An entire belief system based on those memes that say "pills aren't medicine, this is medicine" over a photo of a mountain. He will bootstraps mentally ill people and addicts into wellness through hard work, discipline, and 4-6 years of forced labor at a camp. Genuinely amazing that someone this fringe and weird gets to frame himself as like, a political blank slate for people to project good opinions onto

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent Launches Nationwide Push for Financial Literacy, WATCH
~~~
SMH
Aside from the tone-deaf nature of someone worth half a billion dollars preaching to struggling families the importance of financial literacy, the deeper issue here is that this guy is preaching bootstraps precisely as his team (trump et al) are f*cking the market and economy. (As of today, 4/22/25, the Nasdaq is down over 15% from the start of the year!) The "personal responsibility" chants of the GOP were always about avoiding the need for "social responsibility" or "governmental responsibility". It's a way of dismissing environmental circumstances and insisting that if you are poor and suffering, it's entirely your fault. But this is next level. While it's true that personal responsibility is *part* of what causes our life outcomes, it is only part. (The tariff nonsense is a good example. So was Covid. One can think of a thousand more that operate on smaller scales as well.) But it's amazing how much the GOP is pushing the bootstraps narrative even while the economy is crashing, clearly beyond our control, and is being caused by this dude and his team. Even further, they're dismantling the systems that help people when we fall on hard times. It's just so blatantly wrong. They're pissing on us and saying it's raining - and that it's our fault we can't farm in it!
Sadly, most of their base (and frankly, most of the country) buys into this personal responsibility and "meritocracy" narrative (by which I mean, ignoring the role of external factors in causing and mitigating such issues), which is precisely how they justify doing whatever they want. If you lose all your money in the stock market bc they crashed it - it's entirely your own fault. If you are bankrupted by a medical emergency - that's also your fault. If you lose your job due to tariffs - that's your fault. And if you can't get back on your feet, esp as social safety nets are gone - that's also your fault. If you die of poverty - yeah, your fault. oh well.
Personal responsibility for all - expect those on top making the decisions that affect everyone else.
p.s. Unsurprisingly, the video I found which is shared above is hosted by the Daily Caller, a rightwing site. No sense of irony from them about this post as the market crashes.
Pps. All that being said, do make sure you're working on your financial literacy (e.g. @bitchesgetriches ) bc we're all gonna be broke due to trump and co.
The Top 10 Hardest Things About Starting a Small Business (And How to Overcome Them)
Starting a small business is an exciting journey, but it is not all passion projects and overnight success. Whether you’re launching a sticker business, an online store, or a local shop, the process is filled with challenges, setbacks, and lessons you never saw coming.
From funding struggles to burnout, many entrepreneurs face unexpected obstacles that can make or break their business. But knowing what to expect—and how to overcome these hurdles—can help turn challenges into opportunities.
Here are the ten hardest things about starting a small business and how to tackle them successfully.
1. Finding the Right Business Idea
The Challenge:
You might have too many ideas, or you may not be able to think of a single good one. Choosing the right business idea is tough because:
• It needs to be profitable.
• It should align with your skills and passion.
• It has to have market demand, meaning people actually want to buy it.
How to Overcome It:
• Test your idea before going all in—survey potential customers or create a prototype.
• Research the competition—if no one is doing it, there may be a reason such as lack of demand.
• Solve a problem—successful businesses fill a gap in the market.
Your first business idea does not have to be your last. Many entrepreneurs pivot after learning what works.
2. Getting Funding for Your Business
The Challenge:
Most businesses need money to start, but where do you get it? Banks require strong credit, investors want proof of success, and using your own savings is risky.
How to Overcome It:
• Start small and test with low-cost products before expanding.
• Look for alternative funding such as crowdfunding, grants, or small business loans.
• Consider bootstrapping by reinvesting early profits instead of taking on debt.
Pre-selling your products is a smart way to generate cash flow before investing too much.
3. Learning Everything (Marketing, Sales, Accounting, and More)
The Challenge:
As a business owner, you wear all the hats—you are the marketer, accountant, customer service rep, and CEO all at once.
How to Overcome It:
• Learn the basics with free online courses on marketing, finance, and branding.
• Use business tools such as accounting software, AI for content creation, and social media planners.
• Outsource when possible by hiring freelancers for things you do not have time to master.
