Mostra Museo Salvatore Ferragamo 2006

Appalachia, Mon Amour
[Note: there are more extensive lists out there, but through personal criteria, this is what I came up with.]
Map of Appalachia:
Tumblr media
Frank X Walker, born in Danville, Kentucky, coined the term "Affrilachia" to refer to African-Americans in the region and give a name to their experiences. He also co-founded the Affrilachian Poets. He offers educational training on his website.
Here is a list of his books. These include known titles like Love House, Affrilachia, and Black Box.
Lisa Alther, from Kingsport, Tennessee, is a prolific fiction writer whose work often contains lesbian and bisexual characters. Several titles are linked below.
Other Women, Kinflicks, Swan Song.
Harriette Simpson Arnow was born in Wayne County, Kentucky. She worked as a teacher and principal in rural Appalachia for two years. She would go on to write her first novel in 1936, drawing on her experiences in the region. Future works would carry story tones of moving and fraught lives which would strike cords with Appalachian readers.
Hunter's Horn, The Dollmaker, The Weedkiller's Daughter.
Pinckney Benedict is a short-story writer, playwright, and novelist. He was born in Greenbriar County, West Virginia. His work is strongly influenced by his Appalachian background. His first novel, Dogs of God, was published in 1995 and he has gone on to publish three short story collections.
Dogs of God, Town Smokes, Wrecking Yard.
Harry M. Caudill was born in Whitesburg, Kentucky. Caudill was a World War 2 veteran critical of the approaches taken in Appalachian mining. He was also critical of the power wielded by northeastern investors in these mines. In his later years he became a eugenicist, believing William Shockley's theory of dysgenics (the idea that "unintelligent" people weaken a race over time). He published multiple books concerning law and his home area of the Cumberlands Plateau.
Night Comes to the Cumberlands, The Watches of The Night, A Darkness at Dawn.
Wilma Dykeman grew up in Buncombe County, North Carolina. She married her husband, James R. Stokely Jr, two months after meeting him. This occurred shortly after her graduation from Northwestern University. She authored multiple novels and family epics, tracing decisions through time. The Wilma Dykeman Award exists to promote writers discussing connection, Appalachia, and religion. Urban News provides support for writers of color.
The Tall Woman, The Far Family, Return the Innocent Earth.
Denise Giardina was born in Bluefield, West Virginia. She grew up in the Black Wolf coal mining camp located in McDowell County. Her family's survival was heavily dependent on the mine's prosperity. Politically active and frequently writing about Appalachian labor conflicts, she experienced clashes with the superiors of an Episcopalian she attempted to lead in West Virginia over her labor views.
Storming Heaven, The Unquiet Earth.
Homer Hadley Hickam Jr was born in Coalwood, West Virginia. He is a Vietnam War veteran, author, and former NASA engineer. His 1998 memoir Rocket Boys was the basis for the 1999 movie October Sky. He has a diverse body of work. His Coalwood series is about Appalachia and consists of memoirs about his hometown.
Rocket Boys, The Coalwood Way, Sky of Stone.
Silas House was born in Corbin, Kentucky, and grew up in nearby Laurel County. He also spent much of his childhood in Leslie County. He is one of the most prominent voices of LGBTQ+ Appalachians and Southerners in Southern literature.
Clay's Quilt, A Parchment of Leaves, The Coal Tattoo.
Sharryn McCrumb is a Southern writer. Born in Wilmington, North Carolina, she is best known for her Appalachian Ballad series, which weaves folklore in with historical events.
If I Ever Return, Pretty Peggy-O, The Hangman's Beautiful Daughter, She Walks These Hills.
Mary Noailles Murfree was born near Murfreesboro, Tennessee on a cotton plantation. She is considered to be Appalachia's first significant female writer. Her work does reinforce negative stereotypes of the region and the influence of her social standing on her work is notable. She wrote under the pen name Charles Egbert Craddock.
The Windfall, In the Tennessee Mountains, In the Clouds.
Karl Dewey Myers was born in Tucker County, West Virginia. He was physically disabled, never walked, and required a special typewriter to write. He was denied formal education, resulting in him being self-taught. His first poetry collection was The Quick Years, analysis of which exists in literary journals.
The Quick Years. Little is written about his second poetry collection, Cross and Crown, published shortly before his death in 1951.
Breece D'J Pancake was a short-story writer born in Milton, West Virginia. The location is the inspiration for his multiple short stories, published in The Atlantic Monthly and other periodicals during his lifetime. He passed due to suicide at age 26. Chuck Palahniuk claims him as an influence.
Stories of Breece D'J Pancake (collected short stories), Trilobites, Time and Again.
Ann Pancake was born in Richmond, Virginia. Her family has strong roots in West Virginia and Appalachia. She grew up in Summersville, West Virginia. Her family includes filmmaker Chet Pancake and actor Sam Pancake. She is a distant relative of the writer Breece Pancake. Writing stories centering rural poverty and the historical roots of poverty in general. She teaches Appalachian fiction and environmental criticism. She recently resigned from West Virginia University in protest of budget cuts.
