Femslash Exchange 2024

I wrote five fics for the FE3H Femslash Exchange, all with different ships!

My first fic was for @cynical-gamer-media, a story about Shez's disappointment that Edelgard doesn't trust her after Chapter 9 of Three Hopes. I was honored to write for one of my long time friends!

The second one was a treat for chorbits on AO3, a fluffy Edelgard x Bernadetta fic about them living their lives out post-game! It got me thinking pretty hard about mechanic/househusband Edelgard.

The third was a treat for spacelizbian on AO3, set many years after the game's end, which features all the Black Eagles. Also, everyone's trans.

To continue the Edelgard sauce, I wrote Edelgard x Hapi x Lysithea for @darkholyelf (although I admit I was also inspired by @cynical-gamer-media saying she was really interested in the ship). First time writing Hapi POV was super fun!

Lastly, I wrote some ultra-rarepair Monica x Bernadetta as a little treat for CmdrKing on AO3 featuring Monica and Bernadetta figuring out that they are gay for each other. And Monica pulls out the gayest pickup line ever.

Overall, it was a blast to participate in this event honoring my favorite women. ❤️💜🩷🧡🤎

This is the time of year I pick up the most titles (which I then work on for the rest of the year.). And why not? Everything is on sale! I actually budget for this time of year.

It’s “Tales From The Backlog” not “We buy nothing until I finish the backlog”. The backlog will never be finished.

So let’s go over what I got! Links for everything will provided. As I find people are more likely to engage if the work was already done for them. Me included. This is not necessarily a suggestion list. If you want to see if any of these games are actually any good follow my blog. But I do think it’s interesting to show people what kind of gamer you are, the games you’re attracted to, their difficulty level.

A gamer’s library says a lot about a gamer, in my opinion.

For Playstation 5:

Goodbye Volcano High:

TLDR: I put this one first because if you don’t see any of the other games on my pickup list, I AT LEAST want you to consider this one. This was the only Playstation title I picked up on sale (It is also on Steam). This is pre(historic)-apocalyptic coming of age visual novel with killer animation and music. I’m surprised I don’t see folks talk about this one more. It’s maybe the most stunning looking visual novel to come out this year. (At least at a glance)

Which is a hefty claim considering titles like Jack Jeanne and Virche Evermore: Error Salvation dropped this year. I can’t WAIT to play this one.

For Nintendo Switch:

Roots of Pacha:

I came back around to this one. It looks like Stardew Valley but with cavemen. You don’t see cavemen touched on a lot anymore so it seems different and interesting.

Wylde Flowers:

This is one see that keeps popping up in conversations and videos as a great cozy game. It’s supposed to be really good. I’m honest enough to admit that it being on the Apple app store as well as Switch makes me REALLY skeptical. But I’ve seen enough gameplay where I’m willing to take a chance.

Coromon:

I enjoy Pokemon-like titles. I don’t think we get enough of them. I love Pokemon. And you’ll be seeing my update on how I feel about Scarlet/Violet’s last piece of DLC the Indigo Disc here pretty soon.

However Pokemon is so domineering on the market that a lot of these smaller collector games get unnoticed. This seems to be a very unapologetic Pokemon-clone much like Monster Crown. Which is fine by me.

Nexomon + Nexomon: Extinction bundle:

Another very obvious Pokemon clone. But it’s obviously prettier than its Coromon counterpart. (Kinda wish the names were more unique.) I have nothing new to say here.

Monster Sanctuary:

Pokemon… but it’s a Metroidvania. $3.99. I swear the theme wasn’t intentional they just all popped up on sale at decent prices.

2021 Moon Escape:

This is from the same people who did Traumatarium. I did a review on that one a few months back. It’s on sale for $2.49. And this ISN’T my cheapest pickup for this year. The gameplay reminds me of Zelda or Star Tropics. But I don’t know much about it other than what the trailer already shows us. But also it was $2.49. It’s okay with me if it’s just okay. Not all games have to be 10/10.