Focus on your strengths and outsource the rest once you can afford it.
4. Building a Customer Base from Scratch
The Challenge:
No customers means no sales. But how do you get people to trust a brand that just launched?
How to Overcome It:
• Leverage social media by consistently posting valuable content.
• Offer early discounts or freebies to incentivize first-time buyers.
• Encourage word-of-mouth by asking happy customers for reviews.
Building a strong brand identity, including a logo, website, and social proof, makes people more likely to buy from you.
5. Managing Time and Avoiding Burnout
The Challenge:
Most small business owners work much more than 40 hours a week—without a boss to set limits, it is easy to burn out.
How to Overcome It:
• Set a schedule and balance work time with personal time.
• Prioritize tasks by focusing on what moves the business forward.
• Take breaks because burnout leads to bad decisions and lower productivity.
You are more productive when well-rested. Take at least one day off per week to recharge.
6. Handling Self-Doubt and Fear of Failure
The Challenge:
Every entrepreneur asks themselves, “What if this fails?” Self-doubt can kill motivation before you even start.
How to Overcome It:
• Focus on progress, not perfection—you will learn as you go.
• Surround yourself with support by connecting with other business owners.
• Celebrate small wins—every sale is proof that you are on the right track.
Every successful business owner has failed before. The key is learning and pivoting when needed.
7. Dealing with Slow Sales and Unpredictable Income
The Challenge:
Some months are great, while others are painfully slow—especially in the beginning.
How to Overcome It:
• Have a backup fund by setting aside money during good months.
• Create multiple revenue streams by selling online, at markets, and on different platforms.
• Run promotions during slow periods, such as flash sales or limited-time discounts.
Focus on repeat customers because loyal customers spend more and shop often.
8. Standing Out in a Crowded Market
The Challenge:
No matter what business you start, there is competition. So how do you make people choose you over others?
How to Overcome It:
• Find your Unique Selling Proposition (USP)—what makes your brand different?
• Offer top-tier customer service because people remember great experiences.
• Build a personal brand so that people connect with you, not just your product.
Brand story matters—people buy from businesses they relate to.
9. Managing Inventory and Supply Chain Issues
The Challenge:
Whether you are selling physical products or digital goods, inventory management can be a headache—especially when suppliers have delays or price increases.
How to Overcome It:
• Start with small batches and do not overstock before testing demand.
• Work with reliable suppliers and always have a backup plan.
• Track inventory closely using software to avoid running out or over-ordering.
Having a pre-order system can help manage unexpected inventory shortages.
10. Staying Motivated When Things Get Hard
The Challenge:
Not every day will be exciting. Some days, you will want to quit. Motivation comes and goes, but consistency is key.
How to Overcome It:
• Remember your “why”—what made you start this business?
• Join entrepreneur communities because talking to other business owners helps.
• Set small goals by breaking big tasks into manageable wins.
Mindset is everything—keep pushing forward, even when it is tough.
Final Thoughts: Is Starting a Small Business Worth It?
Absolutely. Even though starting a business is hard, the freedom, creativity, and potential for success make it worth the effort. Every challenge you face is a learning opportunity that brings you closer to long-term success.
What is the hardest part of starting a business for you? Share your thoughts in the comments.
Just days before beginning a prison sentence for her part in a $4.5 billion crypto heist, Heather Morgan — who, under the name Razzlekhan, went as viral for her rap videos as the outsized crime itself — is already determined to rewrite her story.
“People act like I’m some evil villain bitch or some dumb trophy wife,” Morgan, 34, told NYNext. “I can’t be both those things, but I can be neither.”
In an exclusive interview before she surrenders February 4 at a federal institute in Victorville, California, Morgan said she wanted to set the record straight about her involvement in the “Biggest Heist Ever” — as a recent Netflix documentary based on her and husband Ilya Lichtenstein’s story titles it.
“I’m not proud of the acts that led my husband and I to being arrested,” Morgan said. But she remains defiant in her choice not to rat him out for a better plea deal.
“I could have thrown him under the bus five different ways … I’d rather be a proud felon than a disloyal backstabbing wife … ,” she said. “As a dedicated wife, I didn’t want to do anything that would put him in a worse position.”
But her main message? “This was a media spectacle — but they were wrong about me.”
