2. Where do you get your fic ideas?

i don't even know myself tbh.. i usually take inspiration from every piece of media i consume, like music or novels or films. but other times i just . get a random idea, or a piece of dialogue, or come up with a very specific scene while i'm doing something (it often happens while at work which is a NIGHTMARE) and even tho some of those end up being scratched, others do turn into proper fic ideas <3

12. Do you outline your fics? If yes, how detailed are your outlines? How far do you stray from them?

always!! it's the best way to avoid writer's block!! and also i just like planning, and i need to know how a story's gonna end before i start writing it

and honestly it depends!! the outline for making ghosts + the fucked up road trip fic are both super detailed and vvvv long, but the ones for oby and nothing happens are . more of a bulleted list . brief and straight to the point

i do tend to stray from them often and quite far.. but that's NOT my fault, it's my characters'!!! still, the foundations of an idea usually stay the same, as well as the ending once i've decided on one

22. Do you title your fics before before, during, or after the writing process? How do you come up with titles?

usually after, although there've been a couple of instances of it happening during (making ghosts, nothing happens) and once before (all the violence)

and i've no idea lmao. sometimes i use song lyrics, bc it's easy and u can always find the perfect one for a story, but other times i dig deeper and come up with them myself after . thinking and brainrotting a lot about a story (this one doesn't happen as often tho </3). in general, i try to choose Good titles, i want them to feel and sound right, and to fit the fic as much as possible

now that it's posted, it's definitely nothing happens. the fact that it was meant for me and my eyes only says enough, but it just . comes very easy to me, and it's the story i enjoy writing the most rn

I used to love binging series as a kid, but these days I am very picky when it comes to starting a new book series, so I would say I prefer standalones, unless someone whose tastes align with mine highly recommends a series, or the author is someone whose past books I've enjoyed.

11 - the best book u have ever read?

Listen, it's Tumblr and everybody loves it, but I have to say it again - Six of Crows duology by Leigh Bardugo will always be one of my favourites. Nothing in YA could ever top this tbh.

The PJO and HOO series has also really stood out to me and shaped my younger years, and with the new show, I feel the brainrot coming back in haha, so I'd say that for me, these are the best middle-grade books out there!

25 - a book that had u bawling ur eyes out?

I don't know if it's just me, but I actually don't cry at books much (at least not on the outside, because there sure have been times where I was screaming, crying, and throwing up internally lol).

I did tear up a couple times at a few lines in This Is How You Lose the Time War (will elaborate more on it in the next later question), and I can also tell you that the cliffhanger ending of Mark of Athena by Rick Riordan genuinely stressed me out (I was amongst those that agonisingly waited a whole year for the next book), and if I wasn't in shock from it, 10-11 year old me probably would've cried too 😂 Still haven't recovered from that by the way even though I have long finished the Heroes of Olympus series lmao

In no particular order, I recommend that if you haven't already read these, go check them out!

This Is How You Lose the Time War by Amal El-Mohtar and Max Gladstone.

A short, epistolary sci-fi novel about two time-travel agents from rival organisations, who write each other letters scattered throughout time.

It's way more character-driven than plot-driven: the novel itself focuses more on the characterisation of the main characters and their evolving dynamic, instead of the sci-fi aspects itself.

It's so good, and if pretty prose is your thing you'll also enjoy the writing style of this!

My Roommate Is A Vampire by Jenna Levine

A light, fluffy contemporary vampire romance that I'm buddy-reading with a friend right now hehe

I haven't finished it yet but this book is very entertaining. If you want something fun and light-hearted, I'd say to check it out!

It's a little cringe, yes, but it's the fun kind of cringe. The love interest is adorable

His Dark Materials by Philipp Pullman

Okay, I know everyone has at least heard of this one too. And admittedly it's been a (very long) while since I've read it too but I remember loving it so much in my childhood (and being seriously hooked on the movie adaptation, The Golden Compass) so I have to recommend it for the nostalgia

I think it's a seriously underrated book, and even though it's technically a children's series, it still appeals to people of all ages and I think that's really rare these days

Breaking Tommy out of jail was not easy.

Between trying to get the Peaky Blinders to listen to him, and coming up with a plan (which, though he hated to admit it, was hard to do simply because Tommy was always the one with the plan) he was not even sure that this would turn out the way he desired.

Especially since they had already started shooting at one another, which definitely was not part of the plan. But of course, something had been fucked up, which meant they were all guns blazing now. Alfie supposed that he should have already accounted for the fact that they were definitely going to end up using bullets to get their way out.

"Fuckin' hell." Alfie snapped, ducking back behind one of the walls. "Christ above."

"You rang?" said a voice.

Alfie turned around and saw Tommy standing there, bruised and a bit bloody but smiling at him nonetheless. While Alfie wanted to kiss the living shit out of him, despite the fact that bullets and shouts were whirling all around them, instead, what he said was:

"Where the fuck did you come from?"

Tommy rolled his eyes. "I missed you too, Alfie." he waved his gun. "Arthur broke me out, gave me my gun. What's the plan?" Alfie assumed that Arthur was still okay, based on the very calm way Tommy was talking about him. Count on Tommy Shelby to keep his head during a shootout.

"The plan, mate, is fucked to hell, innit?" he snapped. "We gotta get out of here."

"Well, what are you doing hiding then?"

"I have yet to hear a fucking thank you."

Tommy grabbed him by the jacket and pulled him forward for a heated kiss. For a brief moment, the world quieted. Like the ridiculous romances in the novels Alfie read, the world zeroed in on just the feeling of their lips pressed against one another.

When Tommy pulled away, the world got noisy once more. "Thank you."

"All right," Alfie grunted, patting Tommy's face lightly. "Let's fucking get you out of here."

Putting on their bravest faces, Tommy and Alfie threw themselves into the gunfire, shooting and cursing and fighting their way out of the building, thankful to see that at least Tommy and Alfie's most trusted advisors, family, or friends, were making it out safely as well.

When they made it out and got to the car, Tommy ripped open the door on the driver's seat and got inside, Alfie on the other side.

"Are we waiting for the others?" Tommy asked, starting the car.

"You fuckin' out of your mind?" Alfie roared. "They'll meet us at the checkpoint, let's get the fuck out of here!"

Tommy, bless him, actually grinned and pressed on the gas, getting them out and away as quick as he possibly could. After a few minutes had passed, Alfie saw Tommy intense his shoulders and sigh, using his free hand to grab Alfie's.

"Thank you Alfie," he said again. "But now what are we meant to do?"

"Keep driving mate," Alfie kissed his hand tenderly. "We're going to live on the fucking countryside, just you and me. On the run for the rest of our lives, but they can't find men who don't exist."

Tommy laughed softly. "Sounds like a good life."

Alfie kissed his hand again--he would run wherever he had to, to stay with Tommy. So they continued to drive, the unknown spreading out before them, but at least they were together.

How have you been? I hope you're happy and that the writing of papers has been going well!

As to your question about the tropes, there's been many that I thought I didn't like but now love a lot lol. And it's the simplest stuff like I used to think I didn't like friends to lovers when I love that now. I'm pretty partial to rommates stuff too and exes to lovers. But I've come to find that as much as I like enemies to lovers or even rivals to lovers, that one is the easiest to get wrong imo because a lot of the time it's not very believable, the same goes for a lot of forbidden romances.

