Zetan Research: The Brotherhood of Steel Edition...
Brotherhood of Steel
Recovery & Containment
Salvage teams under Elder Lyons and Elder Maxson have routinely secured downed Zetan drones and ordered them to Fort Hagen and later the Lost Hills bunker for analysis. Nexus Mods Forums
Applied Research
The Brotherhood’s Tech-Relic division has reverse-engineered Zetan energy shields and attempted integration into prototype power armor (e.g., experimental PA II variants). However, most alien specimens are locked away, deemed too unstable for wide deployment. Nexus Mods Forums

Applied Research
What is Applied Research?
Applied research is helping local and regional enterprises adapt new technologies and develop new and improved products and processes that enable them to be competitive in today’s global marketplace. We also help small and medium enterprises (SME’s) to identify funding opportunities to support research and development activities and provide advice relating to intellectual property protection and commercialization.
How does it work?
A local business partner that has a problem or a need, most times this is a technical issue will comes to us. Instead of hiring a contractor, they contribute a portion of the cost of the project, the rest is usually funded by government grants. We have a professor who has a class that can research the problem and come up with a solution, they will then take the semester and work on that resolution and hopefully solve the problem. At the end they demonstrate their solution or what they have learned through this project.
Everyone wins with these projects!
The business partner gets expert help from our professor (who has years of experience), students with diverse backgrounds and our leading up coming professionals, they get real life experience that they get to put on their resumes, and networking with a business.
Taking knowledge and applying it!

Still extremely happy about this! Now, half a year later, I am working on applications of this new target for clinical use. Some new exciting research results are coming!
We found a new antibiotic target in bacteria!!
It took almost 4 years, but the fruits of my postdoc research are finally here! In our paper (with me as the first author), just published in Nature Communications, we decipher a working mechanism of an antibiotic that targets the membrane of bacteria in an unprecedented way!
enhanced PDF: https://rdcu.be/dgj2d web version: https://lnkd.in/eRpxr4jg
And how does it work?
The antibiotic AMC-109 first self-assembles into stable aggregates with a cationic surface. These aggregates then specifically target bacteria cells and insert into their membrane.
You can see the process how we simulated it in a computer on the figure below. Grey-Blue is the antibiotic, Red-Yellow are lipids that together form a membrane.
@jmelcr did this awesome simulation work! You are an amazing scientist, jmelcr! I love you and it seems our collaboration did not ruin our marriage. Not yet, anyway 😄.
After insertion into the bacterial membrane, the antibiotic dissolves membrane nanodomains affecting membrane function without formation of any pores or holes in the membrane.
Below is the series of high-speed atomic force microscopy images that shows the process of dissolution of membrane nanodomains. Yellow are the membranes extracted from bacteria laying flat on a hard surface (black). The membranes contain nanodomains (bright yellow) that are important in living bacteria for its survival. Addition of antibiotic dissolves them.
More studies will follow that use this new target in bacteria giving us an advantage over untreatable superbugs. I will keep you posted. And... keep your fingers crossed. It's research after all, so we never know if and how well it's going to work.

ok i feel like the wording of this is gonna be so bad bcs i'm currently walking whilst writing this post & i've also only had one coffee but. (oh & also i should clarify that i am white)
i'm all for hc'ing a characters race and/or ethnicity, i mean i do it myself all the time, but it feels very empty to do so blindly & just sorta seems similar to the kinda ppl that 'don't see race'. by this i just mean like something very common i see in this fandom. hc'ing a white character to be a different race -> proceeding to seemingly not think/talk about how that would then impact the character, their relations with others, & generally in the story & rather just hc'ing it & proceeding to then only rlly talk about it through blatant stereotypes (this also is common in this fandom for hcs for ethnicity, sexuality, etc). if someone is a certain race, they will experience life differently to someone of a different race. i'm not just saying here like "oh if you hc james as indian then he'd be the one getting bullied in 70s england" or something. like, that's not what i'm saying, its that im aware there's a lot more nuance to that. im saying race impacts people's lives and ignoring how you're changing this character is, in my opinion, ignorant. i'm not saying 'keep all the white characters white', ofc not, just if you are hc'ing a character to be a diff race then maybe put more thought behind why you hc it & how this would impact them. and that applies to not just hcs for race but many things. otherwise you are very likely doomed to repeat harmful stereotypes
#& this honestly doesn't just apply to hcs for this fandom but just. creating characters in general#do research when creating characters.#fandom critical

