Abroad with the Broad Shelled Turtle
Chelodina expansa, more commonly known as the broad shelled turtle, is one of the largest freshwater turtles in Australia. The length of their shells can reach up to 50 cm (19.6 in), and their neck accounts for an additional 60-80% of their total length. Because of this length, C. expansa tucks its head in sideways as opposed to pulling it directly into its shell. At maximum, females reach a mass of 6 kg (13.2 lbs), while males only typically weigh about 4 kg (8.8 lbs). The top of the shell, or carapace, is dark brown or green, while the underside is a light cream; the same is true for the broad shelled turtle's head, neck, and legs. The feet are webbed, and have large claws which help adults to dig or fend off predators.
While they spend the winter buried in the mud, the broad shelled turtle is most active during the summer months, from November to March. During this time they are almost entirely aquatic, rarely emerging from the water even to bask. This species lives throughout the river basins of eastern Australia, and can be found in rivers, dams, lakes, and wetlands with plenty of vegetation cover. C. expansa is entirely carnivorous, feeding on crustaceans, aquatic insects, fish, and frogs via ambush, and carrion whenever it can find it. To locate prey, they have a keen sense of smell. Adults are not usually predated upon due to their thick shells and sharp claws, but eggs and juveniles are often prey for foxes, dingos, birds, rakalai, and large fish.
C. expansa nests in the winter, beginning in late February or March. Outside the mating season, individuals are generally solitary, but aggressive territoriality has not been observed. When mating time roles around, males seek out females to mate with; following the encounter, the female climbs out onto the bank and digs a nest for a clutch of anywhere from 5 to 28 eggs. To seal the nest, she then slams her body into the re-piled sand and mud, compacting it into a plug that will remain intact until the following year.
Incubation takes about 360 days, though some nests have been recorded as hatching at 500 days; this process is exceptionally slow due to the two periods of diapause, or developmental delays, that embryos pass through in order to survive the winter. Juveniles hatch in the spring, and emerge from the nest at the first heavy rain. It's unknown how long these turtles can live in the wild, but given their slow growth rate and adult invulnerability it's likely that they can live in excess of 20 years.
Conservation status: The IUCN consideres the broad shelled turtle to be Near Threatened, due primarily to habitat loss and high rates of nest predation by introduced foxes.

MIT scientists pin down the origins of a fast radio burst

MIT scientists pin down the origins of a fast radio burst
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Fast radio bursts are brief and brilliant explosions of radio waves emitted by extremely compact objects such as neutron stars and possibly black holes. These fleeting fireworks last for just a thousandth of a second and can carry an enormous amount of energy — enough to briefly outshine entire galaxies.
Since the first fast radio burst (FRB) was discovered in 2007, astronomers have detected thousands of FRBs, whose locations range from within our own galaxy to as far as 8 billion light-years away. Exactly how these cosmic radio flares are launched is a highly contested unknown.
Now, astronomers at MIT have pinned down the origins of at least one fast radio burst using a novel technique that could do the same for other FRBs. In their new study, appearing today in the journal Nature, the team focused on FRB 20221022A — a previously discovered fast radio burst that was detected from a galaxy about 200 million light-years away.
The team zeroed in further to determine the precise location of the radio signal by analyzing its “scintillation,” similar to how stars twinkle in the night sky. The scientists studied changes in the FRB’s brightness and determined that the burst must have originated from the immediate vicinity of its source, rather than much further out, as some models have predicted.
The team estimates that FRB 20221022A exploded from a region that is extremely close to a rotating neutron star, 10,000 kilometers away at most. That’s less than the distance between New York and Singapore. At such close range, the burst likely emerged from the neutron star’s magnetosphere — a highly magnetic region immediately surrounding the ultracompact star.
The team’s findings provide the first conclusive evidence that a fast radio burst can originate from the magnetosphere, the highly magnetic environment immediately surrounding an extremely compact object.
“In these environments of neutron stars, the magnetic fields are really at the limits of what the universe can produce,” says lead author Kenzie Nimmo, a postdoc in MIT’s Kavli Institute for Astrophysics and Space Research. “There’s been a lot of debate about whether this bright radio emission could even escape from that extreme plasma.”
“Around these highly magnetic neutron stars, also known as magnetars, atoms can’t exist — they would just get torn apart by the magnetic fields,” says Kiyoshi Masui, associate professor of physics at MIT. “The exciting thing here is, we find that the energy stored in those magnetic fields, close to the source, is twisting and reconfiguring such that it can be released as radio waves that we can see halfway across the universe.”
The study’s MIT co-authors include Adam Lanman, Shion Andrew, Daniele Michilli, and Kaitlyn Shin, along with collaborators from multiple institutions.
Burst size
Detections of fast radio bursts have ramped up in recent years, due to the Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment (CHIME). The radio telescope array comprises four large, stationary receivers, each shaped like a half-pipe, that are tuned to detect radio emissions within a range that is highly sensitive to fast radio bursts.
Since 2020, CHIME has detected thousands of FRBs from all over the universe. While scientists generally agree that the bursts arise from extremely compact objects, the exact physics driving the FRBs is unclear. Some models predict that fast radio bursts should come from the turbulent magnetosphere immediately surrounding a compact object, while others predict that the bursts should originate much further out, as part of a shockwave that propagates away from the central object.
To distinguish between the two scenarios, and determine where fast radio bursts arise, the team considered scintillation — the effect that occurs when light from a small bright source such as a star, filters through some medium, such as a galaxy’s gas. As the starlight filters through the gas, it bends in ways that make it appear, to a distant observer, as if the star is twinkling. The smaller or the farther away an object is, the more it twinkles. The light from larger or closer objects, such as planets in our own solar system, experience less bending, and therefore do not appear to twinkle.
The team reasoned that if they could estimate the degree to which an FRB scintillates, they might determine the relative size of the region from where the FRB originated. The smaller the region, the closer in the burst would be to its source, and the more likely it is to have come from a magnetically turbulent environment. The larger the region, the farther the burst would be, giving support to the idea that FRBs stem from far-out shockwaves.
Twinkle pattern
To test their idea, the researchers looked to FRB 20221022A, a fast radio burst that was detected by CHIME in 2022. The signal lasts about two milliseconds, and is a relatively run-of-the-mill FRB, in terms of its brightness. However, the team’s collaborators at McGill University found that FRB 20221022A exhibited one standout property: The light from the burst was highly polarized, with the angle of polarization tracing a smooth S-shaped curve.  This pattern is interpreted as evidence that the FRB emission site is rotating — a characteristic previously observed in pulsars, which are highly magnetized, rotating neutron stars.
To see a similar polarization in fast radio bursts was a first, suggesting that the signal may have arisen from the close-in vicinity of a neutron star. The McGill team’s results are reported in a companion paper today in Nature.
The MIT team realized that if FRB 20221022A originated from close to a neutron star, they should be able to prove this, using scintillation.
In their new study, Nimmo and her colleagues analyzed data from CHIME and observed steep variations in brightness that signaled scintillation — in other words, the FRB was twinkling. They confirmed that there is gas somewhere between the telescope and FRB that is bending and filtering the radio waves. The team then determined where this gas could be located, confirming that gas within the FRB’s host galaxy was responsible for some of the scintillation observed. This gas acted as a natural lens, allowing the researchers to zoom in on the FRB site and determine that the burst originated from an extremely small region, estimated to be about 10,000 kilometers wide.