Really, I like most things like fantasy aus, arranged marriages, fake dating but something that really makes me annoyed is miscommunication tbh. Again, a lot of my dislike for it comes from the fact that most times, there aren't any believable reasons for why it occurs, it's just used as a plot device when the whole story and plot would crumble if the characters just had one normal conversation. I understand it when the characters have ulterior motives or personal reasons like trauma, personality traits etc. that prevent them from talking about something, but a lot of the time there really is no reason for it.

I think I've mentioned before that I'm not the biggest fan of angst? Like I wouldn't personally purposefully seek out things with heavy angst (although somehow this is only true for fanfic because the novels that i read are mostly quite sad). So in that way I guess you could say things like love triangles and unhappy endings or major character death aren't exactly my thing. But I've found that if I really like an author's work I am willing to read that kind of thing and I do enjoy it (through tears)! Maybe I'm just not brave enough to pick it up just for the sake of the angst and sadness.

Okay you only asked for one of each and I gave you a ramble like always lol. I'm sure I missed a lot too, there's many smaller ones that I enjoy a lot but can't think of right now, but I think this is long enough anyway lmao.

Fun Facts:

Lazlo is in every class with Ollie and “Respects her hustle.” He’s never bought test answers from her, but understands the art of thievery for the greater good (haha). Plus, Lazlo is on the boy’s basketball team, and he goes to all the girl’s games with his teammates to show quiet support for them! Rin is in yearbook club, and she also goes to all the girl’s basketball games, but she doesn’t have an athletic bone in her body. It’s really because she loves to joke with Ollie that “the camera loves her” just to make excuses to take pictures of her (she’s a shameless flirt!!!). Oh - and her locker is next to Ollie’s!!!

People usually assume Rin is the star student, but she’s actually an average student who is only interested in the classes that pertain to what she wants to do in life, whereas Lazlo is the one in all AP classes and pulling straight-A report cards.

Rin wants to be a journalist when she grows up, and she loves photography. Her passion for the truth (and her general nosiness, lol) can sometimes get her in trouble at school or put her in awkward situations. But on the upside, she pretty much knows everything about everyone, and she isn’t afraid to fight authority to address injustice head on. 

Lazlo, on the other hand, wants to get an economics degree so he can eventually become a charity organizer (he’s got a big, giving heart but he doesn’t make a big deal about it).

Rin is a high energy, loud, delightful presence by default- but there is an underlying somberness that she deals with. She can have pretty harsh mood swings, feeling sad out of nowhere, and she feels guilty whenever it happens around the people she cares about (she has always taken on the role of the “strong one” so as not to worry others, whereas Lazlo has always been more openly sensitive).

You can’t see in the photos, but Lazlo has braces! Rin opted to forego braces because she says her gap gives her “character.”

Even though Lazlo and Rin are into different music and hobbies, they are truly best friends. 

Rin is younger by 11 minutes, and Lazlo loves to prat on about that. But Rin acts more like the older sibling, she’s always been the one calling the shots.

just to set you in on some background! being a virgin had so much more meaning back during the times when he was human. the real, historical vlad drăculea literally used to demand that women who lost theirs before marriage suffer impalement, so it's pretty precise how significant one's virginity was to him! 😭 bram stoker of course based his dracula novel on some of the history of vlad iii, so this is probably why the whole 'vampires loving virgins' became a thing. hirano based his version of dracula on both the real vlad and the novel, so this also explains why maintaining your virginity in the hellsing universe is important, and why deflowered humans turn into ghouls. it's a very clever reference imo!

not to mention, it's all just a bunch of religious nature—like where the bible says that you can only participate in sex after marriage, and ancient christianity put virgins on such high pedestals because it was viewed as being pure. of course, vampires are seen as demonic beasts, so that is also where their obsession with virgins stem from—they want to taint their innocence; your typical demon vs. god / good vs. evil trope. but you'll find that alucard is quite far from demonic or evil despite the things he's done. you have to look deep, but there is a layer to him that doesn't make him so much the monster that he thinks he is. he cries, has nightmares, cares for people even if only a few and harbors regrets. monsters don't have, feel or do any of those things.

he'd want his partner's first time to be extremely beautiful and eventful. keep in mind that he was sexually assaulted once; he wouldn't wish what he went through on anyone, so he'd want them to also enjoy their first time because he himself did not get the chance to. if they want him to be gentle, he will. if they request he roughen it up, you bet he will. it's their virginity. he's not going to put himself first during a moment in one's life where he was taught had value. he adores them and wants to show them just how much he does. i have always viewed him as an 'actions speak louder than words' kind of man. perhaps it is rare that he'll say "i love you" but he will damn sure show it.

Housedemon Headcanons (Obey Me! Shall We Date?: Brothers Part 1)

Content Warnings: Crackish?, but the rest is fluff, Potential out of chara stuff, and pre-established relationship(Since this is a play on the phrase housewife and or malewife), some mature content

Lucifer:

How? How did you manage to get him to leave the House of Lamentation AND Diavolo so he could live with you in the human world? And a better question is, how did you convince him that the Devildom won't burn down in his absence, be it by his brothers or even the demon prince himself?

The best case scenario I can imagine is that the two of you go back and forth between the two realms. The two of you stay in your home in the human world for at most a month every now and then, and spend the rest of the time in the Devildom. But while you're in your cozy little home with just the two of you, you do your best to make sure he does as little work as possible. That means you end up being the one to pay the bills while Luci takes care of the house.

He was originally against the idea of staying home, he had even started looking for jobs in the area. But, he does love you, and if you really want him to be a "housedemon", he'll eventually give in. ("Mc, it's fine. I can pick up a decent paying office job around here at this nearby company." "Luci, honey. I love you, but what company is going to hire someone named Lucifer? Did you already forget that you were too stubborn to change the name on our marriage certificate to a fake one?")

But to be honest, he enjoys having the time away from paperwork and dealing with his brothers. Lucifer is a lot more relaxed than usual, especially when you return home.

Your house is pretty much clean all the time, since Luci usually cleans up messes long before they get out of control. Since he's used to having a routine most of the time, he likes to keep a similar one in the Human World.

He usually has all his daily housework done by the time you get home. Typically, you can find him in his study or in the living room listening to something on his record player and reading a novel. On the rare occasion you catch him watching something on TV, but he's quick to shut it off when he hears you come in.

The way his eyes soften and he gives you a gentle smile when you come in the door? C'est magnifique. It's the same smile you usually see when you bring him coffee and urge him away from his paperwork back in the Devildom, but it lacks that sense of fatigue he usually has.

If you're home before he starts on dinner, he's there waiting for you. If you do come home around the time he's still cooking it, it is the perfect opportunity to sneak up behind him and give him a hug. Devildom dishes are much different than human dishes, and many human ingredients are easily ruined in a short span of time, so he's usually pouring most of his attention into that. You can surprise him if you're quiet enough, but most of the time he'll let you do it anyway. Should you happen to be taller than him, press a soft kiss against the top of his head for some added softness to the chuckle he lets out when he feels your arms around his waist. Don't try and do this back home in the Devildom though, he'll likely think one of his brothers is messing with him and you'll get a wing to the face.