how do you come up with the ways cultures in your setting stylize people/animals/the world in general in their artwork, i.e. jewlery, rock carvings, statues, etc? Each culture in your world seems to have a very unique "art style" and I love it a lot - makes them seem that much more 'real'. This is something I struggle with a lot in my own worldbuilding and I'd love to pick your brain if possible 😁
I think a starting point is to have a research process based in the material realities of the culture you're designing for. Ask yourself questions like:
Where do they live? What's the climate/ecosystem(s) they are based in? What geographic features are present/absent?
What is their main subsistence method? (hunter gatherer, seasonal pastoralist, nomadic pastoralist, settled agriculturalist, a mix, etc)
What access to broader trade networks do they have and to whom? Are there foreign materials that will be easily accessible in trade and common in use, or valuable trade materials used sparingly in limited capacities?
Etc
And then do some research based on the answers, in order to get a sense of what materials they would have routine access to (ie dyes, metal, textiles, etc) and other possible variables that would shape how the art is made and what it's used for. This is just a foundational step and won't likely play much into designing a Style.
If you narrow these questions down very specifically, (ie in the context of the Korya post- grassland based mounted nomads, pastoralist and hunter-gatherer subsistence, access to wider trade networks and metals), you can direct your research to specific real world instances that fit this general idea. This is not to lift culturally specific concepts from the real world and slap them into your own setting, but to notice commonalities this lifestyle enforces - (ie in the previous example- mounted nomadic peoples are highly mobile and need to easily carry their wealth (often on clothing and tack) therefore small, elaborate decorative artwork that can easily be carried from place to place is a very likely feature)
For the details of the art itself, I come up with loose 'style guides' (usually just in my head) and go from there.
Here's some example questions for forming a style (some are more baseline than others)
Are geometric patterns favored? Organic patterns? Representative patterns (flowers, animals, stars, etc)? Abstract patterns?
Is there favored material(s)? Beads, bone, clay, metals, stones, etc.
When depicting people/animals, is realism favored? Heavy stylization? The emotional impression of an animal? Are key features accentuated?
How perspective typically executed? Does art attempt to capture 3d depth? Does it favor showing the whole body in 2 dimensions (ie much of Ancient Egyptian art, with the body shown in a mix of profile and forward facing perspective so all key attributes are shown)? Will limbs overlap? Are bodies shown static? In motion?
Does artwork of people attempt to beautify them? Does it favor the culture's conception of the ideal body?
Are there common visual motifs? Important symbols? Key subject matters?
What is the art used for? Are its functions aesthetic, tutelary, spiritual, magical? (Will often exist in combination, or have different examples for each purpose)
Who is represented? Is there interest in everyday people? Does art focus on glorifying warriors, heroes, kings?
Are there conventions for representing important figures? (IE gods/kings/etc being depicted larger than culturally lesser subjects)
Is there visual shorthand to depict objects/concepts that are difficult to execute with clarity (the sun, moon, water), or are invisible (wind, the soul), or have no physical component (speech)?
Etc
Deciding on answers to any of these questions will at least give you a unique baseline, and you can fill in the rest of the gaps and specify a style further until it is distinct. Many of these questions are not mutually exclusive, both in the sense of elements being combined (patterns with both geometric and organic elements) or a culture having multiple visual styles (3d art objects having unique features, religious artwork having its own conventions, etc).
Also when you're getting in depth, you should have cultural syncretism in mind. Cultures that routinely interact (whether this interaction is exchange or exploitation) inevitably exchange ideas, which can be especially visible in art. Doing research on how this synthesizing of ideas works in practice is very helpful- what is adopted or left out from an external influence, what is retained from an internal influence, what is unique to this synthesis, AND WHY. (I find Greco-Buddhist art really interesting, that's one of many such examples)
Looking at real world examples that fit your parameters can be helpful (ie if I've decided on geometric patterns in my 'style guide', I'll look at actual geometric patterns). And I strongly encourage trying to actually LEARN about what you're seeing. All art exists in a context, and having an understanding of how the context shapes art, how art does and doesn't relate to broader aspects of a society, etc, can help you when synthesizing your own.
#I have a solid baseline because I like learning about history so don't do this like. Full research process every time. It's just the gist#of what the core process is.#I think I've gotten a similar question about clothing in the past that I never answered (sorry) so yeah this applies to that as well#Though that involves a heavier preliminary research end (given there are substantially more practical concerns that shape the#making of clothing- material sources they have access to (plant textile? wool? hide? etc). The clothing's protective purpose (does#it need to protect from the sun? wind? mild cold? extreme cold?). Etc#Also involves establishing like. Beauty conventions. Gendered norms of dress. Modesty conventions. Etc#I think learning about the real world and different cultures across history is like. The absolute most important thing for good#worldbuilding. And this means LEARNING learning. Having the curiosity to learn the absolute myriad of Things People Do#and Why We Do Them and how we relate to shared aspects of our world. The commonalities and differences. I think this is like...#Foundational to having the ability to synthesize your own rather than just like. copy-pasting concepts at random