Mythic Ocean:

I have a soft spot for ocean games. Even the more spooky ones like Subnautica or Dredge still have this serene element to them. Mythic Ocean is no different. You apparently help a pantheon of gods find themselves. Which in turn those choices shape the world around you. Sounds simple, short, and cute. It looked a bit explorable too? We’ll see. I’m unsure about that part. It’s on sale for $1.99. And this was my cheapest pickup this season.

For Steam:

Sonic Forces: Overclocked (Steam version REQUIRED for this)

I have, in no uncertain terms. Have played this game. I 100%ed it even. I like the game. Played better but I still like it.

HOWEVER. I haven’t played Sonic Forces Overclocked. Which requires the PC version of Sonic Forces!

This is a FAN MADE incredible mod that blows the original game out of the water apparently. This is, perhaps, my most high priority game purchase of the YEAR. And it’s only $10 to buy Forces right now. This is literally a no brainer.

Slay The Princess:

I felt like videos on this one sprung up seemingly overnight on Youtube. I watched someone play the demo and it was an awesome looking game. A horror visual novel about saving a princess is a neat little premise. This one was barely on sale, but I see myself playing this one soon because of the hype. The full voice acting is great.

Magical Diary: Wolf Hall

The original visual novel Magical Diary: Horse Hall was a game a friend showed me back in high school. Pretty innocent and cute. When this dropped in 2020 I was surprised the game got a sequel at all. The thing I remember most about Horse Hall was that there was a route where you could date Professor Snape. That wasn’t his name but… it might as well have been.

I’d like to preface this by saying I’m a super busy student in my A-Level year so I’m not actually making it. But I can make comics and explain the plot theoretically on tumblr :D

First of all it’s Katemau centric because I’m a useless bisexual.

Now more importantly, there’s two main schools in this, Phoenix Drop High and O’Kasis Academy. It’s also sort of following MCD in a more direct way? I’ll run down all the main cast

Aphmau Floraz - Age 16. She has been homeschooled her whole life and is super stoked to be attending high school. Attends PDH and gets up to general protag shenanigans.

Aaron Lycan - Age 18. Aaron is not a love interest! He’s still FC but they meet online while she’s at PDH and not before. They’re nerdy gamer friends and I <3 them. Platonic nerd aarmau for the soul

Katelyn Adhikari - Age 16. APH’S LOVE INTEREST!!! Katelyn used to attend O’Kasis Academy where she was captain of the girl’s football (soccer) team and also on the student council, run by Zane. Some shit goes down and it all ends with Zane getting Jeffery expelled and triggering a series of events that makes Katelyn want to leave. She now attends PDH and is on the football team there. She’s also Ivy’s ex :0

Nana Ishida - Age 15. Nana is a member of the baking club!! She wants to go to a technical college to become a patisserie chef and she often struggles with not being as academic as some of her friends. Lucinda is always around to give her a pep talk if she’s really struggling :,). She’s also dating Danté. She likes anime but she goes by her own name not Kawaii-Chan. Liking anime is what she bonds with Aphmau over

Danté Captain - Age 15. Danté is not gross in my rewrite, and is much more like his MCD counterpart!! After a messy breakup with Nicole, he was a bit sceptical about dating someone. However, he bonded with Nana over failing a maths test and they really hit it off. He’s really good at boxing but so far he’s never beaten Gene

Lucinda Claire - Age 16. Lucinda is an icon. She’s still a witch and she’s part of like. The main girl four (Aphmau, Katelyn, Nana and Lucinda). She’s been friends with Nana for years and the two are a very chaotic team. Teachers are warned to sit them across the room from each other when they first start, and they turn everything into a competition. Lucinda also knows how to comfort someone after a breakup or smthn, but does not do well with her own.

Laurance Zvahl - Age 17. Laurance captains the guys football (again, soccer) team and he is super messy lol. Ask him about his middle school emo phase and you are DEAD (not really, he’ll just laugh it off, then ask that you don’t mention it). Not much has changed here, but again he’s not a love interest for Aphmau really? I don’t like love triangle stuff too much so I wanna make it more slow burn adjacent. He was adopted by Hayden when he was super young and if you hurt Cadenza he will hate you forever. He did also used to roll with Gene and co

Gene Captain (18), Sasha Smyth (17), and Zenix Martinez-Jones (15) are the shadow knights still!!! They’re sort of Gene’s weird loner group, not much has changed here. Gene wants to be a boxer, Sasha gets away with everything because of her 4.0 and Zenix wears trousers 5 sizes too big for him. They’re silly.

