In psychology, this is known as the Dunning-Kruger effect.
Poor students lack insight into their own limitations – as they would have to know about the vast amount of knowledge out there to be able to see how little they know in comparison. That means that those who are not very good at something tend to be overly confident, while those who have made an effort tend to underestimate their abilities. Poor students also have no trouble finding a question to write about: they neither lack opinions nor the confidence that they have already thought them through. They also won’t have trouble finding confirming evidence in the literature as they usually lack both interest and skill to detect and think through disconfirming facts and arguments.

i dont consider myself a 'fashion guru' by any means but one thing i will say is guys you dont need to know the specific brand an item you like is - you need to know what the item is called. very rarely does a brand matter, but knowing that pair of pants is called 'cargo' vs 'boot cut' or the names of dress styles is going to help you find clothes you like WAAAYYYY faster than brand shopping
#also theres no one good place to learn this generally ive picked up yhe knowledge by asking questions#or reading through catalogues. paying attention to the words used to describe clothing styles i like

i had a thought of "do people not know what AUs are anymore?" and then i remembered nobody explains fandom stuff to new people anymore so it is entirely plausible people genuinely don't know what AUs are and nobody has explained it to them, so for today's lucky 10,000:
"AU" stands for "Alternate Universe" or "Alternative Universe" (same difference) and is basically any thought scenario for a fandom that isn't canon and can't fit within the canon universe. If it takes place in the canon universe but something is notably different, that is typically what's known as a "Canon divergent AU," because it diverges from canon.
an AU can be absolutely anything. There's a couple of widespread pan-fandom au scenarios that often get thrown around, like coffee shop aus, genderbend aus, hanahaki aus (hanahaki is a whole thing in itself i'd recommend researching on your own), etc. One you might hear sometimes is "crossover AU" which is when you have characters from one fandom interacting with characters from another.
You can have as many aus as you want. They can be whatever you want and you can do whatever you want in them. It's a sandbox for you to play around in and explore how things would be different or how the characters would act in those circumstances or environments. Maybe they have different relationships with each other. Maybe they behave slightly differently. Or you can just say "Okay, [x] is true. How did they get here? How would things have to be different for this to occur?" which can also be fun.
If you are ever confused about why people ship something that seems completely out of the blue or doesn't make sense to you in the canon setting, there's a good chance they like it in an AU setting! Not everything everybody is interacting with is necessarily the canon! Not everybody wants things to exist in canon and just want to explore playing dolls in a different sandbox and that's okay. And their sandbox might look a lot different than yours, and that's also okay. You have the freedom to make your sandbox whatever you please. Do whatever you want forever. Get funky with it. AUs are fun.
Okay that's my schpeal. everybody go have fun and play nice now.
#fandom#fandom infrastructure#fandom history#was working on the ship polls blog and the comments i get there often reminded me of this#every once in a while i've gotta reacquaint myself with the xkcd expert familiarity comic principle#and the general knowledge that people dont explain the basics of fandom anymore so people have to learn it on their own#while everybody just expects them to know it and that's not fair to them!#i will also put my usual thing: folks are always welcome to ask me anything about fandom stuff#it can be specific pjo fandom stuff or general pan-fandom stuff#i have been in fandom for a long time and i am happy to explain things#legitimately if anyone ever has questions about even the most basic of fandom stuff. go for it. i love talking about it

a minor headcanon that I will die defending is that reigen initially assumed that mob’s supposed “psychic powers” were just how he rationalized his autism to himself. like here’s an obviously autistic kid, one reigen clocks immediately because he’s, well, reigen, and he’s talking about extra sensory perception and having powers he can’t control, powers that are scary. obviously, he assumes, this is something the kid picked up from his parents, a way for him to rationalize his alienation from other children— that no, you’re not “different”, you’re special (not even going into the parents who think their autistic children are like, aliens) and the other kids can see that you’re special and so they treat you like you’re weird and creepy and they don’t invite you to play and they whisper behind your back but it’s fine, because one day they’ll see how special you really are. and adult autistic reigen arataka, who was also probably-definitely bullied as a child, decides to nip that thought in the bud and gives the whole spiel, that no, “psychic powers” (autism) don’t make you special, and yes, they do make you different, and that’s fine because everyone’s different, and at the end of the day you have agency and you get to decide the kind of person you’ll be, so choose to be a kind one, and he sees this kid hanging off his every word as he tells him the kind of stuff he wishes someone had told him when he was so little and alone, and he mentally pats himself on the back and hypes himself up for another cigarette.
and then the kid makes a teacup float in front of him and he’s like oh. damn. can you kill ghosts
#mob psycho 100#reigen arataka#shigeo kageyama#i find it very interesting how espers are treated in universe as like. not really cryptids but also not really something normal either.#like mob doesn’t really hide his abilities and he doesn’t really get singled out for them (mostly because he doesn’t use them casually)#so they’re obviously known to exist by the general populace. but reigen is also genuinely surprised to learn that espers besides mob exist#and did believe that baby mob was trying to prank him when he called himself an esper so like. exactly how common knowledge are they?#saw someone on Reddit posit that they’re known about but ignored because it’s funnier that way and no joke that’s probably the actual answe

