Question! I have been getting into DC comics cuz of dpxdc, and I saw your tags on frank Miller on a recent post. One of my irl friends told me to read the dark knight returns and while it was occasionally hard to follow I assumed that was a result of when it was written rather than who wrote it? But I did overall enjoy it.

I guess what I'm asking is why you say frank Miller is a bad writer when it seems like the dark knight returns was so acclaimed?

ok so. A lot of this is my personal opinion and I'm not too equipped to say shit about this because I'm not very political but I'm going to give it my best shot. Put under a cut so folks who don't want to hear about comic ranting can simply scroll past

I’m just gonna write a quick thing for the Nazi stuff, He isn't exactly a Nazi but boy oh boY does he set off many warning flags. Frank Miller is also the writer of the comic 300, if that sounds familiar that's because the movie you're probably thinking of is indeed based off these comics. The Spartan's ideology helped create the baselines of Fascism. Fascism is a pretty leading cause of commentary in Frank Millers work. In Batman: The Dark Knight he is a fascist. In Hard Boiled there's swastikas in the background every so often. (I even went back to reread it just to make sure and yep. they definitely were there) In 300 there's a shitton of Fascism... I could go on but still. His comics are incredibly gorey, have a discussion about a world gone wrong that can only be changed using force and weaponry (the whole Dark Knight "I am a surgeon" monologue for example), and the fact that he has Fascism as the main point of nearly all of the comics he's written... it doesn't sit right with me and it's a consistent pattern.

Now, onto the bad writing. I must firstly preface that these are my own opinions and that I didn't grow up reading Frank Miller's work. I think he was a good writer but isn't one anymore. His writing did incredible things for DC and you can see his influence in Batman even today. Works I've read and enjoyed of his are: Daredevil, Batman Year One, and Dark Knight. Nowadays you'll see many folks like myself talk about how Frank Miller has fallen off the deep end. A vast majority of Frank Miller's comics have reoccurring themes: politics, fascism, extreme violence, and so so much weaponry. Politics is in every comic book. There is no unpolitical comic, there ARE comics that are batshit wild with their politics and that's what I'm talking about. I'll get back to this later. He wrote many good comics, ones that first come to mind are Daredevil , Wolverine, Batman: Dark Knight, Batman: Year One, Sin City, Ronin, and 300. All of these comics are still credited by folks as amazing comics and hell, I recommend folks to read them go and check them out. Then 9/11 happened. That along with rampant alcoholism. Those reoccurring themes I mentioned? They become exponentially more blatant in his works. Especially on the political angle. You can see the difference between his works from pre and post 9/11. If you read Dark Knight and Dark Knight 2 back to back. It's night and day. He even made a comic during the post 9/11 panic called Holy Terror. The comic's title was originally pitched as Holy Terror, Batman! with the Gotham hero himself as the main character but it swiftly denied by DC, denied being published by DC, and changed to what it is now. The basic plot of this comic: A Vigilante named The Fixer fights Al-Qaeda after attacking Empire City. He doesn't even mention the word Al-Qaeda until 80 pages into a 150 page comic. The comic is some INCREDIBLY blatant post 9/11 propaganda that's ridiculously Islamophobic and anti-muslim. That isn't even my opinion, Frank Miller has said that's what this comic was. It is scattered with a ridiculous amount of hate speech written by a hate fueled man in 2007. Now onto comics that you'd more likely read. All Star Batman and Robin (2005). Oh boy. Let's compare shall we? Batman Dark Knight Returns (1986)

I don't even think I need to explain myself. This is Spider-Man: One More Day levels of mischaracterization. Like seriously. Bruce kidnapping Dick after his parents were killed? Calling him a retard and hitting him during the aftermath (we can go on about how in 2005, the r slur was used commonly but this was just out of pocket), Leaving him in the cold batcave and told to eat rats? Frank Miller used to write some incredible works. Nowadays his writing is as decent as Rob Liefeld's art.

i think something like reader is working for the PM and just sort of observes Dazai as boss and how he seems so detached/lonely like he's planning something that only he knows abt and reader basically tries saying they're here for him if he needs to get anything off of his chest but naturally he would reject any and all warmth offered to him at this point but maybe you or someone else can come up with a better idea i'm just so? hype that u would consider writing this at all i love uuuu

— In which you beg Dazai to let you in.

The Port Mafia Boss isn’t kind.

You know this as if you breathe it, you know this in the same way you know how your chest rises and falls rhythmically to the sound of your breath escaping your lungs.

Osamu Dazai, is not kind.

A man who wears stained bandages like armour, draped in black from head to toe, a constantly persistent smile stretching out his full features.

As if he and the Mafia are interlinked in a sick relationship, in which he himself became his own twisted personification of destruction when stealing the title of “Boss.”