Ivy Vernon (16) and Janus Argan (17) are kinda background antagonists for a bit??? Ivy is Katelyn’s ex and the head of the OKA girls hockey team. She’s an absolute menace . Janus is Zane’s close friend and always wants the best for him. He ends up with Zane. Janus is on the American football team.

Travis Valkrum - Age 16. I almost forgot about Travis because I do not like him at all. No Travlyn here whatsoever lmao. I will lean into the sweetheart thing he had going on in pdh!! Basically a ray of sunshine, and things pickup lines are so suave and cool. He’s really interested in classical music.

THE ROMEAVE BROTHERS: here is where we get really messy and find some main conflict

Garroth Ro’Meave - Age 18. Also no longer a love interest. Garroth Ro’Meave has a heart of gold and is always trying his best. He absolutely loves sports and board games. He could not stand his father and ran away from home in the summer between Junior and Senior year. He enrolled himself at PDH and cannot legally be made to return home, and this sets up a lot of the conflict. Garté is a very famous businessman and politician and the tabloids are finding it hard to avoid discussing the family drama, especially with Vylad being public news. Garrance is also endgame

Zane Ro’Meave - Age 16. Debate team. Anyone who knows me knows I love Zane, and I am so normal about him in this. He’s the student council head (the SC is the Jury, idk if I made that clear) at O’Kasis academy until Garté gets really antsy to get Garroth back. Garté basically forcefully transfers Zane to PDH and says he can’t go back to O’Kasis Academy until Garroth comes home. Character development and chaos ensues, while he’s finally forced to face everyone he’s hurt and his feelings about his dad. Much less importantly, Zane gets a boyfriend by the end. It’s Janus (as in the silver death), who’s been his friend the whole time.

Vylad Ro’Meave Fletcher - Age 15. Sick of her husband, Zianna had an affair with another guy. Garté didn’t like how dissimilar Vylad looked to him and forced her to get a DNA test. He basically forced Zianna to give Vylad up, and he’s currently staying in a foster home. It’s public knowledge that he is a Ro’Meave, but it’s just not really talked about in a serious context (kinda Boris Johnson’s kids). Suddenly he’s at the same school as his two older brothers and getting to reconnect with them, and it’s all a lot at once. He’s also the person who convinced Sylvanna that Aphmau should come to PDH on an open day.

It’d be kinda Sex Education vibes??? More than one main character and it focuses on all their conflicts, but the overarching story is Katemau and the conflict between Zane and Garroth, both of which would come to a peak on the night of the winter dance :)

A friend of mine recently finished Disco Elysium and was, understandably, amazed by the game. So now he would very much like to play a game in which each player interprets a facet of the personality of one singular character, with a bit of competition between each other to gain full control or influence at one point or the other.

In case you don't know Disco Elysium, other works that follow similar premises are Inside Out or the Moon Knight.

Is there any ttrpg out there for this kind of thing?

Forecaster: The Body You Share, by Rat Wave Game House.

You are an apprentice forecaster. Forecasters are responsible for sparring with weather spirits, protecting your world from natural disasters. You’ve been training for years but to physically interact with weather spirits all apprentices must undergo a journey where they will battle many tests and complete an Graduation Ritual, gifting them their true forecasting power. The ritual involves communing with a nature spirit, sharing with them a true understanding of your one self and letting them join in it. You’ve been training for years but you now have cause to suspect the ritual will fail for you. Because you are not one self. You are more than one.

Forecaster: The Body We Share is a fighting game of selves-discovery, for 2 or more players using a deck of playing cards. You tell the story of a System, four characters sharing one body, and their journey. 

This game manages to provide you with an intriguing setting while also acknowledging the real existence of pluralities and the experiences systems have. Players will take turns acting as the Front, or the character who controls the body, as well as the opponents that the body is fighting in the journey to become a Forecaster. You will pull cards from a deck to determine the moves you make, as well as how well the Body does in any given fight. Will your character pass the test? Will you be found out? Or will you find a new future for yourself? Play to find out.

