beside her friend.
“Ness, I just wanted to say that I am so sorry. I thought I was doing something good and thoughtful and…”
“It’s okay,” mumbled Vanessa. In her mind, everything wasn’t okay; however, for Jody’s sake she needed to at least invite a dialogue. “It was… just a lot. I’m drained from travel and then everything hit me all at once.”
Jody nodded and glanced at the cage before looking back to her friend and roommate.
“Do… never mind.”
“What?” asked Vanessa. Jody chewed on her bottom lip before she looked back at her friend as if afraid to ask. Vanessa already knew what her friend wanted. “You want to know why I was upset.”
Her conclusion lingered in the air before Vanessa continued.
“Jody, if I tell you, you have to swear that you will never utter a word of this to anyone. I mean anyone. If I find out you did, I swear I’l-.”
“I swear on all I hold dear I won’t say a word,” promised Jody. The look in her eyes was enough of a promise for her counterpart.
With that, Vanessa took a breath and started to speak. It was strange. Other than her journal, she had never confided this information into another living soul.
~~~^*^*^~~~
It started with a move when she was ten years old. Her gymnastics career was already showing great promise. Many of her instructors said that she should consider going professional and try out for the Olympic teams. These seeds of promise inspired her parents to move across the country and hire some of the most esteemed gymnasts who would be willing to teach her.
The very first day was filled with intense training and countless drills. All around, Vanessa saw other girls who were stronger, faster, and more flexible than her. Every turn produced someone who was far more skilled than she was at performing her routines.
It made her feel alone.
It wasn’t until the very end when her gymnastics instructors wanted to have a meeting with her parents that she noticed the cage at the corner of the room and a pet sitting up against the edge of the bars. Vanessa’s fascination with the small human-like creatures was insatiable and she ended up going over and sticking her fingers against the bars.
The pet was an older male. His silvery brown hair came to his shoulders, and he looked tired but well groomed. His legs were out straight, and his arms were folded across his chest. He was wearing something that resembled athletic wear, which included a shirt and sports shorts that came to his knees.
“Hey there little guy,” she cooed, never having interacted with a pet before. She wiggled her finger, but the pet did nothing to acknowledge her existence. He simply leaned back further against the cage and sighed. “What’s your name?”
Still no response. Vanessa felt a bit off-put by the small creature and looked down to see a sign.
“Norden: The Community Pet. Please do NOT feed, touch, handle, or release the pet without supervision from Dimitri.”
Dimitri was her instructor!
“Norden? Is that your name? Norden?” The pet sighed before opening his eyes and looking at Vanessa. His light blue eyes almost looked gray. They were orbs that contained a wispy sky, and Vanessa was immediately hypnotized by them.
“Do you require something?” he asked bluntly. His voice was deep and he had some kind of accent that made him sound incredibly sophisticated. Awed, Vanessa shook her head and smiled.
“N-no. I just wanted to come over and say hi. I’ve never seen a pet in person before,” Vanessa replied. As a child, the concept of pets was a natural one. Her youth played into her innocents of the reality of the situation. Everyone else was okay with pets, and she naturally adopted the concept.
The pet sighed and shook his head before leaning back against the wall.
“Well, if you don’t have anything to contribute to the conversation, then I’m afraid I must decline engagement,” he said. Vanessa didn’t quite understand what he meant until he said, “So, leave me alone.”
He didn’t raise his voice.
He didn’t say anything overly unkind.
Still, it made Vanessa wilt and shuffle off to retrieve her belongings. It was disheartening. She always liked little critters and the commercials and stores always made pets seem so friendly. She didn’t think they could be so dismissive, and she certainly didn’t think they could be capable of hurting her feelings.
The days turned to weeks which turned into months. She found herself gravitating toward the cage every few days while she stretched just to say “hi” to the little man in the cage. Responding wasn’t Norden’s forte, but he sometimes acknowledged her presence with a grunt or a huff.
Vanessa’s presence wasn’t just being ignored by the pet in the cage. The other girls and a few of the boys had recently taken to making little remarks and comments to Vanessa or around her about her lack of skill. These jabs initially didn’t bother the youngster, seeing that she figured she was just learning and that she would get better with time.
It was the constant comments that, after six months, really started getting to her. Vanessa tried being strong and even brought it up to her instructors and teachers, but none of them were able to really do anything about it. Even when they held a group meeting talking about sportsmanship and keeping belittling to a minimum, the comments didn’t stop and were now said more subtly.
The jabs came from outside and, sadly, from within. Vanessa’s older sister, Caroline, also had choice words for her little sister. Caroline loved tumbling and gymnastics, but a serious injury knocked her out of competitions for the rest of her career. Jealousy fueled her when Vanessa began to shine and when their parents moved them for Vanessa’s gymnast career.
To make matters worse, Vanessa was struggling. In part of her routine, she was having a particularly hard time with part of her maneuver. There was a sequence of extremely advanced moves that Caroline or the other students had never managed to reach, and Vanessa felt the constant rath from her sister and her peers. No matter how she stretched or twisted, her body refused to move the way she wanted it to, and it usually left her flat on her face.
