WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS (2014)
A cute mockumentary about vampires living in New Zealand. Watch it with friends, watch it alone, watch it because you watch the series, just watch it. This movie is a treat.
⭐⭐⭐⭐.5
Trigger Warning Mild Homophobia
We meet our gang of four vampires Viago, Vladislav, Deacon, and Petyr. They are living together in New Zealand after having all turned into vampires in their own various times in their own various ways. Deacon’s familiar, Jackie, brings them some humans as prey and Petyr goes a little rogue and turns one of them into a vampire so we have a new addition to the group named Nick. Nick brings in his human friend, Stu, who the gang likes better than Nick! Stu teaches them all kinds of modern human things like the internet and how to text. The boys are fascinated by both the tech and by Stu! There is a bit of a problem with Nick though in the fact that he won’t shut the fuck up about being a vampire. He announces it to almost everyone he meets which is a big no-no. Nick also finds out he cannot eat human food anymore and decides he is so over being a vampire.
Deacon goes to Jackie’s house to give her instructions but she finds out that Nick is now a vampire and is very upset. Her whole reasoning for being a familiar is so she can be turned into a vampire and Nick just gets turned before her? But then, disaster strikes! Petyr is killed in a sunlight incident! A vampire hunter broke into the basement letting light in and while Petyr was able to kill the hunter with his coffin lid, Petyr was ultimately undone by the burning rays of the evil sun. When Nick arrives he realizes the hunter was a man he revealed his identity to while about town. Nick led a vampire hunter back to the house and got Petyr killed! For this crime (and for wearing a jacket far too similar to the one Deacon wears) Nick is exiled from the group.
Several months later the boys are invited to a special ball but Vladislav’s arch rival will be the guest of honor there which really upsets our boy Vladislav. Viago and Deacon end up going together and they meet Jackie there who has been turned into a vampire by Nick. Nick is also there and he brought Stu. This was a very bad idea though because there is a room of hungry vampires who turn on them and want to eat Stu almost immediately. Vladislav shows up to try and fight his rival but it is Stu who ends up stabbing a vampire so they can escape the ball in one piece. They run into misfortune as they are leaving though because they encounter the group of werewolves they met before but this time the moon is full and they all transformed and they disemboweled Stu! Oh, no! Nick is very sad his friend is dead. Deacon gives him a nice pep talk about how everyone Nick loves will die…
In the end, Stu is alive! He turned into a werewolf and that is how he survived! Hey, whatever works! Viago finally approached his lady love that he had been stalking the whole movie and they are together now (and she's a vampire so it is forever). Vladislav gets back with his arch rival who just turned out to be his ex and he quickly remembers why they broke up in the first place. The after credits scene has Deacon doing vampire mind tricks on us, erasing our minds of us ever having watched the movie… Good thing I wrote this down!

