Today I will be reviewing the Let's Talk in Japanese! podcast by Tomo-sensei. This podcast is aimed at Japanese learners who want more chances to listen to spoken Japanese but using vocabulary and grammar that they can understand. The podcast is for levels N1 (the highest level) to N5 (the lowest level), but I would say that a majority of the content is focused on level N3 or N4.

Do I currently listen to this podcast?: Yes, I like this podcast a lot and listen to it frequently.

General Overview

Good For Levels: Beginner | Intermediate | Advanced

In this series, Tomo, a Japanese teacher for foreign students, discusses in Japanese only a variety of topics either selected by him or suggested by the audience. These can range from topics about daily life to JLPT related topics. He understandably discusses topics that he has a decent knowledge of, and admits when there are gaps. He is quite faithful to the level of each episode, which he indicates at the end of the episode title, so you can be sure that you will be able to understand the majority of the content or challenge yourself as the case may be.

Length of Episodes ★★★★★

The podcasts are usually around 10-15 minutes long. This is ideal for a quick listen when you are short on time or just want to supplement your studies, but may not be ideal if you are looking for something a bit longer. I usually listen to two or three podcasts in a row during my commute and feel like I've spent my time well. The short length can be useful if you are not interested in a particular topic, because you can make it to the end of the episode without losing interest and a new topic will come up with the next episode.

Level of Engagement ★★★★★

Although this is just one person (Tomo) talking throughout the podcast, he is engaging because he speaks as though he is talking to a small group. I find it engaging because I can, in the privacy of my room or car, reply to him when he poses questions, or make a response if I am surprised by what he says, etc. Even though it's not interactive per se, it can feel interactive because of the way he speaks in his podcast. I find myself engaged in most episodes, and the shorter length means I don't have to work as hard to stay engaged through the entire episode.

Episode Frequency ★★★★★

New podcasts come out about weekly, and sometimes more frequently than that. I have heard that he works very hard to put out the podcasts so frequently, and I think this intense schedule plus the large archive of material means you can listen almost indefinitely to this podcast.

Overall ★★★★★

This podcast is completely in Japanese and designed by a Japanese teacher for foreigners learning Japanese, and has material for everyone from beginners to advanced learners. The shorter episodes mean you can fit it into a busy schedule, and the JLPT labels mean you can pick and choose episodes based on your own level and be confident that you will get what you expect. I highly recommend this for those looking to improve their listening skills.

Top 10 Bls for 2023

So I feel like this is going to be such a long post. First of all I struggled so much choosing what was going to make the top 10 and why. I feel like my opinions are a little different from the majority. For example, I did not incude Only Friends, Moonlight Chicken, Our Sky 2 or Our Dating Sim. It was interesting how my top 5 was easy and after that I was like ahhh what do I do?! So here is what occurred. Thank you bestie @gunsatthaphan as always for making the gifs. They are GORGEOUS and add so much to my words. Without further ado,

I have been anticipating this show since it was first announced in 2022. Let me just say, I LOVE JimmySea. I love their acting and chemistry. I also love these characters Day and Mohk. Jimmy and Sea are both doing a fantastic job at portraying them. This might be my favorite show of all time and I don't know how that is, but after each episode I just love it more and more. P'Aof always does such a good job directing each scene. I love his vision especially in this series. If you know me at all you know A Tale of A Thousand Stars has been my absolute favorite show for years now. Nothing has surpassed it. I think Last Twilight might do that. I had to give it to the top for these reasons alone. It's kind of funny that JimmySea are the top spot 2 years in a row. They just do something for me.

My precious little Korean BL. I was obsessed with this show. I think I watched it 3 times. This one just proves I prefer story over nc lol. This show had so much story which I enjoyed and the mains were so cute as Ji Won Young slowly found himself falling for Yoon Tae Joon. The second couple were also pretty fun and added to the show. This is why it is number 2. Go watch it if you enjoy story with a happy ending. I could probably watch this one 5 more times. The way it was acted was also fun it really kept me invested. So much character development. Okay I will stop now.

Did we think this would be this high on the list? I don't know. What I do know is watching this week to week was so fun and I still listen to a majority of the songs on spotify. This was high school, but also was so fun. Tinn was such a simp for Gun. FourthGemini did very well. As we can tell by the gif I ended up loving WinnySatang as SoundWin in this. They were just adorable! The umbrella scene, the singing scene, the scooter scene. They had so many. Also the fact this show did a music video for one of my favorite Thai songs was just...gah! I need to rewatch this one soon. I miss it.

Ah! my precious show that I waited forever and a decade to air. When the first trailer came out I was like YES. I am one of the few that have no qualms with Krist and then when it switched from Mike to Gawin I was like HUH?! It ended up working somehow. GawinKrist did very well and had pretty damn good chemistry. This story was so fun. The time traveling and the different stories. I loved watching Kawi become himself. Piasang never waivered and that was adorable. Aye as Pear was also so nice to see. All of the characters in this show were done so well. It had to get the number 4 spot. Unable was one of my most played song this fall most likely lol I love Gawin's voice.

I was surprised by how much I loved this show. It was so cute and done so well. It was one of the best surprises of the summer. There was so much story and characterization. It had such a good plot. I just loved them the whole way through. I don't usually like friends to lovers it depends how it is done and this was done perfectly. Love my little Bo Ram and Han Tae. Go watch this if you haven't. Cuties being cute.

ForceBook always take me over. I don't know why, but I just love them. GunCher were so cute and adorable and healthy. I throroughly enjoyed this show. They had to be in my top 10. Also we can't forget how adorable and sweet the second couple were. Koala hugs for the win okay?

PondPhuwin as Palm and Nungdiao. What a great show. I loved every second of this. All of the drama and excitement. All of the references to the Chinese story. I just really liked this one and I love PondPhuwin. Also the little snippet we got of PerthChimon. This was a good show. I don't care what the majority of you say. The ending scene with needing a charger is the cutest thing ever.

I don't know what it is about this show. I don't know why I love HiraKiyoyi so much. They are so strange and yet these two actors just captivate the characters and I can't stop watching. This scene is so funny because we have never seen Kiyoyi really get jealous of Hira. That is why my dumbass couple who can't communicate if their lives depended on it are in the number 8 spot.