“Enough for now,” said Dimitri as he pointed to the stretch mat by the cage. “Go stretch it out and I’ll be with you in a moment. I have to work with the other students.”
Vanessa tried to hide her disappointment in herself as she stepped to the side. The glances from the others felt like daggers in her back. If ever there was a demise by a thousand cuts, this was it.
She sat down on the ground and began stretching as her body started to tremble. Her eyes began to burn. Nothing felt right. Did she even want to do this anymore? Was she really ready to try out for the bigger teams? What if she got hurt? Everything would be for nothing.
That’s when she heard it.
“Two quick breaths.”
Vanessa thought she’d imagined it, but then she heard it again.
“Come on. Chin up. Two quick breaths.”
Vanessa twisted herself around and looked up and spotted Norden’s face peering down at her through the bars. He was leaned over casually, and his hands were through the bars, neck craned to get a better look at her.
This was the first time he had said anything remotely constructive to her, and she instinctually followed the command.
One breath.
Two breaths.
“Good. Now. Focus,” said Norden. “Imagine the movements. Think about how your body is going to move through them. Align them in your mind. Play them over and over in slow motion. Trust your body to move.”
Stunned didn’t come close to describing her emotional state, but Vanessa suddenly found herself turned to face the pet as he stared down at her and continued to provide instruction. It was all one sided. It was more of a pep talk than instructions but focusing on the pet’s words made Vanessa feel worlds better.
“Think you’ve got it?” asked Norden.
Vanessa nodded. “I… think so.”
“Good. Now, go do it,” stated Norden as he gestured back to the mats.
Vanessa’s heart was racing as she pushed herself up and walked back onto the mats. The others had something to say about her returning before she was called, but Dimitri’s expression was that of someone who was intrigued. He allowed her to perform the maneuver again with the accompanying warning.
“But just once more.”
Vanessa nodded and stood at the edge of the mat.
The pet’s words played over in her head.
Two quick breaths. Focus. Imagine the movements. Trust your body to move.
She took off running and felt something inside her shift. The overthinking that plagued her had vanished. Every move was already planned out, and now she was just executing it. She twisted and spun through the air, sticking the landing and managing every maneuver perfectly.
Everyone’s jaws were on the floor, even Dimitri’s, but Vanessa was simply beaming as she looked over at the cage and saw the subtle salute from the pet. Practice continued as scheduled. The others continued to shoot snide comments at Vanessa, but she didn’t care. Her eyes were fixed onto the cage where the pet currently was stretching.
While the parents had their meetings and the others scurried over to their corner to smack talk behind her back, Vanessa rushed over to the edge of the cage and peered in at Norden.
“Hey,” she said softly, gaining the pet’s attention as he was currently meditating. He sighed and leaned back on his hands while his legs were crossed.
“Yes? Do you require something?”
“No. Just… thank you. You really helped me, Norden. So, thank you,” smiled Vanessa. She pressed her finger against the bars of the cage and continued to smile even as Norden scoffed lightly and went back to his meditating.
Vanessa returned every day before, during, and after practice to talk to Norden from then on. While the pet rarely engaged in conversation, Vanessa finally figured out how she could make him say more than three or four words.
She would ask him what she was doing wrong.
Evidently, Norden had a keen eye and had been watching Vanessa during her routines. He knew the terminology and began instructing Vanessa on how to better tighten or loosen some of her maneuvers to make everything flow easily. The instruction she received from Norden, a pet, allowed her to improve dramatically with every meeting she had with him.
Then, a month after they began their “conversations,” Norden accidentally let it slip that he had felt a bit sorry for her. He evidently had been listening to all of the criticisms the others were giving their newest teammate, and he took offence to it. He especially found it appalling that her sister would take out her personal frustrations on her. Through Vanessa, he was able to enact an odd sense of justice and vengeance on the kids who so frequently tormented him.
“So, you heard all of that, huh?” asked Vanessa. Norden sighed and nodded.
“Much like yourself, so many forget we ‘pets’ can hear and form opinions of our own. These children have no business picking on you when they look like seals being tossed around by an orca. You, on the other hand, have potential. You have heart and spirit, and they all know it. It’s why you’re the focal point of their torment,” explained Norden.
“So… that means we’re kind of in the same boat,” proposed Vanessa. Norden scoffed and shook his head.
“Hardly. You, unlike me, are human. I am a pet, obviously. You have the opportunity to avoid and conquer your adversaries. As a pet, I’m stuck here in this cage completely and utterly alone. I have to forge my own path with no one to assist me,” grumbled Norden. Vanessa grinned seeing this “grumpy old man act.”
Then, it hit her.
“Well, I don’t see you as a pet,” said Vanessa. Norden shook his head again in defeat.
“Not possible. My size alone is something that can’t be ignored or negated,” he stated.
