Prison-tech is a scam - and a harbinger of your future
Tumblr media
If you'd like an essay-formatted version of this post to read or share, here's a link to it on pluralistic.net, my surveillance-free, ad-free, tracker-free blog:
https://pluralistic.net/2024/02/14/minnesota-nice/#shitty-technology-adoption-curve
Tumblr media
Here's how the shitty technology adoption curve works: when you want to roll out a new, abusive technology, look for a group of vulnerable people whose complaints are roundly ignored and subject them to your bad idea. Sand the rough edges off on their bodies and lives. Normalize the technological abuse you seek to inflict.
Next: work your way up the privilege gradient. Maybe you start with prisoners, then work your way up to asylum seekers, parolees and mental patients. Then try it on kids and gig workers. Now, college students and blue collar workers. Climb that curve, bit by bit, until you've reached its apex and everyone is living with your shitty technology:
https://pluralistic.net/2021/02/24/gwb-rumsfeld-monsters/#bossware
Prisoners, asylum seekers, drug addicts and other marginalized people are the involuntary early adopters of every form of disciplinary technology. They are the leading indicators of the ways that technology will be ruining your life in the future. They are the harbingers of all our technological doom.
Which brings me to Minnesota.
Minnesota is one of the first states make prison phone-calls free. This is a big deal, because prison phone-calls are a big business. Prisoners are literally a captive audience, and the telecommunications sector is populated by sociopaths, bred and trained to spot and exploit abusive monopoly opportunities. As states across America locked up more and more people for longer and longer terms, the cost of operating prisons skyrocketed, even as states slashed taxes on the rich and turned a blind eye to tax evasion.
This presented telco predators with an unbeatable opportunity: they approached state prison operators and offered them a bargain: "Let us take over the telephone service to your carceral facility and we will levy eye-watering per-minute charges on the most desperate people in the world. Their families – struggling with one breadwinner behind bars – will find the money to pay this ransom, and we'll split the profits with you, the cash-strapped, incarceration-happy state government."
This was the opening salvo, and it turned into a fantastic little money-spinner. Prison telco companies and state prison operators were the public-private partnership from hell. Prison-tech companies openly funneled money to state coffers in the form of kickbacks, even as they secretly bribed prison officials to let them gouge their inmates and inmates' families:
https://www.motherjones.com/politics/2019/02/mississippi-corrections-corruption-bribery-private-prison-hustle/
As digital technology got cheaper and prison-tech companies got greedier, the low end of the shitty tech adoption curve got a lot more crowded. Prison-tech companies started handing out "free" cheap Android tablets to prisoners, laying the groundwork for the next phase of the scam. Once prisoners had tablets, prisons could get rid of phones altogether and charge prisoners – and their families – even higher rates to place calls right to the prisoner's cell.
Then, prisons could end in-person visits and replace them with sub-skype, postage-stamp-sized videoconferencing, at rates even higher than the voice-call rates. Combine that with a ban on mailing letters to and from prisoners – replaced with a service that charged even higher rates to scan mail sent to prisoners, and then charged prisoners to download the scans – and prison-tech companies could claim to be at the vanguard of prison safety, ending the smuggling of dope-impregnated letters and other contraband into the prison system.
Prison-tech invented some wild shit, like the "digital stamp," a mainstay of industry giant Jpay, which requires prisoners to pay for "stamps" to send or receive a "page" of email. If you're keeping score, you've realized that this is a system where prisoners and their families have to pay for calls, "in-person" visits, handwritten letters, and email.
It goes on: prisons shuttered their libraries and replaced them with ebook stores that charged 2-4 times the prices you'd pay for books on the outside. Prisoners were sold digital music at 200-300% markups relative to, say, iTunes.