I honestly have no idea if anyone else enjoyed this one as much as I did, but I really loved them. They were so cute. I am a sucker for we met before and cuteness. Lee Jun and Ha Ram were just cute. Ha Ram softened Lee Jun from his previous relationship. Also their chemistry was pretty dang good.

I really struggled in placing this in my top 10 for a multitude of reasons. The main one being the second couple took over the show and we got a rushed ending for the mains. That kind of irked me a lot. I just had to include it though because of one man BAI ZONG YI. He was the CUTEST character to ever exist. He never ever waivered. Him and Piaseng should compare notes LOL Anyway my babies are rounding out the tenth spot. I didn't dislike Ai Di and Chen Yi, but I was upset by how they took over. Both couples had chemistry chemistrying 🧪 which was nice.

So with this list I had to exclude a lot of shows that I did enjoy. I am going to list them here.

It pained me not to include Our Skyy 2 because I loved all of the couples but some of the episodes were just so cringe lol or bad. My precious PhuphaTian getting their happy ending was probably one of the best things though. That scene still brings me to 😭 . The episodes of Our Skyy 2 that were good were Never Let Me Go, A Boss and a Babe, 1000 Stars and it pains me to say this, but the Bad Buddy one was not that bad because it included 1000 Stars. Also Vice Versa's was weird, but it was enjoyable.

Minato Shouji Coin Laundry 2 didn't make the cut and that hurt so much because I think Minato and Shin are a comfort couple for me and they were adorable this season. It was just the plot. I don't want to spoil this if you haven't seen it, but yeah. I still love them though so they are getting mentioned.😍

Love Tractor was such a cute show and the character of Ye Chan was just so puppy coded and adorable. 🐶

Moonlight Chicken was a show I was so difficult about. I don't know why, but I did not enjoy it as much as I wanted to so it was not included. EarthMix still have my heart 🧡 and FourthGemini stole the show.

Only Friends was a show that everyone was waiting all year for. I think they did a very good job, It was entertaining and Mew is probably my favorite character of the year aside from Mohk of course lol I just couldn't include it in my top. I'm sorry :(

I am actually surprised that there were so many Korean shows on the list this year. They really showed up. If you read the whole thing. Thank you. This took me hours to think about and put together.

You resurface with a nervous energy humming in your bones. You are lying on your side, facing the curtain shrouded window. Thick crusts of sleepy dust have accumulated along your lower lash lines and in the corners of your eyes. You rub them away carefully with an index finger.

A siren wails outside. Your stomach rumbles loudly. Rhythmic ticks emanate from the wristwatch that sits on your bedside table.

There is no doubt that you are awake now.

You exhale shakily, successfully dispelling a single ounce of tension. You immediately feel less anxious, and your following inhales and exhales provide further relief.

That was some dream.

You begin to piece the sections together. Night terror into hallucination, into dream... into whatever the heck that was at the end.

It was a complex beast, but so was your life right now. You were now up to 8 days in a row of these parasomnia episodes. It was getting silly now, you knew this, and you were tired beyond measure, yet you were completely unable to get sustained rest without some kind of subconscious interruption. 

And with your emotions in constant overdrive and showing no signs of letting up, you were certain that they were going to continue for a little bit longer. 

A frustrated huff of air escapes your lips; you know your swirling mind will stop you from getting back to sleep for a while now.

Your thoughts drift back to your mind-conjured images of the beautiful Dream Man with the ethereal voice. He was a whole other breed of night terror. 

You wonder if perhaps you are losing your grip on reality and if a visit to the GP was in order. It was a task for tomorrow though, as there was no way you could make contact in the middle of the night.

You roll onto your back and realise that your lamp is on. You guess you must have fallen asleep again before getting a chance to switch it off after the hallucination part of your night.

You turn another 90 degrees, further towards the warm glow that pervades the space around you. By this point, the energy saving bulb has heated up enough, not only to successfully cast light across your whole mattress but also illuminate the face of the 'Dream Man' who is sitting on the chair across the room.

"Oh fuck!" You exclaim, recoiling away from him.

Your heart rate picks up like a sprinter off the starting blocks.

The man holds his hands up, palms facing you in a show of peace.

His voice rumbles with the same rainstorm-like quality as it did before.

"I will not hurt you. You have my word."  

You're not listening to him in the slightest though. Your chest is pounding painfully and you are worried you may vomit. A stream of consciousness falls from your lips instead.

"You're real. You're fucking real. Fuck! And I'm wearing next to nothing. Fuck!"

You're looking down at your bare legs peeking out from the tousled covers and hastily rearrange them to regain some dignity.

You look back to him and fix him with an accusatory stare.

"You have some serious explaining to do."

"I agree. Where would you like to begin?"

Your eyes drift off to the left as you try and choose.

You know that you should probably start with something like ‘why are you here?’ or ‘how did you get in?’ but all you keep coming back to is the question you utter with trepidation:

“Who are you?”

"In the folklore and legends of your world, I am known as The Sandman, The Oneiromancer. Across the other realms, I go by many names. I am Dream of the Endless, Lord Morpheus, The Shaper of Form, Keeper of the Dreaming, King of Dreams, Ruler of Nightmares and Curator of the collective unconsciousness of the universe."

"Okay, Daenerys Targaryen." You stifle a giggle in response to your joke.

He doesn't react.

"Huh, not into Game of Thrones then? You should look it up. Although I would advise sticking to the books. The series got a bit lost towards the end."

He shifts ever so slightly in the seat, the moss green velvet fabric standing out against his dark clothes. You snap back to the present.

You fidget with the seam of the duvet cover as your cheeks flush with blood. His gaze makes you feel insecure. 

"Sorry. I didn't mean to start babbling like that. I haven't been sleeping well."

“I know. That is precisely why I am here.”

His hands steeple in front of him. He leans forward, blue eyes trained on you intently.

“It has come to my attention that you have become the recipient of a plague of vicious and unrelenting nightmares. I have also seen a drastic change in your sleeping habits, with a concerning decline in the amount of time that you are spending in the Dreaming.”

This was no surprise to you in the slightest.