“This means that the FRB is probably within hundreds of thousands of kilometers from the source,” Nimmo says. “That’s very close. For comparison, we would expect the signal would be more than tens of millions of kilometers away if it originated from a shockwave, and we would see no scintillation at all.”
“Zooming in to a 10,000-kilometer region, from a distance of 200 million light years, is like being able to measure the width of a DNA helix, which is about 2 nanometers wide, on the surface of the moon,” Masui says. “There’s an amazing range of scales involved.”
The team’s results, combined with the findings from the McGill team, rule out the possibility that FRB 20221022A emerged from the outskirts of a compact object. Instead, the studies prove for the first time that fast radio bursts can originate from very close to a neutron star, in highly chaotic magnetic environments.
“These bursts are always happening, and CHIME detects several a day,” Masui says. “There may be a lot of diversity in how and where they occur, and this scintillation technique will be really useful in helping to disentangle the various physics that drive these bursts.”
This research was supported by various institutions including the Canada Foundation for Innovation, the Dunlap Institute for Astronomy and Astrophysics at the University of Toronto, the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research, the Trottier Space Institute at McGill University, and the University of British Columbia.

⚜ Nova “Me” ??? (pov) ⚜ Scamall O'Moyner ⚜ Spéir O'Moyner
SETTING:
[overgrown, mossy swamp plane] [within the dominion of Kilrey] [in a tavern inside of Kilrey] [night; magic storm-blizzard]

Nova: [tense, but continues chewing the taffy-like ambrosia as she watches SpĂŠir and Scamall through her aura]
Siblings: [looking at each other, faces twisted and fae-ears lowered stressfully—]
Scamall: [guilty, but…]
SpĂŠir: [furious]
Spéir: (hisses under his breath) "Scamall! This is exactly why I—"
Scamall: [letting out a slow breath, shakes her head and gently pushes him to the side with just a wave of her essence and air. Moves to stop beside Nova and try to meet their eyes]
Nova: [hesitantly obliges her, chomping off a piece of their third ambrosia square]
Scamall: (voice gentle, but serious) "you have a plan? Do you need more ambrosia?"
Nova:
SpĂŠir:
Nova: [shocked she'd offer to help when doing so got her into this mess to begin with, but…]
Nova: [ears low, forces themself to just look away, nod curtly, and swallow their bite. Then, with their face turned away, rips off another chunk of ambrosia to chew]
Scamall: [smoothly sits down next to Nova and reaches with her essence to copy their earlier theft—]
Spéir: [grabs her shoulder, hissing) "Scamall, what are you doing!? You're going to—"
Scamall: [turning a sharp glare onto him in return, evenly) "they escaped from another archfaerie. They know what they're doing, too. We should help them."
Spéir: [stunned silent—]
Nova: 'too'...
Nova: [also stunned, but struggling not to be hopeful. Instead, forces herself to focus on her still-formulating escape plan. At the same time, starts on her fourth and last piece of ambrosia]
Ambrosia: [as a treat made of pure magic—and most often mixed in with sweets for additional taste—contained lots of energy for needy fae]
Ambrosia: [is most often used as compact, easy-to-serve rations from archfae to their thralls, meant to give them the essence they need to survive… while any and all other food mostly just tasted good and didn't do much for them. Not unless it matched their domain.]
Faeries: [each had control over a certain 'domain', depending on what they emerged from]
Scamall: [was clearly air-aligned, but, true to her name, seemed to have a domain specifically centered on clouds]
Tavernkeeper: [would seem earth-aligned at first glance, thanks to their earthen skin and the trail of dirt they left behind as they moved. But… their exact domain was harder to tell, considering the plants they'd had for hair. It could've meant they were life-aligned, or nature-aligned—]
Nova: [except, didn't just have to judge off of faeries' appearances]
Nova: [had a special talent in being able to 'feel out' for others' alignments, just by sensing their essence… or magical power]
Nova: [and, similarly, was much more adept at sensing and distinguishing between essence in general…]
Nova: [which was exactly why she could tell that the tavernkeeper, the earthen faerie, finally reached Kilrey.]
Nova: [taking a near-gasping breath, quickly hops out of her chair. Wipes the back of her hand—and her essence—against her mouth to absorb any last bits of ambrosia as she looks toward the siblings]
Spéir: [has his jaw clenched and arms crossed tight as he's turned away from them, glaring at the other inhabitants of the tavern… to help discourage them from staring, or catching Scamall's theft]
Scamall: [of course, still stealing ambrosia squares, slipping them between the loose folds of her airy clothes as soon as she's grabbed them]
Both: [as Nova hopped out of the chair, stop what they're doing to look at Nova with tense expressions and lowered ears]
Nova: [meets SpĂŠir's eyes, then Scamall's, and quickly turns to march toward the door]
Nova: (voice commanding, sounding far more confident than she felt) "if you want to 'help' me, we head out now. I can collect more essence on the way. Hurry!"
Air Siblings: [meet eyes once again behind her back]
Scamall: [immediately follows close behind Nova!]
SpĂŠir: [half-groans, half-growls, but quickly trails after]
Spéir: [… though his eyes dart from faerie to faerie as he wonders why nobody's reacting to their departure]
Nova: [almost as though she's reading his mind but more reading between the lines, and figuring it's better to say anyway) "I blocked them from seeing us. Come on!"
Spéir: [bites his tongue, unsure of a lot of things… but certain it was a bad time to ask questions]
Nova: [pushes the door open and speedwalks outside, ignoring the frostbite-cold of the now-winter that hits her]
Seasons, time, and weather: [could change constantly, depending on where they were in the Faewildes and the strength of the raw, unclaimed magic in the area…]
Raw Faewilde magic: [was incredibly dangerous even to faeries, able to take over their minds, make them lose their sense of selves, and turn them into what the humans called demons]
Demons: [creatures with seemingly no sapience, wanting nothing more than violence… and Nova couldn't blame them]
Nova: [wishes she had the strength—the bravery—to fight back against archfae she wasn't cornered by]
Nova: [wishes she could pay them back for their crimes.]
Nova: [fae-ears low and eyes scanning the streets around them, paces forward to lead the group through the quickest way out of town]
SpĂŠir: [from behind, voice tense) "what's your plan, fae. Who are you?"
Nova: [tenses, but… keeps pacing, eyeing the ever-fluctuating buildings once of wood, then of stone, then of ice… as everything rapidly changes from the cloud of raw magic unfurling throughout the town]
Nova: (voice starts anxious and uneven, but quickly levels to tense and hard as they switch topics) "I'm—... we leave Kil—the Archfae's dominion, so he's weaker. From there, he either gives up, or—"
Spéir: [didn't miss their avoiding answering who they were, but—]
SpĂŠir: (sharply interrupts) "he'll catch up before we can!"
Nova: [twists her form, turning her torso so—while her legs continue forward on her decided path—she's able to face Spéir while walking]
Siblings: [faces visibly twist in disgust at her grotesque display]
Nova: (harshly) "we have a head start and this—" [points up, then twists his finger in a circular gesture, alluding to the magic storm] "—is going to keep him from teleporting to us."