Strange as This Weather Has Been, Me and My Daddy Listen to Bob Marley (short stories and novellas), Given Ground.
Carter Sickels grew up in Ohio and, as an adult, moved around to various cities. His work captures a homesickness for the place one grew up while balancing any complicated feelings one may have about the area. An interview on the subject by Megan Kruse can be found here.
The Evening Hour, The Prettiest Star.
Hubert Skidmore was a writer born Webster Springs, West Virginia, his twin brother Hobert Skidmore was also a novelist. He is best known for his social protest novel Hawk's Nest. He died in a house fire in 1946.
A list of his other books can be found here.
Crystal Wilkinson was born in Hamilton, Ohio. She is a member of the Affrilachia collective. With experience in media and public relations, her transition to poet and professor of creative writing was smooth. She is the first Black woman to be Kentucky's Poet Laureate, a position she was appointed to in 2021.
Praisesong for Kitchen Ghosts, Blackberries, Blackberries (poetry collection), The Birds of Opulence.
Jim Webb was born in Jenkins, Kentucky, he was an Appalachian poet, writer, and essayist. He was a founding member of the Southern Appalachian Writers Cooperative. Transcriptions of the interviews with founding members can be found here. He spent three decades managing the radio show, "Ridin' Around Listenin' to the Radio With Wiley Quixote", a literary persona he created of a mountain character critical of strip-mining for coal and used self-deprecating humor. Much of his literary output has been destroyed due to three house fires.
Radio component of Appalashop.
SPECIAL FEATURE — CHILDREN'S LIT
Rebecca Caudill was born in Cumberland, Kentucky. She graduated from Wesleyan College in Georgia and received a degree in international relations from Vanderblit University. Her stories about Appalachia are filled with warmth and focused on the pioneer era of the 19th and 20th centuries. She loved the culture of Appalachia.
A list of her books is available here.
Cynthia Rylant was born in Hopewell, West Virginia. She was sent to live with her maternal grandparents in Coal Ridge, West Virgina after her parents divorced. She eventually moved back in with her mother in Beaver, West Virginia. After university, she worked as a librarian and became acquainted with children's books, something absent in her own childhood. She has written dozens of books for children and young readers.
A list of her books is available here.

Week 4: Reality shows in the age of social media
According to Deller (2019), the concept of reality TV has always been perceived as how entertainment content is recorded in a real setting involving individuals from real life. This is also one of the paramount reasons why viewers feel attracted to this type of content, although they claim to dislike it or call it superficial and nonsense.
From only through voting messages and ratings, audience engagement nowadays can also be observed through social media, thus expressed under more diverse formats and directions. As a result, reality show producers have been adapting to the situation by adding details in the scripts that have the potential to drive discussions. For example, the America Next Top Model even has a list of controversial and cringeworthy moments collected by Business Insider (2022), in which the contestants were unwillingly put in contexts that evoked and exaggerated their extreme reactions. In contrast, people who refused to act wildly or keep a neutral attitude would be called mediocre or not a "view attractor".
Tumblr media
Source: Erin McDowell on Business Insider (2022)
Similarly, Kavka (2018) raised serious concerns in some British reality shows regarding the extent of ethical values for entertainment when witnessing the participants being forced to suffer through offensive experiences, supported by a term coined by Mark Andrejevic: "the lab rat quality of reality television" (2013). While those scandalous events are clearly perceived as scripted, they are still the motivation for the audience to follow the shows just to figure out how those uncommon conflicts would be solved. Besides simple amusement purposes, consumers place a higher demand on authenticity since the increase in artificial media production raises doubts about the plausibility of the value. (Rose and Wood, 2005) From another point of view, they prefer to be immersed in the blending of the factitious and the spontaneous, reflecting a complex negotiation of authentic and inauthentic elements in the shows. (Rose and Wood, 2005)
To sum up, reality show viewers are equally likely to favor stage-craft and imagination in producing genuine experiences as they were to rely on their personal lives. This preference implies their engaged and interactive role in the shows' pre-production and post-production processes since they would be the final consumers after all.

