Any theories on why the portals from the pony world to the human world turn ponies into humans and dragons into dogs?

I honestly don't know 🙃 I'm so useful! 

Canonically, Star Swirl created the crystal mirrors and portals to other worlds. At first I believed he programmed them to transform creatures so that they'd blend into the other worlds. 

The other non-crystal portals seen in Equestria Girls were created after the portal in the statue (which is connected to the Crystal Mirror) was cracked, causing its magic to seep out. So it does make sense that those would still transform creatures, like the quicksand portal in Spring Breakdown. 

So me thinks the spell that created the magic in the portal is programmed to do that. 

If that's not the case, then it doesn't make sense why they would turn into humans and dogs specifically. Because if the reason for their transformation is because there was little to no magic in the human world (before the events of the first film), then it would make more logical sense for them to turn into a regular pony and lizard. Or for them to stay in their regular forms, but they can't use their magic. Instead of changing their entire species 😂

Also, since ponies and dragons have the same level of sapience, why would one turn into a sapient creature (human) and one a less sapient creature (dog)?

I don't believe that there's a logical reason for any of this. I think that the only reason for Spike to be a dog is for merchandise reasons. A similar thing happens in the Movie, where Spike turns into a pufferfish instead of a seadragon (although there is concept art of him turning into a seadragon). It's most likely for merchandise reasons. 

The people who worked on EG probably realized after a while that they accidentally wrote themselves into a corner when it came to Spike turning into a dog, because as far as I know Spike is the only dragon character to be shown in the human world, or have a human world counterpart. They knew if they showed other dragon character in EG, people would start asking questions...

Creatures from the pony world that have human counterparts are:

Ponies

Changelings

Diamond Dogs

Gremlins

Probably some others I can't remember. 

I'm sure that any creature that's equine in shape would turn into a human. Imagine if the Young Six went through the portal.

Ocellus = human

Smolder = canine

Yona = human, presumably 

Gallus = ?

Silverstream = ?

If we're going by the Star Swirl programmed the portals to transform creatures theory, then maybe he had the portal turn dragons into canines because he created it before he found out dragons were sapient. 

This is a stupid explanation, but... what else could it be 🙃 It wasn't written to make sense, it was written to sell toys!

MLP + EG Explaining:The School of Friendship was built during a longer timeskip than what one may believe

Since I still see people wonder how was the School of Friendship built in such a short period of time, I decided to make this analysis to explain how it wasn't exactly like that. The "Equestria Girls" series will also be used as reference.

Season 8 opens with this scene that's meant to recap the events of the movie and give some form of closure to others (Tempest's fate).

And judging by how the dialogue is played here,we can assume this is taking place right after the movie is over.

The scene ends with this shot after Twilight announces her idea to open a school where they can teach friendship before it cuts to the intro.

After the intro is over,the scene opens with Twilight and Spike at Celestia's school from Canterlot. And Celestia introduces Twilight to EEA.

Twilight Sparkle:Okay,Spike,looks like we have a presentation to make.

Even with Twilight's tendency to overthink stuff,this couldn't have taken longer than a few days to get done before going to the EEA council.

Twilight Sparkle:Then please,join us for Friends and Family Day. It'll be the perfect time to see our progress!

Now,this is not something you say when you invite someone to come to a place that doesn't exist,which means the school was already standing before this moment happened.

The remaining question is WHEN was the School of Friendship built,and the answer is that a long period of time got cut out during the intro.

Now we'll head to "Equestria Girls" to support that statement.

The "Spring Breakdown" special also makes references to the movie (Storm's staff). Which is used to solve the problem of the episode.

But there are also two details that make this special chronologically fit in the narrative before the events of season 8.

1. The School of Friendship doesn't exist by the time Sunset,Sci-Twi,and human Rainbow Dash arrive in Ponyville.

2. Spike still has no wings.

He is supposed to get them in the 11th episode of season 8,"Molt Down".