Side-note: Somehow a few issues from the Devildom trickle between the cracks and Lucifer has to return for a moment. Usually it's about minor issues that he can run there and back in less than a day to take care of, but when it happens at some of your "private" moments Luci's in a fairly pissy mood for a hot minute. You cannot count the number of calls for help you got from the brothers on your D.D.D. when they had called at the climax of the two of you's downtime to tell Luci that somehow one of them lit Hell's Kitchen on fire.

Mammon:

Mammon isn't fully against the idea, but he may need some encouraging. He just wants to make sure he keeps his Greed in check for you and you don't end up hurt or broke from it. If you snuck a peek at some of the books he's been reading lately, you can tell he's trying his best. The covers range from "How to Deal with a Gambling Addiction", to "The Best Ways to Keep a House Neat and Tidy: For Demons". Don't point it out to him too soon though, or he'll go bright red and deny everything. Mams is a lot tamer with his whole tsundere thing now that he put a ring on your finger, but it still slips in every now and then.

When he moves in with you in the Human World, like his older brother, he immediately offers to get a job to pay some bills. Except, unlike Luci, he wasn't as stubborn to refuse putting a pseudonym on the marriage certificate. (Your Devildom one has his name on it anyway.) But, Mammon is very weak for his beloved human, some pleading and puppy eyes and he's putty in your hands.

There's a little mess around the house sometimes, but it never lasts too long. He's usually pretty good at keeping the house clean, aside from a stray dirty towel or a few dishes left out in the sink. If his brothers are coming over, he deep cleans the house. They likely don't pick on him as much since he's not in the Devildom as often as usual(and he's genuinely improved from your presence in his life). His brothers do nearly have a heart attack when they come in to the intense smell of lemon and fresh linens, not to mention Mammon in an apron tending to some indoor plants.

Mammon seems like the type who'd never think they'd like gardening, but actually loves it when they get into it. There is a ton of fresh veggies in his garden that he usually uses to cook with, but he grows a separate garden purely for corn. Why? To feed his adoring crows of course! He pretty much has a fan club of entirely crows that land in the backyard on a set schedule. They don't leave much of a mess behind though, but Mammon probably asks them not to. He likely also grows some flowers as well, but most of them are for you. Ones that remind him of you, ones that you say you like, et cetera et cetera.

You don't need to adopt a dog to have a Golden Retriever come barreling down the stairs to give you a hug and cover you in kisses when you come home. No matter what time it is, if he's not cooking or asleep, he's booking it to greet you at the door. Mammon will get all blushy if you playfully tease him about it, probably ends up just burying his face in your neck and muttering about it.

His cooking is fairly decent, but he did burn a few things when he was getting the hang of it. He does like indulging in some fast food or some spicy ramen when he just doesn't have the energy to cook, usually after a visit from his brothers. The two of you will just sit on the couch and watch something you both enjoy while sharing a blanket and having dinner.(Bonus points if its a cheesy Rom-Com)

Side-note: While he may not act like it or be given respect of the title most of the time, he IS the Avatar of Greed and one of the strongest demons in the Devildom. So, he'll likely be called back every now and then. If you're not working that day, he'll take you with him and the two of you just spend the rest of the night out on the town in the Devildom. Perhaps he may indulge a little in gambling with your supervision, as a treat. If you are working and can't get out of it, he'll bring you back cute little souvenirs. You might find an extra large extra cursed Zombie Iguana plush laying on your couch when he gets back.

Leviathan:

"Lol okay" ..."Wait, seriously?"

Levi is still trying to wrap his head around the fact that you two are married in the first place, but now you want to have him live with you in the Human World with just the two of you? He's gonna need a moment hang on. Okay, okay he's good now. But seriously, he'd likely be one of the easiest to get out of the Devildom. He will need a bit to make sure he packs up a good chunk of his stuff and Henry 2.0 to bring to the house and the rest will remain at home with the strongest protection spells he can manage on his room. Lotan probably keeps guard in there as well.

He is a little apprehensive at the idea of not helping out paying for things since he's taken up Part-time jobs for extra Grimm before, but he eases into it with some reassurance. Plus, when you call him your cute little housedemon he feels like he is going to melt into the floor.

He does his best to keep things neat and tidy, but sometimes he gets too enraptured in a different task that he forgets about the other he was about to do. The two of you make it a sort of bonding activity to do some of the leftover housework together on your off days. He doesn't mind when his brothers drop by, but he does ask them to wipe their shoes/take off their shoes when they come in the door. The brothers at first assumed that the cleanliness was from you and that wherever he games at is a mess, but when they can't find much more that some trash that hasn't been taken out yet and a little dust, they're definitely surprised. The main thing that doesn't surprise them is seeing Levi in an oversized Ruri-chan shirt while cleaning.

Hobbies wise, streaming is something probably obvious that he does. He doesn't do it for any intention of money though, he just likes interacting with other people who play the same games or share the same interests as him. You're a mod in his chat, and he you can hear how happy he is when you pop in to say hi during your lunch break. If he gains enough confidence, he'll ask you if he can commission someone for a Vtuber avatar. Other than streaming, he does enjoy sewing an assortment of items. Mostly cosplay stuff, but he's sewn you and him matching plush toys, matching Halloween costumes, and any tears or rips in your clothes.

Depending on how late in the day it is, he may be asleep on the couch waiting for you with one of your favorite two player games up on the TV. You almost don't want to wake him up, but that sleepy smile he gives you when you do is too tempting to let him just lay there. There are actually rare days in which you return home earlier than him, which are when he needs to deal with things in the Devildom as Grand Admiral. Those nights, you cook up his favorite meal and wait for him to come home. Levi hasn't even managed to shrug his coat off or remove his hat at the door before he gets his welcome home kiss. Depending on the kind of day he's had, he might need a massage.

His cooking is alright, but he excels in baking. There's almost not a single day that there isn't a beautiful cake in the fridge that's themed after a character. One cannot describe the amount of joy in the room when it's time for the two of you to have dessert and you take turns feeding bites to each other. He's glad his brothers aren't around, so he doesn't have to hear the sounds of fake gagging.

Side-note: Levi actually begins to gain some confidence from your encouragement and just being around you all the time. He's still not too fond of social situations, but he's far more comfortable when he's holding your hand. So, the two of you do go to a handful of conventions together in matching cosplays.

Satan:

Honestly, Satan is all up for it. If he wasn't concerned for how his brothers would react, he'd pack up that night. He's more than happy to follow you to the ends of the Earth and back, considering just how much trust there is between the two of you to even marry in the first place.

"You want me to just take care of the house and then do whatever else I want?" "Yeah, basically." "So I can just read for as long as I want?" "Pretty much."

Jokes aside, he doesn't actually spend all of his time reading. A good chunk of it yes, but there's still plenty of time leftover to do other things since he doesn't have RAD to worry about.

The two of you adopt a cat not too long after he moves in. Don't worry if you're allergic, he's researched enough about cats to know which ones won't cause your allergies to flare up.

He's good at cleaning, but not at organizing. Sure, he can stack up his books in nice and neat piles, but for the love of- just put them back on the damn shelves. Satan can't say he's not surprised when he sees a few books on organization show up miraculously in his piles. He'll try his best for you, but his disorganization is a tough habit to break(probably started out of teenage rebellion lol).

Lucifer thinks you've replaced him with an identical copy when the brothers come to visit and the books are put up all neat and tidy, the laundry is folded and put away nicely, and the Avatar of Wrath is in the middle of cooking dinner in a vaguely cat-shaped pan.

