one of the things that I found particularly interesting in Demigods of Olympus is that it finally gives the best direct comparison we've seen so far between Percy and another character's experiences in terms of academics and particularly ableist discrimination.
The way Zane describes his experiences and what we see in his POV is that, while he is similarly discriminated against for his "atypical" behavior and blame is placed on him, the only sorts of punishments he receives for this are relatively benign, such as an increase in counseling. (It is also notable that Zane is somewhat autistic-coded, such as having the "incorrect" scripts when speaking with adults and Sam explicitly reminding him to remember to make proper eye contact.) Percy, on the other hand, similarly experiences discrimination for "atypical" behavior, but whereas Zane is treated as "too smart for his own good" and given slaps on the wrist, Percy is automatically labeled as aggressive, destructive, and a trouble-maker based on preconceived assumptions about him and is more severely punished, such as being frequently expelled.
We rarely get this level of direct comparison between Percy's experiences and that of another character, particularly such similar experiences, so looking at the differences is really interesting to gauge what their different experiences with ableist discrimination is like - and how it could potentially tie into intersectionality and other forms of discrimination at play for them.
For instance, Zane's parents are generally heavily implied to be middle-class and/or generally financially secure, versus Percy who grew up poor, so it could be classism in combination with ableist discrimination. Alternatively, it could be intersectionality with racial discrimination, as neurodivergent behavior in people of color is significantly more likely to be punished more severely and labeled as aggressive or disruptive behavior due to racist preconceptions - particularly since we know Percy's experiences with ableist discrimination are also somewhat based on assumptions people make regarding his appearance. Both Zane and Percy are racially ambiguous - Zane's appearance essentially being completely unspecified, but Percy at least having some notable details such as having a deep tan complexion. If not racism, it could also be colorism, which in this context often has similar intersectionality. There's a lot of potential options.
It's just very interesting to me! I love having such a direct point of comparison to examine the experiences of two characters within.
#pjo#demigods of olympus#riordanverse#percy jackson#zane carver#analysis#disability#adhd#one of my biggest gripes with analysis that i see often in the fandom is people erasing Percy's experiences with ableism#particularly academically and instead electing to frame his experiences as ''only possibly being from [x] - there's no other explanation''#which is really sad to me because it just highlights how little people understand what ableism and ableist discrimination look like#and simply seem unable to process our experiences and stories meant to reflect our experiences#so having another frame of reference to compare Percy's experiences against is REALLY nice and particularly fun for me personally#because it gives an opportunity to highlight both the general disabled experiences Percy faces due to his adhd/dyslexia#but also how that potentially ties in to intersectionality with other demographics he's a part of or may be a part of#because now we have a point of comparison between how two disabled characters are experiencing similar discrimination for the same thing#but there *are* differences between them in specific ways that potentially indicate something occurring in addition to just ableism#which is fascinating! and allows those discussions in the context of intersectionality WITHOUT erasing disabled experiences! yippee!!!#anyways this is mostly off the noggin since ive just been rotating the thought for a couple of days#chewing on this chewing on it chewing on it

