personally i think tommy aligns a little more with my eddie headcanons in terms of his queerness in the sense that buck? did not know. he wasn’t actively repressing anything, from everything we know he’s not religious and wasn’t raised in any church, so buck probably just thought he was a really passionate ally up until tommy kissed him (which, side note, i still cannot believe happened). and from everything we’ve seen regarding articles and post ep interviews of oliver and tim saying this is a positive arc, i have a feeling buck’s not gonna feel guilty of his bisexuality and his attraction to a man.

they were both in the army and with eddie we know canonically he enlisted pretty young. we can assume tommy probably joined fresh out of high school and then became a firefighter when he came back. eddie is from a catholic background and while we don’t know anything about tommy’s religious background, i can’t imagine it’s easy to be gay in the military and as a firefighter in the 2000s and not walk away with insane amounts of internalized homophobia.

now, i think he knew. i think he’s known. if he’s 45 years old he would’ve been entering middle school during the aids crisis. if he was in the military during the early-mid 2000s it was during the “don’t ask, don’t tell” period (that eddie misses by about a year i think). i think tommy not only knew, but all of america and his job and then his fire captain made sure to remind him how wrong he was for it.

(i think eddie is in this same boat. i’m not sure if he knows exactly what it is yet, but i don’t think he’s oblivious to his feelings the way buck was. i think he’s very much aware of them and very much aware of how they scare the shit out of him.

Both Buck/Tommy and Buddie shippers are being so dramatic about everything.

On one hand, you have people acting like Buck and Tommy is written in the stars and anyone who dislikes them are being unjust and hateful. On the other, you have people acting as if Buck can’t possibly be in a relationship with a man who isn’t Eddie, and claiming he can is somehow based in racism and hatred of Eddie.

Neither is true! The problem is that prior to 7x04, Evan Buckley was not a canon queer character. He was viewed that way by fans and Oliver Stark was all for it, but that does not change the actual canon history of the character. Therefore, the writers can only fix what they feel fits the current story. They can retcon a few things and so on, but both sides are acting like they’re right, and it makes no sense.

Yes, Buddie shippers have Oliver and Ryan on their side for the most part. Yes, Oliver believes Buck has been queer all along and he thinks a lot of the headcanons about his character’s reaction to things make sense, but he is NOT saying it’s all true. He agrees Buck was likely experiencing some jealousy when Eddie first showed up, but that does not mean Tim Minear is going to make that theory canon. It’s fans and Oliver who think it, but that does not equal canon.

As well, with things being slightly retconned or adjusted to fit the story… Tommy is obviously no longer an asshole by proximity. He was rude to Hen and Chim, but we’ve seen he him interact with the two of them since in civil ways. We know Chim thinks he’s cool. Continuing to demand he apologize on screen is a waste of time. It was five seasons ago, and the story had to change to fit Tim bringing his character back. It happens.

As for Buck/Tommy shippers, y’all have got to get off the high horse of Possibility. At the moment, there are so many ways their relationship can go, and the only reason you all are so high and mighty about it, is because you’re technically never going to be wrong until you’re wrong. Which is annoying.

Yes, Tim could choose to have Tommy stick around for another season. Yeah, Buck and Tommy could be endgame. Yeah, Buck and Tommy could… any and everything is possible, but acting as if Tommy is the love of Buck’s life and deserves fan devotion is crazy. Don’t get me wrong, I like the character. He seems nice if a little cocky, but I like that. I like that he’s written as a grown man who, even though he’s changed, still has a little bit of asshole in him.

Because yes, what he did to Buck on their first date was rude. He didn’t explain anything and left him standing outside the restaurant as if he hadn’t just told him he’s never dated a man before, and as if they hadn’t just run into his best friend. It was a dick move. However, it’s also kinda realistic. So I dug it, but that’s also all we really know about him.

Tommy is an army vet, flies helicopters, was a firefighter, and is gay. Which he struggled to come to terms with, and can be a dick. The way y’all treating him like a savior is insane. Y’all are trying to rub it in people’s face that his relationship with Buck is canon while Buddie isn’t, and I don’t understand that. Buck wasn’t even bisexual three episodes ago, so where is this higher than thou attitude even coming from?