Speaking of his brothers visiting, do ensure he knows long ahead of time so he can make sure his magical barriers on a certain closet is as strong as possible. He does not want to listen to centuries of teasing about all of his cat-themed clothing items. Not that he doesn't like them, he loves wearing them more than his regular clothes which is why you keep buying them for him. He also doesn't want them walking in when he's got his hair tied back and a "Kiss the Kitten" apron on.

Satan usually spends the times that he's done cleaning and he doesn't feel like reading watching a lot of Human World dramas with your shared cat on his lap. If he's really into a specific one, he'll sometimes leave it on while he's cleaning with the subtitles on and the TV loud enough for him to hear it over the vacuum cleaner. The neighbors may hate him, but he does not really care since he's doing it within the hours you're allowed to be loud anyway. Other than watching dramas or reading, I could see him picking up a little bit of fitness on the side. Something simple and stress relieving. Though you do have a punching bag downstairs if he's feeling particularly stressed.

You can pretty much expect Satan to be waiting up for you on the couch when you get home or in the kitchen. He'll smile and hold you close, but if he's feeling playful that day he may do a mixture of whining and teasing at you. Some nights you do get home very late and find him absolutely wiped out on the couch. If you're strong enough, he'd be more than happy to have you carry him to bed. If you aren't though, he's plenty happy waking up to you snuggling into his arms on the couch.

He doesn't head to the Devildom much, but it's usually with you if you're available. He does need to keep his connection network up and as an Avatar he does have some work to do. If you aren't there with him, he sends you a lot of messages throughout the day of just whatever he's thinking about or saw.

Side-note: He won't admit it in front of his brothers, especially not Levi, but he has been influenced by the third born a good bit. Every now and then Satan indulges in some story-rich video games or anime. He almost got caught in the middle of playing a game with anime scenes in it, but settled for throwing his D.D.D. as hard and far across the room as possible instead of getting caught. He'll only indulge in front of you.

this one really hit close to home for me in many ways and i almost couldn't get through it because of how much it hurt but at the same time it felt really cathartic. michelle zauner is a talented writer... and also apparently a really talented musician??

taylor jenkins reid has quickly become one of my favorite writers of all time (if you haven’t read the seven husbands of evelyn hugo or daisy jones & the six what the fuck are you doing!!) but i haven’t read any of her pre-evelyn hugo books so i set out to change that with one of her second(?) novel which seemed the most up my alley: marital angst (lmao). this follows a couple whose marriage is falling apart – they decide to spend a year apart to see if they still want to stay together by the end of it. i really enjoyed it!! not my favorite tjr read but definitely still so good <3

- know my name by chanel miller / nonfiction; memoir (tw: rape/sexual assault, medical trauma, mentions of suicide, mentions of school shootings)

"i am a victim, i have no qualms with this word, only with the idea that it is all that i am." chanel miller wrote this memoir to reclaim her identity and tell her story in her own words, and she did exactly that. this was powerful and heartbreaking and so beautifully written. i'll be thinking about it for a long, long time.

- project hail mary by andy weir / adult; science fiction (tw: mentions of suicide)

also if you haven't read the martian, do that too!! what can i even say about this book??? it's science fiction and space and aliens and so so so good!!! i think some people are intimidated to read andy weir books because of how much science is involved and while there is indeed a lot of that (which is probably exactly why i adore them so much) i definitely think it is accessible to readers who don't have that extra knowledge, and definitely will not affect the enjoyability of the story itself!!

- girl, woman, other by bernardine evaristo / adult; literary fiction (tw: rape, domestic abuse, racism, homophobia, transphobia, miscarriage)

i've been meaning to read this for ages but ahh it's amazing!! this novel tells the stories of twelve predominantly Black women in the UK with a vast range of experiences and lives. usually books that follow this many characters fall flat for me, but evaristo portayed these vastly different narratives effortlessly imo <3

- how do you live? by genzaburo yoshino / middle-grade; coming of age

this is supposedly going to be the last studio ghibli film ever which is extremely sad </3 but this book was so lovely and heartwarming and definitely made me stop and contemplate how we're all connected – the only thing i cannot believe is that copper is fifteen years old (he is eleven or twelve at most!)

- she who became the sun by shelley parker-chan / adult; historical fantasy (tw: violence, gender dysphoria, misogyny, some internalized homophobia)

this is a "reimagining of the rise of the founding emperor of the Ming Dynasty" and is also pitched as "mulan meets the song of achilles" and... actually lives up to that?? a bit dense and slow at times but overall incredible!

- the kingdoms by natasha pulley / adult; historical fantasy (tw: rape, murder, general violence associated with war)

finished this last night and it was SO GOOD!!! it takes place in the early twentieth century but in an alternate timeline in which france won the battle of trafalgar in 1805 and conquered britain which is now a french colony and involves time travel, amnesia, and a dual timeline – i think this is a book you should go into not knowing much even if the beginning feels a bit disorienting or choppy (as it did for me). this book has a way of digging into you and once it catches hold, you're hooked!!

— Oh wow, a very cheerful girl, and a somewhat mature-looking guy...both of them doesn't seem the type to create chaos in the dorm , you felt a slight of relief

— The moment the three of you arrived at your dorm, kaede immediately ask both you and hajime to introduce yourselves after her, and of course, she ended her introduction with a 'i hope we can all get along well!'

— On the other side, for hajime, he's just going along with kaede's suggestion and gives the most average reaction ever

— The dorm was quite lively with kaede in it, she'd always try her best to try to get along with you and also hajime,

— Hajime would be the one interacting with you and kaede after he felt more comfortable in the dorm, and it was rather quick cause of kaede's lively act everyday

— He would be like: "hey,brought us some doughnuts, remember to leave one for me"

— It was not long before the three of you started to talk more often and so be a bit more close with each other

There would be quite a lot fun and wholesome moments with kaede in there

When kaede found out that you like to song, she would be asking you if you wanted to sing while she plays the piano,you weren't that sure if you would like to at first, but soon you enjoy the feeling after one rehearsal with kaede

Since you know, she's the supportive type, it felt kinda nice hearing her complimenting you

Hajime would be the one audience both of you have and he's the only audience both of you need

Hajime is an average gamer like everybody else, so if it's about games, you and Hajime will have a lot in common

And of course, both of you would teach kaede about games and will end up playing them together

While playing visual novel games like yttd and pocket mirror, all of you would think hardly together and solve the riddles inside

While playing open world games like genshin impact, the three of you would defeat bosses together and since the three of you are at the average level, that is not too pro and not too noob, it's always very fun and glorious after winning a battle

Studying with kaede and Hajime is also really fun ,I can see that the three of you would really take reading very seriously but still if it's about the subject the three of you hated, then it's really hard to stay focus

"ugh- maths... Hajime you got any answer for that question?"

"I will give it to you but in exchange, I need your science answer for this question"

While it's the time for events in the year, it would be really fun since kaede is a festival type of person and she would take festivals like Chinese New year, Christmas,even birthdays very seriously

So when it comes to events and stuff , your dorm could be really lively

Where we have the time when Halloween arrived and kaede decided to go trick or treating around the dorm building and Hajime immediately rejected that idea since he called that, too embarrassing

But at the end Hajime just couldn't resist kaede's determination

Hajime wore a skeleton costume while kaede wore a witch costume, and you are going for a fairy costume

I hope these are alright, it was a little hard to think of one for Javier because i feel like I don't know his character very well, but i feel like he’s one of those people that can just pick up any instrument and learn it with a few pointers and some practice. my sister is the same way lmao. Tilly was inspired by the idea of her having this beautiful plant covered bedroom which I thought suited her. Sean was the easiest because he already has a hobby, and honestly he doesn't seem like the hobby type of guy so at least I had a jumping off point.

