Deeply inconvenient truth many people really, really, really do not ever want to ever acknowledge much less discuss to find solutions for:

Cars are an accessibility tool.

Public transport is not safe for a variety of people and “just adding more buses and trains and making cities revolve around PT” will not actually address that.

(But nobody likes hearing about how tiny % of the population cannot reliably and safely use PT because they don’t want to actually envision what trying to accommodate that looks like)

#competing access needs are a real bitch tbh but NOBODY ever wants to account for them #when they talk about making things 'walkable' and 'improving PT systems' because it's not as simple and neat #as just making one system instead of having to accommodate multiple sets of mutually exclusive needs #i get it it's real hard and complex and a bit of a mess!! i don't blame ppl for being intimidated by it!#but it annoys me when people demonize the idea of the car while simultainously totally ignoring every single issue with their utopian vision #im not saying that trying to phase out cars and focus on PT is a bad thing #what i'm saying is that it has to be done with the understanding #that you MUST account for small %s of the population who have very specific needs #and not just brush those off as 'just stay in your house and never go to medical appointments' or 'just deal with it' because that's BS #that makes things a lot more complicated i fully admit that #but if you TRULY want a future that's greener and accessible you MUST be willing to account for people with specific needs #otherwise it's just greenwashed ableism and we see plenty of that as it is

Progressives from big cities talk big shit about how accepting they are, but I feel like if you come to them with any identifier that isn't covered in corporate sensitivity training, they have no idea what to fucking do.

Like. I experience psychosis. I tried being OPEN with my friend about it and giving them resources (articles and screenshots of tumblr posts that i felt summed up my experience) for when I had episodes. But they act like they're on fucking eggshells around me. They sidestep and look PETRIFIED when they accidentally say the word "crazy" (when I personally could not give less of a shit. As long as you're not CALLING someone crazy, then it won't warp your perception of what clinical insanity even is, so I probably won't even notice you saying it). But then they freak out and go "okay we're leaving!" when a VISIBLY mentally ill man starts screaming at a trashcan in the parking lot.

Less important, but still an example of the same thing: I'm a horse alterhuman. I identify as a horse on some level (and that level varies based on my mental state, tbh). I tried coming to this friend with THAT and the best they could do was blink and go "oh. Okay." And then they never talked about it since. Even when I bring it up or try making jokes about it, they just COMPLETELY don't react or look uncomfortable.

If I came out as a lesbian, they'd be all "oh I love and support you and accept you, and whatever you identify as is valid," but the second I say "Hey, I have this condition that makes me sometimes think that people are trying to kill me, so if I act anxious or something, you know what's up," it's all "oh. Okay. I mean, you know what's best for you. Do what you need to do to take care of yourself."

Like bitch!! My mental illness is not gonna bite you!! You're perfectly sensitive and normal about queer people, about people of color, about people with palatable mainstream mental health issues. But the second I bring something to the table that hasn't already been dropped in their lap in a perfect-PC-package, they balk like a deer in the headlights.

#notable exclusions from this post: the phrase 'balks like a bunny in a cage match' and several schizospec slurs #keeping it professional for the main blog #🐗#i found out that friend didnt even READ the psychosis related articles i sent them. after i had a psychotic meltdown at their house.#apart of me FEELS unfair writing about this because this same friend has actually been unquestioningly accommodating.#they not only remember all my dietary restrictions but they remember WHY the foods i cant have are bad for me.#when i had an episode and thought they hated me they agreed to videocall me with only them on video.#idk i just. i feel like this person could be so much better if they TRIED to approach my psychosis as well as they approch everything else #i KNOW this person could be great. but rn im too crazy to know if it's them or the socialization or cancel culture or what. im just tired #psychosis #chronic illness #chronic pain #disability #disabled #vent #long post #sry

I know we have ‘I don’t see colour’#and it’s obviously bullshit #and we’ve got a long way to go with unpacking how we see people of different races #like damn stop thinking that bc someone’s from Africa they’re starving #but also. unpack the systems that cause the world to have inequalities in access to food #and you have to actually. put things right. not just try act as if all the hurt that is done doesn’t exist #which hopefully we’ve figured out how to apply to gender hopefully that’s intuitive #some ways of of superficially ‘helping’ are infantilising and will in the end lead to that group being exploited by others #empower. capacity build. indigenous folk. trans folk. nd folk. learn to see value so much more broadly #and strength. please. learn broader ways to see strength that aren’t mutually exclusive with vulnerability #but back to my post. I hope it all makes sense why we have accommodations for neurodivergence and stuff #instead of just. people are theoretically equal so we treat them the same. learn the concept of equity

i'm always so focused on managing my much more debilitating physical symptoms that i sometimes forget that i do very much still have untreated adhd lmao

#i haven't been on meds for adhd for like probably 7-8 years now #the appointments were too much to keep up with as my physical illnesses worsened and then my dx expired and i just never got re dx'ed #i literally forget i have it and ascribe my difficulty focusing to like exclusively brain fog etc until something reminds me lol #in this case what reminded me is how i can suddenly focus so much better when i have a not-boring audiobook to listen to while i do chores #like whoops that's just an adhd accommodation #updates on my boring life

#feeling annoyed that baby is explicitly not invited to our friends' wedding which is a several hour drive away #she wouldn't cost anything for them #but we can't afford a babysitter for that whole weekend and anyways she's too young to be away from me that long #i was really looking forward to going :((( and also seeing the touristy things in the area since we've never been there before #well now we are not going.#:(#blue talks #am i breaking my lenten fast?... yes...#anyways i'm a big believer that children should be accommodated as much as possible at weddings #maybe you can't afford to have all the kids of your friends come but it's one thing if the kids are old enough to survive a weekend without #the parents and with a babysitter and/or the parents don't have to travel far #okay i'll stop now #i'm writing this all out bc i don't wanna decline the invite just yet #but yeah i have plenty of thoughts #about how children not being invited to weddings is symptomatic of the cultural divorce between marriage and children #and contributes to children's exclusion from society as full human beings #ANYWAYS #i did appreciate the way my one friend did it last year... all kids in the two families were invited #and then the babies of the friends were invited though not the older children #which i thought was a good balance between accepting children and practicalities of finance

#my doctor has been way busy so I've been on way too high a dose of medication and it's giving me insomnia #All at the end of the semester with the uni fucking up the accommodations they confirmed with me #So having to spend time i should have been using to revise for an exam instead making sure I'll actually be able to sit it #which is supposedly the full-time job of somebody else #and then having to be the only one walking the dog otherwise he exclusively demands attention from me #just... i need ten thousand dollars three months holidays and somebody to crack my back like kindling