coming off the high of finishing the draft of the last of my exegetical/theory heavy chapters of my thesis and while i was writing i was thinking a lot about why applying real world political philosophies to exandria specifically tends to fall flat and like. even beyond the explicit treatment of things like homophobia as nonexistent and hegemony functioning wildly differently if it really actually exists in exandria as we conceptualize it in our actual world really boils down to the works that make up a lot of the roots of the leftist theory people apply to exandria. like obviously marx is a big guy, nietzsche has more influence than you’d think given his reputation as the internets (poorly interpreted) sad boy, and less people probably know the names of the critical theorists that came out of the frankfurt school but you’d know their ideas — and they all have their toes in countless leftist ideas today, whether their influence is explicit or not. what’s notable in all those theorists is something found in the argumentative and background work that they provide before the claims most people on the internet know re: the workers of the world uniting, god’s being dead, and the culture industry, whether in their previous work or just earlier in the same books that people have read the goodreads quotes of: first principles.
if you’re unfamiliar with the term, it’s just a philosophy word for basic proposition that cannot be deduced from a previous claim. And for a whole lot of works in the history of moral and political philosophy (as well as other less relevant branches), one of the most common first principles you could find was the proposition that god exists. so much of the work of philosophers who inform leftist theory has required them to do the work of either coming up with a different first principle and justifying it and/or providing justification for why first principles are in themselves a flawed notion. nietzsche was so impactful in his claim that god is dead because it targets the very notion that history and the philosophy in it was finding the proposition that god exists to be unsatisfactory if unsupported. marx then was only able to ground his historical materialism because that first principle re: god was able to be dismantled. critical theorists, like adorno for example, were only able to do their work in light of accepting that god is not something worth appealing to without justification. and the reason any of this is relevant to the fantasy world of a silly internet show where voice actors roll dice is because any leftist theory whose most foundational basis is the realization and gradual societal acceptance that the claim “god is real” could not be assumed but had to be given justification will always end up being unsatisfactory when it is applied to a world where “god is real” is not only factually true but is also societally accepted and the existence of those who might philosophize about the gods is a direct product of those gods’ existence.
this isn’t to say there can’t be insight granted by applying these theories anyway (looking at my blorbos and applying philosophical theories is my favourite hobby, just ask my thesis supervisor) nor is it to say that the risks of trying to apply these theories to exandria starts and ends with its failing to be philosophically apt — but there have been many great posts circulating re: the issues with viewing certain facets of exandria through an “it’s a colonialist metaphor” lens and many similar cases so i won’t dive in here. just pointing out that as a facet of the objective truth that can exist in a fictional world, especially a world established by gods (world here being a word that includes the existence of mortals), some of the foundational propositions of the philosophical arguments at work in those theories are rendered false in the exandrian context. but this also means that, if the gods leave exandria in some sense, i will have a very fun time unpacking a nietzschean interpretation of their absence. because i predict that though the gods will be dead/gone, his meaning of god being dead will Not be fulfilled since ostensibly the majority of exandria still looks to the gods in love and in doubt as providers of guidance, and i question how much their presence actually informs the depth of that dependence. anyway. that’s my philosophical enrichment for the night.
#a tumblr post can be a grad student applying their research interests (which are useful no where else) to the blorbo show#sometimes i think about the fact that the twilight movies made fun of studying philosophy and just suffer#because they were right and also if TWILIGHT makes fun of u. question your choices#regardless. thoughts be upon you. i mentioned sartrean bad faith in a bells hells post a little while ago#and that was me soft launching making rotted philosophy posts. as i finish more of my thesis i’ll hard launch more#now that my brain slowly becomes less and less Trapped#alas#critical role#exandria#exandrian pantheon#cr3