“No, I mean… I’d rather see you as a friend than as a pet.”
These words struck a chord in Norden and, just for a moment, his features softened as he looked at Vanessa.
“Friend?”
“Yeah, someone to talk to and someone to help you when you need it,” said Vanessa. The pet sighed, but his shoulders slumped. He was obviously amused in his defeat.
“That is very thoughtful of you, darling, but I don’t think pets and humans can be friends. It’s in our nature to act in opposition despite our conditioning.”
Norden’s opinion hurt but was put to the test only a week later when Dimitri announced he was moving. Evidently, he had some family issues at home and needed to return as soon as possible. With that being said, he could not take Norden back with him.
Despite the pet being the “community pet,” Norden technically belonged to Dimitri at the end of the day.
Vanessa saw her chance.
She knew she had to act fast.
Before practice could start, Vanessa ran up to Dimitri and pulled him to the side.
“Um… Dimitri? I… um… I wanted to ask you something before you left. Do… you think I could come by and visit you and Norden?” Vanessa wasn’t sure how her instructor would respond, but the guilt pang in his eye told her something was up.
“Alas, no. I would like to visit and make sure to stay up to date with your training, but you won’t be able to visit Norden. He’s not coming with me,” Dimitri replied.
“You’re not… taking him with you?” asked Vanessa. Her heart fluttered and flipped at this news. She was stunned that Dimitri could just leave Norden behind. Was he even going to miss his pet? Did Dimitri even care about Norden? What did Norden want?
“No. Sadly, where I’m going I can’t take him with me,” sighed Dimitri as he gave the cage a passive glance. Vanessa didn’t pick up an abundance of sympathy from her instructor, but she didn’t address it. She had an idea.
“So, what are you going to do with Norden then?” asked Vanessa. Dimitri glanced at the cage and then back to the little girl he had been training for just over a year now.
“Well, I had planned on giving him to a nearby pet shelter. I can’t take him with me, and the facility here only let me keep him because I worked here,” Dimitri replied. The instructor was no fool. He had been watching Vanessa interact with Norden for quite some time now and decided to beat the little girl to the punch. It was the least he could do.
“But, I was going to ask if you wanted to take him before bringing him to the shelter. He’s a bit of a handful, no pun intended. Would you like that?”
“Yes!” Vanessa’s excitement exploded out of her already racing heart as she jumped up and down and cheered. “Thank you! Thank you thank you thank you thank you!” As she hugged her instructor, she could see Norden’s smile as he listened in to the entire conversation.
Explaining to her parents about Norden was another issue altogether, but her family ultimately yielded. The one who was the most upset about it was her older sister, Caroline, who had been asking for a kitten for her birthday. It irked Vanessa that her little sister got a pet before her, and it only compounded once Norden was settled into his new home.
“I know it’s not going to be the same,” said Vanessa as she placed the cage in the shady part of her window as he requested. “But I didn’t want you to be sent away. I’m sorry. I should’ve asked.”
Norden shook his head and smiled as he evaluated the little girl’s room.
“Hardly. I wasn’t looking forward to the shelter either. I… should thank you,” he stated.
“Don’t worry about it. It’s what friends are for. My home is your home,” she smiled. The words took the pet off guard again, but this time he made no snide remarks about how friendship between pets and humans couldn’t exist.
Instead, he stepped to the edge of the cage and continued to evaluate the room.
The little Vanessa beamed and glanced at the cage door. It hadn’t opened since she had known Norden, and finally she had access to opening the gate. The real question was whether or not she had permission.
“Um… do… do you want out? You know, to explore and stuff?” asked Vanessa. Norden’s entire posture went rigid as he whipped around, expression shifting to disbelief.
“Really?”
“Mh-hmm.” Vanessa carefully reached over and unfastened the door, tugging the creaking metal free. To the pet’s surprise, Vanessa actually stepped back away from the edge of the cage and the table he was on top of. She didn’t reach in. She didn’t try to grab him. She made no gesture to even stroke his head as so many others had done in the past. “It’s okay. I’ll stay over here if that makes you feel more comfortable.”
Norden carefully stepped over to the door and, in one quick motion, leapt over the edge and was on the table. His awe at being set free, even temporarily, still seemed hesitant, as if he was bracing himself to be grabbed or pinched by Vanessa. When neither of those things happened, he took to walking around the desk and even climbing part of the cage to see what was further down on the ground.
He eventually returned to his cage, but he was overjoyed when Vanessa said she could leave the cage door open for him so he could get out and stretch his legs and everything.
“You… would really do that?” asked Norden. Vanessa nodded. “Even with the threat I might run away?”
This notion confused Vanessa, but even her youthful mind came up with a satisfactory response.
“Well, I mean you could if you wanted to. I don’t think you know anyone else nearby, so if you wanted to leave you should tell me so I can get you some supplies and stuff. I… wish you’d stay, but I won’t keep you here if you don’t want to me. A friend wouldn’t do that.”