Your skin crawls when he looks at you, your heart pounding within your chest, a melody of trepidation and what should be hate.

And yet when you stare at him under yoru apprehensive gaze, fearful to catch his eye and hold it, you pity him as though blind to your own sullied breath.

And Dazai knows this, and he loathes it, like he loathes his own understandings.

You are not a character in his plan, nor a plot in this narrative yet you reoccur timelessly in each chapter, a smudged, incomprehensible word on each page in which he can’t decipher.

This isn’t real. He repeats to himself again, moving his hand from his face and onto the cold wood surface of his desk.

His office is dark, the natural light from the day diminished in the dark curtains drawn across the windows, isolating him in blackness.

There’s a single light on his desk, painting a dull ray of light across his written ponderings, Atsushi’s name circled and underlined beside Aktugawa’s written in the same manner.

His writing looks frantic, written in a passionate haste of forethought. Each pen stroke getting more and more aggressive as you follow the line of text until arriving at the abrupt conclusion.

“Odasaku lives”.

There’s a knock on his door and he knows it’s you.

You always knock in patterns, a slight hesitation after the first time your knuckle meets the door surface, before following it through with two more knocks.

You don’t wait for him to allow you in, assuming you missed the sound of his voice, the door swings open and you walk in.

“Y/N” He greets, his gaze cutting into your narrowed eyes, adorned with a frown.

You bow your head slightly, attempting to grace him with a greeting devoid of apprehension.

The slight tip in your step blows your cover and you wince as an atonement of your failure.

“Are you busy Sir?” You ask, your hands clasped behind your back.

Dazai flicks a stray piece of paper away from his body, it floats off of his desk and slides across the floor towards you.

“I’m always busy.”

Your eyes flicker towards it and away, trying to absorb any and all traces of curiosity as you ignore the cursive writing before you.

It’s not your place to read into the Bosses writings.

You wring your hands thrice, feeling the indents of scars beneath your skin, they ground you, reminds you of your humanity in front of a man seemingly so devoid in anthropomorphism.

You clear your throat and start again, ignoring him entirely.

“You took me off the mission with the White Reaper.” You say, raising your head in indignation, “Why?”

And Dazai is sighing, he expected this, yet he is bothered by the accusation resting in your tongue.

“I’m the Boss of the Mafia, it’s not your place to question my actions.”

You shake your head, “No, you misunderstand me Sir…I’m questioning your change in actions.”

“You shouldn’t be questioning at all.”

His voice is dull with deflection yet devoid of defence.

You scowl.

“I’m perfectly capable in dealing with the agency.” You start, stepping forward, “My results prove as much, there is no reason for you to-”

Dazai raises his hand to silence you, and you fall short in your speech.

The conversation is a standstill.

It reminds him of every other time you had had this same conversation with him, this same issue.

You come into his office, your pretty face darkened with curiosity, brazen and confrontational.

He would find it endearing if he didn’t have to focus on his goal.

He doesn’t yearn for your company, in the same way as you do not yearn for his, yet, Dazai’s comically cynical adoration for what he cannot have, seems to always leave him lost.

Lost in your repeated silent battle of confrontation, in which your gun is your glare and his, his position.

And Dazai decides then and there, that whatever…this relationship was, he needed to lose it before it evades him and leaves him disjointed.

You hate how you tremble, and you hate it even more when he smiles at you from his cluttered desk.

Teeth bared, features stretched.

He’d be ugly if you hadn’t grown so use to his indicatives. If you hadn’t lost yourself in your pathetic persistence for empathy.

God, how you wished you could hate him.

“I’m not interested in your previous results.”

“Then what else do I have to-”

“I am interested in your reluctance to obey.”

You pause, your head cocking to the side like a mutt.

“I’m sorry?”

Dazai places his hands in-front of him, indicating that you are now being questioned, not him.

You’re trapped within his gaze.

“In every judgement I make, you are a constant…resistance.” He begins, still regarding you with that grotesque grin. “Why?”

You blink, your eyelids are a lot heavier when under investigation.

“I-”

“I am the boss, you are my subject.” He continues, cutting you off sharply, “Yet you protest every role I place you in, and attempt to disrupt the narrative I have planned for the Mafia.”

Your mouth parts, and you lose yourself in staring at him. His eyes narrow, the smile slowly melting off of his face into something more grim, even sinister.

You looked into his eyes, he couldn't look at you. Or perhaps, he looked right through you.

You couldn't tell.

His eyes were empty. He barely breathed. He was like a catatonic painting of a former human being, and a sadness, a paralysing, overbearing sadness seemed to flow through him like a river that had frozen up and died, killing all the life in it conclusively.

“Forgive me, Sir.” You whisper, your voice trailing off. “I didn’t realise I came across so strongly.”

You step towards him, your lip between your teeth.