SpĂŠir:
Spéir: [visibly stunned… though also looks paler]
SpĂŠir: [actually, has changed a lot in appearance. His night-sky skin has quickly turned pale white, matching his hair and the snow around them]
SpĂŠir: [now, almost completely blends with the environment as he scans the area, the tips of his fae-ears dropping lower and lower]
Nova: (to himself) ah… that's why he feels a bit different from 'sky'.
Spéir: [returning his eyes to Nova, hesitantly) "is… that you?"
Nova: [breath catches, heart skipping a beat—]
Nova: [barks out a laugh and turns his torso back into place to increase his pace as he tries to hide his panic. Still, he's betrayed by his angled ears, poorly-faked laugh, and the breathlessness of his otherwise-incredulous voice) "no??? You think I'd be like this if I had that kinda power? I just sensed it coming, and we're taking advantage of it. Now hurry up, Kil—he, the Archfae, just left!"
Scamall: [from behind her; voice gentle, but subtly tense) "so… what happens when he catches up to us?"
Nova: [drops his eyes to the ground, falling silent as a cold hand of dread wraps itself tight around his heart]
Nova: (voice thick) "as long as we're outside of his dominion, I can take care of him by myself."
Tumblr media
YOU CAN WHAT BY YOURSELF, NOVA!?!?!
Aaaaaanyhow, how truthful do you think all of this is? What's with all of their fear of archfaeries? And how in the world would Nova "take care of" one by themself???

Cataclasite, stone of rebuilding
🖤 Cataclasite is a type of metamorphic rock that forms through mechanical deformation, typically in fault zones, where intense pressure and stress cause the rock to fracture and grind. High pressure conditions cause rocks to shatter into fragments, which are then compacted and cemented together with other minerals. It has a clastic texture, meaning it consists of angular fragments of pre-existing rocks and minerals. The fragments vary in size, and the fine-grained matrix surrounding them may contain crushed minerals.
❤️ Cataclasites are commonly found in fault zones, thrust faults, and transform boundaries where rocks experience intense crushing and grinding. They provide insights into fault mechanics and seismic activity. Studying cataclasites helps geologists understand past deformation processes and tectonic histories.
🤍 Cataclasites are generally studied for their geologic significance. However, since cataclasite forms under stress and pressure, it may be seen as a symbol of overcoming challenges and emerging stronger. It can be used in meditation or rituals focused on personal growth and resilience.
🖤 As a stone formed deep within the Earth, it may be associated with grounding energy and stability. Cataclasite can be used to promote balance during turbulent times.
❤️ The fragmented, yet unified structure of cataclasite can symbolize emotional healing and the integration of past life experiences. It can represent wholeness after fragmentation and help with emotional rebuilding.
🤍 Stones formed under intense conditions are sometimes believed to carry protective energies. Cataclasite may be used as a talisman to guard against negativity and emotional stress.
🖤 The mineral composition of cataclasite stones may vary based on the parent rock and the cementing minerals. Additional spiritual uses may be considered based on the composition of each specific stone. Common minerals found in cataclasite include quartz, feldspar, mica, calcite, dolomite, hematite and pyrite.

Small Concepts for the Land of Mountains and Its "Guardian" (Homeland of Aiko’s maternal relatives)
1. Geographical and Economic Overview
The Land of Mountains lies between the Land of Earth (north) and the Land of Wind (south). It is one of several minor nations forming a "trade isthmus" between Earth and Wind, connecting east and west. Due to its small size, its primary income comes from trade and cargo transport. Merchant routes pass through these minor nations instead of their larger neighbors, per pre-Village-era treaties guaranteeing security control over compact territories—and lower transit taxes.
2. The Chakra Void
The Land of Mountains is the epicenter of "chakra emptiness." Its unique ability to drain chakra to zero causes significant problems for shinobi and summoning animals. In the pre-Village era, it was renowned as the safest region for civilians. Shinobi can only operate near its borders—which is why "Hidden in the Mist Village" was later founded there.
3. Twin Capitals and Travel Restrictions
The country has two official capitals: "Eastern" and "Western". All foreign travelers must be escorted by Guild members for safety. Movement is strictly permitted along designated routes due to:
- Threats from the "Five Families" if their territorial borders ("homes") are crossed.
- Risks of landslides and wild beasts.
4. Isolation and the Five Families
With 80% of its land dominated by peaks, gorges, and impassable forests, some clans became radically isolated over centuries. Five major Families rule the primary mountain ranges, each with distinct dialects and customs—but united by shared superstitions. Their territories ("homes") are fiercely guarded. Unauthorized trespassers are captured, and ransoms must be paid to all Family heads, regardless of where the prisoner was taken. (Shinobi ransoms are doubled.)
This "ransom clause" was codified in the trade isthmus treaties to protect local autonomy. Murder of a native results in immediate execution ("blood for blood"). Capitals are notified but take no action.
5. The Guardian Faith
Mountain-dwellers share one belief: Long before chakra existed, the Guardian watched over its "children" (a status claimed exclusively by the Five Families, inherited through lineage). Legends say the Guardian:
- Shifted mountains to shield people from outsiders.
- Controlled weather, winds, and landslides.
- Demanded annual sacrifices (usually animals or criminals).
When chakra emerged, the Guardian retreated into the wild peaks to absorb all chakra—granting its people a chance to defend their land without external interference.
6. The Chakra Void’s Expansion & Yamamori
The Void expands by several kilometers each century. The entity behind it is called:
- Yamamori ("Mountain Keeper") in myth.
- Hur'kau by locals.
- Ekurahashi (its true name).
No verified depictions exist, relegating it to folklore. Descriptions paint it as a colossal humanoid:
- Black skin, blood-red circular patterns beneath curved horns.
- Golden-ribbed torso resembling exposed ribs.
- Six asymmetrical arms, legs, and a tail.
- Stone growths tipped in gold from head to tail.
Rumors claim even a fleck of its gold ensures wealth for eight generations.
7. Aiko’s Survival
After her mother’s death and Madara’s desertion, a grief-stricken Aiko traveled to her mother’s homeland to scatter her ashes (a local tradition). In a haze, she wandered into the forbidden mountains—where Yamamori is said to sleep. After completing the rites, exhaustion stranded her. As she accepted death, Yamamori appeared. Though angered by intruders, its curiosity (and boredom from centuries of slumber) led it to implant a "fragment" of itself into Aiko. This bond lets it observe the world through her eyes—and prevents her death until it loses interest.
Post-resurrection, Aiko returned to her village for her daughter’s sake. During the First Shinobi World War, she sent her brothers (Aoki and Aomo) to deliver her daughter (Ayumi) to their great-grandmother in the Land of Mountains, ordering them to stay. After Tobirama’s death, Aiko spiraled into self-destruction, even experimenting with suicide—only for Yamamori to revive her each time.
[That’s the concept for now! Might change drastically lol]

Deep-trench 3D printing enables next-gen RF devices with unprecedented precision
For decades, traditional lithography techniques—such as electron beam lithography and nanoimprinting—have struggled to meet the demand for ultra-fine, high-aspect-ratio structures in general. Similar difficulty also applies to metal-based radio-frequency (RF) components. Issues like poor thickness control, uneven sidewalls, and material limitations have constrained performance and scalability. Two-photon polymerization (2PP), known for its nanometer-scale precision and 3D design capabilities, has emerged as a promising alternative. However, integrating 2PP with robust metallization for functional RF components remains elusive due to process incompatibilities. Bridging this gap has become critical for enabling compact, high-frequency devices that can meet the evolving needs of wireless communication, material sensing, and chip-level integration.