She has now launched a legal battle against Netflix, claiming the film is defamatory.
While it was Lichtenstein who hacked the Bitfinex exchange in 2016 and stole 119,754 Bitcoin (then worth $71 million), Morgan allowed her personal financial accounts to be used for laundering and helped set up numerous virtual currency exchange accounts to conceal the source of the money — something she believes any wife would do.
“What married couple doesn’t have intermingled finances?” shesaid of her involvement.
According to the criminal complaint, the couple — who rented a $1.5 million apartment in FiDi, reportedly decorated with animal pelts and a taxidermy alligator — spent the illegal proceeds on, among other things, gold and NFTs.
When the Bitcoin Bonnie and Clyde, as they’ve been dubbed, were arrested at their Manhattan home in 2022, prosecutors found a bag of burner phones and a file on Lichtenstein’s computer called “passport_ideas.”
They pleaded guilty to money laundering a year later. Morgan received 18 months. Lichtenstein was sentenced to five years and has already served over half of his time at a detention center.
Despite underscoring her loyalty to her husband and partner in crime, Morgan ironically wanted to make a new friend in prison: Caroline Ellison — the FTX executive who got a heavily shortened sentence for fraud thanks to ratting on her colleagues, including ex-boyfriend Sam Bankman-Fried.
“I asked for Danbury prison, hoping I might get to know Caroline Ellison, as I thought it would be a fun plot twist,” she said. “And I figured she probably had the resources to pick a bougie facility.”
Morgan didn’t exactly grow up bougie. She was raised in a rural town in Northern California where, she once wrote on Instagram, “my dad literally trained me on how to hunt with a spear ‘in case a wild bore [sic] charged me.'”
After bouncing around Japan, she studied at the University of California Davis and the American University in Cairo before, at age 23, founding a sales tech company called SalesFolk. That’s how she met Lichtenstein, a Russia-born entrepreneur and crypto investor who had secured a $1.5 million investment from Mark Cuban and other investors for his sales start-up MixRank in 2011.
“I spent most of my twenties working my ass off to build a bootstrapped business by myself, which I turned into a million-dollar business,” Morgan said. “In the end, all the money I made from my first company went to paying legal bills for my husband and me.”
Before that happened, though, the “business ultimately left me burnt out and feeling unfulfilled, which is why I decided to create Razzlekhan.”
Perhaps the only thing more surprising than the heist’s enormous monetary sum was Morgan’s second life as a rapper who, according to her website, was “taking on everyone from big software companies to health care to finance bros.”
In a now-viral video for her song “Versace Bedouin,” Morgan promoted herself as the “crocodile of Wall Street” while jumping around FiDi landmarks in a gold jacket and cap that reads “0 F–ks,” as unwitting tourists gawp from the sidewalk.
The feds even quoted some of her lyrics in the case against her: “Spear phish your password / All your funds transferred,” their court filing read, adding that it was a reference to a hacking technique.
Now, Morgan said she’s tired of being depicted as a woman who found a rich guy to support her artistic aspirations.
“The government somehow managed to weaponize Razzlekhan to undermine all of my professional business accomplishments as an entrepreneur,” she told NYNext.
“No money from the heist was ever spent on Razzlekhan … people hear this huge sum of money but we’re not lavish. We’re eccentric.”
When Morgan and Lichtenstein married, friends carried her down the aisle atop a Moroccan-style bridal throne as the 1986 hair-metal anthem “The Final Countdown” played; at the reception after, Morgan performed one of her own songs, “Turkish Martha Stewart.”
Last Friday, Morgan released a song and music video, “DIPLOMAT P–$¥” about a jet-setting life: “Moved to Cairo from Hong Kong/ Late Night partying with tech moguls/ Hella stalkers, marriage proposals/ Dated a motherf–king crazy rich Asian.”
While it’s based in part on her story, Morgan insisted, “There is a huge contradiction between me and Razzlekhan” — adding that in real life, she’s Type A, while her alter ego is a party girl. “Razzlekhan was the first time in my life I was truly doing something for myself.”
She’s not happy with the way her story has been told in Netflix’s “The Biggest Heist Ever” and said her attorney has sent cease-and-desist letters to the streamer, producer Library Films, filmmaker Chris Smith and journalist Nick Bilton, who wrote the film.