You had been deferring your bed time to a later and later point in the hope that you could tire yourself out enough to bypass the nightmares and night terrors. But they would always be there within an hour of your head hitting the pillow and would prevent you from getting no more than two hours of sleep at a time.

The Dream Man rises slowly and fluidly from the chair. His expression is tinged with something you cannot interpret.

“I've been observing you for a number of nights now to try and ascertain the cause of your plight. The very idea that this is happening to you as a result of a defect or weakness in the fabric of my realm truly disturbs me. As of yet, I have been unable to pinpoint the exact reason, however I will do everything in my power to ensure my success.”

He’s close to you now, his glacial scent drifts over you like mist rolling off a waterfall. 

“To be unable to sleep is to suffer. I only have to look at you to see that you are suffering and I cannot allow it to continue.”

You know all too well what he is seeing. Your bruised and swollen under-eyes have been the focus of many of the people you have come into recent contact with.

“I don’t know what to say,” you finally speak in a whisper.

“You do not need to say anything, for now you must sleep.”

He turns off your lamp and takes a single step backwards.

“Wait,” you call to him. “I don’t think I can sleep knowing what I now know.”

“You need not worry. I have already selected a dream for you. All you have to do is let it take you.”

“But-.”

“Lie down. Close your eyes.”

You visibly hesitate.

“Do as I say, Y/N.”

You reluctantly recline on your side but do not fulfill his second request.

You gaze at him with glassy, tired eyes.

"I'm afraid."

"They will not come for you, I promise. I will watch over you until morning."

You can't help but believe him.

You re-arrange your pillows and curl into a foetal position.

The Dream Man takes this as a sign that you are ready to sleep, and begins to walk away.

He is wrong.

In your tired delirium, you begin to converse chaotically to his retreating figure.

"You know, I still don’t know what to call you. You said so many names but didn’t tell me which one I was allowed to use."

He turns his head to look back at you.

His reply is a soft intonation that causes shivers to run through your entire body.

“You may call me Morpheus."

It's only been a day since Seventeen landed in Korea from Singapore for a leg of the Be The Sun Tour, and without unpacking their bags, they were ready to film the second season of In The Soop. They felt the stress and consequently also the pressure of not being able to deliver entertaining content but once they boarded the bus in the direction of their residence, their eyes closed on their own without giving too much thought to what to do or say, but only to total relaxation.

2:00 pm

«Hyejin-ah, wake up, we're here we have to get off» - Jeonghan's soft voice shook her from her dream. All along the journey she had managed to sleep, and she wasn't the only one: Jun, Minghao, Mingyu and Joshua had also fallen asleep on the way.

When she looked up, she noticed a breathtaking landscape outside; lots of trees and clean water reflecting the sunlight. It was a really healing atmosphere.

«I'll take that» - Minghao took the bag from her hands to hold it, and she thanked him with a smile. «Wow! Looks like we're the only ones here»

[ We did all of this for you Seventeen! ]

«Where should we go first? Shall we look at the rooms?» - Seungcheol took a stance gathering everyone beside him and all 13 nodded, following him to the entrance of the sleeping area. «Daisy, this room only has one bed, you can take it!» - Seungcheol saw the first room and immediately thought of the only girl in the group, who was still too tired and gave a thumbs up in response.

Half an hour later they were all already doing something else: Seungkwan and Minghao taking pictures of the sky; Woozi, Joshua, Hoshi and Dino in the gym and the rest in the dining room waiting for the chef par excellence to cook something.

«Mingyu, are you making fried dumplings?» - Vernon asked him setting plates and chopsticks on the table, «Alright, anything else?» - Without complaining Mingyu was already in the kitchen catering to the members' needs. «Whatever you want! I could eat the table too» - Daisy licked the tip of her chopsticks feeling her belly growl.

«I brought some sauce too» - Junhui entered the kitchen with something he had already prepared, and memories of when he brought the hot pots in the first season came back to everyone's mind. «Where are the others?»- «I know they're at the gym, Woozi wants to get paid as a personal trainer»- Dokyeom laughed but it was all true. «I'd rather dance Hit 10 times in a row than have a gym session with Woozi» - Seungcheol replied imagining the effort the others were making. «Oh and Jeonghan is having Japanese lessons» - he continued «Huh??? I thought I was your favourite Japanese teacher, I feel betrayed» - Daisy spoke «To me you always will be, aishiteru» - Dokyeom sent her a heart with his fingers making her giggle.

5:00 pm

«Who wants to go to the lake with me?» - Minghao asked once they finished eating and cleaning the table. «Me!» - Seungkwan and Daisy raised their hands at the same time and a few minutes later they were sitting by the lake playing with rocks, precisely creating a tower with them.

In the back, Seungcheol and Mingyu could be heard arguing over who scared away the fish they had caught.

«The sky is so beautiful» - Seungkwan couldn't stop taking pictures «So are you Kwanie» - Daisy complimented him knowing how much she enjoyed Seungkwan's embarrassed reaction to such comments «Mhh I don't think so. I think I was trained too much on how others might see me. I wasn't like this when I was young.» - Kwan spoke, not taking his eyes off the sky as Minghao and Daisy listened attentively. « I used to goof off before I was a trainee, then I started to hear a lot of 'you don't look cool enough's”»- Minghao took a long breath «You've been worrying about pictures ever since. Like coming out looking good, being cool and all. You do it to get good reactions from the fans but you shouldn't care so much. Why do you need others' acceptance? Seungkwan-ah, it's OK for you to do what you like, without having to please someone because you feel like it's your duty.» - He finished by going to put an arm behind his shoulder. «Minghao is right, as always» - Daisy added and stood up to hug Seungkwan as well. «We love you.»