Those words rang true to Norden and, after a beat, it was decided. Though he was resigned he couldn’t change being a pet, he decided that being Vanessa’s pet wasn’t the worst thing in the world.
From then on, the two of them were practically inseparable. Vanessa initially would leave Norden to his own affairs in the morning and afternoon before returning home later after evening practice to do her homework with Norden by her side. Vanessa would talk about how her day went and the different routines she did during practice, but describing it wasn’t enough.
It took only two weeks for Norden to actually suggest that Vanessa bring him with her to school and, subsequently, practice where he could actually assist right then and there.
“I’m doing this for your benefit, Vanessa,” said Norden. “If you don’t require my help or have no need of it, I’m alright with this. Your career is what I’m considering in this offer.”
Vanessa couldn’t contain her unbounding joy as she accepted his offer. She wanted to bring Norden along to class and to practice from the beginning simply because she enjoyed his company so very much, but she didn’t want to pressure Norden into coming with her; especially after some of the stories he told her about what he had experiences as a pet throughout his life.
So, their adventures began.
Every morning, Norden would successfully stow away in Vanessa’s bag in a secure spot that was hidden. It kept him safe and still let him move around freely. She would move off to the side during lunch so she could talk to him before helping him hide once again.
From there, the two of them would go to practice. Everyone knew Norden had been gifted to her, but the instructors were always sure to keep Norden away from the other students while Vanessa was away. He had a place on one of the shelves which had a great overview of the mats and, therefore, Vanessa and her routines.
There were a few times where there were some close calls. Some of the students tried getting Norden down by luring him down from the shelf and even making a grab for him, but the instructors quickly discouraged that behavior and shooed them away. They advised that Vanessa shouldn’t bring Norden along because he was “distracting,” but Vanessa quickly made the argument that Norden helped her focus on her routine and that she needed him.
A note from a doctor and a chat with her parents later meant Norden was protected as an “emotional support pet.”
“I really disapprove of being labeled as an ‘emotional support pet,’ but there is nothing more satisfying than sticking it to those handsy hormonal teenagers,” grinned Norden one evening after practice while Vanessa was stretching. “Don’t forget to breathe deeply as your stretch. Fill your lungs and hold for a moment before releasing.”
“I’m just glad you’re here with me, Norden. I couldn’t do any of this without you and your help,” said Vanessa as she followed the small man’s instructions. She let herself bend and twist as he instructed, tension and parts of her body relaxing as she did so.
“Hardly,” he scoffed as he folded his arms across his chest. “Don’t get it in your head that your abilities are dependent on me. Get it in your head that you need me as some kind of good luck charm, and you’ll have a crutch for the rest of your life.”
“Can do, sir; but I don’t think having you as a crutch would be such a bad thing,” replied Vanessa. The moment she called him “sir” made Norden straighten up ever so slightly. There was a beam of pride and embarrassment in his cheeks only for a moment before he snapped back to his usual stoic self.
This routine continued for years. The stoic nature eventually was chipped away to reveal a thoughtful, caring soul in Norden. The routines increased in difficulty. Tryouts came and went. Competitions consumed every waking moment when Vanessa wasn’t at practice.
At every turn, she made sure Norden was there with her. He never missed a practice and was always there during competition day. His sage advice broke through to her at every turn. The trust she had in him and the trust he had in her was hard fought and well won. Their bond was unbreakable, and everyone knew it.
Then, the day came.
National championship qualifications for the Olympic team.
Vanessa was an absolute mess of emotions and nerves. Jittery didn’t come close to describing her state of being. Every time she tried envisioning her routine, something blocked her mentally. Every stretch formed some kind of imaginary cramp in her arm or her leg.
What made it worse was that Norden was not permitted to go with her.
“Don’t worry, child,” comforted the small man as he reached over and rubbed her shoulder that he was sitting on while she buried her face into her pillows.
“How can I not worry?” said Vanessa through a mouth full of pillow, muffling her voice.
“Darling, you know I can’t hear you when you speak through layers of cloth and feathers and foam,” pointed out Norden. He jostled a bit as Vanessa turned her head to barely glimpse him out of the corner of her eye, but continued her pity party.
“Tomorrow is going to be one of the most important moments in my career and I haven’t been able to do the routine once in forever. What if I mess up? What if I break something? What if all of the other girls are better an-”
“And are better than you? Impossible,” countered Norden as he interrupted her mental spiral. The teen glanced over and caught his eyes. There was something there that felt so present and reassuring that Vanessa felt the worries melting away and salty tears sting her eyes.
“But… what if… I don’t want to do this forever? Gymnastics used to be fun all the time, and now it’s all stress and competitions,” grumbled Vanessa. The nearby clock chirped, signaling the start of a new day as midnight hit. The two of them sat there in silence for a time before the pet spoke up.
“So, what would you do with your time otherwise?” asked Norden.
“I… well… I don’t know. Never mind.”