Morgan’s attorney Serena Wu told NYNext: “We are reviewing our legal options but starting with these cease and desist letters,” adding that the film is disseminating “defamatory statements against Ms. Morgan.”
Morgan said she speaks to her husband, whom she hasn’t seen in three years, every day and plans to reunite with him when they are both out. The couple will also be reuniting with their Bengal cat Clarissa, who Morgan allegedly used to distract federal agents when their apartment was raided. The cat will spend the coming months with Morgan’s close friends and stay active on Instagram, she added.
And, “when I come out of prison, I look forward to continuing to pursue creative endeavors as Razzlekhan,” Morgan said. “The [prison] is conveniently located not too far from Hollywood, so let’s see what happens next.
“This is not the last the world will be hearing from me.”
2 ─ 4/100 days of code, 26 ─ 280523
coding progress —
✓ day 2 : CSS Bootstrap Practice ✓ day 3 : Recap of the full HTML + CSS Lessons ✓ day 4 : Building a responsive Landing page
i'm finally done with HTML and CSS, i found that having experience working with webflow made understanding the grid system and flexbox much easier!
but i can't say i'm good with css yet; my learning process so far has been based a lot on theory and less on practice.
i'm planning to change that.
so before starting the Java script chapter, i prepared some HTML and CSS challenges to help me get more familiar working with these tools.
challenge number one : is to make a responsive landing page
i started working on it this morning, learning bootstrap is really making building anything so easy,
it feels abit like cheating! ꒰・‿・๑꒱
work in progress of the landing page
idk if this is a hot take or not, but screw it,
the eternal egg isn't great, but it's not as useless as you might think it is.
The egg, a common joker that gains $3 of sell value at the end of the round, starting at a base sell value of $2.
On the surface, it may appear that the egg is only useful as a small little investment of a joker slot, as one of the obvious strats you can do around it is keep it for a few antes, let it gain some decent sell value, and then sell it for a good bit of money from it's increase sell value.
While this is a perfectly valid and good strategy, the egg is able to receive the 'eternal' sticker, which prevents it from being sold or destroyed, completely preventing you from using the strategy with it that I just mentioned, which is why you may see people call the eternal egg 'useless' as a result.
However, that is far from the only strategy you can employ with the help of the egg, those of which I will take you through on this post.
Let's spend $3 on an arcana pack, see what tarot cards we find.
Eternal Egg Synergy 1: Temperance.
Ah, there's the temperance I've been looking for.
This is a tarot card that gives you the total sell value of all current jokers in money, capping out at a maximum of $50.
Which brings me onto my first synergy with the eternal egg, as the egg increases it's sell value per round, temperance also goes up by $3 per round as well until it reaches the $50 cap.
The hermit might also spring to your mind here, doubling your money up to a max of $20, making a maxed out temperance 2.5x more valuable than a hermit card. $50 vs $20.
While maxing out temperance is hard if not impossible to achieve in most runs, the egg joker is one of the most consistent ways to max out temperance, giving you on average much more money from arcana packs overall.
So it's a tad inconsistent as you have to specifically pull temperance but it pays off big time if you can hit the temperance card.
Eternal Egg Synergy 2: Swashbuckler.
This is a common joker that adds the sell value of all other owned jokers to your mult.
As stated before, the egg joker adds $3 to it's own sell value every single round, which in turn, means that the swashbuckler joker also gains +3 mult every single round as well, which gives you a strong combo of jokers that pair very well, giving you a very nice flat mult bonus that just gets stronger and stronger every round you play with these two.
It's not the greatest flat mult option by far, especially because it takes up two joker slots, but it's still one that can be very useful to your run if given enough time to scale up properly.
Eternal Egg Synergy 3 and 4: Bull and Bootstraps.
To oversimplify things a little bit, these two jokers gain chips and mult respectively depending on how much money you have, and another good way to earn money is via tarot cards.
While the hermit is also another decent source of money, as I have stated before, a maxed out temperance is much stronger than a hermit, and grants these two jokers quite the increase, as $50 is usually quite a strong amount of money for you in most scenarios, potentially earning you more money long-term in contrast of just selling the egg if it's not eternal, therefore, potentially also making these much stronger in contrast to selling the egg as well if you get lucky enough.
Eternal Egg Anti-Synergy 1: Ceremonial Dagger
This is an uncommon joker that when a blind is selected, destroy Joker to the right and permanently add double its sell value to this Mult.