Top 10 Batman villains (EXcept the Joker)
So I want to talk about my favorite Batman villains EXCEPT the Joker, because while he is my favorite villain,I dont have much to say ,so lets give the other villains a spotlight
10.Ras Al Ghul
OK so Ra's is a weird villain, cause he stands out in Batmans rogues . "Weirdos and monsters" is what I think of when it comes to Bats villains, and Ra's isnt one of those .He's a centuries old terrorist who is a well intentioned extremist that runs a secret society who wants Bats to join his side in making the world a better place .I know some bat fans dont like him cause he sticks out so much, and I will admit yeah thats why he isnt higher.....But I like him,for me he is the "Things are serious" villain ,when Ra' s is involved you know things are going to go down
Tumblr media
9.Mr Freeze
A great concept that has been sadly poorly handled .I think as a villain on his own he's great, especially after he is reinvention in Batman The Animated Series. A man who can only live in the could, thus he is a cold man who has lost the one person he cares about .Not higher cause despite how tragic he is ,I feels there is only so much one can do with Freeze
Tumblr media
8.Mad Hatter
Ol Jervis Tetch ,a villain with a lot of potential.A brillaint yet VERY unhinged man with an obsession with Lewis Carols Wonderland books .I'll admit most of my love for this guy comes from media outside the comics, mainly Roddy Mcdowells performance in Batman the Animated Series (He is the villain of my favorite episode of that show) ,as in the comics he is hit and miss
Tumblr media
7.Penguin
OK ....So Penguin has taken a long time to grow on me ,but over the last few years I have grown fond of this gentleman gangster .I do like that among all the maniacs and literal monsters, the Penguin is a relatively sane normal guy who just looks distinct .I also think he works well both a sa main villain and as a side character ,like if Batman is chasing Two Face, have Batman go to the Iceberg Lounge to get info from the Penguin ,ol Oswald gives life to a story
Tumblr media
6.Clayface
Now there are a LOT of Clayfaces ,so to simplify things I am referring mostly to Basil Karlo AKA Clayface 1,an actor turned into a monster .I love the concept of a theatrical shapeshifter ,and he is a character that can be all at once funny ,tragic ......And above all horrific ,cause he is the villain I find the scariest , a intelligent killer eho happens to be a fleshy mud monster ,who can be anyone in a crowd
Tumblr media
5.Killer Croc
Man adaptations have botched this guy.A tragic villain,a man treated like a monster,so he became one.He is so alinated from human society he feels he must be an animal .I always have felt Batman Returns would be a better movie if Croc was the villain
Tumblr media
4.Scarecrow
Ah Dr Crane, another terrifying villain with great potential , obsessed with fear and performing "Experiments" on the populace ,theres a quality to him that makes him chilling
Tumblr media
3.Two Face
A former friend and allie of Bruce/Batman ,Harvey Dent is both scarred and a man with two personalities ,one good and one evil ,with every decision being based on the flip of his coin .One of the most tragic villains in the rogues gallery and one of Batmans most personal
Tumblr media
2.Catwoman
So like Joker I considered leaving her off the list ,but for a diffrent reason.....Shes not always a baddie . Hell most people know her more as a antihero / being Batmans love interest. At the same time thats why I like her,she walks the line between hero and villain .Theres this wonderful drama between her and batman due to their on and off romance and their diffrent moral codes
Tumblr media
1.The Riddler
A more brainy threat to Batman ,what I love about this guy is his ego ,he wants to prove he is the smartest guy in the room,as part of the fun for him is getting to gloat about his vastly superrior intellect..His main motivation is he wants attention While other villains are scary or tragic,I like Riddler cause he is just fun (THough I did love the scary take from the recent Batman film ) .Also I have seen people say that they tink Riddler might be a better arch nemesis for Batman then Joker, and I kind of agree to a point
Tumblr media
What are your top 10 Batman villains
@ariel-seagull-wings @amalthea9 @personofsinterest @marquisedemasque @professorlehnsherr-almashy @princesssarisa @metropolitan-mutant-of-ark@the-blue-fairie @lord-antihero @filmcityworld1

Super Best Ball: Assimilating Build Strategy, Part 2 "Productive Struggle"
Super Best Ball: Assimilating Build Strategy, Part 2 “Productive Struggle”
Productive Struggle (PS) is a natural contrast to the Win Now (WN) philosophy. The approach was coined by Ryan McDowell (Dynasty Blueprint Productive Struggle), and intended as a build strategy for sustained championship contention at the cost of immediate gratification. The base principles of PS are to invest in long-term, stable assets while fading aging production and fragility. This article…

5 Great Resources for Preparing for PM Interviews
Peace ya’ll, I decided to explore new PM opportunities a few months ago and sought out resources to help me study and prepare for PM interviews. Below are a few of my favorite resources that I used to prepare:
Websites
1. IGotAnOffer.com- This website is a great resource with sample questions from various product companies.
2. TryExponent - This online course covers typical sections of PM interviews for top tech companies. If you’re cheap like me you can skip the course and watch their youtube videos.
3. Lewis-Lin.com does a great job of breaking down how to answer tough PM interview questions. This is a great way to get the abbreviated version of tips from Lewis Lin’s book listed below.
Books
4. Decode & Conquer - Lewis C. Lin - An awesome resource with sample answers to example PM questions.
5. Cracking the PM Interview - by Gayle Laakmann McDowell & Jackie Bavaro - A thorough resource that covers the typical areas of product management that are assessed in interviews.
In terms of results, I received multiple offers from great companies after using these resources to study and strongly recommend them.
Full Disclosure: The book links are affiliate links so if you buy them I will get a few coins tossed my way. I did read these books though and honestly recommend them.

A face like a clenched fist
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Somewhere on Facebook a while back, I stumbled upon a photograph of basketball Hall of Famer Hal Greer. Every time his name is mentioned – Every. Single. Time. – I think about a description of him I heard long ago (from my brother? I can’t recall.)