Comedy Review: Margaret Cho
Fri. March 14, 2025 @ Wilbur Theatre (Boston, MA)
In Margaret Cho's 2015 comedy special PsyCHO, she mentioned the ABC-TV show Fresh Off the Boat being a new (at the time) network TV sitcom about an Asian-American family and how she created the first Asian-American family TV show All-American Girl (ABC 1994-1995) and how they had to wait an entire generation for a new one to begin. She was being self-deprecating, but I was actually a fan of her short-lived sitcom. I had seen Cho on a few stand-up TV shows and thought she was pretty funny, so I liked the idea of a sitcom loosely based on her own experience growing up in San Francisco in a Korean family as a hip single woman balancing relationships, friends, and her family's business was a showcase for her comedic voice. I was especially a big fan of the Pulp Fiction parody episode that featured Quentin Tarantino as her boyfriend (the two are friends and dated in the early 90s). When the series was canceled, like a lot of comedians who work through their personal struggles, it gave her so much material to joke about. But to her point, in some ways, she did blaze a trail for future Asian-American sitcoms like Fresh Off the Boat. She has always been very frank and graphic (almost too graphic at times) about sex. In one of her famous specials she said "Am I gay? Am I straight? I'm just slutty! Where's my parade?" She's popped up in a number of TV shows and movies (including John Woo's Face / Off), but she has remained a consistently solid stand-up for decades now. In addition to podcasts, books, comedy specials and albums, she has also released some music albums, including the recently released Lucky Gift. She's currently on tour and I was lucky enough to catch her at the Wilbur Theatre.
tour poster
There were a number of LOL moments of Cho's set. One of the things about being at her show is that she is very funny, but more than that - you are laughing at the fact that she just said what she said!?! The entire audience is having that same reaction! She did not hold back about her disdain for the Trump administration either. I was reminded of something Seth Meyers once said in an interview, about how there is a fine line between laughter and "claptor", which is when the audience isn't so much laughing because they think your joke is funny but clapping because they agree with what you're saying. In the Trump era, it would be easy to rely on "claptor" and just say "Trump Sucks", but the really sharp comedians like Meyers, Stephen Colbert and Colin Jost are trying to still find the humor in the news. Cho did just that too! She talked about how we used to hate and complain about Republicans like Sarah Palin. "Now, she's basically a Democrat!. George W. Bush, please come back" She also did her famous impression of her mother too. The set was very funny and also super graphic (i.e. I'll never look at a snicker bar the same again!?!). 30 years on, it's great to see Cho is still able to keep the audience laughing for an hour +! Especially for an audience in Boston, this was a show we all needed in 2025!

Sundance 2024 Film Review: Stress Positions ★★★1/2
Theda Hammel returns to Sundance following her 2022 TV pilot My Trip To Spain, with her feature debut as writer-director-composer-editor and star, Stress Positions, playing in the festival’s US Dramatic Competition. With its dry, sometimes uncomfortable tone, that easily shifts from offbeat to satirical to absurd to farcical, this deliciously dark, thought-provoking comedy sees her deliver on the…

These are the vibes I THE WHYTE PYTHON WORLD TOUR brings to the function bookshelf.
It's Spinal Tap meets Austin Powers.
It's an 80s themed wrestling duo alarming the interviewer.
It's Lorelei Gilmore Reading THE DIRT.
It's Ozzy Osbourne on reality TV.
It's "The Wind of Change" being used as a political battle cry.
Get ready for the world tour...

THE BABYSITTER (2017)
A fun and new story told in a nicely paced way. Very good acting, the child especially, you really connect with the kid and root for him. Samara Weaving does an excellent job in her dual role as babysitter and… other.
⭐⭐⭐⭐
This is one of your classic “the babysitter turns out to be an ageless baddie” story. You know the ones. Cole is a little dorky kid (and who doesn’t love a little dorky kid, come ON people?) and he is getting picked on at school for still having a babysitter, that is until they see how hot Bee is. Cole’s folks go out of town so he needs a babysitter for the evening and wouldn’t you know Bee is the one for him. They get along like a house fire though and things seem more than normal, exceptional really. That is until Bee offers the tween a double shot to help him fall asleep. Not strange at all. Cole feeds it to a plant but pretends to drink up, wanting to impress Bee. This is the beginning of the weirdness. Next after Cole is in bed Bee invites friends over, now as an old Babysitter I can firmly say this is a big no-no. The only thing I would do once the kids were asleep was raid the snacks they weren’t allowed to eat and then watch The N (does this age me too much?).
Anyway, Bee and her friends are playing Truth or Dare with a Spin the Bottle twist and it is Bee’s turn and she is tasked with kissing the whole group and when she gets to our odd man out (who literally says “I’m not really a part of the group”) she kisses him but then stabs him in the head with two knives so there is certainly something fishy going on. Cole of course is spying on this whole thing from the staircase and is horrified. The hot teens collect the sacrificial blood in two chalices and start talking about Satan, like, okay, not the direction I thought this was going but I guess that's just how Samara Weaving movies go sometimes. Random Satan. Though this came out before Ready or Not.
The hot teens go up to get innocent blood from Cole and he pretends to sleep through it but Bee catches him and they tie him up. Not before the cops are called though! And then a big mistake because both cops get killed and one of the teens gets shot and it looks like right in the heart but I guess it wasn’t because she keeps kicking for a while. Cole is able to escape and he pushes one of the boys down the stairs which kills him, yikes! Next he goes into the crawlspace and lights a fire that takes out another teen, wack! Then he is face to face with the quarterback who is oddly inspiring but it ends up okay because he dies thanks to his own hubris.
Finally it is just down to Cole and Bee, Cole escapes next door to the girl he has a crush on. He is able to hide her and himself from Bee who now has a fucking shotgun and he scored a kiss from his crush (which terrified him because he thought it meant he was about to get stabbed). He makes it back to his house and the chick who was shot is still there and kicking which is wack and a half but Bee shoots her head clean off for Cole, saving him. You kinda think that she's good now but she has already shown herself as a witch or whatever she is, The Big Bad. Cole threatens to set her book on fire and she tries to talk him down but he is too smart. He even sends a car into the living room pinning her down. They have one last talk, it is beautiful and sad, Cole really loved Bee.