Leaving Aymeric to his own devices, Aureia hurries across the cabin and crouches down, digging through her pack. Most of their belongings remain in the manacutter, but this one carries her essentials and emergency rations—and a few last minute surprises Hilda stuffed in there before patting her cheek and telling her to thank her later.
Maybe she will. She’ll probably owe her a whole bottle of Gibrillont’s finest for this.
She finds what she was after at the bottom of the pack. Flushing with excitement, she slips the compact bottle of oil into her hand and quickly returns to the hearth.
Aymeric lies on his front with the blanket beneath him, spread out in front of the fire. His lashes flutter as she approaches, a glint of the embers glowing softly in his bright blue eyes. With a content sigh, he crosses his arms and rests his arms on them, turning to face her as she kneels down beside him.
Aureia strokes her fingers through his hair and presses a gentle kiss to his forehead. “Tell me if it hurts,” she says as she flicks open the bottle and pours a generous amount of oil into her palm.
The groan he releases as she presses her hands into his muscles sends a pleasant shiver rippling down her spine. She straddles him to get a better angle and he sinks into the rug with an indulgent sigh as she works her way across his shoulders, his eyes shut and his face beautifully serene in the light of the fire. He is terribly knotted and tight, in more places than just the old injury. She digs her fingers into his upper back, reveling  in the little moans he no longer cares to hide, and it occurs to her that she should have offered to do this much sooner. Steam rooms and baths can only do so much to relax the body, but the touch of a lover…
“Aureia,” he mumbles. “Aureia…”
With a husky chuckle, she presses a kiss to his cheek and revisits the spots she has already gone over, loosening him further. He murmurs something and she leans in close, listening to his languid instructions as he guides her to the various problem spots across his back. She follows the instructions to the letter, marveling in the way he relaxes fully beneath her touch. Soon, he is lulled into a stupor—not asleep, but so at ease he might as well be intoxicated.
She slides further down his back, the oil mesmerizingly slick between her fingers. Her mind wanders, a hazy fantasy brushing the perimeter of her mind. Him, lying on his back, her hand around his cock, watching him fall deeper and deeper into this intoxicating haze as she coaxes all sorts of pleasure out of him. As much as she loves all the things he can do to her with his mouth and fingers, there is nothing quite as intensely fulfilling as what she can do for him.
Her fingers brush the small of his back, wandering lower and lower.
He groans. “Aureia,” he murmurs.
“Yes?”
“I…” He pauses, his breath coming in pants. “Please.”
She runs her palms across his lower back, brushing his ass. “Tell me what you need.”
“I…” He groans. “Go further. Please.”
She raises an eyebrow, her heart suddenly thundering in her chest. “Here?” she asks, resting the tips of her fingers against his ass.
He sucks in a breath. “Fury take me, yes.”
It takes a moment. She’s uncertain, trembling with excitement but also the fear of doing in wrong. He pulls her close, whispering instructions in her ear, lulling her into a pleasurable haze as his voice deepens and he guides her through his request. Heat flushes through her and she can feel her own desire coiling in her core, a slick wetness pooling between her thighs. Inhaling a breath, she fetches more oil and lays down on her side, the rug coarse against her naked skin. Her eyes are glued to his.
At last, she returns her hand to his ass and slips her fingers between the cheeks, massaging the opening.
His eyelashes flutter and he bites back a moan. She smiles, careful to keep her touch gentle as she explores further, unable to take her eyes off his face. He inhales sharply, his pleasure bright in the glow of the hearth, murmuring an endless stream of encouragement as she pushes further. The tip of her finger presses inward, drawing a startling deep groan. His hand fists in the blanket, squeezing the fabric as his pleasure builds.
More, then more again. Agonizingly slow, yet astonishingly fast. And then it arrives sooner than she expected, this point he was seeking from the moment she put her hands on his back as her fingertips brush the spot that has him unravelling.
She moves, thrusting her fingers long and slow beneath his direction, his words becoming more scattered and stammered as they proceed. His back rolls, his body moving in tandem with hers, his gaze still locked on hers. Sweat beads on his brow and he muffles a moan, falling deeper and deeper into the pleasure she coaxes out of him. They coast together, riding this moment in gentle harmony, pulling each other further and further into it.
The point of no return comes with no warning.
He breaks eye contact and squeezes his eyes shut, turning his face to bury it in his arms. She sucks in a breath, reminding herself to breathe as she watches him come apart beside her. Body shaking, hands grasping, voice moaning—his pleasure hits him hard and rolls through him, wave after wave of heightened desire pushing him over the brink.
She pulls her fingers free and he rolls over, crushing her to his chest and burying his face in his neck, his fingers tangled in her hair. She holds him, murmuring soothing words, drinking in the moment as it passes over them, until at last there is nothing left but the sound of their pounding hearts and their panting breath.
Aureia bites her lip and brushes hair off his forehead so she can see his eyes. “Good?” she asks quietly, a flush on her cheeks. Strange to feel timid now after all of that, but first times are like that.
Aymeric chuckles huskily and bows his head, pressing messy kiss to her forehead. “Good,” he replies, his voice raw. “Very good. Thank you, my love.”
She smiles. Excusing herself, she clambers to her feet and rushes to the bathroom, eager to clean up as best she can as quickly as she can. She grab another blanket from the couch on her return, throwing it about them as she lies down beside him and curls into his warmth. The hearth crackles behind her, its flames warming her bare back, and a little shiver courses through her. Not from the cold outside, not from the nervousness of following a new act—but from excitement. If she didn’t know any better, she would wonder if she was feverish.
Outside, the storm roars in a flurry of rain and snow.
Aymeric takes her hand and folds her fingers together, pressing a kiss to her knuckles. “Aureia,” he murmurs.
“Mm?”
He says nothing in reply, but his body is more than eager to speak.
His hand skims across her waist, sliding upwards to cup her breast. She closes her eyes, swallowing a moan as he flicks a thumb across her nipple and pinches it. Then he dips his head and presses a searing kiss to the tender flesh, sweeping his tongue across the small bud over and over until she is melting in his arms.
He moves quickly, seizing the moment before it disappears.
One moment she is enfolded in his arms, the next she is flat on her back with his weight pressing pleasingly into her. Aymeric straddles her, pressing his forearms against the floor to brace his weight. His dark hair falls across his forehead, blue eyes sparkling behind the locks. Sweat and oil gleam on his chest and arm in the light of the hearth, as if he has just emerged from the hot springs. No hot springs for them now, but to be honest, she doesn’t mind—this is much better.
She lies beneath him, her dark hair spread about her head like a halo. Her body is loose, open, wanting—as if all her fears and anxieties have melted away like the snow gathered on the door’s threshold. There is nothing here but them, and they have nothing but time.
A night, a day, a week—more. Until the storm passes, nothing else exists.
From his expression, she knows he intends to make the most of it.
He bows his head, sucking sharp, open-mouthed kisses across her breasts that are sure to leave a mark tomorrow. Before she has time to revel in the moment, he has moved on. His nose grazes her stomach as he moves down and down, nipping and sucking as he kisses her to oblivion and back. Firm fingers press into her hips and then she is sailing up and up, her back flat on the floor and her legs slung over his shoulders. He kneels between her thighs and raises his head, meeting her eyes as he stares down at her from above.