After the Mind, the World Again, by Aster Fialla.

A collaborative murder mystery TTRPG inspired by the world and premise of Disco Elysium (though you don't have to have played Disco Elysium to enjoy this game!)

This game is "GM-full". There is a single player character (The Detective) and four GMs (the Facets). While The Detective acts in the world and tries to solve the mystery, the Facets both create the world in a GM capacity and bicker in The Detective's mind as characters in their own right.

The mystery is collaborative - no one knows who the murderer is in the beginning, and you'll be creating Evidence and Deductions on the fly based on your creativity and the fiction you build along the way.

This game takes many cues from Bluebeard’s Bride and Everyone is John. The Detective uses PbtA-style moves, while the Facets will use features and failures to convince the Detective to follow your hunches, and declare pieces of evidence. The Detective will then use the evidence to make a deduction, declaring which pieces are connected. Then each Facet presents their version of events, with the Detective making the final decision as to what is definitively true. If you want to play to find out the truth as you go along, then this game is probably for you! 

Bluebeard’s Bride, by Magpie Games.

Bluebeard’s Bride is an investigatory horror tabletop roleplaying game for 3-5 players, written and designed by Whitney “Strix” Beltrán, Marissa Kelly, and Sarah Richardson, and based on the Bluebeard fairy tale.

In this game you and your friends explore Bluebeard’s home as the Bride, creating your own beautifully tragic version of the dark fairy tale. Investigate rooms, discover the truth of what happened, experience the nightmarish phantasmagoria of this broken place, and decide whether or not you are a faithful or disloyal bride.

This game is Powered by the Apocalypse, and involves five different personalities that live within a singular bride. Throughout the game, you will investigate Bluebeard’s house while passing a Ring back and forth to determine who will come to the forefront for any given challenge. Will you voice your fears only to discover that it’s worse than you thought? Or will you decide to embrace the horror and take one step further towards your fate? If you want a game that will make your hair stand up and your heart drop, while wrestling to decide how exactly your protagonist will met her end, I recommend Bluebeard’s Bride. It is a lovely morning in the village, and you are a horrible ghost.

Untitled Ghost Game is a collaborative storytelling single session game for two to six players and it requires no game master.  In it you all play one poltergeist haunting a village that you come up with, explore and wreak havoc on. Bring life to a village as you create buildings and villagers to haunt, soothe or intensify a building's energy and create new poltergeists, and help villagers solve or create their unfinished business and create new ghosts.

This game is inspired by Caro Ascercion’s I’m sorry did you say street magic and Be Fae Do Crimes, by Adela Grace. You use flashcards and prompts to create a village and determine exactly what sort of mischief your poltergeist will be up to. The ghost can haunt a building or haunt a villager, collecting and flipping coins to determine the kind of village the poltergeist has transformed the town into, as well as how they affected the villagers. If you like the idea of sharing the role of a character while still causing mischief, you should check this game out.

You Reap What You Sow, by Nerdhaus Games.

We were once one thing, a common body with a common purpose. Our time among the living came to an end, but we three remain. What has summoned us mind, body, and spirit to resolve our deaths? And how will we avoid the Reapers who are trying to stop our efforts?

Play in You Reap What You Sow is card-based, with each card providing a prompt that must be answered. Each player has a suit of cards, with some prompts pushing you to draw from the deck of Reaper cards with other dangers of the afterlife. Turns consist of drawing cards and reading prompts, describing scenes, and coming to terms with your death before the Reapers get you.

This game works a little differently in that your characters don’t really have a common body that you share anymore. You are journeying through the afterlife, trying to figure out how exactly you died, while also coming to terms with the unanswered questions of your life. This game is built off of For the Queen: this means that the entire game depends on card draws and attached prompts. Each player will take turns drawing cards and answering the related prompts to build upon the unfolding story - no dice required! If you what you really like about ttrpgs is the unfolding of the story before you, this is a game worth checking out.
