There were always quieter days at work, but the mood today was somber. A year ago, everyone had known that America would enter the war and that it was, at that point, mostly a matter of time. But that wasn't true anymore.

The latest lottery had been announced last night, and Vivian had never found herself seeking out Clarence's hand more than to see if his number had been on the list. It hadn't. But that hadn't been true for everyone. They'd walked past people crying on the subway, and those who simply stared ahead with vacant eyes.

"They're going to ask questions about us soon," Vivian calls through the propped-open door between the washroom and the living room. She leans towards the mirror, pinning a hair roller in place. It's the usual shape of their nights. She prepares for bed, and then Clarence does.

"They already do," he says, voice growing closer. She catches his eyes in the mirror as he comes to lean against the doorway. And it's true, they do: about the fact that she works and has no plans to stop even once the war is over, that they don't have children, or own a house, or any of the other great number of things that make them just so subtly unlike the other couples.

"About children" she elaborates.

He grimaces. "You don't want children,"

She sticks another roller into her hair. "No," she agrees. "And you don't want them with me," but they both know that what they really want isn't an option. It was why they ever got married in the first place. She thinks the only reason they've managed to avoid more pressure thus far is because they had still been newly married enough, but it would be their fifth anniversary soon.

Clarence tries to laugh, bitter as it might be, and nods in acknowledgement of the truth of it all.

"They'll probably listen for a while yet about worries of ending up like our parents." Like her own father, she doesn't add, who came back in nothing but flesh. Now is hardly the time to have children, so soon to when everyone thinks they'll need to ration. But after the war... she'll be older then, but not so old as for it to still be unreasonable and they'll need a better excuse.

And there is, perhaps, a comfort in discussing the future like this. She doesn't want him to die in the war, as much a farce as the marriage might be. And the last day... they've come closer to the risk than has felt real since the day he had to register.

He seems to catch onto the concern before she needs to say it. "We need something they won't question,"

Vivian nods.

"Fear of being widowed?"

"Only so long as the war lasts."

"Notoriety?" This time, Vivian turns to look at him directly, and the sigh says it all. "The assistant and a daytime television star? We're hardly the most notable couple in New York," whatever dreams they both might have to the contrary.

They both fall into silence for a long minute while Vivian finishes preparing her hair for tomorrow.

"Infertility," she says a moment later, and Clarence's eyes light up.

"We play it off as a tragedy," he says.

"A mutual desire that just isn't to be," she adds.

"No one asks anything past it," he says, and a split second later. "But now that you're done, it's my turn with the washroom now."

An hour later, when there's nothing left illuminating their apartment but a lamp, she touches his shoulder gently. "For what it's worth, I am sorry I can't give it to you."

He catches her wrist before she can move away, leaning his head against it. "Don't be. How could I ever play the handsome heart-throb if I'm living the role of the exhausted father?"

"The same way you always have," Vivian answers. "You're a good actor,"

Clarence laughs, and it's just enough to lighten the mournful air. "Ah, Vi, if only you were the person running it all. Maybe then the world would see my true vision. You're the best wife I could have asked for."

mydei having a library is absolutely heartbreaking symbolism. it's a running gag that the kremnoan language doesn't have many words; there's no word for flee, no word for fear, even no word for love. i know the library was his family's, but still -- it is such a distinct symbol of how mydei wants to break kremnoan tradition. how he openly rejects the idea that violence is the only valid form of communication. how he always dismisses the baseless rumours surrounding his abilities, proving that he values truth over glory. we see mydei try to talk his people into reason. we see him apologize to tribbie for being rude. we even see him (begrudgingly) admit to phainon that he knows how to interpret poetry. time and time again, mydei chooses language -- and truth -- over violence. so when he invites phainon to visit his library in the next life, he's not just expressing hope -- he's asking phainon to remember him by what he really believes in. even if i become the avatar of strife, he's saying, even if you have to kill me one day -- in the next life, please see me as the person i've tried to become.

mydei knows the power of a name, perhaps because his language has so few of them. and that makes it doubly ironic that he personally has so many titles: son of gorgo. the patricidal crown prince. kingslayer. godslayer. the undying. but as krateros points out, the name he prefers is the one he uses with the chrysos heirs. and although mydei doesn't talk much, all his actions seem to say the same thing.

santos creates a new group chat, names it ⛔👑💊⛔ and proceeds to send dozens of innocent looking pics she snaps of kingdon together, in various situations, always with the caption: “langdon who is going to be divorced (in...?)” and several ellipsis come to life as everyone types back with a random timeframe.

it starts a trend. the others follow santos’ lead and start doing the same, playing private eye whenever the flow is calm. it's harmless fun. in the beginning, it's just a joke. really, it is. after a while, it's still a joke. mostly. but then... then langdon actually does separate from his wife. and, eventually, does get divorced. and then dana gets added to the group chat - no one comes clean, but santos is suspecting perlah, and she's known to have a nose for this shit. and that's when the bets start for real.

collins isn't in the group chat - she rejects the invite - but gets regular updates from dana. the pic saga continues, but the default caption changes to: “langdon who is going to remarry.” robby is blissfully unaware of the group chat but he's also been the live slug reaction meme personified the whole time, so there's that.

📱 garcia once sends a screen recording of langdon's phone - that she presumably sent herself first - of his home screen/lock screen that pans from his kids and dog to mel at a park;

🧋 shen once catches them at this new coffee shop downtown, mid bickering, as an annoying langdon attempts to get an annoyed mel to try something other than her usual order;

🎥 mckay goes to the movies with her dad and harrison one fine evening just to see them with mel's sister becca buying tickets and popcorn;

🌙 mohan once forwards what looks suspiciously like a surveillance type of photo abbot sent her of the two of them on the hospital rooftop, at night, gazing at the stars, shoulder to shoulder;

🩺 whitaker once sends a series of hurried blurry shots of them smiling stupidly at eachother as they jog around, in and out of patient rooms during a slower shift;

👀 javadi, as usual, forgets to turn on the flash, so no one really understands the intricacies of the ritual, but they're standing supremely and unnecessarily close as they talk while maintaining intense eye contact;

🧥 donnie clocks them whip quick at the ambulance bay this one time when langdon is insisting on giving mel his jacket because it got cold and she left hers inside her locker and there's no time to go get it before the patient arrives, mel!

🍮 jesse gets a good one of them at the cafeteria around lunch time, eating spoonfuls out if the same pudding cup in the background, with ellis front and center hooking a thumb over her shoulder at them with a knowing smirk;

💤 princess finds them in the break room after a rush, sitting on the couch, sharing ear buds, langdon's head on mel's shoulder, and mel staring at him as he slept instead of at her opened lava lamp app;

🚗 perlah once discreetly records scant seconds of them leaving together in langdon's car at the end of a shift from hell, langdon carrying mel's things and opening the door for her to groggily climb in, then turning the phone to get her own deadpan expression on camera;

🖥️ dana doesn't take any pictures because she's too busy being in charge of both the betting poll, the official excel file with all the pertinent names, dates, and amounts, as well as the photo album they're going to print and gift them with at the wedding, whenever the hell that ends up being.
