helpful sites for writers

i have a little collection of websites i tend to use for coming up with ideas, naming people or places, keeping clear visuals or logistics, writing basics about places i've never been to, and so on. i tend to do a lot of research, but sometimes you just need quick references, right? so i thought i'd share some of them!

Behind the Name; good for name meanings but also just random name ideas, regardless of meanings.

Fantasy Name Generator; this link goes to the town name generator, which i use most, but there are lots of silly/fun/good inspo generators on there!

Age Calculator; for remembering how old characters are in Y month in Z year. i use this constantly.

Height Comparison; i love this for the height visuals; does character A come up to character B's shoulder? are they a head taller? what does that look like, height-wise? the chart feature is great!

Child Development Guide; what can a (neurotypical, average) 5-year-old do at that age? this is a super handy quickguide for that, with the obviously huge caveat that children develop at different paces and this is not comprehensive or accurate for every child ever. i like it as a starting point, though!

Weather Spark; good for average temperatures and weather checking!

Green's Dictionary of Slang; good for looking up "would x say this?" or "what does this phrase mean in this context?" i love the timeline because it shows when the phrase was historically in use. this is english only, though; i dig a little harder for resources like this in other languages.

1- Take your time to write a formal report that includes the dates and times of the event and evidence supporting the content of the report

2- Do not exaggerate in describing events. Presenting and describing the facts as they happened will benefit the Palestinian cause more

3- Make sure that the information contained in the report is factual and to the point.

Here I have all my comic dubs in a neat little row for you all to peruse through. :) All the ones I have above are TMNT based. Each dub is family friendly, (as in no vulgar language or nsfw content), and there will always be warnings if the video contains any of the following, (Vomiting, Blood, Panic Attacks, Death). All my dubs have an addition of sound effects, ambience, editing, and music, as well as my voice doing all the dialogue, (and A Cappella theme song for my Mutation Situation Comic Dubs!)

I have been given permission by the creators of every comic to dub over them. None of the art is mine, and the links for every creator's page will be in the description of the video. :)

Some D&D Resources

Most are fairly obvious, some are my more obscure favs. I'll try to order them based on how often I use them.

Dungeon Master's Vault - It's basically an alternative to D&D Beyond that lets you make character sheets, and helps you run games. Has all the SRD content automatically, and lets you add your own stuff to it. It's not everyone's cup of tea, but it's personally been a godsend for me. Also has some funky (non-AI) generators for names, towns, cities etc. But that's not it's core appeal.

AlchemyRPG - This was really helpful for virtual games during the lockdown. You can create immersive scenes with different ambient sounds, and encounter music. It also has a battlemap mode with tokens on it to represent the PCs and Monsters. You can also create NPCs and Monsters on it, but I'll admit it's a bit tedious. I've been able to run it on my laptop with minimal issues, but if you have something like a Chromebook it might cause some lag.

Tabletopaudio - Great for finding ambient music for D&D

Sound Cloud - It sounds out of pocket, but out of the 'mainstream' music platforms, I've found it easiest to find ambient music on Sound Cloud specifically.

2minutetabletop - Has nice maps and tokens, really great stuff.

Arcana Wiki - This is pretty funky, it has real world historical and cultural information, as well as a handful of conspiracies, fun to browse and find inspiration.

Kastark, Donjon Encounter Size Calculator, and KoboldPlus - All calculate encounter difficulty ratings so you, as a GM, don't completely TPK your DnD party. Kobold does this best imo, but it's down to preference. Pretty sure Kastark also has an initiative tracker here.

GMBinder - Has great homebrew finds for Players and GMs. It's also what I use to format my homebrew pages. If it doesn't suit you, Homebrewery is a well known alternative.

5esrd - While it contains SRD content, I also use it for Homebrew finds, as it has a list that credits some homebrew source books that I like to check out on DMsGuild.

5etools - Fairly obvious, it has a bunch of stuff, and is also great for looking up information about player options.

r/DnDMaps - If you use the search function, it's fairly straight foward to find a map for your location. Also, they have a rule against AI, which is a huge plus.

Thanks but I already watched it on WCO. Great show, will probably watch again within the year. It was a good use of 8 hours over the 4 days I watched it. I just wish I could have learned more about tulip and her "reflection" after their arcs finished.

Some good clean fanfiction would be nice. I'm not a fan of porn and I hate that that's what a lot of people think of when they read the word fanfiction. I know clean fanfiction exists but there are thousands of tags and it's too much to filter out.

hello!! this isn't a request but rather a question - do you have any tips on making layouts like you do (not in the literal sense, but when it comes to making layouts in general ,,)? i usually struggle to make the coloring look good/fit the theme, and i can't seem to find any good pngs to use ,,,

Generally, I'd say to collect a bunch of resources you can use, like PNGs, laces, colouring PSDs, etc. You can find a bunch by browsing related tags here on Tumblr ( ie. [aesthetic] png, rentry png, [colour] png, etc. ) or on Pinterest by searching similar things and things like [aesthetic] frame, [colour] frame, rentry frame, rentry resources, etc etc. You can also look on sites that have a bunch of free use PNGs, vectors, etc ( though I'd highly recommend having an ADblocker and popup blocker ). I have a large collection of random things I use and it helps a lot!

I don't have many tips for making layouts since I honestly just mess around a lot until I get something I like, so I'd say just play around with placement and combining things until you get something you think looks nice! Trust the process and just have fun with it, if something doesn't work out, that's fine too! The important part is just having fun with what you're doing, it's a hobby, not a job you're forced to do.

As far as colouring goes, it's just something you learn as you go, I think. I'm still not terribly good at making colouring PSDs and I've been editing for over a year now. You can always search DeviantArt or Tumblr for colouring PSDs by searching things like 'free psd' or something.

Some sites you may find helpful: da-lace : has TONS of laces, you can navigate via the shapes at the top or by category on mobile I believe. vecteezy : tons of free to use downloadable PNGs, vectors, etc. pngtree : ^ same as above, I'd recommend an adblocker / popup blocker. gif editor : does cool gif effects remove gif bgs : what it says. gif effects : can do fun stuff with it but it adds a background.

More specific sites: barrachiverio : custom error message PNGs. gradient maps : what it says.

I was thinking about the current political shit going on, and let me tell ya, i’m sick to my stomach over this. I know that a lot of things are happening. I know that there is a lot of bad things. I know that there are some good things. The most important take away i have realized though, is that we must band together and fight back. Fuck infighting. Fuck squabbling over who gets to call themselves what. Fuck trying to tell people what to do bc you don’t understand.

Put your differences aside and fight. Back. Fight as safely as you can, fight as best as you can. We have to come together and fucking fight.