Just wanted to say I really like how you write Splinter. It feels very authentic as someone with a home life like that so I find your fics vry cathartic :)
thank you! ;~; i have very complicated feelings on splinter because i admit that the "good/bad parent splinter" tags kind of annoy me sometimes just a little... because i think splinter is a parent they all love and cherish and adore and they end up with good relationships with him from what's shown, but we also must not undermine it. splinter was a neglectful parent, and neglect is abuse, and that is extremely noticeable in the way that they all act. but it also wasn't his fault for being mentally ill and... i suppose the whole transformation feels like a metaphor for physical disability? ive always seen it as something kind of like chronic illness.
splinter's a victim of circumstance and he is not fully responsible for the position he put them in. the sad reality is that the closest equivalent is living a life in poverty, and the kind of situations raph and donnie were put in can happen to kids even with attentive, considerate and healthy parents. but this doesn't mean poor, or disabled, or mentally ill people shouldn't be having children. that is a eugenicist narrative that would also predominantly be applied to and enforced on people of color. the problem lies in the lack of resources and capitalism as a whole. i feel like making him unambiguously abusive because he's malicious and hates his kids can be kind of a cop-out, although it depends on the story you want to tell.
i do think accountability is something i want to hit splinter with and the show does try to do it to at least some extent-- but also it's a comedy first and foremost. some of splinter's neglect is played up for goofs and gaffes so i feel like taking gags to show that he's secretly an abuser (whatever the hell the end of lair games was, or him whacking them with his tail, for example) is kind of disingenuous lmao. rise plays up very real problems for the sake of comedic effect, and i like that there's some underlying things to pick at in-between the lines that makes the characters feel so alive. i feel like it's what fanfic's for.
but also i understand why people DONT like splinter. there are some parts of his characterization, especially his design, that are very racist. i just hate when people make his depiction even more racist when they make him evil. i also dont like the fatphobia in the show idk. the biggest reason i havent drawn him is because i would want to redesign him, but i cant really fix the weird racist undertones without making him anything but a rat i fear.
#ask#its always morally correct to hate your shitty dad tho btw. to anyone reading this#i understand splinter is not young palatable and cute like the turtles are so a lot of people dont care enough but i do... I DOOOO.#ive seen some stories about splinter being shittier than i write him that actually approach it with a lot of nuance#i support going down dark paths for characters if youre gonna really take them into consideration first#i have a parent a lot like splinter that failed me really badly but they're also like. my mommyyyyy my mommmmmmyyyyyyyy#i have mommy issues. but i also have a very good relationship with them now. they're so kind and supportive#it was just a learning process. and they're very disabled and mentally ill. i understand why they were the way that they were#i went on about demonization but i also find it kind of sad when people make him unambiguously good too#less fun to be had. although i understand not addressing it when there's a completely different story to be told#the influence of splinter's neglect hangs so heavy over them all that it appears in literally everything i write#especially because i write a lot of . donnie. lawl. you have to talk about splinter to get to the root of donnie's issues#raph's too

really bad sonic take that i still remember every once in a while because of how outrageously awful and out of character it was is that sonic would be ableist and mock people with mobility issues for being slower than him . he would NOTTTTTTT fucking say that
#honestly the idea that sonic would randomly make fun of people for being slower than him is already weird#because from what i remember he only really pokes fun at people's speed if theyre a rival of his who claimed to be faster first#and even in that context its not usually in a mean-spirited way on sonic's part#when it comes to everyone else he doesnt care hes literally been shown to slow down a bit so his friends can keep up with him more easily#and hes made comments about how its okay that not everyone is a super fast runner or a good fighter or whatever#but bringing disability into it and saying hed be mean to disabled people for being slow is extra weird#because hes literally been shown to be completely normal about disabled people#and not have a habit of mocking them or treating them as lesser or anything#(examples being the episode of sonic x where he takes helen on an adventure#and also arguably his entire relationship with tails counts too. like maybe some wouldnt consider an extra tail to be a disability but#having a part of your body that works differently from everyone else's in a way thats considered not normal and being bullied for it#sounds pretty disabled to me)#people will not know a thing about sonic and just go online and say whatever#also sonic is actually disabled himself didnt you know . my source is that im disabled and i like him

I'm falling back into X-men: First Class stuff again thanks to the Deadpool x Wolverine movie and I had kind of forgotten how much I love the very specific dynamic of the Erik x Charles relationship where I watch Erik do some borderline supervillain stuff going "fuck yeah! Good for you!" and then watch Charles ream into Erik calling him out for said behaviour and/or the shit Erik has done to him personally going "fuck yeah! Good for you!"
Original X-men movie dynamics is much more the (normal) dynamic of wanting them to set aside their differences and find a way to progress their cause together. But First Class is all about the anger behind their actions being completely justified but also oh so very entertainingly messy.
#Xmen#cherik#charles xavier#erik lehnsherr#Xmen First Class#charles x erik#Ramblings of the Goddess#A lot of opposing-politics-ships have the dynamic#of both sides being petty and yelly at each other#and that is so fun#but the shit Erik has (intentionally or not) done to Charles personally#is so much more imbalanced to what Charles has done to him personally#that Charles really can do the bulk of the yelling there#but Erik is also out there being a supervillain for mostly valid reasons#Which I realise is probably why I like Vander-Silco from Arcane some much#except their opposites#Because Silco is using passive-aggressive coments on the fact Vander permanently disabled him#as reasons for why Vander should let him go on his crusade of vengence#and meanwhile Charles is using passive-aggressive comments on the fact Erik permanently disabled him#as reasons for why Erik should stop on his crusade of vengence