Tilly:

When they got to the house, the study and most of the rooms all had bookcases filled with every kind of book from encyclopedias to romance novels to medical texts, anything you could think of. So when they all got there, those of the gang who could read and enjoy doing so were in absolute heaven. Any free time was immediately spent on one of the plush armchairs cracking open a dusty book. Tilly was certainly part of this, and in her reading, she gained a huge interest in plant husbandry.

She insists it’s a hobby because her favorite focus is on rare plants that often have no practical use, but she ends up with extensive knowledge of most herbs and plants. She is a big help in the herb garden, especially when they were figuring out which herbs they could grow where and what they could be used for. Her pride and joy however are the plants she grows in her room. All the upstairs bedrooms have large windows, and over time her bedroom has become full of plants. 

Her room is covered in live plants, rare plants that the others found and brought back, rare plants that she went hunting for, ivy and flowers, everything. She has hundreds of pressed and dried flowers in books and decorating her walls, and she is even learning to make teas, inks, paints and makeup with them. (homemade cosmetic recipes used to be placed in women’s magazines in the 1800s as cosmetics were a staple but not everyone could afford to buy them.)

Sean:

As we know, the man enjoys whittling. Before the ranch, he didn’t take it far beyond some sharp sticks, a few arrowheads and some crude figures, but at the ranch he found himself encouraged to take up this hobby to its fullest. It wasn’t his idea really, Lenny encouraged him. For all his fumbling, he really wasn’t bad with that knife of his and Lenny found a couple of books on whittling. It became both an encouraging way to teach Sean to read and a way to learn more about the trade.

Over time he was following the books himself and carving little animal figures and toy soldiers. He got really good at it, and for his birthday, Hosea and Lenny got him a real wood carving kit with curved knives and instructions on how to make a chess set. Hosea said he promised to teach them all how to play chess if Sean could carve them a whole set, and with that encouragement he got to work. Overall the man isn’t the ‘sit down for extended periods of time’ type guy, but it’s great as a more passive hobby when he feels like resting.

It’s especially great for instances where he has to chill out. For example, he actually managed to dislocate his ankle on the way down the stairs and was down for 6 weeks. When staying still got too hard and Grimshaw wouldn’t let him put weight on the foot, the whittling helped. It gave him something to focus on that wasn’t the feeling of being useless or the energy thrumming through all his muscles.

Javier:

At the ranch, there is a beautiful grand piano in one of the sitting rooms. Benefits of inheriting a rich family estate and all that. For a while, nobody really touched it because nobody knows how to use it. Javier had always been musically inclined, he can hold a tune and play the guitar effortlessly. When he was a teenager he picked it up mostly on his own, he just had a knack for music. The piano, however, can be a daunting instrument. It was a while before he touched it. In fact, it wasn’t until an early morning when half the house was outside and the other half was passed out drunk before he did. 

The only reason he wasn’t out working himself was that he was sick with some sort of stomach bug and technically wasn’t supposed to even be out of his bedroom. He didn’t really play anything that first day. He tested the keys, played them all just to know what sound they made. Before he had really gotten to know the instrument, Ms. Grimshaw burst into the room and he was busted for breaking his quarantine. 

It was a woman at the local bar that taught him how to play it a bit more. She was passing through town for a few days with a group of people and playing music each night for a little extra cash. He found himself flirting with her as she took breaks from playing for the bar, and they enjoyed the fleeting company. She showed him a few basics and he took to it like a fish to water. Like anything, it took time and practice but it was a rapid increase in skill, and eventually, he was playing for them all in the sitting room just like he does with his guitar.

this is going to be my thing from now on. i'll compile a list of all the books i read in a month and share my thoughts on each one every end of the month.

just so you know, i'm a little forgetful, and i have a tendency to forget names, plots, and other details. i'm hoping that writing these will aid my memory in recalling how i felt about each novel.

101 essays that will change the way you think (wiest, brianna)

self-help book

this book got off to a good start! some of the essays written (or should i say a collection of articles originally published on the thoughtcatalog website) made me think and consider my outlook on life, love, and so on.

the title overstates the case though. when i think of an essay, i picture something more argumentative and philosophical. not to mention that the majority of the ideas in this book are redundant. it made it difficult to get through. nonetheless, i was able to get past it because there were so many fantastic concepts and topics discussed.

overall, it's an interesting & worthwhile read for those who enjoy thinking outside the box.i lost count of how many times this book gave me aha moments. i swear, most of the entries soothed my mind and provided a great pick-me-up when life seemed to be frustrating.

the midnight library (haig, matt)

science fiction, fantasy fiction, psychological fiction

regrets, self-remorse, what ifs, family approval, drugs, dreams, love, passion, hatred, death, afterlife, multiverses, quantum physics, and a plethora of possibilities packed into a 304-page book.

i'll be honest: this book is already on my list of favorites. i'm simply blown away by how well-crafted and diverse the entire story unfolded.

a sci-fi novel with a dash of fantasy and a smidgeon of philosophy. if that's your thing, you should give this book a shot.

the first few pages of the book gave me an impression and led me to surmise it was going to be a cheesy ass chick lit novel that i'd only read and find enjoyable in high school. i was completely off base. it proved to be very mature, full of lessons, but delivered in a fun and entertaining manner— exactly my cup of tea.

it reminded me of a disney pixar film called soul, in which the afterlife is depicted in vivid detail. they differ on so many levels, but they both imagine life after death for people who are unsure of their path, purpose, and passion.

every chapter served a significant concept, so this book is well-deserved of a 5-star rating!

norwegian wood (murakami, haruki)

as i read the book and neared the end, all i could think about was how this book became one of murakami's most popular and influential works.

murakami offers a sprawling glimpse into the lives of a group of severely damaged youths grappling with the realities of what emptiness entails. take what you will from it.

i know a lot of people like it, which is fine. but please keep in mind that this book hit me square in the gut. it alternated between making me angry, sad, annoyed, and disgusted almost constantly. there isn't much else.

this book should come with a warning: "this is not a good place to start if you're new to murakami's works. this is not a representative of murakami's brilliance."

fist and foremost, the characters in this book are all repulsive.

toru watanabe was a fuckboy and a softboy rolled into one. what could possibly be worse than that? he'd have as many casual sexual partners as he could while also buttering a girl up by appealing to her emotions and displaying a "sensitive" and "vulnerable" side.

this book was made even more depressing by the fact that each female character was needy, weak, dysfunctional, and dependent. since they're all the same, i'm not going to go over each of these female characters one by one. you already get the idea.

reiko ishida, imo, was one of the best rendered sections of the novel. most likely because she had a better grasp on her emotions and goals than the still seeking youths... until, *spoiler alert* she wanted to do it with toru as well. a big disappointment.

to summarize, this book is primarily concerned with two topics: sex and death.

hidden meanings are everywhere, but when you get to the core, that's all that remains.