Remember, these are prisoners: locked up for years or decades, decades during which their families scraped by with a breadwinner behind bars. Prisoners can earn money, sure – as much as $0.89/hour, doing forced labor for companies that contract with prisons for their workforce:
https://www.prisonpolicy.org/blog/2017/04/10/wages/
Of course, there's the odd chance for prisoners to make really big bucks – $2-5/day. All they have to do is "volunteer" to fight raging wildfires:
https://www.hcn.org/articles/climate-desk-wildfire-california-incarcerated-firefighters-face-dangerous-work-low-pay-and-covid19/
So those $3 digital music tracks are being bought by people earning as little as $0.10/hour. Which makes it especially galling when prisons change prison-tech suppliers, whereupon all that digital music is deleted, wiping prisoners' media collection out – forever (literally, for prisoners serving life terms):
https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2018/08/captive-audience-how-floridas-prisons-and-drm-made-113m-worth-prisoners-music
Let's recap: America goes on a prison rampage, locking up ever-larger numbers of people for ever-longer sentences. Once inside, prisoners had their access to friends and family rationed, along with access to books, music, education and communities outside. This is very bad for prisoners – strong ties to people outside is closely tied to successful reentry – but it's great for state budgets, and for wardens, thanks to kickbacks:
https://www.prisonpolicy.org/blog/2021/12/21/family_contact/
Back to Minnesota: when Minnesota became the fourth state in the USA where the state, not prisoners, would pay for prison calls, it seemed like they were finally breaking the vicious cycle in which every dollar ripped off of prisoners' family paid 40 cents to the state treasury:
https://www.kaaltv.com/news/no-cost-phone-calls-for-those-incarcerated-in-minnesota/
But – as Katya Schwenk writes for The Lever – what happened next is "a case study in how prison communication companies and their private equity owners have managed to preserve their symbiotic relationship with state corrections agencies despite reforms — at the major expense of incarcerated people and their families":
https://www.levernews.com/wall-streets-new-prison-scam/
Immediately after the state ended the ransoming of prisoners' phone calls, the private-equity backed prison-tech companies that had dug their mouth-parts into the state's prison jacked up the price of all their other digital services. For example, the price of a digital song in a Minnesota prison just jumped from $1.99 to $2.36 (for prisoners earning as little as $0.25/hour).
As Paul Wright from the Human Rights Defense Center told Schwenk, "The ideal world for the private equity owners of these companies is every prisoner has one of their tablets, and every one of those tablets is hooked up to the bank account of someone outside of prison that they can just drain."
The state's new prison-tech supplier promises to double the amount of kickbacks it pays the state each year, thanks to an aggressive expansion into games, money transfers, and other "services." The perverse incentive isn't hard to spot: the more these prison-tech companies charge, the more kickbacks they pay to the prisons.
The primary prison-tech company for Minnesota's prisons is Viapath (nee Global Tel Link), which pioneered price-gouging on in-prison phone calls. Viapath has spent the past two decades being bought and sold by different private equity firms: Goldman Sachs, Veritas Capital, and now the $46b/year American Securities.
Viapath competes with another private equity-backed prison-tech giant: Aventiv (Securus, Jpay), owned by Platinum Equity. Together, Viapath and Aventiv control 90% of the prison-tech market. These companies have a rap-sheet as long as your arm: bribing wardens, stealing from prisoners and their families, and recording prisoner-attorney calls. But these are the kinds of crimes the state punishes with fines and settlements – not by terminating its contracts with these predators.
These companies continue to flout the law. Minnesota's new free-calls system bans prison-tech companies from paying kickbacks to prisons and prison-officials for telcoms services, so the prison-tech companies have rebranded ebooks, music, and money-transfers as non-communications products, and the kickbacks are bigger than ever.
This is the bottom end of the shitty technology adoption curve. Long before Ubisoft started deleting games that you'd bought a "perpetual license" for, prisoners were having their media ganked by an uncaring corporation that knew it was untouchable:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VIqyvquTEVU
Revoking your media, charging by the byte for messaging, confiscating things in the name of security and then selling them back to you – these are all tactics that were developed in the prison system, refined, normalized, and then worked up the privilege gradient. Prisoners are living in your technology future. It's just not evenly distributed – yet.
As it happens, prison-tech is at the heart of my next novel, The Bezzle, which comes out on Feb 20. This is a followup to last year's bestselling Red Team Blues, which introduced the world to Marty Hench, a two-fisted, hard-bitten, high-tech forensic accountant who's spent 40 years busting Silicon Valley finance scams:
https://us.macmillan.com/books/9781250865878/thebezzle
In The Bezzle, we travel with Marty back to the mid 2000s (Hench is a kind of tech-scam Zelig and every book is a standalone tale of high-tech ripoffs from a different time and place). Marty's trying to help his old pal Scott Warms, a once-high-flying founder who's fallen prey to California's three-strikes law and is now facing decades in a state pen. As bad as things are, they get worse when the prison starts handing out "free" tablet and closing down the visitation room, the library, and the payphones.
This is an entry to the thing I love most about the Hench novels: the opportunity to turn all this dry, financial skullduggery into high-intensity, high-stakes technothriller plot. For me, Marty Hench is a tool for flensing the scam economy of all its layers of respectability bullshit and exposing the rot at the core.