At the World Economic Forum, President Donald Trump stated that the US doesn't need Canadian energy, vehicles, or lumber, reiterating his threat of imposing tariffs on Canadian imports—potentially up to 25% by February 1.
Trump suggested Canada could avoid tariffs by "becoming a state," sparking gasps in the Davos audience. The threat has caused unease in Canada, which exports 75% of its goods to the US. Canadian leaders, including Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, have vowed a "dollar-for-dollar" countermeasure if tariffs are enacted, while pitching Canada as a secure and reliable trading partner.

thinking about veilguard and bioware in general, i think we are reaching a point where people need to grapple with the inherent limits of what stories can be told in our Current Society and in AAA gaming companies.
on a labour level: mass layoffs, tons of developers leaving despite previously talking about how passionate and happy they were to be involved, not even paying severance, and crunching employees to the point of burnout. this is unfortunately pretty standard for AAA game companies.
on a cultural level: it is SO white and SO centrist-ly Canadian. i wrote up these asks outlining how. it is a repeated pattern of writing in which they go into tortured racial oppression allegories at best, while constantly peppering in a "but BOTH SIDES were wrong and made mistakes :( :( :(", in between their fictional atrocities that are clearly mirroring irl genocides and enslavement. or at worst, it's "the qunari are radical islamic borg" which has even less nuance. i personally thought, since dai came out in 2014, and a lot has changed since then about the world and in public awareness, that this would have filtered into the narrative and resulted in more satisfying and historically grounded writing. unfortunately not the case. it's shocking if you compare it to how sharp and aware and unflinching something like disco elysium is.
so what does this mean?
under these conditions, it is unavoidable that we get development by people who are rapidly cycled out of the company or demoralized into burnout. we get digestible, easy little soundbites of lore without much substance, because any complexity needs more time and coordination rather than the process of "quick, we have these assets, a lot of people involved in making them just got laid off, we need to make Something by next quarter to show the CEO". we get very little cohesion between games, despite the clear intent from dai to have so many plot points set up to follow through in a sequel, because the team and development are so chaotic that they can't hold onto a vision and complete it.
we also get this inherent caution and "conservatism" from the narrative, because on an ideological level, they're largely white people who want cops to be included in pride. so any major change to even a fictional society is Bad and Scary, and shouldn't be done without making sure that every character finger-wags appropriately at non-state violence. there is clearly not much ideological or even ethnic diversity within the leadership; or at least not enough that anyone there felt comfortable even speaking up on minor issues like the Incredibly Orientalist Isabela Outfit, let alone anything larger.
i don't personally think there's too much value in trying to analyze veilguard's plot or lore at this point. the final product is chaotically developed and does not seem to reflect the goals of the creators as set up in prior games, it's basically a ship of theseus in terms of the people and ideas involved in making it. this is sad for all of us, who were interested in the story, and attached to the characters, and were creatively fulfilled by engaging in the fandom. it's probably worse for the developers who have lost their jobs, burnt out, or feel unhappy with the game that they spent years of their life working on. it's certainly miserable as an indictment of The Industry, as well as the general societal climate of white Canadian centrism.
the solution is to create a society where people can develop games in peace and prosperity and stay on projects for longer, rather than constantly getting turfed out without severance pay. and to get some genuine leftists, poc, and indigenous people on staff who can weigh in and provide significant input, rather than a Council Of Liberal White Edmontonians every time.
in the meantime, at the very least, let's please stop preordering AAA games and supporting companies who notably abuse their employees.
#veilguard critical#bioware critical#txt#or...! people get really into godot or renpy or something and create an incredibly high effort unpaid project of dubious legality#if anyone wants to do that blink twice.#really the disappointment about dragon age (to me) is that interactive narratives have so much potential as a method of storytelling#but they did not really even scratch the surface in this one#and probably never will again bc the company seems to be hemorrhaging staff like crazy#if you compare this to something like supergiant games it's wild#they've been retaining their staff for like 15 years and you can SEE them building and progressing from each game and learning from it#and their games are beautiful and incredibly innovative and well written#and from what i know they prioritize work-life balance and refuse to crunch even if it's 'voluntary'#and meanwhile bioware is going from uhhh. me3 to anthem to andromeda to veilguard.#with the crunch being a compounding issue all the way through and probably contributing to a lot of mistakes and talent loss#anyway my only experience in game dev is fooling around by myself on dumb ideas but#i think even just from a general project management perspective it's clear that it's not possible to have good output#under these types of chaotic situations with a lack of leadership and retained knowledge