A common strategy with this joker is to let the egg build up quite a bit of sell value, and later on sacrificing it to the dagger for a strong boost in flat mult, giving the dagger an extra +6 mult per round the egg is in your joker slots for, as the egg gains $3 in sell value per round, and 3x2=6.
Overall conclusion: In most cases the eternal egg is not worth picking up, but it still has some useful cases for it that may make you consider to pick it up, especially if it has an edition on it from the shop or buffoon pack itself.
None of the synergies I have mentioned in this post are exclusive to it having the eternal sticker exactly, but I showcase these to show you some places where you can benefit well from it regardless of it having the eternal sticker or not.
Also almost never pick this thing up if it has the rental sticker on it btw.
Some gold stake runs where I have taken advantage of the egg strategies below:
(Not an eternal egg here but I had bootstraps up for the leaf boss and the strategy would've worked completely fine without the negative on the swashbuckler and if the egg was eternal as well.)
have i mentioned streaming before ? bc i love the idea of synthia technical streams where i do 3 types of things:
Bootstrapped (meta stuff like coding tech for the stream, blog theme development, vocal processing, technical systems for synthia cosplay/drag)
Bait (if it's silly and educational and programming....)
Bossmusic (composition, synthesis, figuring out how to use my SY77 lmao)
I'm not in a position to do this yet and i'd have to look into the privacy side of it as well, but I do love the idea of an irregular stream series that builds itself and core components and one where I randomly spend 4 hours implementing a MIDI-based authentication system in idk Perl or something just to see what happens
#daemon.md#streaming#progblr#it would be small bc irregular streaming and also niche topics#but would give me incentive#and i think it would be fun to make my actual software developer mutuals cringe >:3c
Days after Meta launched its new app, Threads, this month, a software engineer at the company named Ben Savage introduced himself to a developer group at the World Wide Web Consortium, a web standards body. The group, which maintains a protocol for connecting social networks called ActivityPub, had been preparing for this moment for months, ever since rumors first emerged that Meta planned to join the standard. Now, that moment had arrived. “I'm really interested to see how this interoperable future plays out!” he wrote.
Warm replies to Savage’s email filtered in. And then came another response:
“The company you work for does disgusting things among others. It harms relationships and isolates people. It builds walls and lures people into them. When that doesn't suffice, brutal peer pressure does … That said, welcome to the list, Ben.”
Meta’s embrace of ActivityPub, used by apps including the Twitter-like Mastodon, was bound to be a little awkward. The constellation of small apps and personal servers that currently use the protocol, known as the Fediverse, is marked by an ethos of sharing and openness, not profit-seeking or user bases denominated in the billions. ActivityPub is designed to allow users of different apps to not only interact and view each others’ content, but also move their digital identity from one service to another. Mastodon, the largest app in the Fediverse, is open source and run by a nonprofit, and smaller Fediverse apps like PeerTube and Lemmy are often held up as a repudiation of the closed nature of services such as YouTube or Reddit. Corporations like Meta are typically held up as the enemy. No surprise that, despite appeals from ActivityPub leaders for civility when Meta arrived on the listserv, some couldn’t hold their tongue.
Weeks-old Threads already dwarfs the Fediverse, which has been around for more than a decade and recently peaked at about 4 million active monthly users. Some Fediverse fans see that imbalance as a win: Suddenly, the network could become many times more relevant. Others consider that view naive and expect Meta’s size to push the small world of apps built on ActivityPub in undesirable directions. Some have circulated a pact to preemptively block content from Threads’ servers from appearing on their own.
“The Fediverse community has been jolted into motion—due to fear and loathing of Meta, and also excitement,” says Dmitri Zagidulin, a developer who leads the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) group responsible for discussing the future of ActivityPub. The prospect of Meta joining the decentralized movement has people trying to spiff up their projects and prepare for the spotlight. “There are furious meetings. Grants being applied for. Pull requests. Pushes for better security, better user experience. Better everything,” he says.
Zagidulin is himself a member of a Mastodon server that operates as a social cooperative, where users collectively decide major decisions. They recently held a vote on whether to preemptively block Threads, a process known as defederation. The result: 51 percent in favor, 49 percent against.