Then he presses his mouth to her clit and sucks.
Pleasure hits her like a wave. She cries out, squeezing her eyes shut as sensation overwhelms her. He has never started this strong, this fervent, this intense. She sinks into the blankets, trembling uncontrollably as his tongue sweeps across her clit, pushing her to a brink she has never reached before. The feverish chill bursts across her skin and she shakes, hips bucking against his mouth. He chuckles and pulls back, inhaling a sharp breath, then returns for more.
Her climax hits and she breaks immediately, legs sliding across his shoulders, her foot flexing uncontrollably in the air as he continues to lick and suck. He draws rasping breath after rasping breath out of her, and still he is not done—and neither is she. Heat courses through her and already a new coil of pleasure is tightening deep within her core. His tongue swipes through her core, pushing into her entrance and back again, then he returns to the sensitive bud that is already far too tender. He laps, his tongue flitting across her clit with featherlight strokes, again and again until she can bear it no longer.
She whimpers and slams her hands on the floor, gripping the blankets as she comes again, the sensation ripping through her in a powerful echo to the first time.
He pulls back and lowers her hips, setting her gently on the floor even as he shifts to lay beside her. His body presses against hers—skin searing, hot and sticky with sweat—and he takes her face in his hands and kisses her deeply. She knows, even as her second orgasm retreats, that he is not finished with her. Already he is nudging her legs open and slipping a hand between them, fingertips grazing her inner thigh. He kisses her, savouring her moans as he glides his fingers through her slick heat and presses them into the entrance. Her stomach tightens, muscles contracting—somehow she is both too loose and too tight, her body limp with exhilaration, but already tensing at his touch in anticipation of more. He tests the boundary, then slips a single finger inside her, curving it until it brushes against the spot that makes her wild.
His name falls from her lips in a rush, muddled and scrambled.
The bliss is agony.
He laughs and kisses her brow, each thrust sending pleasure rippling through her. She gasps and pulls away, burying her face in his shoulder as he pulls his finger away. He returns a moment later, two fingers nudging gently at her entrance. She widens her legs and lets them fall open, desperately urging her body to let the extra girth enter her without resistance. Her belly tightens; she inhales a breath and lets it go, falling more open and relaxed.
His fingers press inward. Her body accepts, no blistering pain this time as she stretches around them. She gasps, reveling in the sensation, rolling her hips in tandem with his movements. Her mind fuzzes, pleasure mounting for a third time. When he slides his other hand between her thighs to roll his fingertips across her clit, she breaks again.
The crackle of the hearth. The scent of him. Her quiet cries, the endless sensation.
She falls through it all, her core squeezing delectably around his fingers. He drives her further and further to her very limit, his thumb sweeping across her aching, tender clit one last time as he coaxes a last cry from her. Then he pulls back and folds her into his embrace, holding her until her shaking and trembling stutters to a final stop.
Aureia lies in tangled in his arms, the blankets twisted around them. Exhaustion seeps through her, pulling at every tender muscle. A wonderfully open ache rises in the pit of her stomach, the aftereffect of her body’s satisfaction. Her mind is a haze, words too difficult to put together. He has done something to her—something wonderful, something enthralling. She has never been quite so satisfied.
Aymeric kisses her cheek and sweeps a lock of hair behind her ear. “Are you all right?” he murmurs.
She nods, still too curled into him to look him in the eye. Throwing a leg over his hip, she grips him tight and brings her body flush with his. His cock presses against her belly, half-hard and yearning. Something wet gathers at the tip. “Yes,” she rasps finally, pressing her head against his chest. His heartbeat thumps in her ear, bright and strong and pulsing with life.
“How many times?”
He’s eager to know the answer.
The corners of her lips tug upwards in a smile. “Three.”
He chuckles huskily. Shifting his weight, he slides down the blanket until they are face to face and threads his fingers through her hair, pulling her up for a kiss. His lips press against hers, slow and relaxed, the vigorous urgency from before replaced with languid sensuality. She sinks into the kiss, her mind wandering in the haze of her afterglow, her thoughts returning to the sensation of his fingers within her. Two has always been too much for her before tonight. So, what is different? What has changed?
His cock throbs between them.
“Aymeric,” she says quietly.
“Yes?”
She pushes herself up on an elbow, her dark hair cascading about her shoulders. It’s dry now, though the storm’s winds have left it impossibly tangled. “How… tired are you?”
“I sated, but I am not tired at all. It will be some time before I am ready for sleep.” His brows draw together and he meets her gaze, trying to figure out her intentions. “What are you truly asking?”
She scratches at the rug, fingernails catching in the coarse fabric. “I want to try again.”
“…try?”
“I want you in me. Not your fingers, your…” She reaches between them, her hand brushing his cock. “I want you.”
His expression softens. “Are you certain?”
Her heart pounds. The ache deep within her is now open and raw, a blistering need to seize this chance and push the moment to its fullest. He has satisfied her three times already, but she could do another. If they wait a little bit, let the tenderness subside… if they are slow and take their time…
Heat flushes her cheeks. She falls back into the blanket and rolls onto her back, staring at the ceiling. She hasn’t noticed it until now, but the woodwork is far prettier than she expected for an abandoned cabin, loops and swirls woven together in tangled knots that reminds her of Gridanian preferences.
“Aureia.”
Stop distracting yourself. She turns onto her side and faces away from him, hiding in the blankets as she shuts out the perfectly perfect ceiling above, and bites her tongue as she considers her answer. How to explain? She feels so foolish that her failures have loomed so large. He loves her as she is; he has made that clear time and time again. And yet without surmounting this single issue in their sex life, she feels incomplete.
“I want to,” she whispers into the blankets as he throws an arm around her waist and pulls himself into her. She’s all too aware of the way his body presses into her own. The flush of his naked skin against hers, the touch of his hand on her thigh, the whisper of his breath against her spine. “Because I’m terrified that if we keep waiting for the right moment, it will never happen.”
He pauses. “And if it doesn’t? Would that be so terrible?”
“Yes! No—I…” She chews her lower lip and curls deeper into the blankets, ashamed to let him see her face. Judging from the heat on her cheeks, she must be bright red. “I don’t know. Or… logically I know it’s not important, but I still feel that it is.”
“Why? There is no one to whom you need answer. Least of all me.”
“I can’t explain it. It’s important to me that I do this. It just… it just is.”  She squeezes her eyes shut and folds her arms over her breasts. “Because I still don’t want to be in my thirties and never have had… this.”
“It doesn’t change who you are.”
She grimaces. “You know some people would still consider me a virgin, yes?”
“And do you?”
“Hells, no—”
“Then what does it matter? Frankly, I much detest the word and the concept and any person who places too much value on it.” He lets out a long sigh. “From what I have observed, I have long felt that there is too much preoccupation with what is considered true intimate relations. In Ishgard, at the very least, but with how stringently the divide between highborn and lowborn and all that it entails has been observed, you could consider us backwards and close-minded in more ways than one. Perhaps it is different in Eorzea—”
“It’s not. I don’t think it’s different anywhere. There’s the same assumptions. The same… judgement.”