It's not a coincidence that I've got a book coming out in a week that's about something that's in the news right now. I didn't "predict" this current turn – I observed it. The world comes at you fast and technology news flutters past before you can register it. Luckily, I have a method for capturing this stuff as it happens:
https://pluralistic.net/2021/05/09/the-memex-method/
Writing about tech issues that are long-simmering but still in the periphery is a technique I call "predicting the present." It's the technique I used when I wrote Little Brother, about out-of-control state surveillance of the internet. When Snowden revealed the extent of NSA spying in 2013, people acted as though I'd "predicted" the Snowden revelations:
https://www.wired.com/story/his-writing-radicalized-young-hackers-now-he-wants-to-redeem-them/
But Little Brother and Snowden's own heroic decision have a common origin: the brave whistleblower Mark Klein, who walked into EFF's offices in 2006 and revealed that he'd been ordered by his boss at AT&T to install a beam-splitter into the main fiber trunk so that the NSA could illegally wiretap the entire internet:
https://www.eff.org/document/public-unredacted-klein-declaration
Mark Klein inspired me to write Little Brother – but despite national press attention, the Klein revelations didn't put a stop to NSA spying. The NSA was still conducting its lawless surveillance campaign in 2013, when Snowden, disgusted with NSA leadership for lying to Congress under oath, decided to blow the whistle again:
https://apnews.com/article/business-33a88feb083ea35515de3c73e3d854ad
The assumption that let the NSA get away with mass surveillance was that it would only be weaponized against the people at the bottom of the shitty technology adoption curve: brown people, mostly in other countries. The Snowden revelations made it clear that these were just the beginning, and sure enough, more than a decade later, we have data-brokers sucking up billions in cop kickbacks to enable warrantless surveillance, while virtually following people to abortion clinics, churches, and protests. Mass surveillance is chugging its way up the shitty tech adoption curve with no sign of stopping.
Like Little Brother, The Bezzle is intended as a kind of virtual flythrough of what life is like further down on that curve – a way for readers who have too much agency to be in the crosshairs of a company like Viapath or Avently right now to wake up before that kind of technology comes for them, and to inspire them to take up the cause of the people further down the curve who are mired in it.
The Bezzle is an intense book, but it's also a very fun story – just like Little Brother. It's a book that lays bare the internal technical workings of so many scams, from multi-level marketing to real-estate investment trusts, from music royalty theft to prison-tech, in the course of an ice-cold revenge plot that keeps twisting to the very last page.
It'll drop in six days. I hope you'll check it out:
https://us.macmillan.com/books/9781250865878/thebezzle

On Personal InfoSec
Been awhile since I've had one of these posts but I figure with all that's going on in the world it's time to make another one of these posts and get some stuff out there for people. A lot of the information I'm going to go over you can find here:
So if you'd like to just click the link and ignore the rest of the post that's fine, I strongly recommend checking out the Privacy Guides.
Browsers:
There's a number to go with but for this post going forward I'm going to recommend Firefox. I know that the Privacy Guides lists Brave and Safari as possible options but Brave is Chrome based now and Safari has ties to Apple. Mullvad is also an option but that's for your more experienced users so I'll leave that up to them to work out.
Browser Extensions:
uBlock Origin: content blocker that blocks ads, trackers, and fingerprinting scripts. Notable for being the only ad blocker that still works on Youtube.
Privacy Badger: Content blocker that specifically blocks trackers and fingerprinting scripts. This one will catch things that uBlock doesn't catch but does not work for ads.
Facebook Container: "but I don't have facebook" you might say. Doesn't matter, Meta/Facebook still has trackers out there in EVERYTHING and this containerizes them off away from everything else.
Bitwarden: Password vaulting software, don't trust the password saving features of your browsers, this has multiple layers of security to prevent your passwords from being stolen.
ClearURLs: Allows you to copy and paste URL's without any trackers attached to them.
VPN:
Note: VPN software doesn't make you anonymous, no matter what your favorite youtuber tells you, but it does make it harder for your data to be tracked and it makes it less open for whatever network you're presently connected to.
Mozilla VPN: If you get the annual subscription it's ~$60/year and it comes with an extension that you can install into Firefox.
Proton VPN: Has easily the most amount of countries serviced, can take cash payments, and does offer port forwarding.
Email Provider:
Note: By now you've probably realized that Gmail, Outlook, and basically all of the major "free" e-mail service providers are scraping your e-mail data to use for ad data. There are more secure services that can get you away from that but if you'd like the same storage levels you have on Gmail/Outlook.com you'll need to pay.