The only thing people should be focused on is the fact that Buck is now canonically bisexual. Tim liked the idea and Oliver loved it, so they finally made it happen. Now, his story has even more potential. I’d even go so far as to say season 7 is going to be a cleaning and re-establishing of all the characters, because so many of them feel a little different.

We’ve got bi!Buck, meaning we’ll get to see him in one or more relationships that he isn’t used to being in. We’ve got a new actor playing Harry, and he’s older, meaning they’re going to have to write to his strengths and build a storyline there that is more mature. Bobby and Athena almost died together for real for real, thus hopefully we’ll get to see their relationship evolve and what if it changes them in any way. Chim and Maddie are finally getting married, so we get to see them kickstart a new chapter together. Hen and Karen have a new child, which will hopefully bring them more storylines and hijinks as a family. And Eddie is dealing with forcing himself to accept a relationship he may not even want to be in. And he’s aware this time, which could result in him ignoring his fears or bowing out, then having to face what bowing out means.

Point is, there is no reason for all this drama.

Buddie is not guaranteed just because it is a popular want for fans, and an accepted theory by the actors and showrunner. They’ve all said it has to fit the overall story without forcibly gearing the writing in that direction. Which means it could happen two episodes from now or two seasons from now. We just have to wait and see.

At the same time, Buck and Tommy are not an established couple yet. They’re going on their second date, and it’s been said Tommy isn’t in the last few episodes of the season. So it’s possible he and Buck are still together, but Lou isn’t a series regular nor regular recurring, so he’s just not contracted to be on set. Which is fine, but acting like a quick breakup is also bad storytelling is ridiculous.

Fans have hated Buck’s relationships with women from the jump, and him breaking up fast isn’t exactly new. So if it happens with the first man he dates… okay. Tommy can become more than a stepping stone, but the writers aren’t obligated to make his first experience with a man something deep and profound. It can be fun and eye-opening and still have mattered, even if it ends fast.

Y’all have got to let the stories play out, and not scream bloody murder if your headcanon doesn’t become canon. Because truth be told, Buck being canon bi is the biggest flex of fan service I’ve ever seen, even if I think it adds to the depth of him. So I can’t imagine how difficult it is to be sure not to continue giving that same group of fans everything they want outright, when there’s so much more story to unfold.

Which means they can’t just make Tommy the love of Buck’s life because Buck/Tommy fans have ditched Buddie or were never Buddie shippers, and want to be right. But they also can’t have Eddie come out and he and Buck start dating, because Buddie shippers have waited five seasons. Just wait to see what happens, and in the meantime, enjoy watching Buck discover more of himself. With Tommy as his current love interest, and Eddie as his best friend.

A while ago I remember someone pointing out how Viv makes all of her “tops” bi/pan (Blitz, Ozzie, Husk, Chaz, etc.) and many (but not all) of her “bottoms” gay twinks (Angel, Stolas, probably Fizz? etc.).

She just liked a tweet basically saying Stolas and Fizzarolli are too feminine to ever like women which like, fair I can’t see either genuinely being into girls because they’ve never showed canon interest, BUT, I think it just continues fo prove the point she fetishizes gay men as “the woman” because they are solely attracted to men, and for some reason they’re all effeminate. Again, I love my femme bois, but Viv seems to refuse to believe gay men can be anything other than “twinky bottom” and bi/pan men as anything other than “dom protector.” Why can’t we also have a buff hyper masculine gay character, or an androgynous bi one?!? The fetishization and heteronormitivity is off the charts.

It might not be about fetish, but I think it’s a way to project onto male characters in a gay relationship as a woman. You don’t want any girls threatening the ‘bottom’ status, cause it’s a fantasy. And people have this idea that “if you’re a gay top why not just top cis women too? Any (redacted) is a goal!” And that is actually just homophobia. Like I refuse to believe she isn’t into her fair share of yaoi, and I’m not shaming her for that it’s nothing to be ashamed of. But tropes like that feed into your work. It happens to all artists and writers super into anime. The tops are masculine so attracted to femininity of any gender, all the men are into men, any men can be shipped together, and all the women are into men, but they get in the way and compete with the bottom. That’s your traditional yaoi formula.