“No, really. I want to know,” insisted Norden. Something in his voice tugged at Vanessa’s heart. It sent a pang of guilt through her and, for one reason or another, it plucked the answer from her mind and formed itself into words.
“I… I want to be a chef. I want to cook. I think it would be so much fun to open up my own café and have treats and snacks, healthy and not, and do gymnastics coaching part time. I… I don’t know… it just feels like all the fun has been zapped out of it and I’ve really been enjoying putting myself to the test with my different recipes for diets and nutrition and stuff,” mumbled Vanessa. The words spilled out of her like a whisper, each element spoken in a hushed tone like some precious secret.
It made her feel terrible. As much as she wanted this dream of hers to come true, she felt miserable at the same time. She knew that deviating from her path in gymnastics was basically a slap in the face to everyone who had ever helped her.
Her parents who moved them just so Vanessa could have better training.
Her sister who resented her for surpassing her skills.
Her colleagues and fellow students who couldn’t pull off half of the moves she could on a good day.
Dimitri for all of the time he spent coaching her after hours and before school.
Most importantly, Vanessa felt like she was betraying Norden. He had spent countless hours helping her with her routines. He coached her through micro movements and was there when she needed to talk or rant or just be comforted.
Norden was the one she was the most afraid of disappointing and saying all of this out loud hurt her; especially on the eve of a massive competition that would determine whether or not she made it to the Olympic team.
Then, something happened.
Norden scoffed and, to Vanessa’s surprise, leaned over and rubbed her shoulder again.
“Why do you sound so worried, Vanessa?” asked Norden. “Do you think I’ll be upset with you that you want to pursue your dreams? Do you think your family won’t support you?”
Vanessa buried her face into the pillows again, nodding and sniffling pitifully into her pillow. She received another sigh from the small man on her shoulder as he leaned over and tugged at a few strands of her hair to get her attention.
“Darling, I’m going to let you in on a little secret.” The words captured Vanessa’s curiosity, so she glanced over her shoulder to her companion and friend. The awkward crane in her neck prompted Norden to slide off of her shoulder and walk over toward her face so she could better see him.
“Are you listening?” he asked, to which Vanessa nodded. “Good. Remember this. Life is for living. If you are unhappy, then make yourself happy. Why would you endure something you don’t enjoy if you have the option to do something else that you will be successful in?
“You’re human. You’re a fierce, determined young woman and you can do anything you set your mind to, within reason of course. If everyone cares about you the way they profess to, they will support you. They might be upset for the moment, but they’ll see you flying and know your decision was the right one.
“Understand?” stated Norden.
She was absolutely speechless. Vanessa looked into Norden’s eyes and felt the tension tumble off of her shoulders. Relief spread through her body like the warmth of a fire on a cold day, radiating from her heart and spreading through her tingling fingertips.
Suddenly, the jitters were seemingly banished from her body. With adoration in her eyes, she looked back at her friend and sighed. “How do you always know exactly what to say?”
“Who are you talking to?” Vanessa nearly jumped to her feet as her older sister, Caroline, came into her room unannounced. “Ugg… gross… Vanessa, you need to put your pet back in his cage and get some sleep. You have a big day tomorrow and you’d better not mess it up.”
“Or else what? Perhaps if your sister’s well-being is your priority, then perhaps you should reconsider your words.” Vanessa glanced over to see Norden standing as tall as he could glaring at Caroline.
“Excuse me? What did you say you little punk?” spat Caroline.
“I said you should be more considerate of your sister,” stated Norden bluntly. “She’s about to participate in an intense competition determining her gymnastic career, she’s got a lot on her mind, and you coming in here berating her because you are jealous does not make for a flattering image. Now, apologize or leave her be. We’re in the middle of a discussion.”
Caroline seethed and glared at Norden. She even advanced a step forward and hovered over Vanessa and Norden. She looked rather menacing with the light shining behind her and forming a strong silhouette.
“How dare you! You’re nothing but a pet, and a lousy one at that. And if I’m a distraction, then so are you. So, why don’t you crawl back into your cage like a good little pet and…”
“Caroline,” interjected Vanessa as she carefully pushed herself up from her bed to not disturb Norden. “I’m… I mean… I am a bit tired. Thanks for your concern, but I…”
“My concern? You’re pathetic. That thing has more words than you do. Just get some sleep and get a muzzle for that pet of yours.” Caroline huffed and spun on her heel to get out of the room as fast as possible but made a point to slam the door as she left.
The eldest of the two took the tension with her and stomped down the hall to her room, leaving Norden and Vanessa alone once again. Vanessa could have smothered Norden in a hug she was so happy, but she refrained and simply tapped the bed beside him and nudged his leg with her index finger. He turned and smirked ever so slightly, giving him a sassy and mischievous air about him.
“Well, hopefully that put her in her place,” stated Norden. “At least for now. You don’t need unnecessary drama the night before your competition. Now, back to our conversation.