Been reading a lot of posts being like "how could any of them forget the truth of what happened in the wilderness like that?" - so once again I'm gonna offer my two cents as someone with a dissociative disorder ✌️
First off you need to understand there are not one, but two defining traumatic events for the surviving Yellowjackets:
Crashing and Surviving in the Wilderness.
Coming home and the Tabloid Frenzy.
Since we have only seen the wilderness part so far, it's easy to forget that coming home, readjusting while also under scrutiny of the entire world through the tabloids would have been equally as traumatising to their brains.
There is also no real end point to the latter event. It's something that follows them for the entirety of their lives. We see it most evidently with Tai because of her run for senator, but it's still an active, persisting trauma that all the girls are forced to band together to try and get through. Their lives are ruled by keeping up the collective narrative they've created, ruled by the fear of the truth coming out.
In terms of a trauma event perspective, the wilderness has a defined start and end - the moment they crash to the moment they are rescued.
Now onto the dissociation from their trauma.
To understand the fundamental core of dissociation, you need to get your head around the idea that dissociation is a tool the brain uses to protect itself / a person. Dissociation itself is not inherently bad, in fact it is utilised by trained therapist to help with things like PTSD (e.g EMDR Therapy which is used to severe the link between emotions and memories).
What makes someone have a dissociative disorder is the inability to control what they dissociate from.
In the case with all the survivors - minus Tai bc her dissociation is a lot more complex because of other Tai - they are suffering from Selective Amnesia, which is when a person can recall only small parts of events that took place in a defined period of time.
People who develop dissociative amnesia often will not even realise that they have gaps in their memory, and as with most dissociative disorders, it will affect your ability to sense and process emotions attached to those memories.
Personal example - I have no emotional link to anything that happened before the age of 14 due to dissociation. My memories are like a series of photographs that someone else took, I can look at them and see the events but feel nothing.
So with the yellowjackets, not only are they suppressing the worst of the memories but also the worst / complexities of the emotions attached to those memories. So the girls might know they were afraid of Shauna, but not the specifics as to why nor still feel that fear at all for her.
Now, I'm going back to the two traumatic events. Like I said earlier, dissociation is the brains way of protecting its owner. It would have found itself with two things it classified as dangerous, and that their person needed to be protected from. One with a defined start and end and another that is ongoing. It can't suppress or forget the memories related to returning home and the tabloids because that would put their person in more danger because that is a continuous issue, still ongoing. While with the wilderness, that's over. They're not in that situation anymore. It's also impacting their ability to deal with the second trauma. So, of course, the brain would choose to suppress the memories of the wilderness, thinking that was for the best.
Obviously each member of the Yellowjackets would vary in how successful their dissociation would be.
Nat, I would say, is the least affected, her life and being entirely ruled by the horrors of what they had done. Her dissociation wasn't particularly strong, so she was forced to have sex, do drugs etc to cover what the dissociation didn't do.
On the other side of the scale - those with existing mental health illnesses like Lottie, Shauna and Tai seem to have had the most successfully suppressed, which makes sense as dissociation is often a symtom of many mental illnesses along with being it's own disorder.
People who are confused as to how you can get from S3 teen Shauna to S1 adult Shauna, the answer is most likely dissociation amnesia combined with the trauma that came from going home.
By the end of S3, every single surviving member of the team has regained partial to all of the truth of the memories they suppressed, which is very much possible. Shauna has partially uncovered it, but only the version that fits the established narrative of her postpartum psychosis, while Misty and Tai have regained all of their memories and no longer are dealing with altered or fuzzy versions of them.
#once again thank you for comming to my ted talk#ive done so much research into my disorder after being diagnosed 10+ years ago so always cool when I can apply it to stuff#yellowjackets#natalie scatorccio#shauna shipman#taissa turner#misty quigley#shio speaks#van palmer