Things I've started noticing in media as someone who recently developed a not yet diagnosed chronic pain disorder that has fucked up my life.
- seeing rep for any. Any. Disability makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside.
- in fandom, every time I see another disabled person discuss a disabled character, they actually like analysing the character in terms of how they function with their disability. But I only ever see ablebodied people make aus in which "everything is fine".
- seeing arguments about what is and isn't good representation is extremely draining. This goes for any minority, many of which I'm part of. It's an important conversation to have, but so often the focus is on tearing down the character instead of building them back up yourself. The approach is too focused on rooting out the bad apples, not on planting the seeds for better ones.
So often I see complaints, and those complaints are entirely valid. I agree with most of them. But wouldn't it be more productive to point out what was done right and suggest what could've been done to make it even better? If there's one thing school taught me, it's that constant criticism just leads to resentment.
Make up ocs with disabilities, draw them as well as you can or commission someone to draw them for you and post that shit with a detailed explanation. Someone is bound to see it. Write fanfiction of your favourite character and go in depth on the struggles they face and how they still find happiness alongside those struggles. Make videos or write books or animate something and include your story there, because that won't make you miserable. Force people to see you for who you are. It's far more effective than getting into arguments online.
#this goes for everything tbh#being miserable won't help anyone#be an example for others to follow#even if it's just a small one#hell even the silly headcanon pages people make raise some level of awareness#yes pointing out flaws is important but I think showing the path to improvement is more effective and more wholesome#and please stop writing fics where the character's disability is magically cured. if you don't know how to write it then ask for help#treat it as an exercise in creativity#even the bare minimum research is better than erasure#this is targeted#primarily at the arcane fandom#the amount of post canon jayvik fics I see where both of their legs are magically healed pisses me off#I promise you'll have more fun writing something new than rehashing the same old ablebodied story#disability#disability inclusion#disability in media#fandom#writing#creative writing#writing disabled characters#if anyone has recs for media with fun disabled characters please tell me#viktor arcane#jayce talis#sevika#jonathan sims#becoming aggressively fond of the Jon with a cane headcanon#gregory house#and there. that's it. the only disabled characters I can list off the top of my head#actually huge fucking win for arcane having so many disabled characters. it makes me so happy

finding out ur coworker is way older than you thought and having to very quickly reorient how you talk to them
#art#traditional art#watercolour#fanart#synthv#synthesizer v#genbu#kasane teto#rikka is also here :) i think she likes to cause problems sometimes. because all the adults in her life are dweebs#and very easy to cause problems with <3#anyone else have this happen before. im older than a lot of my university peers and i always have been#because i took 5 years in highschool and my undergrad has been like 6 years and counting#(hashtag learning disability <3 ) and like thats chill to me i dont mind#but now i usually assume everyones way younger than me and i get shocked when theyre not. a buddy in some of my classes#when i first met her i absolutely and completely assumed she was like barely 19 and talked to her as such#like i dont talk down to people or anything but i do soften the way i talk a bit and give a bit extra patience with younger peers#cause yknow. i remember what it was like being 19. being 26 is WAY easier lol so i wanna give em a bit of leeway yknow#anyway a few months after meeting her i found out she was actually a year older than me and a grad student when she ended up as a TA in#another class i took. i felt so bad. we bonded tho and she didnt mind she thought it was kinda funny when i was like WAIT UR A GRAD STUDENT#i thought she was like a first or second year undergrad..............#also yeah im a 31yo teto fan. i dont mind the popular fanon that she has a separate age that makes her actually 15 and#i dont mind that more interpretations have her like that BUT for my internal canon she is a grown ass woman because i think its fun <3#she pays taxes. she goes to work parties. she can rent a car. i love it#let teto rent a car. let her rent a car.#yknow im exicted to be 31. i still got a few more years of being a 20 something which is fun. but being a 30 something sounds like it rules

lmfao canada is just destroying the covid vaccines available for the XBB variant now while we wait UNTIL OCTOBER to get updated vaccines.
i guess it just would've been too hard to destroy them one or two days before the others becomes available huh? /s
they told us to wait until fall and then destroyed all available vaccines we have as fast as they could
#fucking canada#they're trying to see how many people they can kill or disable between now and october i guess#they must be getting close to not being the top country for euthanizing disabled people for organ donations and they're starting to panic/s#canada practices eugenics#covid#disability#eugenics#masking is community care#once again having to push all my medical appointments to the middle of winter and flu season#so fucking fun

