A status I posted on Facebook one evening several months before SummerFest, when I was already madly in love with Liv, serves as evidence of the depth of my self-loathing and confusion. I wrote: 'Those of us who are gay and for Jesus' sake are staying celibate are the heroes of our generation.'

At the time, my church and the Sydney Uni Christian group were both conducting talk series about Christian views on homosexuality. The way I saw it, I was merely contributing a point of view to the broader discussion – and I wasn't referring to myself in the status, but to my homosexual brothers and sisters in Christ (hence 'us'). At least that's how I explained it to my minister when he called me within 20 minutes of the status going up to see if I was okay, such was the rage I'd incited online.