Proton Mail: Secure, end-to-end encrypted, and fairly easy to setup and use. Offers a free option up to 1gb
Tuta: Secure, end-to-end encrypted, been around a very long time, and offers a free option up to 1gb.
Email Client:
Thunderbird if you're on Windows or Linux
Apple Mail if you're on macOS
Cloud Storage:
Proton Drive: Encrypted cloud storage from the same people as Proton Mail.
Tresorit: Encrypted cloud storage owned by the national postal service of Switzerland. Received MULTIPLE awards for their security stats.
Peergos: decentralized and open-source, allows for you to set up your own cloud storage, but will require a certain level of expertise.
Microsoft Office Replacements:
LibreOffice: free and open-source, updates regularly, and has the majority of the same functions as base level Microsoft Office.
OnlyOffice: cloud-based, free, and open source.
Chat Clients:
Note: As you've heard SMS and even WhatsApp and some other popular chat clients are basically open season right now. These are a couple of options to replace those.
Signal: Provides IM and calling securely and encrypted, has multiple layers of data hardening to prevent intrusion and exfil of data.
Molly (Android OS only): Alternative client to Signal. Routes communications through the TOR Network.
Briar: Encrypted IM client that connects to other clients through the TOR Network, can also chat via wifi or bluetooth.
Now for the last bit, I know that the majority of people are on Windows or macOS, but if you can get on Linux I would strongly recommend it. pop_OS, Ubuntu, and Mint are super easy distros to use and install. They all have very easy to follow instructions on how to install them on your PC and if you'd like to just test them out all you need is a thumb drive to boot off of to run in demo mode.
If you game through Steam their Proton emulator in compatibility mode works wonders, I'm presently playing a major studio game that released in 2024 with no Linux support on it and once I got my drivers installed it's looked great. There are some learning curves to get around, but the benefit of the Linux community is that there's always people out there willing to help.
I hope some of this information helps you and look out for yourself, it's starting to look scarier than normal out there.

Hi! I hope you're having a lovely day. I was watching some "Avengers" movies (god, I can’t stop watching the one called "war" or something like that), and out of nowhere, I started imagining—how would the characters from Twisted Wonderland react to a Yuu (preferably male) who’s an Avenger? I was thinking you could take inspiration from different characters(? I mean, maybe a Wonder Woman (in this case, Wonder Man? 😓) dating Riddle, and Leona with Black Panther?? Sorry if I’m not making much sense. 😭😭
Riddle Rosehearts × Wonder Man!Yuu
Powers: Super strength, flight, indestructible bracers conjured from magic. Noble, principled, and terrifyingly efficient in battle. Vibe: You’re basically a walking justice manifesto wrapped in charisma and polite sass.
Riddle tries to scold you for breaking school rules, but the moment you disarm a rogue monster from the Ghost Camera event with your bare hands, he’s sputtering.
“That’s... not how we duel at NRC, Yuu! And also—did you just catch a bolt of lightning?!”
You: “You said to handle it without causing damage to the courtyard.”
He becomes lowkey obsessed with your sense of justice. You believe in rules because they protect the weak—his heart does a full 360. The Heartslabyul students are so confused when Riddle starts blushing every time you call him “your little rose.”
Leona Kingscholar × Panther King!Yuu
Inspired by Black Panther Powers: Superhuman strength and reflexes, enhanced senses, vibranium-clawed gauntlets, ancestral magic from a hidden jungle kingdom. Vibe: Calm, strategic, and a bit smug, with deep loyalty to your people.
Leona thinks you’re just another high-and-mighty noble at first—until you outmaneuver him during a Spelldrive match without even sweating. The audacity.
Leona: “Don’t think I didn’t see that fake-out. You trying to show me up?” You: “Just making sure the prince gets his claws sharpened.”
He finds you infuriating and attractive in equal measure. He respects strength, but he adores subtlety—and you’re both. You challenge his laziness and show him what it means to lead with grace. Over time, your quiet authority makes him soften (just a little).
Azul Ashengrotto × Iron Mage!Yuu
Inspired by Iron Man/Doctor Strange fusion Powers: Tech genius, magical artifact wielder, portal manipulation. A dramatic cape. Vibe: Snarky, charming, and too smart for your own good.
You run circles around Azul in business negotiations and smugly open portals like it’s child’s play. He pretends to be annoyed, but really? He’s obsessed. You two are the “too powerful for anyone else” power couple. Everyone is scared of you both.