“Vanessa, you need to do what makes you happy. Don’t do it for anyone other than yourself. If you want tomorrow to be your last day competing, then so be it. It means very little, but you have my support for what it’s worth. I wish I could be there to see it, but I know I won’t need to. You will be flawless.”
Vanessa felt her throat tighten. The salty tears began stinging her eyes once again. It was all she wanted to hear.
“Thanks, Norden,” she said once she had a moment to clear her throat. Her emotions subsided, but the desire to dote on her dear friend swelled. Courage built up in her. She swallowed dryly, knowing this would be the first time she would ask Norden if she could do something like this.
She took a breath and decided to take the risk. “Um… Norden?”
“Hmm?” acknowledged the small man. He looked like he was about to retreat to the small shelf Vanessa had right by her bed where he had an entire room set up complete with a small cabin like structure, bed, and lights.
“Could… I give you a hug?” she asked quietly. Her cheeks felt hot from embarrassment. She wanted to retract the statement almost as soon as she said it, but felt her eyes widen and her jaw slacken when he responded.
“Of course,” he said thoughtfully. “Gently, mind you, but I have no qualms with it.”
It made Vanessa’s insides flip nervously, but over the moon at the same time. Vanessa’s hands trembled as she rested her hand palm up on the mattress. She sat up to better keep her balance, and Norden waited patiently for Vanessa to situate herself before stepping confidently onto her hand.
Vanessa had helped Norden around the room by carrying him before, but it was so different because she had never done this before since she and Norden had become friends. It was a trust hard earned, but now was completely unshakable.
She lifted her hand with the small man on it and pressed the edge of her hand to her chest, reaching up and resting her free palm against his back as he stepped forward and reached out his arms as wide as he could. His fingers grasped the fabric by her collar. His body relaxed at Vanessa’s touch.
Neither knew how long they were there, but when Vanessa began to pull her hand away to set Norden back down onto the ground, he gestured for her to bring her face closer. When she did, he unexpectedly did something that made Vanessa’s heart flip.
He kissed her forehead.
It was a tender gesture from a mentor to a student. It held nothing romantic. It held nothing manipulative or malicious.
It was kind.
It was paternal.
It was reassuring.
It was Norden simply being himself and aiding a friend – his only friend.
The two of them drifted off to sleep with ease and, when morning came, Norden did it again, wishing his friend all the luck in the world for the competition to come.
The entire time, Vanessa was a bundle of nerves. From the car ride to warm-ups, Vanessa could hardly sit still. Caroline was going to meet them later since she had an appointment in the morning hours before the competition. Vanessa didn’t mind. She would rather not have her sister there berating her.
It was time. Every moment had been leading up to this, and now she was finally here. Now was her time to shine. Now was her time to go out on the highest note she could.
Because whether or not she made it to the Olympics, Vanessa made her decision to follow her own dreams and passions.
So, as she stood there on the mat ready for her routine, she felt a calm sensation embrace her body. It reminded her of the subtle touch Norden gave her just the night before.
Two quick breaths. Focus. Imagine the movements. Trust your body to move.
And she did.
Vanessa flew through the air and stuck every landing. Every twist of her body was just as she had imagined it. Every flip and turn was precise and flawless.
It was just as Norden had told her.
She wished more than anything he was there to see her as she landed perfectly in front of the judges, but she knew he had already seen her go through each and every motion.
Her parents were beside themselves when she was offered a spot on the team right then and there. Caroline had a smug expression on her face, but Vanessa managed to shrug off the look.
They decided to celebrate and all of them rushed home so Vanessa could change and choose where she wanted to have dinner that night. The cars pulled into the driveway and Vanessa was practically sprinting out of the car before it even stopped to rush inside and tell Norden everything.
“Norden! Norden!” she called as she took the stairs two at a time and burst into her room looking around wildly for her friend. “I did it! It was just like you said. It was fl…”
Vanessa glanced around and saw there was no cage in the corner of her room.
There was no house on the shelf.
There was no sign Norden had ever been there.
Confusion swirled in Vanessa’s mind as she began looking under the bed and other odd places where Norden would never be. The whole time, she was calling out to him.
Nothing.
Then, there was a creak of the door behind her. Vanessa whipped around and saw her sister standing there, looming over her with a smug look on her face. Immediately, Vanessa felt her heart drop into her shoes as she stared at her sister.
“What did you do with him?” asked Vanessa as her insides twisted with unease.
“Well, since you made the team you won’t have hardly any free time left,” stated Caroline. “It isn’t fair to keep around something that you don’t have time for. You’ll need to focus on practice an-”
“Where is he!” roared Vanessa as she leapt to her feet and shoved her sister. Caroline stumbled backward and slammed against the opposite wall. Her eyes were wide with surprise at the rage from her younger sister. Then, that bitter smile tugged back onto her face.
“Gone at this point,” she said. “Vet offices are pretty quick about these things, especially with feral pets.”
Vanessa felt her heart crushing in her chest. A punch in the gut would have been kinder.
She too Norden to a vet office? Gone? Gone! She had him euthanized?!