the four agreements: a practical guide to personal freedom (ruiz, miguel)

self-help book

first agreement ⏤ be impeccable with your word

this essentially means that you should not spew gossip or use words to harm others. because words have tremendous power and can cause significant harm. you are not only negatively affecting others with your hateful and thoughtless words, but you are also hurting yourself. this is something with which i generally agree. how i see it, when people are unhappy with themselves, they turn to others to make themselves feel better. as a result, they gossip about others in order to divert attention away from themselves.

second agreement ⏤don't take anything personally

alright. sure. don't let what others say about you bother you. it has everything to do with them and nothing to do with you. well, i don't entirely agree, but i think it's a fantastic idea in general. however, achieving this goal will be extremely difficult. i believe it would take a lot of practice to reach this level of zen. plus, i honestly believe that other people's opinions still matter because they keep you in check. the best advice is to not be swayed by these opinions, but to consider why they were expressed in the first place. see what you can do to improve yourself from there. sure, it can be difficult to deal with; after all, no one likes being told they're wrong or whatnot. but it's not all bad news because you can sometimes use criticism and judgment to give you a competitive edge. i mean- don't you think hearing someone else's point of view is also an opportunity to learn and progress? ruiz should have stressed that it's not just about "not taking it personally because you know you're not that person," but also about not retaliating with an extreme knee-jerk reaction even if you believe you're being unfairly criticized.

third agreement ⏤ don't make assumptions

this is a real eye-opener for me. i've noticed that whenever i become enraged by someone's words, it's usually due to my tendency to assume. personally, i can't help but make assumptions. i don't know what other people's motivations are, and i can't help but draw conclusions based on the information i have. even if the other person had no intention of causing me harm, it's too late. the thought has become ingrained in my mind, and i never ask for clarification out of pride or fear of appearing overly sensitive.

fourth agreement ⏤ always do your best

this section did not seem particularly useful to me. i mean, aren't we all reminded of this all the time? this section is filled with sloppy writing, in my opinion. as if he badly wanted to finish the book and impulsively thought: "okay, fourth agreement: always do your best. that should suffice. lmao"

overall opinion: the third agreement was my favorite, but the rest were a no-go. don't get me wrong, i appreciated his ideas, but i've heard them all a hundred times before. basically, the book's sole takeaway is that we are all suffering in some way in our daily lives, and we are all dealing with different issues. regardless, we all need to be kinder and gentler to ourselves and others.

the song of achilles (miller, madeline)

i'll keep it short and sweet:

i really wouldn't have had this book any other way. miller's writing is breathtaking, so rich and full of lovely detail. it's incredibly a unique concept to me that authors are rewriting such ancient history and stories to make them lgbt+!

some suggest it's tedious, but i disagree. it isn't slow; rather, it is just right.

'cause at the end of the day, it's not about war, tragedy, or heroes - it's a slow-burning, organic love tale between two young men and their inevitable connection.

it's sad, tender, and painful, but in the best way possible.

circe (miller, madeline)

"greek mythology, but with a feminist twist"?! sign me the hell up! this piqued my interest... only to leave me feeling completely let down. seriously now. circe was described as a "badass empowered woman," which was the single most compelling selling point for me, and thus the most wrenching disappointment, i must say.

sure, it demonstrated the value of feminine power, but it also did represent how this power can be a force of good or evil.

not to mention the fact that circe fucked a married man or two in this book- i mean- how is that an ~empowered woman~?

let's be clear right off the bat: madeline miller's follow-up to the song of achilles is epic in scope but not necessarily in execution. to me, this read more like a tedious island tale. regardless of how many five-star reviews this book has received... i just don't think it's well-deserved. don't get me wrong here. miller is a fantastic author with a lush writing! istg- i'm blown away by how beautifully she wrote and carefully chose her words. even the most mundane phrases were written poetically. after-all, it’s greek mythology. but how did she manage to make circe seem so... bland?

it’s been a lot longer than i intended, but a bunch of stuff came up and i both didn’t have time and didn’t feel like writing. this also wasn’t what i initially planned on posting, but life works weirdly and here we are. that being said, i wrote this in a way that is different to how i typically write so i apologise if it sounds/feels weird or awkward. regardless, i hope u enjoy! (also i didn’t realise it was all lower case so please ignore the inconsistency lmao)

mingi had been waiting for eons to score a date with y/n. way too long. all of his friends (mainly wooyoung), teased him constantly about her, but he had never gathered the courage to do anything about it.

they'd been friends for a long while, even hanging out a few times together at the cinema, or just going out for lunch before mingi realised he had an absolutely huge crush on her.

recently he'd been avoiding her like the plague, using volleyball practice, or band rehearsal with the boys as an excuse not to hang out with her. 

that was, until one sunny saturday afternoon, when she called him out of the blue. he took a few moments to collect himself, staring at the ringing phone in his hand like it was a ticking bomb seconds away from a devastating explosion.

"hey dingus!" y/n called down the phone once he had collected himself enough to answer. "what are you doing?" she asked.

"nothing. why?" 

"i'm bored." she declared. "wanna come over?"

"s-sure!" mingi agreed straight away.

"sweet. see you soon then!" y/n hung up, and mingi was convinced he might pass out.

he'd never been to her house before. maybe she really did like him back? oh god, he was starting to internally panic now; how was he supposed to act? he didn't want to be a creep but he didn't want to be painfully awkward either. oh god. oh god oh god oh god.

"get it together, mingi." he scowled at himself in the mirror, shaking his faded red hair side to side. he couldn’t make a fool of himself in front of her; he absolutely would not allow it. 

this could be his chance, to finally muster enough balls to ask y/n out before it was too late. yes, he'd decided; today would be the day.

half an hour later, an exceptionally nervous song mingi knocked on the door of his highschool crush. he reached up and brushed a shaking hand through his hair, wondering whether his legs were numb from fear or the chilling bite of the surprisingly cold weather. 

a few moments passed, then the door swung open to reveal y/n. she was dressed in her usual style, comfy, stylish, beautiful, very y/n. in truth, she could be wearing a trashbag and mingi would still say she looked gorgeous.

she gave him a wide, toothy grin and stepped aside to let him in.

"welcome to mi casa!" she motioned to the hallway dramatically, one arm sweeping out in front of her and almost bashing her elbow into the kitchen doorframe.

"i wanna watch a movie!" she said, once she had recovered from the near injury. "i've already got the snacks ready, so let's go!"

she began bounding up the stairs, mingi following her before realising where they were headed and freezing abruptly in his tracks.

"we're going upstairs?" he breathed, anxiety flooding him from head to foot.

just what exactly was she expecting from him?

"yeah?" she shrugged. "is that a problem?"

"no!" he replied, perhaps a little too quickly. "no, that's not a problem at all."

he was scared.

bordering on terrified.

y/n's bedroom was dark; having pulled the curtains before mingi's arrival to avoid the sun glaring onto the television.

as the minutes went on, mingi became less and less sure just what she was planning this afternoon.

she paced over to the tv set, opening a dvd case and slotting a disc into the player.

"it's a 1980s horror film," she explained. "i've been wanting to watch it for ages, but i didn't want to watch it alone... you don't mind, do you?"

mingi shook his head quickly. he did in fact mind, not being the biggest fan of the horror genre, but he'd made it this far, and backing out now was definitely not an option. plus, if wooyoung caught wind of mingi chickening out, he would never hear the end of it.