Someone said Hal Greer had “a face like a clenched fist,” and the phrase has stuck with me for decades. I think it’s a great, and pretty accurate, description. I may have used it once or twice over the years to describe other people.
Now, I’ve started to wonder where the phrase came from. I mean, I love my brother and he’s really smart (I like to say he got all the brains in the family, and all I got was the looks, the hair and the money), but I don’t think he’s clever enough to have come up with that description.
So I started on a trip down the internet rat-hole. From a sports perspective, it appears sportswriter Jim Murray coined the phrase in the 1950s to describe hard-nosed New York Yankees outfielder Hank Bauer. It seems that almost all biographies of Bauer include the “clenched fist” description, so Bauer has more claim to it than Hal Greer, who played most of his career after Bauer retired as a player. Bauer even used the term to describe himself in a 1964 Sports Illustrated article.
My research also showed, however, that “face like a clenched fist” was applied to former Detroit Lions coach Wayne Fontes, Philadelphia Eagles Hall of Famer Chuck “Concrete Charlie” Bednarik, actor Malcolm McDowell,  the late Fox News chairman Roger Ailes, one-time Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir, and many, many more.
The earliest reference I could find was in a 1917 novel by H.G. Wells called “The Soul of a Bishop.” It’s the story of Lord Bishop Edward Scrope, who goes through a spiritual crisis and ends up quitting the Anglican Church. Scrope takes a drug and has a vision of “the Angel of God.” Scrope is questioned about the effects of the drug by a doctor. “And did things look as usual?” asked the doctor, protruding his knobby little face like a clenched fist.
That’s it. That’s the first use of the phrase I can find. If anyone can come up with an earlier reference, you’ll win my undying admiration (and nothing else).

LGBTQ pre-2000s terminology context (for people writing period fiction or reading older literature)
Transexual vs. Transgender:
A few weeks ago someone tried to argue with me that a 1990 comic book use of the word Transexual was offensive. I tried to explain that in 1990 this was the correct term.  They replied was “It doesn’t matter if it was acceptable back then! It’s still offensive!”   But... That’s the point, it was not the offensive term in 1990.  It was the ONLY term in 1990.
Okay, a little history.  The word “transgender” was only coined in the late 60s and when it was first coined it was by writer Virginia Prince.  Viriginia Prince was an early Trans rights activist and she coined it to distinguish between Trans people who do not have surgery (Transgender) vs. those that do (Transexual).  That was the original purpose.
Today there is no such distinction, all Trans people identify as Transgender.  But the term was rarely used for the first two to three decades of it’s existence. In fact in the 70s into the 90s most Trans people didn’t even know the word transgender, period.
In 1990 Transgender was NOT the correct term for most Trans people.  So it’s rather unfair to expect an author to magically know a term most Trans people didn’t even use yet.
Remember, the word meme actually dates back to the 70s.  No one expected its present day use and most people in the 80s and 90s would not have known the word.   Language is slow to change.   And in 1990 transgender simply wasn’t what it is today.   Most Trans people didn’t know the word and if they did it was for Virginia Prince’s use, not the modern use.
_______________________________________________
Bisexual and Panasexual:
Panasexual is a very new term.  It was coined by Freud, yes, but when he used it, it was not a kind word.  It was used to mean sexual attraction to ANYTHING and EVERYTHING, including animals and objects.  The modern usage of open to sexual attraction to any person is still very new in the grand scheme of the English language.  I’m talking “less than twenty years” new.
Bisexual originally did NOT mean ‘excluding Trans and non-binary” as some people have twisted it to mean.  “But… But it has ‘bi’ in it, which means two,  That’s binary.”
Back in the 90s we had a joking catchphrase of “I’m bisexual.  That means I’ll try anything once.” It wasn’t designed to exclude.  The term was only intended to include.  Because until bisexual got widespread use there was just homosexual and straight.
The word bisexual is less than a century old.  It’s still relatively new.  In the 1970s when Bowie told a reporter he was bisexual he had to clarify that it does NOT mean having both male and female reproductive organs. (see the book “David Bowie in his own words” published in 1983).
In the 1990s when Vincent Price’s daughter confronted Roddy McDowell about her father’s sexuality and said “Why didn’t you tell me my father was bisexual?” his response was “We didn’t know the term.  How can you deny something if you don’t know the word?”
I used to identify as bisexual.  Sometimes I still do.  Then it was panasexual.  Now I realize I’m probably demi Pan Romantic.  I identified as bisexual since the 90s and it’s only recently people have started to use it to mean “only binary attractions.”   And I’m so tired of having to explain the history of the word.  That’s the only real reason a lot of older bisexuals dropped the term, because we still remember when the word included everything.  And for many it still does.  We just get tired of explaining it.
__________________________________________
Dyke and it’s debatable reclamation:
Dyke was an offensive term for a lesbian.  So was Lesbo but Dyke was worse.   For many over the age of twenty there is still a sense of old wounds with the word dyke.