“I took you off the mission, because you are not needed in this task.” Dazai replies, looking at you through his eyelashes as his head drops to look at the papers before him.

There’s a small crack in the curtains, allowing the sun to sneak into his office, its beam trails up his face and rests in his eyes. The honey in his eyes appears to reject the intrusion, and they appear more dead when illuminated.

You find it odd how he describes every mission as if they all are acts; leading to a grand finale, as if everything is meticulously planned to the end.

You wonder what the end even is.

Your hands shake.

“Is there…” You hesitate, “A bigger picture?”

Dazai’s head snaps to you and you freeze, hands raising as if begging for mercy for a crime you didn’t know you committed.

“I mean- A reason why you’re so exact with your mission plans.” You rush to finish, eyes wide.

Dazai just looks at you, his face flushed, eyebrows raised slightly.

He looks like a boy you think.

A tired, unenthused child, determined to get his way.

He’s hesitant, for the first time since he became Boss.

You step forward again, closing in on his desk.

Dazai doesn’t move, his eyes stuck on staring into yours, you almost miss his periodic blink.

“What are you suggesting?” He chooses to say, a guttural need to be understood overpowering his desire to be cunning.

You say nothing, reaching out.

He's statuesque to the touch. Cold.

You trace the curve of his face, trying to carve your way to the core, digging your nail into the plush of of his cheek to get him to feel something, to respond to anything.

You breathe in tandem to his silent gasps for air, smothered with the consequence of letting you see him so frail.

The inexpressive expression of himself taunts you. He knows too much, you wonder if that’s the sacrifice of being an agency leader: Giving up everything for a cause that becomes you, drinking the currency of blood that bathes the foundations of the mafia.

His scarf ends seem to bleed lose threads, and yet he doesn’t care to fix it, to replace it.

It’s not important what one should wear when ones’ intention is to die.

His hand grabs yours and you still, momentarily forgetting your place.

“Who are you?” He whispers, and you almost miss it.

His voice is lost in the space between the pair of you, it creates a wall of understanding which builds itself upon the uncertainty of your place.

The pair of you appear to still.

An amalgamation of typographical stratagems bundled together to create one sullied page, in which the boy finally lets someone read the misery carved deeply within blacks of his eyes.

“What is going on Sir?” You plead, desperate to understand, to fathom him and the entire working of the Mafia.

You hate not knowing what your purpose is, and so you rely on him to tell you, to trust you.

Your figure casts a shadow on his desk, and Dazai’s eye falls onto his desk.

“Odasaku lives.”

It’s as if a switch has been flicked, how he suddenly sits straighter, and smiles.

And God you’re so close you could slap the smile off of his face.

“Miss Y/N.” He says, his voice stronger, powerful.

You straighten, taking a step back, awkwardness flushing your face.

“Sir.” You reply, defeat settling in your gut.

“The Mafia, or more so, how it operates, should not concern you.”

His voice is harsh, tucked under a fierce need for order.

“I order, as your Boss, to not return to my office unless the matter is important.”

“But this-” You start.

“Fail to comply.” He pauses, “And I will have to remove you entirely.”

His voice is so cold, so…

His smile, once so filled with determination, had cracked into something bitter, almost remorseful and you swear you could see regret swarm him.

He gestures to his door, “If that’s everything, please, see yourself out.”

A man who hides his secrets like the skin on his arm, draped in a constant melancholy, a persistent string of deceit hidden within his smile.

You know this like you breathe it.

And so, you do as your told, his door swinging shut behind you.

He said he hates how Akane acts around Aoi, he interrupted their kiss, he looked sad when they were talking at the fireworks party, and there’s other examples that I don’t remember aswell of him seeming salty about things that could signal jealousy.

Item A: teru disliking the way akane is around aoi

i’m seeing a reoccurring pattern of teru showing a disliking for akanes crush on aoi.

Now this is really interesting, because why tf would he dislike how he likes her?? Outside of a shippers perspective its pretty confusing right? Maybe because we have to look at it through a shippers perspective. what other logical explanation is there for why he dislikes it other than “wishing downfall on their relationship because he hates fun and love” than him quite possibly liking one of them? And by one of them, i mean akane.

he not only knows akane more, but seems to be quite comfortable with him. Akane being teru’s only actual friend, if he can even call him that. We’ve seen panels of teru pictured with other kids in frame, yet alone himself

Showing he’s never really had friends. Yes he’s had people he talks to, but no actual friend friends. But then, akane came along. he’s the only thing aside from school/exorcism he has going on, leading to him constantly being on his mind, so much so to the point of him literally talking ab him to his siblings when it seems clear no one asked and he’s talking from his mind

Back to teru’s crush, teru doesnt even know aoi. I mean he knows her, but doesnt know know her. On the other hand, he knows and likes akane alot so teru liking akane would make more sense than him liking aoi.