The way some ppl talk abt game!maria vs movie!maria is so weird to me bc like ppl go on abt how the movie shows her "being a kid" as if game canon hasn't been doing that (especially in recent media)
Like they just do it differently. Movie!maria does fun things like rollerskating and doodiling funny pictures on shadow's test tube and building blanket forts to watch movies in. Meanwhile game!maria is mostly shown going to school being excited abt her classes and geeking out over the aurora borealis and being so excited to show shadow that she overexerts herself running to take him there. They're basically just being shown as different types of kids
Also. Saying the (apparently) not-chronically-ill version of the character gets to "actually be a kid" more than the original chronically ill version is. A bit strange. Y'know. Smells a bit like ableism in here
#ramblings#like idk! feels like ppl favor movie!maria just bc she's not sick#despite her illness being an important part of her character in the games now#and also quite literally being why shadow was made in the first place? like did ppl forget he was supposed to cure her orrrrr#also the ableism bit. like that's implying disabled kids don't get to like. be kids and enjoy things#maria herself is not shown to be so miserable due to her condition that she can't find joy in life#it's. literally the opposite actually#but bc she's not doing things ppl consider Fun and is instead a bit of a nerd they don't really see that#idk if i'm explaining myself right but you'll get it i hope

something interesting I've noticed in this campaign's discourse is that there's a fascinating moving of goalposts closer to what I (and others with similar opinions) said originally. Like, consider:
this ship isn't interesting because it lacks conflict being met first with "yes it is, you're just evil haters" to "must ships have conflict to be interesting?" to "well if things were DIFFERENT you'd like it"-style claims, threaded through constantly with "obviously it's great/bc I have eyes" tell-and-never-explain style arguments
or
"Bells Hells isn't as bonded" met with "YES THEY ARE THEY PLAYED WHAT THE FUCK IS UP WITH THAT??" to "they would be bonded, but for the plot, which I see as something separable from the story and not the story itself" to "um actually it's better that they're not because that makes it different from the past campaigns where the characters had strong and complex relationships with each other, and novelty is always superior."
#the other fun thing to watch is people bashing orym bc it's pretty transparent they don't like do/rym for whatever reason#but they can't actively attack that bc robbie initiated it and they've developed a saw trap for themselves where you can't criticize him#bc you can't criticize any nonwhite or female or disabled characters and you can't pin this on chetney so. it is orym's fault#for wanting to talk with the person he has had a crush on for months instead of people who rely on him being strong and normal#the breathtaking lack of empathy remains but honestly at this point it's funny watching the cirque du soleil level contortions#the thing about c2 discourse is it was vicious but i did not think the people involved were brainless and heartless#just deeply unkind and lost in the sauce of hiatus-era conspiracy theories; here? zero redeeming qualities.#cr tag

you ever just see a super niche piece of d&d advice (idek if this is the right word for it) and feel an itch in your bones to make an entire zine that's effectively an essay talking about how much you dislike it and the ableist implications of it being enforced at tables but it's just for you because you don't share your thoughts with other human beings that'd be wild and you don't particularly feel like being told it's not actually ableist and you're just oversensitive and can't take a joke today. no just me never mind dw about it
#dungeons and dragons#dnd#d&d#ttrpgs#ttrpg#zines#zine making#for anyone who is interested it's truly so random but here goes the tags rambles we're being brave today and sharing our opinions#so I saw a tiktok (it was actually a reel but we move) of someone joking that as the barbarian in the party#they seem to know their party members' abilities more than they do#like they'll help out the wizard with what spells they have#or have a statblock ready for the druid's wildshape#and I was like huh this is cute and funny we love players supporting each other at the table#and then people in the comments were mentioning that they use timers in their home games??#so like people have two minutes to figure out what they're going to do and do it otherwise they lose their turn and the round moves on#and loads of people were going like “omg this is genius haha gonna do this myself”#and like I cannot express how humiliating it would be for me if I was thinking and someone whips out a literal stopwatch and is like#“go faster grr!!”#I'm chronically ill and neurodivergent and mentally ill and all of my disabilities can affect my cognitive abilities#meaning I can take longer to figure things out than other people or forget what I was doing or how to speak or whatever#and it just got me thinking more generally as well about the obsession with efficiency in our current culture#and how sad it made me that so many people are implementing such a humiliating tool of efficiency in their home games? with their friends?#and like sure if everyone is consenting and happy with it fine but I just hate the idea of punishing disabled people for being disabled#especially when so many of us use ttrpgs as an escape mechanism and a tool of fantasy#like I do not want my high int wizard to have debilitating brain fog that's not part of the dream for me yk?#anyway this is very random but I have been getting really into zine making this year#it's a very fun creative outlet and I find it doesn't have as much as the pressure that other creative hobbies have had for me in the past#we're sharing our opinions woo!! exposure is important in getting over fears and I hate that because it feels so icky!!