He falls silent. She chews her lower lip, wondering what he must be thinking, what he must think of her for lingering on it… Round and round they go, this topic inevitably present whenever they have sex, even if they don’t discuss it directly. Maybe she’s too stubborn. Maybe she needs to learn to let it go. Not all things are meant for everyone, she knows this—just like she makes for a poor archer and an even poorer bard, or how the magicks of the arcanists completely fail to make sense to her. But this is far more personal, far more intimate. Even though it is no one’s business what she does behind closed doors, she can’t help but be stung that this one thing that is deigned a natural and core part of most women’s lives isn’t possible for her…
His hand presses gently into her side.
Slowly, she follows his silent gesture, allowing him to roll her over. They lie side-by-side and face-to-face, legs tangled together. He pushes a stray lock behind her ear and strokes her hair, his gaze sweeping over her as he drinks in her features. Gods, he really does love her, doesn’t he? She is certain no one has ever looked at her like that before, nor will anyone look at her like that again.
Slowly, Aymeric leans in and presses a kiss to her mouth. Softer, slower—chaste in comparison to how he has kissed her before. He lingers in it, savouring the moment, then draws back. “Then let us try again,” he murmurs.
Aureia’s heart pounds, the rush fervently excited yet hesitantly cautious. She shoves away all thoughts of what if and what then, slamming the door on the fear that this will only end in disappointment—and nods.
He kisses her again.
And then he is touching her all over—hands on her body, lips on her jaw, her neck, the hollow of her throat. Gone is the electric urgency of before, all spark and fire; now, he moves with focused movements, languid and slow, the fire dimming to an endless, fervent burn. He rolls on top of her and presses his mouth to hers, kissing her deeply as his hand slides down her side and across her hip. His fingers brush her inner thigh in a silent request, and her legs fall wide.
He does not stop kissing her, even as he positions himself between her legs. Even as he dips a hand between them and slides a finger through her wet heat, brushing carefully against her overstimulated clit. She trembles at the touch, the desire returning to her in a roar, coiling within her as if on command. Her chest heaves and she moans against his lips, reaching up to tangle her fingers in his hair. He chuckles and sinks into the kiss, lost in the moment as he strokes her over and over.
She gasps, murmuring in protest, her stomach clenching as the coil of pleasure tightens. The pressure vanishes, leaving her aching and wanting, and she draws back and sinks deeper into the nest of blankets, closing her eyes as the warmth of the hearth washes over her. She floats in a soft haze, ignorant of the storm outside, desiring more but content to simply coast on the sensation. For a moment, she isn’t sure what has happened or where his hands have gone—but then his hand brushes against her lower belly and he utters a wordless grunt, and the haze slips away, vanishing as if she has woken up to a brilliant sun.
Releasing a hand from his hair, she reaches down and slides it between them. She finds what she expects—his fingers wrapped firmly around his cock. Her fingertips brush the back of his hand and he slows, allowing her to replace his grip with her own. He sucks in a breath, shaking above her as she finds the right rhythm, stroking him just the way he likes.
It’s a comforting pace to fall into and she finds herself quickly overtaken by it, coaxing little gasps and moans with the mere touch of her fingers. She opens her eyes, a content little laugh bubbling out of her as she watches him above her. The way he squeezes his eyes shut, the way his lips moves as he muffles the sound of his own pleasure, the minutiae of expressions that flicker across his face as he tries to hold himself together.
Suddenly, his eyes snap open and he growls, the sound rumbling sensually in the back of his throat. Brushing her hand away, he pulls her into a tight embrace and kisses her firm and hard, his weight pressing down upon her. She gasps and raises her legs, her foot brushing his ass as her thighs squeeze his hips. His cock brushes her entrance.
His kisses her—equal parts rough and gentle, stroking her hair with one hand as the other reaches between them. Her stomach tightens as she feels him take his cock in hand and slide it through her slick heat, heart pounding in anticipation. Her breath quickens, anxiety and fear and delight and joy coursing through her. She trembles and rolls her hips, grinding against his hardened cock—an invitation, a request, a something.
“Aureia…” He breaks the kiss, fingertips now caressing the side of her face. “Breathe.”
“What?”
“Breathe. Please. For me.”
She meets his eyes.
“Breathe.”
She inhales, slow and steady.
The tightness vanishes.
And he slowly guides himself into her.
She stares up at him, unable to look away as she slowly takes him. A blistering pain—so familiar from their many failed attempts—strikes through her at the first ilm. Panic rises, her mind already preparing to suffer the same disappointment that always happens after they make it this far, but then—it snaps. The sting melts away, vanishing into nothing as her core stretches hungrily around him. She gasps, gulping in one breath after another, until at last he slides the rest of the way and sheathes himself fully within her.
The stretch, the fullness—satisfaction, and something more. Something intimate, something private, something so personal that words cannot do it justice.
“Aureia…” He smooths hair back from her forehead and gives her kiss, short and sweet.
She raises a hand and cups his cheek, trembling as she laughs.
He kisses her. The sensation of his movements pulls her in all directions; the pressure releases, the tension breaking, and then his cock slides back in with ease, thrusting deep. Her back arches and she moves with him, eyes locked on his, biting her lip to keep from crying. Tears of joy, tears of pleasure, tears from the sensation of something she has yearned for ever since that first night with him.
Aymeric exhales softly, his breath ghosting across her cheek. “Are you crying?” he asks.
Aureia tangles her hands in his hair. “Yes,” she sobs, breaking in his arms. “Yes. It’s a good thing, I promise—”
His breath hitches. “I know, my love, I know—”
“Gods, I fucking love you—”
She drags him down and kisses him, desperate and urgent and content. Tears cling to her eyelashes and she blinks them away, refusing to let them stain this moment. Her hips roll, dragging him deeper and deeper, and soon they are moving together, connected in a way they have never been before. He fills her until she is  full and aching and bursting at the seams, pleasure rippling through her from a place she has never touched before. His touch his everywhere—on her mouth, on her throat, on her breasts, between her legs—drinking in every part of this moment and refusing to let it go.
There is nothing but each other, nothing but bliss—everything beyond the walls of this cabin forgotten.
When the agonizing bliss shatters her for the fourth time that night, she holds onto it for as long as she can, shuddering and shaking as she kisses him again and again. Her core tightens around him and draws a final gasping breath, and he collapses into her, a searing warmth flooding through her as he reaches his end. He pulls out and they fall together in a tangle of limbs, clutching one another as if they cannot bear to let go.
Slowly, the frantic pace of their breath subsides.
Slowly, the beat of their hearts calms.
Slowly, slowly, slowly…
She curls on her side with his arms wrapped around her, the blankets askew beneath them. His head is buried in the crook of her neck, his breath ghosting across her skin, his fingers entwined with hers. There are many things she wishes she could say to him, but for now there are no words. There is only the comfort of this content silence, the knowledge that he has given her something precious and can never be taken away.
Gods, she really does love him.
Quietly, she rolls over and pushes herself up, her movements slow and lethargic. Stretching her arms above her head, she works out the knots forming in her shoulders as she surveys the room, considering what to do next. Their clothing hangs over the rim of the bath, still damp from the looks of it. Outside, the storm rages on, the blustering wind tearing at the trees and throwing snow against the windows. The light inside the cabin has dimmed, the hearth burned down to embers. A single fervent flame still licks its way around the edge of a charred log, flickering back and forth in one last dance. The cold is creeping back in, the darkness lurking in the corners of the cabins, waiting to be chased away.
She can do something about that. Maybe now, maybe later, maybe…
Aureia leans down, fingertips brushing gently across his cheek. “Aymeric?” she asks.