I am an APOLLO fan. if I wanted a character who doesn't have 4000 years of lived experience and is a metaphysical building block of the world then I would've chosen one of the humans. get this erasure and character assassination AWAY from me

On a semi related note the more I am subjected to Microsoft products the more I become convinced that the reason so many people these days believe themselves to be “bad with computers” is that the programs they are forced to use in their professional life are utterly incomprehensible to ANY rational human being and they are (rightfully enough) extrapolating out that this is just how computers are. They aren't!!! In their quest to remove all the “scary” details from their poor fragile end users Microsoft have created an ecosystem that behaves completely erratically and unpredictably and is by definition unknowable. Things just happen. Then they stop happening. Nothing ever announces why or how. Just a thousand vague and useless popups that may or may not be there tomorrow. I PROMISE computers are actually extremely simple and logical beasts.
#brain.txt#the biggest barrier to widespread linux adoption is the fear of learning something new and i get it i really do#when youre at zero knowledge and dont even know where to begin its completely overwhelming and so much easier to stick with what you know#but the problem is no one ever really knows windows#youre sharing your room with a wild animal#you believe you know its mannerisms well enough to know when it is hungry and what it likes and dislikes but one day it might lash out#and there will be no way of ever knowing why#with open source software the only barrier to knowledge is how far you want your own curiosity to carry you at present#and yeah! ill readily admit!! theres plenty of components of my system i dont know too much about right now#but i feel inherently less lost and helpless knowing that the information is out there and i am actually capable of reading it#instead of someone actively obfuscating all possible attempts at understanding and also constantly changing everything from under me#(i have never owned a mac in my life so idk whats going on over there but my general impression seems to be that mac at least gets the whole#walled garden thing right in the sense that it is a cohesive and functional experience despite being extremely locked in. which i have more#respect for as a solution i am not interested in but i can see the appeal of rather than the FUCKING DISASTER microsoft has unleashed)

it’s hard to see, but the mark on his forehead isn’t an actual eye. it’s a marking he applied himself as a monument of respect to integrity, knowledge, and all the scholars who came before him. his wisdom is a blessing from the world around him, and the mark honours it, reminds him of it.
once he falls from grace, he never bothers to apply it again 😋

cant get over the fungi on ruidus sorry. i have more to say
its implied that the reilorans are able to survive and farm the fungus, theres at least 347 different species of fungus native (?) to ruidus, and theres also slime molds*. evolutionarily (assuming the life evolved independently on ruidus which is a very bold assumption) this would imply that theres also prokaryotic life (bacteria, basically) and likely advanced eukaryotic organisms in the form of animal life, which we do see! its very possible that the reason theres so little plant life on ruidus is because something about the makeup of the planet is aggressively harmful to plants, if i had to guess its the lack of easily available sunlight due to the constant dust storms and the soil is probably unfavorable for growing. this probably means that fungus makes up the majority of the biomass for animals to consume or animals are much more adapted for absorbing nutrients from the soil/other sources.
i do think its interesting that fungus seem to survive and thrive SO well in the deep caverns because most fungus (on earth, and exandria. probably) are decomposers and need organic material to survive off of. they could be decomposing the crystal corpse of predathos though, which is the coolest idea in the world to me, or they could just do so well that they've created an independent ecosystem underground complete with its own n- and c-cycles.
the fungus on ruidus seem to take more after kingdom animalia in general, since theyre motile (for those unawares, fungus are actually MUCH much much more related to animals than they are to plants, so this isnt that out there) which is super cool. the myceits are somehow related to the fungi's sexual reproduction because we see the sterile mycelium on it's own and it doesn't seem to be producing any spores, where the myceits do have spore producing structures (specifically they have hymenophores, since they are most similiar to hymenomycete mushrooms). so i think its likely the myceits are just advanced forms of spore dispersal and will run around till they find somewhere favourable to drop spores (or passively will drop them as they move) and probably they have very short life spans </3 sorry myceits
also myceit = mycete = fungi kingdom. proof of earth-equivalent taxonomy existing in exandria? possibly why the ruidians call them myceits is because theyve seen botanists dream about mushrooms and refer to them as "mycetes" !
*gaz, the source for the # of fungus, seems to consider slime molds a kind of fungus, so its unclear whether all the species are actually true fungi, but i digress because slime molds are closely related to fungus anyway. also 347 is a really low number of species for an entire planet, but whatever.
#dont look that closely into how things could have evolved from bacteria at all without an ocean....... shhhhhhhh#im afraid that the nerd brain is chronic. i love to learn and to apply knowledge#sorry im in my botany head era right now. im done with my general botany course and all the info just needs somewhere to go#why not use it for some interesting analysis on ruidus. im sure at least one of my followers enjoys this yapping#ramblings#cr spoilers#bc its using info from the most recent ep as if anyone cares about fungus spoilers. Like the answers, I got more of that’s ok? If not just ignore lol
1: what voices do you hear for Bart and Thad? Like for Bart, I hear kid Simba’s voice from Lion King
2: what’s Bart and thads favorite movies?
3: what’s their favorite type of genre?
4: what type of music do they listen to? For Thad I can imagine goth to heavy metal lol
oho!
1: ouff i've been asked this before but i don't really have a definitive answer sadly!! in a perfect world they'd both have the same voice but with very different cadence/timbre/vocal quality.
i think a good general vibe of what i picture for Bart is something like Rob Lowe as Sodapop in the Outsiders. he's got an earnestness i like, and i feel like Bart should have a southern accent considering he learned english in Alabama (altho the Outsiders is set in oklahoma but like i said, general vibe)
i havent found a voice that matches with how i picture Thad sadly :( although i still think Evan Rachel Wood's performance as Old Dolio in Kajillionare is closest. not in sound but the raspy gravelly quality and her flat affect.
2-3: ach.... really not sure for these ones... im pretty sure Bart canonically likes action/adventure movies but like a lot of his canon interests id say that falls under Nonspecific Teen Boy Demographic
but if you want my personal headcanons... im also not sure! havent thought about it much. i will say Bart doesn't really seem the type to sit through slow-paced dramas or meditative arthouse stuff, probably tending towards action and comedy. Thad on the other hand i could see getting WAY too pretentious about obscure films nobody has heard of
4: music!! im attached to the idea that Thad unironically enjoys almost every genre of music regardless of quality - both bc it is funny but also he has no frame of reference for whats cool or not! he finds stuff to like about everything. i think Bart probably hops genres in a similar way, but is less adventurous in his tastes lol
#asks#pin-crusher2000#i want everybody to read Frequency with the knowledge that Bart and all his clones have southern accents the whole time ok#Bart learned english in alabama#Thad learned english from watching Bart#maybe jude and nathaniel have fainter accents because they speak more like CRAYDL#who i picture with a more "generic US accent'' like siri or other automated voices#and idk Six mightve consciously changed his accent just bc he likes to be special#but everybody else should talk like they learned english in alabama bc they did