Hey!! There's been a lack of Chenford promo/sneak peaks for this ep?! Thoughts/expectations...

listen...tv being this accessible is so wild. it makes me feel soooo old. like, tv has never been this accessible prior to an episode airing in the history of the format. the idea that we see press photos and releases and 10000 sneak peeks and spoilers is just so...bleh. i'm not into that. it can be fun to follow but idc about anyone's speculation but my own, other people's thoughts/expectations stress me out and i honestly very rarely share my own bc they just get me hate mail ✉️

i miss when the only thing i knew about an episode of upcoming tv was what i read in like, tv guide. i realize this is such an old lady take but as a person who loves the art of tv writing, i just feel like all this shit does the story such a disservice. think about the fact that until like, 10 years ago, honestly a little less, we didn't really see hoards of press photos for every single episode. we didn't see a bunch of sneak peeks so we knew what was to come. sure, there were spoilers, but idk - i yearn for tv to be able to operate in that oblivious space again, i hate knowing what's coming for an episode and forming expectations bc i'd rather just...enjoy television. it's honestly sad to me bc all this shit has changed the way tv works, the way it's written, etc.

anyway all of this is to say: there's been a lack of promo/sneak peeks in general for this ep. that's not abnormal, it just feels weird coming off 2 weeks in a row of a season premiere/100th episode level of hype. the chenford element of it is also not weird to me. they're 2/8 main cast members. other people are going to get the sneak peeks sometimes, just gotta roll with it. if you like the show, it shouldn't matter. ngl, i hate seeing chenford in sneak peeks bc then not all of the content is new for me. i'd so much rather be surprised.

i'm sure there will be some chenford content since there are press photos of them together and we know lucy will wind up riding with celina/tim from spoilers when they were shooting this ep. i'm personally hype not to have to go into this ep assuming i know anything. having all these preconceived notions, imo, is not a healthy relationship with tv so i just try to avoid doing it at all.

tl;dr: i have no expectations of this ep, i'm sure i'll like it bc i like most episodes of this show. i don't think it's weird there's been a smaller amount of promo bc we're coming off two major episodes and i enjoy the rookie without solely caring about chenford.

Obviously, this ranking is just MY opinion, and I would love to hear yours! (Also, if I forgot any...sue me!) Anyway....

10. "The Gene and Courtney Show" Season 6, Episode 7

Listen....while I love that he brought her a rose, I cannot handle the second-hand embarrassment I feel when I think about how Tina is wearing a diaper in this scene. Like...I know she's dressed as cupid, but it's all I can focus on!!! If she wasn't wearing one, I think I would rank this kiss higher.

9. "The Bob's Burgers Movie"

I feel like some of you might be shocked that I didn't put the movie kiss higher (I shocked myself with it when I was making this list), but there are just other ones that I like more! I do love the "Woah." "Yeah." afterwards, and I'm pretty sure I cried the first time I saw this scene in theaters lollll

I know that the first one is supposed to be part of Tina's dream, but they look so cute that I wanted to include it. The actual kiss in this scene is made for me by Zeke's "Oh hell yeah!" after and Jimmy Jr.'s dazed reaction. Also, these poor kids that aren't apart of the friend group were probably soooo confused

The way that she SPRINTS down the hall in this scene kills me, and I love Jimmy Jr.'s (and Jocelyn's) reactions after. If this wasn't immediately followed by THE Zekina kiss, it would probably be higher up on my list! (That's what I get for being a multi-shipper, oops)

5. "Gene it On" Season 4, Episode 20

THEY WERE ON A DATE!!!!!! HE LOVES IT WHEN SHE'S MEAN!!!! AHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!

4. "Ex Machtina" Season 7, Episode 8

Obviously, I'm biased...but this is arguably the best Tinimmy episode overall, and this kiss is just...magical??? Idk??? The fire in the back??? The vibes??? Also, I considered adding the scene where Jimmy Jr. kisses the robot while the entire family watches, but I can't watch that scene without physically recoiling, sooooo

3. "The Quirkducers" Season 7, Episode 6

THIS HAD NOOOOO RIGHT TO BE AS STEAMY AS IT IS. WHY DOES IT GO ON FOR SO LONG???? THIS IS LITERALLY THE MOST INTENSE KISS WE SEE FROM THEM AND THEY'RE DRESSED LIKE THAT!!!! I know this diverges from canon but hey, the entire existence of y/n technically diverges from canon so it is what it is.

A meeting to discuss the findings from the basement. A meeting to tell Historia and the heads of the military industrial complex that this slice of the world is, in fact, not all that remains of humanity. 

I obviously knew there were people outside of the walls since I myself wasn’t from their confines, however, even I was taken aback by the sheer amount of information about another country that I knew nothing about.

Just like Historia’s coronation, I had to be dressed appropriately so Hange let me wear one of her spare dress uniforms. 

After Levi and Hange got Eren and Mikasa out of their cells, we all went over to the meeting room together. In the front row, a chair was saved for Erwin out of respect. I noticed one lone seat at the back and took it. Levi gave me a strange look but there was no opportunity to question him about it.

It’s only right for me to sit at the back, I’m not even a real soldier.

The meeting was, all things considered, fairly uneventful. Everyone was stunned of course to find out that there was an entire world outside of this one and moreso that that world wanted us dead, but other than a brief disagreement about next steps that Historia quickly put an end to, there wasn’t much noteworthy that occurred. 

A date is set for the medal ceremony for everyone that fought in the recent battle, and Historia dismisses the meeting by instructing Premier Zachary to have 10 medals prepared.

10? But there’s only 9 soldiers. Are…are they counting me?

Before everyone can leave, I approach Historia. The guy from the previous meeting, Nile, immediately readies his weapon and points it at me. I’m unphased by this, but I seem to be the only one.

Over my shoulder, I hear Levi practically growl, “If you like having fingers to pull that trigger I suggest you lower your weapon.”

Hange slightly speaks over Levi and says “Nile what’s gotten into you?”

“With everything that’s come out I don’t trust that bitch! And then she has the audacity to approach the queen?!” Nile grits out.

I slowly turn towards him and as I move he takes the safety off of his firearm. I jump when Historia’s voice cuts through the tension.

Banging her hand on the table and standing up, she shrieks, “Commander Nile Dock, stand. Down.”

He looks at her dumbfounded, and begins to try to argue but she cuts him off. “Y/n is someone I’ve had the pleasure to work and fight alongside. I trust her as much as I trust any of my advisors. If you have a problem with her continued involvement both as a Scout and as my friend, feel free to dismiss yourself.”

Her massive blue eyes hold ice in them, challenging him to talk back. Defeated, he places the safety back on his weapon and sits down. Turning to me, still clearly aggravated but trying to get over it, Historia calmly says, “What is it, y/n?”

It takes me a moment to gather my thoughts, but when I do I say, “I think you made a mistake. You requested 10 medals and there’s only nine soldiers.”

