he finds it slightly surprising at first that a student is actually willing to do something like that intentionally, right in front of him. it fades into amusement that the student believes he can truly, completely win you over. its genuinely so unnerving the way jade acts especially when the boy is being over the top right in front of him. he knows a lot of people don't particularly like him, but the fact that he would show that is funny.

like i have mentioned previously with jade and his jealousy, he always finds some way to above and beyond what that guy is doing for you. it becomes some sort of rivalry between them, but jade just finds ways to do it better. besides, jade has his own ways and tricks to making him mess up or make some fool of himself somehow most of his attempts look quite embarrassing on the boys behalf.

when he finds out that he took your first kiss he's smiles and is like "oh is that so? how cute fufufu" bless the poor students soul. but seriously, jade will not stop his advances, you and the student aren't even officially together so what's really stopping him? he's more than willing to do what it takes to have him get what he wants, and it just happens to be you.

deuce takes it more immaturely a bit, since he tends to not think thoroughly about what he's going to do he just acts. so, any time when that student is by you being openly flirtatious, he's always there trying to do something to steer the attention away. it always gets him so riled up when the student smiles condescendingly at him knowing full well he's trying to get together with you, when deuce has always had his heart set on you.

will go out of his way more and more to do just that, even if it's something as simple as getting a seat next to you or doing some act of service to you. internally begging but his face clearly shows “don't give this guy the time of day PLEASE” deuce believes you just deserve better and even if he isn't perfect, he knows that he will always do his best to do things that go past your expectations.

in comparison to the suitor, i feel like deuce would definitely have more pure intentions with you— whereas it feels like that student had only amped up his boldness to you out of pure spite and mockery of him. deuce just genuinely wants you and him happily together, y'know— without this guy constantly going after you and show that he can certainly treat you much better than that guy.

feels a sharp pain in his chest when you admit the boy was your first kiss, he tries to be a supportive friend and be happy for you but it's so hard for him in that moment. he desperately wishes that were him. he still stays determined even after, you and the guy aren't actually together- he still will continue to have you give him a chance. he'll prove it!!

silver

he doesn't want to be one for being irrational and being aggressive towards others. but he can't help the way he feels and the anger and resentment towards the boy build up in his chest when he is so obviously trying to win you over right in front of silver. he grits his teeth and gives a stern look; he doesn't say much first but he sometimes may make an attempt to get in between the two of you with his body.

silver doesn't want to feel like he is interfering with you or your happiness though if you find yourself liking the attention and affection from the boy. he loves seeing you happy, it's really all he wants from you— but the fact that it's from someone else in a romantic sense breaks his heart.

so, he is stuck between doing something or silently watching from the side. it depends on how he is feeling or how far the student is willing to go I’d think. at the end of the day though he is solemnly protective over you and is willing to do drastic measures to make sure you're kept safe and away from what he believes could cause you pain, even emotionally with this guy.

knowing that he stole your first kiss did hurt— it felt like he couldn't compete as it felt like he had really won you over. but even then, he never stopped wanting to pursue you. he couldn't help it, he still is stubborn and isn't willing to exactly accept defeat. he'll still find himself actively going out of his way to have you see him instead. besides, he thinks you deserve better and he's more than willing to be that for you.

As a fellow RWBY fan and fan of Jaune I wanted to ask. Do you have any headcanons for Buff Jaune? I'll die on the hill that that man is buff and I'd say his current volume 7-9 look shows off how muscular he's definitely gotten. I wonder how working out and fighting affects muscle growth when things like aura are thrown into the mix.

Wouldn't his huge aura reserves mean his muscles heal super fast allowing him to see muscle gains faster than most people?

Because aura let's you take more hits, heals you etc shouldn't Jaune, someone whose able to increase his own and others aura and semblance be able to workout/fight for far longer than even the characters whose whole thing is being strong/resilient?