It comes down to power, thinking attraction to men means submission to them, and attraction to women is about dominating them. This is why a basic level feminist education is so important. It can really help free you from being confined into concepts like this. Sometimes “gay is okay” “kink is so crazy and funny!” isn’t enough to leave that heteronormative conservative mindset. You have to go deeper.

Stolas is effeminate? How? He wears grey, red, suits, capes, all very typical royal wear. He’s not feminine at all he’s vibrant and masc, but just very pathetic and wimpy. That’s sortve okay for me, i feel stolas’ story makes more sense if he’s queer and is still questioning, Angel I don’t mind either way, fizz I think his story has more of a dark layer with the robots if he is gay. And probably had to pretend to be bisexual to cater to a wider market. He is the only one who’s shown discomfort/disgust at women coming on to him (if you count those gross robot clients) and good for him. Gay men deserve empowering stories too.

And do you also notice how…Angel is fine with sleeping with women for a twenty and has before, Stolas had to sleep with a woman, fizz robots are abused by women while conscious. The heck is that about.

I know Buck wasn’t originally written as bisexual but looking back to season 2, you actually can interpret buck being attracted to eddie. He may even had a little crush on him. But Eddie being canonically straight didn’t show any romantic or sexual interest towards buck. I think if he was canonically gay and interested in buck and made any moves towards it, he could have had his bi awakening or realization back then and could have caught serious romantic feelings for Eddie. You can’t deny some parallels between his first meeting with eddie and with tommy. The unknown jealousy and the ranting about them. But because eddie is straight and never showed any sign of beeing into buck, his (maybe) feelings for eddie turned into an incredibly great friendship. That’s why I think his feelings for Tommy are very real and don’t have anything to do with Eddie. Tommy is canonically gay and reciprocated the feelings and attraction to buck. He was the one who made the first move and kissed buck. Buck was clearly interested in him and tried to get his attention. I do think that if tommy wasn’t interested in him and didn’t kiss him, buck still wouldn’t have figured out that he’s bisexual and his feelings towards him probably would’ve eventually turned into friendly feelings. I personally tend to hope for bucktommy rather than buddie but I wouldn’t be mad if buddie became canon. But I think the only way would be to make eddie demisexual, because there were really no signs that he likes men in any way other than his strong connection and chemistry with buck. Different from buck where you can retrospectively see many unintentional signs.

I fell in love with them and I’m more in favor of them than the ship that shall not be named. I can’t stress it enough, I want bucktommy to be endgame. I’m a bucktommy slut.

I do believe you can look back and see clues that maybe buck was into eddie, whether that was intentional or not. I believe the writers accidentally queer coded him and when they noticed they decided to run with it when they got the green light from the network.

But as you said, he could have had an initial crush on a friend and that changed with time. And that is completely fine! It doesn’t mean he had been in love with him the whole time and repressing it. Of course there is the possibility that buck and eddie can be an item, if the writers decide to go that route.

That being said, as of now, there are no concrete evidence on screen that buck and eddie were/are going in that direction. Like you said, eddie hasn’t shown he’s into men/buck and if buck was into eddie since the beginning and vice versa, i believe the writers would have pushed that queer coding to the max she-ra style to force the network to get them together. There had been opportunities for the writers to not be that ambiguous.

And yes! The canon bi buck storyline is not about Eddie and it shouldn’t be even if buck and eddie are supposed to be endgame. All the signs since 07x03 (when Buck touched Tommy’s shoulder and we all got a little bit of the gay vibe) have pointed that Buck had been into tommy and mistook who he was placing the jealousy on during 07x04. It’s a classic trope and I hate that b*ddie stans conveniently forgot how misdirection works to feed into what they want (not only that, but also stating as fact). When 07x05 rolled around and we got the coming out scene, it’s clear to me that there was no intention to place bucks attraction to men on eddie or eddie also realizing he’s queer. It would have been the perfect opportunity to sprinkle in some queer eddie but there was not even a subtle hint of that in that entire scene and I honestly hope their friendship stays that way.