In recent years there has been an effort to reclaim the term but unfortunately a lot of TERFs (Trans exclusionary feminists) also latched onto using dyke with pride.  Just look at what comes up right here on Tumblr if you search the terms.  Some of them even denounce asexuals as “not counting.”
So I, personally, have mixed feelings about the use of dyke.  I can never tell if I’m talking to a lesbian woman just reclaiming an old slur or someone announcing their hatred of Trans woman and ace.  And mingle that with the memory of teenagehood insults not yet dulled and I’m just still not comfortable with the term, much as I wish I was.
_______________________________________________________
Other old school LGBTQ terms:
Let me emphasize first these ARE the terms used WITHIN the LGBTQ community.  Not used against / at them, but WITHIN.
Friends of Dorothy - Usually members of the armed forces who were in the closet. It meant you were gay.   The term’s origin had to do with Judy Garland being an early advocate of LGBTQ rights.  Judy played Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz.    Somewhere over the Rainbow - Used as an early gay Anthem because of Judly Garland’s status in the LGBTQ community. This is also part of why the pride flag is a rainbow.
Bambi - Feminine lesbian that prefers to cuddle rather than have actual sex.
Butch - Masculine, usually for lesbians. Beard - Wife of a gay man who is still in the closet and using his marriage status as part of his disguise as straight.
Bear - Masculine, hairy, and large gay man. Twink - Feminine and semi-androgynous gay man. Boston marriage (old) - Two women living together as husband and wife, dates back to the nineteenth century.  Formerly acceptable:  Fag hag - I never liked this one but it was a term for a straight woman who was friends with, or supportive of gay men.  You can hear its use in an episode of Will and Grace.  It was meant to be reclaimed but it still feels derogatory to me as if you want to shame the allies.  Formerly acceptable:  Transvestite  - No longer favorable.  This term was used for people who chose gender nonconforming fashions.   Usually a man who dressed as a woman but still identified as a man.  Cross-dresser was also once acceptable.  But both terms have fallen out of favor.   There was a time though that this was the correct term. Transvestite is not to be confused with Transexual (today Transgender).   It was specifically in regard to clothing.
Queen - Can be used for flamboyant gay man but mostly short for drag queen and often used for someone who identifies as she / her while in feminine clothing and he / him when not (at average usually preferring the he / him pronouns and treating the queen part as a sometimes aspect of their identity).
King - Reversal of Queen.
Post will be edited as necessary.

"If you woke up this morning, then you have another chance."
My grandmother used to say that all the time. She never explained what the second chance was for or why. In hindsight I saw that it was a blanket statement that covered anything. Get personal with it and think of it like this: "God woke me up this morning. He's given me another chance to do what He's asked of me" or "God allowed me to wake up this morning so I can try and mend my broken relationship with xxxx.) I like to look at it like this: "Why did God allow me to get out of bed this morning? Why has He gifted me another day on earth? What is my deliberate mission that He wants me to do today? What is the thing that He's keeping me alive to do?"
I'd like to get personal and intimate for just a minute. I've been blessed beyond belief with chance after chance, not only with sobriety, but life in general. Relationships that were lost because of my selfish addictions are being restored. My relationship with God is being restored. Since I began my walk with Christ, He's had me preaching from the pulpit, crying at the alter and listening from the pews. He's had me involved in things that I never would have done on my own. I've worn many titles and been called lots of things. Things like dopehead, drunk, racist, scumbag, piece of shxt, klansman, felon, sexist, violent, hate monger, no good, skinhead etc. Titles you don't want to put on a resume. I embrace the fact that I have one true title now: "A Child of the King."
I have this cool little box in my office. It's got some sentimental things in it. It has a few tie tacks I was given for production and safety awards, challenge coins from both the military and companies I've worked with offshore, old hunting licenses and federal and state duck stamps. There's patches, a small pocket knife that my uncle carried while he was beating the crap out of the Nazis at Monte Cassino, and some of my father's Air Force and Masonic stuff. There are a few more things in there. Those are the ones I'd to share.
Each one of those coin like pieces of metal are called sobriety chips. They are Alcoholic Anonymous awards given for different lengths of clean time. Each one represents a second chance that God gave me to stay clean. If you look closely, you'll see several shiny silver ones. Those are 24 hour chips. You're given that if you've been clean for one day and night. In my opinion, it's the most important chip to receive. If you look close enough you'll see that I have more of those than any other. Back then I was very stubborn about recovery, and in some ways I still am.
I have gotten clean and relapsed so many times that it's hard to count. But after each one, my heart was screaming " I DON'T LIKE THIS AND I DO NOT WANT TO DO THIS ANYMORE." God would hear the screams and step in to intervene. As long as I had God filling the void in my heart, I was successful. But my disease (who I like to refer to as Satan) would whisper "I'm proud of you. Look how far you have come. Look how good you feel now. Look at all the great things you are doing. Look at everyone telling you what a good job you've done. Everyone has put you on this pedestal because you deserve to be there. Look at all the people you're helping. You accomplished this all by yourself without the help of anyone. And all this time you thought you needed God!"