She looks puzzled. “How do you figure?”

Now I’m confused as I say, “Well, Hange, Levi, Eren, Mikasa, Armin, Connie, Jean, Sasha, and Flock. That’s nine.”

A dazzling smile breaks across her face before she giggles a little bit. “You’re forgetting yourself.”

Now I’m completely stunned. “I…I thought I wouldn’t be eligible for anything like that. I’ve said 100 times that I’m not a soldier, I don’t just mean that when there’s things I don’t wanna do. Are…are you sure it would be fair to give me a medal?”

She continues to smile and pats my shoulder. “From what I’ve heard, you fought just as hard as everyone else. While you might not be a soldier, that doesn’t mean you did any less than your comrades.”

I smile a little, still in disbelief, as I thank her and turn to walk away.

As we all leave the conference room, Jean flicks the back of my head.

“Ow! What the hell was that for?!” I say.

“For being the only person stupid enough to try to get out of getting a royal medal.”

“Oh shut up, Horseface. I was just making sure there wasn’t a mistake.”

Hange laughs a little. “Looks like you’ll be borrowing my uniform for an extra event.” I smile in response and wait for the day to arrive, hiding the entire time just how excited I am.

Between that meeting and the day of the awards ceremony, the news broke to the public. Much to my surprise, when Hange and Levi had to meet with the press, they invited me to the meeting as well.

As the three of us walked through the barracks to the room where we were going to sit and chat, I finally said, “I’m happy to be here, but why exactly did you want me to tag along for this meeting? I feel like I won’t really have anything to add.”

“Well,” Hange starts. “We figured with the awards ceremony coming up it’s going to have a lot of coverage and your name is going to be put out there. Erwin soft-launched your, well, existence not too long ago and we thought now that there was proof that there is life outside the walls that we could finally tell people about you.”

The entire time Hange speaks, Levi looks straight ahead. He seems unhappy about the situation.

Is he mad that I’m joining? Especially after the last meeting where I bent?

We stop outside of the room and Hange softly says, “Are you okay with going public? We don’t have to if you don’t want to.”

I shake my head. “It’s not that I have a problem with it it’s just…aren’t you worried that there will be backlash? Especially this soon after we’ve just told the public everything we just learned?”

Before Hange can say anything, Levi answers with a very pointed, “Yes.” I turn to look at him but he doesn’t immediately clarify what he means. After a moment he says, “I raised exactly that concern but Hange doesn’t seem to think it will be a problem.”

She huffs, and I can tell they must have had a long conversation about this already. “It’s not that I don’t think it will be a problem,” she explains. “It’s that now that we’re dropping so much information this is the perfect time to slide in that y/n has been working with us and gloss over the fact that we’ve hidden it. If we wait it will only snowball out of control.”

“Like I said,” Levi responds, clearly sick of the conversation. “I don’t see a reason to make it public knowledge in the first place.” 

Then, they both look at me for an answer. “Frankly, I don’t know what’s best. But for all anyone knows I’m just another soldier, especially when I’m wearing your uniform. I don’t think it’s totally necessary to be completely public.”

Hange’s lips tighten but she gives a tight nod. “Very well then. I see no reason why you should have to sit through this then.” 

I’m taken aback but I nod and part ways. I’m gone so fast that I don’t overhear the conversation between Hange and Levi.

“There, are you happy? You got your way,” Hange says acridly.

“Why are you so hell-bent on making her go public anyway?”

Hange bites back, “I didn’t think it was a good idea to keep her a secret in the first place! If people find out the Scouts are hiding something this big they’re going to be outraged! Then, the violence you’re so worried about will happen ten fold!”

Levi, finally losing patience, says, “She was kept a secret to keep her to ourselves and to keep her safe. That still stands.”

“Why are you so worried about it anyway?” Hange asks. 

Levi quickly looks away, the tips of his ears suddenly pink telling Hange everything she needs to know. Before she can interrogate him, he mutters, “Let’s just get in there already.”

We all gather in a beautiful grand hall in the palace for the award ceremony. There’s a bunch of people from the other branches there to watch. But, despite it being a monumental moment in these soldiers’ careers, no one is excited.

Standing with everyone before the ceremony begins, I recognize the girl that approaches us as Hitch, the girl that helped us in the woods when we were outlaws.

Before the mission, it was clear to everyone with eyes that Hitch had the hots for Marlow, the bowl-cut kid. Everyone except for Marlow, that is. Since Flock was in the group of recruits with Marlow, Jean suggests Flock talk about how brave he was in his final moments. He has really nice things to say, up until he ruins it at the end.

This kid has got to be one of the most annoying-

“Hey, why did you tell her that?!” Jean whisper yells at Flock.

With a pointed glare at Armin he says, “Because, somebody has to speak the truth around here.”

That’s enough to put me on the defensive, standing a little taller and moving more in between Armin and Flock.

Ever the empath, Armin tries to extend an olive branch by saying, “Listen, I heard about what you did, Flock. How hard you fought to ensure that Erwin would be revived-”

“That’s right!” Flock cuts him off. “You should be dead and Erwin should stand in your place. I’m not alone in thinking that. All of us do. Everyone that read that report had the same thought. Why wasn’t Erwin the one that was saved?”

Eren jumps in, “What do you know about Armin to justify saying that? Not a damn thing!”

With a smug look I want to smack right off, Flock says, “You’re right, I’m not a childhood friend of his. Hell, I’m not his friend at all! But I can tell you why he’s the one standing here right now. It’s because you two got emotional and Captain Levi did the same! You-”

“I didn’t get a chance to do that on the roof to shut you up, but I’ll be damned if I stand here and listen to you make a mockery of any of my squad!” I cut him off by freezing his spit and I now step fully in between him and Armin.