Vanessa, with a shriek of anguish and fury, galled up her fists and punched Caroline in the nose as hard as she could before flying down the stairs.
Maybe there’s time.
Maybe I can get there before it happens! It can’t have happened yet!
Vanessa stumbled down the last few steps and grabbed her dad, shaking him.
“Dad! We have to go to the vet office. Caroline… Caroline took Norden! She took him there to be euthanized. We have t-.” Vanessa was a blubbering mess, but the look on her parents’ face told her everything.
They were in on it.
Their faces were softened with disappointment and sadness as they tried to bring her in to console her, but Vanessa wouldn’t hear of it.
Without thinking and certainly against the law, she charged out of the house and snagged her sister’s keys off of the kitchen counter. It took a fraction of a moment too late for her parents to realize what Vanessa was doing and when they made it outside to stop her, Vanessa was already driving away.
Vanessa had been studying for her learner’s permit and had been behind the wheel of a car many times to practice parallel parking and basic driving, but it was still against the law for her to drive.
She didn’t care though.
She had a mission to accomplish.
Tears spilled over her cheeks and her whole body was shaking violently. She couldn’t believe what had just happened and that her parents could be so cruel. Her sister, maybe; but them too?
Left turn. Two rights. Red light. Green light.
Vanessa sped as fast as she could and didn’t even bother to turn off the engine as she pulled into the vet’s office. Her body couldn’t move fast enough. Her heart was pounding harder and faster with each passing second.
The door clattered loudly as it slammed against a nearby chair. The vet tech at the front yelped as she looked up wildly at Vanessa.
“Ma’am, is there som-”
“My friend was brought in earlier and is scheduled to be euthanized. Please! Please! Tell me he’s okay. His name is Norden. He’s a little older. He’s about five inches tall. He’s got these piercing b…”
The look on the tech’s face went from startled to concern and then to sympathetic.
The world stopped.
Vanessa felt bile building in the back of her throat. She swallowed dryly as she saw the mortification on the tech’s face.
“I… I’m sorry. They… just took him back… The girl who came in said he was vicious and violent, biting and everything. That’s… that’s against training and protocol so…”
“What room!” shrieked Vanessa. Her legs gave out as she stumbled forward, leaning heavily on the desk.
“Room six. It’s right there.”
Vanessa ran over and threw the door open without a second thought.
As she did, she caught a glimpse of the vet removing a needle from Norden’s arm.
It was already too late.
“No!” Vanessa sobbed as she stumbled over and fell to her knees in front of the table. Her hands were shaking so violently that she couldn’t even bend her fingers. Norden’s little body had been strapped down and his chest was heaving, but his jaw and eyes were set forward; at least until he saw Vanessa.
Through her salty tears, Vanessa could see his lower lip trembling, but he still managed a smile as he looked into her eyes. There was a single tear dripping down his cheek as he looked into her eyes.
Already, his lids were getting heavy.
“Um… sweetie, you can’t be in here,” the vet started to say as the tech rushed in and began explaining the situation. The vet looked absolutely horrified as he glanced from Vanessa to the pet on the table.
“No! No no no no no no… please… you have to fix him. Please,” begged Vanessa. “I’ll do anything, just please… make it stop…”
“I… I can’t. I… I’m sorry. We were told…”
The tech quieted the vet and the two of them exchanged sympathetic glances before ushering themselves out of the room.
“Vanessa? It… it’s okay,” breathed Norden, who sounded like he was already struggling for each breath. His lids lulled again.
“No! No! No!” Vanessa sobbed. She ripped the restraints off of her friend and cradled him in her hand, keeping everything propped up so she could see him. “Please… Norden.”
Norden’s eyes lulled again. His entire body shivered as he bit back a groan of pain. The serum was obviously working quickly on him.
“Did… you…”
Vanessa choked on some mixture of a sob and a laugh. Even now, he wanted to know how her competition went.
“Yes. You were right. It was flawless.” Vanessa couldn’t stop the tears from flowing. Every breath shook her entire body.
“Shhh… it’s okay.”
“It’s not! It’s not okay. This isn’t fair!” Vanessa shuddered and pulled Norden closer. “I love you. We were supposed to have so many adventures. We were supposed to open a café together. I have a name and everything for us!”
“Oh? W-what… is… it?” breathed Norden. His breath was labored. He bit back another groan of pain as his body twitched. Norden was fighting, but it wasn’t going to be long now.
“Norden’s Nips.”
He chuckled and smirked in his classic way.
“I love it.”
The pain was too much. Vanessa felt like her heart was turning inside out. Her lungs felt hollow as did the rest of her body. She wanted to melt into a puddle. Anything would be easier than this.
Anything would be better than good-bye.
“Vanessa… Nessie… Listen to me…” said Norden. His breath came in little panicked whisps. Vanessa looked into his eyes and saw his pupils were starting to dilate.