For me I already thought Jaune was buff ever since we got to see him in a dress in volume 2, at the very least he looked really athletic back then AND that was when he just started out training with pyrrha. And I agree he really looked like he filled out quite a bit in his volume 7-9 look which I do have some headcanons for 

Aura healing sore muscles thus allowing faster and better gains makes sense !! And that’s even without taking in account some things when it comes to jaune’s conditions. First that he has a really LARGE aura pool considering that amped weiss aura all the way back to 100% back in volume 5 without even breaking his own aura

And secondly his semblance it’s literally all about amplifying the effects of aura and semblances beyond what they normally could do !! Like when he helped Ren cover half a literal train in his emotion-masking semblance. Plus it’s proved that he can use his semblance on himself to amplify his own aura and thus recharge much faster that way

AND aura it’s already something that heals and reinforces the body by itself but if Jaune can amplify his own aura and what it can do beyond the limits …… then our favorite blonde is in for a lot of good surprises 

Also Jaune only discovered his semblance in volume 5, I like to think he has plenty more room to grow ( physically as well ) when it comes to his semblance effects and what he can do with it ( and what it can do to him ). For example Weiss semblance !! She was really proficient with her semblance ever since the beginning of volume 1, but she also learned summoning with it post vol-3 + Another example is Ren ! He probably unlocked his semblance even earlier than weiss and yet he unlocked the ability to not only mask emotions but to also sense them as well

The point I’m trying to make basically is that semblances can evolve and grow, and that is even more likely to happen to jaune since he unlocked it fairly recently and everything

My headcanon + idea is that he has a lot more practice with his semblance plus more exercise and thus even more buff in volume 7 once they reach atlas and start training with the ace-ops in the academy !! It’s kinda poetic that his power not only helps others but also himself given his late but hearty start

In my head Jaune could get really buff fairly fast AND be completely oblivious to how much filling out and bulking up !! Like jaune get’s stuck with the cross-guard duty for good PR basically right ? that would leave him plenty of room for training

afterwards he uses that sweet-time to lift weights in exercise in one of the gyms and giving all he got to grow stronger. And afterwards he lets his aura take care of the soreness and everything ….. and then he has the idea to boost himself while resting and it work’s to a great effect !! his aura was already full since he didn’t have to fight yet that day because of his mission AND with his semblance it goes beyond and it feels amazing

It’s like getting a massage + sauna and it makes him feel even more pumped even more after all the weights he lifted !! It makes him feel warmer which also a bonus given how cold it is in atlas even while inside

BUT since he healed so fast, it makes him mighty hungry so he ends up eating a lot as well ( thus unknowingly helping him bulk up even more ) And then later in the day he trains even more sparring against the ace-ops with his team !! Afterwards his use semblance again to amplify his aura as it’s heals his muscles denser and bigger than before. Repeating that routine over and over again, aside from when he get's to go on other missions or outings

I could see him making months of progress in weeks !! bulking up a lot and not noticing much until it get’s to the point that he need a whole new wardrobe and set of armor because they’re getting really snug and tight on him

For reference he would get bigger than cardin ! Twice the bully’s size and then some >:D

Also How funny would it be ? if after Beacon fell, Cardin transferred to Atlas huntsmen academy quite a while after the gang reached the city ? Because it took him a while to reach over the embargo even with his father connections

He gets there with his team feeling even better than the invention of sliced bread, all prideful and sure of himself ( a bit too much ) !! Then he learns that team JNR and RWBY are there as well …. He’s quite eager for a warm and happy reunion where he gets to (try and fail) lord over them again

But then he learns that they are already fully licensed huntsmen by general ironwood himself, and that Jaune now completely dwarfs him in terms of size and strength. The bully’s left feeling like the fabric of the universe is ripping apart and nothing makes sense anymore

It's raining outside and I'm waiting for a freelance client's contract and payment to go through, so I think I gotta make this Tumblr Brain Dump time. Wallpaper images are of this blog's main couple because some of it is about them. Long incoherent thoughts below the cut.