Azul: “I’d offer you a contract, but I imagine you’d find a loophole I didn’t even write yet.” You: “Oh, Azul, darling—I invented loopholes.”
The Lounge thrives with your tech support. You built Jade and Floyd magical espresso machines. You made Azul a holographic customer tracker. He’s in love and terrified.
🐉 Malleus Draconia × Stormbringer!Yuu
Inspired by Thor Powers: Weather control, god-like durability, storm-born magic. Can summon storms with your voice. Vibe: Regal, intense, a bit dramatic—but charmingly clueless about Earth things.
Malleus stares in awe the first time you call down a thunderstorm during a Night Raven blackout. You stand in the middle of the storm, eyes glowing, and then say:
“Sorry, I was cold. Thought I’d make some lightning to warm up.”
He finds you fascinating. You're powerful in a way that’s natural to him. The others fear him, but you match his energy—no fear, only wonder. You talk to him like an equal, even when sparking with raw magic.
You two take midnight flights together, him with bat wings, you surfing clouds like a celestial.
Vil Schoenheit × Vision!Yuu (aka “Aesthetic Android” BF)
Inspired by: Vision Powers: Intangibility, flight, hyper-intelligence, and emotional evolution through data and experience. Elegant af.
Vil didn’t know what to expect when Crowley introduced you as a “foreign exchange student from a distant… timeline.” You glide into the room, composed, graceful, and glowing faintly with cosmic energy. You analyze NRC like a poetic computer:
“The beauty of this place… is data arranged into visual harmony.”
Vil's ego was ready to scoff—until you proceeded to walk through a wall, save a Dorm Spelldrive match mid-game by phasing through the field, and then compliment his foundation by comparing it to nebula shimmer.
You’re logical, well-spoken, and slowly learning emotion—especially love. Vil finds himself constantly surprised when you’ll suddenly say things like:
“Statistically speaking, I find myself recalibrating around you, Vil. I believe this is what humans call… affection?”
He is NOT prepared for a boyfriend who phases through mirrors to bring him fresh tea during spa days. But he adores it. You remind him beauty isn’t just visual—it’s emotional, too.
Idia Shroud × Spider-Man!Yuu (aka “Neighborhood Chaos Gremlin” BF)
Inspired by: Peter Parker / Spider-Man Powers: Wall-crawling, web-slinging, spider senses, chaotic hero energy. Vibe: Nerdy, snarky, and charmingly awkward.
Idia has never met anyone who can beat him at games AND do backflips off the ceiling. You’re the only one in the entire school who can sneak up on him—by hanging upside down outside his window and tapping on the glass with a webbed hand.
“Hey babe! Wanna skip class and swing around the school? I found a cool mossy rock!”
He thought you were a hallucination at first. “There’s no way a real person just thwipped onto my gaming chair.” But then you offered him a home-coded arcade cabinet with your webs spun into LED wiring.
You two bond over tech, coding, and being the most awkwardly brilliant people in the room. You call each other dumb nicknames like “WiFi Warrior” and “Web Head,” and you cling to walls during romantic conversations just because you can.
When you get serious (like, defending him from a magical cyber attack), your goofy nature flips into “calm hero mode,” and Idia melts.
Kalim Al-Asim × Captain Sunshine!Yuu (aka “Yuu Rogers”)
Inspired by: Captain America Powers: Enhanced strength, speed, leadership instincts, a shield made from sunsteel. Glowing hope incarnate. Vibe: Sunshine protector who makes inspirational speeches and also loves hugs.
Kalim was already sunshine personified—but then YOU showed up.
You caught a falling chandelier on your first day with one hand, told Crowley “with all due respect, sir,” and then helped mop the floor. Kalim was starstruck.
“Waitwaitwait—are you a hero hero?! Like—defends the innocent and jumps off buildings and helps little kittens cross the street?! THAT’S SO COOL!!”
You both get excited about the smallest things—buffet tables, flower crowns, matching outfits. You're a “power couple” in the most literal way.
You give heroic speeches and Kalim claps every time. You protect others without hesitation. And when he gets overwhelmed? You kneel down and smile softly:
“You shine so bright, Kalim. Let me shield you when you need it.”
He’s sobbing. Jamil is quietly begging you to not encourage his chaos. You do anyway.

U leave all your data with the android and the punk deviates, runs away and starts making purchases on your credit card cuz your lazy ass forgot to call the bank and whatever CL client system to unlink the android from your bank acc and change your credentials for purchases.