“I’m here… I’m listening. Norden, please! Don’t go…”
“Please… for me… live. Live for me. Live the way you want. Be happy. Don’t take moments for granted. I… I’m so… happy… to have… known you….”
He winced as, with his hand, he tried to raise his hand in his signature salute. Vanessa choked on another sob as she reached over and helped him raise his arm. A smile of gratitude crossed his face as, with her help, he completed the motion.
He gestured once again for her to come closer and his kissed her once more on her forehead.
She barely caught the words escaping his lips as she pulled him away.
“I love you, Nessie.”
The light in his eyes faded. His pupils dilated. There was a momentary shudder as he smiled and closed his eyes for the last time.
Vanessa collapsed into sobs and slunk to the floor clutching Norden to her chest. She wasn’t sure how long she was there, but she didn’t care. Despair consumed her and it wasn’t until both the police and her family arrived that Vanessa registered anything other than the weight of Norden’s lifeless body in her hands.
Right then and there, she cursed her family.
She denounced them and swore she would never speak to them again. Vanessa declared she would never do gymnastics again and that her passions were elsewhere.
The following days of chaos turned to havoc and loathing for months and years until the day Vanessa turned eighteen and moved out, never to contact her family again.
~~~^*^*^~~~
“Sweetie! I am so so so so sorry. You never said anything about this. So… that’s how you started your business? Or, rather, why?” asked Jody. Vanessa nodded numbly as she looked at her friend.
“Yeah,” she mumbled.
“So, Norden’s Nips was for your pe-… er… friend?”
“Yep.” Vanessa wiped away the tears from her eyes and stared at her friend. “And it’s not something I share. I’ve told maybe one other person about this, and they laughed that I would name a business after a pet. We don’t talk anymore.”
“Yeah, but if I had known I wouldn’t have… oh gosh… I… Ohh…. I’m so mad right now. I’m going to message your sister and give her a piece of my mind!”
Vanessa didn’t have time to stop Jody as she stormed out with her phone. Vanessa knew there was no stopping her friend and, instead, she stayed huddled under her blankets and stared at her now cold drink on the table.
Then, she heard something.
In a sniffly voice, she heard the female pet from the cage say, “I… I’m sorry… but… please… please don’t take me back. I… know I’m not going to be like your friend… but…”
Vanessa sighed and pushed herself up off of the couch and walked over to the cage, kneeling in front of the door to better look at the pet. She was beautiful and obviously had an empathetic soul based on the tears dripping down her own face.
“No, I’m sorry. I… It’s been a while since I’ve faced those feelings. I… well… you don’t have to be scared. Not of me,” said Vanessa.
Immediately, the pet looked up and started breathing quickly, nerves obviously getting the better of her.
“Please, I’ll be the best pet I can. Just…”
“I don’t want a pet,” stated Vanessa. “But I wouldn’t mind a new friend. How about it?”
The look on her face said it all. Things were going to be different around here from now on, but Vanessa didn’t mind. Change was good. And sometimes, someone is worth the heartbreak.
Norden was one of those people.
As was Jody and some of her other friends.
This new friend would certainly make that list as well.
~~~~~^*^*^*^*^~~~~~
Thank you. Apologies…
Cheers and, as always, stay awesome!

PROPAGANDA:
Palamedes Sextus- You'd have Palamedes and Camilla solving the mysteries of Canaan House and tracking down the murderer, you've got his emotional turmoil at being rejected by the love of his life, you have his sheer bafflement at his good friend Protesilaus taking up a vow of silence and repeatedly attacking this other huge, silent weirdo who showed up. It would also be the best detective novel ending, in that he'd give his solution speech about who the culprit was and how they did it, then immediately explodes. Book over.
Descole- He's the antagonist of the prequel trilogy of games and often helps add to the mysteries to solve. I would love to see his perspective of all he did throughout those games.
Garrus Vakarian- None submitted
Eli 'Weevil' Navarro- Francis Capra is a fantastic and immensely underrated actor and he deserves his own show. Weevil is truly the best character and the under-utilised potential of the parts of his life that should have been relevant and weren't will haunt me until I die (worse because he was a major character/series regular). Please, I am begging you, force Rob Thomas to put his money where his mouth is in actually reckoning with the class (+race) inequality the show is always nominally condemning and then reinforcing every time they give racist millionaire characters a giant narrative spotlight and a seventeenth chance instead of paying attention to their POC regulars with so much more potential
Vee- There is just so much potential! It could be a cute cartoon about an awkward little shapeshifter trying to behave like a human. From time to time, a backstory episode about her past as a basilisk and her escape out of the Boiling Isles. Their closest friend is Masha, who slowly discovers their secret, and becomes their confident, like MoringMark Comics from 2022-10-20. (And of course, romance). With the return of Luz in the the human realm, it could be more psychological, exploring complex feeling toward her (envy, but also affection). But yeah, imagine a cute slice-of-life cartoon with the cutest character of the show! Completely in the mood found family, "weirdos staying together" and "being understood"!