Getting Lost in Sunk Costs

I'm kinda souring on the idea of writing this fanfic anytime soon, if at all. Perhaps I overhyped it when I first had the idea. Regardless, it hasn't progressed much, and I think I may have had the wrong motivations to want to write it. One was feeling like my interpretation of a certain character wasn’t as legit because that interpretation had few or no fics associated with it. Now, that may actually be a great reason to write one for some folks (and that’s fine!). But of course something doesn’t need to be fanfic-ized to be a legitimate interpretation or enthusiasm. 

And I honestly think I’d be better at telling (such as analysis, which I think I've done well on this blog) instead of showing (creative fiction, which I don't do beyond shiposty skits) what I’m interested in when it comes to these things. That only applies to writing, though. I’m way better at songs/lyrics (or writing about songs/lyrics) and designy things than fiction. I once wrote and self-published a novel, which was a really long and tough process and was then wildly misinterpreted by people who should have known better. (The best thing about it was its cover and soundtrack.) I kinda don’t want to deal with all that again.

The other poor excuse for motivation I thought of was sort of a sunk-cost thing. All of my enthusiasms tend to result in me responding to them in creative original ways. I've responded to music I've loved throughout my life by learning to play instruments, write and record songs, play in groups with others, and produce live shows. I've responded to my favorite commercial fiction with the aforementioned novel/soundtrack. I've even done that with hobbies, responding in this decade to all the time I invested in D&D by creating a fantasy atlas and then writing/recording/releasing seven songs by my favorite original character. (I've flogged the latter two here many times so I'll spare my mutuals the repetitive links.)

I think I'd unconsciously (and then consciously) been trying to come up with a way to creatively respond to the substantial time and thought I'd invested in BG3—something I fell into under very specific circumstances, despite being indifferent to video games for decades—and I thought a fic would do that. Creating my own heroes in D&D was one thing, but in BG3 they get to move and (sometimes) talk and fuck! That warrants a serious response, right (don't answer that)? Never mind that I've already had a lifetime of wildly disparate and dubious attempts at plugging into various communities both online and IRL (all long stories for other venues and times). And never mind that I've already responded (maybe as much as I should have) with not only one remake of an old song but also this entire blog.

So I guess the sunk cost fallacy was alive and thriving at LTB HQ when I thought I'd write a fic. And a few of my very kind mutuals said they'd read it. But I think I've gotta shelve it for now (and maybe forever), and I think those folks will understand. I'm just not sure it's the best way for me to express what I want to about my beloved OCs, especially because it wouldn't (to me) feel 100% original. Not in the way my fantasy atlas does, at least—and that has the added advantage of being these OCs home turf, because outside of BG3 I really don't prefer the Forgotten Realms. I know none of that has to matter with fic, I get that. But I'm just not feeling it. It's not something the muse requires of me. 

I could make it a song, though…

And Now for Something Completely Different

Conversely, I'm still pretty amped for BG3’s upcoming Photo Mode. I know it's been promoted in hilariously salacious ways, but I'm actually looking forward to creating images of my blog's first couple (or any of my other BG3 ships) that aren't kiss- or sex-related. Not to be a prude or anything, because I don't think sexy images (or the people who love them) are bad, and of course this site is primarily fueled by such things, but at my point in life I feel like I want to create images that represent couples with more than cutesy puppy love going for them.

Now, I know that a couple needs a whole lotta cutesy puppy love at the beginning for their relationship to endure through decades of everything else that goes with being a couple. I guess I just find it repetitive, especially when there are so many other ways to convey a relationship's mutual affection, commitment, loyalty, etc. I was only half-joking with posts like "Hecklers Beware," you know? 

I've never commissioned sexy art of my characters and/or the infatuation-stage of their relationships because none of my OCs are actually shipped together in their original 5e incarnations, and I no longer feel compelled to share much about what and who they do that with in, say, BG3. Also at this point it kinda feels private, in that nobody else on here needs to see that—and depending on the character/ship, substantial amounts of people do not want to see that. I dunno. The times that I did do lots of "look at my pixel dolls in love" posts now seem like overcompensation for preferring a particular character ship that still feels relatively uncommon in that character's niche fandom. That might be a very silly thing to believe considering I've rightly spilled many pixels encouraging people to believe the exact opposite.