Thinking a little bit about that one "I'm an English major and a professional as opposed to you amateurs" anon. Gonna roast 'em a little bit, but with the intention of addressing a thing we've had in mind for a while.
Real talk, coming from someone who WAS an English major; majoring in English is not necessarily a guarantee that someone is a good writer. For one, you can be bad at your major, full stop. For another, it's not even a guarantee that someone identifies as a writer to begin with. English as a major is pretty broad, and it covers reading too, among other things. There's library science, analytical academia, historical preservation & interpretation (MEDIEVAL MANUSCRIPTS HELL YES), editing, nonfiction trades (often crosses over with STEM majors), marketing (crosses over with business majors), and also book design and typography (<3 <3 <3 our favorite, crosses over with art majors).
Someone can major in English and take a specific minor with the goal of falling into a trade that is not writing literary fiction. In fact, we would argue that most people who get something useful out of their major are the ones that do that.
It's also worth noting that it's possible to be an English major focused on "lowbrow" fiction. There are people who major in English and use the experience towards the end of writing erotica. There are people who major in English with the intent to write genre fiction. There are people who major in English to study the history and social context of fanfiction.
These things are, in fact, worthy fields of study! The realm of the "amateur" is the realm where a lot of cultural conversations and innovations happen!
Expecting English as a major to be a tract specifically for producing acclaimed literary fictionists is not realistic, not how the discipline typically works, and it's certainly not a thing you can use to hold over other writers' heads. It is perfectly possible for people to write good things (professional-grade things even) without ever touching a college course.
I sat through so much bad writing in college. Technically bad, thematically bad, gramatically bad. And I routinely bump into non-graduate authors who write texts, formal and informal alike, that blow my own writing clean out of the water with their quality.
In short, dismissing other people in your general field as "amateurs" who are beneath you is an incredibly unprofessional thing to do.
#writeblr#basically this is an anti-elitism post#sometimes we see elitism creeping back into writeblr#and as academia enthusiasts we feel the need to respond to it by whacking it with a broom#because! if you were really dedicated to the honing and preservation of knowledge & skill! you would NOT! be! dismissing people offhand!#and you would especially not be putting them down to boost your own ego!#you would be learning from them or politely leaving them the FUCK alone to do their own thing while you focus on yours!#*general you here#i know we sound angry here but please imagine us saying all of this with wicked glee while whacking Amateur Anon with said broom#because we are saying it out of enthusiasm for the people who are making cool things around here#ourselves included because we are not allowed self-deprication anymore