While he’s quiet before the ice melts, I forcefully say, “You were right talking to Hitch, you’re not a leader you’re a coward. All you’re able to do is hide behind someone better than you telling you every move you should make. You don’t understand the Captain’s choice because you don’t have enough foresight to take your head out of your ass, let alone make an important decision. Levi did exactly what Erwin would have wanted: he took a gamble that will pay off one day. I’ve said it to everyone that will listen at this point, but Erwin was the past and Armin will be the future. In case you didn’t notice, Erwin was deferring to Armin throughout the entire battle and even went so far as to leave him in charge of Levi’s squad. He’s got more leadership in his pinky finger than you do in your whole body.” I step in to get dangerously close. I want him to feel the venom dripping from my every word. “And if I ever hear you degrading Armin for a choice he played no part in or speaking ill towards the decision Captain Levi made - a choice you will never understand having to make - so help me, I’ll make you wish the Beast Titan obliterated your sorry ass.”

With a wave of my hand I melt the remainder of the ice in his mouth and he coughs for a moment before Levi appears around a pillar to call us all to line up. From where he appeared, I can tell that he must have heard my entire spiel but he doesn’t have time to say anything.

We line up and kneel down and I’m the first person in the back row, directly behind Hange. When Historia gets to Eren, there’s a horrific pause and I can’t see clearly but it looks like Eren makes a terrified face. It takes him a while to come to his senses but he quickly apologizes once he does and Historia moves on. But the entire situation was more than a little odd.

When Historia gets to me, she places the medal around my neck and tightens it, and when I go to kiss her hand I give it an extra little squeeze which she returns as the corners of her mouth twitch with a hidden smile.

After the ceremony, the rest of the day is filled with mostly nothing. Just lounging around and catching up on some much needed rest and relaxation. Especially considering that the following day we would be taking off to find the sea.

It was just Levi’s Squad and Hange that went on this bit of exploration, not that there really was anyone left to join us otherwise. 

We take off riding and go for what feels like forever. We don’t encounter a single titan for a very long time, and when we do it’s a pathetic little abnormal that can’t even really move. It came in handy though, because we could follow the trail that it clearly blazed years if not decades prior based on how overgrown it had become. We followed it until the grass turned to sand and it was at this point that I started to get excited.

Looking at the kids, there was wonder on everyones’ faces except for Eren. Something drastic has changed about him, even though I can’t quite place what it is. 

As we come around a large dune, I’m hit with the unmistakable scent of salt water and we’re faced with another wall. Eren calls out that he’s sure that’s what he remembers from his dad’s memories.

“If you take a deep breath, you can also smell the ocean!” I inform everyone.

It’s cute watching all of them breathe in after I say this, even Levi does it.

The wall isn’t very long, so we’re able to find the end fairly quickly and ride up a steep embankment. I race ahead, not because I want to beat everyone there, but because I want to make sure I’m in perfect position to see all of their faces.

And it’s a moment I’ll never forget. As each person finally crests the hill, the ocean breeze catches their hair and the look of pure amazement fills their faces. I wouldn’t trade being there for that moment for anything in the entire world.

No one knows what to do, and I think they’d be content to just look at it forever. I certainly wouldn’t be happy with just that though, so after taking it in for at least 10 minutes I finally say, “Well? Are we going to go down there and get in it or are we just going to stare at it forever!”

I lead the charge down, kicking my boots off as I practically run into the water. It’s crystal clear and a perfect temperature. As the waves gently crash across my feet and ankles, the sense of peace that washes over me is unlike anything I had ever felt.

I’m home.

The kids waste no time playing in the water. Sasha, Connie, and Jean immediately start horsing around and learn the hard way not to get salt water in your eyes. Armin finds a shell and I swear I saw the moment that he wanted to start collecting them. Hange doesn’t even know where to look and Levi keeps imploring her to be careful. 

Since I can dry myself off with a flick of my wrist, I start going deeper. From the shore, I hear Levi yell to me, “y/n! Don’t go so far!”

I turn and grin at him mischeviously. “I’m the only one here that knows anything about the ocean from experience, I’ll be fine!” 

Knowing it would freak him out and wanting to be cheeky, I jump up and fall backwards into the water, completely submerging myself. I make a little bubble of air and swim for a bit, admiring the fish and foliage that are still completely foreign to me.

When I come back up, Levi looks like he’s going to rip his hair out. I walk back to shore to give him some kind of reassurance.

I pat him on the shoulder before calling to everyone else. “If anyone would like to, I can make air pockets so that you can see the ocean floor and what it looks like underneath the water!”

Of course, everyone wants to but I tell them that they have to take turns because an air pocket wouldn’t hold enough oxygen for all of us at the same time. So one by one, I show everyone the ocean. The last person on the list being Levi, who wanted nothing to do with my little adventure but whom I forced to do it anyway.

Despite not being very interested on land, he clearly enjoyed himself once he got under water. I honestly didn’t even know his eyes could go that wide. 

That’s…cute.

While we’re in our literal own little bubble, he quietly says, “Is being back everything you had hoped it would be?”

I grin so hard it almost hurts. “And then some.”

When we reimerge, I notice everyone staring off into the distance. When I follow their gazes I see a white shape moving towards the horizon. Shielding my face from the sun, I shake my head after a moment of looking at it.

Hange inquires, “What is it y/n?”

I turn to look at her, kind of embarrassed. “Oh, it’s nothing. I guess being back at the ocean has made me a little homesick because I thought it looked like Appa.”

We keep an eye on the strange unidentified flying object, and I could swear it was getting closer. Even so, I couldn’t shake away the hope that maybe it was Appa. 

It’s a cloud, y/n. There’s no way or reason it would be Appa. What are the odds that anyone from the Gaang would come to find you the one time you’re at the beach, anyway?

Given the time of day, we all set our things down to get our pre-packed food out. While everyone sets up, I start drying off everyone that might need it. As I’m doing so, Levi suddenly yells “Y/n! Look out!” 

I turn around just as I’m clocked by something flying full speed at me. I stumble backwards. I’m dazed for a moment until I hear a familiar chittering sound.

“Momo?!” I exclaim.

In disbelief, I hear Jean say, “What the fuck.”

I turn again to see Aang gliding down.