Cunning, baffling and powerful. That's what the disease of addiction is. I don't know of any other ailment man can have that constantly tries to convince you that you aren't sick. The apostle Paul talked of a thorn in his flesh. He said it was a messenger from Satan that was sent to buffet (strike repeatedly) him. Theologians have argued that passage up and down as to exactly what that thorn was. I can only talk with certainty about my own thorn. Addiction. My addictions remind me that the enemy is right around the corner, waiting and watching. For every millisecond that I don't fall for his trap, God's glory shines through.
When God commissioned me to start doing recovery work in McDowell County, I was pretty sure he had picked the wrong dude. I was by far the LEAST qualified person to do it. How was I to help others when I constantly have World War three going on between my ears? Why didn't He get someone who knew what they were doing? Did He forget about my track record? What in the world is He thinking? And then God reminded me of Moses.
When God told Moses to get his kinfolks out of Egypt..... here came the excuses. "I'm not good enough, I don't have all the answers, folks won't believe me, I suck at public speaking, I'm really not qualified etc." When Moses finally obeyed, we all know how that turned out. One of the most amazing supernatural events that God has ever orchestrated was put into motion by Moses' staff.
I'm not perfect. I don't have all the answers. I get mad and cuss. I've relapsed before. A bunch of times. I have a daughter in Mississippi that hasn't spoken to me in eight or nine years because of decisions I made while under the influence. I looted a lot of stuff before, during, and after Hurricane Katrina. I've chewed tobacco for almost 30 years and I'm still not responsible enough to have a spit cup in the house. Everyday I feel like I fail God, my wife and my boys. I don't listen to much gospel or contemporary Christian music. I don’t belong to any particular church. I've had a porn addiction that God allowed me to overcome. Gambling too. And womanizing. I listen to metal-core and industrial heavy metal music inappropriately loud for someone my age. I don't care for Donald Trump or country music. Because of the life I used to live, I always have a pistol within arms reach. I've been baptized like 5 or 6 times by 5 or 6 different denominations (that’s not a good thing.) Shannon and I shacked up before we got married. I’ve been in a gang. Steve Hill laid hands on me at the Brownsville Revival Reunion in Mobile and I heard the audible voice of God. I've been diagnosed with PTSD, tardive dyskinesia, Lyme Disease and depression. Because of all that I take 14 pills a day. Because of the PTSD, I can't sleep without medication. I'm a college graduate (somehow.) I have shot and been shot at. I consider myself a Calvinist (not the man bun craft beer and Starbucks kind of Calvinist.) Shannon isn't my first wife. I spent two and a half years in prison because I got caught breaking the law. I was in rehab when my daughter was born. I was born a fifth generation Mississippi Klansman. I'm adopted. I have some evil looking tattoos that cover up more evil looking tattoos. Both my biological parents were 15 when I was born. I've shot down a military drone with a machine gun and got in a lot of trouble. I've hurt so many people in my life that sometimes I'm overwhelmed with grief. I left my father in his hospital room and let him die alone. I've done CPR on three people and they all died. I've watched a man blow his head off with a shotgun and I did absolutely nothing to stop him.
So if you hear any rumors about me they are probably true. If you hear anything that isn't on this list, let me know and I will add it for future reference.
Do you understand now why I think I’m not qualified? By worldly standards I’m the last man for the job. So to say our God is a God of second chances is an understatement. God knows what He’s doing. He’s been in this line of work a long time. I wholly trust him with my life and the Recovery in Mcdowell program. Sometimes I feel very selfish whenever I am working with anyone that is struggling. Helping them helps me stay clean that day. While I've been typing this, using hasn't crossed my mind. My heart breaks for anyone who is hurting and struggling. When I say "I know how you feel", I really KNOW HOW YOU FEEL.
When we wake up in the morning, then God has given us another chance. It never ceases to amaze me at the powerful things that He can do with a broken soul. Mine or anyone else.
Ya'll holler if you need me.

Modern sculptures are showing significant deviation from the ancient theory of sculptures. It is an art form. During prehistoric times, ivory and clay were used to make sculptures. I lied.
Well, maybe that’s kind of harsh. At the time, I thought it was true.
A few years ago, I was all gung ho to put out a vinyl release of the complete recordings of Mississippi Fred McDowell: Live in New York rather than the original vinyl’s nine tracks from 1972.
Well, I’ve come to the conclusion that’s not going to happen.
Why?! How come?! (Don’t worry, you can still hear it.) All right, you persuaded me to give you the details. (Since this post is only interesting to a small subset of an already small group of people, I’ll go into excruciating detail.