Not to be a bitch but, why can’t they “just” be friends? It’s so rare to have these archetypes of characters be as vulnerable and devoted to each other, without an ounce of toxic masculinity, being true friends and nothing else. I whole heartedly believe what buck and eddie have is even bigger than family or romance, they are each others rocks and defining them as brothers or “husbands” does a disservice to their relationship. I think of them more as platonic soulmates. They are others ride or die, which reminds me a lot of Marjan and Paul from lone star (they have a very similar dynamic and despite theoretically having the possibility of being a couple - as a straight woman and straight man - I don’t see them going that way ever because that’s not what their relationship is. They love each other, would literally die for each other but are not and will never see each other as potential romantic partners).

On a waaaaaaaaay lighter note: I’m excited for next episode. We are surely getting more bucktommy and I simply can’t wait to see what the writers have cooking up for this lovely ship!

With how weirdly dependent James and Sirius were of each other, I can't help but think there was a hidden war between students when they would fight over whether those two were 1. friends 2. friends that fucked 3. Brothers 4. Lovers and James running after Lily was them trying to keep their love hidden.

I also think that if the other students breathed a word of suspicion, either James or Sirius would curse the hell out of them. I am in the camp that believes both James and Sirius really subscribed to traditional masculinity stereotypes; therefore, any hint other students thinking they might be queer would cause them to spiral and shut down any talk of it.

Here’s what I see: James and Sirius get closer and closer physically as the years go on. Maybe they don’t even realize it’s attraction or love—maybe they think it’s normal to touch your best friend like this. Maybe it’s normal to climb into each other’s bed and hold each other when they’re sad/lonely/depressed, lay his head in the other’s lap, sit closely on the sofa and let their thighs touch. Then, someone like Snape sneers that they’re queer, and even the hint of it terrifies them (this is the 1970s, after all—but this would happen today, too, honestly). Maybe they’re about fifteen when this happens, so they try to keep their distance. James develops a crush on Lily, and bisexual James can pretend he’s straight, and maybe Sirius dates a few girls and bisexual Sirius is attracted to them, so he can pretend too.

Anyway, maybe time goes on, they date girls, whatever, and they try not to be all over each other. They can pretend. Anyway, maybe they think it was just loneliness or something, nothing queer, but they still look away when the other person changes and try to sit not so close to each other. But then it’s seventh year, and James is on cusp of dating Lily, and Sirius feels oddly hurt by it, even if he hasn’t “felt” anything for James in a couple of years. Let’s say if this is the canon universe, nothing happens. But if this were an AU, maybe Sirius and James grow slightly distant in their denial, and maybe they even start quarreling as James gets closer and closer to Lily. Then, finally, they’re fighting outright, unable to sort through their feelings in a way that toxic masculinity allows. Anyway, they have sex. And they keep it secret because they aren’t supposed to do this. And they can’t resist—they do it again and again, catching each other in the corridors. They ambush each other in broom closets, the showers, the passageway behind the mirror. They can’t let Remus and Peter find out. But they’re desperate for each other, and they steal moments together whenever they can. Again, this is 1970s—this is not something that is allowed.

So anyway, I think if there WERE rumors about James and Sirius, they would have shut them down immediately and never gave people a reason to think they were tooooooo close ever again. Remus might have his suspicions, but he would assure Peter that it was nothing to keep his friends’ secret safe (after all, they kept his safe).

I know you were probably expecting a fun answer but I’m not fun and I love sadness and drama 😂

And honestly? I truly believe I might even like this more. The idea that hey, yes, a bisexual man and a straight man can continue to be best friends, co-parents, to show vulnerability with one another and still keep it platonic.

That men overall are allowed to show their emotions and be human and love each other without it inherently being sexual or romantic.

Especially when one of those characters is a Hispanic man, because men of color have so little freedom to express themselves and show their love loudly and openly for their family.