That divide reflects different visions for the Fediverse’s future. One involves embracing Threads to bootstrap the network’s stagnant growth. The ideals of openness and giving users more control didn’t tempt many people to join platforms like Mastodon until Elon Musk’s chaotic takeover of Twitter sent many longtime users looking for new digital homes. Even then, the bump quickly went bust. Some users gave up after finding federation tools confusing compared to Twitter. Then came Bluesky, a competitor supported by Twitter founder Jack Dorsey that reflects many of the same principles but is developing a rival decentralized protocol to ActivityPub.
Amidst those challenges, Meta’s interest dangles the potential of the company’s vast resources and reach to inject new life into the Fediverse movement. “This is a clear victory for our cause,” wrote Eugen Rochko, CEO of Mastodon, in a blog post on the day Threads launched.
Others simply want Meta out. To Fediverse users like Vanta Black, the warm response from community leaders to Meta’s interest felt like betrayal. In 2017, as she navigated her gender identity, she found a home in small Mastodon communities where moderators and users intermingled and held shared values for how to filter out hateful posts. She fears the arrival of millions of Threads users will unleash volumes of content into the Fediverse that are impossible to manage.
This spring, after rumors that Meta was planning a project that would integrate with ActivityPub, Black launched the “Anti-Meta FediPact,” a pledge for Fediverse communities to defederate from the company’s future offering. So far, the pact has been signed by a few hundred admins, most representing smaller Fediverse groups. Others are having similar debates to Zagidulin’s group, part of a lively discussion about whether members of an “open” ecosystem should preemptively block new participants.
Black points out that there’s precedent: a collective effort in 2019 to block the far-right social network Gab after it began using Mastodon’s software. The effort was considered broadly successful at blocking Gab content from filtering into the Fediverse. Meta’s content moderation policies, as well as its role in human rights abuses and global conflicts, Black argues, put it in the same must-block bucket. She sees the hunger for growth expressed by some Fediverse leaders conflicting with what’s best for the community. “Success for the Fediverse to me is retaining what makes it the Fediverse now,” she says.
Johannes Ernst, a member of the W3C’s ActivityPub group, says he can sympathize with those who wish to defederate for reasons of personal safety. But at the same time, he can’t help but feel that attracting Meta realizes an elusive dream for the open protocol.
The Fediverse’s small size can feel intimate—but also isolating for people who want to connect with family and friends not interested in the arcana of distributed online services, or who want to build new Fediverse services to serve large user bases. Suddenly, rather than trying to build a network from scratch, they will potentially have access to more than a hundred million users. “It’s an entirely different conversation,” he says.
How Meta decides to implement ActivityPub in Threads will help determine the outcome of what could be the Fediverse’s big bang. “It’s not plug-and-play,” says Ernst. The company will have to choose how closely to allow Threads users to integrate with other Fediverse servers. That includes deciding how easily users can migrate their accounts and networks to other services, and whether to provide support such as tools that redirect followers to a user’s new home. Meta’s leaders will also have to decide what kinds of Threads content will be broadcast out into the Fediverse—including, potentially, the role of ads—and how users outside of Threads will be able to see or interact with it on their own platforms. Meta did not respond to a request for comment.
Given that Threads could at a stroke represent the majority of Fediverse users and content, those choices will be deeply felt by existing users of decentralized apps. And anyone building a Fediverse app could find themselves essentially forced to optimize sharing content with Threads users. Mastodon plays a similar role on the network right now because of its large relative size, Ernst says, but so far it has a good relationship and open dialog with other Fediverse developers. A giant for-profit corporation might not manage to do the same.
Meta executives told staffers last week that ActivityPub integration “is a long way off,” according to The Verge. There’s a history of large platforms being quick to announce their interest in the protocol but slower to implement any integration, Zagidulin says, pointing to Tumblr’s as-yet-unrealized announcement last year of ActivityPub integration. Meta itself has a fickle history with open protocols. A decade ago, the company briefly embraced XMPP, an interoperable messaging protocol, along with competitors like Microsoft. But the effort was quickly abandoned.