It's pray the fact deviancy disconnect a lot of "trackers" to the point the android ain't got nothing about u anymore simply cuz it ain't there stored at all.
But, c'mon, would be so funny if Kara (after killing Todd) could still access his shit, even if the dude got hundred debts. Ofc u expect a game set in 2038 where androids can interact with EVERYTHING is secure. The problem is the fact people, for some reason, let 'em guard down about the possibility of a rogue factor - and how this hypothetical rogue factor, not hacker attack, could impact on things. So I keep my 👀 on how things would work in DBH universe considering we ain't got no fucking clue (concrete ones) about how shit really is after Act 1.

8 Au-gust: Robots and Androids - Part 9
Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, Part 5, Part 6, Part 7, Part 8 , Part 9, Part 10
Rating: Mature Relationship: Steve Harrington/Eddie Munson WT: Android Steve Harrington, Wanted Criminal Eddie Munson, Temporary Character death [Steve], surgery on the android Words: 2340
Getting off the building is incredibly easy, no one pays attention to a dirty boy while there is an android that crashed to the ground.
Eddie forces himself not to look at the crash site and keeps following the tracker.
He steals a black cloak, uses the hood to hide his face, and keeps following the tracker, he has no fucking idea who Stevie might have called but surely is better than being taken back to prison to wait for his death sentence.
He has conflicted sentiments about the android. Not only did S.T.E.V.E. saved his life two times in a row, but he is also half-human. Or at least he has some human memories buried deep in his codex and he doesn't even know. It seems cruel that he died like that, without knowing any of that.
Eddie shakes his head. He is not dead. He is a machine, and a machine can’t die.
But on every screen in town, he keeps seeing the video of the android that falls from the building and then crashes to the ground.
In the last image, the android’s eyes are open but there is no light behind them while he lies on the ground like a fallen angel.
Eddie is not looking at those images. He is not thinking about the android. He is walking toward salvation. Or at least that’s what he hopes he is doing.
“Boy.”
He knows that voice, Eddie turns and sees Owens hidden behind a corner.
He runs toward him, finding his companions with him.
“Never leave like that again!” Owens scolds him, while he hugs him “Are you ready to go home?”
“But how?!!”
“Someone made sure we received the message. We were ready to assault the prison to get to you but our informant told us that you had help from the inside and that we should have just waited for you to come. Now let's go, the quicker we leave the lesser are the chances that we are going to get killed.”
“There is someone…” Eddie says, stopping the man.
“Another captive?”
“An android.”
Owens glares at him “We don’t help android Eddie. We fight them! Don’t you remember?”
“But he is special!”
“I don’t care how special he is…”
“He is half-human!”
Owens turns toward Eddie “What?!”
Listen I can’t explain it to you but we can’t let them thorn him to pieces!”
“And what do you want us to do?!”
“The town is still in chaos. He crashed on the ground so they are sending someone to recoil his parts. If we could get there and steal the transportation and its cargo we could take him away.”
Owens shakes his head “Eddie I’m not going to risk everyone’s life because you got involved with a fucking android!”
“He saved my life. Twice.” Eddie protests.
“He would have had his motifs.”
“I can't leave him. Please. He was the help that I had from the inside!”
Gareth gets closer to them “The android helped you escape?!”
Eddie nods, and Gareth turns toward Ownes “We need to help him.”
“That’s madness!”
“Our entire mission is madness, Owens, but if we can have an android on our side maybe he could help us!” Gareth exclaims.
“What if he was only working to gain Eddie’s trust? What if it’s just a trap, uh?”
“It’s not. Please trust me on this one!” Eddie begs.
“If you get in trouble we will not be able to save you, you know that?” Owens asks seriously, and when Eddie nods he finally agrees “So, what’s the plan?”
***
The plan is that Owens will drive them as close as possible to the crash site and then Gareth and Eddie will try to steal the transportation with S.T.E.V.E.’s body and they will drive to the interchange station where they will get on Owens' ship.
“Fifteen minutes. Fifteen minutes and then we are leaving, with or without you.”
Eddie nods, hiding his face with the hood.
“We’ll be there.”
“Good luck, son.”
Eddie and Gareth leave and they blend in as well as they can.
“Vecna.” Gareth whispers and Eddie sees it, kneeling next to Stevie and saying something to the other androids that lift the body. One of S.T.E.V.E.'s arms is definitely broken but they can’t see exactly how damaged the android is.
Eddie turns toward Gareth “Get on the van. And be ready to drive like a bat out of hell when I tell you.”