The next one isn't that relevant but I think it's still worth mentioning.

In the "Sunset's Backstage Pass" special,Sunset is trapped in a time loop and seeks help from Princess Twilight.

Twilight Sparkle:Sunset,I've been doing some research,and it looks like you've found another long lost Equestrian artifact.

This moment is important because it confirms that Twilight had the time she needed to do any research on the situation.

Twilight rarely does stuff not related to the school once she has it. And even when she does appear in an episode not focused on it,the school may still get a mention ("Best Gift Ever","Rainbow Roadtrip").

Now one may argue that Equestria Girls was never canon to Friendship is Magic,which is still a pretty valid opinion to have if you ask me. But still...even if FIM can exist on its own,Equestria Girls cannot logically exist without the main series unless there are some MAJOR adjustments being made (because it's been always tied to it since the very beginning).

And whether you want to believe the winter season in "Best Gift Ever" and the final EG shorts that make up "Holidays Unwrapped" is one and the same it's also up for interpretation.

I finished watching Equestria Girls: Spring Breakdown for the first time and I loved it 😭

Some of the plot lines didn't make sense to me, but overall it was a lot of fun and I ADORED how the eqg mane 6 got to visit the pony universe

But man oh man, when are these girls gonna catch a break?? Can't they get ONE vacation that doesn't go to shit, PLEASE😭

I know you're embarrassed to talk about mlp, but am I the only one who finds it WEIRD that Spike and Twilight didn't know about the Molt until Smolder had to tell Spike? Wasn't Spike learning about dragons since he made friends with Ember?

You know… I came to the (very obvious) conclusion a while back that the reason the show started to go downhill after the movie is because the majority of the writers for season 8 and 9 were completely new writers who never bothered to do research on the pre-established characters and lore. Like yeah, they made a lot of references and callbacks to previous seasons, but when it came to character writing and continuity they didn't know what they were doing.

And the writers that have been with the show for a while like Josh Harber had become burned out by season 8.

Oh, about your question. You're right, it doesn't make any sense that both Twilight and Spike wouldn't know about the Molt.

Ever since the season 6 episode Gauntlet of Fire, Twilight and Spike had started learning about dragons from Ember.

In the season 7 premiere Twilight says this:

Twilight Sparkle: Starlight will love it in the Dragon Lands. In her letters, Ember said dragons do a lot of fun things. The Feast of Fire, the Dragon Bowl, Claw-chella.

They also establish in the season 7 episode Triple Threat that Spike was now the royal ambassador to the Dragon Lands:

Spike: Reason number one – I invited Dragon Lord Ember to Ponyville today. Reason two – the Dragon Lord is a dragon. Reason three – she's coming here to learn more about friendship.

Twilight Sparkle: According to Ember's letters, the dragons are trying to be friends, but competing is in their nature, and it's leading to more and more fights.

Spike: Which brings me to reason number four. The Dragon Lord wants my advice, and as the new official Equestrian friendship ambassador to the dragons, I can't let her down.

In the season 7 finale Spike is able to recognize and name a dragon sport:

Spike: Good thing you brought the official Equestrian friendship ambassador to the dragons to help you navigate our customs. Like our favorite sport – gorge surfing!

In the Equestria Girls special Spring Breakdown, Spike is telling the group a funny story about what it was like to attend a dragon wedding:

Spike: ...and that's the last time I ever went to a dragon wedding!

Both Twilights, Sunset Shimmer, and Rainbow Dash: [laugh]

It's unknown if he was there for diplomatic reasons, or if he was invited, but he was there. 

So even though they never show it on screen (for some reason) it's been implied through dialogue that both Spike and Twilight have learned a lot about dragons since season 6. Spike travels to the Dragon Lands for various reasons, and Ember sends them letters with information on dragon society and culture. 

So it makes no logical sense that both Twilight and Spike didn't know about the Molt. The Molt is basic dragon puberty. 