But conditions are different now. Government officials mulling how to regulate large tech platforms today often turn to the idea of requiring interoperability, says Georgios Petropoulos, a researcher at the MIT Initiative on the Digital Economy. Threads is not currently available in Europe, due at least in part to uncertainties related to the EU’s new Digital Markets Act and other regulations—especially rules related to how Threads user data will interact with data on other platforms, Petropoulos believes. The new EU rules also contain provisions on interoperability that are still being hashed out. It’s logical, Petropoulos says, for Meta to work with a protocol that’s partly managed by W3C, a respectable global standards organization, and that has already attracted other mainstream platforms like Tumblr. But it’s too soon to know how seriously the Facebook parent will take interoperability.
In the meantime, users like Zagidulin and Black are already taking action in response to just the specter of Meta’s integration into—or engulfment of—the Fediverse.
Zagidulin’s co-op server is planning more votes to determine how exactly to proceed. With the community evenly split, he says, one scenario would be to split the community across two servers—one that communicates with Meta’s empire and one that doesn’t. Black isn’t so optimistic about managing the divide. “I’d prefer the status quo, rather than two castles where one is sunny and one is dark,” she says.
I love the fact that even the people the system is supposedly for - the academics, the ultra-studious, the researchers - also suffer in the end.
I was at one point the highest attaining student in my entire high school. I took 12 GCSEs (you only technically need about 4 most people take 8 or 9), and by the end, learned almost every subject basically cover-to-cover, so much so that I had many a lesson where I just did my own thing because they had nothing left to teach me.
I learned a lot from that. Yes the content of the courses, but moreso life-lessons.
1 - The system is 'designed' for nobody. Those who lag behind, fall behind, are left behind. Those who push ahead, are literally stopped from doing so.
Don't believe me? Here's an example:
I've always been interested in maths. I love complicated mathematical concepts. I love the beauty that emerges from such simple rules. So it follows that I spent basically my entire school career waiting for the curriculum to catch up with what I found exciting. I remember being thrilled at the end of primary school that we were "finally" doing a bit of algebra.
But yet again, by year 11, at the tail end of the GCSE course, I was done. I mean this with full honesty when I say I could get full marks on GCSE maths papers in my fucking sleep. I did it. I finished the course. There was genuinely nothing more to do.
So my teacher let me study higher level stuff. At that time I was planning to do A-level maths so I started working my way through that. Differentials, integrals, complex trigonometry, interesting stuff to my little school brain.
One day the head of maths, accompanied by some sort of important school governor person, walks in and sees me doing differentiation. Flash forward a week, banned. I was banned from STUDYING. MATHS. IN A MATHS CLASS. I was required to do GCSE level work, even though there wasn't any left.
Thankfully, my teacher was like 'wtf no' and sneakily gave me more interesting stuff to do, but that taught me something. The system is genuinely not built to handle exceptional students. It's not built to push people, to challenge them where they are LITERALLY ASKING TO BE CHALLENGED. Nope, it's all standardised. Your passions? Standardised. Your hopes? Not according to data in a spreadsheet. Your life? Don't even think about it.
And that's not me being hyperbolic or edgy. I was not living.
2 - making school your life is fucking. Dreadful.
But it's all I'd ever known. I was always a goodie-two-shoes-teachers-pet-whatever (and kind of still am ngl). But that attitude did such serious damage to me in the long run. It drove me away from others my age, away from socialising, away from dumb fun. I was a serious person who took everything seriously 100% of the time. And so, those were my friends too. The people who's entire life was based on huge ambitions, and numbers on a page at the end of an exam season.
You wanna know how many times I hung out with my high-school friends, outside of school? You wanna take a guess?
0. Zero times. I basically only had a social life at all after one of my not-school friends forced me to download snapchat lmao
Sometimes I feel like I barely had a teenage-hood. I was so strict, so laser-focused that I maybe lost sight of what the fuck I was doing it all for in the first place?
3 - You will work yourself to death for numbers on a page. It will not feel good at the end.
I don't even think I need to explain this one.
Our exam season was split into two halves, with a week's break in the middle. It's supposed to be a break. It's also supposed to be a chance to study, revise, and get ready for the last, grueling weeks of exams.
Given the fact that 'break' and 'study' are kiiind of contradictory, you can probably guess that I actually did neither of those. I just crashed. Fell into a slump and crashed.
And yeah, sure, I picked myself up by my bootstraps and got right back to work at the end of that week. But I don't really consider the stress of failure beating the stress of exhaustion as a huge win if I'm honest.
So, where does that leave us?