"here," she motioned to her bed; a double, with lilac sheets and an appropriate amount of cushions bundled up by her pillows. "take a seat."

unsure of whether he should, but not wanting to be rude, mingi crawled across her bed, sitting down amidst the cushions and crossing his legs like an obedient, yet timid child. he watched y/n grab her desk chair, dragging it across the room and placing it beside the bed, distanced but still close enough to mingi to completely throw him off his guard.

"don't you want the be-"

"nonsense!" she cut him off before he could even get the words out. "you're my guest, so you get the bed."

mingi was bewildered. never in his life had he expected to be in this situation. it appeared that y/n had absolutely zero intentions of doing anything romantic. which, don't get him wrong, was totally fine, but regardless he was still confused.

all the cheesy high school romance movies he’d watched, and all the young adult fiction novels he had read hinted that when you were invited to your crush’s house, alone, it usually indicated they wanted something romantic. or something more. absolutely nothing had prepared him for, or even suggested that the current circumstances would ever occur in a million years. mingi felt rather cheated, to be honest.

was she making him wait on purpose? deliberately staying away from him in the hopes that he'd just cave in and sweep her off her feet? y/n didn't seem like that kind of girl, but mingi had been wrong about a lot of things when it came to y/n. 

the movie began to play, and they sat surrounded by darkness, mingi decided he would simply go with the flow. he was a nervous wreck, but he wasn't a pervert; he wouldn't do anything unless y/n initiated it. the last thing he wanted was to make her uncomfortable. 

despite reaching a solution, he couldn't get it out of his mind how close they were in the moment. glancing to his side, he could very much reach out and gently touch her hair. or softly caress her cheek. 

obviously, he wouldn't, because that would be weird. and that was a vibe he was trying to avoid today.

halfway through the movie, y/n jumped up, explaining she had to use the bathroom and scaring the shit out of mingi in the process.

he kept his gaze fixed on the movie playing in front of him, but his mind wandered to other places. he sighed deeply.

he didn't even know what to say to her.

she's always on his mind,

and yet,

he's too afraid to say anything. how long would this pathetic pining go on for? surely it would be better for him to take wooyoung's advice and just go for it? otherwise he'll be playing this game for god knows how long. 

that was it.

he simply couldn't help the way he was feeling; he needed to get it out, to tell her how he truly feels.

and maybe, just maybe, she'd feel the same way too.

y/n comes back, and mingi gears himself up for his confession. digging into the deepest corners of his mind to find the right words to use. deciding to abandon his previous resolution to let y/n initiate, he convinces himself to take charge and follow the lead of every heteronormative teen movie in existence, and sweep the girl off her feet.

until she ditches the chair, motioning for mingi to scooch over and then she lays down right beside him. 

the bed is fairly large, but then again mingi is no regular sized teenage boy, his lanky frame taking up a considerable portion of the bed.. as a result, his right side and her left are pressed flush against each other, and poor mingi thinks he's about to explode.

but still, he inhales deeply, surveying the situation.

the lights are off, 

the mood was right.

perfect.

mingi lets her settle for a short while, which is really him internally psyching himself up, before setting his masterplan into action.

he turns his head slowly to look at y/n, noticing how invested she is in the movie and he pouts a little.

he wants her attention.

she still doesn't notice, so he opts for placing his hand on her cheek as gently as he can and guides her gaze towards him.

her eyebrows furrow together in confusion, but she makes no effort to move away.

frozen anxiety that mingi misinterprets as a green light.

his eyes fall shut, and his upper body leans forward the tiniest amount. he's so close. so close to finally being able to show y/n how he feels. he's seconds away from having a weight lifted off his shoulders. he can't wait to shove it in wooyoung's face either, all the times the younger boy had called him a pussy had pissed mingi off to no end, but look at him now wooyoung, look at him now.

all he needed was for y/n to bridge the gap between them.

but instead, a small hand on mingi's shoulder pushes him back, and his eyes snap open abruptly, and he feels his stomach fall straight through his ass.

"y/n, i-"

the look on her face stops mingi dead in his tracks, because he can't read her expression.

is she mad? is she super pissed that he tried to kiss her? he'd understand if she was, it probably wasn't the best course of action but it was the best he could come up with. is she angry? is she hurt? disappointed? he searches her eyes, burning into his, for answers but comes up short. all he can do is try and guess how she's feeling, but realistically he's no expert, he's no mindreader, how is he suppo-

some of these will probably get into theory territory as well, because i’ve had the novels sitting in my mind for years now, and there are a few details i’d like to mention (beware of baccano light novel spoilers, just in case).

this could get a bit long, so you can read it below the cut:

i’ll write my headcanons/thoughts in no particular order. more people might have come to similar conclusions, but i don’t think i’ve seen any posts or had any discussions with anyone regarding these (at least in depth), so!

- i like to think that miria and isaac ran away from their then (seemingly) unhappy lives after they got to interact with each other for quite a while, and not spontaneously upon meeting for the first time.

there isn’t much evidence to back this up beyond some characters commenting that they “were probably runaways” or that “maybe they eloped”, so they might have escaped together on the spot, since we already know they can be very impulsive. however, i get this feeling that their bond took some time to develop, and i’d love to see some of their interactions as isaac dian —and— miria harvent before they ever became isaac & miria, if that makes sense.

i doubt they met too long before their string of robberies, though? this is such a weirdly specific and probably meaningless thing to pinpoint, but in 1935 miria asks isaac if he’s ever been to the circus, and he responds that he does remember animals, but he doesn’t remember if that was the circus or the zoo. this hardly means anything, but their circumstances overall don’t really make me think that they’ve known each other since they were too young.

- whatever optimism and general exhilaration regarding life isaac has is innate. on the other hand, miria has mostly acquired her own sense of hopefulness over time, with isaac’s help.

miria is a 100% confirmed literal ray of sunshine and this indisputable. it just hasn’t/doesn’t always come to her as effortlessly as it may seem. bloody to fair isaac and miria magic show color page.png

this is somewhat related to the next one (and also the last point i’ll mention at the end of this post):

- when isaac gets arrested and he and miria get separated in 1934, they’re both having an equally hard time dealing with this.

okay this one is like. obvious ksjksk. but i wanted to talk about how they deal with this situation, because at first glance it looks like miria got the shortest end of the stick here. and in a way, that might be true! i’ve already mentioned that miria herself has been shown thinking about how much isaac helped her to be happy, and narita has been deliberately vague regarding the nature of their silliness, on top of hinting at the possibility of their shenanigans being a kind of mechanism to escape the harsh realities of life from the rolling bootlegs (very first novel), if i recall correctly.