Also in that same episode, Spike was able to recognize and name the pimple that he got:

Rarity: Is there something wrong with your face?

Spike: [sighs] It's a stone scale. It isn't magical or anything like the call of the Dragon Lord. It's just... red. And itchy. [groans] And embarrassing.

It's kind of unbelievable that both Spike and Twilight wouldn't have learned about the Molt until that point. Smolder had to tell Spike what the Molt was… 

Smolder: [laughs] Wow! I have seen some pretty bad molts in my time, but yours takes the cake!

Spike: Molts?

Smolder: The molt? Super painful stone scales, fire burps, uncontrollable volume shifts? It's all part of growing up dragon. Congrats!

…

Spike: No-no-no-no-no. The last time I grew up, I turned into a giant greedy monster.

Smolder: Greed-induced bigness. That's totally different. The molt is completely normal. Every dragon goes through it. Pretty soon, you'll leave and strike out on your own.

And Twilight was genuinely shocked to see Spike had sprouted wings.

Twilight Sparkle: Spike?! How did you get wings?!

…

Twilight Sparkle: This is amazing! I didn't know if you'd ever get wings. I'm so happy for you. Does it have something to do with this molt you were talking about?

Spike: [sighs] It's what's been going on with me. The breakout, the fire burps. The molt is when dragons get older and start to change.

Also up until that point, Spike was the only dragon in the show without wings.

Except for this guy:

Spike was the odd dragon out because he lacked wings. You think at some point of Twilight and Spike learning about dragons throughout season 6 to the movie that Spike's lack of wings would've come up in some way, and Ember or some other dragon would've explained to Spike and/or Twilight what the Molt was.

I can only imagine that they wanted Spike getting wings to be a surprise to the characters as well as the audience, so them knowing about it beforehand wouldn't work. But… them not knowing about it beforehand doesn't work, if you've been keeping up with the show.

In conclusion the post-movie writers didn't give a crap about previous continuity.

And didn't bother to proofread their own work.

So, how does the Equestria Girls timeline go? I assume everything up to Forgotten Friendship is in the same school year, then Rollercoaster of Friendship happens in the summer after that. Spring Breakdown occurs in Spring so it is in the next school year. And after that Holidays Unwrapped happens in December after that. So it implies Equestria Girls 1 to Forgotten Friendship is in 10th grade, Rollercoaster of Friendship in Summer, Spring Breakdown in 11th grade, and Holidays Unwrapped in 12th.

So re: canon FUCK the timeline. Like they're canonically in Senior Year during EQG 1 there shouldn't be a new school year. Personally I'd just switch Spring Breakdown and Rollercoaster of Friendship, the latter happening around or after Graduation. Holidays Unwrapped is the odd one out because there's no way in hell that it happens in Christmastime the first year, so it'd have to be a second year but there's no way that'd make sense unless Principal Celestia goes 'Hey there were too many Magical Disturbances interrupting your learning time and we're not going to Harry Potter this shit by shrugging and saying exams are canceled y'all can move up. No you have to actually learn and pass so you're held back.". Not to mention it's a big skip from summer to winter again.

Then again the math in this show's timeline is a hot mess because if you try to math it Applebloom appeared from the aether and also the pony counterparts are in their late 20s/early 30s which makes any pony/human relationships REAL sketch.

If they really did have Sci-Twi stay in Crystal Prep instead of joining the Rainbooms, that would make it kinda difficult for the later movies that do put her in a major lead role like with Legend of Everfree, Spring Breakdown, and the Cider Louise Fools segment of Hollidays Unwrapped. It would be pretty hard to show Sci-Twi dealing with her Midnight Sparkle trauma in the former since that does put them in a writing corner to either have Crystal Prep also go to Camp Everfree (but that's just causes cast bloat issues with having 12 main characters if the Shadowbolts are tagging along, plus on whether Sci-Twi would even still get geode powers due to not being in the Rainbooms' group) or have it purely be a Crystal Prep focused movie/special (but that's mean we'd have to not include the spin off's main lead Sunset and the rest of the Rainbooms in it, which would mean Sunset wouldn't be able to help Sci-Twi with her trauma).

