Hi Crow! Was wondering, how do you define spell?

That's a good question, and in the past when I've tried to answer it I've gone in like "I've got this 👍" and come out like "Fuck, what IS a spell??"

I tend to think that a spell has to be deliberate...

*starts thinking about the evil eye a little too hard*

Yeah, probably has to be deliberate... I guess...

Maybe...

But yeah, something like:

intent/focus + power + action = spell

The intent/focus (or whatever you want to call it -- people will get really into semantics about this, and while finding a word with the exact nuance you're looking for here can be helpful, at this point it just makes me tired) is important because it's the reason behind the spell, and hopefully something you feel strongly about, because that feeling can go a long way in making the spell successful. Figuring out good, accurate statements of intent is a big factor for a lot of people. This is, however, not the whole spell, and not the only thing that determines if the spell does what you want it to (more on this later).

The power is what makes the spell go. How you power your spells will depend a bit on your paradigm, but the power can come from spirits, gods, yourself, or something else depending on your framework. You must raise and channel this power to do your bidding, and that's basically what a spell is. Also, depending on your paradigm, this might be a very large, or a practically unnoticeable part of the spell.

The actions part of a spell is really quite variable. Some of the actions involved might be about making offerings to a being you wish to borrow power from (and in this way they might actually be part of the raising power portion of the spell), others are more symbolic of what you'd like to happen to your target. Here's the thing -- if your actions and intent are at odds, then your spell is a lot less likely to do what you're expecting it to do (at least this is my opinion). If you're doing a spell to try to help someone, you probably don't want to make a poppet of them and toss it into an ant hill, for instance.

I'm also liable to change my mind about this in the next 5 minutes... because there is a lot of grey area with things that are magic but not necessarily spells. Or maybe they are spells. I don't know.

A while back I asked folks to tell me what they considered the anatomy of a spell to be, and to recycle a metaphor I used back then, it was kind of like asking people to tell me how they cook a meal. Some people included things like grocery shopping, setting the table, and doing the dishes after. Some just gave me the basic steps of a recipe. Meanwhile, I was going "Is an apple a meal? Is a chocolate bar a meal??"

I'm still not 100% on what counts as a meal.

Hey adults: Why do you like being an adult? What do you like about your life?

A couple weeks ago I told the kids at my work that "Being an adult is pretty nice, actually," and they looked shocked, laughed incredulously, and told me I was the first person they'd ever heard say that

So clearly we adults need to talk about this way more often

The past few years have been hard for a lot of people, me included. Covid sucked. I lost three relatives and three pets in one year. Right after lockdown ended, I got badly injured, and ended up housebound for six months and (much more) disabled for two years, and that sucked too.

And you know what? Literally all of that was easier and better than being a teenager.

I like being an adult. I like my life. Even when it's hard, it's mine, and I am building to the best of my ability the a life that I want to live.

I talked about a lot of why being an adult is something worth looking forward to in my last post, so right now I'll simply say this:

I love actually knowing who I am now. I love that I learned and am learning what I want and need. I love that I have independence and autonomy and don't get treated like a kid. I love the fact that I'm the one who gets to decide want I want to do and what I need. I also love that I'm learning to sew. I love that I've had pet rats, and next will have a pet cat. I love that I got top surgery. I love the way I've decorated my room. I love traveling to visit and crash and even just hang out and do work with my friends, when I can. I love that I started reading good news every day, and that I actually have hope for the future, and that I started this blog and have been able to help give so many other people hope, too.

So, here's a call to action for my fellow adults: comment or reply or tag what you like about being an adult. What you love about your life.

Let's give some kids some reasons for hope.

i originally started this just a few days before janice burgess passed away. if you have been following me for a while, you'd know that the backyardigans is still one of my all time favorite shows to this day: a major brainworm ive had since i was first popped out the womb.

she had such a huge hand in me and my siblings childhoods outside of backyardigans, as well, and i cant understate how much it means to me to see a black woman have such a major role in various popular animated franchises.

RIP to one of my greatest animation inspos, ESPECIALLY when it comes to children's entertainment. the fact that mrs. burgess passed on the day before my birthday hurts especially, so i dedicate this drawing to her! i would not be who i am w/o these goobers, so thank you

what happens after is that cross tries to take the bowl back and they drop it breaking it, nightmare comes in all pissed at the noise, and gives them a spanking(he doesnt spank them he just tells them to stop being dumbasses).

might be worth noting that tubbo got lore today because he made it canon he warped back from the boat.

i think this was confusing bc he wasn't sure initially how to play it (he is not a lore guy by trade we all know this), and waffled back and forth with it (with fun bits like "it's tuesday" or "it's a time rift"), but he definitely did make it canon.

he has the story: the boat didn't leave, he had his warpstone. he knew they would just steal him back, like they did the first time.

he has the reason: he desperately needed to see sunny before he left; couldn't sit idly by

and he made it clear that's what he wants to have happened. he told his chat to stop "-rp point"-ing him about it multiple times bc he's trying to make it canon (and told fit the same when he came back post-ghost bit).

he also asked sunny's admin whether she wanted their interactions to be filler or canon and she chose canon

plus he had a canon interaction with forever explaining it and asking him to watch over his daughter

and he and sunny built things and interacted with each other based specifically off the info he was kidnapped, that he will have to go, and that they both knew it was coming

so while you may have to ignore or recontextualize some of the goofier interactions when he initially came back (phil/etoiles/fit stuff esp), tubbo did come back, the code attack did happen, it's already been fit into the lore, and i don't doubt sunny is going to tell fit about it this week!!