what's fun about shipping Tim with Dick, Jason, or Damian is he has, at some point, hallucinated all of them to comfort himself. even when he doesn't like them or particularly get along with them, he has to imagine/hallucinate them just so he has the power to go on. Tim's concepts of the Robin mantle and what it should be is so fun, because he respects the others through the Robin mantle. Tim worships Dick because he was the first Robin. he wouldn't be Robin if Jason hadn't died in the mantle. and a lot of his frustration with Damian is he feels Damian isn't honoring the mantle correctly. when you ship Tim with the other Robins you can't divorce their identities as Robin from it because Tim will always see them as a Robin first and that's so fun and fucked up. like.
batman (1940) #456
Tim perceiving Dick as *Robin* cheering him on, not Nightwing, which is the version of Dick that Tim actually knows? that's just. wild of him. he will always view Dick as Robin first, his personal hero but also the original of the legacy. his love for Dick is shaped by that.
and then of course, even when he's hallucinating/imagining Jason cheering him on, it's *still* through the lense of being reminded how Jason failed? subconsciously believing that Jason got himself killed because of his actions, and that being a lesson for Tim to learn from? Jason isn't a person to Tim, he's a moral lesson about how to be Robin. any potential idolization he could have of Jason isn't because he loves Jason, it's because of the lessons Jason's death taught him.
and then, even though him hallucinating TIm is from the New-52, which makes characterization all kinds of questionable, i do think it makes sense for TIm to hallucinate/imagine Damian after Damian's death in an attempt to cope with it.
teen titans (2011) #18
to an extend, he sees Damian's death as in part his own fault. and even hating Damian, Tim needs the comfort from this to cope with Damian being gone. he's angry that Damian even was Robin, and has to learn something from Damian's death and how it impacts the Robin mantle, and teenage heroes as a whole. like, Tim can pretend he hates Damian all he wants, even getting taunted by the image of Damian, but there's still an underlying love to their relationship.
i think that's just the fun of shipping Tim with any of them. you will never divorce Tim's views of them from the Robin mantle and how fucking Unwell he is about anyone else who's been Robin before or after him, to the point he has to hallucinate them comforting him when he's at his lowest. it's always going to be a little unhealthy, a little toxic, and driven by Tim's relationship with being Robin as well. i need more Tim being weird about Robin in these ships.
#necrotic festerings#batcest#jaytim#dicktim#damitim#this post was first going to just be about tim hallucinating damian but i got carried away thinking about the identity crisis arc#have whatever this is.#idk if there's much of a thesis other than “tim's fucking weird about the robin mantle and that should extend to shipping too”#been meaning to post this for forever#finally got around to it though so yay me.#now i need to go work on my jaytim in the new-52 thoughts bc. i have a whole post planned.#a stack of comics next to me for research and everything. god help me.#ALSO while rereading to grab panels#why is it that everyone talks about how jason says “robin is magic” in an attempt to mischaracterize him as sunshine boy#and not the fact that tim *also* says robin is magic?#like it's not a jason thing. it's a robin mantle thing.#that's just what robin *is*. it doesn't say much about jason's character for him to say that when he's robin. it just means he's robin.#the robin mantle is magic. that's the point.#and you could argue that's more of a meta thing that exists on the wavelength of how children where supposed to project onto robin#moreso than an in-universe commentary on what the robin mantle is#(honestly the same argument applies to tim hallucinating here for like. meta intent vs in-universe meaning.)#i hesitate to even call it hallucination it's more like. daydreaming coping.#giving a face to his internal monologue type thing and this is just how the medium depicts it#also it was just sexy and cool for characters to hallucinate loved ones in the 90s in comics. it was a convention of the genre.#but still my point stands. tim pictures all of these ppl as robin first internally#and he self soothes using their image in his head. that's wild of him like what#tim you are weird about the robin mantle more than anyone else i give you that.

AI Machine Learning (ML) vs. Deep Learning (DL)
You may have heard of these buzz words machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL), but what does it really mean?

ML is a subset of artificial intelligence that focuses on developing algorithms that allow machines to learn from and make decisions based on that data. It can be supervised, unsupervised and reinforced learning. You can find this in applications such as spam detection, predictive analytics and fraud detection.
DL is a subset of ML that uses neural networks with many layers to model complex patterns in large datasets. This has been inspired by the structure and function of the human brain. This is useful for handling large amounts of unstructured data and excels in tasks like image and speech recognition. You can find this in applications such as autonomous vehicles, natural language processing, image and voice recognition.
Some leading businesses that top the charts in ML and DL include:
IBM
Microsoft
Amazon Web Services
Dataiku
Databricks
H20.ai
SAS
DataRobot, Inc.
Nvidia
OpenAI
Apple
Google
I would suggest learning as much as you can about it!

i will say. I do really get how dream has such a devoted follower base. with his stream and video he presented all the information in a way to make the view sympathetic towards him and make himself seem like the good guy. if someone were to only watch those and do none of their own digging or basic fucking research then I get how they would draw the conclusions they do and form the opinions they hold.
that being said why the fuck would you not do your own research and instead trust the word of the guy literally EVERYONE is against
#dream situation#<-for those who have it blocked#genuinely watching either of tubbos streams makes it so blatantly obvious what dream is doing#idk this is just#it feels like there are a lot of principles and red flags here to be ! applied to bigger situations !#and I know that thats a wild sentence to say about minecraft youtuber drama but like#it's a good fucking lesson in how not doing your own research/hearing the other side out/or even just. blindly trusting one source leads to#stuff like ! the fucking blind devotion a lot of dreams viewer base has#idk#it's a good lesson in propaganda