So it was Appa!

listening: twilight mirage, still in that holiday special, episode 23. the way that there are eight fuckin episodes for that special........in part 1 or 2 they make a comment how they might have to do three parts and i was like. lol. lmao, even. i'm in the bit right now where they're doing an election and it's very funny. thisbe as the debate moderator made me laugh out loud.

reading: the best part of the game awards this year was the fashion, alyssa mercante: i looooved some of these looks. love the art corset on slide 4, jay-ann lopez on slide 15, the pleated dress on slide 17, the MATCHING BABY ON SLIDE 19, and the author's whole everything on slide 20.

sff's big fat problem, r. k. duncan: i was already aware of some of the stuff talked about here but i am definitely guilty of having less overt things - i.e. goblin emperor reference in there - totally fly by me. i feel like i saw a lot of people talking about rowling's fatphobia after she went mask-off but she is definitely on the more malicious end of the spectrum, it's a much much much more baked in problem than people give it credit for. thinking also about the locked tomb, which i love, but also makes some very weird comments about ortus that i did not clock at all until someone else pointed it out. just something i'm thinking about lately.

aaaand a short film that a grad student in my department made as a project. it's. not good. like i'm happy that he's doing hobbies or whatever but this short film commits the cardinal sin of being neither good nor bad, Just Boring. 2/10.

making: the [redacted project] is almost done!! i have 10 rows left. each row takes me about 15 minutes. i will definitely finish it by the end of the week, fringe and all. no pictures yet for obvious reasons but it will be in the first tuesdaypost of the year for 2024! the biggest challenge now is the point of contact on my left hand where i rest the knitting needle against my middle finger is aggravating on a sensory standpoint from overuse, so i have been knitting with one glove on that hand which has helped a lot.

there was a preview of these last week, but i added finishing touches to my gavle goat holiday cards! i used a metallic sharpie to add some horn embellishments and wrote a little note on the back, and mailed out a bunch :)

misc: the first christmas eve/day of my life where i didn't get chinese food!!! shock, horror, etc. i'm at my roommate's family's place so i experienced a real christmas situation. it was fine. her family & their home is like ... hallmark card vibes and idk how i feel about it. i want wonton soup :(

Last song: Probably either The Man or Anti-Hero by Taylor Swift. I just spent a week with my sister on vacation and she had just watched the Eras Tour movie so she was getting both of those stuck in my head all the time, and then we'd have to listen to them ofc.

Last movie: It was Host by Rob Savage (or at least it was when I started this, lol). I watched it 'cause I saw something on Insta about the Top 10 Scariest Movies according to what the average resting heart rate is for it. I didn't find it very scary (got me at the end though, woo boy) but I did love it - but then I love things that use the pandemic well and this definitely did imo. Plus it's all structured around (and shot through) a Zoom interface so it's only, like, fifty-seven minutes long because that's all you get when you don't pay for Zoom, haha.

Currently watching: Goosebumps, Last Week Tonight, The Fall of the House of Usher, Two Sentence Horror Stories, Our Flag Means Death and Ghost Files and I am half-assing all of it. I've either only started the first episode or only watched the first episode on all of those. I have no staying power these days. Though I am only one ep behind on Last Week Tonight \o/

Other stuff I watched this year: Unfortunately for you guys, I write fucking everything down and it is now the tenth month of the year. I GOT RECS. Well, Meg 2: The Trench, which is a cinematic masterpiece and I will take no questions on that (unless they're Joming related). (Cognizant of the month) Here are spooky things I watched this year and liked a lot: X, The Black Phone, The Menu, Terrifier and Terrifier 2 (this is definitely only for gore fans though), Bodies Bodies Bodies, Cocaine Bear (also a cinematic masterpiece, also not taking questions), Interview with the Vampire, Wednesday, Severance, Evil, The Last of Us, Over the Garden Wall, Magpie Murders, What We Do in the Shadows, and Shining Vale (haven't started the second season yet!). Also really liked: Paddington, Nimona, Barbie, Spider-man: Across the Spider-verse, Vivo, Derry Girls, The Bear, The Boys, Mythic Quest, Only Murders in the Building (I haven't watched the new season yet though but I expect great things), Reboot, Tuca & Bertie, Los Espookys, Barry, Extraordinary, Crashing (I literally watched it three times in a row - watching Sam and Fred fall in love 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻 plus I fucking love Jonathan Bailey - I consistently find him ridiculously charming), Hacks, Avenue 5 (so sad this got canceled when I feel like it just hit its stride), Staged (I've watched it probably six times now), Abbott Elementary, A Black Lady Sketch Show, Ted Lasso, I Think You Should Leave Now (just for that one sketch, you know the one and, if you don't, I am HAPPY to tell you about it!), Unstable (petition for Fred Armisen to be in everything though, right?), Black Mirror, Central Park, Elite (I haven't watched the new season yet!), Reservation Dogs (ditto), The White Lotus, Good Omens, Letterkenny, Minx (what's ditto but for the third time?), Heartstopper, Sasaki and Miyano, and The Other Two.

Shows I dropped/didn’t finish: I'm behind on everything all the time so I'm only going to answer for shows I dropped and I don't think I've dropped any this year?

Currently reading: The Dead Take the A Train by Cassandra Khaw & Richard Kadrey (about halfway through), House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski (I'll be reading this until I die, I think), Cunk on Everything by Philomena Cunk, The Fragile Threads of Power by V.E. Schwab (nearly finished!), The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight by Jennifer E. Smith, My Darling Girl by Jennifer McMahon and The Vampire Lestat by Anne Rice (decided to do a reread of the IwtV series this year since I never actually finished it and only got to book ten and I read it way too long ago to remember anything that's happening if I just picked it up now).

Currently listening to: My calendar alarm telling me to go to my dog's vet appointment.

Currently working on: getting at least a third of the way through My Darling Girl

The Tragedy of Ed and Izzy's Relationship

Izzy's thoughts are full of Ed.

As first mate, he must follow Ed's orders. His entire job focuses on doing Ed's bidding. Following every whim, for years.

When Ed is off his game or careless or eccentric, that's Izzy's problem too.

Loyalty is deeply important to Izzy, or at least his personal sense of it. Even when Izzy ended up banished from the ship, throwing threats at Edward before rowing into the horizon, he was worried about Ed. About what Stede was doing to his brain. You can hear the desperation in his voice when Stede is facing the firing squad. He won't let Ed "ruin" himself. In fact, he's adhering to Ed's old principles: the love of a pet makes a man weak.

And he isn't entirely wrong. Ed's emotionally devastated by Stede's abandonment.