Right now, tired. Tired as fuck. I look back on a decade-long life of schooling and education and I don't know who I really am or wanna be.
I bought into the system so hard. I threw myself in and literally came out on top. And I don't even know if it was worth it lmao.
To be fair, there are other things at play. Probably an anxiety disorder, depressive tendencies, and being a young trans girl in an "all-boys" high school is not exactly a recipe for a healthy young person lol
But I can't help but think if it had just been a little less strict, a little less enabling of all those fears and anxieties, a little less focused on achievement over experience, I might have a little bit of better relationshio with myself.
But, oh well. What's a girl to do but build a life for herself. I'll get there. One day at a time. And when I look back on myself as I am today, hopefully, I'll be proud as fuck of the girl who worked her ass off for herself.
A Twitter Thread from David Bowles:
[Text transcript at the end of the screenshots]
I'll let you in on a secret. I have a doctorate in education, but the field’s basically just a 100 years old. We don’t really know what we’re doing. Our scholarly understanding of how learning happens is like astronomy 2000 years ago.
Most classroom practice is astrology.
Before the late 19th century, no human society had ever attempted to formally educate the entire populace. It was either aristocracy, meritocracy, or a blend. And always male.
We’re still smack-dab in the middle of the largest experiment on children ever done.
Most teachers perpetuate the “banking” model (Freire) used on them by their teachers, who likewise inherited it from theirs, etc.
Thus the elite “Lyceum” style of instruction continues even though it’s ineffectual with most kids.
What’s worse, the key strategies we’ve discovered, driven by cognitive science & child psychology, are quite regularly dismissed by pencil-pushing, test-driven administrators. Much like Trump ignores science, the majority of principals & superintendents I’ve known flout research.
Some definitions:
Banking model --> kids are like piggy banks: empty till you fill them with knowledge that you're the expert in.
Lyceum --> originally Aristotle's school, where the sons of land-owning citizens learned through lectures and research.
Things we (scholars) DO know:
-Homework doesn't really help, especially younger kids.
-Students don't learn a thing from testing. Most teachers don't either (it's supposed to help them tweak instruction, but that rarely happens).
-Spending too much time on weak subjects HURTS.
Do you want kids to learn? Here's something we've discovered: kids learn things that matter to them, either because the knowledge and skills are "cool," or because .... they give the kids tools to liberate themselves and their communities.
Maintaining the status quo? Nope.
Kids are acutely aware of injustice and by nature rebellious against the systems of authority that keep autonomy away from them.
If you're perpetuating those systems, teachers, you've already freaking lost.
They won't be learning much from you. Except what not to become. Sure, you can wear them down. That's what happened to most of you, isn't it? You saw the hideous flaw in the world and wanted to heal it. But year after numbing year, they made you learn their dogma by rote.
And now many of you are breaking the souls of children, too.
For what?
It's all smoke and mirrors. All the carefully crafted objectives, units and exams.
WE. DON'T. KNOW. HOW. PEOPLE. LEARN.
We barely understand the physical mechanisms behind MEMORY. But we DO know kids aren't empty piggy banks. They are BRIMMING with thought.
The last and most disgusting reality? The thing I hear in classroom after freaking classroom?
Education is all about capitalism.
"You need to learn these skills to get a good job." To be a good laborer. To help the wealthy generate more wealth, while you get scraps.
THAT is why modern education is a failure.
Its basic premise is monstrous.
"Why should I learn to read, Dr. Bowles?"
Because reading is magical. It makes life worth living. And being able to read, you can decode the strategies of your oppressors & stop them w/ their own words.
Choosing the Right Business Structure in Bangalore
One of the most critical decisions before you officially start a company in Bangalore is picking the right business structure. It impacts your liability, scalability, and investment-readiness.
Here’s a quick overview:
1. Private Limited Company (Pvt Ltd)
Suitable for businesses planning to raise investment or scale
Limited liability protection for shareholders
Requires at least two directors and shareholders
2. Limited Liability Partnership (LLP)
Combines the flexibility of a partnership with limited liability benefits
Ideal for service-based firms or professional partnerships
Minimum two partners required
3. One Person Company (OPC)
Perfect for solo founders looking to incorporate a legal entity
Limited liability and full control by a single owner
Best for bootstrapped startups or freelancers turning formal