Item B: teru disliking when aoi + akane are together w/o him

he was eavesdropping in on their ‘moment’ here, but as soon as akane was ab to kiss aoi thats kinda where teru drew the line and interrupted.

Playing it off as him simply running into them.

later after saving aoi, when akane and her were back together again, teru was moping ab it being seemingly jealous.

he was SO jealous that just seeing them hold hands like that gave him the motivation to get up and walk down there (motivation he hasn’t had for at least a few days)

Him also asking aoi if she wanted to hangout at the festival with him (presumably because he didnt want her and akane to hangout together, but she ended up rejecting the both of them)

we dont have many one on one teru and aoi interactions so i didnt have much to go off of. Pls excuse me if any of this is poorly written, or if i Interpreted anything wrong 😭

every one tries to uwu-ify zhongli, and i hate it. this man is an archon, one of the oldest. someone who was a warrior. yes, he’s an extinguished gentleman. curtuous, even. i, however, don’t for one second think he’s always like this.

- firm believer that zhongli has to hold himself back, and is quick to anger and frustration, pre current day liyue at least.

- if anyone questioned him, his commands, his leadership, he’d give them a simple look. jaw sat tight, with an expression so unreadable that it would send a chill down their spine, and that alone was enough to silence them.

- in his story quest (i don’t remember if it was his story quest, or an archon quest it was so long ago), he gets aggressive with the fatui when he started to argue. multiple times, he had that look, and stated that “you will suffer the wrath of the rock… you may find it rather unpleasant.” zhongli does not fuck around.

- an aggressive hater of celestia, and the heavenly principals. there were several times post archon war, that he thought about simply handling the issue at hand himself. believed he could, but would be talked down by the other archons, and adepti.

- then the time came where his hand was forced into a contract with the principals. since then, his anger has subsided at least on the external front. every day, he tries to find a way out of that contract without breaking his own morals, and his own meaning as the god of contacts himself.

- now listen. zhongli stepped down from being an archon, but that does not mean he is no longer a god. the gnosis does not equal godhood. while i believe that he did step down because liyue was entering a godless era, i believe he did it for his own selfish reasons as well. zhongli is known for his intelligence, and he knows that war is coming. in one of ei’s voice lines, she states that she believes his story is far from over. i believe that to be true, he has his own plots, and i think he intends to assist the tsaritsa in taking down the heavenly principals. whether it be directly, or indirectly. he’s up to something. he knows far more than he states. his power has not dwindled one bit.

- zhongli hates the idea of erosion, despite talking about it so casually. i think that it terrifies him. that the thought that one day, all of his memories could fade, and that he’d no longer remember. because of that. due to this, the adepti have began to keep journals, or other forms of keeping track of his retellings. each of them have their own version, so that if one day, rex lapis does not remember his own stories, they will be able to remind him bit by bit.

- oh this man has got a past. the orphanage was not pleasant to him. not in the slightest. wrio blames himself for not noticing sooner. not seeing that some children left, and didn’t return. once he began piecing things together, he knew what he was going to do. he couldn’t allow these things to happen, even though he himself was also a child.

- when it came time for him to kill the parents of the orphanage, he didn’t even hesitate. it happened so quickly. it was brutal, messy. a child can’t carry out something clean, and effortlessly. after releasing the other children, he turned himself in.

- wriothesley has ptsd from this, and reoccurring nightmares. not from the murder, but from the children he couldn’t protect sooner. due to that, his sleeping patterns are not good, and borderline unhealthy. instead, he busies himself with work, and fights in the pankration ring.

- now, when wrio got sentenced to the fortress, it was unpleasant for a child. at first. i think rather quickly, he gained the trust of other inmates. inner circles. it taught him quickly about survival. about calculation, gave him cunning traits, and taught him how to deal his cards just right.

- once his sentence was done, he stayed and became the warden. he wanted to change the fortress. i like to think that the warden before him wasn’t a good person, and that the conditions of the underwater prison weren’t great. once he took over, he changed it all. he likes to view it as more of a rehabilitation center, than a prison.

- the scars on wrios neck are definitely from the orphanage, and i refuse to believe otherwise. perhaps something that happened when he first found out what was happening. he confronted the parents, and ended up with those scars from something terrible. it damaged his vocal cords quite a bit (going off that one hc i saw on tiktok awhile ago that i don’t remember where it came from). the scars cause him quite the bit of discomfort sometimes, it’s a mild irritation. that’s why sigewinne tries to give him those gross health shakes to drink. its a remedy for the soreness.

- during his story quest, the traveler asked if he uses the iron fists in his fight in the pankration ring. he said not always, but sometimes you’ve gotta do what you gotta do right? that man is NOT above playing dirty. he’s an undefeated champion in that ring, and when anyone hears they’re facing him, they’re terrified.