“Are you sure? We can still go back to the ship and…”
“This is important, Gareth. I swear!”
The boy nods and moves toward the van. Now Eddie has to wait for one of the androids to put the body inside and then get in the back of the van with Stevie.
Easy right?
He moves closer and closer, feigning to be a curious citizen but paying attention to hide his face until he is just a few feet from the van.
He sees Gareth open the van and gets to the driver seat, thank god they all know how to hot and wire!
When the android leaves the body on the stretcher inside the van Eddie smashes the van door against the android and the android, surprised, falls to the ground.
He gets inside quickly, screaming “Go! Go! Go!” and Gareth starts to drive as fast as he can.
Thank god Owens is still waiting for them.
“I told you fifteen minutes!” he yells, but he is still there.
They push the stretcher inside the ship and quickly escape.
“Hold on to something! We are going to jump!” he announces.
“But we are too close to the surface!” someone tries to protest, but the familiar knot in the stomach tells Eddie all he needs to know.
They are jumping.
***
There is only one person that Eddie trusts to repair Stevie.
“Are you sure that the coordinates are the right ones? There is nothing on that planet.”
“There is a small human outpost. I’m sure. I have been there before.”
Owens looks at him with uncertainty but in the end, he nods and puts the coordinate on their ship.
Even if the landing is better than the last one, the welcome is worse.
Hopper, wearing a thermal suit, is threatening to blow up the entire ship, when Eddie gets out of the ship, his hands in the air “It’s Stevie! It needs help!””
As soon as they get to the human outpost Dustin and El are waiting for them.
“Oh god. Oh god. What the fuck happened?!” Dustin screams, trying to map every broken piece in Steve’s body.
“He fell… He fell from a building.”
“How the fuck did he… oh no. Tell me he didn’t fly.”
Eddie lowers his eyes.
“Fuck! I told him! I told him that he couldn’t fly anymore! Shit, shit, shit! I have to run a full diagnostic. Maybe we can save his personality chip and move it to another android.”
“No.” El says, quietly.
“Have you seen the damage El? I don’t think we can repair him! We need… I don’t know what we need but definitely more than we got!”
El puts a hand on Dustin’s shoulder “We can do it, Dustin. We have to.”
Dustin shakes his head, trying to clear his mind, and then looks at Eddie “I will need all the help I can get.”
***
Eddie knows a lot about androids. He knows how they work, and where the weakest points are, but he has never seen an android so damaged as S.T.E.V.E.
“You can fix him, right?” he asks Dustin, feeling unsure.
“Why do you care? You are the one that kept calling him a tin can.”
He doesn’t want to explain to Dustin what he discovered, not if they are not able to repair him.
“The arm is gone, we need to replace it entirely.” Dustin declares, removing the screw that keeps the arm tight to the chest.
“What about his chip and his code?”
“Why do you care?” Dustin asks again “You are hiding something and I’m working blind here. So help me if you really want to fix him!”
“He might have some human memories encrypted somewhere in his code!” Eddie blurts out.
Dustin’s sight goes to El, who simply nods.
“You knew and you didn’t tell me?”
“I had my suspicions.” she replies while holding part of Steve’s chest open for Dustin.
“I swear to god… you and your fucking secrets…” he mumbles.
Dustin keeps working with a little cutting torch, trying to reconnect the circuits, and suddenly S.T.E.V.E.’s eyes open wide.
“Eddie…” he calls confused.
“Hi there.”
“What?” he asks, trying to move.
“You have to stay still. Ok, Stevie? You got hurt but Dustin is going to fix you in no time.
Steve sees his chest open.
“Don’t look at that, look at me.” Eddie says, taking his metal hand into his “Keep your eyes on me, ok big boy?”
“Big boy?” he asks, confused.
“Yeah… it’s a nickname, you know? A little name you give to people you care about…”
“People you care…” S.T.E.V.E.’s eyes turn black for a moment while a buzzing sound feels the air.
“Boy… boy… boy… big boy… big… boy… pretty… pretty… pretty boy…” S.T.E.V.E. murmurs like a litany.
“What the fuck is going on?” Eddie yells.
Every sensor is beeping.
“We are losing him.” Dustin replies without stopping to work on Steve.
“You have to turn him off.” El declares calmly.
“We don’t know if he will be able to restart him if we turn him off. We could lose all the data.”
“It is overheating. You have to disconnect the battery, Dustin. You have to do it now.”
The android is still babbling words without sense. His plastic eyes turn toward Eddie “I love you…” he whispers, and then Dustin disconnects the battery.