Yeah, I guess that's true. Sci-Twi's character arc is alright and Legend of Everfree's plot wouldn't work without her.

Though I saw someone in the comments for the Friendship Games deleted scenes saying it could also work with her staying at CPA. They imagined the beginning of a new Equestria Girls 4, where the Humane 6 are vibing at CHS when Sci-Twi comes running from CPA and tells them about a huge new conflict, and it takes place at a different school/not school altogether just like the actual 4th movie, where we explore the human world beyond CHS. And yeah, kudos to that commenter for this neat idea tho.

That or let it be a Crystal Prep centered movie/special as to not overwhelm the writing with 12 main characters. I think it being a Crystal Prep focused movie/special would be interesting and it'll help develop the Crystal Prep girls in their change of hearts (cuz we see in the deleted scenes abt their views on CHS students changing *looking at Indigo Zap's dialogue and Lemon Zest's friendship with Vinyl*)

How would you rank the Equestria Girls movies and specials? I hope you have a very Happy New Year!

1- Forgotten Friendship - Honestly. This special does have problems, but its an incredible breakdown of Sunset Shimmer as a character. She gets pushed to an extreme, and the stakes are incredibly personal, not necessarily grand. I love it.2 - Rainbow Rocks - They have a goddamn battle of the bands to save the world. Every song here is better than in the actual MLP movie I will take NO criticism on that. SUNSET SHIMMER RISES3 - Rollercoaster of Friendship - It’s the rarijack gay shit slice of life special. Come ON that's good. Caramel apple girlfriends forever4 - Spring Breakdown - It’s such a fun chill one where they go on spring break and then their goddamn ship crashes and they VISIT EQUESTRIA! We get scitwi pony which is super damn cute5 - Legend of Everfree - Its so damn fruity with sunset n’ scitwi, the powers they get are so fun! Also the credits song is so fucking pretty I relisten to it often <36 - Sunset's backstage pass - TIMELOOP STORYYY Sometimes I rewatch this super often. Sunpie heaven, rly damn sweet.7 - Friendship Games - The scitwi genesis. So damn fruity and great, wonderful songs, and we get a corrupted twilight for once! Good times.8 - Dance Magic - Its just a rly cute romp of Rarity showcasing her insane artistic drive. I love it.9 - Movie Magic - Pretty cute tbh! I like that Sunset’s power ponies outfit is the villain’s outfit, heh. 10 - Mirror Magic - The villain is a bit lame but Starlight cameo is so damn cute. Her and Sunset def got a wonderful cool chemistry! 11 - Equestria girls 1 - Cute movie!! I like it. Its a bit super childish and overall goofy, but a nice beginning to this nonsense franchise.

So, what do you think of the deleted scenes in Friendship Games? Looks like they were planning on having a subplot for Sunset feeling homesick for Equestria (which would finally answer the long standing question on if she stays in the human world or moves back to Equestria) and having Sci-Twi stay at CPA with the reformed Shadowbolts. Would those deleted scenes have made the movie better?

Thinking about it now, I think I would've preferred the deleted scenes. We would've finally got something about Sunset being home-sick, Princess Twilight would've had a better role than being at the end of the movie. I would've been fine with Sci-Twi going back with the Shadowbolts but again I think Twilight transferred to balance out the Mane 6 with the HuMane 6. The transition from Princess Twilight being the protagonist to passing the torch to Sunset would've been perfect. For Sci Twi, I like her, but she doesn't really serve anything to the magic plot especially with her stance on magic (according to Spring Breakdown). I feel that Sci Twi was just inserted to replace Princess Twilight permanently to balance out Friendship is Magic with Equestria Girls since Sunset is no Twilight and Twilight's the center focus of the FIM franchise.