His eyelashes flutter. “Hm?” he murmurs sleepily.
“I was thinking… would you like to join me for a bath?”
A pleasant murmur rumbles in his throat. “A bath sounds heavenly.”
“Doesn’t it?” She runs a hand across his shoulder, her touch playful even in its lethargy. “I was just thinking how we may have undone any of the good that massage did you.”
“Aye. Perhaps some day we will choose a more comfortable place than the floor to pursue our idle pleasures.”
“What does that mean?”
“Simply that I believe I have taken you on the floor more times than I have in a bed.”
“I—but—”
“I believe you have a habit forming.”
“I—oh—” She glowers at him. “All right. Maybe I do. But you don’t have to say it like that—”
Aymeric opens his eyes and looks up at her, spellbound. With a grin, he pushes himself up and catches her in a kiss. She laughs, joy thrumming in her heart, and allows him to sweep her into his arms.
It is some time before either of them remember the bath.

It's been a while since I looked at flowers so here are Marauders era characters as plants:
James Potter: Sunflowers since he's commonly associated with the sun. Or delphinium for positivity and a big heart!
Sirius Black: Ivy, the common ivy, or English or European ivy. It's a symbol of loyalty and fidelity. Fits enough for me.
Remus Lupin: Wolfsbane. Believed to repel werewolves, and it's used in a potion in the Wizarding World. But if we want a less angsty plant there is also the tropical white morning glory. It's also known as a moonflower and symbolizes the ability of beauty to emerge in dark times, and is used to provide hope.
Peter Pettigrew: Burgundy dahlias for betrayal, for obvious reasons. But also purple hyacinths for a desire for forgiveness. Cuz I'm hell bent that Peter was regretful of what he did in canon
Lily Evans: I'm not gonna give her lily, that seems a little too obvious lol but, peonies! They symbolize love, honor, happiness wealth, romance, and beauty. Which yk, works well in my eyes
Mary Macdonald: Poppies for remembrance of the death and consolation. It's based on the headcanon she obliviated herself sometime before to during the first wizarding war because everything was getting too much for her. Also, poppies are used to create opium, which relieves pain. It's pretty sad ngl, that hc always gets me.
Marlene McKinnon: King Protea, it's very sharp-looking flower that symbolizes strength and resilience. Not much info is given about Marlene during the war except her entire family was wiped out, but given her personality in fanon. I imagine she put up a hella good fight. I would give this to Dorcas but I have another one for her.
Slytherins! (Including Pandora!)
Regulus Black: Thorns! Rose thorns mostly, but just thorns in general. From what I read, rose thorns show adversity and sacrifice. Regulus had the misfortune of being born into a family with shit views and never having a morally correct input his entire life and he basically sacrificed his life to bring down the Dark Lord. Thorns are always ways for a plant to deter herbivores from eating them, take that as you will!
Barty Crouch Jr: Bleeding hearts, cuz yeahhhh, everlasting love? Unrequited love?? Tragedy compacted into one. His daddy issues too?? Him pleading for his dad to love him?? HIS MOTHER GIVING UP HER LAST MOMENTS FOR HIM??? EVAN AND REGULUS???? CMON CMONNNNN
Evan Rosier: Venus Fly Trap for persistence. This man was not willing to end up in Azkaban and took Moody's fucking nose with him. Venus fly traps are also known to die right after digestion aka eating a fly so it fits! (I LOVEEE carnivorous plants)
Dorcas Meadows: Laurel leaves for victory and achievement. Specifically, laurel leaves in a wreath. I think it's neat since she was powerful enough that Voldemort had to kill her himself. Mf was takin them out one by one until Voldy decided she was too op. LOVE HER FOR THAT
Pandora Rosier: Not the most hottest flower (lol), but the amaranth, while it could also mean everlasting last love, but it also means hopelessness or hopeless love. This only really works if you see Pandora as a seer. Something I think is interesting is the fact that fate is fate, it's sealed and final, and there is never a way around it. If you try to get around fate, you walk right into it because you never a chance. Pandora as a seer would've saw her friends and classmates dying and can't do anything about it because fate is sealed from the very beginning. It's hopeless.

yes pls.... give inform....
so!! gray was originally a character i wrote and designed for a narrative project, not actually lancer.
his original concept was meant to open the discussion "how much of gray is himself/his own nature, and how much is TR-GRAE; and vice versa?" though, honestly, that doesn't matter much to me; he just, is the way that he is. i actually refer to the two as brothers, though they're less like a traditional family and more two people shoved into a blender, combined, then poured back out into two separate molds?
anyways, about why gray is so jacked up!!
From his original text, I kept the city/colony he originates from;
>The collapse of Leicester (pop. 1,230,000) marked the final days of Harrier (55-Cancri-fb)'s civilization. Colonization of the distant moon had been difficult; Tidally locked and weaving ever-so-slightly in and out of the solar system's habitable zone, the celestial body only had two small islands of land that were habitable year-round. Capitalizing on the mineral-rich and lush land, Harrier's settlers built and developed massive supercities. Housing, commercial districts, etcetera were all crammed together in compact skyscrapers. This left more room for agricultural efforts, but created a cramped and uncomfortable lifestyle for the generations to come.
Eventually- Leicester, the largest of the two habitable cities, began to grow too close to the stars. Generations of expansion made the terrain beneath their feet unstable- and the crumbling body of their beloved moon gave way. The entirety of Leicester collapsed in on itself, sucked into a massive sinkhole. Skyscrapers fell unto one another like a poorly-assembled jenga tower. Survivors were few and far in-between as decades of carefully-constructed infrastructure fell into the depths. Those who did survive were forced to contest with the post-apocalyptic like conditions of their fallen city.
So, Gray, bless his heart, is dropped into the sinkhole with the rest of his city; Most of the scars we see today, such as the ones on his chest and (organic) arms, are the result of shrapnel damage. He loses his left arm in the initial collapse, and his right to infection shortly thereafter;
One unfortunate soul- seven year-old-boy, Arthur- fell into the custody of the paltry few that had been living on the lip of the city. Wounded from the collapse of his housing unit, the boy's arms were tragically amputated; Quick thinking and good luck, however, saved his life. Shortly thereafter, he was outfitted with makeshift prosthetics, allowing him to at least somewhat participate in the survivors' attempts at rebuilding.
Now, that's the spot where Original Gray and Lancer Gray diverge; in LANCER, the very young Gray goes on to explore and adventure in the wreckage of his city, and eventually comes across the entombed chassis of a long-forgotten mech. He climbs up to meet it- and makes contact with the cascading mind of a very, very old NHP.
See, my take on NHPs' "perspectives", and how those can be translated into human/anthropocentric analogies, is sort of convoluted and it would honestly require a post of my own (which I would love to make, if given the time and motivation)- but the important thing about how TR-GRAE (or, at least, the nonhuman mind it was founded on) in specific works is that a willing, malleable, and open (y'know, like a child's) human mind was the perfect means for it to ground and voluntarily shackle itself.
Obviously, gray doesn't remember this. He doesn't remember much of his history at all.