The hippie record shop
In the 1970s, Tom Pomposello and Rob Witter owned a hippie record in Huntington, Long Island, my hometown. Up until they opened Kropotkin, like many suburban towns, a music freak’s only option for albums was a local appliance store or the first big box stores in a mall 10 miles away. Tom and Rob were just like us, young folk awakened by the British Invasion, who wanted a place where like minded people didn’t have to wade through Jack Jones or 101 Strings to get to the good stuff. You know, like Grand Funk Railroad :)
I’d heard about their shop, a simple place with pegboard walls lined with LP and a counter for a cash register. (Oh, did I mention the crib with Tom’s baby son?) We became friendly, I did a terrible interview with them for my new college radio show in New York (where they completely took the piss out of me) and I stopped by regularly to shoot the shit. Over the course of time I found that, like me, Tom was an amateur musician who implied he had greater goals than playing for his friends.
Recording Fred
One day in late 1971, Tom asked if I could get recording equipment, because he was playing the Village Gaslight with Mississippi Fred McDowell, and maybe I could play the concert on my radio show. I knew this was a big deal because 1) The Village Gaslight! On MacDougal Street in Greenwich Village? This place was a big deal, “real” musicians played there, it’s not like the Blue Goose Bar in town; and 2) anyone with “Mississippi” in front of their name must be famous! You bet, I’d abscond with the radio station’s only portable tape deck, a one track (that’s monaural)  Nagra meant only for news gathering. I was sure I could get away with it, there were no riots on campus right then.
Tumblr media
The show was recorded –it was awesome, as you can hear– I played it on my show and promptly forgot about it.
Oblivion
One day Tom was musing how he could get a record deal, the coin of the realm in our generation. I’d just read an article in Rolling Stone about the spate of independent record entrepreneurs popping up.
“Why get a deal? You should just do it yourself.”
One thing led to another, I agreed to help Tom make his first record and then he had an inspiration.
“We have a great, live, Fred McDowell recording. I’ll get permission from his manager and we’ll have our first record. It’ll sell out and we’ll be on our way.“
Sounded right to me. With Tom’s guidance, I started editing the show to a “best of” the concert and he hit up his friend, Dick Pennington, who became our third partner and co-founder. Dick financed the first (lousy) pressing, Tom suggested ‘Oblivion’ as our name, and we were off.
Tom was more than right. “Live in New York” started out, and has remained, our most popular recording (for about five minutes, Joe Lee Wilson-Oblivion OD5, gave it a run for the money). But Tom was always unhappy that both sets at the Gaslight went unheard for 25 years.
Live at the Gaslight
Oblivion basically went dark a few years later. Money woes, no real company strategy, and other priorities for Tom and me got in the way. Ironically, our last release was Tom’s solo album that started the whole thing.
In late 1998, I got a call from Tom in New York (by this time, I was an independent cartoon producer in Los Angeles) telling me he’d remastered the entire McDowell concert for release on two CDs. I was happy he’d gotten to it and waited for the release.
Tumblr media
Tragically by the time it came out, Tom had passed away from a car accident. His friend Anton Glovsky did a beautiful job with the production, but his company Live Archive, did stick around too long, and essentially, CD went out of print.
As I played the discs, I could see what Tom was trying to accomplish. He’s put some echo on our very dry, untreated with effects, recording, hoping to make it sound a bit more modern. Personally, I hated it and vowed to remaster it with a little more finesse, improving it, but honestly, not bathing the music in unnecessary “improvements.”
Double disappointment
It was my fervent hope that the vinyl issue (reissue?) would be an accurate, contemporary portrayal of Fred’s last recordings, the two sets he and Tom played at the coffee house in 1971. It was exciting to think about the beauty of a gatefold double LP, with amazing art and new liner notes, an appreciation of Fred’s magic.
So, with anticipation in my mind, I reached out to Tom’s widow to recover the original mono recordings I made so I could start the mastering. For reasons that are completely a bit murky, it was clear that those tapes had been lost, or maybe destroyed.
My first thought was that I’d release Tom’s CD remasters. But the longer I sat with them and prepared them for digital streaming, the more uncomfortable I became. To my ears, one of the joys of the vinyl resurgence was the chance to reclaim ideal recording masters, to be reproduced on in a quality, analog universe. These masters, complete as they are, don’t hit that standard for me.
So, I lied. But not really. The complete shows are available for listening, so are the untreated LP masters. No vinyl, a shame. But, I’ve tried to do my best for future fans, the best Oblivion can do under the circumstance.
Enjoy Fred McDowell’s final recordings, I’m sure you will.

FX’s Legion Chapter 15 Directed by Charlie McDowell Written by Noah Hawley & Nathaniel Halpern
* For a recap & review of Chapter 14, click here. * For a recap & review of Chapter 16, click here. Love the little unreliable narrator moments re: David (Dan Stevens), as this episode begins with an “ostensibly on Legion.” Quite the nice little addition before we even get into the meat and potatoes of Chapter 15. The other Narrator (Jon Hamm) tells us about “moral panic” and discusses how society gets to that place. We briefly look at it through the lens of comic books, the worry that fiction infects those who are easily influenced – i.e. youth. We also briefly see a glimpse of how things went for women accused of being witches hundreds of years ago. Same as the nationalist concern over immigration, et cetera. But the fear itself isn’t the issue, it’s those being frightened, and in turn how they react to that fright. In the meantime, Amahl Farouk (Navid Negahban) is working on his futuristic car, spitting up coins. Y’know, the usual type of astral plane shit. He soon hears David yelling at him over an intercom. Then, he and David are sitting across from one another for a little chat. The younger mutant is very unhappy about what’s happened to his sister, Amy (Katie Aselton). The Shadow King tries to turn David against his sister, and he also brings up the fact the brother’s had some seriously bad thoughts about his sister in the past. Of course that’s likely due to his schizophrenia issues. However, Farouk’s trying to provoke Mr. Haller into devastating action. Hopefully our man doesn’t spiral into a bad place.