Because Evan Buckley is Eddie’s family.

And they don’t need to be a couple for that to still be true. And if you don’t think it’s possible for two grown men to love each other and still be a family without also being in love, then you need to take a good long look at yourself.

I watched the new episode of 9-1-1

a personal essay on queerbaiting (sorta)

I watched the new episode of 9-1-1, and immediately burst into tears as the credits started rolling.

Then I rewound the last six minutes, and watched the scene again, pausing to rewind the kiss. Again. And again. And again.

We got a kiss. I didn’t know we were getting a kiss. I sorta knew we were getting bi Buck, but I didn’t know we were getting a kiss. After last week’s episode, a lot of people were 100% convinced we were getting bi Buck. I saw their reactions before I watched that episode, too, and I was so confused once I finished it. Had we seen the same episode? That guy, Tommy, Buck’s so-called bisexual awakening-guy, was barely in there. He had about two memorable lines, and then he was in the background of a different shot, where he received a job-well-done slap on the shoulder from Buckley. That last one’s the one people were focusing on online. Look at the way this is framed, look at how he’s positioned, between Buck and Eddie. This is foreshadowing how he’s gonna get between them. Buck and Tommy is gonna be the gateway into buddie. They’re actually gonna do buddie, why else would they introduce a relationship between Buck and Tommy?

Reader, I’ll keep it straight with you. I did not believe them. After a while I gathered a lot of people already knew the name of the next episode; Buck, Bothered and Bewildered. They’d seen some stills, they knew there would be conflict and jealousy within that trio. They were putting it all together with comments and hints dropped by the actors. All those things added up, and it did paint a far more convincing picture. And I thought it was fun! I reblogged a few posts about it, I think, or at least I liked some. But the fact remains: I did not believe them. I thought, oh, imagine how cool it would be if they actually went there. I thought, yeah, realistically it would make sense to bring in a third person if they were actually gonna do it. That way they could test the waters, gauge audience response, and it could work as a catalyst for the relationship after so long. But mostly I thought Okay, so they’re gonna bring in Buck’s fear of not being enough for the people he loves again, this time through his friendship with Eddie, and we’re gonna get some sort of final resolution for that. Like, a big moment of catharsis. Or something along those lines, anyway. It just seemed to me like the most realistic thing that could happen. I mean, the idea of canon buddie was nice, of course it was! The queerbait is why I started watching the show in the first place: I wanted a good queerbait! But ultimately, a ship like that going canon was completely unrealistic. I speak from experience, after all.

Maybe it would’ve been different if I was younger. I remember being in fandoms when I was a teen. I remember reading theories, watching youtube-videos with “proof” that this or that was real, that it was gonna go canon. I remember getting my hopes up, thinking Oh my god what if they’re actually gonna do it!? for shows and pairings that, in hindsight, were completely unrealistic. Maybe that’s why I, even with fairly good evidence in front of me, didn’t actually get my hopes up this time. Because why be that stupid? Why invest emotionally like that? Why not just enjoy what we actually had instead, and then get anything extra from fanworks? Haven’t we learned by now?

I woke up this morning and opened tumblr, and I read half a sentence about how we actually have bisexual Buck confirmed canon now, before I quickly closed the app to avoid too detailed spoilers. Oh my god they were right! I can’t wait to watch the episode, I thought happily, and went on with my day. I opened the app again a few hours later, and scrolled for a few minutes, until I saw a brief glimpse of one, maybe one and a half gifs. Bucks face, Tommy’s face. Warm orange-y yellow lighting, Buck’s loft, you still owe me a beer. Close the app, move on. There were other posts throughout the day, more glimpses, all along the same lines as the first one. The last one came late in the evening, this time on twitter. Just the word in all caps; ANNOUNCEMENT, and then Bucks face and a bisexual pride flag.