(btw:

i recall that somewhere in the 1935 arc, graham starts talking with the usual “let me tell you a sad, sad story” prelude. however, isaac and miria are upset by this, and they tell him that he shouldn’t tell sad stories, because if you do it, your happiness will run away. meanwhile, this part in cloudy to rainy living rent free in my head:

that being said, i couldn’t help but feel like isaac was having an equally bad time, even if he displayed it in a different and not so blatant way. while i was rereading the novels after i got to buy the official english release, i felt very strongly that something was definitely wrong about their separation, which, again, is obvious to us readers and to the characters who know isaac & miria. but it extends beyond that. there was this general feeling of knowing that whoever came across an unaccompanied isaac would magically feel like there was something missing. i don’t know how else to explain this. he’s still full of energy and optimism and he’s fueled by his desire to reunite with miria, but every time he’s shown hesitating or doesn’t reach a satisfying conclusion while thinking about a frivolous topic, it hits you like “oh... right” (firo didn’t help much on that last front, either, so miria and isaac must have had to discuss what exactly happens to fellas who don’t believe in fairies after their reunion... lol)

in short, he needs miria just as much as she needs him. this is something i’ve seen other people mention as well: isaac might be the “force” factor in their relationship, but that force won’t amount to much without miria’s “direction”, and viceversa. the lift each other up, and they keep each other grounded, too.

i’m also remembering isaac and sham’s conversation and just. there’s a self-esteem/confidence factor in there. Fun Game of Spot the Difference

and this is getting ridiculously long, so i’ll spare you from having to read my dumb thots about isaac’s (possibly real) fear of miria not liking him, as the narrator implies, which i subconsciously ended up linking to that one impossibly crack ending in the ds game, where you pick the option of him not knowing frankenstein’s monster’s real name, so miria leaves him after realizing how “cheap and uncool” he is LMAO

- isaac’s father might have been an academic of some sort, as well as a stern man who disapproved of his son’s flighty and childish tendencies.

???????? besides miria’s implied tragic backstory, the most we know about both of their pasts is that isaac comes from a wealthy family with whom he seems to have a bad relationship with, so even though i’ve tried to work out other details (his parents’ provenance for instance?) i can’t really elaborate on this. even if isaac’s knowledge on the topic is pretty scrambled (to put it nicely lol), he knows a lot about “the orient” as he puts it, and the “dian” surname is pretty unique so who knows!👀 i’ve only mentioned his father because isaac, too, has only mentioned his "old man” twice so far in the novels, if i’m not mistaken. in my opinion, it also speaks volumes how flustered isaac got when molsa apologized to him, because it was the first time someone older than him has done this. and this is pretty arbitrary, but if isaac started robbing and getting into trouble before he and miria even met and/or before he got kicked out/ran away from home, that whole deal about “being used to dealing with policemen” (in the unofficial translation i read back in the day it was something along the lines of “this isn’t my first time being interrogated by the police”) in 1934 would make sense, i guess, considering that miria didn’t realize what was going on at the moment even though she’s a fairly perceptive person.

anyways it’s too bad we don’t know that much about miria on this front, also!! i get the vague feeling that she might have also come from a wealthy family (probably not a good environment, though), since in 1935 it’s mentioned that the closest they’ve ever gotten to working/having a job was when they were digging for gold, apparently. that’s why i can’t really think of anything too specific regarding miria’s past and upbringing... i have a feeling that she might have felt alone, trapped and/or overwhelmed. let’s just hope that when she said her bruises would heal up fine with ice in 1935 it had nothing to do with this “i should have died” business :(((

- even though isaac and miria love their friends and would do anything for them, they aren’t particularly attached to anyone (or any place) besides each other.

this is more of an observation than a headcanon, but i find it really interesting: they would definitely do anything for their friends, and they do enjoy life very intensely, but that’s precisely why they don’t seem to be fixed in one singular spot? basically, i feel like they’re the personification of “home is where the heart is” taken to the extreme. they could go anywhere and do anything as long as they have each other, and they will never make any attempts to actively do things that make it easier to label their relationship, such as getting married, which is heavily implied by firo (i think) in 2002 bullet garden (i think!!). that’s also part of the reason why i’m sure they’d never find themselves commiting to things like taking care of a pet, or a child; it’s more like they instantly “adopt” everyone they run into, as if they’ve always been friends, even if they won’t meet again for months, years, or ever again. anyway, isaac and miria are extremely good and they are literally going to be happy together forever and ever! they don’t need to prove that.

that doesn’t mean they’re not sentimental, though! i like to think that they keep some meaningful objects that remind them of fond memories of their friends. and this is hardly canon because it shows up in the anime And in a background at that, but shoutout to the rocking toy horse in their california mine lol.

- miria knew about her own immortality (as well as isaac’s) before the 2000s.

THIS IS PROBABLY MY SPICIEST TAKE and i tried to back it up in the next point of this list. i still keep thinking i’m reading too much, into this but

i can’t stop thinking about the implications, folks

which brings us to:

- miria is smarter than isaac is and actually has a fairly good idea of when he’s making stuff up, but is happy to let him take the lead.

i won’t deny that isaac and miria dedicate a huge chunk of their day to doing moronic stuff, and they are pretty dumb, but i feel like people don’t give them enough credit for how perceptive they are. even though that’s true of the two of them, i feel like this mostly applies to miria.

among other things, we’ve learned that she knows ronny isn’t human and has supernatural powers (wow), which is why she comes to him for help after isaac’s arrest. she’s very good at paying attention to small details, such as the kind of programs ennis watches on tv, or chané’s feelings, when the two talk in 1934. miria also “really knows her way around japanese” and has been shown to --apparently?-- multiply large numbers in her head in 1935... while isaac was talking about how good of an idea it would be to use the martingale betting system. not to mention how isaac stated he “doesn’t know how to count money” earlier in this arc. my god ksdjgjks. i want to know what’s up with this, if anything.

Hello Clare! I've been listening to your podcasts & enjoying them recently, quite interesting to see different perspectives of things. Anyway, I hope you do see this ask! It is a question I want to pose to those of you who are long-standing fic readers. I grew up in libraries & when I was younger, I used to read like the world was going to end in an apocalypse the next day. Haven't read a proper novel in ages (but that's another story). Anyway, to all you seasoned fic readers, I honestly don't

+understand how you can read fics & separate your life & emotions from them. I start many fics & stop when Something happens that triggers a deluge of emotions within me. I've always had extremely intense emotions & with fics, I am driven to a painful level of depth & complexity in my emotions & I feel actual physical pain. The characters & what they're facing becomes that tangible. I lie awake at night, restless, replaying scenes, the pain lingers long after. So I miss out on what I love most.

I still read like the world is going to end the next day lmao. My childhood was much like you, nonnie, though I still read a lot of books/original fiction too (I’m an english teacher, so this suits me). I also read very quickly which means I have a tendency to rip through difficult scenes quickly. 

It’s an interesting question. I actually like fic BECAUSE I know what’s coming, and I won’t read fic that isn’t clearly tagged these days- I don’t have the mental energy to have the rug ripped from under me. It’s actually the hardest thing about real books for me(I’m the kid who would read the back of the book to make sure everything ended up ok). 

That being said, I have an EXTREMELY high tolerance for angst and sadness in fics (I mean, my favourite fic is Things Have Gotten Closer To The Sun by starseas aka the solar flare fic - people have called me a monster because I think it has a -relatively- happy ending). In fact, I prefer it and seek it out because I find it cathartic to read. I’m also someone who deals with emotions by detachment so sometimes feeling fic so intensely is actually really good for me. 

But there’s so much fic out there that isn’t angsty, and I will defend to my death your right to read only soft, happy fics that make you feel safe (there’s a lot of it in this fandom, too!). I really encourage you to get something like AO3 Saviour which will filter out fics that are tagged with things that you can;t handle; and you can always read them anyway, but I find it’s useful in removing the temptation to read something I know will give me bad feelings even if at the time I’m feeling masochistic. I also think practicing reading fics that build you up and don’t trigger anxiety might make you a stronger reader in an emotional sense.