“Gods make rules. They don’t follow them.”
David’s already underestimated his nemesis, who’s locked him in a room with memories of Amy. He’s stuck there, as the Shadow King is running off to find his body before anyone else. The whole situation gets pretty creepy. That is, until David begins to unleash a bit of his anger. Out of the sensory deprivation tank and back to Division 3, David’s at least got Syd (Rachel Keller) looking out for him. Although I feel bad for her. Because it’s not easy to deal with someone like David, despite her best intentions. All the same, they do talk a bit, about him meeting her in the future. Quite the strange conversation. Dig it. They eventually get into “ground rules” for their relationship re: the future Syd. A hilarious and sweet scene. Some serious shit is going down in the future. Farouk’s whole suicide future car is about getting TO the future. Perfect, no? He finds future Syd, and they get to a serious talk. They discuss David, and games of chance. He basically taunts her, flaunting his immense power. He also talks a good, circular game, in hopes of finding out something useful. Future Syd she needs Farouk to prevent the end of the world. Pretty sure David’s going to inadvertently cause whatever future devastation occurs. The Shadow King finds it ironic and hilarious he’s been the one scapegoated so long, while he’s actually supposed to be a hero rather than a villain. What about Lenny (Aubrey Plaza)? She’s got some of Amy’s final moments trapped in her head. She’s trapped in a cell at Division 3, antagonising Syd through the bars. And there she’ll stay for however long, going crazier and crazier.
Ptonomy (Jeremie Harris) is experiencing troubles. He gets a visit from the Vermillion (Jelly Howie/Brittney Parker Rose/Lexa Gluck). He sees a vision of Admiral Fukyama (Marc Oka), whose face reveals an even eerier vision within it. This makes the poor guy, still lying in his bed, scream out in the night. Afterwards, he’s like a man sleepwalking, body moving independently of his own mind. He makes a visit to the rooms of the others around Division 3, whispering things into their ears as they sleep. Uh oh, this doesn’t spell anything good. Combined with him leaving eggs on their bedside tables, whispering into them, too. More of the little creatures to crawl in their ears? Fukyama’s got eyes EVERYWHERE! David goes into the future, speaking with Syd there again. He hears about the “maybe apocalypse” plan with Farouk, and he doesn’t dig it, either. He hates the Shadow King, worse now after what he’s done to Amy. And it’s hard to reconcile with Syd suddenly trusting him to help them. There are troubles at Division 3. Clark (Hamish Linklater), Ptonomy, Kerry (Amber Midthunder), and Syd are all not doing well. They’re each experiencing mental distress thanks to Fukyama and his Vermillion. Speaking of, the Vermillion come across Kerry and Ptonomy, though they’re able to regenerate, and that’s tough. Good thing Kerry and Ptonomy are tougher. Elsewhere, David finds hundreds of eggshells all over the floor. Holy shit. Clark and Syd find Fukyama, ordering him to remove his basket. They see some creepy creature underneath. David arrives quick, preventing them from shooting Fukyama, who’s actually NOT a weird creature. So, David pulls one of those weird egg creatures out of both Syd and Clark’s heads. Not so easy with Ptonomy, it seems. He bends over, vomiting a pool of black tar, and then a massive creature grows out of him and stands tall. The thing runs off into the halls with David on its tail. He and Kerry confront it, but the thing can walk on walls and the ceiling, so it gets away easily. Meanwhile, Ptonomy’s dying, so the Vermillion will preserve his mind in “the mainframe” – a peaceful, forest-like space, where his consciousness will remain intact. Through Division 3, David tracks the beast. He jumps into its mind, a scene reminiscent of an old Ray Harryhausen dinosaur flick. Eventually, David’s able to will himself to a normal size, and the beast down to that of an ant. He sticks it in a jar and kills it. Done and done. Just as ideas can morph into monstrosities, we see what began as a little egg transformed into a horrifying beast. Love the way Legion deals with metaphors, packed into such a surreal and at times absurd package. Amazing writing. Sad to see Ptonomy go. He’s up there in the mainframe, so there’s always hope. That is, if his consciousness can survive. He’s got nothing left except his mind, his memories, and anything traumatic lurking in his past. This series can’t get any better. If it does, I may die. And I’d be fine with that, so long as it keeps blowing my mind until then. Chapter 16 should be pretty damn interesting.