But like I said, I may have had the wrong motivation. There's a particular kind of knee-jerk, reactively defiant behavior that comes from insecurity, and I'm trying really hard to not indulge that in any context. I have a weakness for melodrama—I've been extremely susceptible to it in the past, both online and off—and constantly worrying about what other people who'm you've never met think about you is no way to go through life. Anyway this all feels quite convoluted—and while it's still worth posting, I think I'd better stop, not least because I have Actual Work to do today. So thanks for your patience. My OC posts/deep dives/shitposts/one-offs will continue as dictated by the muse. If it's compelling for me, it won't be bullshit for you.

Estivating animals such as lungfish and amphibians form cocoon structures to reduce evaporative water loss in the dry season (17–19). African lungfish live inside their mucus cocoon for months or even years (20). Previous studies described the cocoon of anuran and urodele amphibians as shed epithelial layers, whereas the lungfish cocoon was described as a translucent brownish dried mucus structure (17, 19, 20–23). Estivating lungfish are likely more vulnerable to pathogen attack since they are immobile and continuous skin mucus secretion stops once the cocoon is formed. Thus, we hypothesized that the cocoon may have important immunological functions thus far undescribed. Our histological observations revealed that the lungfish cocoon is not a dead, dry mucus layer but, instead, is a living tissue with a well-defined cellular structure. The thickness of the lungfish cocoon was approximately 350 to 900 μm, although this may vary from body site to body site, and the distance between the epidermis and the cocoon ranged from 15 to 173 μm (Fig. 3A). The cocoon was composed of different cell types including goblet cells, epithelial cells, endothelial cells, and immune cells (Fig. 3B). Transmission electron microscopy confirmed the presence of goblet cells with many secretory mucus granules within the cocoon (fig. S3D). Moreover, abundant nests of cells were observed surrounded by long channels lined by double-layered squamous cells. A series of monolayered vessels running parallel and perpendicular to the main channel were identified. These nests of cells contained endothelium-lined vessels that could potentially serve to transport cells into and within the cocoon (Fig. 3B). Channels were not filled with mucosal secretions based on periodic acid–Schiff staining (Fig. 3C). The cocoon contained abundant granulocytic cells (fig. S2A) that were MPO+, indicating transmigration of granulocytes into the cocoon [fig. S2B; modeled in Fig. 2 (C and D)]. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed that during terrestrialization, the flattened smooth epidermis of freshwater fish (Fig. 3E) became a disrupted surface covered by the cocoon where lungfish cells and groups of bacterial cells were observed

Free-swimming lungfish skin is characterized by a columnar mucosal epithelium. (A) Large numbers of multipotent stem cells with alkaline phosphatase activity (fig. S1) can be observed at the interphase between the epidermis and the dermis. Granulocyte deposits in the tissue reservoirs of free-swimming lungfish become mobilized to the skin via peripheral circulation when lungfish begin to sense lack of food and water. (B) Skin remodeling begins, with increasing numbers of granulocytes infiltrating the dermal and epidermal layers resulting in loosening of the basal membrane and inflammation. (C) The cocoon then starts to form by detachment and shedding of the inflamed epidermis. Many granulocytes are part of the cocoon, and they produce ETs in response to the high microbial load. Epithelial cells, goblet cells, and antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are also present in the cocoon. The pool of stem cells starts to regenerate the epidermis, while granulocytes continue to arrive from reservoirs maintaining an inflammatory state. (D) In the next stages of estivation (end of the induction phase), the lungfish skin shows complete flattening of the epidermis and goblet cell exhaustion. The cocoon has several layers derived from multiple rounds of epidermal shedding and regeneration, and stem cell numbers are severely reduced. Granulocytes in the cocoon continue to undergo ETosis and are still elevated in the epidermis and dermis compared to free-swimming controls. It is unknown whether the cocoon continues to thicken beyond 2 weeks after terrestrialization