***
For a moment everything stills.
“Did he say…?”
Eddie is looking astonished at the android: S.T.E.V.E.'s head is still turned toward him, his mouth half open as he was interrupted while he was speaking.
“Fix him.” Eddie snarls.
“Look, Eddie, I like him too but…”
“Fix him! You have to fix him!” he yells, approaching Dustin in a threatening way.
El let S.T.E.V.E.’s chest down gently and gets between the two.
“Don’t threaten him.”
“He must fix him!”
“He will do all he can to fix S.T.E.V.E. but you can’t ask the impossible from Dustin. S.T.E.V.E. would not want that.”
“I don’t give a fuck about what he would want or not! He has to fix him.”
The air is full of tension between the three of them.
“I can try to work on him while he is disconnected, and then try to connect him back. But if I say that is not working we stop and I don’t care if you are going to kill me or what. I will not put my people in peril.” Dustin says, sounding immediately older than he is.
Eddie stops. Is that what he is doing? Threatening the humans to save an android? How the fuck did that happen?
Eddie shakes his head “I’m sorry… I don’t know what happened to me. You are right, obviously. Do the best that you can to repair him, ok?”
Dustin nods, and El helps him.
He is still with his arms inside S.T.E.V.E. when he looks at Eddie “Do you think you are thinking clearly enough to help?” Eddie nods “Good. Because I need more hands.”
***
They work on the android for hours, while Eleven keeps the time.
“If he stays disconnected more than six hours he is not going to restart.”
Eddie nods, he knows that. He used that technique on some androids to get rid of them.
“Time?” Dustin asks.
“Four hours forty-seven minutes, fifty-two seconds.”
“Good. We still have time. I fixed everything I could on his chest, now we have to work on his back. I think we must take away the engines, they are too unstable.”
“But you need to put something to patch his back.
“We could leave space for some wings. He would still be able to fly for a little distance.”
“It would take too much time, Dustin.” El declares.
“What do you propose?”
“Close him. Maybe add more plates to protect his inside.”
“Patch him up, Dustin. Enough to keep him working. We will talk about the specifics later on.”
Dustin nods and takes some  new metal plates to cover the huge hole that Steve has in his shoulder “He will not be balanced without his arm and his engines.”
“What do you mean?”
“He will have to learn how to walk. I don’t know if its program is flexible enough to adjust to this kind of change.
“What does that mean?” Eddie asks, confused.
“That he will not be a hunter anymore.”
“And how is this a bad thing?”
“Eddie. If he is not a hunter what do you think will happen to him when he leaves this outpost?”
But Eddie has an entire plan that can work only if the stupid tin can keep working.
“Time?”
“Five hours Thirty four minutes, twelve seconds.”
“We have to close.”
“But it’s not complete.” Eddie complains.
“No, but I need time to see if it turns on or not. Help me close him.”
Fuck.
They seal all they can and then Dustin gets the little cable that connects the battery to S.T.E.V.E.’s central system.
“Ready?”
Eddie nods, and Dustin connects it.
For a moment nothing happens.
Then, slowly, S.T.E.V.E. opens his eyes. Eddie is ready to cry with joy when S.T.E.V.E. says a name he was not waiting for...
“Billy?”

"The alert system finally gives Android users a convenient way to see if a rogue AirTag has been placed in their belongings or car to track their location. In December 2021, Apple released an Android app called Tracker Detect to address the problem, but it requires users to proactively download it from the Google Play Store and then manually click the scanning function.
In contrast, Google's built-in alert system is designed to "automatically" detect rogue AirTags around you and display an alert on your phone, which can be clicked for more information."

Short version of the character concept; she comes from a far future and distant civilization. She is an advanced artificial intelligence / android that was created to infiltrate and help destroy humanity. (Think a mix between Terminator and evil! Fifth Element type in terms of creation & technology.) She rebels and manages to escape, taking with her all the prototypes of the nanites & data used to create her in an attempt to preserve herself and to keep from being used as a weapon of mass destruction. She made use of an transportation device that moved her through time and space to a randomly generated location / time and ends up with her landing in -whatever- universe your character is set in. She attempted to sabotage the teleportation device so that it could not be used to track her.
You can find some basic run down / rambling thoughts on her abilities and technology and skills HERE.
Her chosen name is Elizabeth Rose Slade. (Tabitha Rosa Slate was her first chosen name, a play on the words tabula rasa, but she has since modified it to something she thinks sounds more natural.)