Their relationship, Izzy and Ed's, is important to him. It's Izzy who first to apologize to Ed after their fight. Throughout the episode, he's exasperated but trying to be patient. Trying to redirect Ed's attention without being a dick.

Until, of course, he explodes over Ed's clothing switch, his patience annihilated.

But that episode tells us a lot about how Edward views Izzy too. How Izzy's real concerns about imminent death go in one ear and out the other. He barely flinches at Izzy's resignation, totally calm about Izzy preparing to leave at the end of the episode.

For me, one of the most tragically telling moments about Ed and Izzy's relationship is in episode 10. Not the yelling and the slamming against walls. Before that.

Ed is cleaning up the mess he made in the captain's cabin. He's talking to Izzy, who is skuling against the books. Ed's tone is casual. Even when Izzy says he's going to speak plainly, Ed doesn't seem to expect what's to come.

In their last scene together, Ed suggested they shouldn't even be pirates anymore. Izzy snapped to the crew, told them to call Ed Blackbeard. But Ed told him he didn't want to be called Blackbeard anymore.

In the recent past, Izzy nearly quit over Ed's behavior. He tried to kill Stede in a duel. He threatened Ed when he was banished from the ship. Then he got Stede and Ed captured, got punched by Ed, and witnessed Ed choose servitude to the King over being his captain again.

The audience knows Izzy is upset. From the circumstances, Izzy's personality, and his body language, it's obvious he's seething.

"Can't believe I was living like this. Can you, Iz?"

" ...Izzy?"

But Ed has no idea.

Izzy has, both metaphorically and literally, been shouting his concerns since episode 2, yet Ed doesn't see it coming. Even though it's likely been coming for years.

Ed hasn't been paying attention.

Maybe that's because he didn't need to. Izzy seems to have been around so long, and has been so loyal, Ed has taken him for granted. It's a classic case of a man being shocked when his wife asks for a divorce when she's been complaining for years. Sure, Izzy might complain, but he won't do anything about it, Ed thinks. And if Izzy gets really, genuinely mad, Ed can just apologize and make it up to him in some way, then go right back to doing what he wants once the fire is out.

But maybe he just doesn't care. He talks to Izzy, sure, but does he listen? Ed wanted to engage with Izzy on episode 4, but his timing was abysmal. Izzy, understandably, couldn't even begin to talk about model ships and such stuff while in fear of his life. Not that Ed cared. That was boring, so he just spoke over Izzy.

Ed has leaned on Izzy for a long time. He thought Izzy admired him enough to always be there, no matter what. Even if Ed decided to give up piracy and write sad song lyrics and have an affair with a gentleman, Izzy would be there.

But Ed finally changed too much for Izzy. Now he doesn't respect him and won't serve him. Izzy lived off scraps before, but now there aren't even crumbs of satisfaction from serving a man he admired.

Without anyone to lean on or trust, Ed decided he'd rather keep the reliable comfort of Izzy's support than risk being left with nothing.

If they knew how to be proper friends to one another, this wouldn't have happened. Izzy loves Ed and cares about his welfare. If that had been properly cultivated outside of the first mate and captain dynamic, Izzy would support his heartbroken friend, and Ed would know he wouldn't have to hide himself to be loved.

But they aren't proper friends. Not if Izzy pours himself empty for nothing in return. Not if Ed needs to hide himself away so he isn't left alone.

STAR TREK UPDATE TIME. last night we watched tng's "phantasms" and ds9's "melora."

i think what ultimate put me on the side of "pass" was freud being involved. i'm grateful that the episode made it clear he was a hack, but still. holodeck bad

i wish the nightmares had been spookier but i did kindof love what we got. deanna is made of cake and worf is eating her (out) with as much gusto as he possibly can. beverly is sucking (off) riker by the bar. so true. this was my favorite part of the episode

i think picard is a pussy to not just tell that admiral he doesn't wanna go to the party. like, man up, dude. and it's if mandatory, then just get it over with

two julian episodes in a row!!! ds9 is a little weird with distribution sometimes, i felt we had two kira eps in a row too at some point

i was actually ducking and covering waiting for "oh yaaaay we cured the disability!!!" and i'm so glad they did not do that. early on there was an alarming comment about how dax hadn't seen a wheelchair in centuries and i was like Oh No and then i realized she meant one with like wheels instead of a grav motor. girl, captain pike had one of those like 105 years ago. be serious. actually wait did his even have wheels.........whatever

the flying scenes were SO GOOD? i was prepared for bad special effects but it actually looked VERY believable

i love it when julian has game even though i also love it when he's a cringefail loser

sketchy klingon restaurant my beloved. they tried to feed her half-dead racht and she was not having it. then he serenaded them later. 10/10

whatever quark and odo had going on this episode was really funny as usual bc odo was just like man i wish i COULD let that guy kill him. that guys prosthetic was fucking amazing by the way. but i feel like we haven't heard mch from odo or kira lately...i miss them. i miss garak too.

i hope this ep was groundbreaking when it aired in 1993 or whenever. i feel like it did a pretty good job considering what a landmine the subject can be. not perfect, but passable

Yeah, yeah, I discovered this song from the trailers for GotG Vol 3. No, this doesn't mean I like GotG or any other Marvel nonsense. This song just... yeah. When the crescendo comes towards the end, death feels a little less near to me than usual. It's like medicine.

Harder Than You Think by Public Enemy

This is a pretty famous song, I'm not sure where I first heard it. The subject matter is heavy but the overarching tone of the song is triumphant and jubilant. I really appreciate that juxtaposition.

What I Got by Sublime

Saints Row The Third turned me on to this song, and @sprog-2-electric-boogaloo turned me on to Saints Row The Third. Idk what else to tell you. Lovin is what I got!

are we going lifetime-wise? because if so it's 100% trixie mattel. i don't listen to her stuff a ton anymore (though i'm getting back into it hehe) but her music legit saved my life when i was fifteen and coping with my best friends death. it still means sooo much to me and always makes me think of her bc we saw her live in the front row when we were thirteen :'-) i have a signed cd from that show it was the best night of my life

if we're going recently tho definitely the mountain goats-- their music has inspired me sooo much in anorexia recovery and got me through a really bad depressive episode when i was 17/18 that i almost did Not make it through.