- ^ HOWEVER. he’s decent enough to take those he defeats to the head nurse, get them treatment, and ensure they’re doing fine afterwards. in his trailer, we see him giving them handshakes, nods of acknowledgment. he doesn’t fight to be an asshole, it’s to keep the respect, and well- also a distraction for himself.

- now, if i see one more person say that wriothesley is the type to listen to hardcore rock music, i’ll scream. when we are in his office, he put on music that was similar to that of jazz. wrio is a jazz man, classics, instrumentals. it’s calming to him. firm believer that this man would listen to something like sway by michael bublé religiously.

- even though i believe that wriothesley has it in him to be a gentle man, a gentle lover, i can still acknowledge other aspects about him. he’s a flirt. have you seen how confident that man is? he’s shameless. he knows he’s attractive, and he knows how to sway someone so effortlessly. sinful french falls from his lips like it’s second nature, with such a gentle touch that it could have anyone in the palm of his hand and he knows it.

- he’s so busy with the work of the fortress though, that he doesn’t believe he has time for anything that’s actual romance. i’m not saying that he sleeps around (don’t give this man the gojo treatment guys), he simply flirts and sometimes he doesn’t even know he’s doing it. due to his schedule of business in the fortress, if he did end up developing feelings for someone, i believe it would be someone who either frequents the fortress for work, works there directly, or someone who just as much as of a work ethic as him. he needs someone who understands how hectic it is, so that he doesn’t feel neglectful for not being able to supply his full attention to a partner.

- okay my last one for wrio may be a stretch. i’m not 100% sure of the past of the fortress of meropede, so i can’t say if its symbol has always been the three headed dog of cerberus. however, i like to hc that it only became that after wriothesley became the duke. the symbol of cerberus means the past, the present, and the future. wrios past in the orphanage/the way the fortress operated before him, the present day of his control of things, and the future that he sees for the prison and its inmates. cerberus is the gate keeper, a symbol of loyalty, devotion, tenacity, and protection despite being perceived as a terrifying figure to others. i believe that’s how wrio see’s himself.

- in the pilot episode, everyone believed that he wasn’t a good person, that he abandoned charlie, that he was rough, that he didn’t care about the sinners, and only wanted control.

let me tell you why, to an extent, that’s still true.

- lucifer tried to convince charlie that the sinners were awful, terrible people. he did not want her involved, and tried to deter her away from the path of redemption for hells inhabitants. he firmly believed that. i think he still believes that, but, he was slightly swayed by charlie’s words and beliefs. after lilith left him, he became secluded. lucifer wasn’t present as a father. right now, he’s trying to reconcile that, and support her despite not believing in her views himself.

- now, i think that part of the reason why lilith left him was due to his views. with how charlie talks about her, she had similar views as her once upon a time. lilith didn’t like that lucifer viewed the sinners as disposable. it angered her, so she left and that hurt him beyond compare.

- how could anyone expect lucifer to have full faith in redemption for the sinners, believe they were worthy of anything? lucifer is the original sin, they exist because of him. how could he face them, have any love in them, when it only reminded him of his failures as an angel, it reminded him of his pain, his tarnishment of his once devine place? he is pride, of course he can’t face them.

- i also read somewhere once in biblical lore, that without sinners, the seven deadly sins powers would dwindle. if people did not have pride, if they weren’t ridden in that sin, lucifer could lose a portion of his power overtime, be weakened. i personally like this, because that’s a solid reason why he wouldn’t want anyone to be redeemed.

- lucifer was abandoned, tossed aside by his father, by his brothers, for what? having a different opinion, wanting to offer different views. in result, it created darkness, pain, it created hell. lucifer is the cause of it. he carries heavy burdens, guilt, eons of trauma. for a millennia, the only thing he has seen is the pain, and the darkness of others in people he tried to defend.

- i need to see his rage, i need to his anger, his darkness, and inside his mind. i know it’s there, and its aching to be released. give me the fight between him and heaven. lucifer is one of the strongest beings in creation, show me his power.

- additionally, the song had a line that says: “and he cries out to god, how could you claim them all when i know that they’re all mine?” this goes hand and hand with my view of lucifer not wanting to redeem sinners for the sake of his power. additionally, imagine how hurt and pissed off he would be when the first sinners get redeemed. how could god, how could heaven accept those redeemed back into the heavenly gates so willingly, but have turned their backs on him with a second of hesitation or his own chance of redemption?

Can you talk a little more about how you view gender roles in the vampire chronicles vs amc iwtv bc I feel like sth is missing from amc compared to tvc that i can't place

I would love to !! (Explodes) I have so many tvc gender thoughts. So so many. 