2023: The Year in Green's Party
This was a historic year for my blog as it turned 10! In Jan. 2013 I began this blog as a way to share my thoughts on pop culture and since then I've gotten to do things I never even imagined would be possible: interviewing filmmakers, actors, musicians, authors and more; reviewing movies, music, concerts, books, and theater; covering conventions and film festivals; and connecting with fans who also have their hands on the pulse of pop culture at the moment and it's history. The Police never ended: It's as if I got to see a Police reunion this year because I got to cover guitarist Andy Summers' concert in July, singer / bassist Sting's concert in September, and while I didn't see drummer Stewart Copeland live, I did get to cover his book The Police Diaries in October!

Play of the Week! A new play, performed live, every week, in front of a live studio audience. How wrong could it go?
Okay, I gotta talk about The Goes Wrong Show.
The Goes Wrong Show is something I'm surprised Tumblr hasn't been more up in arms about. This website is, after all, all about committing to the bit. A popular text post by @linecoveredinjellyfish proposed the school of media criticism called "Bitism". And buddy, lemme tell you, The Goes Wrong Show is the patron saint of Bitism. They commit to the bit harder than an alcoholic horse who recently found protestant Jesus.
And it is the funniest goddamn thing I have ever seen.
As is so often the case, writing a review of a very good comedy is hard - it's not easy to talk about it without taking some of the oomph out of the jokes. And, make no mistake, The Goes Wrong Show is an incredibly good comedy. I'll try my best anyways, because I cannot stop recommending it, but if you don't need more convincing, just go watch an episode. It's incredible.
Our framing device is a series of weekly plays put on by an unbelievably incompetent and eclectic drama society, where anything can and probably will fuck up horribly. Terrible acting? A horrific script? Broken props? A set mistakenly built at a 90-degree angle? You name it, they found a way to fuck it up.
But. And this is the key thing. They commit. The script calls for a scene involving pouring tea in a set that's oriented completely wrong? Commit to the bit.
The script demands a period piece family dinner, but something is very wrong with the ceiling fan?
Commit. To. The. Bit.
Major actor in the piece is completely incompetent?
Commit.
To.
The.
Bit.
It's an Airplane!-esque barrage of constant absurd gags, and I don't say that lightly. Each member of the cast is distinctly deranged in their own unique ways, the stage management is woefully incompetent, and the special effects are really just a special kind of fucked.
Really, the only complaint I can make of this show is that there isn't more of it, and frankly that's a good problem to have! If you're the kind of person who's not too busy to read a long Tumblr fandom post, but is too busy to binge a series you can get through in an evening, just give s1e3, "A Trial To Watch", a look - in my humble opinion, it is incredibly hard to top.