And then finally, finally, after I’d brushed my teeth and gotten into bed, I was alone with my laptop, and I could watch the episode. The hype had built up, I was so excited to finally watch it. I was internally vibrating just a little bit. I was giggly, I was grinning widely, I was making comments to myself out loud, and laughing. I said oh my god, they’re really laying it on thick. I remember watching that scene for the first time and thinking how Tommy really looked so nervous at some points. That last one I found interesting. I really liked the actor’s portrayal; His facial expressions were quite subtle, and I thought he captured that nervous feeling so well. Maybe I took such notice of it because, well, I wasn’t quite expecting it.

I wasn’t expecting nervousness in an interaction between Buck and Tommy, because I still wasn’t actually expecting anything. At least I don’t think I was. Even with everything I’d seen online. Even as I was watching the show, I convinced myself. Those words, you still owe me a beer, they’ve misinterpreted them. They think it’s an invitation to a date because Buck’s jealousy in this episode is making it more plausible than ever before. Sure, the show’s leaning into it this time, but they’re gonna pull the rug out next episode. No, of course it wasn’t an invite to a date, what show were you watching, are you delusional? It’s just gonna be one week of people speculating and theorizing and building it up, and then the show’s gonna resolve it with some no-homo followed by a nice new buddie moment. The buzz will die down, and things will go back to normal.

And then the kiss happened. And then I burst into tears.

And now I think, oh my god isn’t it wild that they’re introducing a new romantic relationship for one of the main characters, and for the entire lead-up to the relationship, both Buck and Tommy are entirely focused on Eddie? Like, they’re just making everything about a third person! Imagine if they did this for anybody else! and, oh my god Tommy’s gonna break up with Buck because Buck’s basically already dating Eddie or something, isn’t he? and, oh my god it’s gonna be glorious! and, oh my god I can’t wait!

And I’m also thinking, I was wrong, and you were right. And I’m so happy I could cry.

TL;DR: If you and I share sterek, or destiel, or god knows what other similarly-shaped trauma, 9-1-1 might heal ya.

Renarin is one of few characters in epic fantasy literature who's canonically neurodivergent or queer - it's rare enough to just see one of those things! He is also the best, just all around. He is so reckless and has such a strong moral compass: like he ran to help fight a giant crab monster with no weapons, no armor, and no training; he jumped into a 4vs1 duel to help his brother, with no armor, no training, and a sword that deals him psychic damage anytime he holds it.

He's autistic and gay; disability is a big part of his story; he's so much of an outcast that he was the first person to join his world's extra-marginalized order of sinister-but-not-evil magic users; and while he's quiet and self-contained, he's full to the brim with suppressed rage. Sidelined second son and quasi-cursed prophet. I fully believe he can take this tournament by storm.

Renarin is autistic, epileptic, and queer as the day is long. As a kid, he struggled to win his dad's approval due to his inability to fight as well as his abled brother -- but these days his dad's wised up and realized that Renarin actually kicks ass. When Renarin gets magic powers, he isn't "cured"; he's still epileptic, he's still autistic, and he still has a crush on the strapping young alien lad in his squad. Not only does he break down class barriers by hanging out with ex-slave humans (he's the prince of a major kingdom), he breaks racial barriers by dating an alien who's entire race was, until recently, enslaved by humans. Overall, he's a complete badass who is getting more confident, more appreciated, and more gay with every book in the series.

i don’t remember what it is (or if that’s even said) but his disability gives her trouble walking some days and on others makes it so they can’t get out of bed. bisexual &nonbinary omnigender!

listen. i love him. oh my god i love aer. their disability and queerness are both central to the narrative. due to it being disabled, she is not taken seriously where he comes from. xe has given up on insisting on its gender being respected - every time thon tries, its taken as a sign he is having a bad day symptoms wise, which in turn is taken as though she has never grown up past being eight years old. through the game proper, it hides hir disability most of the time. to ask for help is to let someone know. and throughout their entire life, everyone who knew has treated him as stupid - perhaps not always, but everyone has. this is why she doesnt really want to get out of the anomaly; this is the first time fae has had friends who dont know, and therefore dont have "a reason" to infantilize it. star hides everything behind a chipper demeanour. well, that demeanour isnt entirely a lie; she is really silly and pleasant - one of my favourite things he says in the entire game is "isnt blue super bad for computers? like blue balls of death or something?". upon being asked "where do you come from that computers have balls?", they respond "well, how do they reproduce if they dont?" in conclusion. Loam my beloved.