I believe the major disconnect between the show vs the books and gender is the place and perspective the writer’s are coming from. Something I really love about Anne Rice’s writing (and really hate sometimes lol) is that she didn’t think about themes or implications at all when she wrote. She just purged her story onto the page and themes and patterns just end up there. This means that every bit of consistency and meaning in tvc comes from something Anne Rice had fixed into her subconscious that she without realizing is putting into her work. So when it comes to gender, in tvc it’s all personal feelings of Anne rice’s. This differs in the show that obviously has a team of writers who put a lot of thought in about public reception and meaning and all. So these perspectives color how gender (and everything basically) is presented.

Anne Rice had some complicated feelings about gender. I’m not going to go too deep into that bcus that’s not what I want this post to be about, but in summarization she had a combination of problematic biases and internalizations that came from a Catholic upbringing in the 40s-50s and some apparent gender dysphoria or at least disconnect with womanhood and gender/gender roles in general. She’s spoken about not understanding gender or feeling like a woman. This comes off very strongly in how she presents her vampires as androgynous, almost genderless beings. It’s a reoccurring theme in tvc that vampirism takes away the burdens of gendered expectations and gives vampires the freedom of self expression and androgyny. It makes sense why a concept like this would speak to a trans person like me, so it’s a big part of why I prefer the book’s handling of gender. Of course Anne Rice also has problematic gender biases, so her presentation of being an androgynous being free of gender roles is flawed, since gender roles are very ingrained in her mindset, which adds to my dissatisfaction with the show’s handling, which could’ve been so good if they took what Anne Rice tried to do and enhanced it.

Anyways, when it comes to tvc there’s also Anne Rice’s subconscious projection of her irl struggles onto her characters. A handful of Anne Rice’s insecurities and struggles came from, well, being a woman, and since her characters r so much of the time vessels to vent her problems through, a strange occurrence happens where her vastly male cast is struggling in ways that would be relatable to women and people who face misogyny and/or internalized misogyny. (Cough cough this is especially apparent with Louis and Armand cough cough).All of this wasn’t conscious on Anne Rice’s part, it’s just a natural consequence of how personal her writing was. An outlier to the “cis men experiencing misogyny” phenomenon is Gabrielle, who I could write a whole essay on, one of the few afab characters who also has projected gender problems by Anne Rice syndrome, but since she is afab she just ends up coming off as a gnc/transmasc/ftm person dealing with gender dysphoria. 

Then there’s the show, which disclaimer I like the show a lot, but boy do I have Issues with it. I could be wrong, we only have one season, but it doesn’t seem like the show is attempting to tackle the “vampires are genderless” concept. They definitely do things with androgyny and gender roles, but not in the context of “messing around with/being free of these things is amazing”. Vampirism in iwtv seems to only enforce gender, weirdly enough. Let me explain!

Ok, so what the show seems to be doing with gender roles is using the concept of a “nuclear family” and our expectations of what that entails to assert the dynamic of Louis, Lestat, and Claudia’s familial relationship. Through utilizing tropes and imagery associated with a nuclear family the viewers are easily able to pick up on the subtext and conflicts that the show is presenting us with, bcus we all know the nuclear family. I think comparing the rue royal family to a nuclear family is interesting in concept, but in execution, I’m not a fan. I think if the show went a different route, and had Louis frame the story in a way that compares his life to familiar hetero, mortal family conventions for the sake of being sympathetic and understandable to Daniel and readers, without that being the literal dynamic of the characters, that could’ve been interesting. Also, I like the concept of oppressive systems like gender roles becoming oppressive in different ways for vampires, since “vampirism isn’t freeing it just gives u different problems” is a theme of the show that I rlly like, esp bcus Anne rice was rarely able to decide if vampirism was super fun or tortuous. But that doesn’t seem to be what the show is doing. Lestat, Louis, and Claudia literally just fit into your stereotypical abusive nuclear family tropes. Sometimes things are switched around and subverted, but for the most part it’s pretty consistent. Anne Rice’s personal projections onto the characters is nearly nonexistent, most glaringly for Lestat. I don’t like this, it doesn’t make sense for the characters, and it also simplifies their dynamic and conflict in the book to be much less interesting in my opinion. 

Sometimes the show will show us characters breaking gender expectations, Lestat occasionally or Antoinette cross dressing (speaking of Antoinette I’ll get to her), but none of these moments seem to mean anything adjacent to “vampires are genderless or gender-fluid and this is freeing for them. These moments seem to align more closely with imagery associated with queer coded villains during the Hayes code era. Both Lestat and Antoinette are being particularly grotesque and villainous during their gnc moments, which aligns with the old hollywood vibe that the show seems to be going for, which is mildly cool, but not particularly compelling or relatable to me beyond that. And it definitely doesn’t have the type of resonance that the books do when it comes to gender nonconformity. 