No, Gray remembers emerging on Carina, well into his teens, having been "adopted" by a Northstar campus outreach/scholarship program based on engineering prowess he thinks that he always had. He doesn't remember how, or when, but he had built a casket for the mind that he discovered, and had come to regard the entity- the person- within like family. Gray and TR-GRAE (named for the chassis he was discovered in and the subsequent role he filled in their community, "Terran Recovery - Ground Rescue and Excavation") understand eachother on a frightening level, even without implant intervention (though Gray has a lot of implants installed for his and his copilot's convenience). They don't need to speak to know what the other is thinking, or needs, or even knows. Of course, there are several divides, and the fact that TR-GRAE knows what Gray knows, but not vice versa—
Anyways, Gray has been in IPS-N "custody" for ~8 years? He was 8 when the city collapsed, 10 when they picked him up, and he's 19 now. Ra's sake, he's young—
I hoped you paid attention, this will be on your test.

The origins of a fast radio burst
In their new study, appearing in the journal Nature, the team focused on FRB 20221022A — a previously discovered fast radio burst that was detected from a galaxy about 200 million light-years away.

Nick Cave : The Red Hand Files
ISSUE #323 / MAY 2025
“My dad died suddenly and unexpectedly. We moved and only saw him for two weeks of what turned out to be his last year on earth. Now I feel like I have failed him so terribly. How do you apologize to someone who is gone? How do you say I love you and I’m so sorry when their ears and their heart don’t exist anymore?”
AMY, LOS ANGELES, USA
Dear Amy,
It’s 3am and we’ve just played Kansas City. Sleep will come, but not just yet. I’ve started reading some of the questions that have come into The Red Hand Files. I found yours, and I thought perhaps you could try this, it might be helpful.
Find a quiet spot where you can be alone and away from distractions, close your eyes, and picture your father. Then say these words, quietly or in your head -
You are my father
I am your daughter
I love you
I am sorry
You may feel uncomfortable or embarrassed when you do this because it seems from your question that you fundamentally believe that your father is gone, that his “ears and heart don’t exist anymore,” and that you are speaking to no one, a nothing, a void.
But perhaps, if you pay close attention, you may discover a part of you - a pulse of spiritual recognition, distant, hidden, neglected. This is the soul calling to you from beneath the compacted veneer of your unbelief. I believe, but I do not know, that this feeling is the eternalness of your father. I have spent nearly a decade in communion with this softly spoken presence - the impossibility of my sons, Arthur and dear Jethro - a faraway thing buried deep beneath my scepticism becoming an emergent belief.
I suspect your father will hear your words, but I do not know. At the very least, by acknowledging the sacred and mysterious nature of things, these words will impact the general condition of the world, not to mention your own injured heart. I believe we must take our subtle spiritual intuitions seriously and view them as the quintessence that underlies the ordinary world. The rejection of the sacred is the fundamental reason for our existential discontent. “I love you" and “I am sorry” spoken into the universe are two sentiments forever worth declaring.
It's 4am now, and I’ve been on the phone with a friend in London. He brings me the news. Kneecap are the new poster boys for freedom of expression; Jonny Greenwood has been cancelled for attempting to play with an Arab/Israeli artist; Farage has taken Runcorn and beyond; an Iranian terror plot has been foiled; and there is a dark and horrific story about a burning boy. The UK roils in its confusion, hypocrisy and discontent, yet all I can do at this brittle, late hour is miss my adopted homeland. I think of you, Amy, and your situation. I feel the answer to your question will always exist outside the world as it presents itself, beyond the matters of the day, distinct from the temporal. It will be found within the mysterious, the unsettled, and the sacred, that faraway and intangible place where truth and music and your father reside.
I hope you find some relief. I am sorry for your loss.
Love, Nick

Hunter Hearst Helmsley x Fem Reader- "New WWF Attitude"
The WWF’s Attitude era was an era of change.
No longer was the WWF appropriate for children of all ages to watch and cartoonish, the WWF’s Attitude era was edgier, bloodier, more violent, sexual and vulgar.
During the Attitude era, wrestlers who were babyfaces/good guys were no longer wholesome like Hulk Hogan, the Ultimate Warrior, Bret Hart and Ricky Steamboat.
Instead, babyface wrestlers during the Attitude era were antiheroes like Stone Cold Steve Austin and D Generation X.
Many wrestlers in the WWF had changed their gimmicks when the Attitude era emerged.
The aristocratic blueblood Hunter Hearst Helmsley became the denim jeans and leather jackets wearing Triple H making fellatio related insults while pointing at his crotch, the evil dentist Isaac Yankem and fake Diesel became the Undertaker’s brother Kane, and country singers RockaBilly and Jesse James would change their gimmicks and aesthetics form the New Age Outlaws together.
A few months before the WWF changed its logo and moniker to WWF Attitude, you were also changing your gimmick for the Attitude era.
At the end of 1997, you had your mind set on what you wanted to play for the WWF’s up-and-coming Attitude era.
You knew what you wanted to wear down to the ring.
However, you were unsure of what else you could do for your changing gimmick.
During the end of 1997, you were talking with your then boyfriend Hunter Hearst Helmsley off camera in a hotel room.
You and Hunter were discussing what you should do for your new wrestling gimmick.
You asked Hunter if you should act like Janet Wood in that “Three’s Company” episode where Janet puts on a blond wig and begins acting like a blond bimbo.
You’re definitely going to do some of the same things Janet does in that episode when she wears that blond wig, like fluff the bottom of your hair.
Maybe even look at your reflection while your hand holds up a tiny compact mirror.
Speaking of which, you asked Hunter if should speak with the same high pitched voice Janet puts on when she wears that blond wig with your new gimmick.
You definitely want to put on that voice Janet puts on when she wears that blond wig and black low cut dress, you even want to recreate things she’s said in that episode, but you’re not sure if that voice you put on will get you over with male fans.
Another question you asked Hunter was if you should have blond hair with your new gimmick and wear your hair like how Chrissy Snow on “Three’s Company” sometimes wore her hair.
Her hairstyles were adorable and would definitely fit your new gimmick.
It would be a little strange of you to be playing a bimbo yet you don’t have blond hair.
The most popular women in the WWF during the late 1990’s were always blonds like Sable, Debra and Sunny.
Hunter suggested all of this needs to be discussed with the creative staff and not with him.
Indeed, you had that planned out to talk with them.
At the end of 1997, you talked with the WWF’s creative staff backstage about what you should do with your new gimmick, if you should act and sound a certain way.
You’ve wondered and asked the WWF’s creative staff if you should wear the same short outdated “dolphin shorts” as they’re called women on “Three’s Company” would wear.
Since your gimmick was influenced by “Three’s Company” which was a show known as “jiggle TV”, you wondered and asked the WWF’s creative staff if you should dress like women that were on other jiggle TV shows at the time like “Charlie’s Angels”, “Wonder Woman” and others.
You even wonder if you should do moments in the WWF inspired by other jiggle TV like those other listed shows.
You’re definitely not going to do that weird snort Chrissy Snow did when she laughed.
Some of the long sleeved outfits Janet Wood wore on “Three’s Company” were ugly, ugly enough to be ripped off of you during bra & panties matches.
But some women during the Attitude era wore ugly, tacky outfits.
Speaking of tacky, you won’t wear those outdated long sleeved leotards women on “Three’s Company” wore even to wrestle in them in the ring.
During the WWF’s New Generation era when you were the valet for the blueblood aristocrat Hunter Hearst Helmsley, you would discuss with the WWF’s creative staff over what you should wear down to the ring with him.