I still can’t believe bisexual buck is canon but I am very happy with the way they handled the storyline. Seeing Buck wanting to spend time with Tommy but getting cockblocked by Eddie, made me go through a rollercoaster of emotions. The relatable feeling of being excluded, the confusion in not understanding it was jealousy what Buck was feeling all along because being attracted to men was not a thing he considered before, and the literal sigh of relief after kissing Tommy.

The hamster wheel is truly gone and now is time to fly bisexually through the sky. I’m so grateful for Oliver, for always putting so much care into Buck, trying to truly understand him, always open to possibilities, even after having bad experiences in fan spaces. A case for Hunter’s bisexuality and why it isn’t just a headcanon anymore

I can’t believe I have to do this post but some people still think him being bi is more of a suggestion and not implied canon that has to be respected, so I guess I gotta make a case as the local bisexual and a Hunter fan.

So there’s two main reasons.

1. As we know Luz made a presentation about her coming out in which Gus and Amity participated so therefore we can conclude that those two are aware what being bi means. As for Willow? She put lesbian and bi flag stickers in her scrapbook. And if they know so does Hunter since he wont be excluded from Luz explaining to them. So Hunter is very aware what being bi means and he put it a rainbow patch in these colors on his sweater. 

2. Environmental storytelling.

Now that the in-universe reasons are out of the way, let’s talk about the crew putting that patch there. It is not the first time the crew has used a detail such as this to confirm a sexuality since something similar happened with Eda, with the bi rainbow on her box. So if the crew didnt want to allude to it, then they would have not put a rainbow patch there or would have used different colors.  But they used this very specific color scheme after they implied that hunter is very well aware what it means. Otherwise why would the misderect us like this, about a character whose sexuality was not confirmed until now? Things like this are very deliberate and not just “random”.

*additionally, it’s not the owl house but sasha from amphibia was confirmed in a similar way, with a bi sticker on her car’s rear view mirror and i don’t see anyone denying this as a solid confirmation

And now that the reasons are out of the way, I will address some arguments I’ve seen such as: 

“Hunter wanted to support Luz”

If he wanted to support Luz, he would have also supported Amity with a lesbian rainbow on that sweater. It’s why Camila doesn’t have a bi flag pin but the general rainbow flag pin since she is supporting all the kids, not just Luz. 

“The rainbow is random cause Hunter has all kinds of random patches there”

He indeed has random patches there but he also has patches that pertain to his interest and past (like the wolf and the golden triangle patch). So while some are random, others are very much not. And circling back to the environmental storytelling bit, the crew won’t play around lightly with flags and a character whose sexuality was not confirmed until now.

“It’s just a flag, it’s not a confirmation”

Amity was also never stated to be a lesbian in-show or Eda as a bisexual for that matter and yet we have subtle confirmations with both of them and no one will deny it. And going back to Sasha from Amphibia who was also confirmed with just a sticker. Still no one denies she is a bi. So why deny Hunter?

In conclusion, respect my boy’s bisexuality and cease the erasure cause I am starting to enter “stomping to death with my hooves” mode.

I will always be upset with how people state that Lunter is an invalid relationship. Allow me to give my responses to anti-Lunter statements. I’ve said these before but I’ll say them again since some people can’t understand them.

“Luz called him family, therefore they’re family.”

In Thanks To Them, Luz specifically said the line “You’re family now” to Hunter. Calling someone family doesn’t automatically mean that you view them as literal family. There are multiple different kinds of family: literal family, parents’ friends, found family, your own friends, etc.

People call their friends family.

It is also SO VERY COMMON for people that are Hispanic/Asian/etc. to call their close ones “family.” I should know, I’m Filipina. People seem to forget that Luz is Afro-Latina, meaning that it is common for her to call her close ones “family.”