So, I think Antoinette is the prime example of this. Antoine in the books was a young man, 19 years old, who Lestat used in a way that was reminiscent of how a cheating husband would use a mistress. He fooled around sexually with this younger man and also confided to him in ways he didn’t his “husband” (Louis), escaping to him when he was fed up with his family at home to blow off steam and vent his struggles, the way he does with Antoinette in the show. But Antoine himself did not have the stereotypical personality of a “mistress”, he was naive and well intentioned, didn’t realize he was being used and that Louis was being hurt in the process. When Lestat tells him that he needs his help fighting back against his family he’s horrified and confused. Antoinette in the show is not this, she’s very much a “mistress”, and the sex change from book to show makes this even more annoying to me. It just seems like the show writers wanted to make the subtextual coding of Antonine’s character in the books annoyingly unsubtle text, by making Antonine the stereotypical evil and seductive female mistress, which I rlly hate. And also they removed any and all sympathy attached to Antoine’s  character in the process. (Side note ik ppl are gonna come at me with “oh but it’s from Louis’s perspective! That’s why Antoinette is treated that way, he hates her! And to that I say there is no evidence to support that, it hasn’t happened in the show, you made it up. And if it’s true and done well I’ll eat my words, but for now my opinion is based on what is in the show, and it prob won’t change until we get new content.)

There’s more, like how Louis fulfills the traditionally female roles in marriage (cleaning, taking care of the kids, etc) which is kind of gnc, but only so that the show can frame him as more of a stereotypical abuse victim, and not to say anything interesting about how vampirism gives people more opportunities to explore gender fluidity in ways they find freeing. The show uses gender roles to non subtly code the characters in ways that are easily digestible and relatable to a cis audience. That’s my main gripe, gender in AMC’s iwtv is very cis. 

What I love about the books is how fluid gender is with the characters. Lestat is very feminine and very masculine, so is Louis, these traits can co exist without ever contradicting each other. But ig that was too complicated and varied for the show to want to tackle, just like the complex mutual toxicity of loustat’s relationship, which was dumbed down so much also. I feel like the show writers didn’t know what to do with a gay relationship where both men are feminine and masculine and also both men have complex trauma and traits that make their relationship unhealthy + a hot mess, and instead just reframed loustat to be traditional abusive relationship we’ve seen a billon times in media.

In conclusion, the show could very well change my mind and portray gender/gender roles in a way that I enjoy, but for now I’m unsatisfied. I want to be wrong ultimately. If you like how gender is handled in the show feel free to disagree, but plz don’t come at me with anger. I’m happy to have a discussion, I’m very interested in this topic, but I don’t want to humor you if you’re rude. As someone who has been catching up on comics. I noticed a pattern with Nightwing. Every time the author changes the supporting cast gets dumped. We had the run offs and greyer Blockbuster. They don’t exist by the Ric arc even though they could be people to step up in Nightwing’s absence or grab power. Ric arc had a cast of cops and friends and Bea. Never heard from the cops again despite them being potential informants. The difference with Tom Taylor is that he’s the only one who uses old characters but he mutates them. Not sure if that’s worse but I hate the cast dumping. I fully expect never to see Bea, and the sister again. If the Sister stays someone will kills her off. Huh Taylor had a small supporting cast compared to others.

Yeah that's been a reoccurring problem with Nightwing and is one of the complaints fans have about it.

So yeah it would suck to see Bea just disappear after this, but at the same time, I don't know if I vibe with her sticking around as a pirate queen.

Melinda on the other hand, she can go. TT literally just set her up as the mayor as a way to make it easy for Dick to take down the baddies of the city. That's her purpose. Just easy gateway/easy access to certain information and such. TT hasn't bothered doing anything else with her, really. The sibling thing was just to give Dick an easy way to befriend the mayor. That's it.

But yeah, it'll be interesting to see which cast members the next writer pulls. Or who knows, maybe they'll rely more heavily on the Titans.

I hate it when the way people draw characters isn't distinct.

Only one or two (or three if you're lucky) bodytypes they continuesly use throughout their designs

The same hairstyles (especially bangs)

No distinct character elements or clothing pieces

And ships that look like copy pastes of one another

When they draw an art piece that's uncoloured and don't put the character tags, and I genuinely can not tell who they just drew.

If you struggle with this, my recommendation is doing more with the hair and the siluettes of characters. Aswell as the faces, think about how the eyes are tilted and their shape. Look into different nose shapes.

And maybe add some reoccurring symbols and patterns. Like giving all of Kiki's fits a heart motive (this wouldn't work if you give others the same motive).

Tattoos can also help, if you give Gene a shark tattoo. He'll be easily recognisable by it

And bodytypes ofcourse, hourglass isn't the only female body shape. You have pear and apple builds for example.

Ofcourse you don't have to do this, I am but one person. Not a form of authority. But something to consider.