More importantly, this line is practically the same to when Willow said “You’re one of us now” in For The Future. Being such a close friend to someone to where they call you family is the same as “being one of them.”

Also, tweets outside of the show are not canon, just the crew’s headcanons. Only things inside of the show are canon. When Zeno changed his twitter name to “Hunter Noceda,” that was a headcanon. Yes, he’s a part of the crew, but when things are canon, they’re in the source, not outside of it.

Camila has never legally adopted Hunter on screen. You can say that she could have legally done it off-screen but that’s a headcanon, not canon. Look at Camila’s house in Watching and Dreaming, there were lots of photos of Luz, Vee, and herself excluding Hunter. In the finale, it was also shown that Darius took in Hunter.

All of the Hexsquad members likely viewed Camila as a mother figure, not just Hunter. Amity’s mother was abusive, Gus and Willow had no mother, and Hunter had no healthy parental figures yet. Camila viewed all of them equally as her children, which is why she called herself a mother of six. Why would she view Hunter as her kid more than the others when she knew them all for the same amount of time?

If you’re going to say that he’s related to Luz from being Eda’s ancestor (Caleb), remember that he’s a clone of Caleb and not actually Caleb Wittebane himself.

“It’s erasing sapphic representation.”

How? Tell me: how is it erasing sapphic representation?

Luz will canonically always be in a relationship with Amity. Shipping her with a man is not going to erase her canon relationship from existence. Luz and Amity’s relationship is not going to magically disappear from the show.

Besides, Luz is bisexual, which means that she is attracted to women and men (2+ genders). If you believe that she should only be shipped with women, then you are erasing her bisexuality by only viewing her as lesbian when it comes to being in relationships.

Yes, sapphic representation is buried beneath heterosexual content but Luz and Hunter do not classify as a heterosexual relationship, they’re both bisexual, making the relationship a bisexual one.

*Bisexual wlm relationship are still a part of the LGBTQIA+ community. Bisexual wlm relationships should not be viewed as anything less than wlw and wlm relationships.*

“You would rather ship Luz with a man than a woman.”

Most people who ship Lunter are people who believe that the ship had much more potential for the story than Luz and Amity did. The whole purpose of Luz and Amity being a couple was for sapphic representation (which was lovely since they are pretty healthy if you don’t look too deep into it). Lunter could fit so much more into the story narrative-wise.

Luz and Amity = Sapphic representation and light-hearted for the story.

Luz and Hunter = Deep and narratively-great (Wittecouple “reincarnated”) for the story.

Which one you ship depends on why you watch the show. Do you watch Owl House for the representation or for the lore? People watch shows for different reasons.

“Luz has already shown interest in men, therefore she shouldn’t be shipped with one.”

What I’m getting from this is that you believe Luz shouldn’t be shipped with men even though she’s bisexual since it’s “erasing sapphic representation again” and there was “already enough bisexual wlm content.” This is stating that she should only date woman in another format while trying to not sound biphobic.

This is a biphobic statement. Once again, Luz is attracted to both men and women. I don’t see a problem with shipping her with men. Erasing sapphic representation? Reread the second section of this. She will always canonically be with Amity and Lunter is not a heterosexual relationship, it’s a bisexual relationship.

If someone said that a bisexual female character who was dating a man couldn’t be shipped with women since it would erase her attraction to men, how would you feel? Upset that the character isn’t allowed to express her sexuality? It’s the same situation only swapping the genders.

TLDR / Recap

Since both Luz and Hunter are bisexual, Lunter is a bisexual relationship, not a heterosexual relationship. Bisexual man x woman relationship are just as valid as sapphic ones in the LGBTQIA+ community.

Luz/Amity is liked for having cute representation and Luz/Hunter is liked for lore reasons. Luz dating a man is not lessening her attraction to women because she is bisexual. Luz and Amity will always be canon.

Luz and Hunter aren’t siblings because calling someone family does not automatically mean literal family. There’s different kinds of family. It’s also common for people that are Hispanic to call their closed ones “family” and not mean literal family. Camila viewed all of the Hexsquad as her children (including Amity), why would she prioritize one over the other?