The double standard strikes again

It seems like no one here (and globally honestly) bats an eye when Israeli civilians are being constantly attacked. The reasoning is often that since we’re Israeli, we immediately all deserve whatever is coming our way… I was literally told that on multiple occasions.

But god forbid when we strike back- everyone’s outraged! We’re all evil genocidal murderers!

I'm not completely surprised by Anti- Zionists' ignorance, considering the way Western news outlets cover terror attacks in Israel:

Lack of news reporting and innapropriate coverage

It is important to also note that most attacks on Israeli civilians aren't even reported in western media and news.

Oftentimes, when rocket sirens or terror attacks are reported, the wording chosen for the headling is very misleading and donwplays what happened. *This is usually done by British news outlets such as the BBC or Sky News.

It's never a terror attack / shooting / stabbing- it's a strike

It's never X civilians murdered in a terror attack for being Israeli - it's X were killed.

Here's one example:

Can you guess what happened here? Did the Israeli forces just shoot a random Palestinian in a bar? .... No.

Between March-May of 2022, there was yet another wave of terror attacks all across Israel: shootings, stabbings, car-ramming, and running over you name it. Overall, 21 were murdered and 97 were injured. These headlines describe a shooting attack in a Tel Aviv bar, where 2 were killed and 14 were injured. In a time when there was a terror attack every few days.

I've watched nearly all the Itazura Na Kiss adaptations, and I have a reoccurring theme where I keep on coming back to re-watch it yearly (specifically the 2005 Taiwanese version and the 2013 Japanese version).

The point is, I have no clue why I like it.

A cold, unfriendly, unlikable genius? Not my style. Innocent but dumb female lead? Not my style. A guy showing affection by bullying the girl he likes? Definitely not my thing.

Do you see a pattern here?

I logically understand why there are people that dislike, heck, hate this series, and logically speaking, I should too, but this is not the case. Thus, I am here on a mission to try and uncover why I like this series so much, however long that may take.

Been having lots of fun with LoZ again since TOTK came out and I keep thinking abt good guy ganon AU, and I ended up thinking so hard about it that I accidentally formed a. questionable crack theory about the divide between Ganon and Demise

so naturally I'm about to make it everyone's problem. lets go

Ok, so Ganondorf has been fully human in more than one of the games. Evil, yes, and possessing dark magic plenty of times, but undoubtedly still a man. Meanwhile, the fully fledged Demon King/Calamity is clearly Demise. The difference between these two is very stark.  

What if they're actually not the same person? What if Ganondorf and Demise didn't originally share the same spirit?

Demise is not mortal. His exact words were that "his hatred would follow them forever". If we took that a bit more literally, we could interpret that as the lingering Malice and dark magic Ganondorf utilizes in the series instead of Demise himself reincarnating alongside Link and Zelda.

If Demise and Ganondorf aren’t the same person, then where the hell did Ganon come from? Why does he reincarnate?  

Idea: Demise didn’t just curse the hero and the goddess, he cursed everyone there who had a hand in his downfall.

Now this is just an idea, but let me elaborate.

There are 4 major reoccurring characters in the Legend of Zelda series. Yes, 4, you read that right. Those characters are Link, Zelda, Ganondorf, and Impa. Impa appears less than the other three, but she holds enough weight in the story and has appeared often enough (around 7 times?) that I will be counting her, especially for the sake of this argument.

Anyway

Back to the curse thing

Excluding Demise and Ghirahim, there were 4 people present at the final battle with Demise in Skyward Sword: Link, Zelda, Impa, and Groose.  

The first three are reoccurring characters, but how does Groose factor in?

Well, if we assume Demise is dead with only his Malice left behind, and that Ganondorf's spirit didn't come from Demise…  

You see where I'm going with this.

(Yes I will admit this is a stretch because ganon is a serious character and groose is… groose. But LOZ still takes itself 100% seriously despite how ridiculous some parts of it is, and I'm having fun with this crack theory so consider: I do what I want)  

“But ganon is evil! And they’re so different!” yes. I’m getting to that

What are Groose's most prominent character traits? Tall, muscly, red hair, very mean-spirited and selfish (at least before he pulls himself together and helps Link, who he originally hated due to his crush on Zelda). He isn’t very smart, and he isn’t all that brave compared to Link, he’s mostly driven by his personal desires (for better and for worse), and usually resorts to brute force to achieve his goals.  

If you've noticed a pattern, you would be correct: these character traits all align closely to the holder of the triforce of power.

There's also that one crack theory already floating around that the Gerudo are distantly related to Groose because of his dumbass red hair and that Demise keeps reincarnating as a Gerudo because of the fact that Groose catapulted bombs at his face, so y'know. There's also that

The spirit of Ganondorf actually came from Groose, and the Demon King/Calamity came from Demise

Obviously I don’t ACTUALLY believe this theory but yknow. what if lmao
